Her loyalty, grace, and heart have inspired generations of caregivers. To every team member behind the scenes at Job Haines Home, thank you for being the champions of care. Galaxies,

From his backyard in West Orange, one amateur astronomer is exploring the universe one deepsky object at a time. What began as a childhood fascination—nurtured by a shared interest with his dad—has become a full-blown passion for capturing the wonders of space through telescopes and astrophotography.

ooking for a fun, screen-free way to spark your child’s imagination, build confidence, and encourage real social interaction? West Orange resident Dylan Schatell, a Rutgers University student and longtime Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast, is turning his passion into a unique and enriching experience for local kids.

Through interactive sessions designed for parties, structured playdates, and summer activities, Dylan leads boys and girls into magical worlds where they become heroes, solve creative challenges, and work as a team. Along the way, kids sharpen their reading, critical thinking, and communication skills, all under Dylan’s friendly, age-appropriate guidance. Sessions are structured, safe, and customized for different group sizes, ages, and experience levels. No experience is needed—just a willingness to imagine, explore, and have fun.

This game is perfect for birthday parties, scout troops, clubs, camps, after-school groups, library programs, or just a few friends. Don’t have a group? Dylan will help match your child with others to start a campaign. With tailored quests and hands-on storytelling, Dylan offers a one-of-a-kind activity that’s smart, social, and full of adventure. Dylan can be reached at 862-216-8616.

Comets, and Cosmic Curiosity

Specializing in galaxies, nebulas, and rare celestial events, Daniel Kirby is known for 12P/Pons-Brooks and the elusive Green Comet. He shares his images and insights through Instagram and frequent talks at observatories and museums.

When he’s not leading software teams by day, Daniel spends his nights building telescope bases or helping fellow stargazers set up their gear. What sets him apart is more than technical skill— it’s his infectious curiosity. “Seeing Mars vanish behind the Moon—it was surreal,” he says. “Moments like that remind me why I keep looking up.”

For Daniel, the universe isn’t just something to observe—it’s something to marvel at. Wild, beautiful, and always in motion, it’s a reminder that there’s always more to discover.

Pack Attack Parties Bring Sports Card Fun to the

Looking for a fresh, interactive party idea—especially one boys will love (and girls too)? Pack Attack Parties offer a new twist on immersive entertainment, tapping into the resurging popularity of sports and trading card collecting. Created by Caldwell resident Robert Cowper, these parties are fun, educational, and fully customizable for

AParty Scene

guests of all ages—and yes, adults love cracking packs too!

Here’s how it works: party hosts choose a theme—baseball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer, Pokémon, Magic, Lorcana, or a mix—and Cowper brings packs of cards for guests to open. The cards fuel friendly games and challenges that earn prize tickets, which can be redeemed for exciting extras like rookie cards, rare parallels, more cards, and more.

Throughout the party, guests also learn the basics of collecting—like how to look up card values or spot a base card versus a parallel. Each guest receives essentials like a deck box, penny sleeves, and top loaders to protect their favorite cards. No party favors needed—this is the gift that keeps giving. For information, visit: packattackparties.com.

Kindergarteners Raise Funds with Lemonade and Love From Local Fields to AC Milan: Ultrafooty

creative group of kindergarteners at Lincoln Elementary in Caldwell and their class moms found a sweet way to show appreciation for their teachers— Mrs. Goldman and Mrs. Weller—by designing custom t-shirts and raising money through a neighborhood lemonade stand. Each student contributed a hand-drawn heart, later printed onto t-shirts gifted to the class. To offset costs and avoid burdening families, a few students (with help from older siblings) sold lemonade and cookies, ultimately raising $170—enough to reduce the shirt cost to just $4 per student.

The shirts were presented to the teachers at the endof-year class party, with students proudly wearing their own t-shirts too.

Organized by class moms and supported by the community, the fundraiser was a heartfelt lesson in giving back. “We did it because we love our teachers,” said five-year-old Eleanor Greenstein, one of the young fundraisers.

Client Signs Big

At just 16 years old, Astin Mbaye is taking a major step on the international soccer stage, signing with AC Milan’s professional reserve team, Milan Futuro, after years of development with Ultrafooty—a professional soccer training program based in Livingston and Fairfield. A standout center back for the New York Red Bulls U16 Academy, Astin was scouted by several European clubs during his international showings with the U.S. Youth National Team, ultimately choosing Milan for its elite pathway to professional play.

Known for his quiet confidence, humility, and game intelligence beyond his years, Astin holds Senegalese and German citizenship through his African father and European mother, making him eligible to join top European programs. He began training with Ultrafooty three years ago, rapidly advancing by working one-onone and with older collegiate players.

“He’s a perfect example of how talent, humility, and being coachable create opportunity,” says Dylan Evande, coowner of Ultrafooty. “We’re proud to be part of his journey.”

