Holding On

A few weeks ago, our toddler took his first tentative steps into the real world with his first short stint at daycare. He’s generally a confident, social wee chap and so it was little surprise – if a little insulting! – how well he coped with us ‘abandoning’ him for a few hours for his first few days with barely so much as a glance back as I tried to swallow the lump of guilt from my throat. But things changed the second week – perhaps the novelty had worn off and he realised that this daycare thing was for real! – as he’d cling to me or my wife for dear life, forcing us to forcibly unpeel arms and legs from around necks and waists and feeling as though we were committing the most unforgivable of crimes. My mind immediately leapt two decades into the future as I wondered how we’ll cope if he heads off to university or, as did his parents, to the other side of the world.

I’d never been in any great rush to start a family, and when my wife (then girlfriend) and I got our loving, loyal dog a few years ago that bond felt more than ample to sate any occasional parental urges (dog owners will know exactly what I mean, everyone else just hasn’t

spent enough time in canine company). But then, our beautiful, beautiful baby boy arrived and soon booted down bolted doors to emotions that I didn’t even know I had, profoundly redefining not only what it is to love, but what it is to worry and to suffer heartache – mostly imagined, so far!

From day one, your job as a dog dad is to protect your pet by teaching them to never stray too far from the safety of your side, while as a parent your job is to protect your child by preparing them to leave the safety of your side to head out into the unknown and thrive.

So, for now, I’ll just continue to cram as much time and effort into making memories that he most certainly won’t remember, but I will absolutely never forget, because, before I know it, he may very well be peeling my arms from around his neck before he heads off on some wonderful adventure into that unknown.

Enjoy the issue.

A Beacon of Hope

MILLY NOLAN ELLIE WEAR PARISGEORGIA
Ellie Stone, the driving force behind MCNZ Group, is not only a visionary entrepreneur but also an incredibly inspiring figure. She is a woman on a mission to reshape lives and communities in New Zealand through her unwavering compassion, determination, and innovative employment solutions.

Twenty-seven years ago, Ellie arrived in New Zealand from Iran in search of a new beginning. Having trained as a biologist, she later pursued studies in HR, gaining a master’s degree in HR from AUT from where she is now also keen to do a PhD about the negative impacts social media can have when searching for work. Despite her academic achievements, Ellie found herself disheartened by roles where profit overshadowed ethics.

This realisation ignited a fervent desire within her to be a force for positive change. Recognising that relying on others wasn’t enough, Ellie took matters into her own hands by founding MCNZ Group to provide employment opportunities for overlooked individuals. Her vision for the company transcends mere profit; it's about challenging societal norms and building bridges for those seeking a second chance. Despite founding the company in 2021, it wasn't until September last year that Ellie made the pivotal decision to leave her current job and fully dedicate herself to the business.

“I’m in my 50s but I feel reborn,” says Ellie. “I’ve finally found the courage to believe in myself and pursue my passion. It’s akin to standing on the edge of a cliff, arms outstretched, breathing in the fresh air of newfound freedom. The prospect of enriching the lives of people who need help is what propels me forward.”

Ellie is deeply committed to supporting New Zealanders in need: “I have lived here half my life and this is where I will die,” she asserts. “My kids are growing up here, so I want to support our own people.” With this in mind, MCNZ Group acts as a lifeline for those facing various challenges like former prisoners, recovering addicts and refugees. “These individuals have never had appropriate role models or the ability to escape the life that they were born into,” says Ellie. “I’m here to help them believe in themselves so that they can shape their own identity at long last.”

Ellie tirelessly recruits, trains, and places individuals in suitable roles in construction or skilled labour spanning roofing, tiling, painting, construction cleaning, traffic control and beyond. “At MCNZ Group, we're rewriting the rules by offering a second chance," Ellie explains passionately. “I believe everyone deserves a chance to rebuild their lives and contribute to society.

“A fair and just society is not one that continues to punish a person indefinitely, either intentionally through its actions or inadvertently through its biased opinions. Instead of looking down on these individuals, as a society, we should strive to understand the numerous challenges they confront."

7 April 2024

Success stories already emerging from MCNZ Group are a testament to Ellie's vision and unwavering commitment. Beyond employment, MCNZ Group also nurtures newfound skills, confidence and personal development, empowering individuals to become invaluable assets in their workplaces.

“The barriers our people face are often complex and unrecognised," Ellie explains. "Sometimes it's something small, like not having enough credit on their phone to check a bus timetable or use maps to find a job site. Recently, we assisted a deportee facing court charges for past transgressions. With no money, housing, or job, he had no clear means to demonstrate his contribution to society and was at risk of jail. We advocated for him in court, provided employment, and partnered with others to secure accommodation for him and his pregnant girlfriend. Just last week, he was promoted and is now able to support his growing family. Such moments fill me with pride for what we do and the impact we can make."

Ellie's ambitions for MCNZ Group are expansive. She envisions spearheading initiatives in social housing, aiding individuals with low credit ratings to secure their first home. To achieve this, she intends to collaborate with stakeholders, philanthropists, and property developers to bring projects rooted in socioeconomic models to fruition, benefitting all parties involved. Additionally, she plans to create opportunities for disabled individuals and single parents through remote work options, such as setting up a call centre.

Ellie has also founded the charity Ora Hou / New Life which facilitates the rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals transitioning from prison into society. It takes a comprehensive holistic approach, addressing education, employment, housing, and healthcare.

To change just one life for the better is an amazing achievement, but my ultimate goal is to change the lives of many.

While Ellie acknowledges the risks involved in employing individuals with criminal records, she emphasises the importance of a carefully planned approach. Working closely with the Department of Corrections and probation officers, Ellie ensures that individuals are placed in low-risk environments, providing them an opportunity to prove themselves and reintegrate into society. “I have become a friend to all my employees,” says Ellie. “So many people in New Zealand have never been given a chance. They have never had the privilege of having a good upbringing or the education to know any better. They are labelled as ‘bad’ from the beginning. By showing them care, respect and trust, they are more likely to achieve their goals – to prove to society and themselves that they’re worthy.”

Ellie’s work is her life's purpose. "I'm always available, day or night," she admits. "But that's okay because I'm finally aligned with where I want to be. I admire the impact that individuals like David Letele make on people's lives in low-socioeconomic areas across New Zealand. He is my inspiration. To change just one life for the better is an amazing achievement, but my ultimate goal is to change the lives of many. At MCNZ Group we aren’t just a company, we are a movement that strives every day for positive change. "

In a world that often overlooks the marginalised, Ellie stands as a beacon of hope, proving that with the right opportunities, support, and understanding, everyone can rewrite their narrative and contribute meaningfully to society.

Dream Home Builders

Nicola and Graham Kock are no strangers to the construction industry, having previously owned businesses in South Africa focusing on designing and delivering various commercial and residential construction projects.

Since moving to Auckland in 2014, the husband-and-wife duo have continued to pursue their passion in the industry with a focus on residential developments. Graham has continued to

add to his 25 years of experience in the construction industry having managed large, multimillion- dollar construction projects across the North Island during the past decade.

They’re thrilled to put their expertise into building new homes as the new owners of Stonewood Homes Auckland East and South franchise, which includes areas such as Remuera, Eastern Bays, Howick, Clevedon, Manukau, and Beachlands.

Graham says the time is now right to step into their own and lead a homebuilding franchise with a brand that’s well established in the area.

“We started our careers with home renovations and have ended up in new builds, and it’s actually become a family journey for us,” Nicola says. “Our son Tyler, 18, has just finished college and will soon be studying construction management. He loves this industry as much as we do.”

Their expertise also stretches beyond building dream homes, with Nicola’s vast experience in interior decor also benefiting the finished product.

“We love creating beautiful spaces and can’t imagine a better job than helping to create residential environments and homes for the community,” she says.

Graham hopes they’ll fill the void of the general shortage of homes in the region.

“A lot of people have reached out with enquiries, whether it’s knocking down a home and rebuilding, investment properties or a new family home, so we see a lot of opportunity,” he says.

The couple are no strangers to Auckland’s south and east and live within the area.

“We’ve considered a Stonewood Homes franchise before, but there were no opportunities available at the time in the area we live. We feel it’s vital to be part of the community in which we operate and know the areas inside and out to provide that local knowledge” Nicola says.

“These areas are diverse and have something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a slightly more urban or suburban environment that's close to the city or a lifestyle property a bit further out, they’re the ideal locations,” she adds.

“There are many established suburbs with well-known, popular schools and supporting infrastructure, and there are also many new residential developments – all created with a strong community focus and feel with new schools and other convenient amenities. Whether you’re an investor buyer or a forever home buyer, there’s truly something for everyone.”

Nicola and Graham’s brand-new show home in Park Green Estate, Papakura is now open to view.

Luxury Retirement

Nestled in the heart of Auckland's coveted Parnell neighbourhood, The Foundation stands as a beacon of refined living for those seeking the epitome of later-life luxury.

While the words luxury aren’t usually synonymous with a retirement village, The Foundation is an exception. Situated on the historic grounds of Blind Low Vision NZ in Parnell, the multi-stage development is more akin to an upmarket hotel.

Designed to offer seniors a world-class haven, The Foundation is not merely about bricks and mortar, it's about providing a lifestyle where tranquillity and vibrancy coexist seamlessly. Promising a prime location, meticulous attention to detail, and service that exceeds expectations, The Foundation’s mantra is ‘retirement without compromise’.

The Foundation came about as a result of a partnership between Generus Living Group, a pioneer in New Zealand's premium retirement village market, and Foundation Properties, the property subsidiary of Blind Low Vision NZ. “We refer to The Foundation as 'the best retirement address in New Zealand' for good reason," states Graham Wilkinson, director of Generus Living Group. "The Parnell precinct's rich historical tapestry and its prime location make it exceptionally unique."

In crafting the development, a key priority was to pay homage to the area's storied past and its landmark, heritagelisted buildings, Jubilee Building and Pearson House. Inspired by the opulent residences of Chelsea Barracks in London’s Belgravia, The Foundation's architecture weaves in design elements from the Victorian redevelopment, including the use of European Jura limestone and the integration of deep facade relief. Designed by renowned architects, Peddlethorp, The Foundation’s design is a seamless blend of modernity and tradition, in harmony with the classical stonemasonry of the surrounding heritage buildings.

The Nathan Residences, the inaugural stage of the village that welcomed its first residents last year, features 46 luxury retirement apartments across four levels with commercial space at the ground

thefoundationvillage.co.nz Up Front 10

level. Prices for the apartments range from $1.5 million up to $4 million. The adjacent Abbott Residences, currently under construction and expected to be completed mid-2026, will be a five-level building comprising 60 apartments, including a rooftop terrace with a covered sky pavilion and courtyard garden, providing breathtaking views of the Auckland War Memorial Museum and the harbour. More than 250 residents will reside at The Foundation on completion of the entire development in 2028.

The one-, two-, and three-bedroom living spaces at The Foundation boast classic design with contemporary finishes, offering a canvas for personal expression. With large, fullheight windows, double glazing, high ceilings, integrated airconditioning, and generously proportioned private balconies, residents can revel in a bright and airy environment, while chef's kitchens, sculleries, full laundry rooms, and storage areas showcase the commitment to ensuring a clutter-free, comfortable lifestyle. State-of-the-art security has also been a priority in the design with secure underground parking and keyless entry.

Following on from the theme of blending history and modernity, the interiors of The Foundation – designed by Stewart Harris of Macintosh Harris – can be described as ‘timeless elegance’. The application of De Gournay wallpaper panels in lift lobbies and corridors tells stories of the Pacific, Americas, Asia, and Africa, creating a stunning visual journey throughout the levels.

Ensuing luxury is at the forefront of the residents’ daily life, every facet of comfort is accounted for with around-the-clock resident assistance, a concierge service, in-apartment room service, a private chef for catering, and a choice of a self-drive EV or chauffeured vehicle service.

An integral part of the development is the restoration and refurbishment of the Category 1 Heritage neo-Georgian Pearson House, on Titoki Street facing the Auckland Domain. Upon completion later this year, Pearson House will offer a plethora of facilities, including a stylish eatery, billiard lounge, boutique cinema, reading room and art studio. For now, the

dedicated Club Lounge at the Nathan Residences provides an elegant setting for socialising, entertaining, and enjoying complimentary beverages. Whether residents seek the solace of a good book in a sunlit corner or the joy of shared laughter at one of the many organised social occasions, The Foundation recognises that later years are a balance between moments of quiet reflection and vibrant social engagement.

The Foundation’s third and final apartment building is Pearson Residences, adjacent to Pearson House. This future stage will also include additional village amenities, including a wellness centre with hydrotherapy pool and hair salon, formal restaurant, and bar, as well as two levels of aged care incorporating hospital and memory support.

Understanding that care needs evolve, The Foundation seamlessly integrates boutique dedicated care services as well as a range of health services and wellbeing programmes.

The Foundation’s Wellness Clinic, facilitated by a registered nurse, offers wellbeing support including general checkups such as blood pressure, temperature, respiratory rate and pulse rate monitoring as well as post-surgery rehabilitation support.

More than just a residence, The Foundation is a lifestyle, a celebration of history and modernity, and a commitment to providing seniors with the finest in later-life luxury.

In Short

Verve ’ s monthly round up of what’s new, interesting, and happening… in a paragraph!

OK Times

Known as the Korean Wave – or Hallyu – South Korean culture has truly hit the mainstream by way of K-pop, K-dramas, and K-beauty, and with a little help from the internet. Unlike traditional western beauty products that often arrive in a sterile shade of white, Korean beauty products embrace innovative formulations that emphasise skincare over makeup while incorporating advanced technology and high-quality ingredients such as snail mucin and ginseng. What’s more, the wide range of customisable options – think sheet masks through to essences – caters to all skin types and are usually highly affordable. This holistic approach to beauty has made Korean products a staple in skincare routines worldwide, popular with both women and men – and its influence just continues to flourish. A report by Straits Research estimated the industry to be worth more than US$18 billion by 2030, growing at a rate of 9.2% each year.

Black Death

Few sweet treats are as divisive as black liquorice – you either love it or you hate it – and those who fall into the love-it camp might have a lot more to worry about than sugar rushes, tooth decay or an expanding waistline. While liquorice root contains an array of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties that has been used in traditional medicine for millennia, it also contains a compound called glycyrrhizic acid which, though 50 times sweeter than sugar, is relatively harmless if consumed in small amounts. However, when consumed in large quantities it can lead to a potentially deadly condition called pseudohyperaldosteronism, with symptoms including high blood pressure that continue for up to months after consumption. The World Health Organization recommends no more than100mg per day of glycyrrhizic acid for adults, however, the glycyrrhizic acid content can vary by as much as 30 times between confectionery manufactures, but on average works out at around 65g of liquorice.

