Pots With Purpose

AAt 12 years old, most kids save for sneakers or games. Reya Sonthalia saves for comforters, vacuum cleaners, and kitchen supplies for women she has never met.

A seventh grader from Short Hills, Reya has turned a childhood love of making things into a business with a mission. Her hand-painted terracotta pots decorated with handmade polymer clay motifs have earned her $300 to $500 and allowed her to send half of every sale to Sierra House, a transitional home in West Orange for young women building new lives.

Reya’s workbench is as personal as her purpose. Her most iconic design, the Ocean pot, is a crowd favorite. Each tiny scene is inspired by a memory. A drifting jellyfish recalls the glowing tanks at the oceanarium in Singapore. A small stingray comes from a family vacation. Every shell on the rim is made by pressing clay into real shells from the collection she and her brother have gathered on trips. Nothing is mass produced. Every detail passes through her hands.

Her giving spirit started long before the pots. During COVID, Reya joined Millburn Inspire to assemble care packages for frontline workers and sell Rainbow Loom bracelets and Perler bead keychains to raise

money for essentials. After Hurricane Ida, she rallied friends to sell more keychains and bracelets, raising over $600. The group handed the money to the mayor of Millburn, and Reya went on to raise additional funds and sponsor 20 meals for families on Ridgewood Road in Millburn.

Polymer Clay became her newest canvas last year. A Mother’s Day sale of 13 pots brought in $300 to $400, including $220 that purchased bedding sets for Sierra House. She reinvested the rest into supplies, then spent months preparing for Rocktoberfest and holiday sales, where her Diwali, Halloween, and Christmas pots drew steady crowds.

Reya also volunteers through Millburn Inspire at Sierra House, helping turn an empty building into a home for 25 young women. As the holidays approach, she is aiming to sell at least six more pots, raising another $120, so she can walk into the shelter in mid-December and deliver the essentials they still need.

For Reya, art is not just something pretty on a shelf. It is a way to change what another girl finds when she opens the door to a brand new life.

To make a purchase or donate, contact Reya’s mother, Rakhee Sonthalia, at 201-637-0529 or rakhees77@gmail.com. Items can also be purchased directly for Sierra House directly at amazon.com/hz/ wishlist/ls/YUJO83Z8JRI3?ref_=wl_share

Community Connection Becomes a Lifeline at The Support Network of Madison

On any given evening in Madison, while most people are winding down, the Support Network of Madison. NJ is just getting started. A watercolor class might be wrapping up, a mindfulness workshop beginning, a middle school hang out at the Madison Community House, or a cluster of neighbors gathering at The Joyful Shoppe for Craft and Connect Night. At the heart of it all is a simple belief quietly fueling a growing movement: community connection shouldn’t come with a price tag that most can’t afford.

Founded in 2022 by a small group of volunteers led by guidance counselor and therapist Jen Walters, the Support Network of Madison, NJ has grown into a hyper-local mental health lifeline with a remarkably simple model: make support accessible, welcoming, and radically affordable. Their classes cost under $40, many under $20, and many completely free. There is no profit margin, ever. Everything is cost-share, designed so no one is priced out of activities that nourish

mental health and provide the opportunity to make friends.

Word spread quickly. Today, nearly 300 household members from Madison, Chatham, Summit, Florham Park, and beyond participate in the Network’s workshops, support groups, and creative sessions. “Everyone knows someone struggling,” Jen says. “People want to help. When you give them an accessible way to show up for others, they do.”

That ethos extends to The Joyful Shoppe, the nonprofit retail and event space gifted to the Network for 2025 by Jenny and David Stone of the Smart Family Foundation. Opened in February 2025, the shoppe features over 25 hyper local vendors who are mostly women owned and many of whom are home based, offering handmade gifts, journals, candles, cards, yarn, and small treasures meant to spark connection. The space doubles as a gathering hub, hosting near-daily classes, open mic nights, and community events.

Vendors consign at a higher rate than in typical shops, ensuring small businesses thrive alongside the Network itself. The shoppe is hoping to become a permanent piece of the Support Network and is currently seeking sponsors for 2026.

But some of the most meaningful work happens outside the Shoppe’s walls. Each May, for Mental Health Month, volunteers blanket Madison in green ribbons, reminding neighbors that mental health is a shared priority. Kids host lemonade stands to raise money so local families facing financial hardship can receive sponsored memberships to the Madison Community Pool. Last summer, the Network sponsored seven families; this year, they achieved eight! The Network and its sponsors provide 25 weeks of free family art activities with local artist Marianne Tuttle to provide tangible and enriching connections at the Madison Farm and Artisan Market.

