9th Annual Running with the Devils 5K Raises $300,000 for Essential Health Services DanceWorks Studios Takes Center Stage in Housemaid

More than 2,600 participants laced up for the 9th Annual RWJBarnabas Health Running with the Devils 5K Run & Walk, plus a 5K Skate, on November 2 at the South Mountain Recreation Complex in West Orange, marking the event’s largest turnout yet. Backed by the 30-year partnership between RWJBarnabas Health and the New Jersey Devils, the event raised over $300,000 to support essential health programs across New Jersey.

Jake Reynolds, President of the New Jersey Devils & Prudential Center, and Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo welcomed the crowd as Van Halen’s “Runnin’ with the Devil” set the tone. Devils alumni and mascot appearances added excitement throughout the morning.
After the race, participants enjoyed complimentary admission to Turtle Back Zoo. In response to recent SNAP funding cuts, all leftover food was donated to the Women’s Wellness Food Farmacy at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center for immediate distribution to families in need.
Handcrafted Creations That Turn Wood Into Art

When the pandemic shut down her Caldwell shop, Carolyn Tobin, known by many as Carrie, didn’t put away her paint brushes, she found a new creative direction. After years of refurbishing furniture with chalk paint and decorative design transfers, she shifted from large pieces to small-scale custom wood creations including Lazy Susans, trays, porch leaners, home signs, door hangers, and wall art, each personalized with names, monograms, and meaningful designs.
What began with leftover materials quickly blossomed into a thriving custom gift business. Brides, realtors, and new homeowners now seek out her pieces for engagement gifts, wedding parties, and housewarmings. The appeal is simple: each piece feels personal, hand-crafted, and thoughtful. Every item is designed, stenciled, and finished by Carolyn herself, making every creation truly one of a kind.

It looked like a typical day at DanceWorks Studios in Montclair… until the lobby filled with lighting rigs, the classrooms went dark for cameras, and Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney stepped in as the nanny on set. The psychological thriller The Housemaid filmed scenes at the Montclair studio on January 6, 2025, with the film hitting theaters on December 19.

Owner, Director, Choreographer and Dance Educator Kathy Costa McKeown didn’t just host the production, she also appeared in the movie as the dance teacher. “They asked if I’d be interested, and I said sure,” she says. “It was incredible to see how many people it takes to film even a small scene.”
Dozens of young dancers and extras joined the shoot, along with director Paul Feig and a large crew that transformed the studio overnight.
Kathy, who has taught for more than 30 years, runs a performance-based studio that has taken her dancers to stages around the world, from Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center to London, Italy, Greece, Barcelona, and this summer they will be traveling to Lisbon.

An Afternoon Tea in Caldwell That Brewed Support for a Cure

Even a cold November afternoon felt a bit warmer in Caldwell when more than 50 guests gathered for a Traditional British Afternoon Tea— complete with scones, sandwiches, trivia and fine china—all in the name of a cure.
On Sunday, November 2, 2025, the Whetton family of Caldwell hosted their fourth annual British Afternoon Tea fundraiser at the Caldwell United Methodist Church. Dave and Rita Whetton, joined by their son Enzo,
When the Teacher Is Nine Years Old Livingston

Wcreated the event to honor Rita’s father, Lorenzo Malanga, who passed away from Alzheimer’s disease in 2018. What began as a family tribute has grown into a beloved community tradition.
With help from volunteers, donors and local supporters, guests enjoyed elegant treats, a spirited British quiz, and a holiday sale table filled with homemade items. The fundraiser raised more than $3,500, with every dollar donated to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund in support of critical research.
Serves Up Sweet Fun With the Cake-N-Bake Challenge Game

