ARTHRITIS • PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY • FIBROMYALGIA • MIGRAINES

Our bodies have an amazing ability to heal and repair. But when stress, inflammation, poor sleep, toxins, or injuries pile up, that process breaks down.

That’s When Pain Shows Up:

• Stiffness when you get out of bed in the morning

• Pins and needles in your feet or numbness in your hands

• Losing balance, dropping things, or struggling to open a jar

• Whole-body aches that won’t let up

• Headaches so intense you can’t get out of bed or look at the light

Pain is your body’s signal that something deeper is broken. It is a cry for help.

Why Modern Medicine Falls Short

Emergency medicine saves lives— heart attacks, car accidents, surgeries. But when it comes to chronic, complex conditions, the “quick fix” model falls flat. Pills may mask pain, but they don’t address the deeper patterns that caused the problem.

A Different Approach

At Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine, we don’t just look at isolated symptoms. Your gut health, sleep, emotions, environment, and stress levels are all connected.

That’s why Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc developed the Vital Repair Method™, a personalized, integrative system that combines acupuncture, herbal medicine, modern quantum tools, exercise physiology, and her background in toxicology research.

This isn’t “any acupuncture.” It’s a step-by-step method designed to help your body do what it was meant to do: repair, recover, accelerate healing, and restore function

Don’t Put Off Your Health

If you are tired of suffering in pain and discomfort and are motivated to feel better, to feel your vibrant, youthful self again, give us a call today.

Do not put it off for tomorrow, or next month, or after the next holiday or trip. You wouldn’t delay care for your dog, your cat, or even your car. You are important enough to get help today. Call now and take the first step toward a life without pain.

“Since 2017, we have opened three new schools for our Essex County Schools of Technology students and a state -of-the-art Satellite Campus for Essex County College. New Book Uncovers the Data Behind Decades of Hit Songs

What makes a hit song stand the test of time? For Chris Dalla Riva, the answer lies in both the numbers and the stories behind them. A West Caldwell–based music industry professional and musician, Chris analyzes listener engagement for Audiomack, a streaming service popular across Africa and the Caribbean, while blending his love of melody and math to uncover the patterns that have shaped decades of popular music.

His debut book, “Uncharted Territory: What Numbers Tell Us about the Biggest Hit Songs and Ourselves,” out November 13th from Bloomsbury,

The Art of Dressing with Confidence:

How Personal Style Begins with Self-Knowledge

For West Orange style consultant Isabela Arêde, great fashion starts with self-knowledge— not trends. Also a fashion designer with more than a decade in the industry, she helps clients uncover their best colors, silhouettes, and styles through a process that feels more like selfdiscovery than shopping.

Isabela’s specialty is color analysis, a technique that identifies the tones that naturally enhance someone’s complexion, eyes, and features. But what truly sets her apart is her belief that style is deeply personal. She guides clients to understand not just what looks good on them, but why—helping them embrace their individuality rather than copy what’s on social media.

Whether she’s refining a makeup palette, building a wardrobe from what’s already in a closet, or creating mood boards to define personal style, Isabela’s mission is simple: helping people feel like the best version of themselves every day. turns chart data into a fascinating narrative about creativity and culture. The book, which he wrote as he spent years listening to every number one hit in history, will be available at major retailers, including Barnes & Noble and Walmart.

After years of pitching his idea, a TikTok post about the 1970s hit “Want Ads” finally opened the door to publication. Chris will celebrate with a launch event on November 14th at the Mile Square Theater in Hoboken.

Finding Hope and Healing Through Fiction

For North Caldwell author Cristina Guarneri, writing isn’t just storytelling; it’s soul work. With an MFA from Southern New Hampshire University and a deep belief in literature’s healing power, Cristina writes to inspire reflection, empathy, and escape. Her latest novel series, Lemonade for the Soul, I Forgive You, and Our Need for Faith, transports readers into using faith to help heal, to work through emotions, and to forgive. The three-book series shows readers how, by using our faith, we are able to find self-discovery and how it intertwines with one another. The books are richly layered to mirror her background as a licensed clinical pastoral counselor, weaving emotional insight into every page.

Cristina’s creative reach extends far beyond adult nonfiction. Her 12-book children’s series, Purple Ribbons and the Magic Tree, used gentle fantasy to help young readers embrace change as something beautiful and transformative. A second 12-part middle-grade series is in development, promising even more adventures ahead.

Through her stories, available on Amazon, Cristina invites readers to pause, imagine, and rediscover the grace of human connection.

