The Mindful Momma Redefining Strength: Beyond the Myths of Weakness

Music artist Cardi B recently made headlines when she announced her fourth pregnancy, with her current boyfriend NFL star Stefon Diggs.

She also revealed that her tour rehearsals will begin not long after she gives birth, proudly declaring that she “doesn’t come from weak women.”

The statement is bold, headlinegrabbing, and wrapped in a familiar script: the idea that strength means pushing through, showing up no matter what, and never letting life slow you down. It resonates because we’ve been conditioned to see endurance as the ultimate sign of power, but it also raises a deeper question worth asking; what do we really mean when we talk about strength?

For generations, women have been praised for their ability to do it all.

Work, motherhood, caregiving, hustling, “snapping back” after birth. Society applauds the mom who shows up at work two weeks postpartum, the woman who never complains about her pain, the caregiver who sacrifices everything for everyone else. But is that really strength, or is it selfdenial dressed up as power?

There’s an unspoken expectation that women prove themselves by how quickly they can return to “normal” after birth, how much they can endure without breaking, how seamlessly they can juggle endless roles. Yet the body tells another story.

Childbirth is a massive physical, emotional, and spiritual event. Recovery requires time, care, and gentleness.

True strength may not be in bouncing back but in holding boundaries, in saying “I need rest,” in allowing the body to heal fully without apology or performance. laundry while listening to your tears.

For men, the myth looks different but equally damaging.

If women are taught to equate strength with sacrifice, men are often taught that strength means invulnerability. “Men don’t cry.” “Man up.” “Be tough.” From childhood, boys learn that tears are weakness and emotions are liabilities. Yet suppressing emotions doesn’t make a man strong, it makes him disconnected. It builds walls where connection could exist, with partners, children, and even with himself. Research shows that men who express and regulate their emotions openly tend to have healthier relationships, lower stress, and greater resilience. Vulnerability, far from being weakness, actually requires immense courage. It takes strength to say, “I’m not okay.” It takes strength to let yourself be seen fully; fears, doubts, tears, and all.

When we confuse endurance with strength, the consequences are real. For women, the “strong woman” narrative can put maternal and mental health at risk. Too many mothers push their bodies before they are ready, sometimes leading to long-term complications.

They feel guilt for resting, shame for struggling, and pressure to do more when their bodies and minds are asking for less. For men, the “don’t cry” narrative can fuel mental health crisis. Bottled emotions often resurface as anger, addiction, or depression. And children raised by parents who model suppression rather than expression often inherit the same scripts, continuing the cycle.

Strength isn’t about denying what we need, it’s about honoring it. When we mislabel rest, softness, or vulnerability as “weakness,” we teach generations to run from themselves, and the cost is heavy.

So what would it look like to redefine strength? For mothers, it might mean declining an obligation to protect healing time, asking for help, or saying no to visitors. For fathers, it might mean holding a child and letting them see tears, or telling a partner, “I’m scared too,” and working through it together.

For all of us, it might mean releasing perfectionism, pausing long enough to feel, and choosing to be fully present in our own humanity. Strength is not a mask. It is not a refusal to rest, feel, or soften. Strength is presence, honesty, and alignment.

Cardi B’s words may have been meant to inspire, and in some ways they do. But perhaps the real inspiration isn’t in proving we’re “not weak” - it’s in challenging the idea that rest, emotion, and healing are weaknesses at all.

What if we stopped measuring strength by how much we can endure and started measuring it by how deeply we honor ourselves? What if strength was no longer about hiding pain, but about facing it? No longer about rushing back, but about knowing when to pause? No longer about keeping it all in, but about letting ourselves be seen? Maybe the strongest thing any of us can do is give ourselves, and each other, permission to be fully human.

The Menopause Fair Las Vegas is breaking the silence and building community, one hot flash at a time. The Menopause Fair bridges that gap by bringing together trusted experts, practical tools, products, and real conversations in one accessible, supportive space.

Attendees will be informed and empowered by an exceptional group of local businesses and experts in the field of menopause and perimenopause who will showcase their services to help provide women with local resources.