Lose the Lag

Jet lag is caused by the disruption of our circadian rhythm – our body’s internal regulatory clock – that occurs when crossing time zones. The more zones we pass, the worse the lag as our clocks are misaligned with the local time resulting in disrupted and wrongly timed sleep, and even sometimes health issues. It takes on average of around one day to recover from jet lag for each time zone crossed, and though there is no prevention or cure, there are ways to alleviate it. These include gradually adjusting your sleep schedule leading up to the trip so that it’s more aligned with your destination; staying hydrated and avoiding alcohol and caffeine; staying active during and after the flight; and strategic napping. Some people also find melatonin supplements taken a few days before until a few days into the trip can help, and of course, there are various apps, such as Timeshifter, to help better manage the transition across time zones.

Tuning Out Tinnitus

Tinnitus – the perception of noise or ringing in the ears when no external sound is present – can be temporary or chronic. Causes include age-related hearing loss; earwax blockage; medical conditions; and stress, with its effects ranging from mildly annoying to totally disabling to the point of greatly impacting quality of life. More than 200,000 Kiwis suffer from tinnitus, and though there is no known cure, treatments include various therapies and hearing aids. But a new app, MindEar, might be the key to the most effective treatment yet. Developed by an Auckland University-led research team, the app employs cognitive behavioural therapy to “help you understand your relationship with tinnitus, provide the tools to manage it, and empower you to live your life with long-lasting freedom”. Dr Fabrice Bardy, the first author of the study, who also has tinnitus, hopes to “empower people to regain control” before the negative thought cycles associated with the affliction take root.

Droning On

Last year Domino's Pizza announced the trial of drone delivery service in Rāhui Pōkeka/Huntly in partnership with tech company SkyDrop having already made history by conducting the world’s first pizza delivery by drone from Domino’s Whangaparaoa in Auckland in 2016. So, from a world-first drone delivery to the world’s longest: Norwegian startup Aviant recently introduced a delivery service to the luxurious ski resort town of Lillehammer. The drones’ operating radius of 17km is around six times further than that of traditional drones, while their ability to operate in the region’s tough winter weather also sets them apart. Now the town’s 4,000 residents can order up to 1.5kg of goods such as medicines, groceries, and meals, with the average delivery time standing at 24 minutes. “This represents a significant moment for autonomous drone delivery in Europe,” says Lars Erik Fagernæs, Aviant CEO and co-founder. Convenience aside, the drones’ eco credentials are pretty impressive too, emitting 95% less CO2 than an electric car.

Bird Buddies

Based in Green Bay, Auckland, BirdCare Aotearoa is an avian hospital that cares for around 6,000 wild birds each year. This most worthwhile of world-class endeavours – the largest of its kind in New Zealand – reaches beyond Greater Auckland to Waikato and Northland and is run and funded solely by way of the kindness of volunteers and donations. Rescued feathered friends include the injured and the orphaned from the familiar tūī and fantails to the less commonly seen kākā and albatross. Administration manager Kim Frakes, who started out as a volunteer at the DoC-approved hospital, says: “Current volunteering opportunities include caring for birds and cleaning in the hospital, maintenance and building at the site, and assisting with fundraising, which can be performed remotely.” She adds that, “It’s an incredibly special feeling, holding a precious wild bird gently yet securely, while a hospital manager gives medication or treatment.” Find out how you can help at birdcareaotearoa.org.nz

History Revisited in Melbourne

museumsvictoria.com.au

In 1880 a visitor to the Melbourne International Exhibition described the view of the newly constructed Exhibition Building: “At one’s feet lies the city, with its well-planned and equally well-executed streets, its commendable buildings, its domes, its churches and its towers. Then the suburbs, green almost as the country beyond and the waters of Port Phillip.”

Over 140 years later, visitors to the recently re-opened Royal Exhibition Building Dome Promenade can still look out across the Carlton Gardens, with its shady tree-lined avenues and perfect parterre garden beds towards Melbourne CBD –although skyscrapers have now replaced church towers as the city’s highest landmarks.

“While the view from the south of the dome has changed dramatically, looking out towards the east and north, visitors today still see the sprawling landscape of suburban Melbourne. The panorama is not too dissimilar to that seen by the 4,000 people who climbed to the dome on Melbourne Cup Day in 1880,” says Dr Michelle Stevenson, Head History & Technology at Museums Victoria.

16

Designed by prominent Melbourne architect Joseph Reed, the World Heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building has survived as the only ‘Palace of Industry’ from the 19thcentury international exhibition movement and is still used as an event and exhibition venue to this day. The international exhibitions movement fostered a global exchange of products and ideas, with the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition featuring over 32,000 artistic, manufactured, and natural products from 33 nations and attracting 1.3 million visits over seven months – more than quadruple Melbourne’s population at the time.

“For the state of Victoria, hosting an international exhibition was an opportunity to showcase the wealth, opulence, excitement, energy and spirit of post-gold rush Melbourne for colonial and international visitors and exhibitors,” notes Dr Stevenson. “It provided an opportunity for the colony to make its mark on the world stage alongside global cities such as London and Paris.”

Reed’s design for the Exhibition Building drew on an eclectic array of architectural influences. While the overall design used the Rundbogenstil (round-arch) style, the building’s soaring 67-metre dome, which was the highest landmark in Melbourne when completed, drew directly on Brunelleschi's octagonal Duomo in Florence. The four fanlights over the north, south, east, and west portals are reminiscent of Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace in London, built for the first International Exhibition in 1851. The layout of the building itself was also symbolic, with its form evoking a religious building – a physical temple to industry.

Other examples of structures created for international exhibitions around the world include the Eiffel Tower, which

was constructed as an exhibit for the 1899 Paris International Exhibition; Petit Palais; Grand Palais; Chicago Museum of Science and Industry; Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum; and St Louis Museum. However, what makes Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building unique is the authenticity of its architectural form, including its garden setting, and its continuity of use.

In 1901, the Royal Exhibition Building hosted the opening of Australia’s Federal Parliament as it was the largest exhibition and event venue in the country at that time. The interior of the building was repainted for the momentous occasion –this is the decorative scheme that remains today. Designed by John Ross Anderson, the brown, red and green colours suited the solemn occasion, while the artwork around the dome is rich in symbolism relating to the Federation of Australia. Latin mottos, Roman gods and allegorical figures are all used to convey the ideals and hopes of the new Australian nation.

Since that time, events of all kinds have found a home in the building and gardens. Fashion and cultural festivals, flower and garden shows, culinary celebrations, musical performances, and car shows are examples of the building’s usage in recent times. The building has also been used for a wide variety of civic purposes including as an air force base, migrant reception centre, influenza hospital, Olympic fencing venue, and Covid vaccination hub.

Stories of the building’s rich heritage are further detailed in an exhibition that is part of the recently opened Royal Exhibition Building Dome Promenade experience, a regular tour of the building’s upper and lower promenade deck, staircase and basement gallery which has garnered international interest.

Museums Victoria is the largest museum organisation in the southern hemisphere and proud custodians of the Royal Exhibition Building. Book your tour at museumsvictoria.com.au

Neuendorf House

ARCHITECTS

An iconic geometric haven for stillness, clarity and light.

The house is like a stage, a theatre for light. When you visit, you are the audience for the dramatic play of light and shadow across mass and form.
Right : Beyond the house there is a dramatic long wall that cuts through the landscape. You walk along this wall as you approach the house, leading you up with a procession of gentle, wide stairs. The house itself looms in front of you, a bold, solid wall, with a clean sliced opening running from top to bottom through which you enter the house and interior courtyard.
21 April 2024
Left page: The form of the house is strictly orthogonal, an almost perfect cube. All lines are straight, proportions carefully measured. The only curves are found in the master bathroom, enclosing the open shower, and the curved stairwell that climbs the four levels from the underground basement to the open rooftop.

Outside and inside, travertine marble plays a starring role, forming long, bold benches to sit on and a strong dining table and half-wall for the kitchen. Its porous, pitted surface adds texture and depth to otherwise very smooth and simple interior spaces. To the left of the kitchen you enter a large pantry/work space with large fridges and shelves that keep the clutter out of the social space.

Above: Right : The living room is a quiet, enclosed space, perfect for reading a book or watching a movie projected directly onto the white walls.

Inspired Innovative Interiors

Entrepreneur and interior designer Laura Heynike founded Pocketspace Interiors nearly a decade ago to help Kiwis make the most of their properties. Verve finds out more.

We love the name Pocketspace. What inspired it, and the company?

As a design graduate I realised there was no one really servicing clients with tricky spaces. Travels to New York and Paris inspired me to hone in on the craft of maximising space as they do it so well over there. The name was formed one night when I was going out with friends and didn't want to take a handbag; instead, I put everything into my friend's pocket, much to his disgust. I replied that pockets just fit so much in!

You describe yourselves as ‘space maximalists’. Can you expand on this?

Essentially, I had to come up with a term that describes our craftsmanship that would instantly resonate with clients that need to maximise their interior space. We have large corporate clients through to car showrooms, marine clientele and highend villa renovations. Our common denominator that links our client base is how we adapt style and function which we tailor to each project.

What are some of the challenges you encounter when transforming small spaces?

Most common is an office, house or apartment footprint that needs to expand to fit in another room. Alot of the time we can re-space plan without having to enlarge the space. Storage space is also a common problem.

Can you outline some typical design problems you encounter and resolve when tackling both residential and commercial projects?

Although different spaces they share the same problem – to use space better! For offices it's space-planning to fit in another meeting room or additional team, so we consider acoustics,

culture or privacy concerns. For residential, clients focus on quality and problem solving. It's about really analysing pain points in their home and making sure we address that before anything else.

You also work with marine interiors! Tell us about that?

Pocketspace Marine is a perfect fit for us. We love being lifestyle designers. It’s more than about maximising every square inch of a boat, it's about adding functional details like technology, bespoke stitching, and study nooks.

In terms of process, what can people expect when working with Pocketspace?

Our communication is transparent, and our processes world class. The process is very similar to most design projects, however it's our internal processes such as automated task management, our collaborative workflow, and buddy-checking system that really makes us stand out from other customer experiences.

Can you share your top interior design tip with our readers?

Most of the time our clients are on the right track, but they struggle to have the confidence or time to pull it all together. It's important to back your instincts. Identify what success looks like in your space: get that right and everything else will fall into place a lot easier.

Ready to maximise your space? Head to pocketspace.co.nz and let the experts handle it.

offering a seamless blend of style and functionality tailored to your unique taste where the price is a pleasant surprise considering the luxurious quality.”

Schüller is the parent brand, a company that produces around 170,000 kitchens per year that are distributed globally. Next125 is their most premium offering, and one that the team at Ultimate Living thinks will be fully embraced by locals looking to elevate their kitchen to the next level of European excellence.

“It’s a truly collaborative design process,” explains Katrin, “whereby we help you create a kitchen that’s completely bespoke to you. Endless East Coast Options

The expert team at Landmark Homes North Shore & Rodney have made building stunning new homes impossibly easy. We spoke with Jarrod Angove to learn more.

What is Landmark Homes North Shore & Rodney all about?

We see home-building as an ‘alongside’ process where we partner with clients as expert guides. The dream is to stand at the kitchen bench of a new build to celebrate the fruits of our combined labours!

Tell us about your team. Who are you and how can you help people seeking their dream home?

Our experience and commitment to collaboration really sets us apart. We take care of every aspect of a build including finance advice, consenting, interior design, construction, project management, Code of Compliance, and post-handover support.

How do your designs meet the needs of the North Shore and Rodney?

In the 15-plus years we’ve been in business, we’ve never built the same home twice. This keeps it interesting for us, and means we are nimble enough to meet every need.

People moving to the North Shore and Rodney areas are usually seeking a little peace from city life. How do your homes fit that requirement?

Life is generally busy – we are busy people living in a time-poor age. The ability to sit in a window-seat with the sun on our backs or relax under a louvre roof can be the difference between a

house and a home. Asking clients about how they relax enables us to create the haven they are looking for.

What does your ready-to-build design service encompass?

Landmark Homes New Zealand has been in business for over 45 years, and in that time, we’ve established ourselves as an industry leader with our extensive range of Ready-to-Build Plans which offer utmost flexibility. All are customisable – our designers work alongside clients to finetune their layouts in to create that dream home.

My dream is to own a house and land package. Do you offer these?

At any one time we are likely to have several House and Land Packages available via our Landmark Homes website, or on a variety of other platforms. Each option is a response to a particular piece of land and price-point but can also be customised. House and Land Packages offer the certainty of a fixed price-point for the whole project, making obtaining finance much easier. We can also provide finance alternatives to the major banks.

What if I’m looking for something a little more customised?

Design and build are our specialty and greatest passions! We partner with a handful of highly experienced and creative architects, and curiosity and the

collaborative nature of the design brief process enables us to arrive at distinctly custom solutions.

I already have a site I want to develop. Can you still help?

This is the way it quite often happens! We are specialists in remove and rebuilds, subdivisions, and even major renovations and additions.

Welcome to Residium

Auckland’s premier destination for interior design and architectural product discovery.

Residium – Building + Design Hub

Far beyond a conventional showroom, Residium is a fresh and invigorated epicentre for interior design and architectural inspiration.

For the past 27 years, the Auckland Home Ideas Centre has been a familiar name. Recently, however, it has emerged with a fresh identity and renewed vigour. Following an extensive year-long renovation, the Parnell showroom has reopened its doors renamed as Residium – a vibrant nexus where architects, designers, and homeowners can explore the latest trends and innovations in the design and building industry.

Residium's launch signifies more than a change of name; it marks a fundamental shift in approach – a forward-thinking adaptation to the changing demands of the design and construction sectors. The focus has transitioned to welcoming a design-conscious audience, eager to find, touch, feel, see, and experience an inspiring range of products and materials.

"As online resources are often the starting point for planning a construction or renovation project, we saw the need to redefine our position within the industry," says director Hugh McKellar. "Our exhibitors, brands, and visitors all expressed a strong desire for a venue where they could physically interact with the products, refine their choices, and be introduced to new concepts, confirm the details of what they've seen online, and engage directly with the brands."

Embracing this new direction, Residium offers a tactile experience, allowing visitors – whether homeowners or trade professionals – to explore curated showrooms featuring premium products from Australasia’s leading suppliers in architecture, interior, and outdoor design. Hugh notes, "Many visitors were uncertain about the details of products they saw online – whether they were available in our market, or what their size, colour, or texture was like in reality. It’s crucial to have the opportunity to validate these aspects through touch and feel before making a decision. This immersive, physical interaction with products is something that online platforms cannot replicate."