Changing the System, Centering Youth

This Advocate is Designing a New Future Alongside New Jersey’s Youth

EEmilie Stewart, who grew up in North Caldwell, is more than a policy advocate—she’s a catalyst for change, driven by a belief that every young person deserves a future shaped by opportunity, not circumstance. As Manager of Policy Advocacy for the Newark Opportunity Youth Network (NOYN), Emilie has turned conviction into action, leading statewide efforts that amplify youth voices and reshape public policy.

Her journey wasn’t linear—and that’s what makes it powerful. Emilie entered college pre-med, but an unexpected volunteer experience at a youth detention center changed everything. She began working with incarcerated teens and quickly saw how deeply systems like education, justice, and foster care failed to support them. “I realized that many young people are navigating systems that weren’t built for their success,” she says.

Determined to confront these injustices, Emilie shifted course. After earning her degree in human development and policy analysis at Cornell, she joined Teach for America, teaching high school English in Baltimore. There, she witnessed students grappling with mental health challenges, a lack of access to resources, and systemic bias—yet still showing up, still hoping. “My classroom became my first site of advocacy,” she says. “But I knew I needed to do more.”

She returned to school to earn a master’s in macro social work and went on to serve as a policy advisor to the governor

of Rhode Island, working to protect the rights of youth in foster care. But her heart remained with New Jersey. When an opportunity arose to join NOYN, she seized it—bringing with her a bold vision: policy driven by the people it affects most.

Emilie now trains young people ages 16 to 21 in advocacy skills—from visioning sessions and power mapping to legislative testimony and coalition-building. She doesn’t just speak for youth—she helps them speak for themselves. In 2024, her work helped pass two landmark bills in New Jersey: the Youth Disconnection

Prevention Act and the New Jersey YouthBuild Act, both informed directly by youth testimony and grassroots organizing.

Even now, her work doesn’t stop at policy wins. “Passing a bill is just the beginning,” Emilie says. “We fight just as hard to make sure it’s implemented the right way.”

In a field where process can eclipse people, Emilie Stewart brings humanity back into focus. She’s not just advocating for youth—she’s walking beside them, showing what’s possible when empathy, persistence, and purpose collide.

Emilie Stewart talks about advocacy to students in the Social Justice Concentration at Mount St. Dominic Academy. She is a also 2010 graduate of MSDA.

WWhen Meera Mehta sees a need in her community, she doesn’t wait for someone else to fix it —she gets to work. Since her freshman year, that work has meant boosting literacy rates by collecting over 50,000 books for underserved children and families across New Jersey, with a goal of reaching 100,000 by the end of the year.

“I started with a single book drive in 9th grade, but then realized how many kids were struggling with reading and writing post-pandemic,” she said. “The good news is that we can begin turning this around with simple solutions like increasing access to books and making writing more fun.”

Through her initiative, Novel Futures, the rising Glen Ridge High School senior organizes book drives at schools—like Forest Avenue and Watchung Co-op—and collects donations from local families, then distributes the books to community partners like Montclair Child Development Center, the Junior League of Newark, and BookSmiles. While the focus is on children’s books, adult titles are also accepted and passed along to partner organizations.

Wanting to do more than just distribute books, Meera created Story Labs—free writing workshops for children ages 6–12. Inspired by memoir courses she took at the

Teen Gives Back by Building “Novel Futures” for Young Readers

Iowa Young Writers’ Studio and the University of Pennsylvania’s Kelly Writers House, Meera believes that everyone has a story worth sharing. She held her first Story Lab at the Glen Ridge Makers Day and will run more at the Glen Ridge Public Library.

Each Story Lab session includes creative prompts and one-on-one guidance. Workshops are offered regularly throughout the summer with flexible drop-in attendance.

To expand accessibility, Meera is also developing an on-demand online series so children can participate anytime, from anywhere.

She recently launched a Bookfinder Tool on her website, novelfutures. org, helping families discover inclusive stories that reflect a wide range of lived experiences—filtered by age, topic, and audience.

“I’ve always loved reading,” Meera said. “But I saw how uneven access to books was in our area. I wanted to close that gap—and make sure every child feels seen in the stories they read.”

With plans to study writing and anthropology in college, Meera is already helping reshape how young readers access and connect with books.

Three Stories, One Stage: Clark Clyburn Premieres Powerful New Plays

Experience an unforgettable afternoon of raw emotion, real-life stories, and redemptive journeys as playwright and director Clark Clyburn debuts three original stage plays at Luna Stage in West Orange.

“These actors are phenomenal,” Clyburn says. “I have the best cast in the world. They bring every character to life with heart and conviction.”

“Trouble in Johnny’s House” – A single father trying to move forward with his life and new relationship finds himself caught between past and present, love and responsibility.

