DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE Dear Friends, Greetings from Vidya & Child!

With immense joy and pride, would like to share that Vidya & Child completes 20 years in 2018.

This journey would not have been possible without the support of each and every member of the Vidya & Child family – children & parents, staff & vendors, volunteers & partners, donors & associates and all other well wishers.

As we celebrate our 20 years, we also resolve and commit ourselves for the next 20 and take cognizance of our responsibility towards our children, our parents, our staff, our community and the country at large. The need for charting new paths stays along with the need for consolidation of what exists today; the need for speed stays along with the need to pause and think before the next step.

The year 2017-18, saw for the first time, the entire staff of 140+ at Vidya & Child coming together to brainstorm, discuss and articulate a common vision for our children. The coming together of all of us, for a common future of Vidya & Child and willingness and commitment towards it was an emotional and a humbling experience.

Each of our 1600 children are miracles to be believed. They continue to teach us much more than what we can ever teach them. Their undying spirit, dazzling smiles and sheer grit and determination, despite the challenges they face, are life lessons for each one of us.

Therefore, as we embark upon the next phase of our journey and plan for the next 20 years, it is important to ensure that as an organisation, the essence of our being – our values, our ways of working and our belief in every child’s potential, remains as pillars that are further strengthened with practice on a daily basis and do not get diluted.

Today, three centres are registered as schools with the UP Board and one centre with the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). Our focus and commitment towards EACH CHILD, EACH PARENT and EACH EMPLOYEE continues to drive us to plan for a future keeping all stakeholders in mind. Internally, processes like the Child-wise Tracking and work through Vision Building exercises initiated last year, has continued and has been consolidated further to make it more internalised and effective.

Vidya & Child feels the need to engage more deeply with EACH of its children, parent and employee and also cradles within a growing need and responsibility to reach out to more children through different opportunities available.

MISSION,OBJECTIVE & BELIEFS Mission Vidya & Child works with the mission to help bridge the gap for those children who need education and have no access to the facilities for learning existing in our society.

It works towards providing a learning environment which can lead to a strong educational foundation as well as help a child in identifying the uniqueness within.

Objective To develop a creative learning environment for children and help them merge with the mainstream of the society.

Beliefs Purpose of education is to build a platform for a child to learn, grow and explore; become aware of himself and surroundings; to continue learning and identify a suitable career path and to enjoy the whole process and experience of learning.

Vidya & Child believes in working from within the community. All project centres are located in the community and help us to stay connected with the beneficiaries.

OUR JOURNEY From two children to over 1600 children, Vidya & Child has come a long way. It was established in the year 1998 with the aim of making a difference in the lives of children belonging to socio-economically marginalized sections of the society. Most of the children studying in Vidya & Child are first generation learners and have parents who are illiterate/semi-literate and work as domestic servants, industrial workers, rickshaw-pullers, vendors, plumbers, carpenters and so on.

“Exploring the uniqueness in every child” forms the foundation of every thought and action at Vidya & Child. We strongly believe that the purpose of education is to build a platform for a child to learn, grow and explore. The team at Vidya & Child ensures “holistic development” of each child. A creative learning environment encompassing academic, artistic, exploratory as well as sports opportunities are important aspects of the programme design. The organisation is moving forward with a goal to reach out to more underprivileged children without compromising on the quality of intervention provided.

Vidya & Child currently operates 5 schools (Delhi NCR & Bihar). The system and processes ensures that the team follows a child-centric approach.

Apart from financial, academic and mentoring support, there is Life Skills and Art & Performing Arts Programme and preventive health camps that reaches EACH child.

ACHIEVEMENTS & RECOGNITIONS

Registered with U.P Board

2016 Vidya & Child is now registered as a School with U.P State Board for three of its schools and under NIOS board for its fourth school in Noida

Academic Performance 2017-18 100% of our students cleared CBSE Class 10th and 12th Boards. 2 students out of a batch of 11 in Class 12 scored above 80%. All the students have been placed and are pursuing higher studies in the streams of their choice.