With exhibitors covering all key design categories – kitchen, bathroom, hardware, cladding, hard materials, lighting, landscape and more – Residium provides everything needed to embark on a building project. The showcased architectural products aren't the cash and carry kind; they are either available through made-to-order services, fabricators, or online ordering. Takehome samples and swatches, digital ordering options, and expert guidance from brand representatives enhances the exploration process.

Residium's novel approach has also seen a shift away from the exclusivity

often associated with showrooms. Residium’s doors swing open for everyone – from first-time renovators to seasoned architects, creating an inclusive atmosphere where needs are met regardless of one's experience in the world of design and renovation. The addition of free parking and good coffee on offer is a bonus!

“Residium is not just a place for making selections; it's a platform for discussing projects, exploring new products, and where creativity, collaboration, and shared inspiration can thrive,” says Hugh.

The commitment to education and collaboration is further demonstrated in Residium’s 100-seat conference centre and 12-seat boardroom, hosting events, workshops, and talks for industry professionals and the broader community, while also championing their exhibitors.

Residium is open 7 days a week.

Preparing your home for resale?

A fresh coat of paint can make a significant difference in attracting potential buyers.

Opting for a light, neutral palette is a smart choice as it creates a versatile canvas that appeals to a wide range of tastes and allows buyers to envision their own furnishings within the space.

Resene offers a selection of light, neutral shades that will enhance the appeal of your home's interiors. Some Resene favourites include:

Resene Alabaster : a classic off-white hue with subtle warmth, perfect for creating a bright and inviting atmosphere.

Resene Sea Fog : a soft, pale grey with hints of blue undertones, evoking a sense of tranquillity and sophistication.

Resene Rice Cake: a delicate, creamy shade that adds warmth and depth to any room while maintaining a timeless elegance.

Resene Half Tea : a gentle beige, with a touch of grey, providing a versatile backdrop that complements various decor styles.

Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream: a pale, muted yellow that brings a soft, sunny glow to interiors, creating a welcoming ambiance.

By choosing from these Resene favourites, or similar light and neutral tones, you’ll create a visually appealing environment that maximises the perceived space and potential of each room. Plus, a fresh coat of paint helps to conceal those imperfections, giving your home that well-maintained appearance, increasing its marketability and appeal to prospective buyers.

For more home sprucing or renovating ideas, visit your local Resene ColorShop, or take a look at their comprehensive website or find them showcased at Residium in Parnell.

A Fresh Start

Verve caught up with renovation consultant Dave Georgetti for some well-considered insights into how to best renovate your home.

Top three tips to consider prior to launching into a home improvement?

1. Do you have the time and skills to manage a renovation project? A typical renovation project wastes around 30% of the budget through poor planning, so self-managing can be a false economy.

2. W hen briefing a designer, make a wish-list for what you want to achieve from the renovation, rather than what you want to change. Your designer may propose more suitable or more

cost-effective options you hadn’t considered.

3. I f your budget falls short of your wishlist, you may need to split the project into stages. A good plan will ensure future work doesn’t go back on the money you’ll have already spent.

Tell us more about the services you offer and your point of difference. Your Refresh Renovation Specialist deals with the designers, council and subtrades. The end-to-end service includes overseeing all aspects of the build including quality control and council inspections. Our fixed price quote is our main point of difference, while our unique five-step process minimises pre-build costs while establishing the feasibility of the project.

Which rooms in a home do you most like to renovate and why?

The kitchen, the heart of the home, which we try to integrate with dining, family and outdoor spaces. The kitchen has so many options we can give the client something unique.

The benefits of a good renovation? A good renovation protects and enhances the value of your asset: it can transform a home and surrounds into somewhere filled with light, good flow and beautiful spaces.

Elegance Materialised

Transforming your windows

with

Lahood Window

Furnishings and The Design Chaser, Michelle Halford .

For over 40 years, Lahood® has been synonymous with transformative window solutions. To better understand the factors behind this enduring success, Lahood recently surveyed over 1,000 of their customers to uncover their priorities when choosing curtains and blinds, as well as their experiences with Lahood.

The results were illuminating. Customers uniformly cited the Lahood team and their expertise in bringing conceptual ideas to life as the key factor. Customers praised the "quality, professionalism, and efficiency" of the team from the initial consultation to the final installation and their ability to transform their windows in a stress-free manner:

“Having an architecturally built house had some challenges, but Lahood’s ideas were valuable and the whole process was professional, friendly and stress-free”

Jaci, Auckland

In response to the feedback, Lahood has launched a stunning new website ( lahood.co.nz) and adopted the tagline "Elegance Materialised" to capture the journey customers embark upon with Lahood to achieve beautiful windows. This new positioning has been visually brought to life in a striking manner through a collaboration with The Design Chaser, Michelle Halford, in a recent photoshoot. Michelle Halford also shared some key considerations when choosing window furnishings:

Functionality : what is the room being used for? Consider blackout for bedrooms, durable fabrics for high-traffic areas, and moisture resistance for bathrooms.

Aesthetics : what is the overall desired look and feel? Do you prefer sleek roller blinds or natural linen sheers? Ensure the fabric complements your existing decor.

Finishing : think about finishes at the start. Double pleats create a full, luxurious feel but require space when pulled back. Flush or recessed tracks provide a discreet look but need to be considered on building/renovating plans.

Lahood's team will guide customers through these and many more considerations, to ensure the perfect window solution. Experience Elegance Materialised in your home now. Planning for the Unexpected

WORDS

Renovations are different from new builds.

Renovations cost more than new builds because with renovations you pay for what must be demolished and removed from site, then you pay for the new build and then you pay to marry up the old and the new.

Unlike with new builds, it's not until you remove the Gib board that find issues such as rot, so a generous contingency to cover the unexpected is a must.

Kitchens and bathrooms cost more than lounges and bedrooms because they have the extra cost of plumbing, drainage, cabinetry, appliances, tiling, and bathroom ware, but they are usually the spaces that need a refresh and make the house stunning.

Renovations also have a habit of enjoying scope creep. While the painter is here, we might as well paint the hall or bedrooms, while the electrician is here, lets change all the light fittings, and on it goes. So be strong and don't let it creep.

Be honest from the beginning. Accept you need to paint the whole house, not just the new. When you undertake a kitchen

renovation it won't be just cabinetry but the whole open plan area, the lounge, and the dining room.

A new renovation can make the rest of the house look old and tired and while you can shut doors on bedrooms, maybe the hall needs a refresh otherwise the open plan renovation will be a shock, and not a good one.

Best to decide on what is important to you, what are the must haves, and stick to them. Prioritise.

Wonderwall

How does Nu-Wall compare with other cladding products?

Nu-Wall uses 85% recycled aluminium and made right here in New Zealand, supporting NZ businesses. Nu-Wall keeps our carbon footprint to a minimum. Because it’s lightweight and durable, and won’t rot, delaminate, or crack, Nu-Wall is the ideal cladding material. Also, the low maintenance requirements compared with other products in terms of painting and repairs and so forth means it is the most cost-effective option out there.

How long will Nu-Wall last, and what guarantees do you offer?

There is a Nu-Wall 100-year guarantee that the aluminium substrate will remain weather tight. The surface coatings have separate manufacturer warranties depending on the coating grade and against integrity and colour loss up to 25 years.

In what lengths is Nu-Wall available?

All Nu-Wall profiles can be supplied up to 6.5m long, with some profiles being able to be supplied longer—up to 8.3m in some cases. For many projects, profiles are supplied in custom lengths, calculated to minimise unusable waste.

Is Nu-Wall suitable for marine or harsh environments?

Absolutely. With a choice of baked powder coat or anodised finishes in several grades, Nu-Wall suits the toughest conditions. Remember that NuWall won’t rot, crack, or delaminate.

Is Nu-Wall resistant to impact damage?

Yes, with a buttressed wall thickness of 1.5mm, Nu-Wall is resistant to all but a determined attack. Rugby balls and the like will have no effect. Cricket balls could dent the surfaces.

What colours are available?

Nu-Wall comes in approximately 90 standard powder coat finishes, but that’s

just the start. Just about any custom colour is available to match your taste or interior design.

What thermal properties does Nu-Wall have?

Like most cladding, Nu-Wall relies on the insulation in the walls to maintain the internal temperature. Corrugated iron roofs are the same, insulation is essential to create a comfortable temperature gradient.

Does Nu-Wall get hot in the sun?

Yes, it can. Like any metal surface the temperature can get hot, especially in summer. The insulation stops the heat entering the home just as the heat from a corrugated iron roof is insulated from inside the house.

Are there other applications for Nu-Wall?

Yes, Nu-Wall is used for soffits, counter fronts and cabinets, doors and screens, and suspended ceilings. Also, sectional garage doors are offered in Nu-Wall by most garage door manufacturers in New Zealand.

Is Nu-Wall noisy in the rain?

No, the rain doesn’t have enough impact on a vertical surface to cause any noticeable noise.

If damage is done to my Nu-Wall cladding, such as a car backing into it, how is it repaired?

This can be answered in two ways. For

a slight dent or scratch the repair can be done in a similar way to automotive panel beating – touch up paints are available and body fillers can be used on the cladding if necessary. Where serious damage has occurred and the panel is ripped, the wall can be disassembled from the soffit down and the damaged panels replaced. Nu-Wall is assembled using screws, not nails, so all undamaged products can be re-used without replacement.

Masterful

“Sometimes I think I'm part of this world today,” mused the multidisciplinary artistic genius that was Isamu Noguchi. “Sometimes I feel that that maybe I belong in history or in prehistory, or that there is no such thing as time.”

Some might argue time to be almost irrelevant to such a visionary who guaranteed his own immortality thanks to his influence across art, design, and architecture. Even if you don’t recognise the name, you will likely be familiar with the work.

It was work profoundly influenced by his upbringing. Born in Los Angeles in 1904, there was a certain inevitability to a life of creativity for Noguchi, his Japanese father being a poet, and his American mother, a writer. His multicultural heritage would greatly inform his artistic creations, too, lauded for his ability to seamlessly blend Eastern and Western aesthetics and transcend cultural boundaries. At the time of his death, in 1988, he had studios in both the US and Japan.

“The essence of sculpture is for me the perception of space, the continuum of our existence.”

Noguchi began taking sculpture classes at New York’s Leonardo da Vinci Art School while studying medicine at Columbia in the early 1920s. But he soon gave up dreams of becoming a doctor to pursue art fulltime and was granted a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 1927 which he used to move to Paris where he studied under the tutelage of Constantin Brancusi. In the biography Listening to Stone: The Art and Life of Isamu Noguchi, author Hayden Herrera recounts how painter Andrée Ruellen recalled that Noguchi “seemed to be attached to everything about Brancusi” even going so far as to wearing Romanian wooden shoes “like Brancusi did”: “And he talked over and over about how Brancusi lived for nothing but work. I can’t say that in our circle Isamu attracted special attention for his talent. But I thought that he had a wonderful sense of beauty.”

GARDEN MUSEUM,

It was during this period that Noguchi began exploring the relationship between space, material, and human interaction, laying the groundwork for his distinctive artistic style.

“I felt that the old-fashioned way of doing things, for instance, with stone, with your own hands, left you a greater freedom.”

After a year in Europe, the artist returned to the US, where he had his first abstract sculpture solo exhibition at the Eugene Schoen Gallery in New York, before travelling again; first to Europe, and then to Asia where he studied calligraphy in China and Japanese pottery making. Noguchi arrived back in New York in the early 1930s with both his artistic and social horizons well and truly broadened.

“Art is too much in the hands of the so-called tastemakers, dealers, critics… I like to think that art may be something that everybody should be able to enjoy and have access to.”

Noguchi's legacy extends well beyond art thanks in part to collaborations with renowned architects and designers like

R. Buckminster Fuller and Geroge Fuller. Noguchi helped redefine the concept of modern living by dreaming up iconic pieces such as the Noguchi Coffee Table (see page 53) which comprises a freeform glass top above a base of two curved wooden pieces – a timeless masterpiece that continues to adorn homes and galleries worldwide and which the artist considered his best furniture design.

“The harshness of electricity is thus transformed through the magic of paper back to the light of our origin – the sun – so that its warmth may continue to fill our rooms at night.”

Equally as iconic are Noguchi’s Akari Light Sculptures, which he began developing in the early 1950s. Named after the Japanese word for ‘light’, the designs – washi paper stretched around bamboo rods and wooden frames – represent illumination and the manifestation of its fragility and physical lightness. They were developed, in part, he said so that everyone may afford the opportunity to own one of his designs: “They are as much an expression of myself as anything else I do.”

56

Noguchi’s unwavering commitment to social justice and cultural exchange led him to create groundbreaking playgrounds and public artworks such as the Sunken Garden at Chase Manhattan Plaza and the Red Cube in New York City and the tranquil Unesco Garden in Paris, which serve as poignant reflections of his belief in art's power to unite and inspire.

“In a way, culture exists only to give meaning to the space you see… What I’m really interested in is the meaning or the image that the sculpture projects, rather than the sculpture itself you see…”

Isamu Noguchi's enduring legacy lies not only in the beauty of his creations, but also in the profound sense of connection they evoke. His work, a testament to his unwavering dedication to exploring the intersection of art, culture, and humanity, continues to inspire generations, encouraging contemplation of the infinite possibilities of art as an expression of beauty and its power to unite. In November 2020, a section of a street

near New York’s Noguchi Museum was officially named Isamu Noguchi Way, in tribute to that nearby former studio that the artist transformed into a museum –one of many sites around the world that displays his genius in perpetuity.

Mother’s Day

I’m really enjoying the friendships I’ve made with my daughter’s friends’ mums.

Genevieve Black Builder and mother to Claude, six years old.

What’s the most unexpected perk of motherhood that you never saw coming?

My mum-crew – I’m really enjoying the friendships I’ve made with my daughter’s friends’ mums. We support and lift each other up, and have some great laughs as we watch our kids grow. It’s beautiful. Also, getting to eat my daughter’s leftovers from her uneaten dinner is a bonus!

What stands out as the most unforgettable moment you’ve experienced as a mother so far?

Buying my daughter a big trampoline. We didn’t have a lot of money growing up and I always wanted a massive tramp. To be able get that for her and to see the shock and happiness on her face made my heart melt.

And the most challenging?

Juggling it all. Work, home, social and

self. Working towards building a future for my family while being present and spending quality time with Claude isn’t always easy.

What values do you hope your child will carry into adulthood?

