Build on the Good Small Changes

= Big Impact

Helping children develop strong mental health starts at home.

Laleh Beijan, M. Ed., BCBA, LBA, Behavior Analyst and owner of Moving Forward Behavioral Health, talked to us about establishing routines, fostering open communication, and teaching age-appropriate self-regulation techniques

What are some daily habits parents can help children develop to promote good mental health?

exercises like deep breathing, or using everyday moments to discuss feelings, small daily efforts can build a foundation for emotional well-being and resilience.

How important is routine for a child's mental well-being, and what are some key routines to prioritize?

Maintaining organization and routine helps children's confidence in knowing what to expect and can lower frustration. Even small regular routines that are clearly understood by both parent and child, especially when the child is encouraged to participate in selecting their schedule and/or order of activities. For example: "What are 3 things we need to do every morning as we get ready for school?"

Discussing feelings and options to self-regulate is very important However, this should be saved for times when the child is demonstrating calm and responsive behavior and should always include feedback and ideas from the child

For example: "I know it was very frustrating earlier when you wanted to have a turn on the iPad and you had to wait longer than you expected to Then collaborate for a solution: "what are some things that would help make waiting a little less frustrating?"

You want to acknowledge that things like waiting can be frustrating for everyone and sometimes having a few go to tools such as taking 5 deep breathes, counting how many green objects are

Whether it's collaborating on morning schedules, practicing stress-relief

How can parents help kids recognize and express their emotions in healthy ways?

nearby or even expressing that they are frustrated but will wait, can offer something to do with that frustration that is more appropriate and easier on everyone, including themselves

What are some age-appropriate techniques to teach kids for managing stress or anxiety?

It can vary, depending on the child's age and skill set. In ABA, self-regulation techniques are introduced as very minimal behaviors and increased as the child masters or is able to demonstrate more complex options

Again; from taking deep breaths to effectively communicating either verbally or using gestures, there are many options and ways to just give a few simple tools that can help in a pinch

How can families encourage open communication so kids feel comfortable talking about feelings?

Wait for an appropriate opportunity to communicate. Always acknowledge and respect the communication shared during problem solving Ensure that the child is always included in options for future and more positive outcomes.

Teen facials address one of the most pressing concerns for adolescents: acne. Hormonal changes during this phase often lead to excess oil production and clogged pores. Facials provide deeper cleaning and safe extractions, which help reduce acne and minimize the risk of scarring.

The Mindful Momma

The Power of Giving Back as a Family

Engaging in community service as a family is a beautiful way to instill values like compassion, gratitude, and responsibility in our children. By working together to serve others, we teach our kids that they are part of a greater community and that their actions, no matter how small, can make a big difference.

When children engage in community service, they develop a stronger sense of empathy and a lifelong habit of giving back. These experiences help them build social skills, foster a sense of teamwork, and understand diverse perspectives.

Volunteering as a family strengthens bonds and creates meaningful memories that go beyond typical activities.

Giving back to the community is often emphasized during the holiday season, but I challenge you to incorporate community service activities for your family throughout the year.

It’s always a good time to make a difference and positively impact our communities. A list of volunteer organizations and their needs+ a free volunteer kit is here.

In Las Vegas, there are numerous opportunities to get involved with causes that welcome young volunteers. Organizations like Three Square Food Bank offer family friendly activities such as packing meals for local food-insecure families. The Animal Foundation allows children to participate in pet adoptions and care under adult supervision For eco-conscious families, Get Outdoors Nevada organizes cleanups that are perfect for kids who love spending time in nature.

When we involve our children in these efforts, we empower them to recognize their ability to create positive change in the world. Volunteering as a family not only benefits the community but also nurtures a spirit of mindfulness and generosity that will last a lifetime.

Celebrating 25 Years of the Vegas PBS KIDS Writers Contest

Vegas PBS is dedicated to empowering children in a city known for its adultfocused entertainment.

Through programs like Ready to Learn (RTL), they build a sense of belonging for the most vulnerable by fostering early childhood education and literacy Led by Jessica Russell, RTL combines family engagement, community events, and media resources to inspire young minds.

A cornerstone of their work is the Vegas PBS KIDS Writers Contest, now celebrating its 25th anniversary. Supported by philanthropist Janice Allen, this contest has received over 18,000 entries since its inception and continues to nurture creativity in students from Clark, Nye, White Pine, and Lincoln Counties

Past winners illustrate the contest's lifelong impact Marcy and Morris Brown, siblings who competed as children, credit the experience with shaping their creative paths Marcy, inspired by nature, wrote “The Coconut Crab” at age 8 and now uses storytelling to teach environmental stewardship. Morris, who followed in his sister's footsteps, won the contest multiple times and now writes music and medical documentation for film.

