letter from the president

Vandebilt Catholic Community,
I believe Vandebilt Catholic is in the midst of a real renaissance. This renaissance is the byproduct of the time, talent, and treasure invested in our school by so many in our community. I hope that as you read through this latest version of the Paw Print you are as inspired as I am by the number of people that love and support our school.
Part of the renewed spirit of our school community certainly has to be attributed to the progress being made in our facilities. The Dickie Barker Student Union is everything we hoped it would be and more. It has given our teachers and students a real sense of excitement as we approach the final stages of rebuilding and renovation. Seeing our students’ faces as they entered for the first time is a memory that will always remain with me, but the highlight thus far was our students being able to watch the volleyball playoff game on the screens in the union while enjoying lunch. Seeing our students come together in the union to cheer on their friends was the realization of our hopes for what that space could be for our students.
So where are we in the repair process? By the end of January, we will have completed all of the repairs in the Kolb Center, front office complex, and Resource Center. The air conditioning replacement is complete in Phase 1 (front office and resource center), and the impact resistant doors and windows are in progress. You may have noticed the new windows on the front office if you have passed by recently. At the completion of those renovations, we will begin working on classrooms, the library, counseling center, and digital media center which should be completed by the end of March. All storm related repairs and improvements will be completed by July of 2025, with the exception of the football field house and Brothers’ Hall.
Let us all continue to work together to make our hopes and dreams a reality on our campus. Your support for our school’s mission is invaluable and is the lifeblood of our future. Let’s keep the Spirit of the Fighting Terrier strong!
God Bless,
Mr.Jeremy Gueldner

Dear Terrier Families,
It’s hard to believe that we are already halfway through our school year, but here we are facing 2025. It is true what so many say - time flies. With the flurry of activity, it is easy for us to forget to bring it back to the roots. Here at Vandebilt Catholic, we are undoubtedly rooted in spirit - a spirit of Faith, Family, and Excellence. The Holy Spirit can be seen moving through our student body as they sing our theme song “My Lighthouse” at the end of each school wide mass. Our school spirit is evident in the student sections of athletic events and other student activities. A spirit of excellence permeates the classrooms, the athletic fields, the performance stages, and our entire campus. I pray that we continue to grow together in faith and community as a Vandebilt Catholic family.
Terriers Together,

rooted in love

Ann Meche ‘80 embodies the true spirit of Vandebilt Catholic High School (VCHS) through her tireless dedication and service as a board member, alumna, and advocate for the school’s mission. Her journey with Vandebilt, deeply rooted in family values and faith, reflects a lifelong commitment to fostering excellence in Catholic education.
For Ann, education has always been paramount. “We have always viewed Vandebilt as the best school in our community,” she shares. Her decision to join the VCHS Consultative Board was driven by her passion for supporting the school that has shaped generations of students. Her time on the Board has deepened her understanding of the school’s needs and goals, especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. Despite the devastation, Ann witnessed the administration’s unwavering focus on academic excellence, student safety, and spiritual growth.
Supporting the VCHS Annual Fund is a cornerstone of Ann’s involvement. She highlights its importance in addressing the evolving needs of the school, from competitive teacher salaries to funding extracurricular activities. “I want to see my Alma Mater continue to be the best it can be. Tuition alone doesn’t cover everything, and Vandebilt receives no government funding. If we want our school to continue to be the best, additional funding is vital,” she explains.
As a proud alumna and former parent, Ann cherishes her Vandebilt experience. Her mother, a single parent, made sacrifices to ensure she and her sisters received a Catholic education. Ann and her husband Kirk, also a VCHS ‘80 graduate, continued this legacy with their own sons. “It’s been amazing watching the successes of graduates,” she says, reflecting on the school’s enduring impact.
Ann also points to Vandebilt’s resilience during crises as a testament to its unwavering spirit.
From welcoming displaced students in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina to the challenge of rebuilding after Ida, the Terrier community has shown remarkable unity.
“"In true Terrier spirit, challenging times do not dull the Terrier nation regardless of the time span or circumstances,"” Ann affirms.
For Ann, Vandebilt Catholic is more than a school—it’s a family rooted in faith, love, and the determination to thrive together.