A strong sense of self with kindness and honesty in everything she does.

What is the best piece of advice that your own mother gave you that you’ll be passing on?

Don’t sweat the small stuff.

How will you be celebrating Mother’s Day this year?

My ex-partner, Sarah, is the star of Mother’s Day and I get Father’s Day. This year we will take a leisurely drive with Claude and the dogs to a beach with oysters and finish the day with a decadent pasta and cheesecake for dessert.

Mother's Day 60

Inger-Lisa Hurst

Certified Iyengar yoga instructor and owner of Maraetai Yoga Studio. Mother to 10-year-old Arlo, 8-eight-year-old Florence, and Viggo, who’s five.

What does being a mum mean to you?

I remember when my partner Gareth and I started talking about children and whether we wanted to have any, and he said that there’s no point to it all without kids. And I have to agree. Being a mum is everything. While I find being a mum a lot harder than I could have anticipated, I do find that everything I do, I do either for my children or to inspire my children.

Do you have a favourite mantra that helps you power through the more challenging days?

Haha, I do! I remind myself that this too will pass.

How do you practise self-care with three kids?

Self-care is a big one for me at the moment. With all three kids now at school I have to continuously remind myself to not try to fill every child-free moment rushing around ticking jobs off the list. I try to finish any work I’m doing an hour before school pickup and take the dog for a walk. We’re lucky here in Maraetai as we have stunning bush walks and coastal walks right on our doorstep. I find an hour out in the fresh air can really change my perspective in time for the afternoon madness.

What's one small moment with your kids that never fails to warm your heart?

The morning cuddles in bed are so special and cosy. That gorgeous moment when everyone is still a little bit sleepy and extra smoochy. I love it.

What is the best advice your mother has ever given you? You have to fill your own bucket before you can try to fill anybody else’s.

How will you be spending Mother's Day this year?

If I have my way I would love some morning cuddles with the kids, followed by hot coffee, an outdoor adventure of some kind, and of course, yoga!

61 April 2024
From a young age, I involved the kids, emphasising that supporting each other's dreams can become a family commitment.

Hannah Fang

Professional event violinist and Mother to Elsa, 14 years old and Zac, 8 years old.

What role did your mother play in your upbringing and how has it shaped you as a mum?

My mother's influence laid the foundation for my upbringing, and while I cherish her selfless dedication, I aspire to blend both worlds. I aim to be a professional violinist performer while nurturing a strong, connected bond with my children, combining the best of both roles in my journey as a mother.

How did your mother influence your career as a violinist?

My mum played a significant role in my early stage experiences as a violinist. She crafted my first stage wear when I performed publicly at six, and continued making beautiful outfits for me as a child. While my passion for the violin was influenced by my dad, my mum's touch made performing even more enjoyable with that special stage wear.

What’s the thing you love the most about being a mother?

The best part of being a mum is seeing my kids having a blast playing together, achieving their goals, and sharing moments like traveling or cooking together. It's those simple joys that make it all worthwhile.

How do you balance the responsibilities of motherhood with your career as a performer?

Juggling motherhood and performing is possible with my amazing partner's support. We often bring the kids to shows, creating a family team greenroom. Managing time wisely, especially after school, is crucial. From a young age, I involved the kids, emphasising that supporting each other's dreams can become a family commitment.

Can you share a piece of advice or wisdom concerning motherhood that you live by?

Prioritise being true to yourself and allow your children to witness your vulnerabilities, your passions, and your genuine approach to being an authentic and cool mom, rather than conforming to societal expectations of what makes a good mum.

What’s your favourite way to spend time with your children?

Going on holiday together, without doubt. We explore different countries, enjoy beaches, and different foods, and immerse ourselves in new cultures. Whether snorkelling or soaring high in a helicopter to see the mountains, these moments I never forget.

Mother's Day 62
We try to go with the flow and adapt so that we fit into his life, and he fits into ours.

Clothing designer, DJ, and mother to Zoot, 9 years old.

Tell us about Zoot’s name?

We started calling him Zoot as a ‘tummy name’ before he was born, after the jazz saxophonist Zoot Sims, and it stuck! Incidentally the saxophone player in the Muppets was called Zoot after Zoot Sims! My husband, Nathan Haines, wanted a musician name and Zoot seemed cute and very original. It wasn’t until we went back to London not long after Zoot was born and needed a passport for him that we had to make the decision whether to make the name final or not. Instantly, and now after nine years, he really is Zoot. Everyone loves it – especially kids! It so suits him and his personality.

What do you love most about being a mother?

Everything. Obviously, there are moments that can be hard, and it’s a constant juggle of time, energy, stress, food, worry, everybody’s schedules, panic, and self-doubt. You seem to always be in a constant rush to fit in all of the things that don’t involve being a parent while also being their full-time PA. But the joy on every level other than that is all worth it for me. I have never loved anything as much.

How do you balance being a mum with maintaining your own personal style, hobbies, and work?

We involve our son in everything. It’s the only way. I don’t have a nanny so he just comes to everything – maybe not to the late night gigs but everything else. We try to go with the flow and adapt so that we fit into his life, and he fits into ours.

What fashion advice have you learned from your own mother, and what will you be passing on to Zoot?

It was hard not to learn good taste when my parents oozed it from their pores. They both understood that fashion is a language to be shared and that high quality fabrics and cut is important, along with feeling good in what you wear. My mother has an innate sense of wanting to be individual. She also has charisma and a charming personality that is cheeky and fun. Zoot has that also – even at nine, he’s got style, swagger and an immense amount of personality which is the meaning of true style for anyone.

When it comes to breakfast in bed on Mother's Day, what's on your dream menu?

Cuddles with my fam – and maybe a massage with strawberries and champagne, followed by not having to do anything!

What piece of motherly advice do you wish to share with Zoot the most?

Be yourself and tell your own story whether that is through music, art, clothing, whatever you choose. The world wants to see originality and if you do that in a cool way and enjoy the ride and the people along the way you’ll be rewarded with a rich and full life.

Want to add an extra decade to your days? Then follow these steps…

1. Eat a balanced diet

A diet rich in various nutrients is essential for longevity. Incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.

2. Exercise regularly

Engaging in regular physical activity bolsters cardiovascular health, regulates blood sugar levels, and will even enhance mood due to the release of endorphins.

3. Get adequate sleep

Quality sleep allows the brain to clear out toxins and supports the repair of cells. Poor sleep, on the other hand, has been implicated in a host of diseases.

4. Engage in good stress management

Mindfulness and meditation can reduce the production of stress hormones such as cortisol, lowering blood pressure.

5. Foster healthy social connections

Cultivating friendships and community ties can provide emotional support, reduce stress, and foster a sense of belonging and purpose.

6. Embrace lifelong learning

Reading, learning a new language or playing a musical instrument stimulate neural connections and can protect against dementia and memory loss.

7. Use preventive healthcare

Screenings and check-ups can catch problems before they escalate, with

vaccinations, cancer checks, blood pressure and cholesterol levels all vital.

8. Don’t smoke and limit alcohol

Smoking cessation significantly reduces the risk of numerous cancers and cardiovascular diseases. And if alcohol is part of your lifestyle, moderation is key.

9. Maintain a healthy body weight

Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise can significantly reduce risks.

10. Adopt a positive outlook

Optimists are less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease and can even have stronger immune responses.

Pigmentation Challenges?

Pigmentation issues are a common concern, affecting our confidence and leaving us searching for solutions. Understanding the causes and starting effective treatment strategies can help us embrace our skin and its health.

Pigmentation, characterised by dark spots or uneven patches on the skin, can stem from various factors. Sun exposure is a major contributor, triggering an increase in melanin production and leading to the formation of sunspots and freckles. Hormonal fluctuations, such as those experienced during pregnancy or due to contraceptives, can also contribute to melasma, a form of hyperpigmentation. Additionally, the natural ageing process can slow down skin cell turnover, making pigmentation more noticeable.

Prevention is key in managing pigmentation. Sun protection is paramount, so make sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily (non-negotiable). When it comes to treatment, a skincare routine enriched with potent ingredients can make a significant difference. Consistency is crucial in skincare. While quick fixes may promise instant results, sustainable improvements require dedication. Establishing a routine with targeted treatments and maintaining diligent sun protection are essential for achieving lasting results. Your professional skincare therapist can provide you with a comprehensive guide of what ingredients will provide the best results and how they should be used. With a number of new products launching, you need professional advice to ensure that you will be obtaining the best results.

Professional treatments can provide additional support in managing pigmentation. But you need to ensure that you’re consulting once again with qualified skincare professionals. They will help you navigate the world of advanced treatments which are designed to both manage and treat your concerns. Determining the most suitable treatment plan for your specific needs requires in-depth consultation and also access to the latest treatments and products. At Louise Gray we bring together both.

In addition to skincare, wellness practices contribute to skin health from within. A balanced diet rich in antioxidants,

adequate hydration, and stress management all play a role in maintaining overall skin health.

In conclusion, managing pigmentation requires a comprehensive approach to skincare. Prioritising sun protection, incorporating targeted treatments, and nurturing holistic wellbeing is a complete 360 approach that we are able to help with here at Louise Gray Skin Care.

With summer fading, now is the perfect time to start your Pigmentation Management Journey. With a number of new products, along with comprehensive treatment solutions, we can customise your treatment to ensure that you are obtaining and maintaining the results you need. SKIN LASER INJECTABLES

Second Skin

Verve

sits down with Tuesday Skin founder Zoë Wilde to learn about how

she’s shaking up the beauty industry from within.

Tell us about Tuesday Skin?

I'm a new-age injector with a badass attitude, smashing old-school stigmas around cosmetic enhancements and advocating self-love, self-expression, and confidence! I genuinely believe someone's appearance influences how they feel about themselves, and you're kidding yourself if you don't think that. We have clinics in Mangonui and Kerikeri, and we provide cosmetic injectables and advanced skin therapies, and stock Dermaviduals, a corneotherapeutic skincare range with high-strength actives.

What sets you apart in the beauty industry?

Our brand! Beauty brands are usually calm and pretty, and we are the opposite of that. Tuesday Skin is full of life: we encourage bad behaviour, we're in your face, and we’re loud! The inspiration behind our brand is to really celebrate and empower women with a confident ‘zero f***s’ attitude, to be who they are, and to do what they love unapologetically. Our mantra is "helping baddies feel their best", so if you don't leave our studio, scroll through our page, or engage with us feeling anything less than your absolute best, then we're doing something wrong.

What are the current trends in the beauty industry?

As an injector, filler has its place, but overfilling is out – and has been for a while. Instead, people are seeking biostimulators such as RADIESSE® to encourage their body’s own natural collagen and elastin.

Something that's been coming up time and time again is people coming to me

for Botox and filler to look younger, when what they really need is to improve the quality of their skin, especially here in NZ, where sun damage is so prevalent.

This is where the Sciton technology comes in, specifically their Broadband light (BBL) and Moxi laser which literally reverses ageing. Treating the pigment and reds within the skin is leaving clients looking clearer, brighter and healthier. It's a treatment people didn't know that they needed, revolutionarily changing the gene expression with complete bioremodelling of the skin cells.

When I opened my skin clinic in Northland, my goal was to raise the calibre of what's offered and offer nothing but the best of the best, and that's where BBL and Moxi enter the scene; we're lucky to be the first clinic north of Auckland to have this worldclass treatment available. My clients are walking out looking years younger, and it just keeps getting better.

Smooth & Confident

Finesse Face and Body Clinic is proud to be the first truSculpt iD provider in New Zealand, as part of an exclusive partnership with Cutera.

How does truSculpt iD work?

truSculpt iD uses a unique form of monopolar radio frequency energy that penetrates evenly and deeply and is able to treat deep into the entire fat pad - from skin to muscle. Once the applicators have been placed on target fatty areas, heat is dispersed evenly, causing irreparable damage to the fat cell walls which the body metabolises and removes permanently over the next 12 weeks. Real-time temperature control and monitoring sensors ensure a constant and therapeutic temperature is maintained for 10 minutes ensuring maximum fat disruption, resulting in 24% fat reduction with every treatment. Patient comfort is ensured through the highly engineered skin adhesives and temperature control which keeps the skin cooler than the underlying fat.

How is truSculpt iD treatment performed? The initial consultation is performed to assess and discuss your concerns and desired aesthetic goals, then a tailored and customised treatment plan will be created. A total

of six handpieces can be used per 15-minute treatment, and multiple areas can be treated on the same day. Once medical consent is completed skin adhesives are attached to the skin overlying the fat pocket followed by the handsfree applicators. The treatment area is wrapped in a cummerbund to minimise movement of handpieces during treatment. After 15 minutes of warmth is distributed into the tissue, the adhesives, handpieces and cummerbund are removed and the patient can return to normal activities.

How do I know if I am a candidate?

truSculpt iD is the latest in non-invasive fat removal procedures in minimising treatment time, maximising results and comfort whilst reducing downtime (there is none!). truSculpt iD is a great treatment for targeting stubborn fat pockets that are resistant to diet and exercise, or for a more global debulking option. truSculpt iD is not restricted by BMI or skin laxity concerns, making it a great alternative to cryotherapies. To learn more about if you’re a suitable candidate, book a free consultation with Sue at Finesse.

How many treatments will I need?

Your initial assessment and personal goals will determine the best course

of treatment tailored to you, however patients will only require one treatment. Whether one or two treatments are required, all patients will see an effect at 12 weeks.

Is the treatment painful? No! Patients report the treatment feels like getting into a hot bath. The heat at first can be a little intense, but just like a bath you become accustomed to the feeling and adjust to the treatment. There is no pain, no downtime and no massage required. Patients can return to normal activities immediately after with most patients only experiences some mild redness on the treatment zone which subsides in a couple of hours.

How long before I see my results?

Clients will begin to see a change in their silhouette from 6 – 8 weeks post treatment, but maximum results are achieved at week 12. Changes in skin quality, tone and texture are usually seen earlier. Each area can be treated once per 12-weeks but other areas can be treated before then.

Profhilo Face

Are you optimising the benefits?

When Profhilo finally reached our shores in 2021 it was a bit like menopause. We had heard the rumours, we had even done the reading, but nothing quite prepares you for the reality.

The ‘I want what she’s had’ treatment was quick to take off and fast to become a favourite amongst all age groups.

Research now shows that Profhilo, because of its combination of highweight HA designed to stimulate collagen and elastin, and its low-weight HA for hydration, can be used much more frequently than first thought.

Traditional HA dermal fillers are made to replace volume and while some are low viscosity or are soft for more mobile areas of the face, overuse can leave the skin appearing puffy.