Women will walk away with actionable strategies for managing symptoms, understanding their bodies, and reclaiming their energy, health, and confidence,” she said. Ultimately, they should leave the fair knowing that menopause is not an ending, it’s a powerful new beginning to the next stage of their life.“ The Menopause Fair is designed as an inclusive and informative environment “We’re breaking the taboo around menopause,” Waugh said. “Younger women can better prepare for the transition ahead, and men (whether partners, friends, or colleagues) can gain insight to offer support and understanding. These open conversations will help to demystify menopause and reduce stigma across generations and sexes.”

“We are most excited about the opportunity to impact women throughout the valley and provide a safe space where they can learn they are not alone,” Waugh said.

“While the full activity itinerary is still coming together, our focus is on creating an empowering environment where every attendee feels supported, heard, and inspired to take charge of their health and wellness.”

Cheer Power

A Junior Raiderette’s Journey Adalyn Rose, 10, has a schedule as sparkly as her uniform.

Discovering the Raideretts Adalyn’s path to the field started in a cheer class.

“I took a cheer class from Ms. Katsura,” she said, “and she told my mom about the Junior Raiderettes program.”

Her mom, Marce, immediately noticed the program’s impact. “The Junior Raiderettes don’t just teach cheerleading,” she said. “They focus on positive self-esteem, supporting others, and a real tradition of sisterhood. That was exactly what I wanted for Adalyn.”

Lessons in Confidence The program has helped Adalyn discover her own strength.

“If we’re always confident, we can always get things done,” she says firmly.

Adie has watched that confidence grow. “On and off the field, Adalyn has become more self-assured,” she says. “She loves meeting fans throughout Las Vegas and keeps a strong sense of community wherever she goes.”

Rituals and Game Day Nerves Before each performance, Adalyn keeps a few small traditions. “I have a Pin Me for good luck that goes on my bag,” she says. “And my favorite bow is like a disco ball—I wear it for practice every time.”

Stepping onto the field in front of tens of thousands is a thrill. “I get a little nervous,” she admits, “but it’s fun because I get to perform with my friends—and 65 thousand people watch us!”

Her squad also shares a pre-performance chant. “We say, ‘Hands on hips, smiles on your lips!’ and then, ‘Raiderettes on me, Raiderettes on three! One, two, three—RAIDERETTES!’” A Historic First Adalyn beams as she shares one last accomplishment. “We are the first Junior Raiderettes to perform a turn on-field,” she says. “We just made history!”

Adalyn’s journey proves that confidence, family support, and a love of community can take a young performer from a local cheer class to the roar of an NFL crowd.

Local parents and small business owners Michael Roebuck and his wife, Regina Snape-Roebuck, built Cocoa Classroom, a Black-owned, AIpowered homeschooling platform that turns lesson planning, scheduling, and curriculum tracking into a few easy clicks, no teaching certification required.

Their story took off after they were featured on Roland Martin Unfiltered.

Viewers shared the segment, praised the mission, and spread the word with genuine enthusiasm. That simple wave of support became a game-changer, bringing in more than 100 new sign-ups and proving how kindness—and a few well-placed shares—can lift a small business into the spotlight.

“I created Cocoa Classroom because I knew firsthand what it felt like to be unseen in the classroom,” Michael said. “Growing up, I was often the only Black child in school, fighting for belonging, overlooked for my achievements, and mislabeled as a problem. When my daughter was born, I vowed her story would be different. I wanted her to grow up knowing her brilliance, her beauty, and her boundless potential. Cocoa Classroom is the platform I built to make that possible, not just for my family, but for families everywhere.”

Fulfilling a Wish

Local author turns a request into reality

by Kimberley McGee For Las Vegas author and poet AA Monet, the spark for her latest book came from an unexpected source.

“My niece attended my first book signing and asked me where her book was,” Monet said.

“I thought she wanted a copy of my poetry book, but no—she wanted a book written for her.”

They conferred on the subject for sometime before her niece offered that maybe it should be about what makes her special.

Local author AA Monet has two books and is an award-winning poet.

“A light bulb instantly went off,” Monet said. “Since there isn’t just one thing that makes her special, I decided to title the book All the Things That Make You Special.”

The result is a first-of-its-kind 3-in-1 children’s book, “All the Things That Make You Special” that invites kids not only to read, but also to draw and color their own pages. .