Poolside Perfection

Add-Ons That Make a

Splash

ATurn your pool into a resort-style retreat with these must-have enhancements

A POOL ISN’T JUST A PLACE TO COOL OFF—IT CAN BE THE CENTERPIECE OF A LUXURIOUS OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE. WITH THOUGHTFUL ADD-ONS, YOU CAN ENHANCE COMFORT, AESTHETICS, AND FUNCTIONALITY. HERE ARE FIVE SMART UPGRADES THAT ELEVATE ANY BACKYARD POOL FROM BASIC TO BEAUTIFUL.

In-Pool Seating: Relax Without Leaving the Water Forget flimsy floaties. Built-in features like tanning ledges, underwater benches, and bar stools let you unwind in comfort. A tanning ledge, or Baja shelf, is a shallow platform perfect for lounging with just a few inches of water. Add an umbrella sleeve and you have a shaded spa-like spot. Swim-up bars with submerged stools are also trending, offering a fun and social space without ever leaving the water.

Stylish Surrounds: Safer, Smarter Pool Decking What goes around your pool matters just as much as what’s in it. Upgrading to slip-resistant pavers, natural stone, or textured concrete not only improves safety but enhances the entire look of the backyard. These materials stay cooler underfoot and add visual interest with unique colors and patterns. Consider a border in a contrasting tone to define the pool area and add a custom feel.

Privacy with Purpose: Create a Serene Escape Whether you’re enjoying a morning swim or a late-night dip, privacy makes a big difference. Tall hedges, bamboo screens, or decorative privacy walls help create a secluded atmosphere while reducing noise and wind. You can also install vertical garden panels for a green wall effect that’s both functional and beautiful. For added ambiance, incorporate climbing vines or soft lighting into the structure.

Lighting That Glows: Swim After Sunset Well-placed lighting turns your pool into a stunning nighttime feature. LED pool lights in color-changing modes add fun and drama, while landscape uplighting around trees and water features enhances the overall mood. String lights or lantern-style fixtures along the pool’s edge or nearby patio create a cozy, festive vibe. For eco-conscious homeowners, solar-powered options are both efficient and easy to install.

Smart Tech: The Modern Pool Experience Today’s pool systems can be fully automated for ease and convenience. With smart pool controllers, you can manage temperature, pumps, lighting, and filtration all from your smartphone. Set schedules, activate features remotely, or monitor chemical levels from anywhere. Some systems even work with voice assistants like Alexa or Google Home, letting you control your pool hands-free.

Practical Ways to Freshen Up Your Indoor Spaces

Whether you’re preparing for a new season, entertaining guests, or simply craving a change, refreshing your indoor space doesn’t have to require a major renovation. With a few strategic updates, you can create a more vibrant, inviting environment that enhances your mood and comfort. Breathe new life into your home with a few simple ideas.

Introduce Indoor Plants—Indoor plants not only add visual appeal but also help purify the air. Choose low-maintenance varieties, such as snake plants, pothos, or peace lilies. Even one or two plants can soften hard lines and introduce organic texture.

Maximize Natural Light—Clean your windows and consider replacing heavy curtains with lighter fabrics. Mirrors placed opposite windows can amplify light,

making smaller spaces feel larger and more open.

Rearrange Your Furniture—Changing your room’s layout can create a better flow and function. Try “floating” furniture off the walls or repositioning chairs for more conversational arrangements. This simple refresh can dramatically alter the way a space feels.

Declutter and Simplify—Clearing clutter is one of the fastest ways to freshen up a room. Remove unnecessary items from shelves and surfaces, and store seasonal décor and unused accessories away. A clean, simplified space often feels more spacious and serene.

Add New Textiles—Switch out throw pillows, blankets, or area rugs for new colors or textures. Natural fibers like

cotton or linen work well in warmer months, while velvet or wool adds coziness in cooler seasons.

Update Wall Art and Décor—Rotate artwork or photography, add floating shelves, or install a new wall clock or mirror. Wall decals or removable wallpaper offer bold, non-permanent updates.

Paint an Accent Walls—Painting just one accent wall can add personality and redefine the room’s feel. Popular indoor refresh tones include soft greens, warm beiges, and calming blues.

Incorporate Mood Lighting—Layered lighting, using a mix of ambient, task, and accent lights, creates a warm and flexible environment. Consider dimmable bulbs, string lights, or LED strips to change a room’s atmosphere throughout the day.

A Garden with Staying Power Mulroe Landscaping on the Van Vleck Tour

OOne of the most talked about stops on this year’s 25th annual Van Vleck House & Gardens “Roses to Rock Gardens” tour was a 1.5-acre property perched high on Upper Mountain Avenue in Montclair. Once owned by NFL Hall of Famer and television personality Michael Strahan, the estate features panoramic views of the New York City skyline – a first in the tour’s history.

For more than 20 years, Joseph Mulroe of Mulroe Landscaping has been the silent architect and facilitator behind the home’s outdoor design team. Based in Verona and focused almost exclusively in Montclair, Mulroe is known for infrastructure-first work – specializing in patios, paths, and drainage systems that stand the test of time.

