Since launching VKZ Magazine last fall, we have shared uplifting stories, from local heroes making a difference in their neighborhoods to young entrepreneurs turning their dreams into reality
In this issue, we are particularly excited to focus on the significance of youth sports. Whether it’s learning how to persevere through challenges, the importance of collaboration, or the value of hard work, these kids show how youth sports can provide a foundation for success both on and off the field.
I hope you’ll be inspired by the stories of young athletes, entrepreneurs building their futures, and everyday heroes making a difference and know that there is opportunity and community for you with VKZ Let’s keep in touch! Kim@vegaskidszone.com.

AAA encourages all caregivers to have car seats inspected by certified car seat technicians
As parents and caregivers, we all want to protect our children However, even with the best intentions, car seat safety can often be overlooked
According to the National Digital Car Seat Check database, only one in four car seats are correctly installed This statistic aligns with the findings from a consumer survey done by AAA Nevada and the National Safety Council, that revealed only one in five caretakers seek expert help for car seat installation, something AAA offers at no charge, by way of certified employee technicians at many of their local offices
Top Car Seat Mistakes to Avoid Safety experts have identified three common mistakes to avoid:
1.The Wiggle Test. If your car seat moves around too much, it’s probably not installed securely A properly installed seat should remain stable with minimal movement when tested A loose seat may fail to protect a child during a collision
2.The Overlooked Strap. For forward-facing seats, an additional strap, known as the tether, is crucial The tether prevents the seat from tilting forward in a crash, which significantly reduces the risk of head and neck in-
juries Unfortunately, many caregivers forget to use it
3.The Pinch Check. When securing your child in the seat, ensure the harness straps are snug. A good rule of thumb? Use your thumb! A simple way to test this is by trying to pinch the strap material at armpit level If you can pinch any excess, the strap is too loose. If you can’t it’s likely tight enough
The fact that you bought a car seat means you want the best for the child you care for Making sure it’s installed correctly can help you reach that goal 120,000 children were injured in car crashes in 2022, a properly installed car seat is essential to keeping kids safe
Another common issue is transitioning children to different car seat types prematurely Research shows that 25 percent of children are placed in booster seats too early, and 90 percent of kids using a regular (lap and shoulder) seat belt would be better protected in a booster seat or forward-facing car seat
Boosting Your Car Seat Knowledge
To further educate parents and caregivers, free resources like the “Car Seat Basics” online course is available The comprehensive program, developed by the National Safety Council in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, covers every stage of child passenger safety, from rear-facing seats to the transition to seat belts.
Ensuring your child is in the right seat and that it’s installed correctly is critical to their safety on the road Taking the time to double-check your car seat setup could make a lifesaving difference

Sylvan’s Reading Program Can Help Your Child Catch Up, Soar and Fall in Love with Reading
In today's fast-paced world, where screens often dominate our children’s attention, fostering a love for reading can seem like a daunting task. However, whether your child is struggling to keep up with their peers or is already reading ahead of their grade level, a well-structured reading program can make all the difference. Sylvan’s program not only help kids catch up academically but also allow advanced readers to soar to new heights while instilling a lifelong love of reading.
For children who find reading challenging, a reading program offers tailored support to bridge the gap Early intervention is key to preventing long-term academic struggles A quality reading program will assess your child’s current reading level and identify specific areas where they need support, such as phonics, comprehension or vocabulary.
Through targeted exercises and consistent practice, these programs can help your child build confidence and improve their reading skills. As they start to see progress, their attitude toward reading often shifts from frustration to pride.
"The Sylvan teen reading program has been a game-changer for our family,” said Mary Perlotta “The personalized approach and supportive environment made all the difference. We've seen such a positive transformation in both their confidence and academic performance. Highly recommend it to any parent looking to give their teen a boost!"
Advanced readers often crave more complex material and are eager to explore a wider range of genres and topics. Sylvan’s program introduces kids to new authors, advanced vocabulary and critical thinking exercises that deepen their understanding of texts.
Youth sports teaches the value of hard work and determination in reaching your goals. It can also change your life.

One of the most valuable aspects of homeschooling is the ability to explore a wide range of interests and activities.
As a new homeschooling mom, I was terrified. How were we going to figre out what to teach and where to go to socialize and find friends? The wealth of local resources was surprising and the community welcoming Relief is an understatement After talking to so many new homeschool families, I realized we all started out a little terriffied, needlessly so I started VKZ to help more families easily find resources that could help their child and their family
Beyond the customized curriculum and flexible schedules, what truly enriches the homeschool experience is the sense of community fostered through classes, meetups, and events.
These opportunities support academic growth and nurture friendships, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose among kids and homeschooling families
Regular meetups are the lifeblood of a strong homeschool community You can get a list of the latest meetups, classes and activiities at each VKZ event, such as the Sept 14 Kidpreneur Market and Back-to-Homeschool mini fair. Come and explore the Shop-andSwap!