Who says you need flour and frosting to bake a showstopping cake? Thanks to Livingston resident Amy Friedland, families can “bake” colorful creations straight from the playroom with her award-winning invention, the Cake-N-Bake Challenge game.
hile most kids spend their after-school time playing video games, nine-year-old Felix Acosta of West Orange prefers making them. The young coder first discovered Scratch when his babysitters introduced him to simple dragand-drop programming. Before long, he was building his own games—and now, he’s teaching others how to do the same.
Recently, Felix led a Scratch class at the local library with five eager students ages 7–11. He walked them through animation, characters, and coding basics, and was amazed to see his students create their own mini games by the end. Felix said his favorite moment was watching their faces light up when something they coded finally worked.
He also has a budding interest in YouTube and has already made commentary videos on Roblox games. With a successful first class behind him, this young instructor is excited to return in December—and maybe inspire even more future coders.
Inspired mid-flight on her way to a toy trade show, PR pro Amy blended her love of baking with her work in toys. The result is a fast-paced race where players stack foam cake slices in the correct color order based on recipe cards. The first to build their cake correctly and ring the bell earns a candle card, and the first with six candles wins the chef’s hat.
Recommended for ages 4 and up, the game has become a hit with teens and adults too. With 36 recipe variations, memory, team, and blindfold challenges, and even cards that require building cakes on top of your head, it never plays the same way twice.
Amy has a Barnes & Noble demo planned for Saturday, December 6 at 1pm at 2289 Broadway, NY. Cake-N-Bake Challenge is available at Barnes & Noble nationwide and online, making it an easy holiday gift pick.

Baby’s Closet Brings Dignity, One Diaper at a Time
BY JACKIE SCHATELL

TThree years ago, two retired Superior Court Judges—Judge Francine Schott and Judge Michelle Hollar Gregory— decided they needed to do something to “pay it forward.” What started as a simple diaper drive for a local food pantry blossomed into the creation of Baby’s Closet, a diaper bank, baby clothes closet and baby hygiene pantry. Judges Schott and Hollar-Gregory combined forces with three other women: Karen Boettinger, Sharyn Smith and Hemilyn Hollar-Gregory to form the non-profit that today helps to
keep 60 babies a month clean, dry and clothed.
Baby’s Closet occupies donated space in, and distributes diapers from, the Community building of the United Presbyterian Church of West Orange. The donation of the space by the Church was instrumental in the formation of Baby’s Closet. Every inch is packed with diapers, wipes, and baby essentials for families across Essex County, including West Orange, the Oranges, and Newark.

Unlike traditional drop-in diaper banks, Baby’s Closet works with families who register to receive diapers. Each month, caregivers email their baby’s weight and diaper size. Volunteers pack monthly bundles of 100 diapers and wipes for each baby. Families also receive babyfriendly laundry detergent, shampoo, lotion, and rash cream along with donated baby clothes.
The diaper need is immense. National studies show that roughly 40% of U.S. families with children in diapers cannot afford an adequate supply. Government assistance programs like WIC and SNAP cannot be used for diapers. “People assume there must be some government help out there, but there isn’t,” Judge Schott says. “No parent should ever have to choose between food and clean diapers.”
Baby’s Closet presently distributes approximately 4,000 diapers a month. Most are donated through community drives, an Amazon wish list, or purchased with financial contributions from friends, family and civic groups. Referrals are made by social workers, hospitals, schools, and word of mouth. “We try to meet people’s needs without sacrificing their dignity. If you treat people with dignity, the trust spreads,” Judge Schott says. “A mom tells her friend, and suddenly we’re welcoming another family who didn’t know help existed.”
There are challenges including the everincreasing cost of diapers. The team is exploring grants, corporate donations, and partnerships with diaper suppliers. Their goal is to provide for 70 babies by the end of 2026.
For information, to donate, see the Amazon wish list, hold a diaper drive, or request assistance, email thebabyscloset@aol.com or visit babyscloset.org.

