Kenya 2022 oil plan back on track as UK firm takes up pipeline design

Head of the Asian Africa Conference Museum in Indonesia, Meinarti Fauzi said, that this year the series of the event takes the theme “Beyond The Bandung Spirit” which was the manifestation of the spirit of ten points outputs from the conference in Bandung to the young generation.

The Afro-Asian Conference of Bandung, Indonesia, held on the 24th April 1955, considered as the most immediate antecedent on the road towards the creation of the NAM, brought together 29 Heads of State and Government from the first postcolonial generation of leaders from the two continents, with the aim of identifying and evaluating the global problems of the moment, and where the "Ten Principles of Bandung" were adopted, considered the basic foundations of the movement to govern relations between large and small nations.

On the occasion of 63rd Anniversary of the Conference of Bandung, the Ten Principles of Bandung remain fully valid in the current international situation, which shows signs of a return to the context of the Cold War in which they were adopted, and which the NAM promotes as ideological independence banners, sources to consolidate the development of the South-South cooperation and anti-imperialist sentiment that identifies the origin, permanence and essence of the Movement.

The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in the exercise of the Presidency of the NAM, reaffirms its commitment to the ideals, principles and founding purposes of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries and those enshrined in the UN Charter, at the same time that it expresses its firm determination to deepen the cause for the defence of the sovereignty, the self-determination of the Peoples, non-intervention in internal affairs, respect for international law and world peace. www.mppre.gob.ve

Venezuela Presidential Elections: President Maduro has 51% of voter intention in Venezuelan race: Survey

The study shows that 71 percent of Venezuelans believe Nicolas Maduro will win the elections, regardless of affiliation or political leaning.

Venezuelan consultancy Hinterlaces reported Sunday that in its most recent poll data show Nicolas Maduro, the presidential candidate for the Frente Amplio de la Patria coalition, as the winner of the upcoming May 20 elections with 51 percent of the vote.

The study also reveals that 71 percent of Venezuelans believe that the Venezuelan president will win the elections, regardless of affiliation or political leaning, while 18 percent said Henri Falcon, the candidate for Advanced Progress and Movement to Socialism candidate.

Meanwhile 6 percent indicated that the winner will be the candidate of the Hope for Change Javier Bertucci. The rest 5 percent of the respondents did not know or say who they thought would be the winner. Also none of the people interviewed named the other presidential candidates, Reinaldo Quijada and Luis Alejandro Ratti.

Responding to the question: "if the presidential elections were held in Venezuela this Sunday, who would you vote for?" the surveyed said 51 percent would vote for Nicolas Maduro; 28 percent for Henri FalcĂłn; 16 percent for Javier Bertucci; and 5 percent responded that they will not vote for any of the postulates.

The presidential elections in Venezuela take place as Venezuela suffers a coordinated economic and political interference led by the United States and its regional allies in Latin America.

Faced with this situation Maduro has called for defending the economic sovereignty of the country and consolidating the social missions and programs for protection of the people.

For its part, the National Electoral Council (CNE) conducted five audits for the May elections and the operation of the electoral system has been endorsed by all technicians of the political parties. who confirmed the "transparency and strength of the system.� www.telesurtv.net

North-South Korea summit: Kim Jong Un shakes hands with Moon Jae-In

On 29th April, North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean president Moon Jae-in met for the first time, pledging a new era of friendship between the two countries.

It was more than a decade since the last inter-Korean summit and this meeting in the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) that has divided the two nations since the end of the Korean War in 1953 did not disappoint. The leaders agreed to work towards ending a war, and signed an agreement to work towards the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, with some genuinely historical moments and some jaw-dropping ad-libbing, along with hugs and smiles aplenty.

"The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolรกs Maduro Moros, on behalf of the Government and the Venezuelan people, congratulates the President of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Kim Jong Un, and the President of the Republic of Korea, Moon Jae- in, for the celebration of the Third Bilateral Summit between both countries, convinced that this historic meeting will contribute to the realization of a lasting peace in the peninsula, in the region and in the world, on the principles of dialogue and mutual respect, demonstrating the ability of peoples to solve their own affairs, without external interference.

INDEPENDENCE DAY

South Africa celebrated it’s Independence Day (Freedom Day) on 27th April, marking the anniversary of the day in 1994 when the country held its first ever all-race, democratic election, ending decades of sanctioned racial oppression under the apartheid system.

Freedom Day is significant because it "marks the end of over three hundred years of colonialism, segregation and white minority rule and the establishment of a new democratic government led by Nelson Mandela and a new state subject to a new constitution."

The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro Moros, on behalf of the Government and the Venezuelan People, congratulates the President of the Republic of South Africa, his Government and the South African People, for the celebration of Freedom Day. From the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, we remember with this emblematic date when the African National Congress, together with the Communist Party of South Africa and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), managed to defeat the opprobrious regime of apartheid the electoral way, hand in hand with the indisputable world leader Nelson Mandela.

Venezuela and South Africa converge in the defense of the Legacy of two giants: Nelson Mandela and Hugo Chávez, who forged the sovereignty, independence and freedom of their People.