Born and raised in Maryland, Diana Edelman moved to Las Vegas in 2005 to pursue a career in public relations. After several years in the industry, she made a bold decision in 2010 to leave her PR career behind and start a travel blog. This new venture led her to solo backpack through Europe and parts of Africa. Upon returning to the U.S., she moved back to Las Vegas, where she became the director of communications for a prominent restaurant group with properties on The Strip and in Los Angeles.
In 2012, she embarked on a new adventure, relocating to Chiang Mai, Thailand, after being offered a job that aligned with her passion for animal welfare. Her work involved raising awareness about the realities of Asian elephants in tourism. Over the nearly three years she spent there, she handled social media and PR for a well-known sanctuary, participated in undercover missions to understand human-elephant conflicts across Southeast Asia and even took part in a few elephant rescues.
By 2015, she found herself living in London, and shortly after, she moved to Madrid, Spain. In 2016, she returned to Las Vegas and channeled her diverse experiences into launching Vegans, Baby.
Why did you start Vegans, Baby?
I wanted to continue my work helping animals but knew I needed to find a different avenue to do so. So, I decided I would make change by promoting vegan food in Las Vegas and would also hold myself accountable It was and is my goal to make vegan life approachable and accessible.

What is your favorite thing to cook at home?
I've been on a kick of making pasta I get the Trader Joe's frozen penne, add in a block of tempeh, broccoli and their pesto and make a big bowl.
What is your favorite local event or festival?
It used to be Life is Beautiful I had the privilege to curate the vegan options for a couple of years, and it was always the most fun to see the city come together. I haven't had a chance to go, but Plant Based Into markets are so high on my list.

When local substitute teacher Andrew Plotkin was told “no” at every turn, it might be best to say it simply didn’t register.
“There was so much food being thrown out at each school I (subbed) at,” said Plotkin, founder of The Should Project. “It was hard to watch when there are so many people in Las Vegas and across the country dealing with food insecurity”
His attempts to deliver the food to kids in need were met with shrugs and defeated head shakes. The frustration for this gregarious substitute teacher was in the simple math.
“I saw a big problem but realized the missing pieces weren't insurmountable,”
Plotkin said, noting the main issue was having a place to store food and delivery volunteers “When I realized that was all that was missing, I couldn't ignore it”
Lucky for thousands of local kids, he didn’t He “email bombed” and called any and all he thought could help.

This summer was anything but ordinary for me. As a 10-year-old living in Las Vegas, I was immersed in all types of exciting events and unforgettable experiences. From conducting my first interview and writing my first magazine article to outdoor adventures, my summer was full of adventure.
I kicked off my summer of adventure at the YMCA Summer Camp, where I embarked on a journey of friendship and discovery. This was my second summer at camp, so I was excited to see old friends and make new ones. Each day was a whirlwind of activities, from swimming and basketball to arts and crafts. By the end of camp, I had new friends and a collection of cool memories.

What to do with Kids in Las Vegas Based on Their Interests
One of the highlights of my summer was attending the Raiders’ first open practice of the season. The atmosphere was electric as fans filled the stands, eagerly watching their favorite players prepare for the upcoming games. It was a fantastic experience that deepened my love for football and gave me a glimpse into the life of an NFL team.
Sports continued to play a big role in my summer when I participated in a flag football clinic hosted by the Las Vegas Force. The clinic was an awesome opportunity to improve my skills and learn new techniques from experienced coaches. I practiced my throws, catches, and defensive moves, and I had a blast playing with other kids who shared my passion for football.
I visited the Adventuredome twice, enjoying the roller coasters and arcade games. The indoor amusement park was a blast and provided endless fun.
At the Vegas Kids Zone Kidprenuer markets, I sold my Major Elements affirmation cards. It was a fantastic learning experience in entrepreneurship. I learned how to manage my money, interact with customers, and navigate the ups and downs of running a business. Meeting other young entrepreneurs and seeing their creative ideas was inspiring.
What to do with Kids in Las Vegas Based on Their Interests
The excitement didn’t stop there. I had the chance to attend an NBA Summer League game, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. The energy in the arena was electrifying, and being able to watch the players up close was incredible. The game was fast-paced and intense, and even though my favorite team didn’t win, the atmosphere and the skills on display were awe-inspiring. It made me even more passionate about basketball and eager to improve my own skills on the court.
One of the highlights of my summer was meeting Julian Newman, the basketball sensation He visited our YMCA camp for a special event, and I was thrilled beyond words. Julian was not only a fantastic player but also super friendly. Snapping a picture with him was a dream come true for me a true highlight of my summer.
As summer came to an end, I couldn’t help b experiences I had. From interviewing top pro sports events to thrilling outdoor adventures, of extraordinary. Living in Las Vegas provided that made this summer unforgettable.
I’m grateful for every adventure and lesson learned along the way With such a fantastic summer behind me, I’m already looking forward to the next one and the new adventures it will bring. For now, I’ll cherish these amazing memories and keep dreaming big.