Another winner, Blake Eecklor, penned “A Perfect Me” in first grade a tale of selfidentity that reflects her drive to “do hard

things ” Today, she’s pursuing a physics degree at Pepperdine University while excelling in athletics and music Blake attributes her creativity and problem-solving skills to early writing habits sparked by the Vegas PBS Kids contest.

As Vegas PBS reflects on 25 years of fostering young storytellers, they invite students in grades K-5 to submit entries for the 2025 contest, running from January 1 to March 14. This milestone highlights the vital role of literacy and creativity in shaping future leaders because every great storyteller starts somewhere

CJ’S TRAVELING HEART

Imagine spending your childhood days trapped in a cramped hospital bed, hooked up to loud machines that make scary noises. You’re confined in the tiny room, while all of your friends are outside playing with each other, enjoying the fresh spring air. You yearn to go to school and see your classmates. One day, you receive an envelope. As you rip open the envelope, you’re greeted with a vibrant “Get Well Soon” card, featuring sparkling handdrawn illustrations. The dazzling card brings joy to the monotonous hospital room, and a smile to your face.

CJForgione wasborn with a critical heart disease.

With a rare condition known as Tetralogy of Fallot, he’s had nine surgeries. Now, CJ helps brighten the days of kids who are in the hospital like he was.

“Throughoutthe years, allthecards thatpeoplesentme, itwascrazynice,”CJ said.“Ijustthoughtit wouldbereallynice tostartmyown thingofdelivering cardstopeople myselfbecauseof howgooditmade mefeel,”CJsaid.

Watching her son light up as each card arrived gave joy to their ordeal. “The overall feeling that CJ got when he was receiving cards really helped him in his healing process,” Piper Forgione, CJ’s mother, said

Creating CJs Traveling Heart has been a way for CJ to take a difficult time, and create something positive.

The smiles and delight of the card recipients reminds CJ why he spends his time handing out cards.

“This kid named Levi, he has Down syndrome. When we gave him the card, he was just really excited to see us and really happy, and that made me feel really good,” CJ said. He had met Levi, who had a similar surgery to CJ, a few times

“When we visited him in the hospital and CJ was able to show up with a bunch of cards from other kids, I think that was meaningful to Levi,” Piper said.

“It’s a good message to show kids who are going through tough medical situations that they can get through it, and they can do it in a positive way It shows that they have a community that supports them, and there’s always people around to help, and I think that’s the most important part of it,” Piper said.

Aside from designing gleaming cards, the community can also get involved with assisting heart warriors by joining Team CJ for the “Walk with the Heart of a Child” heart walk fundraiser. The fundraiser is one of the numerous charity events CJ and his mom attend each year.

“We’re always trying to raise money for the heart community,” Piper said.

Currently, CJ’s cards also travel to New York and New Jersey. CJ and Piper hope to branch out to other states in the future.

“I hope to see it around, everywhere, just people talking about it and acknowledging it,” CJ said. “Just growing the amount of people who know about CJs Traveling Heart is kind of the goal over the next 5 years,” Piper said.

Anyone can create a card for CJ to deliver.

“We have card kits that we’ve made up, it’s a little kit with supplies in it to make a card, and there’s a self-addressed envelope in the card to come back to CJs PO box,” Piper said. “You make the card with the supplies that are in there, and then send it back to the PO box, and we collect everything from our PO box, and that’s how we deliver them.”

“We try to deliver cards once a month, sometimes more,” Piper said. CJ and his mom also deliver gift bags of toys and items they can use in the hospital.

After his multiple surgeries and hospital stays, CJ is brave and fearless. “If I can get through that, I can get through anything,” CJ said.

HEART OF THE COMMUNITY AWARDs

Since its founding in 2020, Vegas Kids Zone has been a hub for connection, creativity, and community, bringing families and young entrepreneurs together through resource fairs, markets, and hands-on activities. Along the way, something extraordinary emerged: a growing wave of individuals both children and adults dedicated to making a difference in the Las Vegas community

Whether it’s a child creating care packages for seniors, a business offering free services to families in need, or a local group advocating for mental health awareness, these acts of kindness and leadership often go unnoticed

The Vegas Kids Zone Heart of the Community Awards were created to change that. These awards shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes who inspire, uplift, and strengthen our community every day. VegasBites

FlavorfulFindsandCulinaryCreations: BudgetBitesEdition

If you think eating out in Las Vegas is all about super fancy places that cost a ton of money, guess what? It's not!