Originally brought in after major renovations at the property in the early 2000s, Mulroe handled the complex challenge of building into the steep ridgeline, installing hardscaping and

pathways to create usable, beautiful spaces. “Montclair’s terrain doesn’t forgive shortcuts,” Mulroe said. “Drainage is what lets everything else survive.”

The innovative landscape plan was initially designed by renowned art historian and Landscape Architect, Barbara Paca, OBE, Ph.D. and her partner LEED-certified architect, Philip Logan—and then Mulroe was thoughtfully brought onto the team to become the lead collaborator and executor of their joint vision. Mulroe most always remains the key player to a landscape project’s successful longevity over not just months or years, but oftentimes over decades. In this light, he has professionally and meticulously maintained this uniquely beautiful property for two decades since the project’s inception.

The landscape was designed with scale and vision – from the New Dawn rose-covered, 50-foot cedar pergola, adjoining slate roofed pavilion (all with bluestone patios beneath), both commanding expansive NYC skyline views… to the modern, four-car, lower-level garage attached to the historic, “Tudor Manor”-styled home, evoking a mix of English Cotswold countryside vibes and contemporary flair.

Notably this year, ahead of the garden tour, the current homeowner refreshed the diverse plantings with Mulroe’s skilled implementation, to add even more excitement to the expansive property for those lucky enough to have visited on this year’s “RTRG” 25th anniversary celebration. This marks at least the sixth “RTRG” tour property Mulroe has worked on over the years—a testament to both his deep roots in the community and the timeless quality of his landscape construction projects.

An Elite Experience From Start to Finish

Transform the look of your home with a fresh coat of paint

WWHEN TONY DIGREZIA FOUNDED ELITE PAINTING & POWERWASHING IN 1997, IT WAS A ONE-MAN OPERATION. “I STARTED THIS BUSINESS WITH $300 AND BOUGHT SOME BUSINESS CARDS, ENVELOPES, AND SOME LETTERHEAD” HE SAYS.

Fast forward 29 years, Elite has a project manager, color consultant, and a team of skilled tradespeople offering a variety of services, including carpentry, wood repair, gutter installation and much more.

“Many of these services go hand in hand with painting, so we try to be a onestop shop. It just makes it easier for the customer.”

One of the things Tony enjoys about his long career is the ability to transform someone’s house or business, whether inside or out, quickly. “After we do the work, there’s a noticeable difference, and that’s super gratifying.”

Elite uses the finest paint from Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams, and the painters are all trained by Tony. “We have the same painters, some for almost 20 years,” he says. “We carefully hire and know who’s going to be in your house.”

We’re not bouncing around from one project to another. We start one job and finish that one before we start another.

An Elite Experience From Start to Finish

(continued from the previous page)

Every customer’s home is treated with respect. “We never take for granted that someone saved up enough money to have their home painted. We always try to give our clients more than their money’s worth.”

Elite takes on one job at a time to minimize disruption. “We’re not bouncing around from one project to another” says Tony. “We start one job and finish that one before we start another.” Danny, the project manager, maintains contact with customers throughout the entire process.

We have the same painters, some for almost 20 years. We carefully hire and know who’s going to be in your house.

We never take for granted that someone saved up enough money to have their home painted. We always try to give our clients more than their money’s worth.

When it comes to painting, it’s not all about walls and ceilings. Many people today are choosing to have their kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities painted too. “It’s a huge cost savings over having them replaced, and when we’re done, it will look like they came straight from the factory.”

The hardest part for most people is choosing a color. “This is why we have a professional color consultant, and it’s one of the things that separates us from other companies. Rebecca will come out and help customers pick out colors, and they love it. She always gets great reviews.”

Speaking of reviews, Elite has over 200 five-star reviews on Google and Yelp. They’re also the Gold Winners in Best of Essex as the Best Painter in Essex County.

Another factor that sets the business apart is its effective communication. “We answer the phone,” he says. “We book appointments, and we show up on time. We then get you an estimate within 24 hours.” That estimate includes everything from the paint and supplies to the color coordinator, so there are no surprises at the end.

Living in Roseland with his wife of 25 years and two children, Tony loves being an essential part of his community and the surrounding area. He enjoys working hard, not just in business, but in his personal life. “I’m very big on physical fitness and I enjoy cross fit and living a healthy lifestyle, a fun fact about me is I have a run streak where I’ve run every single day outside for almost six years.”

To make your home or business look its best, contact Tony for a free estimate. Whether there are a few rooms in a house, a commercial office, or a condo complex, he and his experienced crew can handle it all.

Built-In Beauty

Smart Features That Elevate Your Patio or Deck

LLooking to take your outdoor living space to the next level? Built-in features are one of the most impactful upgrades you can make to a patio or deck. Not only do they enhance function and flow, but they also create a polished, custom look that adds value and curb appeal.