W From Transplant to Timeouts: Cedar Grove’s Charlie Roussel Keeps Showing Up
When Cedar Grove’s young athletes run onto the court, most don’t know the man guiding their drills once spent 170 days in a hospital room fighting for his life. They just know Coach Charlie believes in them. And for Charlie Roussel, a heart transplant survivor who has dedicated decades to working with kids, showing up is its own kind of victory.
Charlie began coaching at 21, long before he became a beloved special education teacher in Union City. For years he taught, coached varsity basketball, umpired nearly every level of baseball and softball, and built a reputation as the guy who always found time for one more kid who needed guidance.

Then his health collapsed. Within three years, Charlie endured two heart surgeries, a pacemaker, a lengthy hospitalization, and a harrowing heart-and-liver transplant in June 2022. Recovery was grueling. He had to relearn how to walk and even how to swallow. He spent over a month in ICU following his transplant. His wife, Kristin, was the only one their family of four allowed to visit under lingering COVID restrictions. Their children, 7 and 11 at the time, sent love through screens.
BY JACKIE SCHATELL

Even today, Charlie manages a full medication schedule, strict monitoring, regular biopsies, and the ever-present risk of rejection. Yet the moment he could safely return home, he returned to the court.
Now 57 and retired on disability, Charlie volunteers with Cedar Grove youth sports. He helps coach boys varsity basketball, leads the seventh and eighth grade girls teams, and runs free skills clinics for middle schoolers. He teaches in short bursts, resting between demonstrations, leaning on fellow coaches when his body demands it. But his presence never wavers.
For Charlie, it isn’t about wins. It’s about development, confidence, and connection. He has coached and umpired thousands of kids from Secaucus to Union City to Cedar Grove, from Little League fields to Lincoln Park diamonds. He has communicated in Spanglish with pitchers struggling on the mound and shown up for teams simply because someone needed him.
Kristin chuckles that everywhere they go, someone knows Charlie. After all these years, he remains the same steady presence: humble, warm, fully invested in kids who deserve a coach who believes in them.
“I’m not an ‘I’ guy,” Charlie says. But Cedar Grove knows better. Local heroes don’t always wear capes. Sometimes they wear whistles, carry clipboards, and quietly show up—again and again, even after the hardest season of their lives.
The Rousel family reunited at home on August 23, 2022 — the day Charlie came home. Back row: Kristin and Samantha. Front row: Charlie and Madlynn.

L Livingston Gym Where Kids Discover Movement, Confidence & Creativity
BY MICHELLE LEMIEUX, PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN
Livingston Gym is more than just a gymnastics studio; it’s a place where kids can enjoy physical activity and creativity in a warm, inclusive and fun environment. With a full roster of classes for all skill levels, this boutique gym offers something for everyone.

Run by owners Jackie and Pasquale Ranalli of West Orange, Livingston Gym prides itself on its small class sizes, individualized attention and familial feel. The Ranallis’ passion for athletics and community encouraged them to open the studio in May 2023, which they say has been one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences of their career.

“Our goal has always been for children and caregivers to feel like this is an extension of home,” Jackie says. “We focus on kids as a whole and meeting them where they are in their skillset.”
With classes for children ages nine months to 12 years of age, Livingston Gym offers traditional gymnastics, as well as Ninja, Move and Tumble, and Music and Movement classes. They are also launching new classes this winter including Parent/Child Yoga, as well as Tumble and Create, while Open Gym is available to the public every Friday. Livingston Gym also hosts weekend birthday parties and mini camps throughout the year.
Enrollment is now open for Livingston Gym’s 12-week Winter Session, which can also be bundled with its 10-week Spring Session for additional savings. Flexible make up schedules, three week trials, and multi-class and sibling discounts are also available. There’s no better time to join!