Star-Studded Summer for Livingston Brothers

For most kids, meeting one celebrity would make their summer unforgettable. But for Livingston brothers Lance and Dustin Lowy, this summer brought two star encounters — each with its own story to tell.

In early July, while driving through Livingston, the boys’ dad, Jared, spotted film crews and realized that Adam Sandler was on location filming Don’t Say Good Luck. After a quick U-turn and some polite persistence from Lance, Sandler stepped out for a photo with Lance and four-year-old Dustin.

Then in late July, lightning struck again. Twelve-year-old Lance, now 13, got another front-row glimpse of Hollywood when he met John Cena, who was filming the upcoming Netflix movie Little Brother in Short Hills. Thanks to his dad’s connections, Lance was invited to a quiet residential set — a rare moment before word spread.

“It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done,” Lance said. “He was so nice and came out of his way to meet me.”

Two stars, two smiles, and one summer the Lowy brothers will never forget.

Empowering Young Voices

Through Public Speaking Making the Holidays Merry (and Manageable)

After years of success as a leader within Toastmasters organization, Tez Roro of West Orange is now inspiring the next generation of communicators through an ongoing youth public speaking and leadership program. Designed for middle and high school students, the initiative blends Toastmastersstyle training with real-world lessons in interpersonal communication and civic engagement.

The most recent program consisted of four sessions lasting about 1.5 hrs each, focusing on different aspects of interpersonal communication. Each session combined hands-on activities such as observing town council meetings, analyzing TEDx talks, press conferences of athletes and ultimately incorporating skills learned towards practicing and delivering speeches on topics they are passionate about.

The free program sparked tremendous community interest and Tez plans to offer additional workshops in the near future. She hopes to build a lasting opportunity for young people to master the art of interpersonal communication to maximize their personal and professional potential.

For Jenna Melillo, the holidays aren’t just a season; they’re her specialty. As Essex County’s personal holiday concierge, Jenna helps families turn festive chaos into calm. From now through the New Year, she is offering a helping hand with everything from thoughtful gift buying to the preparations and logistics for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa celebrations. And since the best celebrations start with great planning, Jenna says it’s never too early to get organized for the season ahead.

Clients start with a friendly phone call and a sit-down meeting where Jenna learns their needs, whether it’s gift purchasing, event planning, decorating, or even managing the big day itself. From there, she takes care of the details—purchasing gifts, arranging deliveries, setting up tablescapes, or ensuring every guest feels at home.

“I love helping people enjoy the season instead of stressing through it,” Jenna says. With warmth, organization, and a touch of magic, she helps clients focus on what matters most: making memories that shine long after the holidays end. Contact Jenna at 908-723-3821.

Books Beyond Limits Two Teenagers Redefine What Literacy Means

FFor Livingston High School junior Emma Escobar-Rivera and senior Darcy Bernstein, every great story begins with possibility, and theirs starts not on the pages of a book, but in the belief that stories should belong to everyone. The two teens co-founded Books Beyond Limits, a youth-led nonprofit dedicated to promoting literacy and creativity among children in underserved communities.

It all began as a summer book drive. Emma and Darcy started by collecting gently used children’s books from neighbors and friends through Facebook posts and community groups. Their goal was modest: gather a few hundred books to donate to schools in need. But within months, their project blossomed into a full-fledged literacy movement that has now collected more than 1,500 books and donated hundreds of English and Spanish titles to schools in Newark, including Park Elementary School.

From the start, Emma and Darcy wanted Books Beyond Limits to be more than a donation effort. “We both love reading and wanted other kids to experience how transformative books can be,” says Emma, whose parents are literature professors. “Even kids who have access to books aren’t always reading as much these days. We wanted to change that.”

Their mission quickly expanded to include ESL (English as a Second Language) programs for children of immigrants, bilingual read-alouds during Hispanic Heritage Month, and creative writing workshops that encourage kids to find their voices on paper. “I’ve always loved working with children,” says Darcy. “Creating programs that help them develop literacy and confidence felt like a natural next step.”

Emma and Allison Ha, director of community outreach, stepped into advocacy during Banned Books Week, presenting at the Maplewood Library on the dangers of censorship and the importance of intellectual freedom, showing that their passion for literacy extends beyond pages to principles.

Community engagement remains at the heart of their work. They continue to collect book donations through social media and participate in local events such as the Millburn Mamas and Minis Cozy Connections Family Fair, where they set up a table to share their mission. At their events, they invite children to take part in free activities like bookmark decorating and comic strip making. The teens also plan to expand their efforts by creating free little libraries to make books even more accessible in local neighborhoods.