The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reiterates its independence and sovereign greetings to the entire South African People and Government, and is proud to work together with South Africa for peace, noninterference in the internal affairs of States and the sovereignty of the nations. www.mppre.gob.ve

Tanzania Union Day

On April 26, 1964, the East African countries of Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the United Republic of Tanzania.

Union Day celebrates this merger.

The mainland section of modern Tanzania, Tanganyika, was colonised by Germany during the late 1800’s and became the bulk of German East Africa. But German control soon ended after Germany’s defeat in World War I, and Tanganyika became a part of the British Empire. Zanzibar was controlled by the Arab Kingdom of Oman for a long time, but it also became a British “protectorate”, with its very own sultan. Zanzibar and Pemba was long a separate colony.

Tanganyika escaped from British rule in 1961, but Zanzibar did not become independent until two years later, in 1963. The unification of the two former British colonies was blocked by the existence of the Zanzibar sultanate. But the sultan was overthrown in a coup in 1964, which however, led to a Communist government being installed in its place. Despite the Communist control in Zanzibar, the island nation united with Tanganyika only a few months after the fall of the sultanate. The name “Tanzania” combines the first syllable of the names of the two formerly separate states and symbolises national unity.

Union Day is a time of a large parade held in the capital city of Dar es Salaam where patriotic speeches by Dignitaries from nearby countries, politicians, parades by school children and various public and private organisations join Tanzanian government officials in these festivities.

On behalf of President Maduro and the people of Venezuela, The foreign Affairs Ministry of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela congratulates the people of Tanzania as they celebrate the 54th Anniversary of the United Republic of Tanzania.

Over the past decades, Tanzania and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela have been good friends with close working relations. By working collaboratively, we have made important progress, and we look forward to our continued efforts to meet the challenges of a new year.

Kenya 2022 oil plan back on track as UK firm takes up pipeline design

“The budget has been cut from the original $1.7 million to $290,000. This means that some activities for early oil will not take place,” Mr Kamau told the Parliamentary Committee on Energy. The early oil exports were to be followed by commercial production and exports after the Mombasa-Lamu Lokichar crude oil pipeline is completed in 2021.

Kenya has picked Wood Group Plc, a British company, to design its oil pipeline to transport crude from fields in Lokichar, Turkana County in the north to the port of Lamu on the Coast.

The announcement last week puts the oil export plan back on track towards commercial production in 2021/22. Kenya plans to build the 892-kilometre pipeline to pump the discovered commercial oil reserves in the Lokichar basin. The project cost is estimated at $2 billion.

For Uganda, US-based firm Gulf Interstate Engineering completed the Feed for its joint venture with Tanzania at the end of last year. The 1,445km export pipeline project is expected to move oil from Kabaale to the Chongoleani peninsula in Tanzania’s Indian Ocean coast.

Petroleum and Mining Principal Secretary Andrew Kamau said the design work would take eight months. This will then be expected to inform the specifications of the pipeline as well as the actual cost. The EastAfrican understands that the British firm, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange, was awarded the design contract on 30th April. In January, Kenya invited bids for the front end engineering design (Feed) — which helps set the technical requirements for the line — from eight firms it had shortlisted before narrowing it down to two.

The $3.5 billion joint venture will see an insulated 24-inch pipeline buried 1-2 metres with an electrical heat tracing system, associated ground facilities and a marine storage terminal with export facilities near Tanga.

In September 2017, Standard Bank, a joint financial adviser with Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp and Imperial Bank of China (IBC), said that it planned to raise $3 billion by June this year to fund the pipeline’s construction, as Uganda angles to start its oil production in 2020.

“We selected the eight firms from a pool of contractors that had submitted applications to be prequalified to undertake the Feed after we sent out a request for expression of interest in 2016,” said Mr Kamau. The environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) started last month as planned, putting into motion the country’s push to have its own pipeline after the original plan for a joint project with Uganda flopped when Kampala looked South to Tanzania in 2017. “The firm has been tasked with helping with project construction specifications, formulating a plan for the pipeline project execution, coming up with a workable implementation schedule and writing bid documents to help Kenya select a contractor to develop the pipeline,” The EastAfrican was told.

Patrick Mweheire, Standard Bank Uganda’s CEO said the plan was to use a mix of debt and loans from export credit agencies to fund the project. Uganda and Tanzania, together with the oil firms have been working on the financing blueprint, which will see them raise 70 per cent of the project’s total costs from international lenders.

The remaining 30 per cent capital will be raised through equity by the France’s Total, Anglo-Irish Tullow, China’s Cnooc and JV partners.

The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation and Uganda National Oil Company — through its subsidiary, the Uganda National Pipeline Company will also be part of the equity fundraising move.

Kenya expects the construction works on the pipeline to start once the designs are complete, and take two years to be completed. The new development seems to push further the early Oil Pilot Scheme in which the government was planning to move 2,000 barrels a day by truck from Lokichar to the Mombasa port.