For Jen, the impact is measured in moments of connection, whether it is a child who feels included, a parent who finds community, or a neighbor who walks into a class alone and leaves with new friends. “In this world, we need reminders that we are here for one another,” Jen says. “This is our small way of doing that.”

Small, perhaps, yet undeniably heroic.

Berkeley Heights

Author

Inspires Readers of Every Age

For longtime Berkeley Heights writer Pamela Hegarty, storytelling has taken many forms, but her latest adventure is winning the hearts of young readers. Her newest book, Jo Moonstone and the Atlantis Diamond, written for upper middle grade audiences, follows Jo and her misfit team of friends as they race beneath the sea to find the legendary Atlantis Diamond before a powerful villain claims it.

Filled with heart, courage, and high-tech wonders, it is the first in a planned trilogy, with a second book in progress.

While her newest work targets ages nine through twelve, Pamela is also well known for her Christa Devlin archaeological quest thriller series. Readers love the mix of history, mystery, romance, and adventure as Christa searches for legendary treasures including the Ark of the Covenant. Pamela is also working on a cozy fantasy story, which is a lighter style of fantasy that builds rich, whimsical settings but keeps the conflicts mild and the tone heartwarming.

Jo Moonstone and the Atlantis Diamond is available wherever books are sold.

Native Gardens Blossom Thanks to Friends of the Millburn Library

More native gardens will soon be sprouting around Millburn, thanks to a new initiative by Friends of the Millburn Library. Last spring, the group installed a Native Seed Library inside the Glen Avenue entrance and began offering free packets of locally harvested native seeds for residents to plant at home.

The program builds upon earlier efforts to encourage ecological gardening and has grown with help from community members including Odarka Stockert, Radhika Iyengar, and Vanita Gangwal, who harvest and donate seeds from their own gardens. Friends Vice President Sapna Gupta oversees the initiative, supported by a team of volunteers who clean, sort, and package the seeds for public distribution.

“By sharing local seeds, we’re helping residents reconnect with nature right in their own backyards while supporting pollinators and biodiversity,” Sapna said.

Seeds are available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis. To get involved, email friends@millburnlibrary.org

Chatham’s Youngest Rock Stars Are Still “Unknown”—But Not for Long

They call themselves The Still Unknown, but in Chatham, everyone already knows the rock-ready band of four 13-year-old schoolmates, three of whom first discovered their passion for music through School of Rock before bringing their talents together.

Singer Leo Zotti, guitarist Derek Kahney, drummer Ben Stroud, and keyboardist Max Arent have played everywhere from New York City to the legendary Stone Pony, where packed crowds and bright lights only fueled their love of performing. They will next perform on 12/4 at the Cougars Against Cancer fundraiser at Chatham High School.

The band mostly rocks covers, but they’ve also written original music and recently recorded their first song together in a professional studio in LA while also meeting with a major record label that has expressed interest in their sound.

Even better, The Still Unknown is a band with heart. They donate all their performance earnings to charity, supporting children’s cancer research and other local causes.

With weekly rehearsals, big energy, and even bigger dreams, these Chatham teens are determined to spread the joy of music—one stage at a time. Unknown for now, but not for long.

If you or someone you know in Essex/Morris County is doing something interesting, send an email to Jackie.subessex@gmail.com

A Chatham Teen is Changing the Conversation on Period Equity

When Chatham High School senior, Asher Robson, got her period at the library in eighth grade and found no products available, she walked to a CVS and promised other girls would not face the same situation. Her Girl Scout Gold Award project, “Period Power: Breaking the Cycle,” grew from that moment into a movement for period equity and education.

Asher installed a free Aunt Flow period product dispenser in the Library of the Chathams after raising more than $600 selling Taylor Swift–inspired friendship bracelets. With help from generous donors, she supplied 500 pads and 500 tampons to keep it stocked. She also hosted a workshop that produced 50 period kits. Twenty-five were placed in a middle school locker room and 25 were donated to a nonprofit serving homeless teens.

She received a proclamation from Chatham Township and met with Claire Coder, founder and CEO of Aunt Flow, for a lunch meeting. Asher is now working with NJ assemblywoman Dunn on legislation requiring public libraries to provide free period products and continues her other advocacy through an annual diaper drive benefiting Moms Helping Moms.