Profhilo lends itself to a wide range of patients, with collagen and elastin production beginning to slow from as early as our 20s, with those who see the largest difference are often women experiencing menopause. Which brings with it some of the most radical changes to our skin since puberty. clinic42.co.nz

Everyone’s experience is different, but here are some of the typical effects, you can expect to see on your skin during perimenopause, menopause, and eventually post menopause:

• decreased oestrogen receptor expression

• rapid decline in skin collagen in menopause with one third lost in the first five years

Retreat from Defeat

WORDS

I was sipping champagne at the Viaduct when the phone rang, interrupting the pretend lone celebration I was gushing to a restaurant manager about, at 9am.

It was The Retreat NZ, one of the country’s only residential alcohol rehabilitation centres. They’d caught me three glasses in. Or, rather, three sheets gone. “I’ll taxi there now,” I said, as if it was a hangover cure and not a solution for my progressive and fatal disease of alcoholism.

I knew innately that I was seriously sick, and this phone call remains the most pivotal one I’ve ever taken. If I hadn’t, and if The Retreat hadn’t been so genuinely caring, understanding and accommodating, I don’t doubt that I’d be dead.

By the time I arrived, I couldn’t walk. My alcoholism was so severe that I had nerve damage and muscle deterioration. Over the next four days my 24/7 drinking turned into a 24/7 detox, with around the clock staff treating my withdrawal symptoms, along with a lot of tender loving care. I cried, and couldn’t eat, while the adult diapers were a definitive life low point. I was, literally, a big baby.

The Retreat NZ is grounded in the 12 step principles of recovery. I’m not a religious person and the words ‘God’ and ‘ginger beer’ weren’t ones I could relate to, but when the treatment programme was described to me as a spiritual one, I easily grasped the concept of a power greater than myself. I lost my mum – my best friend and my only real family –to alcoholism. I had full faith in her, but no belief whatsoever in complete

powerlessness over alcohol. I was quietly sure I could regain control.

I nevertheless completed The Retreat’s comprehensive 30-day programme of therapies, group classes and recovery meetings. All the staff have overcome addiction themselves, so they have a unique, empathic and non-judgmental approach. I liked them. Despite having dear friends, I didn’t have the families, partners, or spouses of other guests, so the staff also became my main support network. On the surface, life looked good, but I never really felt good enough. Behind my permanently painted-on mask was deep depression, anxiety, loneliness, insecurity, a total loss of confidence, unhealthy relationships and a high-pressured career. Alcohol had been my solution and, rather than work the lifesaving one I’d been taught, it soon became my biggest problem when I suffered a series of life-threatening relapses.

I had been dishonest with myself and everyone around me – and, this time, losing my ability to walk was just the start. There were multiple ambulances. Blackouts. Dangerous situations. Accidents. Hospitalisation 11 times in a year and alcohol withdrawal seizures that almost ended everything. I was overwhelmed with remorse, regret, guilt, shame, and total hopelessness. I had battered and bruised both my body and my brain. I’d broken my own heart and those of my loved ones.

Through all of this, The Retreat’s CEO, Janet Thompson, had done everything she could to help me, but I hadn’t helped myself. I remembered something she once told me: “You can have one thing

and lose everything. Or give up one thing and have everything.”

Finally, I gave up my losing battle. I pulled out the toolbox The Retreat NZ had given me and started using it to rebuild the life I’m truly lucky to have, with a programme that has a 100% success rate if I 100% work it. It is a programme, not just for my sobriety, but for my best life. I’m blessed with a very special mentor who guides me through it each day – it is a ‘we’ not ‘me’ programme, because I know I can’t do it alone.

These days, I’m also studying mental health and addiction recovery. I go into The Retreat NZ once a week as part of that but, most importantly, to lend a hand to the one that was there for me the most. I am so thankful for the level of trust and respect I receive there, and the chance to fulfil my passion to help other recovering alcoholics. The Retreat NZ remains my second home and those therein a family. I know firsthand that the team truly care, and go above and beyond to help people like me. I cannot think of a better way to say thank you and I now treat my recovery as though my life depends on it, because, it does.

Longing for the Language

Men are often labelled as lacking in the language skills to properly express their emotions. But it doesn’t just boil down to biological sex.

Research proves that there is nothing about the makeup of the male grey matter that makes it any less emotionally capable than the female one, with one study, published in Nature , concluding that our brains are “clearly, consistently and unmistakably more similar than they are different”.

So, what’s going on?

“Men and women possess the same spectrum of emotions, yet societal expectations dictate vastly different approaches to emotional expression,” says Simone-Ellen Keller, personal transformation strategist and founder of Genius You, a programme that “teaches you to harness your mind by deepening your understanding of how you operate”. Boys, she adds, are taught to suppress vulnerability from a young age and uphold an image of stoicism, “reinforcing the notion that real men don't show emotions”.

Speaking to the Washington Post, Fredric Rabinowitz, chair of the psychology department at the University of Redlands in California, goes so far as to state: “We don’t train boys to have vocabulary around their emotions beyond anger.” This, he continues, means more profound emotions, rather than

Beauty & Health 74

embraced and expressed, become buried and separated leading to “unprocessed trauma” further down the line. Mental health issues aside, it can also have negative physiological consequences, with studies showing links to cognitive decline and cardiovascular disease. But it’s not just men who are propagating the issue, according to psychologist Paulette Kouffman Sherman, many women still harbour the belief that blokes should be “strong, silent, fixer” types, and that to be too emotionally available is simply not attractive.

“Vulnerability is not synonymous with weakness; it's a sign of strength and courage,” insists Simone-Ellen. “By acknowledging and accepting their emotional landscape, men can cultivate deeper connections with themselves and those around them.” But changing – and challenging – such a widely accepted emotional landscape is difficult. “Men must recognise that seeking help is not a sign of failure but a proactive step towards self-improvement. Whether through therapy, coaching, or support groups, there are myriad resources available to facilitate this journey of self-discovery."

Experts argue that just as children are taught at a young age about colours and their varying shades, so they should also be taught about their emotions and the varying shades of those,

“By embracing emotional growth, men can unlock their full potential and lead more fulfilling lives.”

too. One such strategy is RULER from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, which emphasises the importance of understanding and effectively managing emotions in order to cultivate positive relationships, make sound decisions, and thrive personally and professionally. It’s aimed at all ages, for men and women:

Recognise your own emotions and the emotions of others while developing an awareness of their wide range.

· Understand the causes and consequences of those recognised emotions, while noting their complexity and nuances.

· L abel emotions by naming and expressing feelings using a diverse emotional vocabulary. This step helps articulate emotions more effectively, facilitating communication and understanding in interpersonal interactions.

· E xpress emotions to enable finding healthy and appropriate ways to communicate your feelings to others. This can include verbal and nonverbal communication such as sharing thoughts and feelings openly, using body language, and through creative outlets like art or writing.

Regulate emotions in order to manage and control your responses to different situations. This includes strategies for coping with stress, calming yourself when feeling overwhelmed, and making constructive choices in response to emotions.

Simone-Ellen insists we must “shatter the silence surrounding men's mental health” in order to create “a more compassionate, inclusive future”. “By embracing emotional growth, men can unlock their full potential and lead more fulfilling lives,” she says. “Let's start the conversation and break down the barriers that have held us back for far too long."

Sweet Dreams

From increasing energy levels to encouraging radiant skin and improving overall wellbeing, a good night’s sleep is essential.

The experts at BedsRus may have just cracked the code to a perfect night’s sleep with their new bed-matching technology, Sleepmap. It uses pressure mapping technology to match individual sleepers and/or couples with the best bed according to their unique sleep profile. We sat down with Steph Thompson, marketing manager at BedsRus, to learn more.

What’s Sleepmap all about?

As a brand we are really passionate about finding Kiwis their best sleep. Sleepmap is here to help Kiwis make confident choices when choosing their next new bed. We know it’s a big choice and your sleep quality depends on getting it right. An NZ-first bed-matching system, it uses thousands of pressure-mapping sensors to create a sleep profile unique to you and matches you with a bed from our extensive BedsRus range. It’s a free service and there is no obligation to buy once you’ve received your sleep profile.

Just how important is a good bed?

It’s essential! There is so much information out there and choosing the right bed can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’ve invested in Sleepmap – for those of us who are not bed-buying experts it really takes the guesswork out of choosing a bed. Most customers are

surprised how easy it is. Sleepmap can also help with choosing the right pillow, which again is vitally important.

Can you outline the step-by-step process of using Sleepmap?

It only takes a few minutes. You are invited to lie down in your preferred sleeping position on Sleepmap. The sensors will capture your body’s unique pressure map and a sleep profile will be produced. Your results will be explained, and you’ll be shown where you are mapped on our Comfort Level System. Our sleep specialist will then pinpoint which beds fall within your prescribed comfort level.

What if I’m a front sleeper?

It’s important to let us know what kind of sleeper you are: front, side or back. Your sleeping position is one of the key factors in determining your comfort level. Some people can sleep on all three sides during the night. Our sleep specialists have the knowledge and expertise to help you choose the right bed based on your sleeping position.

Does Sleepmap still work for people who share a bed?

Absolutely – it works extremely well for couples. Finding the correct bed for one person’s profile is hard enough – can

you imagine trying to find it unassisted if you consider different sleep positions and preferences for two people? It can make choosing a bed even more challenging! Someone often must compromise, meaning that at least one of you will not be able to achieve quality sleep. Sleepmap helps you quickly and accurately pinpoint what comfort level suits your – and your partner’s – specific needs. There are beds out there that can work for both of you.

How many BedsRus stores offer Sleepmap?

Twenty-eight national stores are now fitted with Sleepmap, with seven more coming soon. It’s about making the process of choosing a bed more accurate and beneficial. It’s also about giving as many Kiwis as possible access to information that’s going to improve their wellbeing. Sleepmap, like everything else we do, brings us a step closer to our larger goal of helping every Kiwi achieve wellness through great sleep.

your journey to better sleep.

Everlasting WORDS

More than 50 years ago, at Ellerslie Racecourse, David Coon placed a bet on a horse called King Amber because he believed that it had in some way spoken to him. The horse came in, not only winning for David what was then “a good week’s wage” but altering the course of his life forever.

84

Only hours earlier, David – who hails from Wisconsin – had arrived on the Mariposa cruise liner from San Franscico, aboard which he ran the gift shop. Auckland was part of a six-week voyage that also included a selection of other Pacific Islands like Tonga and Hawai’i.

“It was a Saturday and I jumped into a taxi on Queen Street and the driver asked where I wanted to go,” recalls David over coffee and cake at his Avondale home with his wife, Margaret. “I asked for some suggestions, and he said that the only thing of any interest was the races, so off we went.”

As David had never attended the races before, the taxi driver kindly hung around for a while, getting the US tourist a race book and showing him the ropes. Following his hot streak, David decided to not push his luck any further and save his winnings by getting a bus back into town rather than a cab.

“And the only other person that was on that bus was Margaret,” David tells me as he looks lovingly over to his wife.

I follow David’s gaze to see Margaret return it with a raised eyebrow and look of playful suspicion.

“Now, that’s not quite true!” she ribs him. “There were a few other people, I was not the only one!”

“I thought you were!”

Either way, David chose to sit next to her, and Margaret jokes that she remembers thinking: “What a blinking cheek!”

“I asked what she’d bet on, but she didn’t answer me,” chuckles David. “She didn’t talk to me until we got to Newmarket. I asked

“But I knew the moment I left San Francisco that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her,” says David.

if she wanted to meet later, and she said only if I got off the bus at the next stop to meet her mother first.”

“I was only 23, and I knew what my mother would say if I came home and said, 'Well, I've met this strange man on the bus, and he wants to take me out to dinner.' So, he did.”

After dinner David returned to his ship, and the pair met briefly the following day.

“She was a florist,” David continues. “I went to the shop and said goodbye to her, we only had about 15 minutes, then I returned to the ship and sailed off. Six weeks later, I came back on another circuit, and we spent the day together.”

Almost literally ‘like ships in the night’, David left again the next day and disaster struck in Hawai’i.

“I lost my way in Honolulu, and I couldn't find where to return my hire car. By the time I got to the ship, all the doors were closed, and I couldn't get on.”

With no one to run the gift shop, David was instantly dismissed.

“David got there as the ship was leaving,” says Margaret. “He was so close he could have touched it.”

It would be another 18 months before the pair felt the warmth of each other’s touch again and communicated only via letters in the meantime.

“I got turned down by immigration – they just wanted people with money back then, which I didn’t have,” says David.

continues over page

85 April 2024

“Eventually my cousin rang immigration in Wellington and said that my mum and I would fly down in person to meet them and explain the situation,” recalls Margaret. “And with that, they had a change of heart and let him in!”

The year was 1971, and David proposed on his first night back. But there were still further battles ahead.

“Dave had been married before, and I'm an Anglican and the Anglican church in those days wouldn't marry us,” says Margaret. “We ended up getting married in Greyfriars in Mount Eden, a Presbyterian church.”

Their families, too, thought that the marriage would not last –perhaps understandably as the couple had only spent a total of around three weeks in each other’s presence upon their engagement.

“But I knew the moment I left San Francisco that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her,” says David.

“Better than Married at First Sight,” says Margaret, “and we had more clothes on!”

David later worked at the iconic K’ Road department store George Court & Sons under Stephen Tindall (before he founded the Warehouse and became a Sir) and opened a Mount Eden florist with his wife, called Margo’s (it’s still there, now named Roses).

“It was an empty dry-cleaning shop,” recalls Margaret. “We had no money behind us, so it was a big gamble, and so it’s nice to see it’s still going.”

“Kindness and patience are essential,” says David.

David also developed a love of horseracing – a passion passed on from Margaret’s family – and they remain active members of the racing community, attending events and owning shares in nine steeds.

“Ten years ago, as a surprise, David bought me a squarefoot plot of land in Scotland which automatically made me a Lady,” reveals Margaret. “For my next birthday, he arranged for some racing people to meet us at Ellerslie where I was to present a woolen blanket to a horse, and on it it said: ‘Presented by Lady Margaret Coon.’ Then he told me to open the race book and there was a race sponsored by Lady Margaret. It was such a wonderful day.”

Surprise grand romantic gestures aside, I ask the couple –who have a daughter and three grandchildren – the secret to their long and happy marriage.

“You have to work as a team,” says Margaret. “Also, we’ve rarely argued, ever.”

“Kindness and patience are essential,” says David.

Given their story, I ask, do they believe in fate?

“You have to,” says Margaret. “Although he’d come from America, we had the same values and principles. We had similar upbringings and strong role models by way of both sets of our parents who also had strong, long marriages.”

