Two Vecellio companies are working together in central Florida to build a section of FL-429 known as Wekiva Parkway. Ranger Construction is providing excavation, grading, embankment walls and paving services, while Vecellio & Grogan is performing the bridge work, elevating sections of the limited-access highway over four separate wildlife crossings.

The six-mile section is part of a northern loop finishing a beltway around greater Orlando, reducing traffic through the heart of the metro area. Superior Construction is the lead contractor on the design-build job.

Back in its home state of West Virginia, Vecellio & Grogan is improving about 25 miles of Route 10 in Wyoming County, building lagging walls, adding shoulders and straightening five curves along the two-lane rural roadway. V&G will have just under two years to complete the project, which is valued at $30.8 million.

US-221 in Ashe County, N.C. Vecellio & Grogan is making good progress on a $53-million contract to improve four miles of US-221 in Ashe County, N.C. The project is due for completion by late 2020.

Ranger, V&G Build Section Of Wekiva Parkway Near Orlando

Leo Vecellio, Jr. Selected For WV Business Hall of Fame When Leo Vecellio, Jr. joined his family’s West Virginia-based road construction firm in 1973, he had a vision to expand into other regions and industries. In the decades that followed, he spearheaded the effort, growing the family’s business interests into one of the nation’s leading privately-owned contracting, mining and energy groups, operating throughout the mid-Atlantic and southeastern U.S., and beyond.

At a ceremony later this year, Leo’s many years of business success, industry leadership and extensive philanthropy will be recognized with his induction into the West Virginia Business Hall of Fame. Sponsored by West Virginia University, the Hall

recognizes business leaders who have strong ties to the Mountain State, and have made a significant impact across the business landscape of their local communities, the state, the nation and around the world.

Vecellio & Grogan, the flagship company of the Vecellio Group, was founded in 1938 by Leo’s father, grandfather and uncle.

Starting with small street paving projects in the Beckley area, the company grew in size and stature, eventually ranking as one of the nation’s busiest highway contractors.

Leo grew up in the industry, earned related college degrees, and served as an Air Force officer, before joining the family business and guiding its remarkable growth into the Vecellio Group of today.

Night Shifts Not Unusual On Large Resurfacing Projects Sharpe Bros., a grading, paving and utilities division of Vecellio & Grogan operating in the Greensboro, N.C., area, also regularly performs night-shift milling and paving services. Current projects include more than six miles of work on I-40 near Winston-Salem (shown on page 5).

Contracts for milling and resurfacing work on major roadways often require that services must be performed at night. This aligns the work schedule with the lightest traffic volume, while minimizing disruptions for motorists during the day. It’s all part of a day’s — or night’s — work in the industry.

One recent example is a Ranger Construction project in Orlando (shown). As part of work on I-4 at Florida’s Turnpike, Ranger crews, led by Milling Foreman Brett Vaughn and Asphalt Foreman Eric Ungaro, milled and paved a street just off an exit ramp.

The National Asphalt Pavement Association has recognized the work of Ranger Construction in Florida and Sharpe Bros. in North Carolina, bestowing multiple Quality In Construction Awards.

For projects under 50,000 tons of asphalt, Ranger received QIC awards for its work on Military Trail in Palm Beach County and US-27 in Broward County, while its Winter Garden office picked up an award for US-441 improvements in Okeechobee County.

Ranger also received awards for its work on projects over 50,000 tons. The Winter Garden office was recognized for improvements made to Florida’s Turnpike in Indian River and Okeechobee Counties, SR-70 in Okeechobee, and US-27 in Clermont.

As market leaders, Ranger Construction and Sharpe Bros. regularly maintain and upgrade their asphalt contracting facilities.

Ranger recently upgraded a fuel tank at its Deerfield, Fla., facility, which last year received a third storage silo, while two new silos and a second scale were added to its Miami plant. Sharpe, meanwhile, added a third silo recently at its plant in Kernserville, N.C. The silo additions allow the plants to have a greater variety of mix types on hand, or a higher volume of a specific mix type, such as for resurfacing highway lanes or an airport runway.