Built-in seating is a popular choice, offering extra spots for guests without the need for bulky furniture. Wraparound benches or L-shaped corner seats maximize space and can double as storage if designed with lift-up lids.

Planter boxes built into the deck or along patio borders add natural beauty and can soften hardscape edges. Choose seasonal blooms or even edible herbs for a decorative, functional twist.

For the entertainer, outdoor kitchens or grill stations built into stone or wood frames bring convenience and style. Include prep counters, sinks, and storage to make outdoor cooking seamless.

Fire pits or fireplaces set into patios offer year-round enjoyment and become natural gathering points on cool evenings. Other custom options include privacy walls, shade structures,

and LED lighting built into steps or rails—all enhancing safety and ambiance.

When planning built-in features, think long-term: use weatherresistant materials, ensure proper drainage, and consult a pro if needed. A well-designed built-in transforms your patio or deck into a truly personalized retreat.

Transform Your Backyard into a Party Venue for the Entire Family

AAre you hosting a party and looking for some exciting ideas? With a bit of planning, you can transform your ordinary backyard into a fun-filled venue. Here are three unique themes to consider.

A Water Park Who says you need a pool to cool off on hot days? Create your own backyard water park with attractions like a Slip ‘n’ Slide, sprinklers, inflatable water play pools, and water balloon games. Serve guests classic treats such as popsicles, funnel cakes, hot dogs, and other favorites typical of a water park. Make sure to have plenty of beach towels available and designate an area for those guests who prefer to stay dry.

A Movie Theater Host a film night under the stars by moving your home theater outside. Set up “stadium seating” by laying out blankets in the front, placing reclining chairs behind them, and adding regular lawn chairs at the back. Decorate your backyard according to the theme of the movie you’re screening and serve fresh popcorn. For the best viewing experience, consider using a high-quality projector that combines a laser and LED light source for optimal visuals.

Summer Camp Relive the summer camp experience with some friendly competitions. Assign your guests to teams and keep track of their scores. A prominent scoreboard displaying the current stats, accompanied by motivating music, will keep everyone engaged. Include classic games like tug-of-war and three-legged races, but don’t forget to incorporate some brain games as well, such as trivia. Conclude the day with an awards ceremony to celebrate the winners.

Evelate your backyard party by choosing a theme and going all out to create an unforgettable fiesta for your guests!

LOCAL BUSINESSES SUPPORTING LOCAL CAUSES

Now more than ever, it is important that we continue to to support our local businesses. The 16th Annual Best of Essex Contest highlights and celebrates these independent local businesses that support their local communities, local sports teams, and the arts.

You can make a difference! By voting for your favorite locally-owned independent businesses, you’re not just supporting them, but also helping one of three local causes. These causes, with their profound impact on the

community—from providing nutritious food to those in need, rescuing and rehoming animals, to advocating for foster children—are an Inspiration for us all to come together and make a positive change.

CASA OF ESSEX

CASA Essex, operating for nearly four decades, advocates for foster children by pairing dedicated volunteers with them. Led by Executive Director Marla Higginbotham, CASA ensures children in foster care receive personalized support and stability. Volunteers engage monthly with children and collaborate with educators, healthcare providers, and guardians to address all aspects of their well-being. Training and judicial appointment are required for volunteers, who play a crucial role in advocating for children’s best interests inside and outside the courtroom. CASA Essex serves 274 of the county’s 450 at-risk children and continually seeks volunteers and donations to sustain their mission.

Donations are also vital, helping support CASA’s mission and the children they serve. For more information, visit: casaessex.org

TONI’S KITCHEN

Toni’s Kitchen in St. Luke’s Church, Montclair, NJ, has a simple mission: to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food.

Toni’s Kitchen tackles suburban food insecurity by embedding nutritious food in community spaces. Led by Executive Director Anne Mernin, it addresses structural issues through partnerships with 60 organizations and initiatives like mobile markets and a food truck. With thousands of volunteers, it runs programs from after-school meals to home deliveries, ensuring all community members have access to healthy food year-round and emphasizing supporting families and seniors. To get involved or donate, visit: https://toniskitchen.org.

ROSEMARIE’S RESCUE RANCH

Founded in 2017 by Susan Janett and Rosemarie Cafiero, RRR specializes in rescuing dogs from kill shelters. The ranch offers a unique foster-to-adopt model where dogs are placed with pre-approved families for a two-week trial period, fostering a 98% adoption success rate. If not adopted, RRR ensures suitable placements and provides ongoing support. Supported by volunteers and a resale shop, RRR focuses on veterinary care and donations to sustain operations, having saved over 800 dogs since inception.