For Emma and Darcy, Books Beyond Limits is not only about helping others, it’s about learning to lead, organize, and inspire. “Seeing a child’s face light up during a read-aloud reminds us why we started,” says Emma. “Books open doors. We just want to make sure everyone has the key.”

W Montclair Emergency Services for Hope (MESH) Serving with Heart, Dignity, and Purpose

When a storm swept through Montclair one evening, a man with nowhere to go stepped into the MESH soup kitchen, drenched and exhausted. “I just need a place to stay tonight,” he told President Ankur Jetley. Though the shelter wasn’t open that night, Ankur and his team spent nearly an hour calling hos-pitals and agencies until they found him somewhere safe to sleep. The next day, Ankur learned the man had been suffering from muscle breakdown after sleeping outside. “When he got back on his feet,” Ankur recalled, “he told us, ‘I want to come back and help you guys.’ That’s what this is all about, people helping people.”

For more than 20 years, MESH (Montclair Emergency Services for Hope) has been a refuge for those facing food insecurity and homelessness. Every week, its volunteers serve hot dinners six days a week to about 50 to 70 guests each night, operating out of a former restaurant space generously donated for use by the building owner. The “kindness closet” offers clothing, shoes, and toiletries, while a job board and housing resources help guests take steps toward independence.

MESH provides more than food and shelter. The organization assists guests with job preparation, inter-view clothing, and

housing placement. It also hosts Bible study gatherings and community discussions that foster connection, emotional support, and a sense of belonging.

During winter, MESH partners with St. Mark’s Church to provide overnight respite, offering up to 38 beds on Code Blue nights when temperatures drop below freezing. The organization also provides laundry services, one of the small but deeply human touches that restore comfort and dignity to guests who often go without.

Ankur, a pharmacist by profession, says his path to MESH began through meditation and manifestation. “Three years ago, I visualized running a soup kitchen with my family. I didn’t know how or when, but it came true,” he said. His daughter now volunteers regularly by his side.

Guests come from all walks of life, from local seniors to individuals traveling from other towns who feel safest at MESH’s welcoming tables. The nonprofit’s heartbeat lies in its volunteers, partnerships, and faith communities. Local restaurants and places of worship donate meals, and a single dinner service costs about $300 to provide.

“We serve over 850 unique guests every year. Some come for a meal, others for community. Everyone deserves to feel welcome,” said Ankur.

MESH Montclair continues to embody compassion in action, meeting people where they are, offering hope where it’s needed most, and proving that when kindness is the mission, every meal becomes a moment of grace.

Cozy Living: Fireplace & Chimney Safety

Few things feel cozier than a crackling fire on a cold winter night — but safety comes first. Annual inspections are essential to prevent chimney fires and carbon-monoxide hazards. A certified chimney sweep can remove creosote buildup, check the flue, and ensure proper ventilation.

If you use your fireplace often, consider installing a stainless-steel liner or glass door enclosure to increase efficiency. Gas or electric inserts can also modernize older hearths while reducing smoke and maintenance. Don’t overlook your home’s carbonmonoxide detectors — test them monthly and replace batteries twice a year.

Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and always dispose of ashes in a metal container outdoors. Use seasoned hardwoods for a cleaner, hotter burn that produces less creosote. Avoid burning paper, cardboard, or holiday wrapping, which can send embers into the chimney.

If your fireplace feels drafty when not in use, a removable chimney balloon can prevent heat loss. For a modern touch, many homeowners are installing vented gas logs or electric units that mimic real flames with no mess. A local hearth or chimney professional can guide you on safe, efficient upgrades so you can enjoy the glow all season long — without the worry.

Prevent Winter Water Damage

IIce, snow, and heavy rain can all take a toll on your home’s exterior — and your peace of mind. Before the next Nor’easter hits, schedule a roof and gutter inspection. Missing shingles, cracked flashing, and clogged gutters are leading causes of leaks and ice dams.

Make sure downspouts drain at least five feet from your foundation to prevent water from seeping into the basement. Inside, check your sump pump by pouring water into the pit — it should activate automatically. Consider a battery backup system in case of power outages.

Basement dehumidifiers and proper grading around the foundation further protect against moisture buildup. If you’ve had water issues in the past, have a professional assess your foundation and install a waterproof membrane or French drain system. Keeping attic vents clear also reduces condensation that can lead to mold growth.

Once the storm passes, take a careful walk around your property to look for roof damage, ice buildup, or downed tree limbs. Clear snow and debris from gutters, driveways, and basement stairwells to restore drainage. Inside, check ceilings, attic spaces, and window frames for any dampness or water stains — early detection prevents expensive damage later. If your basement or crawl space shows signs of seepage, contact a local waterproofing specialist right away. Quick action after heavy weather can make all the difference in keeping your home dry and structurally sound through Northern New Jersey’s unpredictable winter season.