Maplewood Resident Launches Career Guide for Job Seekers

Maplewood resident Cara Bedick’s debut book, Your Next Big Career Move, will be released on December 16, offering much-needed support to job seekers navigating a challenging market. A publishing professional for 20 years, Cara was inspired to write the book after experiencing a period of unemployment in 2024. She wanted to create something helpful for people facing long searches, resume black holes, and the uncertainty of waiting.

The book is structured as a journal filled with prompts, reflection exercises, and practical guidance. Cara says it’s designed not only for those currently out of work, but also recent graduates, first-time job seekers, and professionals considering a change. It covers essential topics including interview preparation, resume optimization, and workplace adaptability, which she says is one of today’s most in-demand traits.

Cara’s goal is to empower job seekers with confidence and career clarity during their employment transition. Your Next Big Career Move will be available everywhere books are sold, including Maplewood’s Words Bookstore.

METC Gala Raises Over $50,000 for Education

TThe Museum of Early Trades & Crafts celebrated its mission and supporters during its annual Fundraising Gala on October 9 at the Park Avenue Club. This year’s theme, “Celebrating Our Community,” honored the many community partners who help the museum flourish.

Guests mingled amid lush garden-inspired décor symbolizing growth and collaboration while enjoying cocktails, fine dining, and live jazz by The Jerry Vezza Trio. Master of Ceremonies and actor Jim Conroy led an exciting live auction that helped raise more than $50,000 to benefit METC’s educational programs for students, seniors, and people with disabilities.

Special recognition was given to community partners The Support Network, The Kubert School, the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund and the Morris County Board of County Commissioners.

Through events like this, METC continues to inspire and educate thousands each year—cultivating curiosity, creativity, and connection across generations.

Bar Bacoa:

Summit’s SoCal-Inspired Backyard Hangout

Brandon Gutierrez, service manager, Alexis De Leon, bartender; Dylan Baker, managing partner; Chef Rob Tami

BBAR BACOA’S KITCHEN EQUIPMENT ARRIVED ON THE VERY DAY GOVERNOR PHIL MURPHY HALTED NON-ESSENTIAL CONSTRUCTION IN MARCH 2020, LEAVING OWNER DYLAN BAKER SIMPLY TO WATCH AND WONDER.

WOULD THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA-INSPIRED TEX-MEX RESTAURANT – HIS SECOND CONCEPT – EVER OPEN ITS DISTINCTIVE GARAGE DOORS?

In September 2020, Bar Bacoa – born amid extraordinary circumstances and thanks to riverboat gambler confidence –made its debut.

Baker was, at the time, working around the clock next door trying to save Summit House despite furloughing most of his staff amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He and a few vital team members served only “Grab + Go” family dinners for more than a year to make that happen.

“Despite the uncertainty of the moment, and the insanity of that year, I just wasn’t ready to give up on Bar Bacoa,” Baker says now, laughing. “Perhaps it was foolishness, but this vision meant too much to me.”

Today, it is one of Summit’s most vibrant and beloved neighborhood hangouts, with Friday night Karaoke, live music Saturdays, and inspired mouth-watering cuisine.

Bar Bacoa is owned by Baker and his wife, Melissa, along with partners Tyler and Sara Reeder, the same foursome behind Summit House. For BarB, as it is nicknamed, they envisioned something casual and lively, distinct from their elegant sister restaurant yet equally rooted in craft, hospitality, and community.

The Bakers once lived in Santa Barbara and wanted Bar Bacoa to channel that laid-back West Coast spirit with a relaxed, backyard-barbecue energy. The name is a nod to tradition: “barbacoa” is the centuries-old Mexican method of slow-cooking meat in underground pits. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and curated, with a hint of nostalgia. Vinyl spins on the record player, much of it from the collection of Baker’s late father, John.

A recent redesign by Nashville interior designer Jessica Adams opened up the dining room. The refresh added a banquette, new lighting, repainted walls, reframed artwork, and a projection screen offering everything from classic movie nights to weekend football.

– CHEF ROB TAMI

At the heart of the kitchen is a wood smoker, where Chef Rob Tami slow smokes meats and vegetables before turning them into tacos, bowls, and plates that feel comforting and creative. The restaurant highlights “from-scratch” cooking, including its salsas, marinades and cult-favorite Alabama white sauce.