ARISE LAB SCHOOL PROJECT 2013 -16 Vidya & Child, in partnership with Tech Mahindra Foundation, was appointed as a Technical Partner with Government Schools in East Delhi.

Under the PPP model, Vidya & Child got the opportunity to replicate its work in 3 schools, reaching out to more than 1500 underprivileged children from communities of Dilshad Garden, Tahirpur, Nandnagri, Seemapuri etc.

Areas of engagement included Academic Enrichment, Bridge Programme, Language Development, Teacher Enablement, Life Skills, Creative Programme, Community Outreach, Trips & Sports Coordination.

ACHIEVEMENTS & RECOGNITIONS Realising Dreams Vidya & Child alumni list consists of students who have completed their studies and are working in reputed companies. There are many who are pursuing their dreams and have taken part time jobs to support their families. Many students are now member of Vidya & Child Team and are contributing to our efforts of making many more dreams come true.

These success stories are created because of the collaborative effort of students, their parents, along with the support of Vidya & Child. Our children have not only excelled in academics but have created their mark in the area of painting, dance, music and sports. STORIES OF CHANGE Devi Shankar Hotel Management from Indian Institute of Hotel Management, Lucknow.

Currently working with Thomas Cook

Devi began his journey with Vidya & Child way back in 1998, when he joined in Nursery. He completed his primary education from Vidya & Child School Programme. Post that, he was mainstreamed in Class VI in a formal school.

He did his class XII in science stream from Ahlcon International School. Opportunities to participate in diverse range of activities and constant counselling by teachers helped Devi evolve as a confident and more social child.

Hospitality industry was one of the areas where Devi‘s aptitude was assessed in career counselling conducted at Vidya & Child. Devi appeared in the national level entrance test for Hotel Management . His good ranking helped him in getting admission at Indian Institute of Hotel Management, Lucknow for a three-year graduate degree in Hotel Management and Catering Technology. He completed his internship with ITC Maurya, Delhi and secured a job with Thomas Cook through campus interviews. An excellent tabla player, Devi also gives tabla classes to children. He learnt Tabla in the Arts & Performing Arts programme of Vidya & Child.

Originally from Uttar Pradesh, his father, along with the children shifted to Noida for a better living. His father works at the golf course in Noida and his mother lives in the village and works on the fields to support family income. Devi has two brothers and a sister. All his siblings are also associated with Vidya & Child.

Today Devi is an inspiration for many children. His positivity and enthusiasm is a great motivational factor for his juniors and peers. A student, a teacher, a working professional and a guide, Devi has been fulfilling all his responsibilities with great ease and perfection and surely has many more milestones to achieve.

STORIES OF CHANGE RUKSHAR ANSARI Rukshar completed her schooling through NIOS Programme of Vidya & Child and is currently pursuing Hotel Management from Institute of Hotel Management, Shimla Rukhsar was an overage child when she joined Vidya & Child in Class I. A polite and intelligent child, Rukshar was blessed with the trait of making friends easily.

An all rounder in school she actively took part in all the activities. She was particularly fond of playing frisbee. After completing her class V from Vidya & Child, Rukshar joined NIOS programme.

Through her grit and determination, she completed her studies from NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling).

Post her 12th she appeared for entrance exams to pursue her interest in Hotel Management. She came closer to realising her dream when she got admission at Institute of Hotel Management,Shimla.

Rukshar's father is a cook while her mother works as a house help. She has one younger brother. Rukshar parents always had high hopes from Rukshar and wanted her to have a better life . As a child Rukshar was always sensitive towards the aspiration of her parents and this became her driving force.

Rukshar's journey continues to aspire many children at Vidya & Child. A story of realising a dream against all odds.