“Engaging books in a new and refreshing way is the AA Monet stamp,” she said. but finishing a book, though, is never simple. “I don’t feel like a book I’ve written is ever fully done,” Monet said. “I determine it’s finished once it accomplishes what the intention for the book is.”

For All the Things That Make You Special, that meant adding interactive elements— and, most importantly, earning her niece’s approval.

Before venturing into children’s literature, she found joy harder to capture.

“The hardest thing for me to write was happy content, especially about love,” she said.

“I wasn’t sure how to put my artist spin on it.”

Influenced by Edgar Allan Poe and the storytelling grace of Maya Angelou, Monet continues to explore fresh terrain.

“I’ve been able to host workshops, feature on the local Clark County TV station, and have my poetry and painting displayed at Henderson City Hall,” she says.

With All the Things That Make You Special, AA Monet proves that inspiration can start with a single question from a child—and grow into something magical for readers everywhere.

Finding My Voice, Sharing My Heritage

Trained to be an opera singer, Erickson Franco returned to his Filipino roots to share with local students.

I grew up on the voices of Regine Velasquez and Lea Salonga, artists who showed me the strength and beauty of Filipino singers. Their artistry reminds me that our sound, our stories, belong on any stage.

Long days of practice and performance taught me just how powerful, and fragile, the human voice can be. I saw so many singers forcing sound or chasing an idea of what “good singing” should be that they forgot to sing with freedom.

The Sound and Spirit of OPM OPM is Filipino-created music, often in Tagalog or English, that blends Western pop with local rhythms and stories. Classics like “Anak” by Freddie Aguilar and the theater recordings of Lea Salonga, the soaring ballads of Regine Velasquez, or the rock energy of Eraserheads are all part of this vibrant landscape.

Why It Matters For Filipino American students, OPM builds a bridge to cultural identity and pride. For everyone else, it opens ears to music rarely taught in U.S. classrooms and expands the idea of what “mainstream” music can be.

In lessons, I often weave in folk songs like “Bahay Kubo,” “Leron Leron Sinta,” and “Paru-Parong Bukid” to introduce language, history, and even everyday life (Bahay Kubo is literally a vegetable song!) in a way kids instantly connect with.

And of course, performances of “Anak” never fail to move an audience.

Sharing the Stage My goal is to help every student, Filipino or not, find that same freedom and power in their own voice while discovering a musical heritage that deserves to be heard.

What inspired you to start your business?

Our mission carries forward the legacy of Sam Smith, founder of The Native Son, the city’s first Black-owned bookstore. We believe reading levels the playing field. When communities have access to books and resources, opportunities open, confidence grows, and futures are reshaped.

Beyond books, we host author meet & greets, writing workshops, and tutoring, partnering with Edu Global Inc. to provide high-quality literacy support for families.

How has being a mom shaped your business?

Being a mom, grandmother, and now a greatgrandmother has...taught me to be present in every moment, to stay consistent, and to lead with unconditional love. Those lessons guide how I show up for my team, my partners, and my community every day.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Inconsistent sales and limited community support have been tough, especially since our operation is just me and a social media manager. Handling book orders, marketing, advertising, and customer service can feel like a job for a full team. What keeps me going is staying grounded in my “why,” the impact we have as a literacy hub. I prioritize, pace myself, and celebrate small wins, always keeping the bigger vision in focus.

What guidance can you offer women launching a new venture?

Do your due diligence. Learn the standard operating procedures you’ll need and reach out to experienced business owners for guidance. Make sure you have sufficient capital and seek out grants or funding opportunities to help with sustainability.

Preparation, persistence, and community connections can make all the difference.

Turning Pain Into Purpose Protecting Nevada Families Madelyn Rhodes founded HEAR NV (Housing Education Advocacy Alliance & Resources Nevada) to empower families across the state.

What inspired you to start your business?

As a mom and a community leader, I witnessed firsthand how housing injustices and systemic failures impact families, including my own. I wanted to create an organization that doesn't just respond to crises but empowers residents with the tools, resources, and advocacy they need to stand strong. HEAR NV is about turning pain into purpose and making sure families are seen, heard, and supported.