A Focus on Wellness Gives JESPY Clients a Winning Edge

TThrough programs such as Athletics & Fitness, Clinical & Behavioral Support, and Client Care, clients at JESPY House have meaningful opportunities to improve their fitness, build confidence, relieve stress, and maintain overall health.
For nearly five decades, JESPY House—a nonprofit organization supporting adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities—has helped clients successfully pursue and achieve their personal goals.
JESPY’s Athletics & Fitness Program offers individual and group training sessions, along with opportunities for clients to compete in Special Olympics New Jersey. Participation in the program has enabled clients to increase endurance, maintain healthy weight, and strengthen their social skills.
Through individual clinical assessments, many clients receive specialized counseling from JESPY’s Clinical & Behavioral Support Department. Sessions include: how to best enhance coping skills; the use of techniques to manage challenges; and ways to improve relationships with family and friends. The Department also offers a wide range of services to individuals in the community.
The JESPY nurse conducts weekly visits to the agency’s shared houses, where clients reside as housemates, to help monitor and support each client’s health and well-being.
JESPY maintains an ongoing partnership with Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center’s Community Health & Outreach Program, which provides clients with health education workshops. In addition, JESPY hosts on-site vaccine clinics and informational presentations from Planned Parenthood.
JESPY also supports over 350 clients with employment, day habilitation, and residental services.

The Longevity Lifestyle: Small Daily Habits That Add Up

LLiving a longer, healthier life isn’t just about big lifestyle changes—it’s shaped by the small, consistent choices made every day. The “longevity lifestyle” centers on simple habits that support physical strength, mental clarity, and emotional wellbeing, especially as we age.

One of the most powerful habits is staying active. Even gentle, low-impact movement—such as walking, stretching, or chair exercises—boosts circulation, supports joint health, and lifts mood. Just 15–20 minutes a day can make a meaningful difference without feeling overwhelming.
Nutrition also plays a key role. Prioritizing whole foods, especially fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, gives the body the nutrients it needs to maintain energy and support immune function. Hydration matters too; sipping water throughout the day helps digestion, cognition, and mobility.
Equally important is nurturing the mind. Cognitive exercises, reading, puzzles, and learning new skills help maintain brain flexibility, while staying socially connected reduces feelings of isolation and supports emotional resilience. Small moments of purpose—whether volunteering, mentoring, or simply engaging in hobbies—enrich daily life and bring joy.
Rest rounds out the longevity lifestyle. Quality sleep allows the body to repair, recharge, and maintain balance. Creating a calming bedtime routine supports deeper, more restorative rest.
Ultimately, longevity isn’t about perfection—it’s about consistency. When small habits are practiced daily, they add up to improved health, greater independence, and a richer, more fulfilling life.
Choosing Clubs & Activities that Spark Joy in Senior Living Communities
OOne of the greatest benefits of senior living communities is the opportunity to explore interests that may have taken a back seat during earlier phases of life. Choosing the right clubs and activities can transform daily routines, boost emotional well-being, and create deeper connections with neighbors who share similar passions.
Start by considering personal interests—both familiar and new. For example, a lifelong reader may find joy in a book club, while someone who never felt they had “creative talent” might discover fulfillment in painting or craft workshops. Modern senior living communities also offer specialized groups like photography clubs, gardening circles, memoir-writing workshops, and music

appreciation groups. These activities provide not only an avenue for expression but also gentle cognitive stimulation.
Social connection is another important factor. Clubs become micro-communities,

helping residents form meaningful friendships. Group fitness classes, walking clubs, and chair yoga promote physical wellness while reducing feelings of isolation. Residents who enjoy helping others may find a sense of purpose through volunteer groups, mentoring programs, or intergenerational activities.
It’s also helpful to try new options without pressure. Many communities offer trial sessions or monthly activity showcases so residents can explore without commitment. Staff can play a key role by encouraging residents to identify what brings them energy, curiosity, or comfort.
in beautiful Livingston, our community offers a highly personalised senior living experience. Contact us to book a tour today and discover how our residents receive best-in-class care.