Protect Your Home from Winter’s Chill

WWhen temperatures drop, even small drafts can drive up heating costs. Start by sealing gaps around windows and doors with weatherstripping or caulk—you’ll feel the difference immediately. Have your heating system professionally serviced to ensure it’s running efficiently, and don’t forget to replace filters regularly.

Attic insulation is another major factor in keeping heat where it belongs. If your attic floor joists are visible, you likely need more insulation. Adding insulation not only keeps your home warm but also prevents ice dams on the roof. Programmable or smart thermostats can also make a noticeable impact, letting you adjust settings remotely and reduce energy waste when you’re away.

Draw insulated curtains at night to retain warmth and open them during sunny afternoons for natural heat. In older homes, consider adding interior storm windows or upgrading to double-pane glass for year-round efficiency. Radiator reflectors and door sweeps are small, affordable fixes that can further conserve heat.

Finally, have a local HVAC professional test your home’s airflow and heating balance — uneven temperatures between rooms can often be corrected with simple duct adjustments or zoning. With a few preventative steps, you’ll enjoy a cozier, more comfortable winter while keeping energy bills under control.

Safe & Stylish Winter Entryways

YYour home’s entryway is the first thing guests see—and the first line of defense against snow and ice. This season, upgrade your walkway with slip-resistant pavers or textured stone that holds up under tough weather. Heated walkway mats or built-in radiant systems can make snow removal effortless and prevent dangerous ice buildup.

If you prefer traditional de-icing, avoid harsh rock salt that can corrode surfaces and harm plants. Instead, choose calcium chloride or pet-safe alternatives that melt ice effectively without damaging masonry. A hardscape or landscape professional can recommend durable materials that complement your home’s exterior style while improving traction and safety.

Add warmth and curb appeal with weather-resistant planters filled with evergreen branches, twigs, and winter berries. A durable, heavy-duty mat outside the front door—paired with an indoor boot tray—keeps slush and dirt under control. Don’t forget to check outdoor lighting: well-placed fixtures or solarpowered path lights make your walkway safer on dark winter evenings and highlight your home’s architectural charm.

For steps and porches, make sure railings are sturdy and securely fastened—icy conditions can make them essential for safety. A covered entryway or awning can also help protect guests from precipitation while extending the life of your front door and trim.

Finally, consider sealing stone or concrete surfaces before the first freeze to prevent cracking and spalling caused by repeated freeze-thaw cycles. With a few upgrades and some thoughtful design choices, you can create an entryway that’s not only functional but also inviting—a warm welcome for family, friends, and neighbors all winter long.

PAULA STARK

Echoing Home

GGrowing up in very rural West Boylston, Massachusetts the landscape was very different than what Montclair resident Paula Stark now sees on a regular basis. Always interested in Art, as a child she would find solace in a field, drawing while surrounded by the company of sheep and cows. And while she had an aunt in Boston who had studied with the renown painter Hans Hoffman, who sometimes was able to mentor her, there wasn’t much of an Art community in her rural world.

But as it sometimes does, the interest wins out, and Stark earned a BFA from the University of New Hampshire, and then an MFA from Parsons School of Design in New York City. Spending time in New York making Art, she was part of the Prince Street Gallery, and maintained a studio in TriBeCa. Eventually finding a home in Montclair in 2015, she took studio space at Manufacturers Village, 356 Glenwood Ave, East Orange, where many local artists maintain studio spaces.

In Storm Coming, a 20x24 painted paper collage made in 2023 we see a Martha’s Vineyard landscape. Stark says: “I’m intrigued by the light, especially before a storm”. And you see just that here. Her method is to paint sheets of paper, and then cut the shapes she needs from the

large page. She says that she sees landscapes as color blocks in relation to one another and cuts the color shapes almost like puzzle pieces. We are fascinated by how she uses these blocks of painted color paper to capture the colors of the island off the coast of Cape Cod.

Pink Sky, a 12x24 painted paper collage completed in 2024 is an image made from a photograph she made in Pennsylvania on one of her regular drives to North Carolina to visit family. Another rural scene, she says they: “click to a peace of mind, evocative of my childhood”. She’s drawn she says: “to a simple color palate”. We’re drawn to this beautiful work which reminds us of our own peaceful drives through a similar landscape.

Looking at Last Light, we see Stark with a bolder use of her color palate and love how the yellow barn stands out. This 14x11 painted paper collage from 2024 also captures the rural Pennsylvania countryside again harkening to the rural life in which Stark grew up. Also from a photograph made traveling to North Carolina it’s a very different light effect and time of day.