“The fun is taking simple ingredients and giving them depth through time, smoke, and technique,” Tami says. “We are not reinventing tacos, just making every component the best version of itself.”

Brandon Gutierrez

Renowned Executive Chef AJ Capella oversees the broader culinary direction. Soon after joining the Summit House team, he and Baker traveled to cooking school at Casa Jacaranda in Mexico City, where they learned sauces, spice blends, and cooking techniques that now inform the menu. Guest favorites include the Baja Fish Tacos, Queso Birria Tacos, carnitas, smoked wings, and coconut tres leches cake.

Behind the bar, Alexis De Leon leads a program centered on fresh-squeezed citrus and clean, balanced cocktails. The menu highlights a curated selection of tequilas, mezcals, and agave spirits, along with bourbons that often surprise first-time guests. Top sellers include the Mexican Daisy, classic and frozen margaritas, and grapefruit-forward Paloma.

The crowd ranges from after-work regulars and families to friends and first dates who love the laid-back atmosphere. Happy Hour is a big draw, and Bar Bacoa also hosts bar takeovers, parties, corporate gatherings, and offers catering.

Each December, the space transforms into a Christmas Cantina holiday pop-up (with this year’s immersive décor by Lauren Fisher of Step It Up Designs), seasonal cocktails, and dishes that draw crowds.

Five years in, Baker’s gamble continues to delight.

Unplug to Recharge: The Benefits of a Digital Detox

IIn today’s always-online world, our devices constantly compete for attention—buzzing, pinging, and lighting up with every new notification. While technology keeps us connected, it can also drain mental energy, disrupt sleep, and distract us. A digital detox doesn’t mean abandoning your phone forever—it’s simply choosing intentional breaks to restore balance. Be aware that starting may feel difficult, but gradual steps can help you overcome resistance and stay motivated.

Designating phone-free hours each day is a powerful place to start. Try keeping devices away during meals so you can fully enjoy your food and engage with the people around you. In the evening, give yourself at least an hour without screens before bed. Starting small makes the goal feel more manageable, and studies consistently show that reducing exposure to blue light at night leads to deeper, more restorative sleep.

Beyond improved rest, unplugging creates space for mindfulness, helping you feel calmer and more centered. Without constant digital noise, your mind can settle, creativity flows more freely, and simple activities—like walking, reading, or just sitting quietly— become surprisingly refreshing. You may notice conversations feel

A digital detox isn’t about restriction—it’s about reclaiming your time and energy, helping you feel more in control of your habits. Start with small, consistent steps. Your mind and body will thank you.

richer, your attention span lengthens, and you reconnect with parts of life that get overshadowed by screen time.

Quick, StressRelief Techniques

SStress can strike at any moment—during a busy workday, while commuting, or even in the middle of a conversation. Having simple, portable tools to bring your nervous system back into balance can make all the difference. These quick stress-relief techniques can be done anytime, anywhere, and require no equipment.

One of the most effective methods is controlled breathing. Try the 4-4-6 technique: inhale slowly for four counts, hold for another four, and exhale for six. This longer exhale signals the body to relax, lowering your heart rate and easing tension. Just one minute of this breathing pattern can help restore a sense of calm and clarity.

If you can step away momentarily, a brief change of environment works wonders. A walk to the nearest window, a few minutes outside, or even simply standing up and stretching resets your mind. Shoulder rolls, performed slowly and deliberately, release built-up tightness from long periods of sitting or stress-induced tension.

Small pauses throughout the day are more powerful than they seem. These micro-breaks interrupt the cycle of stress before it escalates, helping prevent burnout and improving focus. Think of them as tiny investments in your well-being— moments that ground you and allow you to return to tasks with renewed energy.

Whether you’re at your desk, in a meeting, or on the go, these quick techniques help you stay centered. With regular practice, they can become a reliable part of your self-care toolkit.

Morning Habits That Set a Positive Tone for the Day

How you start your morning often influences the rest of your day. Beginning your day with intention doesn’t require a lengthy routine; just a few simple habits can nurture both your mind and body. Start with gentle stretching to wake up your muscles, improve circulation, and release any tension from the day before. This small act signals to your body that it’s time to rise and move with purpose.

After stretching, drink a full glass of water. Your body naturally dehydrates overnight, and hydrating first thing in the morning helps boost your energy levels, supports digestion, and clears mental fog, giving you a refreshing start. Consider adding lemon or a pinch of salt to your water for extra benefits, such as improved taste and enhanced nutrient absorption.