Ranger owns and operates a half-dozen asphalt plants serving central and south Florida, from the greater Orlando area through Miami. Sharpe has three asphalt plants in and around Greensboro, N.C. Both companies provide asphalt mixes for their own paving crews, as well as FOB sales to other contractors, so their ability to consistently produce high-quality material is vital.

Heat Stroke & Heat Exhaustion: Know How To Recognize & Treat These Dangers HEAT STROKE: Heat stroke results from a combination of heat, exertion, and high humidity that doesn’t allow perspiration to evaporate normally, driving up the body temperature to a dangerously high level.

Heat stroke can be fatal! Call 9-1-1 and get medical help immediately!

Symptoms include a body temperature of 105° or above, hot dry skin, mental confusion, delirium, loss of consciousness, convulsions or coma.

Call for medical help immediately if you suspect heat stroke! Make sure to give clear directions to your exact location.

HEAT EXHAUSTION: Heat exhaustion

Get the person out of the sun.

Symptoms include weakness, fatigue, nausea or headache.

Pour lots of cool water on him or her to thoroughly soak the clothing.

Fan vigorously to reduce body temperature.

Remember, call for medical help immediately, then follow the steps above until medical help arrives. You could save a life!

Ranger Employees ‘Go Orange’ For National Work Zone Awareness Week Ranger Construction’s field, shop and office employees wore orange T-shirts with the safety message “Drive Like You Work Here” as part of National Work Zone Awareness Week. The colorful garb, worn on Go Orange Day (April 10th this year), was part of a national publicity event uniting those in construction-related industries, expressing concern for job site safety and showing support for crews performing the work.

The annual event is sponsored by the American Traffic Safety Services Association.

Vecenergy, Ranger Earn Safety Council Awards; Group Adds To ‘No Lost Time’

V

ecenergy, the Vecellio Group’s energy division, and Ranger Construction’s Central and South Divisions all received recognition from the Safety Council of Palm Beach County at its annual awards luncheon and fundraising auction, held earlier this year. The awards honored Worker Safety, based on OSHA recordable incident rates, and Vehicle Safety, tied to annual fleet miles safely driven.

Vecenergy also received awards for Fleet Safety and Outstanding Lost Time Record from the Florida Safety Council.

Through early May, Vecenergy had worked more than 7.5 years with no lost-time injuries. Meanwhile, White Rock had passed the four-year mark, while Vecellio & Grogan and Hal Jones Contractor both had reached more than one year.

RET I REMENTS

he Vecellio Group wishes a happy retirement to all employees who have recently stepped back from full-time work, including several recipients of longevity awards.

At Vecellio & Grogan, three long-timers retired. Joe Mattlin, who had risen to Vice President – Construction before finishing one last job as Project Manager, retired after 40 years of service. In the shop, now known as Beckley Equipment Repair, Mechanic David Johnson retired after 40 years of service, while Mechanic Alvin Jones retired after more than 32 years.

White Rock had two recent retirements.

Jorge Marquez, Pit Loader Operator, retired after 19 years. Jorge was very productive and versatile, working primarily as a Loader Operator, but also serving as a Haul Truck Driver. He was dependable, efficient and friendly, known for sharing Cuban coffee

with his co-workers before their shift began each morning. Also retiring at White Rock was Miguel Rubido, a Sales Loader Operator, with 13 years of service and 30-plus years of experience in the industry. Miguel was known for his responsibility, dependability and safe working habits. He was consistently accurate, loading each truck to the proper weight mandated by FDOT. At Hal Jones Contractor, Ron Smith retired after 19-plus years of valued service. Ron was the company’s Field Engineer, responsible for all field layout work, consisting primarily of structural layout for all bridges, from the substructure through the superstructure.

Vecellio Management Services had two recent retirements. Monique Gors, a Group HR Manager who provided valuable assistance to upper management and worked closely with all operating units, signed off after 14 years.

Technical Manager Dennis Brutlag stepped back after 12 years with VMS’ Information Technology Dept. Dennis led the applications team responsible for the cost accounting system, including field reporting, and other vital processes used throughout the Group.

They use remote-controlled hammers to dislodge any jams, while monitoring the conveyors, secondary crushers and stackers. The facility is one of the largest-producing limestone quarries in the nation.