You can see more of her very original approach using hand-painted paper cut into different shapes, as well as her work in several other media on her website. Pay close attention to her paintings which stop us in our tracks, as we remember our own trips to the rural countryside.

Where Innovation Meets Family-Like Care

FFor nearly a decade, Montclair Rejuvenation Center (MRC) has been redefining aesthetics and wellness in New Jersey. MRC operates under the umbrella of The Rejuvenation Centers, which has offices in West Caldwell and Verona, NJ, as well as West Palm Beach, Florida. Over the years, MRC has become a trusted destination for those seeking to look and feel their best in a setting that feels more like home than a med spa.

Founder and owner Kelly DiStefano, MD, describes the philosophy simply: “At MRC, patients aren’t just clients. They become part of our family.” That sense of connection is at the heart of what makes MRC stand out.

Dana Vasnelis, MSN, APN
Dana Vasnelis, MSN, APN; Kelly Distefano, MD; Monica Adoptante, DNP, APN, FNP-C

Full Face Rejuvenation and Beyond

Unlike practices that focus on one-off treatments, MRC emphasizes full-face rejuvenation, assessing the whole picture, not just a single feature. Their menu is extensive, including Botox and fillers, PDO threads, microneedling, PRP hair restoration, photofacials, HydraFacial MD, Aquagold Fine Touch, CO2 laser treatment, and skin resurfacing. Regenerative medicine options, such as bio-stimulators that stimulate the body’s own collagen and elastin, are particularly popular. “It’s not just about filling lines; it’s about encouraging your body to participate in the rejuvenation process,” Dr. DiStefano explains.

Skin health isn’t the only focus. MRC also provides CoolSculpting and CoolTone for body contouring, IV vitamin therapies, weight loss injections, and nutritional support. Their NAD therapy, nicknamed “the fountain of youth,” is available in IV, injectable, and oral forms, promoting mental clarity, energy, and anti-aging benefits.

The First in New Jersey with Cutting-Edge Skin Tightening

MRC recently became the first medical spa in New Jersey to introduce the Lutronic XERF, a groundbreaking noninvasive skin-tightening device making waves in Korea and across social media. Safe for all skin types, it is designed to tighten skin without the need for numbing, needles, or downtime. Other practices will even be training on MRC’s device, which is a testament to the center’s leadership in innovation.

“This is the next level of skin tightening,” Dr. DiStefano says. “We’re excited to be the first in the state to offer it.”

Kelly Distefano, MD
Monica Adoptante, DNP, APN, FNP-C

Memberships, Loyalty, and Accessibility

MRC is equally committed to making treatments accessible. Their membership program includes facials, vitamin drips, and Botox, while the loyalty program offers cash back on every purchase, which is redeemable for any future service, with no restrictions or expiration. Platinum members can even enjoy a VIP “black card” experience.

Patients also benefit from flexible hours, a mobile app called “The Rejuvenation Centers,” and Cherry payment plans, which allow them to enjoy results now and pay over time.

It’s not just about filling lines; it’s about encouraging your body to participate in the rejuvenation process.

A Community of Care

With a team of practitioners including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and estheticians, MRC combines medical expertise with a warm, approachable atmosphere. “Our biggest focus is treating people like family,” Dr. DiStefano says. “We want everyone to feel comfortable, cared for, and confident.”

By blending state-of-the-art treatments with personalized care, Montclair Rejuvenation Center continues to set the standard for aesthetics and wellness, proving that the future of beauty is about more than results. It’s about relationships.

Arts Education Fueling Healthy Minds & Bodies

At Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts (SMAPA), students receive comprehensive, inclusive developmental training in dance and theater arts at every age and stage of life.

Yet beyond training alone, students learn lifelong habits and develop enthusiasm for movement and creativity in their everyday lives. These behaviors have real impact on long-term health outcomes in mental and physical wellbeing.

“The arts enable children, teens, adults, and seniors to find their own ‘unique voice’ inside and outside of the classroom,” says Sharron Miller, Founder & Artistic Director at SMAPA. “Exposure to the arts helps people fully realize their potential. It is up to us to nurture the possibilities within each and every student.”

SMAPA’s classes range from PreK to seniors, and everything in between. Teaching artists provide age- and skill-appropriate dance environments for healthier minds and bodies.

Since 2024, SMAPA has offered a free senior fitness program to residents ages 65 and older supported by grant funding from the Montclair Foundation. The program was first imagined as an engaging creative outlet that incorporates both movement and social-emotional support—making the experience good for one’s physical health as well as the mind and spirit.