And most importantly of course, even with the might of the Pacific Ocean between them – and all that came with it – they never gave up on themselves, or each other.

Let’s Eat Out Taste & Drink

Wine columnist and connoisseur DENNIS KNILL gives his views on two new wines from Pernod Ricard.

Pernod Ricard has recently launched Aces & Arrows Wine Co.

The new brand includes two wines each with a different story produced by a different winemaker with grapes from a different region. Setting the wines apart was given to local winemakers from the North and South Islands.

Central Otago has a reputation for quality pinot noir with Aces & Arrows producing one of the best from the 2021 vintage. Renowned for style, complexity, and richness, syrah grapes dominate Hawke’s Bay.

If you’re looking for added variety at a reasonable price don’t pass on these two

’21 Aces & Arrows pinot noir; RRP $27. A medium-bodied wine that’s fresh, fruity and flavoursome. Full and bright in colour and texture with a finely balanced mouthfilling fragrance. A good introduction by the winemaker. Pair with beef, lamb, pork, duck, chicken and pasta.

’21 Aces & Arrows syrah; RRP $27. Dark and fruity, this vibrant and stylish wine has depth and character, nicely rounded off with soft silky tannins. A great food and wine match ready for drinking now. Serve with game, venison, veal, lamb cutlets, BBQ meats, and casseroles.

DENNIS and ROSAMUND KNILL

A small shopping strip in the heart of Morningside doesn’t usually dish up notable meals, but there are exceptions to all rules. Exceptions such as Sake Bar Icco.

In a former retail shop in this community hub, 20 tables are jammed so close together you can’t avoid the neighbourhood gossip! Alternatively, you can sit at the bar counter and follow your meal being prepared from the open kitchen. First impressions are more like a café than a restaurant, but nevertheless, Sake Bar Icco has a loyal following that continues to draw in the crowds and will always remain popular as long as it sticks to what it does well. Weekend tables are booked for weeks well in advance.

Although the menu is plain and small, coupled with its daily specials it covers a lot of territory. The ingredients are fresh and the standard high, dispelling any notion that one Japanese restaurant is much the same as the next. The cuisine is light and delicate, their tempura is served hot and lightly crisped. Entrees include homemade pickles ($13); salmon agria potato ($13); sashimi ($19-52); white fish tempura ($25); green salad ($13); and spring rolls ($19) –all faithful renditions. For something more substantial there is our favourite teriyaki chicken ($34); tempura udon ($28); chicken katsu ($30); market fish ($37); salmon avocado ($22); miso king salmon ($37); prawn tempura avo ($25); or the chef’s selection ($36). Each are perfect when washed down with sake, plum wine, or Japanese beer.

There’s no Japanese simplicity with the desserts but rather the more traditional dishes like crème brulee, panna cotta, and toffee pie ($11-15)

And the verdict? Technical precision and attention to detail make this popular Japanese eatery one of Auckland’s most interesting, with delicious food hitting the tables. There is respect for the individuality of flavours and a focus that is so visually appealing it’s a shame to dismantle what’s put on the plate in front of you. Artful presentation and generous portions all add to a dining experience that won’t ravage the budget.

All About Anna

WORDS
Food & Wine 96
JAMIE CHRISTIAN DESPLACES
London-based cook and food stylist Anna Jones is a multi-award-winning writer whose books like One: Pot, Pan, Planet and The Modern Cook’s Year have won her legions of fans around the world.

“The voice of modern vegetarian cooking” first cut her teeth in the kitchen of Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen programme and went on to work for him for seven years. With her latest book, Easy Wins, on shelves now, Verve chats with Anna to learn more.

“It was fantastic working for Jamie,” she says. “It felt like learning to cook on fast forward. We had such amazing access to suppliers and brilliant chefs teaching us. Then when I went on to work for Jamie in his food business it was the most nurturing and fast-paced environment to learn about food media. I learned very quickly how what was important in a recipe and what made it work. About the accessibility of ingredients. I owe him a lot.”

What advice would you give to young chefs coming through now?

“Write and ask to work in the kitchens of the chefs that you respect. You might not get paid a lot, but you will learn. My experience of food people is that they are open and generous and if you go in intending to work hard and be helpful and learn, then most people will be open and generous in sharing the knowledge they have. I would also say that now there are so many different jobs in food, it's

not just about cooking in a restaurant, there are so many places within the media where you can work on food. There are so many amazing producers that need help making their artisan products. It's a different industry to the one that I started out in and that's undoubtedly a good thing.”

Anns reveals that Nigella Lawson was her “first love in terms of cooks” (“I loved how she was a proud feminist woman but still cooking on her own terms”) and singles out Nigel Slater (“his food writing is poetry”) and “my friend Gurdeep Loyal” for his “interesting work”. As for heroes outside the kitchen?

“My grandma on my dad's side had 12 children and was a brilliant mother to all of them. I think there is a definite heroism in that. Also, the doctors and nurses who looked after my baby Eska when he was born struggling to breathe in the neonatal unit at Homerton Hospital.”

Has motherhood altered your approach to cooking?

“Yes, without question. I cook much more quickly now. I want my recipes to be packed with flavour, but I want that to happen quickly and easily without too much fuss. Whilst I am someone who cooks for a living, I still only spend 20 to 30 minutes cooking our family meals on weeknights, so I feel like I cook under the same pressure as anyone else who lives a busy life. My most recent book, Easy Wins, was born out of that. I want the recipes in it to be the recipes that are easy to make when you get home late from work and haven't got much in the tank or in the fridge. I want the recipes to feel like friends who are comforting you at the end of a long day. I fear like a meal that comes together easily and quickly and that is eaten by everyone in my family feels like a small but important daily moment of triumph.”

WHAT’S COOKING?

What advice would you give for those considering cutting down their meat intake, or converting fully to vegetarianism, but are feeling daunted by the prospect?

“My advice would be to start from where you are and not to be too perfectionistic about every single meal. For me, the aim is to get as many people eating as many vegetable-centred meals as possible. Obviously, the ideal would be a world full of vegans and vegetarians, but the reality is that some people will be shifting one meal a week away from meat, whereas others may be fine-tuning their vegan diet. Know that every meal is an opportunity to make change for a more sustainable way of eating and a great opportunity to put stuff into your body that makes you feel good as well as making it as delicious and joyful as possible.”

How easy did you find that journey?

“I found the change to vegetarianism very easy! In fact, it opened up a whole new more creative way of cooking which I found really fun. I love the challenge of always putting seasonal vegetables at the centre of what I eat. I often think that the best things we do come out of limitations, and whilst I don't see vegetarianism as necessarily a limitation, it has made me a better cook. But I'm aware that I cook for a living and it's not going to be easy for everyone to stop, so my advice would be to find a couple of vegetarian or vegan meals that echo things you and your family already love to eat.”

Do you think a time will come when humans no longer consume meat?

“I would like to think that there is a world in which that might happen. But more than no longer consuming meat, I would like to see us meet the climate pledges which will help us to stay within the warming targets laid out. I think consuming far less meat is an important part of that.”

“My advice would be to start from where you are and not to be too perfectionistic about every single meal.”

I ask Anna about her guilty pleasures in the kitchen, she pushes back against the phrase (“I don’t think we should put guilt and food in the same sentence”) but admits to being partial to mozzarella quesadillas: “I’ve been making them a lot recently a lot recently, small flour tortillas stuffed with mozzarella and fried in the pan until melting and crisp around the edges. I eat them with chilli sauce. A quick fun snack!

“My mum used to make an amazing cheese souffle that was part of her weeknight repertoire. She’s not someone who loves to cook, but her souffle is so good.”

As for pop culture guilty pleasures, Anna names the movie Mannequin with Kim Cattrall (“showing my age!”), or pretty much any Jennifer Anniston film (“most of them are terrible but for some reason I find her comforting”), all best enjoyed with sweet, salty popcorn.

I finish up by asking Anna if she’s ever visited Aotearoa New Zealand.

“Sadly no,” she says, “but I would love to go one day. We have lots of friends who live in there and my husband John is keen to come for the surf.”

Guilty, As Charged!

Verve sits down with some leading Auckland chefs to discover what they cook when no one’s looking…

Rob Hope-Ede

The head chef at Park Hyatt’s Onemata restaurant has previously worked in prestigious kitchens around the world, and some of our nation’s top eateries like Giraffe, Jervois Steakhouse, and Euro, alongside the likes of Simon Gault.

His love of cooking, he tells Verve , began as a toddler when he would sit on the kitchen bench and watch his mum baking. “My job was always to put the fork mark on the chocolate chip biscuits,” he says. And was his dad handy in the kitchen? “His signature dish would probably be toast!”

“From a young age mum always use to feed me chicken liver pate,” adds Rob. “I always have it on the menu in some way where I'm working. At Onemata, it’s duck liver with a rich kūmara syrup.”

And so, on to the good stuff – what’s your ultimate guilty pleasure?!

“I have never had – or plan to have – a deep-fried Mars bar. However, put one in the microwave for 30 seconds and you have instant deliciousness. Plus, it extends the eating time as you struggle to scrape the caramelised filling off the plate!”

What about pop culture guilty pleasures?

“Hair metal bands from the 80s – they’re what headphones were invented for!”

Anything you recommend for a hangover?

“Probably not having children! My adorable two-year-old daughter Maxine is a true blessing, however, she is too young to understand a hangover and always makes me question if the next drink is worth it in the morning!”

What was your favourite meal as a kid?

“Without doubt, braised lamb shanks – they are still my favourite now. My ultimate comfort food.”

What indulgent dishes do your family most love for you to cook for them?

“Both my wife and daughter love lasagne. To make it extra flavourful, I always cook a tub of chicken livers with the mince, it adds a such a richness.”

Best snack for watching a movie?

“Can’t go past the choc-top ice cream!”

A RECIPE FROM ROB FLOURLESS ORANGE CAKE

250g orange puree (recipe below)

5 eggs (size7)

130g white sugar

40g maple syrup

170g ground almonds

50g coarse polenta

Mix all ingredients together and bake in a 21cm cake tin at 160C for 40 minutes or until a cake skewer comes out cleanly.

Orange puree

Take two oranges and place into a saucepan and cover with water, bring to a simmer and simmer for two hours or until the oranges are soft. Blend to a smooth puree.

Spice syrup

100g white sugar

50g butter

1 small slice of fresh ginger

1 vanilla pod seeds

1 star anise

50ml orange juice

Combine the sugar, butter and spices in a small pot, heat until the sugar has dissolved, and stir in the orange juice and whisk to combine. Allow to infuse for at least 30 minutes before straining. Cut the cake into pieces and serve with whipped cream or yoghurt, and pieces of your favourite fruit.

Zennon Wijlens

The head chef and co-owner of Paris Butter, Zennon Wijlens, is regarded as one of the country’s most exciting culinary talents, recently winning Chef of the Year at Cuisine’s Good Food Awards.

“My favourite meal as a kid was always a Sunday roast whether it was chicken or lamb,” he tells Verve . “Both Mum and Dad worked so much, so they had a limited repertoire and were very much meat-and-three-veg folks which was also part of the reason I was inspired to become a chef.”

Have any favourite childhood dishes ever inspired you professionally?

“Not those specifically. However, I have nostalgic components on dishes based on memories and travel. A great example of this would be my grandma Pat Trotman’s famous chutney – we use her base recipe and change out the fruit according to the season. It’s a hit with our guests and also goes on great with ham and fake cheese sandwiches.”

Are those your favourite guilty pleasures?

“That would be fake cheese quesadillas – it has to be with Anchor Smoked Processed Cheese Slices. A sandwich

101 April 2024

press is absolutely essential for this recipe. Our sandwich press is most likely our most-used piece of equipment in our home kitchen.”

Is that what you’re most likely to cook after a long shift?

“I’m pretty good at sticking to my meal plan provided by my nutritionist – apart from on a cheat day. Usually when I get home, it’s just a protein shake before bed.”

Any go-to meals for hangover recovery?!

“A good one in our house is always a cheese scone eggs benedict – but again, only on cheat days!” (Recipe to the right)

How about pop culture guilty pleasures?

“True crime docos. On a Sunday, there’s nothing better than a good binge session after a busy week of training and cooking.”

And what are you eating while watching them?

“Twisties and light buttered popcorn mix, ratios need to be one small snack pack of each mixed together.”

ZEN’S RECIPE

CHEESE AND BACON SCONE EGGS BENEDICT

Cheese and bacon scones (Makes 8 scones)

2 cups grated cheese, plus a little extra for sprinkling

3 rashers bacon, cooked, cooled and thinly sliced

4 cups self-raising flour, plus a little extra for dusting

½ tsp of salt

¼ tsp of cayenne pepper

2¼ -2½ cups of milk

Miso hollandaise (Serves 2-4)

150g unsalted butter

2 large free-range egg yolks

1 dessert spoon white wine vinegar

1 lemon

½ tsp white miso

To serve

Small handful baby spinach, per serve

Two strips of cooked streaky bacon, per serve

Two poached eggs, per serve

For the cheese and bacon scones: Preheat oven to 200C. Line a baking tray with baking paper.

In a large bowl combine the cheese and bacon with the flour, salt and cayenne pepper. Slowly add the milk and gently mix the dough with a loose hand.

When the mixture is just combined, tip it on to a floured surface and gently bring it together. Do not over-mix the dough or the scones will be tough.

Place handfuls of the dough on to the prepared oven tray and sprinkle over extra cheese. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden.

For the miso hollandaise: Get a saucepan and a heatproof mixing bowl that will sit stably over the pan. Half-fill the pan with water and bring to a simmer. Turn down the heat as low as it can go but still have the water simmering.

Place the butter in a medium pan over low heat, so it starts to melt but doesn’t burn. When the butter has melted, take it off the heat.

Place the egg yolks in your heatproof mixing bowl, which you should then place over the pan of just-simmering water. It’s important that the saucepan is on low heat, or the eggs will scramble.

Using a whisk, start to beat your eggs, then whisk in your white wine vinegar and finally the miso.

Keep whisking, and then start adding the melted butter by slowly drizzling it in, whisking all the time, till all the butter has been incorporated. The result should be a lovely, smooth, thick sauce.

Season carefully with sea salt, and loosen if necessary with little hot water. Keep tasting the sauce until the flavour is to your liking.

To serve: Toast two halves of the cheese and bacon scones and top with baby spinach, cooked bacon and two poached eggs. Drizzle over the miso hollandaise and enjoy.

Andrew Lautenbach

Andrew Lautenbach, executive chef at kingi and The Hotel Britomart, is another superstar of the kitchens of the City of Sails, having worked in Michelin-starred eateries in Europe before returning home to New Zealand. His ultimate guilty pleasure, he tells Verve , is “cheese, in any form!”