How has being a mom shaped how you run your business?

What has been your biggest challenge?

One of my hardest moments was facing eviction violations that disregarded my rights and put me at risk of homelessness. It was emotionally and mentally exhausting. I overcame it by leaning into my faith, my children, and my community. Those experiences didn't break me. They sharpened my vision and gave me the courage to keep fighting, not just for myself but for others who feel voiceless.

What advice can you offer women thinking of starting something new?

Don't wait for the “perfect time.” Start with what you have, stay true to your mission, and let your passion carry you through the obstacles. Surround yourself with people who believe in your vision, and never underestimate your ability to turn your story into a solution for others.

A beautiful plan between two pros created a bustling business.

Owning a salon wasn’t in the plan forJennifer Moses, a 20-year industry veteran originally from Michigan.

Shauna Martin, who has spent nearly three decades in salons from Palm Springs to San Diego before settling in Las Vegas, saw ownership as the natural next step. In May 2021, they took the leap together, transforming the Renowned Kelly Cardenas salon into Style & Grace Hair Gallery, a vibrant, collaborative destination where stylists thrive and guests feel like family.

What inspired you to start your business?

Jennifer: I was blessed with the opportunity to purchase the salon I’d once moved across the country to work for. I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else because of the amazing collaborative environment we had built, so I asked our reservations manager, Shauna, to be my partner. Together we decided to buy it and make it our own.

Shauna: Working in hair salons for almost 30 years, ownership always felt like the next step. When the chance came to purchase the salon with Jenn, it was a no-brainer. We were already working together, loved our team, and wanted to keep everyone together—it was a dream come true.

As Vice President of Ladies of Las Vegas (LLV), Chelsea Atwell helps lead a powerhouse network that puts people before transactions.

What inspired Ladies of Las Vegas?

Ladies of Las Vegas was founded out of a need for genuine connection and support among women in business, especially entrepreneurs and professionals.

Too often, networking groups focus only on referrals or transactional connections. We wanted something that cut through the lack of authenticity and instead uplifts, educates, and empowers women to succeed on their own terms.

As vice president and a long-time member, I’ve seen how much courage it takes to start a business, relocate with family, or balance growth. I believe no woman should have to face those challenges without a supportive tribe.

We like to say we are a “community first, business second” organization.

What’s an example of your community in action?

During a wellness-themed workshop a member shared the stress of juggling business growth and major financial uncertainty. By the end of the session, others connected her with a mentor, offered project collaborations, and invited her to upcoming events. Within months, she not only regained confidence but saw real business growth thanks to the visibility and teamwork within LLV. It’s a perfect example of why we emphasize community as the foundation of success.

What advice do you have for a woman just starting her business?

Start small, but plan big. Build systems, financial, marketing, and time management—that can scale so you’re not reinventing the wheel. Lean on others who have walked the walk and learn from their mistakes. Las Vegas can be cutthroat, but you’ll find your tribe if you embrace a culture of abundance. Find support early. Join groups like LLV. Our founder always says, “Join everything that adds value to your life and your business.” It might feel vulnerable, but having people who believe in you keeps you motivated through setbacks.

Sky Show October is a busy time for birds in Southern Nevada.

When we wanted a clear picture of what’s happening in the bird world this month, we turned to Alex Harper, Education and Outreach Chair for the Red Rock Audubon Society. For families, this seasonal spectacle is nature’s version of a front-row concert. Kids can spot new species, listen for distinctive calls, and understand how migration connects our desert home to far-off places.

Which bird species are especially active or migrating here?

By now, most species have finished breeding and are either settling in for the winter or still passing through on their way farther south. Observers will notice more seed-eating birds arriving, taking advantage of grasses and shrubs that produce seed this time of year. A familiar newcomer is the white-crowned sparrow, often seen in small flocks around yards, parks, and shrubby areas. Water features are especially lively in October. Many ducks and geese move into the region this month and will remain through winter into spring, adding energy and sound to our wetlands and ponds.

Are there must-see hotspots or under-the-radar trails where families might spot something spectacular?