The Rosemarie’s Rescue Ranch Resale Shop on Bloomfield Avenue funds the rescue, with profits going directly to the animals. Monetary donations, volunteer time, and supplies are always needed. If you are interested in fostering or learning more, contact Susan through Facebook or email: SusanRescue@aol.com.

JANICE BELOVE

The Wonder of Everyday Moments

LLike so many visual artists, Montclair resident Janice Belove started young. Art lessons from elementary school through high school eventually led her to the Maryland Institute College of Art for a BFA and then to Queens College to get her Master of Fine Arts degree. After college a series of what she smiles when referred to as her “regular jobs” allowed her to paint while she lived in New York City. “If I was drawn to a theme,” she says, “it was illustration.”

1989 found her moving with her husband to Montclair and becoming an adjunct Art professor at both the County College of Morris, and Bergen Community College, subsequently accepting a full-time position at a local high school until she retired in 2022 to turn her full attentions to painting and conducting private painting classes in her own studio.

Fishmonger, an 18x24 oil on canvas painted in 2019 exemplifies the illustration approach to her work. A location in San Francisco’s Chinatown in which she confides that some details are invented in this her first attempt working from a photographic reference. “It was the sense of space, the depth from the fish in the foreground through the long narrow room to the window in the back that was interesting.” We love how a mundane moment becomes a festival of interesting details from the figures in the background, the random containers, and the fish waiting to be purchased.

A trip with her husband and sons during the pandemic in 2020 was the inspiration for Road Trip, an 18x24 oil on canvas. Another seemingly ordinary moment in which Belove captures our attention and we become riveted by the scene. How many of us have made one of those long drives while never really noticing how the car becomes full of stuff. The artist has given us a detail rich environment in which we can almost get lost in the elements: luggage, beverage containers, a paperback jammed behind a seat, even a partial view of the backseat occupants. Humorously, she has included a partial view of herself, making the sketch on her iPad that would become a blueprint for the painting.

Belove’s affection for the ordinary moments is nowhere more in view than in Nightime On Abrams Pond, which is a newer work painted entirely on an iPad. She was inspired by David Hockney, and we see his influence both in the technique and style. Another detail rich image; this one of her husband playing the guitar during the evening while at a summer rental. And again, we see her sense of humor including her iPad on the table in the foreground.

Visit her website to see more work. You’ll be captivated by her ability to make ordinary moments nothing short of fascinating.

Mindful Movement

The Mental and Physical Benefits of Low-Impact

Workouts

AFitness doesn’t have to mean high-intensity sweat sessions or pushing your body to the limit. Low-impact workouts— like yoga, Pilates, barre, Tai Chi and walking—offer powerful benefits for both your physical health and mental well-being, often with less strain on the body.

Unlike high-impact activities that stress the joints, low-impact exercises are gentler on the knees, hips, and spine. They improve mobility, balance, and core strength while reducing the risk of injury. These types of movement are ideal for all ages and fitness levels, especially those recovering from injuries or just starting a fitness routine.

Mentally, mindful movement helps relieve stress and promote emotional balance. Gentle stretching, deep breathing, and intentional movement calm the nervous system and increase body awareness. Even a brisk walk in nature can elevate mood, improve focus, and lower anxiety.

These workouts also encourage consistency. Because they’re sustainable and enjoyable, people are more likely to stick with them long-term—turning movement into a daily wellness ritual instead of a chore.

A Smile Opens a Door

Whether you’re looking to tone, strengthen, de-stress, or simply reconnect with your body, low-impact workouts offer a holistic path to wellness that supports both mind and body.

Yoga – Boosts flexibility, balance, and inner calm. Pilates –Strengthens the core and improves posture. Barre – Tones muscles using ballet-inspired movements. Walking – Improves cardiovascular health and mental clarity. Tai Chi – Promotes relaxation and coordination through flowing motions.

Glow from Within The Link Between Nutrition and Radiant Skin

WWhen it comes to healthy, glowing skin, what you put on your plate is just as important as what you apply to your face. Nutrition plays a powerful role in maintaining a clear, hydrated, and youthful complexion—and small dietary shifts can lead to noticeable improvements.

Antioxidants like vitamin C (found in citrus fruits, berries, and bell peppers) help protect skin from environmental damage and support collagen production. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in salmon, flaxseeds, and walnuts, help reduce inflammation and keep the skin barrier strong and supple. Meanwhile, vitamin E (from almonds, sunflower seeds, and spinach) works alongside vitamin C to neutralize free radicals.

Hydration is also key. Drinking plenty of water helps flush toxins from the body and keeps skin plump. Herbal teas and water-rich foods like cucumbers and watermelon also contribute.

Limiting sugar, processed foods, and dairy can also prevent breakouts and dullness.