“It must also be served at room temperature of course,” he adds. “If I feel like a cheese toastie, the trick is to spread miso paste on the bread.”

Is that what we’d most likely find you munching on after work?

“I eat whatever I can find! Normally, it’s dried fruit and marmite-flavoured crackers.”

What about hangover cures?

“Most of my life it’s been a red Powerade, piccolo coffees, and sweating it out on the ovens.”

What was your favourite meal as a kid?

“Corned beef, bread sauce and kumara, followed by my Oma’s Dutch apple tart.”

Have these ever inspired you in a professional capacity?

“Absolutely, nostalgia is important when thinking about new dishes. Because you want to let guests enjoy food from the chef’s heart. If you’re not proud of the dish, then the guest will not enjoy it either.”

Any family favourite indulgent dishes?

“I don’t cook at home as much as I want too, but when I do its normally something roasted with heaps of wagyu fat.”

What about pop culture guilty pleasures?

“I enjoy watching British movies by Guy Ritchie, anything with a dry sense of humour. The music I listen to includes Tool, Metallica and Fatboy Slim.”

And best snacks for watching those Guy Ritchie flicks? “Has to be tamari-roasted almonds and a Coke No Sugar.”

Courgettes Agrodolce with Sticky Onions

(Serves 2 as a main, 4 as a side)

Agrodolce means sweet and sour in Italian. In Italy there are so many ways of using this contrast of flavours to bring out the most in ingredients. Here I've used courgettes, but this technique would work for aubergine, thinly sliced butternut squash or fennel. The hit of vinegar which might feel angry on its own is offset with a little bit of sugar, which mellows the acidity and rounds off the flavour. I've written this recipe to serve 2 people but it can easily be doubled, though you will need to fry the courgettes in a few batches.

Ingredients

5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus a little extra to serve

4 small or 2 regular courgettes (500g), cut into 1.5cm-thick rounds

1 red onion, peeled and thinly sliced

4 tablespoons red wine vinegar

1 tablespoon golden caster sugar

1 teaspoon dried chilli flakes, plus extra to serve

1 clove of garlic, peeled and thinly sliced ½ a bunch of mint (15g), leaves picked 250g ricotta

Directions

Fry the courgettes

Heat a frying pan over a medium h igh heat and add 5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil. Season 500g courgettes cut into 1.5cm-thick rounds with sea salt and fry them for 3-4 minutes on each side or until blistering and golden brown, then remove with a slotted spoon on to a plate.

Cook the onion and add the agrodolce

Add 1 thinly sliced red onion to the same pan and lower the heat.

Fry for 10 minutes until soft, then add 4 tablespoons red wine vinegar, 1 tablespoon golden caster sugar and 1 teaspoon dried chilli flakes and return the courgette pieces to the pan. Cook for a few minutes, then taste and season and divide the courgettes and onion between two plates.

Season and finish

Sprinkle over 1 peeled and thinly sliced clove of garlic and a few more dried chilli flakes, tear over the leaves from half a bunch of mint and drizzle with a little olive oil. Season 250g of ricotta with salt and pepper and spoon it next to the courgettes.

Cauliflower Caponata

(Serves 4)

Caponata is a masterclass in balancing sweet, sour and salty. It's most often made with aubergine, which you have to fry in lots of olive oil first, making it less of a weeknight situation. This buttery cauliflower version is all done in the oven and to me it's just as good as the aubergine version. It has the texture of a stew and can be eaten warm as an antipasto, as is most common in Italy, or on toast or tossed through pasta.

Ingredients

1kg cauliflower, broken into roughly 4cm florets

3 red onions (350g), peeled and cut into eighths

3 sticks of celery, cut into 2cm pieces extra virgin olive oil

3 tablespoons white wine vinegar

2 x 400g tins plum tomatoes

100g stone-in green or black olives, stones removed (I use a mixture of both)

3 tablespoons capers

50g raisins

½ a bunch of parsley (20g), leaves picked warm bread, to serve

Directions

Preheat the oven and roast the cauliflower

Preheat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan. Put a cauliflower, broken into roughly 4cm florets, 3 red onions, peeled and cut into eighths, and 3 sticks of celery, cut into 2cm pieces, into a large, high-sided baking tray with I tablespoon extra virgin olive oil, 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar and a little sea salt and pepper. Toss to coat, then roast for 25 minutes, until everything is slightly charred and starting to soften. Turn the oven down to 200°C/I80°C fan.

Add the rest

Add 2 x 400g tins of plum tomatoes, breaking them in your hands as you do so, along with rnog stone-in green or black olives (stones removed), 3 tablespoons capers and 50g raisins. Give everything a good mix, mashing slightly with a fork, and return to the oven for 40 minutes, or until everything is soft and sticky.

Finish with the vinegar and oil

Once ready, and while the mix is still piping hot, add another tablespoon of vinegar, toss through a handful of parsley leaves and serve. Finish with a very generous dousing of extra virgin olive oil to bring it all together.

Frizzled Spring Onion and Olive Oil Dip

(Serves 4)

John is obsessed with dips. He will dip almost anything, especially pizza crusts. I can't quite get into the pizza crusts into sour cream and chive dip he loves, but I do love a dip. This one is a take on the traditionally Chinese spring onion oil, but with a hit of chilli and turmeric, and sits on top of a thick lime yoghurt.

You can buy really good thick Greek yoghurt from the supermarket or your local shop. If your yoghurt is not thick (and by that I mean spoonable, almost the consistency of clotted cream), then you can strain the yoghurt yourself. Hang it in a piece of muslin or a clean thin tea towel over a mixing bowl overnight or for as long as you have to thicken it. It's fine out of the fridge overnight.

Ingredients

1 bunch of spring onions, trimmed

150ml extra virgin olive oil

1 teaspoon Turkish chilli flakes or ½ teaspoon chilli flakes

1 teaspoon caster sugar

½ teaspoon ground turmeric

150g thick strained Greek yoghurt zest and juice of 2 unwaxed limes

Directions

Prep and frizzle the spring onions

Trim then thinly slice both the white and green parts of I bunch of spring onions, then put them into a small pan with moml olive oil and I teaspoon Turkish chilli flakes and cook over a low-medium heat until you can hear everything begin to sizzle. Cook until the edges of the spring onions are beginning to brown and crisp. Add 1 teaspoon sugar and ½ teaspoon ground turmeric and cook for another minute.

Cool and season

Take the pan off the heat and allow the oil to cool in the pan. Once cool, season with salt and pepper.

Season the yoghurt and serve

Mix 150g thick strained Greek yoghurt with the juice and zest of 2 limes, season well with sea salt, then put into a shallow bowl or on a plate. Swirl in the oil and serve with warm bread or raw veg for dipping.

Baklava Cheesecake with Orange Blossom Syrup

(Serves 8–10)

Nothing beats the flavours of a gorgeous baklava — think orange, saffron, honey and pistachios. Imagine the perfection of combining those flavours with a creamy baked cheesecake. A Middle Eastern-inspired treat, perfect for a celebration.

Ingredients

For the base

250g pistachios

200g mixed nuts

¼ cup sugar

1 tsp ground cinnamon

½ tsp ground cardamom

12 sheets store-bought filo pastry

125g butter, melted

For the filling

450g cream cheese, at room temperature

120g sugar

15g plain flour

3 eggs

75g double cream

For the orange blossom syrup

½ cup honey

½ cup water

½ cup sugar

2 tsp rose water

2 tsp orange blossom water

Pinch of saffron (optional)

Dried rose petals, fresh rose petals and extra pistachios, to garnish

Directions

Preheat the oven to 160°C fanbake. Grease a 22cm loose-bottomed cake tin.

For the base:

Place the nuts in a food processor and whizz until finely chopped. Transfer to a large bowl, add the sugar and the spices and stir to combine.

Place a sheet of filo pastry in the cake tin and brush with melted butter. Cover with one more layer of filo brushed with butter — the sheets will hang over the edge. Sprinkle a layer of spiced nuts over top. Butter 2 more filo sheets and place them on top of the first layer of pastry and nuts. Repeat the process with the remaining filo pastry and nut mixture, ending with a layer of filo.

For the filling :

Using an electric beater or stand mixer, whisk the cream cheese with the sugar until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the flour, eggs and double cream and whisk until just combined. Pour onto the prepared filo base. Cut the overhanging filo around the edge of the cake tin.

For the syrup:

In a saucepan, combine the honey, water and sugar over a medium–high heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Cook until the syrup thickens, then remove from the heat. Add the rose water, orange blossom water and saffron (if using). Stir to combine and set aside.

Bake the cheesecake for 45 minutes, then carefully remove the sides of the cake tin and bake for a further 20–25 minutes until golden. Remove the cheesecake from the oven and pour the syrup over the edges and sides. Allow to cool completely and then serve with dried rose petals, fresh rose petals and pistachios to garnish and a cup of apple tea.

Tip

It’s best to use double cream for the filling. You can find it near the fresh cream in your supermarket.

Chocolate Sesame Oil Cake

(Makes 23-cm cake)

Throughout the writing of this book, my husband, Miles, has been very concerned with the number of chocolate offerings (he worships chocolate). Don’t get me wrong, I like chocolate, too. Earthy and comforting, I find it’s a natural match for a pantry staple of mine: sesame oil. I love this ingredient for its deeply nutty flavor, profound fragrance, and ability to add instant dimension. And while I use it mostly (basically, always) for savoury cooking, these qualities are exactly what makes this cake so good.

This cake is moist and tender, covered with a thick chocolate and sesame paste ganache, and speckled with toasted sesame seeds for a bit of savoury crunch. The ganache will set over time, but I like it best when it’s still gooey, glossy, and warm.

Ingredients

Sesame Oil Cake

1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour

½ cup (50g) unsweetened Dutch process

cocoa powder

1½ teaspoons baking powder

½ cup (120g) boiling water

1½ teaspoons instant coffee or espresso powder

2 large eggs, at room temperature

1 large egg yolk, at room temperature

1 cup (200g) granulated sugar

148ml of bottle pure sesame oil (about 2/3 cup)

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

½ teaspoon kosher salt

2 tablespoons (30g) sesame paste

Ganache and Garnish

56g dark chocolate (70% cacao), finely chopped

¼ cup (60g) heavy cream

1 tablespoon (12g) granulated sugar

1½ teaspoons (7g) sesame paste

Pinch of kosher salt

¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

2 teaspoons black and white sesame seeds, toasted

Directions

For the sesame oil cake:

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease a 23-cm round cake pan with cooking spray and line the bottom with parchment paper.

In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder. In a liquid measuring cup, whisk together the boiling water and instant coffee.

To the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk, add the eggs, egg yolk, sugar, sesame oil, vanilla, and salt. Beat on medium-high speed until thickened and lightened in color, about 2 minutes. Beat in the sesame paste.

With the mixer on lowest speed, add half of the flour mixture and (immediately) half of the coffee mixture. Mix until just combined. Repeat, mixing until just combined.

Scrape the batter into the prepared cake pan. Bake until the top is dry and a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out mostly clean with a few sticky crumbs, 32-34 minutes.

Transfer the pan to a wire rack and let cool for 10 minutes. Run a small offset spatula around the perimeter to loosen the edges. Invert the cake onto the wire rack. Remove the parchment. Invert again onto another wire rack so it sits right side up. Let cool completely before transferring to a cake plate.

For the sesame ganache and garnish:

In a medium bowl, add the chocolate. In a small saucepan, whisk together the heavy cream, sugar, sesame paste, and salt. Heat over medium heat until it just starts to simmer. Don’t let it boil. Pour the warm cream over the chocolate and let sit for 5 minutes. Whisk in the vanilla. Let the ganache cool for a minute or so. (Basically, you don’t want the ganache to be too liquidy before pouring it over the cake. It should drip off the whisk thick and slow.)

Pour the ganache over the cake, right in the centre. Spread evenly, coaxing a few thick lazy drips over the sides in a few places. Let gravity do most of the work here. Sprinkle with the toasted sesame seeds.

Significant new works explore themes of landscape, home and knowledge. 2030 marks the 'tipping point' beyond which planetary changes might well be outside human capacity for mitigation; as Bambury says, “The world is an idea, the planet is a reality. The planet will go on turning but the world won't.” Born in Christchurch, Stephen Bambury has exhibited regularly in New Zealand since the mid-70s, and from the mid80s has exhibited in the USA, Australia, France, Germany, Austria, and Slovenia. Lucy's Corner

This month Verve’s star teen reviewer LUCY KENNEDY mulls over the controversial May December

May December

Rated M

Directed by Todd Haynes

The year is 1992. Thirteen-year-old Joe starts working after school in a pet shop and soon begins sexual relations with his co-worker, Gracie. Gracie is 36. And married, with three children. This was the case that the world knew about: a near40-year-old woman, sexually abusing a boy who was barely a teenager. Now, it’s 2015, and Joe and Gracie are married, with have kids of their own. Elizabeth Berry, an actress, is playing the role of Gracie in an upcoming film. She slips behind the sunny, rose-tinted exterior of their relationship, and studies the complicated, uncomfortable, and at times disturbing life they have built together. Elizabeth studies Gracie, trying anything she can to inhabit this person who has done the unthinkable and fractured the lives of those around her in the process. Joe is inextricably ensnared in a life with his abuser. Gracie has deluded herself into believing that she has done nothing wrong, maintaining throughout the film that Joe seduced her, despite him being, at the time, a child, and her, an educated adult.

IMAGE: MAY DECEMBER

This film is an in-depth examination of the consequences of Gracie’s choice to fracture her life for an illegal and abusive affair. A convoluted, twisted story that is repulsively compelling and will leave you both aghast and amazed. Being based on the true crime of the Mary Kay Letourneau case adds another element of morbid fascination to the story. The film’s inescapable, overarching question is: “Who could do such a thing?” You’ll certainly be asking yourself the same question for days after watching.

Embracing Empathy

Kate McLean Homecare has been providing specialised in-home care for over 20 years and are experts at helping your whānau navigate their changing day-to-day life.

They have a fruitful partnership with AgeWell Physiotherapy, which boasts 15 years’ clinical experience and offers in-home therapies for over 60s. Verve sits down with Aimee McLean, general manager of Kate McLean Homecare, and AgeWell Physiotherapy director and senior physiotherapist, Marina German.

Tell us about Kate McLean Homecare and your carers?

Aimee: We have been in Auckland since 2002, providing private homecare services. Our carers are our biggest asset –we look for skilled, compassionate carers who relate well to people. We are finding an increased need for skilled dementialevel and complex-level carers, as more people prefer a home environment over an aged-care facility.