HIGHLIGHTS & EVENT SNAPSHOTS Sports Training & Participation Sports form an integral part of Vidya & Child. Children are encouraged to choose from various sports which include Karate, Football, Kho-Kho, Chess and Skating.

Over the years, our students have won over 150 medals at various sports events held at district, state and national level.

HIGHLIGHTS & EVENT SNAPSHOTS Sports A talented Karate player, Shweta is a student of class XI . She was introduced to Karate while she was studying in Class VII at Vidya & Child school.

Karate being her passion, she has won many accolades at the district and national, level. Despite having lost at the national level,she is enthusiastically practicing with great zeal to outshine her competitors in the next sporting event.

She is confident that one day, her dream to be a successful sportswoman will be realized.

Sports Events Cricket Championship 2017-18 An in-house cricket championship was held between four teams of Vidya & Child. This included included league matches, semi-finals and finals.

Each team included students, staff and faculties as its members. After School Support Programme team from Ambedkar Vihar School won the winner’s trophy for the second consecutive year.

Sports Day Children celebrated Sports Day held at Vidya & Child School at Sec 128, Noida with lot of enthusiasm and zeal. They took part in various sports activities held on that day. The Karate showcase by children mesmerized the audience.

Balloon race, sack race, frog race were also some of the attractions of the sports day.

HIGHLIGHTS & EVENT SNAPSHOTS Field Trips & Exposure Visits Career Exposure A career exposure trip to Lemon Tree Hotel was organised. Children got a first hand experience of the hospitality industry and its functioning during their visit to Lemon Tree Hotel.They were briefed about the four departments of the hotel, viz., Front Office, Kitchen, Housekeeping and Food & Beverages, skills required for these and the courses they could choose to be in the hospitality industry.

Movie Screening All children from class VI to VIII of all centres were taken for movie showcase ‘’Poorna’’ . The movie was about a tribal girl who overcomes all odds to become the youngest girl to climb Mt. Everest. Post screening of the movie a discussion was held where children were encouraged to share their views. The objective was to motivate children to never give up and have courage to overcome any challenge.

Night Walk Children from class IX of the After School Support Programe went for a night walk organized by an NGO called Jamghat. The objective was to make them aware about their surroundings and to better equip them to understand the socio-economic fabric of the environment. This night walk gave them an insight into the lives of street children. Team from Jamghat was there to guide the children as to how Jamghat works to help street children and raise awareness within society by means of theatre and interactive workshops.

Exhibition of Working Models 21 children of Vatika School took part in the Science exhibition held at Setu Foundation, Noida. Children displayed all working models and gave presentations on various concepts ranging from Water Level Indicator, Density, Submarine, Reflection, Simple Harmonic Motion, Atomizer, Stethoscope, Spaceship etc.

Children from Vidya & Child were the star performers.

In Category Class 3rd to 5th, Om Kumar won the first prize for his model, water level indicator (Water Alarm), In Category Class 6th to 8th, Neha won the second prize for her Reflection model while in Category 8th to 10th, Bhawana and Richa got second prize for their Density model.

HIGHLIGHTS & EVENT SNAPSHOTS Udaan Book Release Children from class 3 onwards wrote stories & poems that were published in the 2nd edition of 'Udaan'. It encourages children in their creative expression and helps them in their writing endeavors. The book was published in Hindi and English. Around 100 stories and poems were part of this edition.

World Environment Day Children carried out various activities in the community on the eve of World Environment Day. Children, along with teachers, conducted a mini 'Swach Bharat' campaign in the community. Seven Groups were formed and given separate locations to clean up the streets as well as to raise awareness amongst the residents of that area.

Classical Art Form Exam 12 children cleared their first year classical art form exam from Prayag Sangit Samiti Allahabad. Music, Tabla, Classical dance are part of Vidya & Child's Arts & Performing Arts programme.

SCHOOL PROGRAMME (SP) Class Nursery to Class V Objective To provide value based integrated education to first generation learners from low income families for holistic development.