Today, with an average class size of about a dozen seniors, this program has grown into three weekly classes, with the most recent addition of a more movement-oriented Zumba offering. SMAPA seniors enjoy receiving an enriching dance education experience in a fully-ADA compliant environment that strengthens their well-being and sense of community.

A Holistic and Progressive Philosophy

AT SERENITY MONTESSORI ACADEMY

In 2016, Sarah Colucci, a Montessori educator of 35 years, opened Serenity Montessori Academy in Verona with just one student and a big dream. Nine years later, the school has developed an excellent reputation in West Essex, filled to capacity with yearly waitlists.

SMA’s core belief aligns with the philosophy of early 20th-century educator Dr. Maria Montessori, who believed that “each child is born with an absorbent mind, with tremendous ability to learn through their environment without conscious effort.”

According to Sarah, “Serenity is a progressive Montessori program that celebrates individuality and creates confident learners through positivity, encouragement, and guidance in a prepared learning environment. They learn by “ doing,” and we follow their natural curiosity.”

Grace and courtesy lessons are the cornerstone to our daily interactions. This creates order, patience, and mutual respect among peers and teachers. Daily Montessori lessons coupled with tactile explorations of Montessori manipulative creates an incredible exploratory environment for thriving students at SMA. In addition, SMA has weekly visiting instructors in music, yoga, Italian, and dance to fully develop the whole child.

Serenity Montessori Academy accepts children from ages 2.56 years old. We are currently accepting applications for the 2026- 2027 school year. Please contact Sarah for a school tour.

A Century of Smiles: E Edgemont Dental’s Legacy of Care

FFor nearly a century, the building of 148 Central Avenue in Montclair has been home to something special, a place where generations of families have entrusted their smiles to expert hands. Dr. Michael Davidson has continued that legacy, blending advanced technology with genuine, rela-tionshipbased care.

With more than a decade of experience, Dr. Davidson brings both tech-nical expertise and a personal touch to every patient interaction. He holds the rare distinction of being a board-certified implant surgeon, a credential earned by only 0.5% a percent of general dentists nationwide. This advanced training allows him to provide comprehensive, high-quality care with exceptional precision and attention to detail, all within a welcoming neighborhood practice.

The team performs everything from cleanings, fillings, and root canals to wisdom teeth extractions, implants, TMJ treatments, and orthodontics. Edgemont Dental also stands out for its innovation. The office features an on-site dental laboratory and digital technology that make it possible to create crowns and dentures quickly, often the same day. Dr. Davidson personally designs each restoration to ensure comfort, quality, and a natural look.

From the treatment rooms, patients can look out over the park across the street, adding to the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that makes the office feel more like a home than a clinic.

For Dr. Davidson, the rewards of dentistry go far beyond procedures. “What I love most is seeing a patient’s confidence return,” he says. “When someone who’s been hiding their smile due to pain or embar-rassment finally sees their true smile again, that moment is everything.”

Surrounded by the charm of a building that has housed a dental office since 1924, Edgemont Dental continues to combine history, artistry, and compassion, one beautiful smile at a time.

Healing with Empathy: Dr. Rosie Strelnick’s Journey from Patient to Practitioner

HHave you ever wondered what makes some doctors so compassionate while others seem to lack empathy? In the case of Dr. Rosie Strelnick, DACM, LAc, of Rose Gold Wellness, it’s rooted in her own personal experiences with illness and the healing process.

Dr. Rosie, who struggled with dysautonomia in her teens and twenties, knows firsthand the challenges of dealing with a condition that disrupts involuntary body functions like heart rate, digestion, and blood pressure. She faced debilitating symptoms such as migraines, fainting, and gastroparesis, which required a feeding tube for three years. “I was young and should’ve been living a vibrant life,” she shares, but instead, she found herself hiding her feeding tube to attend prom.

Her healing journey began when her uncle took her to an acupuncturist. This was the turning point that offered her real relief, and it sparked her passion to pursue acupuncture herself.

“Acupuncture quite literally saved my life,” she says, and it led her to pursue a doctorate in the field. Now, Dr. Rosie refers to her practice as “The Last Resort with The Best Results,” a place where patients find hope after exhausting all other options.

Having personally experienced the frustration of being told that her condition was something she just had to “learn to live with,” Dr. Rosie brings a unique perspective to her patients. “I’ve

sat where my patients sit,” she says. “I’ve experienced their pain and suffering in a very real way.” This empathy drives her to help others overcome complicated neurological conditions, chronic pain, and autoimmune diseases that often leave other medical professionals puzzled.