There are so many awesome places where you can get really good food without making your wallet cry. Here are my favorite spots where families can chow down on delicious food and still have money left for dessert (which we all know is the best part):

Milpa

If you like tacos (and who doesn’t?), Milpa is amazing. Their tacos are stuffed with all kinds of healthy things and great meat options and the Mexican street corn is the best thing ever. Plus, the portions are HUGE, so you can share with your family.

Amari (Happy Hour)

This place is cool because it’s fancy but not expensive during happy hour (3-5:30 p.m. daily). You can get pizza and pasta that tastes like it came from a TV chef’s kitchen and the ABSOLUTE best meatballs ever. It’s also really comfortable so it’s kind of like a lounge area with food and drinks, great for chilling with your family after a long day.

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT

Bajamar

Do you like seafood? Then you HAVE to try Bajamar. Their fish and shrimp tacos are super flavorful, and their ceviche is so fresh it feels like the ocean is in your mouth (but in a good way). It’s super chill here too, which is awesome.

Nora’s Italian Cuisine (Lunch Menu)

Nora’s is where you go when you’re craving Italian food. Their spaghetti is so good, and their chicken piccata tastes like something from Italy itself Plus, the lunch menu is way cheaper than dinner, so it’s perfect for families.

Curry Zen

Okay, this place is super cool because it has Japanese curry, which is kind of like a thick, sweet, and spicy sauce over rice. It’s really filling, and they have stuff even picky eaters will like. So, which one are you going to try first?

Secret Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

1 cup sugar

1 cup real mayonnaise

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 cups cake flour

1/2 cup Dutch process cocoa

1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup buttermilk

Luxardo cherries, for garnish

Mayonnaise… yes, mayonnaise! That creamy condiment hiding in your fridge is the unexpected star of this scratch chocolate cake. While it might seem unconventional, it makes perfect sense every cake needs fat for richness and moisture, and mayo delivers both in spades. Don’t just take our word for it; whip this up and taste the magic yourself. Trust us, it’s better than butter or oil!

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F Grease and flour a 9x9 baking pan, or line with parchment paper

In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine the sugar and mayonnaise Beat until the mixture is smooth and well blended Add the vanilla extract and mix again

In a separate bowl, sift together the cake flour, Dutch process cocoa, baking soda, and salt

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture in three batches, alternating with the buttermilk. Start and end with the dry ingredients, mixing just until everything is incorporated. Avoid overmixing to keep the cake tender.

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pan, smoothing the top with a spatula. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Let the cake cool in the pan for 20 minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and serve with Luxardo cherries for a touch of indulgence Enjoy the surprisingly rich and moist chocolate cake!

This cake is proof that sometimes the most unexpected ingredients make the best desserts. Happy baking!

Together, they aim to create a cookbook that is not only a collection of recipes but a celebration of culture, music, and the joy of cooking

Since the pandemic, Tiffany has cooked up a few new projects, including the 2023 “Breakfast With Tiffany,” co-authored with Tom Vrem, featuring breakfasts and brunch recipes inspired by her worldtour travels. Her Let’s Food with Tiffany cooking club puts fans at her kitchen table as she talks about her life and love of food while she cooks easy-to-make favorites.

Their hardcover coffee table cookbook, “Pop Life” will feature a variety of simple dishes that reflect both Shevetone’s culinary prowess and Tiffany’s unique perspective to “make entertaining fun and new again.”

The cookbook includes tips and techniques from Tiffany, alternative ingredients and globally inspired party food from Shevetone’s exemplary repertoire and retro vibes and tablescapes to zhuzh up your athome dining experience In short, it’s totally awesome

A mutual friend suggested Tiffany meet Shevetone The bond was almost immediate

“We were quick buddies,” said Tiffany, who has appeared on Food Network shows and worked with cookbook authors and chefs Rachael Ray and Guy Fieri “I’m a newbie in the food world and just open to everything. When I first met Alicia, she spoke from the heart, and I just was impressed She knew I didn’t have any proper training but that I have a passion for learning and cooking. She gave me so much encouragement, and here we are doing a cookbook. It’s a dream come true for me.”

The friends are taking favorite foods from way back when as well as a few surprises and elevating them in new, healthy and fun ways. The recipes will range from gourmet meals to easy-to-make comfort foods, catering to both seasoned cooks and kitchen novices.

Shevetone has started the first Cookbook Library! It currently has 200 cookbooks in circulation across two branches: Palate Las Vegas in the Arts District downtown and Henderson Multigenerational Center.

