Safety is critically important in the summer months to ensure employee health and wellbeing on the job. We have already witnessed record high temperatures throughout the U.S. to start the year, and that trend is likely to continue in the third quarter. Heat stroke and dehydration can be deadly. It is everyone’s responsibility to keep an eye on coworkers. Supervisors should make sure water is always available for team members and promote communication to ensure employees who may get overcome by the heat take breaks and get fluids as needed.

I’m proud to recognize the supervisors who’s leadership and commitment to doing the right thing earned them Supervisor Safety Awards for 2024. Vecellio & Grogan’s SR A1A Project Featured In National Industry Publication Vecellio & Grogan was recently highlighted in Piledriver Magazine (cover image below left) for its work on a new bridge on SR A1A in Ft. Pierce, FL. The high-rise structure has a vertical clearance of approximately 85 feet over the Indian River, part of the Intracoastal Waterway. When complete, the bridge will be 4,152 ft. long and have a variable width ranging from approximately 51 to 68 ft. The bridge will also include a 12-ft-wide bicycle/pedestrian path that will be part of the East Coast Greenway, a trail system that connects 15 states from Florida to Maine.

The major focus of the article was V&G’s use of driven piles, which were considered the “best deep foundation option” for the bridge.

According to Sonny Greene, Project Superintendent at V&G, shown in the photo below right, the small footings of driven piles allow more room for boats/ships to navigate the area safely. Greene also explained that driven pile foundations take less time to install than other options and are more cost effective than drilled shafts.

As the General Contractor on the project, V&G will also remove the North Causeway Bridge — the existing structure — once the new bridge is complete. The project, valued at more than $110 million, is the second largest project in V&G’s history and is planned for completion in 2026.

Sharpe Bros. Improves Communities & Highways In N.C.

Sharpe Bros. is currently working on multiple projects in the Winston-Salem area in N.C. Three of those project are due to be completed this year.

In January 2025, Sharpe Bros. began a two-way conversion project at Main & Liberty in downtown Winston, N.C.

When complete, both roads will be converted from one-way to two-way traffic including upgrades to signals at every intersection. A trench box keeps crew members safe (photos below) during the work. The project is planned for completion at the end of 2025.

The three projects, worth nearly $20 million, are a tribute to Sharpe’s reputation and history of success in North Carolina’s tri-county area.

The first is a paving project for Kiser Middle School (above left) in Guilford County, N.C. The project consists of fine grading, 10,000 tons of stone, 4,700 tons of paving, including curb & gutter and striping.

Sharpe’s work began in November 2024 and should be complete by the end of Q3 2025.

Sharpe crews are also providing new construction and resurfacing (above right) on US-421 in Randolph County. The project began in August of 2024 and is scheduled for completion later this year.

As the paving subcontractor, Sharpe Bros. is providing milling and paving for the two-mile long stretch of highway.

Ranger & Vecenergy Recognized For Safety

Ranger and Vecenergy were recognized by the Safety Council of Palm Beach County at their annual luncheon in April. Ranger’s Central and South Divisions, as well as Vecenergy, were all recognized for Employee Safety and Vehicle Safety for 2024.

WORK ZONE AWARENESS! The Vecellio Companies again participated in National Work Zone Awareness Week, which took place in April. The National Asphalt Pavement Association’s 2025 campaign - Respect the Zone, So We All Get Home - educated the public on the dangers of distracted driving in work zones.

Through the Lens Alligator Alley is the nickname for an 80-mile stretch of I-75 that crosses the Florida Everglades, connecting the east and west coasts of South Florida. It’s a major highway known for its scenic views of the Everglades and the wildlife, including alligators, that inhabit the area.

Working Safely in High Temperatures

The summer months may prove to be hotter than previous years.

Because of that, it is critical that employees become familiar with the more common heat-related illnesses and their symptoms.

L.L. Gwinn Celebrates 50-Year Anniversary

Hurricane Planning & Preparation Helps Ensure Safety Road construction businesses must take proactive and strategic steps to prepare for hurricane season to protect their people, equipment, materials, timelines, and infrastructure investments.

Two key areas of focus for work crews are 1) Site Preparation, and 2) Workforce Safety & Communication.

Site Preparation • Anchor or relocate heavy equipment to higher ground.

• Store materials like asphalt, concrete additives, and aggregates in waterproof, wind-resistant storage.

• Tie down temporary structures (trailers, scaffolding, signage).

• Drainage Management: Ensure drainage systems around work zones are clear and functioning to prevent flooding.

Workforce Safety & Communication • Emergency Contact Lists: Maintain upto-date contact information for all employees, subcontractors, and vendors.

• Training: Conduct hurricane preparedness and evacuation training. Include how to shut down machinery safely.

• Communication Systems: Establish redundant communication methods (e.g., text alerts, radios, mobile apps) in case of network outages.

It is important to pay close attention to local and regional weather reports to ensure safety for all.