NAVIGATING STRESS, ANXIETY, AND DEPRESSION

DURING

THE HOLIDAY SEASON

TThe holiday season, often seen as joyful, can ironically bring stress, anxiety, and depression for many. Recognizing these challenges is essential for managing them. Below are common triggers for these feelings.

Financial Pressure: The expectation to buy gifts, host parties, and travel can strain budgets, leading to guilt or anxiety.

Family Dynamics: Gatherings may heighten feelings of inadequacy, especially for those experiencing loneliness or complicated relationships.

Loss: For those grieving, holidays can evoke painful memories, making joy feel distant.

Busy Schedules: The rush of preparations can lead to stress and burnout.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Shorter days and less sunlight may exacerbate depressive symptoms.

Recognizing signs of stress is the first step to managing them. Set realistic expectations and prioritize quality time with loved ones. Budget wisely, considering handmade gifts or experiences. Practice self-care—make time for exercise, meditation, or quiet moments. Stay connected with supportive friends or family and limit social media use to reduce comparisons.

If feelings of anxiety or depression are overwhelming, consider reaching out to a mental health professional for support and coping strategies.

Gentle Caring Dentistry:

TRANSFORMING SMILES WITH COMPASSIONATE CARE

MMother and daughter Dr. Linda Stone and Dr. Vanna Stone share a dental practice at Gentle Caring Dentistry in Livingston.

Established by Dr. Linda, Gentle Caring Dentistry reflects her lifelong passion for providing quality dental work – from general to cosmetic dentistry – but with compassionate care.

Dr. Vanna joined her mother in practice after completing dental school. “I can never remember a time when I didn’t want to be a dentist. I always respected my mother’s gentle, caring demeanor. That’s how I wanted my dental practice.”

Gentle Caring Dentistry’s goal is to ensure maximum comfort for each patient in a relaxed setting. Further, they believe in educating their patients. “Educating our patients to understand the work we need to do and how we will do it reduces fear. The more knowledge patients have, the more interested they become in selfcare,” remarks Dr. Vanna.

Both dentists concur that the power of a beautiful smile is magical and can transform a person’s life. Dr. Linda recalls a director of a corporation who never smiled. After performing cosmetic work on the director’s misaligned teeth, Dr. Linda saw a changed patient with a beautiful smile and a pleasant personality.

Being passionate about your work and staying abreast of the latest industry developments is vital for a successful business. Says Dr. Linda, “Your work reflects you. Love what you do.”

You wake up some days and can’t get out of bed. Most evenings the pain is so intense you can’t even make dinner for your family. The exhaustion takes over and covers you like a heavy blanket. And of course depression hits: you can’t clean your house or play with your kids. You wonder if you’re any good to anybody like this. This is life with Fibromyalgia. And it was everyday life for Kelly C. of Verona, NJ.

“I would spend my days in bed as the pain traveled to different parts of my body. Often it would feel as though there were bugs scurrying under my skin, a sensation I wish on no one. Look, I knew my family needed me, and it was devastating to disappoint them day after day because I didn’t feel well,” shares Kelly.

Fibromyalgia is a complicated and chronic condition that disrupts the lives of over 4 million people in the U.S. Because of inconsistent and all-encompassing symptoms, fibromyalgia remains one of the most difficult conditions to diagnose and treat. Ultimately, it becomes a diagnosis of exclusion. Scans show nothing, tests come back inconclusive, and your questions don’t have answers so the doctors diagnose you with “fibro.”

A majority of practitioners will recommend anti-inflammatory diets, increasing your intake of magnesium, or prescribe prescription medications that come with a slew of uncomfortable side effects. All of these are band-aids, masking the symptoms rather than fixing them.

“All the doctors and specialists I met with couldn’t offer me a real solution. Some even had the audacity to tell me that my pain was all in my head. I had never felt so defeated and disrespected. I started doing my own research—reading articles that told me to go gluten-free and eliminate toxins even in my face wash. I did all of it and didn’t find any reliet However, I was having such a hard time focusing and concentrating. I’m not entirely confident in anything I did.”

Kelly’s story is not uncommon amongst those suffering from fibromyalgia. The pain is inconsistent and unrelenting, causing debilitating chronic fatigue and brain fog, something the afflicted not-so affectionately refer to as ‘fibro fog.’ There are a few suggested causes for fibromyalgia including genetics, infections, and physical trauma, but so much about this disease is still so unknown that it has been dubbed the ‘invisible illness.’ Until now!