Skin-Loving Foods to Add to Your Plate

• Blueberries – Rich in antioxidants that protect from premature aging

• Avocados – Packed with healthy fats that keep skin soft and supple

• Sweet Potatoes – High in betacarotene for a healthy glow

• Green Tea – Contains polyphenols that soothe inflammation

• Red Bell Peppers – Vitamin C superstars for collagen support Our Centers Offer:

• Services for Children Dealing with School and Family Dynamics

• Individual/Family/Couples/Children and Teen Therapy

• Variety of Clinical Therapy Expertise

• Group Counseling

• Most Insurances Accepted

• Telemedicine Appointments Available

• Convenient day, evening and Saturday hours Our Goal is to Help

Inflammatory foods often trigger hormonal imbalances and oxidative stress, which can show up on your skin.

Ultimately, skincare starts from the inside. A diet rich in whole, colorful foods doesn’t just nourish your body— it creates a lasting, natural glow you can’t fake with makeup.

MAGNESIUM: The Essential Mineral Your Body Needs

MMagnesium is a vital mineral that plays a crucial role in keeping our bodies functioning—yet many people don’t get enough. Found in every cell, magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical reactions, making it essential for nearly everyone, regardless of age or lifestyle.

One of its most important roles is supporting muscle and nerve function. It helps regulate muscle contractions, including the heartbeat, and supports a calm nervous system. For those

experiencing stress, anxiety, or sleep disturbances, magnesium’s calming effect promotes relaxation and better rest.

Magnesium is also crucial for maintaining bone health. While calcium often receives the spotlight, magnesium helps the body absorb and utilize calcium effectively. It plays a role in maintaining steady blood sugar levels and regulating blood pressure—two factors crucial for cardiovascular health.

Athletes and active individuals benefit from magnesium’s ability to support energy production and prevent muscle cramps. Older adults may find it helpful for managing joint stiffness and improving sleep quality. Even children and teens need adequate magnesium to support

growth and focus. You can find magnesium in leafy greens, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and legumes. However, due to soil depletion and processed diets, supplementation is sometimes necessary.

Ensuring you get enough magnesium can significantly enhance your health. From improving sleep and mood to strengthening your heart and bones, magnesium’s versatility in supporting various health aspects is empowering. It’s a small mineral with a significant impact—benefiting just about everyone.

Types of Magnesium Supplements

Magnesium Glycinate – Gentle on the stomach, often used for anxiety, stress relief, and better sleep.

Magnesium Citrate – Commonly used for constipation and digestive regularity.

Magnesium Oxide – Contains a high amount of elemental magnesium but may not absorb as well; often used for short-term relief of digestive issues.

Magnesium Malate – May help with fatigue and muscle pain; often used by those with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome.

Magnesium Threonate – Crosses the blood-brain barrier and may support memory and cognitive function.

Whenever starting a new supplement, you should consult your physician.

Raising Awareness for Juvenile Arthritis

July marks Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding and support for children living with juvenile arthritis (JA). While arthritis is often associated with older adults, nearly 300,000 children in the United States are affected by some form of JA, making it one of the most common chronic childhood diseases.

Juvenile arthritis isn’t a single disease—it’s an umbrella term for several autoimmune and inflammatory conditions that can affect children under the age of 16. The most common type, juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), causes joint pain, swelling, stiffness, and fatigue. In severe cases, JA can also impact the eyes, skin, and internal organs.

Living with juvenile arthritis can pose physical and emotional challenges. Children may experience limitations in mobility, miss school due to flare-ups or doctor visits, and cope with chronic pain from a young age. However, with early diagnosis and proper treatment—including medications, physical therapy, and sometimes lifestyle changes—many children are able to lead active, fulfilling lives.

This month, advocacy groups like the Arthritis Foundation are highlighting the stories of young warriors, funding research, and encouraging communities to show their

support. You can help by learning more about the disease, donating to pediatric arthritis research, or simply wearing blue to show you care.

Raising awareness helps reduce stigma, improves access to treatment, and brings hope to families navigating life with JA.

Do it right. Here.

When you need relief from joint pain, you want nothing less than the highest level of orthopedic care. At RWJBarnabas Health, you’ll find board-certified surgeons using the latest treatments and technology, including robot-assisted joint replacement and other minimally invasive procedures, with physical therapy right on site. Visit rwjbh.org/ortho to learn more.

FROM DESPAIR TO HOPE

Conquering Peripheral Neuropathy with Rose Gold Wellness

“It’s as though l’m stepping from razor blade to razor blade.”

“It feels like my feet are under attack by fire ants.”

“Like I’m walking on wet paint with rolled up socks.”

And you’re in this kind of pain all the time.

“It’s relentless, keeping you up at night and preventing you from doing even the most mundane tasks. Things that I used to take for granted, like wearing shoes and going grocery shopping. Two of my three children were getting married last year and I wasn’t even sure I was going to be able to attend their weddings,” shares Rose W.

Rose was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy in 2015, a degenerative condition affecting almost 5% of people over the age of 55.