L.L. Gwinn (left in photo below), Special Projects Manager and former Secretary/ Treasurer of V&G, recently celebrated his 50-year service anniversary at Vecellio & Grogan. He received his service award, a gold Presidential Rolex watch, from another 50-year employee - Leo A. Vecellio, Jr., Chairman, CEO & President of Vecellio Group, Inc. L.L. is only the fifth individual to achieve this accomplishment.

Gary Daniel Gary Daniel began his career at White Rock Quarries in November 1989 as a Loader Operator.

Due to his thorough operational knowledge and natural leadership abilities, Gary was promoted to Night Shift Foreman at the Aggregate Plant, then to Portable Crusher Foreman at the plant.

Gary was a mentor and leader to all. His knowledge and support will be missed by all fellow team members and the entire business congratulates Gary on his well-deserved retirement.

Fernando A. Jaime Chavez

In 2011, Fernando Jaime Chavez began his career at Murray Logan Construction. As a Laborer on Pump Stations, Fernando never missed a day’s work, and always did everything that was asked of him.

His dependability and positive attitude made Fernando a great coworker. He will be missed by everyone he worked with at Murray Logan.

Jamie Jaimes Chavez

Jamie Chavez, a Seawall Carpenter, began working at Murray Logan Construction in January of 2020. His quiet, kind nature helped him get along with all his coworkers. Jamie was dependable and accepted every task with a smile. He will be missed by all his coworkers.

Timothy R. Fox

Tim Fox was hired by Ranger in 2017 as Senior Plant Manager, bringing with him exceptional skill in diagnosing and efficiently resolving issues at the 10

asphalt plants. He quickly earned the respect of his coworkers, not only for his deep knowledge and extensive experience but also for his willingness to roll up his sleeves and work alongside them. Tim’s kind demeanor, meticulous attention to detail, and thoughtful approach to working with people made a lasting impact. He will be greatly missed by the entire team at Ranger.

Wilfredo Vega Ramos

Wilfredo Ramos started as a Hill Man for the pipe crew at Ranger’s Central Division in February 2022. He was always forward looking and able to provide exact counts on materials needed on the job.

Wilfredo was creative in how he approached his work, and was always willing to help coworkers and answer any questions they may have. That support and guidance is what the Ranger team will miss most as Wilfredo begins his retirement.

George W. Schnorr, III

George Schnorr began his long career with Hal Jones Contractor in February 1999. His leadership skills led him to becoming Bridge Superintendent on many high profile jobs in the Jacksonville area.

Having a fondness for photography, George documented many of his projects including the supervision of the Jacksonville Pier which had to be completely replaced after a hurricane. George was a true leader, and his work ethic, professionalism, and expertise will be missed by all at Hal Jones and Vecellio & Grogan overall.

Richard A. Spence

tor Grader Operator. Rick’s leadership skills and experience led to him training multiple Grader Operators during his tenure, some of whom are still working at the Winter Garden location.

Rick was driven by safety and quality on the job and was always looking for ways to improve processes or train team members to be their best.

He was always thinking outside the box, and looking for ways to improve the business. This unique focus will be missed by team members and vendors alike.

Deborah K. Thornton

Deborah “Debbie” Thornton came out of retirement in 2024 to join her husband Larry to work on the Simpson River Bridge project at V&G. Debbie and her husband had 40 years of experience working together, and she will be remembered as a hard worker with a great, yet sarcastic, sense of humor.

She will be missed by her V&G family.

William F. Yoder

William F. “Bill” Yoder began his career with Ranger as a Mechanic in Ft. Pierce in 1983. His leadership and knowledge of the business led him to becoming Grade Foreman, and later moving into Estimating. Bill’s attention to detail allowed him to provide timely, competitive and accurate quotes.

His customers loved working with him so much that he quickly became the only call for asphalt pricing.

Bill’s ability to build and foster relationships with both customers and team members will be greatly missed by everyone he worked with.

Rex A. Nealis Rex Nealis joined White Rock Quarries in September 2008, bringing with him an energy and warmth that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

As Sales Manager, Rex was known for his outgoing nature, strong work ethic, and genuine kindness. He had a way of making people feel valued — whether you were a colleague, a customer, a vendor, or a complete stranger, you could always count on Rex to lend a helping hand.

Rex was not only personable but also exceptionally sharp. He had a strong business sense and consistently offered ideas that were both practical and impactful. When coworkers were asked to describe him, the words most often shared were: humble, kind, loyal, dedicated, and sincere.

Rex passed away earlier this year in Fort Lauderdale, FL, after a brief illness. He was surrounded by love, with his devoted wife Holly by his side. His presence will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of working with him at White Rock.

Howard D. Gooden David Gooden began his career with Hal Jones Contractor in October 2001 as a Welder. Through hard work, dedication, and a strong desire to learn, he earned a promotion to Pile Driver Foreman in November 2008.

David was known for his reliability and strong work ethic. His no-nonsense approach and commitment to getting the job done set a powerful example for his crews. With his deep knowledge and many years of experience in the marine construction industry, he quickly earned the respect of his colleagues and was always seen as a valuable and trusted team member.

On January 29, 2025, David passed away at home, surrounded by his loving daughters, after a brief battle with cancer. His presence, leadership, and friendship will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