The School Programme at Vidya & Child provides the much-needed platform to a first-generation learner to quality and holistic education. It is an opportunity through which a child can develop a strong academic foundation, is exposed to a range of creative activities to develop and explore inherent talents which otherwise remain dormant. We also strive towards enabling a child to recognize his strengths and weaknesses, understand the criticality of a robust value framework which is important for any individual to remain grounded and lead a meaningful life.

AFTER SCHOOL SUPPORT PROGRAMME (ASSP) Class VI to X Objective To provide academic, financial & mentoring support to children who have been enrolled into mainstream schools

190 students are part of After School Support Programme Vidya & Child facilitates admission of children into mainstream schools after the School Programme and at this stage, all mainstreamed students become part of the After School Support Programme.

Under the After School Support Programme, children attend the academic classes for re-enforcement of concepts learnt at school. Along with academics, children are also provided opportunities for creative exploration through the Arts & Performing Arts Programme and engage through Life Skills Programme so as to make responsible choices. A strong parent programme ensures that the child gets the support towards completion of school education and further aims for higher education. Interactions with the mainstream schools are done to track the academic and behavioural performance of each child. Children are also exposed to different careers and provided mentoring support for career readiness.

Key Features Mainstreaming - Selection of schools after considering quality of education and social commitment towards the cause of the less privileged.

Support at Vidya & Child centres - After school hours, every child spends 4 hours at our centre for reinforcement of academic concepts, extracurricular activities as well as mentoring support.

Syllabus Tracking & School Interactions - Detailed tracking of syllabus being taught at mainstream school to ensure synchronisation of teaching. Also, Vidya & Child members attend all school PTM’s at the mainstream school to take a detailed feedback on each child with respect to academics and behaviour etc.

FOUNDATION PROGRAMME (FP) Class XI, XII and beyond Objective To provide financial, tutoring and mentoring support to students to complete their Secondary School Education, to ensure career readiness and to support them during their higher education, financially as well as through regular mentoring.

Over 125 students are part of Foundation Programme

The Foundation Programme supports children who have finished Class X and are ready to take decisions related to their careers. Our focus at Vidya & Child, specifically Foundation Programme is that each child remains in the education process and pursues higher studies after Class X and XII.

Vidya & Child supports each child till the time each one of them take up a meaningful career of his / her own choice. This support includes guidance, academic support, career counselling, mentoring and financial support

NIOS SUPPORT PROGRAMME Class VI to XII Objective To ensure that children complete their education through NIOS, recognise their inner potential and pursue a vocation or skill of their choice.

70 students are part of NIOS Program

The NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) Support Programme helps children who cannot be mainstreamed to regular schools due to different reasons continue their education and ensures that these children do not drop out of the education process.

Children are supported through intensive dialogue and a strong parent connect so that they complete their schooling and also pursue vocational and professional courses basis their skills and aptitude keeping a long term career in mind.

Key Features Academic Support & Tracking – Registration in NIOS and child-centric selection of subjects. Regular classes are held for all subjects on a daily basis through a structured timetable that includes Computer Lab classes.

Intensive one-on-one interaction with each child for counseling & career mapping.

Sustained parent involvement through Home Visits, PTM’s and One-on-One interactions.

Life Skills Training — Various issues that are age - appropriate and cater to the challenges and conflicts faced by children in their daily life are addressed through discussions, film reviews and activity based workshops.

Every child learns a creative activity from a basket of Art, Classical Music, Pottery, Puppetry, Theatre, Folk Art ( Madhubani, Patua, Warli ), Fine Art and Classical Dance ( Kathak & Kuchipudi).