Pediatric urology specialists for wherever your child’s life takes you.
FIBROMYALIGA - The Invisible Illness
You wake up some days and can’t get out of bed. Most evenings the pain is so intense you can’t even make dinner for your family. The exhaustion takes over and covers you like a heavy blanket. And of course depression hits: you can’t clean your house or play with your kids. You wonder if you’re any good to anybody like this. This is life with Fibromyalgia. And it was everyday life for Kelly C. of Verona, NJ.
“I would spend my days in bed as the pain traveled to different parts of my body. Often it would feel as though there were bugs scurrying under my skin, a sensation I wish on no one. Look, I knew my family needed me, and it was devastating to disappoint them day after day because I didn’t feel well,” shares Kelly.
Fibromyalgia is a complicated and chronic condition that disrupts the lives of over 4 million people in the U.S. Because of inconsistent and all-encompassing symptoms, fibromyalgia remains one of the most difficult conditions to diagnose and treat. Ultimately, it becomes a diagnosis of exclusion. Scans show nothing, tests come back inconclusive, and your questions don’t have answers so the doctors diagnose you with “fibro.”
A majority of practitioners will recommend anti-inflammatory diets, increasing your intake of magnesium, or prescribe prescription medications that come with a slew of uncomfortable side effects. All of these are band-aids, masking the symptoms rather than fixing them.

“All the doctors and specialists I met with couldn’t offer me a real solution. Some even had the audacity to tell me that my pain was all in my head. I had never felt so defeated and disrespected. I started doing my own research—reading articles that told me to go gluten-free and eliminate toxins even in my face wash. I did all of it and didn’t find any reliet However, I was having such a hard time focusing and concentrating. I’m not entirely confident in anything I did.”
Kelly’s story is not uncommon amongst those suffering from fibromyalgia. The pain is inconsistent and unrelenting, causing debilitating chronic fatigue and brain fog, something the afflicted not-so affectionately refer to as ‘fibro fog.’ There are a few suggested causes for fibromyalgia including genetics, infections, and physical trauma, but so much about this disease is still so unknown that it has been dubbed the ‘invisible illness.’ Until now!
“I saw something on TV featuring Dr. Rosie and her work with Fibromyalgia. At this point, I was willing to try anything. And thank God I did. Going to Rose Gold Wellness has allowed me to go from surviving to truly thriving!” Kelly exclaims. “Since starting treatment, I went from not being able to cook dinner for my family to cooking for my daughter’s entire graduation party and playing slip-n-slide with two dozen teenagers.

I was even able to go visit my mother for the first time in two years! Before I was unable to make the ride because it put me in too much pain. l even hugged her!”
And why do Dr. Rosie and the staff at Rose Gold have a 90% success rate in treating Fibromyalgia?
Dr. Rosie shares all. “In addition to acupuncture, which has been used to treat pain for thousands of years, we use ATP Resonance Bio Therapy®. It’s a cutting edge technology that targets specific tissues in the body. It then reprograms them for optimal performance. We have protocols for a myriad of chronic conditions from neuropathy to tendonitis. We can even target the pain and inflammation caused by fibromyalgia.”
It’s in combining her decades of experience, the time-tested science of acupuncture, and modern medical solutions like ATP Resonance Bio Therapy® that Rose Gold Wellness of Montclair are giving much needed relief to those suffering with fibromyalgia and other complicated, chronic conditions. Because Dr. Rosie designs very personalized treatment programs for each of her patients, an initial consultation is required in order to receive treatment.