Another valuable habit is to take a moment to write down three things you are grateful for. This quick practice shifts your mindset toward positivity and helps you focus on the good aspects of your life. Over time, it can help cultivate resilience, reduce stress, and enhance your overall emotional wellbeing. Gratitude can transform negative thoughts into uplifting reflections, nurturing a more positive outlook.

Even dedicating just five minutes to stillness—whether through deep breathing, meditation, or simply enjoying the quiet—can create a sense of calm that carries throughout your day. These small choices enable you to begin grounded, energized, and prepared to face whatever comes your way, leading to improved productivity and happiness.

SShovel Smart:

Winter Safety Tips You Shouldn’t Skip

Shoveling snow may seem like a simple winter chore, but recognizing the risks highlights the importance of following safety measures to prevent injuries. Cold weather, slippery surfaces, and physical strain can all increase the chances of injury. With a few precautions, however, you can protect your body and stay safe during winter clean-up.

One of the most critical steps is preparing your body before you start. Treat shoveling like a workout to help you feel capable and in control. Begin with light stretching to warm up your muscles, especially your back, shoulders, and legs. Wearing layered clothing helps you stay warm without overheating, while gloves and boots with proper traction reduce your chance of slipping.

When lifting snow, use proper technique to reduce strain. Bend at your knees — not your waist — and push snow when possible, rather than lifting it. If lifting is necessary, take small scoops and keep the shovel close to your body to prevent back injury. Remember to take frequent breaks, especially if you feel your breathing or heart rate increase significantly.

It’s also important to stay hydrated, even in cold temperatures. Your body loses fluids through exertion, and dehydration increases the risk of muscle strain. Keeping hydrated helps you feel cared for and prepared during your shoveling tasks.

Finally, know when to stop. If you experience chest discomfort, dizziness, or shortness of breath, stop shoveling immediately and seek medical attention. Being aware of these signs encourages you to listen to your body and prioritize your health.

Courage

OOne of my favorite quotes on courage is:

“The secret to happiness is freedom… And the secret to freedom is courage.”

—Thucydides

Happiness comes from freedom— freedom to make your own choices, to pursue what truly matters, and to live a life guided by purpose rather than fear. But freedom doesn’t simply arrive on its own. It requires courage. Courage to take risks, to step away from the comfort of the crowd, and to confront fear rather than avoid it. It’s the quiet but powerful decision to move forward even when uncertainty stands in the way.

Last month we talked about Bosco the Bear and his secret about keeping a positive attitude and “giving a smile to all you see…” This month we turn to Sheba the Wolf, who represents courage and “being as brave as you can be…”

A positive attitude is important, but without the courage to act—especially when things become difficult—we never get to discover how strong, capable, and resilient we truly are. Courage is what transforms a hopeful mindset into meaningful results.

I often wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t made that difficult phone call, tried that new idea, or stepped into the unknown with a business concept that nobody else understood at the time. Every major turning point in my life came from a moment when fear whispered “don’t,” and courage answered back with “try.”

The word courage comes from the Latin cuer, meaning “heart.” At its core, courage is the strength of spirit that allows us to face danger, challenge, or uncertainty instead of shrinking away from it. It does not mean the absence of fear. In fact, those who feel no fear at all can become reckless, careless, and even dangerous to themselves and others.

Real courage means knowing fear—feeling it fully—yet choosing to move forward anyway. It’s looking fear in the eyes and saying, “You may slow me down, but you will not stop me.”

Many years ago, I came across an acronym for F.E.A.R.: False Evidence Appearing Real

Most of the time the fear we feel isn’t based on reality—it’s based on the story we think will happen. And that inner voice, if left unchecked, can talk us out of opportunities, growth, and experiences that were meant to shape our lives for the better. Don’t let that voice choose fear over action.

When we look back on our lives, we rarely remember the moments when everything felt easy. We remember the moments when we were challenged— when we confronted fear, acted with courage, and discovered something of value within ourselves. These are the stories we pass down to our children and grandchildren so they understand that fear is natural, but allowing fear to dictate our actions is a choice.

And in the end, we begin to see the truth behind Thucydides’ words:

Happiness comes from the freedom to act—and that freedom is only possible when we find the courage to take the first step.

“It’s not because things are difficult that we do not dare, it is because we do not dare that things are difficult.”