An Artist in Making Lalit’s journey at Vidya & Child is as colourful as the colours he uses on his canvas. A shy child, he joined Vidya & Child in Class 1. He had shown inclination towards the Arts from the beginning. Over the years, he was often found adding colours to someone’s painting in Vidya & Child’s Sector 37 Centre or volunteering for Patua Art sessions. He was also a good sports person and played Cricket, Volleyball and Frisbee at Vidya & Child. Lalit was encouraged by his teachers to continue his passion for painting. Currently in his 3rd year, he is pursuing a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts (Applied Arts) from Delhi College of Art, New Delhi.

LIFE SKILLS PROGRAMME Nursery to Class XII Objective To guide children in managing their strengths and weaknesses and to enable them to face the real world challenges with confidence

Key Features Structured curriculum for Primary Classes through books and activities For Class VI and above, curriculum based life skills supplemented with workshops Mental and physical activities as well as exposure to real life case studies through stories, movie based workshops,guest lectures and associations with other organisations Teacher trainings, observations of sessions and reviews Cyber safety sessions were conducted to combat the challenges due to social media interactions like cyber bullying, stalking etc.

External experts discussed topics like drug addiction in teenagers. ‘How to say no’ and understanding the dangers of ‘Peer Pressure’ Various areas addressed through life skills are: Caring and Sharing, Nutrition, Body Image, Managing Anger, Responsibility, Goal Setting and Developing Focus, Protecting Public Property, Being Safe - How to say ‘No’, respecting the feelings of others and many more.

Positive change Vinita is a third year student at IHM, Panipat.

Initially, Vinita found it challenging to mingle with her classmates and teachers. Not sure of herself, she was not able to concentrate on her studies or any other activities. Constant counselling, Life Skill classes, mentoring by the teachers and special attention in her academics along with her perseverance showed remarkable results. She scored well in her Hotel Management entrance exam and secured admission at IHM, Panipat. Today, she is a changed personality and has gone ahead and won the debate competition in her college. She is doing well in her studies and is confident that she will secure a good placement.

IMPACTING LIVES Perspective towards education : When Vidya & Child was set up, not many parents were keen to enroll their children as they did not fully understand the importance of education.

Over the years, the awareness campaigns and counseling done by Vidya & Child has helped to change the perception of the community.

Numerous Success stories of Vidya & Child alumni students also serve as an inspiration for the other children & parents in the community

Nature of Employment :

Broader Outlook :

Over the years, there has been a shift in the nature of employment. Earlier, the community members were working as plumbers, shopkeepers, vendors, rickshaw pullers, domestic help, labourers etc.

Today, their next generation is breaking barriers and working across 20 diverse careers ranging from Engineering to Architecture.

Change in the Saving Pattern of the community as the realization of planning for the future has gained importance.

Through regular exposure visits and participation in external events, the beneficiaries have gained more knowledge, awareness and a broader outlook.

Gender Equality Parents are eager to send their daughters to school.They are now even willing to support higher education for them. Today, some girls are also staying in hostels out of town.

Through PTMs and home visits, parents are counseled to treat their sons & daughters at par with respect to delegating work, giving time to study , career planning etc.

Languages & Communication Majority of the inhabitants being migratory population, there was an increased dependence on the use of regional languages in the past years.

Today, their language skills have broadened to include English & Hindi due to English medium teaching & Reinforcement through Spoken English classes and Hindi Language Development activities.

Boost in personality of students due to knowledge & better expression in English, is making them more confident at their workplace also.

Health & Hygiene Increased awareness in the community about the importance of health and hygiene due to the awareness campaigns and regular health camps organised by Vidya & Child to cover the immunisation requirements and basic health needs of its students.

CAPACITY BUILDING A structured Capacity Building Process is followed, which includes initiatives across the different levels of the organisation - Teachers, Programme Heads as well as Support Staff.

Over 40 trainings are held each year at different levels and areas.

Apart from academic training, team at Vidya & Child went through various training related to Organisational Values, Life Skill , System and Processes to name a few. Training sessions were also taken by external organisations like Child Against Child Abuse, Genpact, Kiran Nadar Museum of Art and Fortis to name a few.