“My doctor sat me down and said, ‘Rose, I’m so sorry to tell you this, but you have peripheral neuropathy. I’m going to prescribe you gabapentin to manage the discomfort but overall, neuropathy is untreatable. My first thought was, ‘we can cure cancer but you can’t stop my feet from hurting?’ It felt like a cruel joke.”

While neuropathy can be caused by a number of things including diabetes and chemotherapy, over 23% of neuropathy cases are classified as idiopathic. In layman’s terms, the cause is unknown. This was the case with Rose. “Basically every question I had was met with an ‘I don’t know. It was depressing to say the least.”

Eventually, Rose was forced to quit her job because the numbness had started to set in and prevented her from driving. Fortunately, she went to a talk Rose Gold Wellness gave on what they were doing to treat peripheral neuropathy.

“I thought it had to be a sham. After so many specialists told me there was no hope here was this Doctor on TV saying she had a 90% success rate in treating neuropathy! I just had to call and I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am that I did.”

Dr. Rosie Strelnick, DACM, founder of Rose Gold Wellness, says that cases like Rose’s are incredibly common. “Almost all of my neuropathy patients have been told at one point or another that there is no hope. I like to think I specialize in offering hope.”

To quote the New York Times, “Chinese medicine proves itself where Western medicine fails.”

“Acupuncture has been treating complicated, chronic conditions like neuropathy for thousands of years,” shares Dr. Rosie.

“I start with a foundation based on this time-tested science and my two decades of clinical experience. I then tailor treatments based on a number of factors including the severity of your neuropathy, how long you’ve had it, whether or not there are any underlying factors, things of that nature. It’s because of these personalized treatment programs that we’re seeing such incredible results!”

Four months after treatment, Rose is back bat work and thriving. “Being back at work isn’t even the most exciting part,” exclaims Rose. “Not only was l able to attend my son’s wedding, but I could walk down the aisle! It was the most magical moment and I have Dr. Rosie to thank for it. To think, I might’ve missed that.” Rose held back tears.

If you’ve recently been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, regardless of its cause, it’s time to call Dr. Rosie and the staff at Rose Gold Wellness. Call (862) 622-6289 to schedule your very own comprehensive consultation and visit rosegoldwellness.com to take advantage of their new new patient offer, a $40 consult (normally $240).

It is recommended that you call in advance as reservations may be required.

No Time Like The Present

TThere’s no better feeling than finishing something important— not just on time, but ahead of time—when the moment is right. That kind of proactive effort doesn’t just make a difference; it defines excellence.

I recently had my roof replaced, and the experience reminded me how powerful it is when someone shows up not just to do a job, but to own it. Beyond materials and measurements, this story is about service, integrity, and the pride of doing things the right way. It all starts with the man behind the work: Nene Silva, founder of Sunnyside Home Improvement.

Barry Farber: Tell me a little about your background.

Nene Silva: I was born in Brazil and came to the U.S. in 1969 with my parents and three brothers. I was 11 when we settled in Irvington, New Jersey. My parents worked incredibly hard to build a better life for us. They taught us the value of hard work and the importance of seizing opportunity.

In 1982, I partnered with a friend to start a roofing business. In the early days, I worked 14-hour shifts, often seven days a week. But I loved it. There’s real satisfaction in building something that lasts—and in knowing the customer is genuinely happy.

We always go the extra mile: custom aluminum flashing, hand-fabricated drip edges, additional venting to keep homes cooler in the summer. I train my team to treat every roof like it’s their own. After 43 years, we’ve never had a single insurance claim. That says everything about our attention to detail.

I’m grateful for this country. My brothers and I built strong lives here. My parents’ sacrifice—leaving their families behind in Brazil—gave us, and now our children, a chance to thrive. I think they’d be proud.

Barry Farber: President John F. Kennedy once said, “The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.” It’s a great reminder to act before a crisis. How does that quote relate to your work?

Silva: That quote says it perfectly. In roofing, you don’t wait for the storm—you prepare in advance. The same goes for every part of life: your health, your finances, your home. Stay ahead of problems before they grow.

That’s why we look beyond the surface. We check for things like moisture buildup, poor ventilation, heat retention—all the small issues that can turn into major damage. Doing the job right the first time saves time, money, and stress. But it’s also about showing up, caring, and giving your best—whether anyone’s watching or not.

Barry Farber: What’s your definition of success?

Nene Silva: Success is simple—it’s family, loving what you do, and being financially secure.

A quick side note: On the first two days the crew was working on my home, I brought them lunch and made sure they had cold water throughout the day. It’s a small gesture, but it matters. Nene smiled and said, “You wouldn’t believe it, but some people don’t even offer you a drink of water.”

That comment stuck with me. Because at the heart of this story isn’t just shingles and flashing—it’s about respect, legacy, and the quiet strength of someone who brings care and commitment to every single day.

There truly is no time like the present—to prepare, to take action, and to do things the right way.