“I saw something on TV featuring Dr. Rosie and her work with Fibromyalgia. At this point, I was willing to try anything. And thank God I did. Going to Rose Gold Wellness has allowed me to go from surviving to truly thriving!” Kelly exclaims. “Since starting treatment, I went from not being able to cook dinner for my family to cooking for my daughter’s entire graduation party and playing slip-n-slide with two dozen teenagers.

I was even able to go visit my mother for the first time in two years! Before I was unable to make the ride because it put me in too much pain. l even hugged her!”

And why do Dr. Rosie and the staff at Rose Gold have a 90% success rate in treating Fibromyalgia?

Dr. Rosie shares all. “In addition to acupuncture, which has been used to treat pain for thousands of years, we use ATP Resonance Bio Therapy®. It’s a cutting edge technology that targets specific tissues in the body. It then reprograms them for optimal performance. We have protocols for a myriad of chronic conditions from neuropathy to tendonitis. We can even target the pain and inflammation caused by fibromyalgia.”

It’s in combining her decades of experience, the time-tested science of acupuncture, and modern medical solutions like ATP Resonance Bio Therapy® that Rose Gold Wellness of Montclair are giving much needed relief to those suffering with fibromyalgia and other complicated, chronic conditions. Because Dr. Rosie designs very personalized treatment programs for each of her patients, an initial consultation is required in order to receive treatment. The Future of Eye Care: How New Technology Is Changing the Way We Protect Your Vision

MModern eye exams go far beyond reading letters on a chart. Thanks to advanced technology, we can now detect—and even prevent— serious eye and systemic diseases earlier than ever before. At our practice, we’ve invested in state-of-the-art diagnostic tools that give us a detailed view inside your eyes, protecting not just your vision but your overall health.

A Wider View with ZEISS CLARUS Widefield Imaging

Your retina reveals key insights into your health. The ZEISS CLARUS widefield camera captures up to 200 degrees of the retina in high-definition, true color—allowing us to identify early signs of diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal tears before symptoms appear.

Sharper Detail with Spectralis OCT

The Spectralis OCT works like an “MRI for the eye,” using light waves to create detailed 3D images of the retina and optic nerve. This helps us detect glaucoma, macular degeneration, and retinal swelling at their earliest stages—when treatment is most effective.

Relief for Dry Eye: Lumenis OptiLight IPL

For patients struggling with burning, gritty eyes, the Lumenis OptiLight IPL treatment uses gentle light pulses to reduce inflammation and restore healthy tear production, providing lasting comfort.

Catching Diabetes Earlier with RETeval ERG

This noninvasive device measures how your retina responds to light, revealing early diabetic changes before traditional exams do.

By combining these innovations, we can see more, detect more, and act sooner—keeping your eyes, and your health, in focus for years to come.

SSome say that your attitude toward any situation is the most powerful asset you can ever possess. A positive and resilient attitude shapes not only how others respond to you, but also how you grow and learn along the way.

Last month, we talked about Service and the message from Lawrence T. Owl in Little Billy’s Search for the Magic Tree. As part two of this journey through the five secrets, Little Billy meets Bosco the Bear, whose message is simple yet profound: “Give a smile to all you see, and you shall find the Magic Tree.”

Think about that for a moment. Isn’t it amazing how something as small as a smile can change the energy around you? The next time you take a walk, try an experiment: smile at the people who pass you by. Most will smile right back. That simple exchange—one small moment of kindness—can brighten someone’s day, including your own. The truth is, the world often reflects the attitude we bring to it.

Attitude

“A great attitude does much more than turn on the lights in our worlds; it seems to magically connect us to all sorts of serendipitous opportunities that were somehow absent before the change.”

What Is Attitude?

Attitude is defined as the mental position you take regarding a fact or a state. But in real life, it’s much more than that.

• It’s not what you look at that counts, but how you look at it.

• It’s not what you hear, but how you hear it.

• It’s not what you think, but how you think it.

Your attitude colors every moment of your day—whether you realize it or not. From it flows your joy and gratitude for life’s blessings, and from it can also come your frustration and disappointment when things don’t go as planned. Attitude is the lens through which you experience everything.

There are some circumstances in life we can change; many, we cannot. When faced with the things we cannot change, we have two choices: we can live in disappointment, bitterness, and anger—or we can look within, find that

resilient spark that refuses to be broken, and rise again with renewed strength and perspective.

A positive attitude is not about forcing a smile or pretending everything is fine. It’s about responding to life with acceptance, courage, and hope. It’s about recognizing that while we can’t control every situation, we can always control how we show up for it.

When you choose to see things through a positive lens, you not only transform your own world—you help others see the light, too.

“I am not afraid of storms, for I’m learning how to sail my ship.”
— Louisa May Alcott