In the desert, water draws birds. The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, Clark County Wetlands Park, and Cornerstone Park in the southeast part of town provide some of the best opportunities to see waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds, and a wide range of songbirds.. Floyd Lamb, Lorenzi, Craig Ranch, Aliante, and the Springs Preserve can also be excellent places to see flycatchers, warblers, kinglets, sparrows, finches, and blackbirds. Binoculars make viewing easier, but they're not essential. Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve even loans them out to visitors.

What are some benefits kids gain from birding?

Spending time with birds brings benefits that ripple far beyond birding itself. Even 20 minutes in nature lowers stress, calms the nervous system, and improves attention. Birding teaches children patience, presence, and the rewards of slowing down to notice details. Every habitat and every day is different, which sparks curiosity and wonder. Kids who spend time in nature tend to grow into more resilient, empathetic, and kind individuals. At the same time, they gain an understanding of how the natural world works. Birds make ecosystems visible: They pollinate plants, control insects, spread seeds, and form part of the food web. Through their songs, behaviors, migrations, and nesting, they help us understand the rhythms of the natural world.

Birds are everywhere, from mountaintops to deserts to oceans, and they are easy to see and hear in ways that few other animals are. Helping kids notice them gives them both a window into life on Earth and a chance to feel connected to something larger than themselves.

Ask Your Elders Pull up a chair, kids, because our Vegas grandparents have a story or two to share about autumn long before pumpkin spice lattes and giant LED marquees.

Back then, the Strip wasn’t a canyon of screens. Grandparents remember when a single neon cowboy, the famous Vegas Vic, was the biggest light show in town. Fall meant the end of blistering summer heat, when evenings finally cooled enough for families to sit on porches and swap stories under a starry desert sky.

“October was when we finally opened the windows,” says longtime resident Maria R., who moved here in 1964. “We’d smell the creosote after a rare rain and know the season had turned.”

Kids raked tumbleweeds, she remembers, for makeshift bonfires, and neighbors gathered for chili cook-offs at dusty parks that are now bustling neighborhoods.

“Halloween felt like our own little parade,” said lifelong Las Vegan Frank Forte who remembers the small-town vibe of the city in the 1950s. “You pretty much knew every house on your trick-or-treat route. A few of the casinos handed out candy apples to kids, too.”

Bulldog on Board Four-Legged Life on Wheels

By Sam Schierholz Walter the bulldog and his buddy Milo aren’t your typical couch-potato bulldogs. They rise early to hop onto their skateboard and snowboard.

Walter’s résumé includes starring in the 2024 film Powder Pup, where he served as Mack Trucks’ mascot, appearing in a BJ’s Restaurant commercial, and featured on CW’s Dogs of the Year 2022 with his late brother George.

“When people stop and watch Walter and Milo ride their skateboards, whether it’s in a skatepark or a parking lot, they always smile and tell us how happy it makes them,” one of the bulldogs’ owners, Marcus Singel said. The pups’ owners want to spread that happiness with the rest of the world through social media, @. Now, they reach tens of thousands and sometimes hundreds of thousands of people. George was their first English bulldog, who passed away a few years ago, but he is the reason @SkateboardK9 began.

The pups are early risers, preferring to skate when the temperatures are in the 40s and 50s.

“If it’s warmer than that we cut the rides short,” Singel said. They take plenty of water breaks regardless of the temperature, and they never ride when it’s past the mid 70s.

“Walter and Milo know that when I don’t have to get ready for work that there’s a good chance it’s a skateboarding day,” Singel said, “they get so excited, that they would rather skate than eat breakfast.”

Their owners have never used treats to get them to skateboard, because the boards are their treat.

Walter and Milo’s perfect day starts with an early morning ride on their skateboards.

“In the winter we head up Mt. Charleston and they ride their snowboards,” Singel said.

After a quick salmon lunch, the dogs would settle down for a nice afternoon nap.

“After visiting gam-ma’s house, they’re ready for an evening ride under the lights of the local department store parking lot,” Singel said.

Walter loves riding in big open parking lots, where he can run and jump on his board. Milo loves skateparks best, because he loves going fast.

“He paddles his board up and down the ramps and in and out of the bowls,” Singel said. Milo has incredible neck muscle strength, as run across an entire parking lot carrying a 7 and a half pound skateboard in his mouth.