Want to help? Have cookbooks you want to donate? They currently accept monetary donations here and new or like new cookbook donations by appointment only.

“We don’t want ‘Pop Life’ to be just another cookbook on the shelf,” Shevetone said. “We want it to be tattered and used from cooking for parties and family dinners.”

“As a cookbook author, I value culinary literacy Cookbooks are a luxury item for many people who may not be able to justify spending $20, $40 or even $100 to learn about great recipes and new ingredients,” she said “My mission in founding the library was to make culinary content more accessible to the community, and inspire people to cook at home.”

Shevetone is in her fourth year of her culinary residency at Vegas Valley Winery. Join her at the next appetizer and wine pairing event February 8 at 5:30pm. Tickets are available on Eventbrite here

Teen Spirit

Wouldyouwanttoreconnectwith yourteenageself?

If you had a chance to revisit your awkward, angsty adolescent self, would you take it? Armed with the age and wisdom gained only through the passage of time, what might you say to the much younger you so wide-eyed, insecure and filled with questionable fashion choices?

Since last fall, 62-year-old Carolee Carmello has been reconnecting with her teenage self most days while starring in the national tour of the Broadway hit musical “Kimberly Akimbo,” which stops Feb. 4-9 at The Smith Center’s Reynolds Hall

On Broadway, the dark comedy won five Tony Awards including Best Musical in 2023. Its story follows an optimistic teen as she settles into a new town while simultaneously battling a rare condition that causes her to age at warp speed

Carmello, a three-time Tony nominee, has played a variety of characters during her career. However, playing a teen let alone one experiencing an extraordinary adolescence has presented her with a unique set of challenges.

“Gettingintouchofthe16-year-oldversion ofmeisalittletricky,”Carmellorecently toldthePortland(Oregon)Tribune

“IhavetolookwaybacktohowIfelt(atage16).”

She describes the Kimberly character as “very hopeful She has a positive outlook on life despite challenges. She’s aging quickly and facing mortality, but she’s the new kid at a new school trying to make friends and having her first crush, and dysfunctional parents who are hysterically funny”

Most of Carmello’s “Kimberly Akimbo” castmates are in their early 20s.

“They have that energy and outlook that we all had as teenagers It helps to play scenes with them, I can match their energy”

Also, as a mother with two adult children in their 20s, she says, “I can remember their teenage years more than my own.”

Rescue Tales

“When the devastating Southern California fires broke

attention. This ensures they don’t rescue more dogs than we can responsibly place and care for.

“It’s heartbreaking to see dogs in such dire situations, and we felt a moral responsibility to act,” Spotofora said

The innocent animals were scared and did not know what was happening to them.

“I am often shaken up, meeting and getting updates on these spectacular dogs that would have died alone in the scariest place, they are a special kind of magic,” Spotofora said.

One heartwarming story involves a Frenchie they rescued from the Moreno Valley Shelter. “A woman on her way to adopt this dog discovered he had already been rescued and was heartbroken,” Spotofora said. The next morning, she saw him featured on the rescue’s Instagram, because someone shared the post, and immediately reached out

“We arranged a foster-to-adopt situation, and he found his forever home before he even arrived in Las Vegas.” Spotofora said.

HeartHealthforFurFriends

Just like humans, pets thrive when they’re fueled by proper nutrition. A well-balanced diet tailored to your pet's specific needs supports their overall health, energy levels, and longevity .

Food

From shiny coats and strong teeth to a robust immune system, the benefits of quality nutrition go far beyond the basics of keeping your pet full. Feeding your furry friend the right food is an investment in their happiness and wellbeing, ensuring they can live their best, healthiest life, said Lori Douglas of By Your Side Pet Services.

(Go here for the full list )

Meat and chicken (cooked, deboned)

Fish (boiled, deboned/fillet)

Tuna fish (occasionally, one tablespoon)

Egg (boiled/scrambled)

Cooked ham, bacon (in small amounts)

Kibble

There are good and bad choices for kibble Learn to read the ingredients and educate yourself on the brand you are considering. The bottom line is this: The first five products listed on the label have the highest percentage of that item in the food. This is also true for canned food Be on the lookout for fructose corn syrup, white flour, artificial coloring or preservatives That stuff is not good for us either Do not feed it to your dogs. Same rule goes for treats. We, as pet parents, are hard-pressed to find healthy treats! My recommendation is to go with a raw diet. There are many companies that will ship food specifically made for your dog Go here for Lori’s favorites
