VidyaGyan’s Moolgyan Initiative Tackles the Agriculture-Nutrition Disconnect
Agriculture plays an important role in providing nutritious foods and sustainable livelihoods. Agriculture also employs more than half of India's workforce, yet pervasive undernutrition endures, especially among the young This is why "nutrition literacy" is of utmost importance, as it makes people aware of essential information and drives them to take responsibility for their eating habits Young children do not find wellness aspirational and are disconnected from health and nutrition, mostly because they are unable to connect this to success They do not think about health and well-being and identify success with stability, power, and money
To help address this, the students of VidyaGyan recently worked on the "Moolgyan" project, which aimed at tackling the "agriculture-nutrition disconnect "
The Shiv Nadar Foundation's initiative, VidyaGyan was created with the express purpose of identifying and nurturing promising adolescents from economically disadvantaged rural areas By incorporating a futuristic education system, VidyaGyan addresses varied issues related to a shortage of trained teachers, inadequate teaching materials, and limited access to technology
To lay the groundwork for the Moolgyan initiative, the students visited Jaivik Farms for a unique farm-based educational experience, where the farm was more of a classroom for them Through farm lab tours, they learned about the soil, plants, and products, while the kitchen lab allowed for hands-on cooking and eating Curriculum-based workshops were also available for both teachers and students, providing an engaging and interactive learning opportunity
The Moolgyan initiative, launched by the students of VidyaGyan, has quite a lot of social impact It focuses on the subject of nutrition and promotes agripreneurship among youth The students were driven to build knowledge on the subject of nutrition and innovation networks in India, with youth at the center of activity Such initiatives focus on transformation in education and encourage learning beyond cerebral education.
VidyaGyan was founded in 2009 and has since established two campuses in Uttar Pradesh It is widely regarded as one of the most prosperous examples of rural leadership development in the country Every year, VidyaGyan Schools enroll 200 students in Grade VI who receive free high-quality education and accommodation until they complete Grade XII. Over 1700 alumni have graduated from VidyaGyan Schools and many of them have pursued their studies at prestigious colleges worldwide.