“It can be challenging to run beside them as they speed around the skatepark or parking lot, but I’m usually able to get some good footage,” Singel said, “I try to keep the camera running, because if I turn it off, even for a few seconds, it never fails that I miss the pups doing something cool.”

“We just want to bring a little bit of happiness into everyone’s lives,” Singel said, “you can’t help but smile when you see a couple of dogs doing something that dogs don’t normally do.”

DIY Craft Spooky Candelabra

This DIY pool-noodle candelabra is a hit with kids of all ages—and it doubles as a décor piece you’ll pull out year after year.

Easy enough for little hands for a fun afternoon of family creativity and a glowing candelabra that becomes part of your Halloween tradition for seasons to come. Make this craft with us Oct. 18, all supplies included.

Supplies 1 pool noodle cut it into 5 or 6 pieces of different lengths.

Battery-operated tea lights Hot glue gun & glue sticks Black spray paint (matte for gothic vibes, metallic for glam) Utility or serrated knife Sturdy cardboard, wood scrap, or foam board for the base Optional: plastic skulls, faux spider webs, glitter, black ribbon Instructions

Step 1: Slice & Size Cut the pool noodles into varying heights—think tall, medium, and short “candles.” Pro tip: 5 pieces will yield a taller candelabra than 6. Carve out the spot for the 'candle' in the top of each tube before gluing the tubes together Step 2: Create the Candle Drips Heat up the hot glue gun and run generous, uneven lines down from the top edge of each noodle. Let them overlap and pool so they look like wax drips. We used both colored (black) hot glue, and translucent glue sticks, which glow under black light for an added creepy effect.

Step 3: Anchor the Base Arrange the noodles in a tight cluster on your base. Hot glue them together and to the base so they stand tall like a bouquet of eerie candles.

Step 4: Paint It Black Once the glue is cool, spray paint the entire structure. Two light coats work best. Let dry completely.

Step 5: Add the “Flames” Carve a shallow circle in the top of each noodle just deep enough to nest a tea light. Pop one in each “candle.” Battery tea lights are safest and flicker for extra spook.

Step 6: Finishing Touches Drape fake spider webs, add plastic bats or skulls, or sprinkle a little glitter for a witchy sparkle.

Cryptocurrency Opportunities and Challenges

Cryptocurrency is popping up everywhere: on the news, in online games, even in classroom conversations. But what is it really? And how can families talk about it without getting overwhelmed? For National Cryptocurrency Month, we break it down with real stories, no tech degree required.

Early crypto adopter Lisa Ulshafer first dipped into digital currency in December 2017. The experience has been positive, but there have been a few bumps.

“I bought LTC, ETH, and XRP,” Ulshafer, CEO of Parenting by Personality, said. “I caught the last month of the bull run before crypto entered a bear market.”

While buying was exciting, she admits transferring funds between exchanges made her nervous.

“Making sure everything was done correctly and made it to the right destination was the stressful part.”

Crypto is great for personal investing, even paying for a portfolio tracking service, she said, but she has a favorite.

“Coinbase is the most accessible, straightforward, easiest, and most credible,” Ulshafer said, adding her biggest lesson was not taking a profit. “Crypto isn't like investing in a Fortune 500 company,” she said. “Bitcoin is a solid long-term hold, but it still goes through major dips.”

For beginners, Ulshafer has some sage advice.

“Start small and stick with the top 20 coins,” she said. Timing is everything—buy when the market is fearful, and take profits when it’s euphoric.”

Generational Wealth or Trend?

Marcus H., 13, is already studying how cryptocurrency works.

“It feels like it could be the money of the future,” he said. “I think it will be normal for my generation to have a digital wallet instead of a bank account.”

He’s fascinated by how fast it moves. “I like watching the prices go up and down. It’s like a game, but it’s real money. I want to learn more so I can use it smart.”

That’s the key to any investment.

“Crypto has the potential to create generational wealth,” Ulshafer said, “if you have a plan and stick to it.”

Lasagna Rolls, Wings, and Pho - Oh My! If you think vegan food is all kale salads and tofu, you clearly haven’t been to VeggiEAT. Tucked right in Henderson off N. Stephanie Street, this spot is serving up Asian fusion comfort food that makes even the biggest meat-eater stop mid-bite and go, “Wait… this is vegan?!”