How do you match clients with caregivers, and what kinds of tasks can they carry out?

A: Carers are matched based on experience and personality, as it’s important clients enjoy their time with their carer. Continuity of care is important, allowing strong working relationships while alleviating any anxiety about having multiple carers through their house. Broadly speaking, our carers assist with everything from showering and dressing assistance, meal preparation, outings and companionship, through to medication supervision, and dementia-level care and palliative care, based on indivdual care plans created by our care manager. Our carers will also help support physiotherapy exercises and work regularly with AgeWell Physiotherapy.

How important is staying mobile as we age and how does your in-home service encourage this?

Marina : Staying mobile is essential to function well and to live independently for longer. We provide in-home tailored treatment and self-management exercise programmes specific to our clients’ needs and goals.

What are some common issues people turn to your physiotherapy treatments for?

M: Strengthening, balance training, falls prevention, mobility, and gait retraining, post operative recovery, and rehabilitation. Many of our clients want to continue living at home safely and be guided by our physiotherapists with a regular ongoing treatment plan. We work regularly with Kate McLean Homecare where their caregivers help our clients work towards great goals.

What kind of services do you provide at AgeWell Physiotherapy?

M: In-home assessment, treatment and rehabilitation following surgery or injury, balance, dizziness, preventing falls, targeted functional strength work, treating and preventing frailty, management of chronic conditions, pain and neurological physiotherapy. We see excellent results in strength, function and energy levels. We receive overwhelming positive feedback about our physiotherapists and the benefits it makes to our clients' lives.

At what point do you recommend considering in-home care?

A: If you’re finding daily tasks, such as showering, dressing and meal preparation difficult. Also signs of short-term memory loss is often when people start to reach out, because of safety concerns of their family member. Older people need to talk to their families early on about what they’d like to do once they can no longer live without some form of in-home support, and plan accordingly.

Cars and Character

127 April 2024
Most folks’ first cars are usually more of a reflection of finances – or lack of – though with time what car we choose might just mirror our character.

WORDS

Many – men especially – service their cars more often than they get checkups at their GP, and with it being the second-most expensive thing most of us will ever likely buy, it’s little wonder. And while some might baulk at the notion of such vanity, our choice of vehicle tells the world something about our values, interests, or lifestyles. Verve examines what it all means...

Sports Cars

This choice is said to reflect a penchant for excitement and recognition, as these are vehicles that draw attention (occasionally by the police and thieves – sports cars, especially red ones, are more likely to be pulled over or stolen). Owners epitomise energy, impulsiveness, and a fast-paced lifestyle. Enthusiasts of sports cars prioritise performance, speed, and style, embodying a thrill-seeking persona. “Ferraris inspire genuine awe,” writes former Top Gear Australia editor, Stepehen Corby, for Money Magazine , “and there are few things more fun than telling an excited punter that they can sit in it if they like…”

Mid-size Sedans

A study by UC Davis found drivers of sedans to have “no distinct travel attitude”, which some might label ‘dull’, but is more representative of a pragmatic, no-nonsense approach to life. Sedans are likely bought for safety rather than stylistic reasons – most commonly by high-earning females and single dads – prioritising family needs like outings with kids, along with everyday practicalities such as shopping and school runs. For a long time, sedans were the most popular body style in the world, and for good reason.

SUVs

The most maligned of cars, yet SUVs now account for nearly half of global car sales. The problem is that they’re rarely used for their intended purpose (“Do people need two-and-

a-half-tonne vehicles to take their children to school,” asks the European Transport Safety Council), taking up more space on city streets while using more fuel and kicking out a disproportionate amount of fumes. Paradoxically, SUV drivers often travel the shortest distances compared to others. These drivers are said to value safety, space, and versatility. Some do also have an active lifestyle and ensure there’s plenty of mud in those treads!

Pickup Trucks

Often lumped in with SUV drivers, but pickup truck drivers are more likely to need their vehicle for work purposes. Research has shown these drivers to put in the hours and be folk that like to get things done. They’re more likely to live out in the sticks. Tailgating is the second most common cause of accidents in New Zealand and, rightly or wrongly, utes are often viewed as the worst offender of this.

Luxury Cars

These owners tend to be older, highly educated, and, of course, affluent. Luxury car drivers embody refinement, elegance, and status, their ride a way of showcasing their achievements as successful professionals or entrepreneurs. They value comfort and sophistication, appreciating premium features and craftsmanship. Psychologically, they're independent, profitoriented achievers. Luxury car ownership represents a lifestyle choice, reflecting not just a mode of transportation but a statement of success and indulgence, regardless of practicality or fuel economy – which is a good job as they’re more likely to drive longer distances, too.

Compact Cars

Expect to find a sensible, budget-conscious personality, behind the wheel of a compact car. Sustainability and eco-

128

friendliness are key values, too, and according to that UC Davis study, compact car drivers tend to be dwell in higher density neighbourhoods where fuel efficiency and space are paramount. Unlike luxury car drivers, they're not typically described as workaholics or status seekers; their focus lies in reducing their carbon footprint and securing convenient parking!

Minivans

Minivan owners are the least likely to exhibit road rage! As well as their calm driving, these community-minded, practical souls are more likely to embark on long distance travel, live in the suburbs, and of course, be nominated for carpool duties!

“These cars show that you define yourself by your relationship to children and the more kids are in your car, the better you feel about yourself,” Susan M Henney, professor of psychology at the University of Houston-Downtown, tells Reader’s Digest. “It tells the world, ‘I’m valued and important’.”

Classic Cars

Enthusiasts who collect classic cars often have a deep appreciation for automotive history, craftsmanship, and nostalgia. They may be sentimental types who also enjoy the restoration process. Though collectors are typically middleaged and over, ownership is becoming more popular among

Millennials and Gen-Z – and they’re also the generations most likely to rent them. More women too are becoming classic car owners.

Electric and Hybrid Cars

Among the fastest growing groups on the list, the most obvious thing to say about these drivers is that they’re environmentally conscious – electric cars emit 80% less CO2 than their petrol counterparts, while hybrids halve the pollution. As well as a commitment to reducing their carbon footprint and minimising their impact on the planet, these owners might also harbour appreciation of all the tech and innovation that powers their rides.

Campervans and RVs

While campervans are more likely to be driven by younger generations, and RVs by their parents or even grandparents, they all share a sense of adventure and a love for the open road. They value flexibility and spontaneity, preferring to travel on their own schedule and discover new places off the beaten path. Many might have a DIY spirit, enjoying customising and renovating their vans, while also being social types who enjoy connecting with fellow travellers and sharing stories, beers, and marshmallows around the campfire.

IN COLOUR

It’s not just about the badge, the colour of our car paints a picture of our personality too…

Black: associated with luxury and elegance, sophisticated black signifies the finer things in life, reminiscent of presidential motorcades and diplomatic vehicles. Plus, it’s easier to keep clean!

Grey and silver: sensible choices that convey practicality. Expect owners of grey cars to be lower maintenance and view their vehicle as predominantly functional, while silver hints at a little rebellious bling.

Gold: not a common choice, but one that is said to represent the traditional and conservative. Though these drivers like a little glamour, they don’t particularly enjoy trying new things.

White: this choice is said to be the go-to for highly organised folk who strive for high status. It’s a fresh and modern colour option – just like the owner!

Yellow: little surprise that those who opt for yellow are likely blessed with an optimistic, sunny nature, full of energy and humour, and very laid back.

Red: cliched it may be, but fans of red cars are often sensual souls who like to be the centre of attention. They’re also dynamic, driven, and confident.

Blue: calm, confident and loyal, blue car drivers are usually ones you can trust. A practical and positive colour choice, the darker the blue, the more ‘professional’ the impression it gives.

Green: “Geniuses pick green,” so goes the famous De Niro line in Meet the Parents So do down-to-earth, understated types who appreciate nature and the environment.

Pink: there’s no way you can pick pink – the least common car colour out there – without meaning to tell the world that you’re bright, bold and bubbly… and don’t mind getting stared at! 130

WORDS

JILL & RICHARD SIMPSON

132
When Richard and I first arrived at Fishermans Bay, we were a budding couple with two families, starting our journey in another place.

The surroundings were untamed yet captivating, with a weathered cottage dating back almost a century. Sharing it with family and friends, we forged precious memories exploring the sprawling farmland and picturesque bays during long summer days.

Our intention was to make this rugged terrain our permanent abode. In 2005, we embarked on a transformation, redesigning the house and adding a new extension to craft the cozy haven we now call home. While a small patch

of garden graced the immediate surroundings, much of it was enveloped by the new construction, leaving me with a blank canvas to cautiously cultivate.

Initially, there were no grand plans for an expansive garden, despite my background in designing landscapes for others. Our focus was on tending to the farm and preserving the natural beauty of the two bays below, where we worked tirelessly to reclaim land from the grasp of invasive gorse.

133 April 2024

However, with a lifelong passion for gardening, I couldn't resist the urge to extend our green sanctuary. As the livestock facilities were relocated uphill, I seized the opportunity to incorporate farm machinery into shaping the landscape. The steep terrain demanded careful maneuvering, with each year witnessing the gradual expansion of the garden, a testament to the organic evolution common to farm gardens.

What began as a personal endeavor between family and farm duties soon garnered attention from gardening enthusiasts. Initially hosting garden clubs, we eventually joined the New Zealand Gardens Trust, opening our doors to visitors from near and far. Embracing social media, particularly Instagram, allowed us to showcase our garden to a global audience, attracting photographers and earning features in publications worldwide.

Art & About 134

Managing the increasing influx of visitors has been a learning curve, requiring us to balance hospitality with the demands of maintaining the garden. While occasional assistance has been enlisted, the bulk of the work remains in my hands, with periodic aid from fellow gardeners like Helen, whose expertise enriched our space.

Despite the perpetual battle against weeds and the challenges posed by wind and wildlife, the joy of gardening has been our driving force. It's a privilege to cultivate beauty amidst such a stunning backdrop, learning from both the land and the global community of gardeners.

Each year brings opportunities for renewal and reinvention, with the garden serving as a canvas for dreams to flourish, reminding us that in the world of gardening, perseverance and imagination are the seeds of success.

Horoscopes

You’re mentally adventurous, ready and willing to learn into ‘mind expansion’, and less attached to your values. You’re forced to begin seeing others as separate individuals, and to improve the manner in which you relate to, and with, others. Make sure that you’re engaging in due diligence regarding your body and health through this period, as it will be all too easy to forget those needs and slide into physical difficulties.

You might find that inner and personal experiences are more important to you than more worldly ones during this cycle. You might recycle a fond old memory into a new chapter in your career, no matter how far you've come since. How you entertain yourself, how you have fun, and issues surrounding how you manage your ego are now coming up for inspection.

Furthering your personal ambitions and interests comes more easily during this cycle. At times, you may feel like the sky is the limit. Ideals and spiritual goals that you may have taken for granted or worked with for many years might suddenly seem superficial or not particularly useful anymore. This is a cycle in which you need to define, understand, and crystallise your significant relationships with others.

You might consider finetuning your talents and skills with higher education or experience during this cycle. You might have the opportunity to reach a broader audience and share your ideas and projects with more people. You’ll likely make significant changes to your relationships, leave behind a romance, or strengthen your stance on how you will derive pleasure from life.

You may be laying groundwork and building a long-term project that eventually has much significance in your life. The amount of satisfaction you are deriving from your relationship, the quality of the relationship itself, and how you view your partner are all things that you’re now examining. Disillusionment is a possibility as you begin to see your relationship without rose-coloured glasses.

VIRGO

23 August –

22 September

LIBRA

23 September –

22 October

You need to make a few changes in your life, and you now have the courage and drive to do so. Just be careful that you recognise the areas of your life that are dear to your heart. New learning experiences as well as life experiences like travel, adventuring, and contacts with others of a vastly different culture are likely to emerge.

CAPRICORN

22 December –

19 January

SCORPIO

23 October –

21 November

You will learn through the course of this period to depend on yourself and to take pride in yourself for what you really are, not only how others see you. Romantic relationships might be tested during this time. You might feel overwhelming pressure coming from casual love affairs, or the flaws in an existing romance seem to be screaming out at you.

AQUARIUS

20 January –

18 February

You may find new and exciting channels for self-expression. You want to know what you can do, in terms of raw potential, in real terms. Your mind is on your purpose or mission in life, and your desire for success is stronger than ever. Your potential is called up for inspection. You are called to express your worth and calibre in measurable, concrete ways.

SAGITTARIUS

22 November –

21 December

If you work hard at self-improvement, you will be one step closer to knowing where you are headed, and you will have re-built faith in yourself and your beliefs. A shaky feeling that causes you to sputter and avoid risks will be replaced with a more mature attitude towards adventure and facing the unknown. You are worth something, and you deserve compensation for what you do.

PISCES

19 February –

20 March

You have a more mature grasp of your own capabilities, you project a more responsible, perhaps serious, and selfassured personality to others. You are especially open to receiving grounded, practical advice, and benefit from humbly learning from others. You are likely to discover your true needs from partnerships, as well as what you can realistically give to a partner. You may take special joy in sharing a common cause or ideals with others.

This month brings a fair measure of reality and objectivity, so that whatever relationships you have will be defined and re-defined. Relationships are seen now as serious things. Responsibilities to partners, the need to compromise, and the realities of the needs of others, become clear. Your spiritual world, compassion, private life, and tolerance expand and grow. Matters from the past are magnified in your life now.

It’s time to be more conservative with your money, and feel more accomplished in so doing. You will learn to love and take pride in yourself. Looking outside of yourself for ego strokes, whether through romance or other such ‘applause’ may prove to be fruitless. You might encounter opposition or resistance to your personal plans and goals, which forces you to re-evaluate your current projects or commitments.

GIRL OF THE MOUNTAINS

In 1946, Stella is hired as a mountain guide in the Southern Alps, an unconventional career for a woman but one that she loves. But a tragedy will shatter her dreams. In 2019, journalist Kate disappears from her life, searching for the truth after her grandmother’s deathbed confession. Inspired by real-life history, this is a multi-layered novel as the central women strive for truth and freedom.

THE WOMEN

Kristin Hannah

Exploring the Vietnam War from a female perspective, ‘Frankie’ McGrath impulsively signs up to join the Army Nurse Corps to follow her beloved brother to Vietnam. Nothing prepares her for the cruel war she is thrust into or her return home afterwards. Brutal but beautiful, breathtaking and insightful, it sensitively examines this infamous war, shining a light on the women who served in it.
