Despite the economic war on Venezuela staged by the country’s U.S.-backed far-right and the ongoing aggressions by Washington, President Nicolas Maduro has succeeded in reducing extreme poverty to about 5.6 percent, building hundreds of thousands of homes for low-income families, maintaining unemployment below 5.5 percent, and fending off destabilization efforts. His government also recently successfully thwarted a coup that was being planned by the Venezuelan right-wing opposition with assistance from Washington. Under Maduro, crime in Venezuela has been reduced, inequality has diminished and social spending has increased considerably. Also, human rights has improved in the country, while corruption and impunity have been confronted. Maduro enjoys a high-level of support from Venezuelans, as well as from international organizations and nations around the world. April 14th , 2015 marks two years since his democratic victory.

In four years, 40% of Venezuela's population will live in Housing Mission urban developments Caracas, 16 Abr. AVN.By 2019, 40% of Venezuela's population will live in urban developments of the Great Housing Mission Venezuela, said on Wednesday Vice President for Planning and Knowledge, Ricardo Menendez, at the meeting with housing and urban planners to develop a plan to rethink the cities that will be formed with new developments in the context of socialist values and principles such as the well-living, productive work, free access to education, health and recreation.

"A working group has been set up between Vice President of Territorial Development and Vice President of Planning and Knowledge because by 2019 we will have 40% of the population living in urbanisms of the Great Housing Mission Venezuela and we have a golden opportunity regarding the urban transformation and concept of city redesign," explained Menendez at the end of Socialist City Forum held in Caracas, which was also attended by Housing Minister Ricardo Molina, and Ecosocialism and Water Minister Guillermo Barreto.

He said that this initiative will allow the people and Government to own the definition of city, that is "to plan how our cities, public spaces, mechanisms of internal mobilization will be, for us not to suffer for the perverse effect of traffic jam as a result of capitalism."

He stressed that subsequently it will be held a seminar "to bring everything we have achieved so far and make it a new methodological doctrine for the creation of the socialist city."

Menendez said that guests from other countries will be brought to see what has been done in housing in Venezuela and how it continues to deepen through the Bolivarian Revolution.

Guests are part of the Network of Intellectuals, Artists and Social Movements in Defense of Humanity who are planners, engineers, architects and geographers.

The vice president said that the creation of a socialist city involves the proper use of public space, progress in the productive sector, better equipment for the country to meet its own needs and ensure adequate infrastructure for the development of the country.

"Socialist City is not an abstract issue, it is a way to organize ourselves to get a better level of life quality," he said.

Caracas, 17 Abr. AVN.The representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Venezuela, Marcelo Resende de Sousa, said on April 16th, 2015 that Venezuela is no longer part of the countries suffering from hunger in the world, thanks the food security and nutrition policies carried out by the Bolivarian government. "Venezuela until recently was part of the world hunger map, but today I announce, on behalf of the FAO, Venezuela is no longer in the map of world hunger".

Bicentenario, among others, through which access to products of the basic basket is guaranteed to Venezuelan people at fair prices, as well as the relaunch of urban agriculture.

Resende de Sousa also said that Venezuela has a number of public policies that ensure food security and sovereignty, including the public food supply network such as subsidized food market Mercal, food producer and distributor Pdval and supermarkets

Venezuela received recognition from FAO in 2012, for being one of the countries that has contributed most to eradicate hunger and extreme poverty.

He mentioned that according to FAO's map of hunger, there are over 860 million people in the world at risk of not having enough food to eat. He considered that to end this situation it is necessary to combat social inequality and increase the nation's political commitment to the issue of hunger.

Likewise, in 2013 the oil country was granted another

recognition for being, according toestimates by the organization, in the group of 15 countries (including Cuba, Nicaragua, Guyana, Peru, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil) that have made exceptional progress by reducing undernourishment from 13.5% in the period 1990-1992, to less than 5%, during the period 2010-2012.

In October 2014 it was announced a new recognition by FAO, specifically directed to Food Mission, an initiative that promotes the social programs implemented by the Venezuelan Government with special activities of food distribution for the people at fair prices.

FAO and Venezuela to create SANA:

a new cooperation program to Eradicate Hunger

According to FAO, Latin America and the Caribbean have reached a unique level thanks to the political commitment with the fight against hunger.

“The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States(CELAC) launched a hunger eradication plan on January, which mean that food security reached a very important level on the regional agenda”, said Benitez.

The cooperation program for food sovereignty in Latin American and the Caribbean (SANA) is a cooperation project created by Venezuela and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) aimed at struggling against hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean.

SANA will be introduced in the 21 countries belongs to the energy cooperation Petrocaribe and the ALBA (the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of our America).

Venezuela gave $12 million to support the project.

“Venezuela is a key partner in numerous south-south cooperation initiatives to eradicate hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean,” said Raúl Benitez, FAO¨s regional representative.

SANA will be based on three goals. First, the project will give total support to the most important regional projects to eradicate hunger, such as Plan to eradicate poverty and Hunger “Hugo Chávez” and the Celac´s Plan for Food Security Nutrition and Hunger Eradication.

SANA will also strength socials movements; to reach it, the project will train farm leaders and groups that will be able to proposed food security politics.

Project Sana will also work together with agricultural and peasant families’ organizations to create market spaces where food can be traded.

UNASUR Marks its 8th Anniversary

The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) was created on April 17th, 2007, on the Margarita Island, Venezuela, proposed by former Venezuelan president, Hugo Chรกvez, as a regional integration bloc.

The objective is to build a space for cultural, economic, social and political union, by respecting the reality of each country.

The challenges are to eradicate poverty, reach social inclusion and strengthen democracies.

On April 17th, 2007, the heads of state of South America baptized the project which originally born in Cuzco, Peru, as the Union of South Nations and they decided the creation of a Permanent Secretariat that would operate in the Middle of the World (Quito, Ecuador). A year later, UNASUR was formally created by signing on the constitutive treaty which comes into force in 2011.

UNASUR is celebrating 8th anniversary today as a regional bloc for the political, social, economic and cultural integration of South America.

Several activities will be held in UNASUR headquarters in Quito, Brazil. President Rafael Correa will participate in the events.