New owner Erica Hidalgo is now at the helm, bringing fresh ideas while still honoring what made VeggiEAT a local favorite in the first place. Before stepping into ownership just a couple of months ago, Erica was already known at farmer’s markets with her first business, Erb’s Vegan Kitchen. Erica herself has been vegan for about 11 years now, so when the chance came to partner with the restaurant that she and her kids had been loyal customers of, it felt like the perfect fit.

Erica is gradually blending in her own touches, like probiotic poppies instead of standard sodas, compostable packaging, and a stronger focus on non-GMO ingredients, while still keeping the comfort food vibe VeggiEAT is loved for. She laughs that some of her best menu creations actually came from pregnancy cravings, including her popular vegan Reuben, which she first made when she couldn’t find one anywhere in town.

Now, let me tell you about the food. I tried the Japanese lasagna roll, the Buffalo wings, and the combination pho. Every single dish was packed with flavor, but the Buffalo wings? Absolute game-changer. They’ve got a sugar cane “bone” in the middle for that perfect bite; so good I almost ordered a second round. Luckily for me, my mom was a team player and slid a couple from her plate my way, though not without a fight.

The food wins people over, but sometimes the moments do too.

Erica told me about a little boy who came in on Father’s Day with three generations of family to celebrate his birthday. Since everything on the buffet was vegan, he didn’t have to pick and choose, he could eat it all.

PUMPKIN CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES A perfect cozy treat for fall or any time you’re craving something soft, sweet, and delicious, and it’s all gluten free.

Ingredients ½ cup (135g) pumpkin puree ½ cup (100g) shortening 1 tbsp vanilla extract 1 cup (200g) brown sugar 2 ¼ cup (315 g) GF flour mix ¾ tsp xanthan gum (omit if your mix contains xanthan gum) ½ tsp salt 1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice 1 tsp baking powder ½ tsp baking soda 1 cup (200g) chocolate chips

Directions 1. Line a strainer with paper towels (or a tea towel), put the pumpkin puree in, cover with another towel, and leave to strain for a few minutes while you get your other ingredients ready.

2. In a medium mixing bowl whisk together your flour, xanthan gum, salt, pumpkin pie spice, baking powder, and baking soda. Set it aside.

3. In a large mixing bowl, beat your shortening, brown sugar, and vanilla extract for a few minutes, until lighter and somewhat fluffy.

4. Add the pumpkin puree to your shortening mix and beat until well mixed.

5. Add your dry ingredients, half at a time, beating after each addition.

6. Fold in your chocolate chips by hand.

Chill the dough in the refrigerator for 1 hour.

7. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper. Once your dough has chilled, scoop it into 1-2 tbsp.-size balls, placing them 2-3 inches apart.

8. Flatten the dough balls slightly, then bake for 10-12 minutes, rotating the trays halfway through baking.

9. After baking, cool the cookies on the pan for 5 minutes, then finish cooling on a wire rack.

Are there objects or rooms in the museum that surprise even you?

Why do you think Las Vegas is such a magnet for paranormal activity?

“Each room surprises me the more the museum grows; it's always expanding.

When items come into my possession, they seem to naturally fit in places as if it was planned in the astral plane, like they were always meant to find their way here spiritually...And the longer they are here and the energies interact with each other, the more active and sometimes aggressive they get.”

“They don't call this place Sin City for nothing. Las Vegas does have its dark side...The ties to gambling, unfortunate suicides and an enormous amount of nefarious activities kept concealed in the hotels. Some of the most terrifying cases that I've ever investigated were demonic infestations right here in Las Vegas, severely possessing families.

Also, with Vegas' organized crime and mob history, there will always be that residual energy left behind from those tragedies that still linger to this day.

The high volume of visitors could possibly amplify the city's atmosphere.

The more people interact with these energies, the more active they will become; it's fuel in the fire.”

What's the most compelling story you've uncovered tied to a Vegas haunt? “”A famous adult actress's connection to the Haunted Museum mansion was chilling and very compelling to me and is proven by government documents.