Quick, StressRelief Techniques

SStress can strike at any moment—during a busy workday, while commuting, or even in the middle of a conversation. Having simple, portable tools to bring your nervous system back into balance can make all the difference. These quick stress-relief techniques can be done anytime, anywhere, and require no equipment.
One of the most effective methods is controlled breathing. Try the 4-4-6 technique: inhale slowly for four counts, hold for another four, and exhale for six. This longer exhale signals the body to relax, lowering your heart rate and easing tension. Just one minute of this breathing pattern can help restore a sense of calm and clarity.
If you can step away momentarily, a brief change of environment works wonders. A walk to the nearest window, a few minutes outside, or even simply standing up and stretching resets your mind. Shoulder rolls, performed slowly and deliberately, release built-up tightness from long periods of sitting or stress-induced tension.
Small pauses throughout the day are more powerful than they seem. These micro-breaks interrupt the cycle of stress before it escalates, helping prevent burnout and improving focus. Think of them as tiny investments in your well-being— moments that ground you and allow you to return to tasks with renewed energy.
Whether you’re at your desk, in a meeting, or on the go, these quick techniques help you stay centered. With regular practice, they can become a reliable part of your self-care toolkit.
Unplug to Recharge: The Benefits of a Digital Detox
IIn today’s always-online world, our devices constantly compete for attention—buzzing, pinging, and lighting up with every new notification. While technology keeps us connected, it can also drain mental energy, disrupt sleep, and distract us. A digital detox doesn’t mean abandoning your phone forever—it’s simply choosing intentional breaks to restore balance. Be aware that starting may feel difficult, but gradual steps can help you overcome resistance and stay motivated.
Designating phone-free hours each day is a powerful place to start. Try keeping devices away during meals so you can fully enjoy your food and engage with the people around you. In the evening, give yourself at least an hour without screens before bed. Starting small makes the goal feel more manageable, and studies consistently show that reducing exposure to blue light at night leads to deeper, more restorative sleep.
Beyond improved rest, unplugging creates space for mindfulness, helping you feel calmer and more centered. Without constant digital noise, your mind can settle, creativity flows more freely, and simple activities—like walking, reading, or just sitting quietly— become surprisingly refreshing. You may notice conversations feel

richer, your attention span lengthens, and you reconnect with parts of life that get overshadowed by screen time.

A digital detox isn’t about restriction—it’s about reclaiming your time and energy, helping you feel more in control of your habits. Start with small, consistent steps. Your mind and body will thank you.

Morning Habits That Set a Positive Tone for the Day
HHow you start your morning often influences the rest of your day. Beginning your day with intention doesn’t require a lengthy routine; just a few simple habits can nurture both your mind and body. Start with gentle stretching to wake up your muscles, improve circulation, and release any tension from the day before. This small act signals to your body that it’s time to rise and move with purpose.
After stretching, drink a full glass of water. Your body naturally dehydrates overnight, and hydrating first thing in the morning helps boost your energy levels, supports digestion, and clears mental fog, giving you a refreshing start. Consider adding lemon or a pinch of salt to your water for extra benefits, such as improved taste and enhanced nutrient absorption.
Another valuable habit is to take a moment to write down three things you are grateful for. This quick practice shifts your mindset toward positivity and helps you focus on the good aspects of your life. Over time, it can help cultivate resilience, reduce stress, and enhance your overall emotional wellbeing. Gratitude can transform negative thoughts into uplifting reflections, nurturing a more positive outlook.
Even dedicating just five minutes to stillness—whether through deep breathing, meditation, or simply enjoying the quiet—can create a sense of calm that carries throughout your day. These small choices enable you to begin grounded, energized, and prepared to face whatever comes your way, leading to improved productivity and happiness.

Shovel Smart:

SShoveling snow may seem like a simple winter chore, but recognizing the risks highlights the importance of following safety measures to prevent injuries. Cold weather, slippery surfaces, and physical strain can all increase the chances of injury. With a few precautions, however, you can protect your body and stay safe during winter clean-up.
One of the most critical steps is preparing your body before you start. Treat shoveling like a workout to help you feel capable and in control. Begin with light stretching to warm up your muscles, especially your back, shoulders, and legs. Wearing layered clothing helps you stay warm without overheating, while gloves and boots with proper traction reduce your chance of slipping.
When lifting snow, use proper technique to reduce strain. Bend at your knees — not your waist — and push snow when possible, rather than lifting it. If lifting is necessary, take small scoops and keep the shovel close to your body to prevent back injury. Remember to take frequent breaks, especially if you feel your breathing or heart rate increase significantly.
It’s also important to stay hydrated, even in cold temperatures. Your body loses fluids through exertion, and dehydration increases the risk of muscle strain. Keeping hydrated helps you feel cared for and prepared during your shoveling tasks.
Finally, know when to stop. If you experience chest discomfort, dizziness, or shortness of breath, stop shoveling immediately and seek medical attention. Being aware of these signs encourages you to listen to your body and prioritize your health.