In 1971, her family lived in the mansion where my museum resides, and their father was involved in dark occult practices in the basement that still to this day have traumatized both her and her brother.

Other prominent Las Vegas citizens have also proved to us that our Mansion was known as the "witch house" in the 1970s where countless rituals were conducted, some even witnessing the bloody remnants of them. The portal that was opened by all of this called upon me to create what my museum is today.... A place of indescribable energy entangled in decades of occult practices.”

Any advice for families who want to dip their toes into the spooky side of Vegas — without diving too deep?

“It's important to approach investigating with respect for the spirits that may be present. Not every spirit is demonic or evil, but these spirits are powerful. Be cautious, not everything you communicate with is truthful, and be mindful of your emotional state throughout the process. At my museum, we offer the opportunity for ghost hunting in complete darkness; it is not for the faint of heart.”

For a big adventure, stroll along the cobbled streets of Edinburgh, tracing Scotland’s famous Ghost Trail and end the night at the fiery Samhuinn Festival.

Or step inside the legendary Bran Castle in Transylvania, the mythical home of Dracula, and join a once-a-year Halloween bash complete with midnight tours and lively parties.

Halloween doesn’t always have to be scary. Travel south to Mexico to witness the vibrant, heartwarming celebrations of Día de los Muertos. In San Miguel de Allende, families fill the city with music, parades, colorful altars, and traditions that keep loved ones’ memories alive long after the candles burn out.

Closer to home, explore Nevada and California’s hauntingly beautiful ghost towns.

As the crisp autumn air settles over Las Vegas, the city’s most enchanting Halloween tradition returns. HallOVeen at Opportunity Village transforms a 2.5acre corner of the city into a whimsical forest of pumpkins, playful ghouls, and glowing jack-o’-lanterns. But this isn’t just another Halloween event; it is a celebration with a purpose.

A tradition with heart, HallOVeen began in 2013 to breathe new life into Opportunity Village’s Magical Forest, beginning with the undead.

Founded in 1964, the organization has long been a cornerstone of support for individuals with intellectual disabilities in Southern Nevada. Twelve years later, the Magical Forest has become a beloved holiday attraction. HallOVeen has grown into one of the Valley’s most anticipated family-friendly events.

“Las Vegas visitors and locals alike can expect a haunting good time,” said Laura Foster, director of communications for Opportunity Village. “As one of the primary fundraisers for Opportunity Village, attending HallOVeen directly supports people with disabilities in Southern Nevada.”

Katherine Palacios, Social Night Out facilitator and programs manager at the Ackerman Autism Center, explained that the event is an annual highlight for their teen and young adult group: “There is a lot of spooky fun going on, but not too much,” she said. “You’re able to get away and take a breather or find a sensory break if you feel the need.” For families seeking Halloween fun that welcomes all ages and abilities, HallOVeen strikes the perfect balance.

Every ticket purchased helps fund Opportunity Village’s programs, including workforce development, community employment, day services, inclusive housing, and arts and social recreation. Attending HallOVeen isn’t just about thrills and chills; it is about supporting a cause that empowers individuals with disabilities in Southern Nevada.

Guests will find themselves surrounded by a cemetery of glowing jack-o’-lanterns and trees wrapped in twinkling lights. Friendly witches and wandering ghosts pop up along winding paths, making it feel like you’ve stepped into a storybook or a theme park, complete with attractions like the Avalanche Slide, while families climb aboard the Forest Express passenger train for a slow ride through the illuminated forest while the jingling music of Cheyenne’s Enchanted Carousel fills the air.

Around every corner, there’s another way to play. Ghoul Golf challenges steady hands, Goblet Toss sparks friendly competition, and trick-ortreat stations ensure little ones leave with bags full of sweets. The aroma of autumn drifts through the forest, inviting guests to pause for a snack.

Vegetarian bites are available for those looking for lighter fare, while adults can retreat to the beer garden to sip seasonal brews under the stars.

Shoppers will find treasures at the Holiday Shoppe and Neon Kiosks, from themed trinkets to glowing light-up toys that make the night sparkle even brighter. Costumes are encouraged, adding to the playful atmosphere, though masks and real or replica weapons are not allowed to keep the experience fun and safe.