Trying to Conceive Healing Gathering to Support Your Journey
Join The Wellness Place for a restorative evening devoted to women’s wellness and fertility. This intimate gathering brings together three compassionate practitioners who offer a gentle, bodybased approach to reducing pelvic tension, balancing hormones, and supporting fertility—whether you are conceiving naturally or undergoing IVF or IUI.
Through the integrated modalities of Fertility Acupuncture, Womb Awakening, and Pelvic Physical Therapy, the practitioners work with the body’s innate wisdom to improve blood and lymph flow, promote tissue repair, encourage hormonal balance, calm the nervous system, and ease stress and inflammation. Enjoy a gentle meditation along with hands-on healing and grounding practices.
Patti Safian, founder and Acupuncturist, helps identify and correct subtle imbalances using fine needles, herbs, and nutritional guidance to support reproductive health, egg quality, implantation, and emotional grounding.
Dhyana Jalande Kluth, Womb Awakening practitioner, offers intuitive bodywork and ancestral healing to help release stored trauma and reconnect women to their feminine essence, playful joy, and creative power.

Courage
BY BARRY FARBER
OOne of my favorite quotes on courage is:
“The secret to happiness is freedom… And the secret to freedom is courage.”
—Thucydides
Happiness comes from freedom— freedom to make your own choices, to pursue what truly matters, and to live a life guided by purpose rather than fear. But freedom doesn’t simply arrive on its own. It requires courage. Courage to take risks, to step away from the comfort of the crowd, and to confront fear rather than avoid it. It’s the quiet but powerful decision to move forward even when uncertainty stands in the way.
Last month we talked about Bosco the Bear and his secret about keeping a positive attitude and “giving a smile to all you see…” This month we turn to Sheba the Wolf, who represents courage and “being as brave as you can be…”

A positive attitude is important, but without the courage to act—especially when things become difficult—we never get to discover how strong, capable, and resilient we truly are. Courage is what transforms a hopeful mindset into meaningful results.
I often wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t made that difficult phone call, tried that new idea, or stepped into the unknown with a business concept that nobody else understood at the time. Every major turning point in my life came from a moment when fear whispered “don’t,” and courage answered back with “try.”
The word courage comes from the Latin cuer, meaning “heart.” At its core, courage is the strength of spirit that allows us to face danger, challenge, or uncertainty instead of shrinking away from it. It does not mean the absence of fear. In fact, those who feel no fear at all can become reckless, careless, and even dangerous to themselves and others.

Real courage means knowing fear—feeling it fully—yet choosing to move forward anyway. It’s looking fear in the eyes and saying, “You may slow me down, but you will not stop me.”
Many years ago, I came across an acronym for F.E.A.R.: False Evidence Appearing Real
Most of the time the fear we feel isn’t based on reality—it’s based on the story we think will happen. And that inner voice, if left unchecked, can talk us out of opportunities, growth, and experiences that were meant to shape our lives for the better. Don’t let that voice choose fear over action.
When we look back on our lives, we rarely remember the moments when everything felt easy. We remember the moments when we were challenged— when we confronted fear, acted with courage, and discovered something of value within ourselves. These are the stories we pass down to our children and grandchildren so they understand that fear is natural, but allowing fear to dictate our actions is a choice.
And in the end, we begin to see the truth behind Thucydides’ words:
Happiness comes from the freedom to act—and that freedom is only possible when we find the courage to take the first step.
“It’s not because things are difficult that we do not dare, it is because we do not dare that things are difficult.”