student spotlight:
Jay Westbrook, Vandebilt Catholic High School Senior

Q: What has been the most meaningful part of your time at VCHS?
A: The most meaningful part of my time at Vandebilt Catholic has been the memories I’ve made with friends and the experiences I’ve gained through sports and clubs. Above all, being part of the Vandebilt soccer team since seventh grade has left the greatest impact. The team has taught me sportsmanship, perseverance, dedication, and pride. It’s not just about playing the game; it’s about fostering hard work, responsibility, and brotherhood. These values have made a lasting impression on my life.
Q: What role has school spirit played in shaping your experience as a student?
A: School spirit is something Vandebilt truly excels at! Whether it’s the band, cheerleaders, dance team, parents, community, or the student body, the energy at Vandebilt events is unparalleled. Sporting events, in particular, are
electric. There’s nothing quite like hearing the fans cheer, seeing the sea of blue and gold, and feeling the confetti rain down. These moments make you proud to be a Terrier and reinforce the sense of unity and pride within our school.
Q: As a senior, how do you try to inspire underclassmen and foster a sense of school pride?
A: Being a good Christian role model and mentoring underclassmen through academics, sports, and clubs is key. Seniors set the tone by fostering positive relationships and actively engaging in school life. When younger students see seniors having fun and participating in various activities, it encourages them to do the same. I’ve been fortunate to have mentors who guided me through the challenges of high school, and I strive to pay it forward by setting a good example for those who follow.
Q: Can you share a moment when you felt the VCHS community come together in a powerful way?
A: Since I joined Vandebilt in 2020, our community has experienced significant highs and lows. We’ve celebrated victories together, but the moments of loss and challenge have truly shown the strength of the VCHS community. From navigating the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 to rebuilding after Hurricane Ida in 2021, and mourning the loss of two beloved classmates in 2022, we have always come together to support one another. These experiences demonstrated the resilience, compassion, and unity of our school. For me, these were the most powerful and transformative moments.
Q: As you prepare to graduate, what legacy do you hope to leave for the next generation of students?
A: I hope my legacy encourages students to be true to themselves and embrace the opportunities Vandebilt offers. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and let God guide you. Vandebilt has given me unforgettable memories and invaluable experiences. My message to future students is to stay rooted in their faith and take full advantage of the opportunities here to grow in spirit, community, and character.
Q: What are you most excited about for the future of VCHS?
A: The growth and renovations at Vandebilt are incredibly exciting. While I’ll only get to enjoy these improvements for a short time, I know they will be a game-changer for future Terriers. Vandebilt’s strong leadership and academic rigor ensure that future students will have an even better experience, equipped with all they need to thrive both in high school and beyond.
Based
rooted in values
on an
interview with Travis and Valerie Callais

For our family, Vandebilt Catholic High School (VCHS) has been much more than a school—it has shaped our values and provided a sense of stability. It is a place where faith, education, and community beautifully intertwine, creating an environment that supports not only academic goals but also spiritual and personal aspirations.
As parents of current students
Aliza '25, Aleiya '28 and Jacques '28, we’ve experienced the unique and powerful bond of the VCHS community. This connection has grown through shared involvement and a collective commitment to faith and the well-being of our children. The relationships we’ve built with
faculty, staff, and fellow parents have made us feel like valued members of a supportive and nurturing family.
The transformative impact of VCHS on our children has been remarkable. Through the school’s holistic approach to Catholic education, we’ve seen them grow not just academically but also emotionally, spiritually, and socially. They’ve become more confident, compassionate, and responsible individuals who embody the school’s mission and values. VCHS programs and activities have provided opportunities for leadership and service, fostering their development into well-rounded young adults.
The spirit of VCHS has also enriched our family’s experiences in profound ways. From attending athletic events to participating in service projects, we’ve witnessed our children’s personal growth and celebrated their achievements. These shared moments have deepened our reflections on faith and strengthened our family bond.
Looking ahead, we are excited about the school’s continued evolution to meet the needs of future generations. VCHS’s dedication to balancing academic excellence with its Catholic faithbased foundation ensures that students are prepared to succeed in a complex and ever-changing world.
As our children progress through VCHS, we look forward to staying actively involved—whether through volunteering, participating in events, or supporting the school’s mission. By dedicating our time and energy, we hope to contribute to the vibrant community that has given so much to our family while nurturing the growth of the next generation.
Q&A with Father Andre Melancon ‘02 rooted in faith
Q: What role did Vandebilt Catholic High School (VCHS) play in shaping your journey to the priesthood?
A: VCHS played a vital role in nourishing my personal faith journey and vocation to the priesthood. It was during my time at Vandebilt that I developed a personal relationship with God, particularly through Wednesday night Bible studies led by Br. Ray Kuhn. These gatherings introduced me to contemplative prayer. Additionally, attending Steubenville South Youth conferences further deepened my love for the Lord, affirming a desire for the priesthood I had felt since childhood. Opportunities in campus and retreat ministries gave me a platform to lead and share Christ with my peers. Vandebilt will forever be remembered for me as the place Jesus truly became Lord of my life.
Q: Do you have a favorite memory from your time as a student at VCHS?
A: While it’s hard to choose just one, the memory that stands out most is planning and leading a prayer service on September 11, 2001, during my senior year. In the midst of great tragedy in our country, I was able to help bring the school together for prayer. I felt the beauty and fulfillment of being able to be a Christian leader.
Q: How do you see the spirit of the VCHS community thriving today?
A: The spirit of VCHS thrives because Christ remains boldly proclaimed on campus. Our school

continues to provide opportunities for students and faculty to grow in their relationship with Christ. Our Catholic identity is at the center of everything, uniting students, faculty, and supporters. The legacy that was laid down through the work and dedication of the Marianites of Holy Cross, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, and many committed lay people continues to be built upon by generous people who believe in the value of Catholic education. The pride of being a Terrier is experienced when the Vandebilt family comes together dressed in blue and gold, to support our students using their God-given gifts and talents to glorify Him.
Q: What role does faith play in shaping the VCHS community?
A: The role our Catholic faith plays in shaping the lives of our students and the broader community is essential. In the Our Father prayer, we pray, “may your kingdom come
on earth, as it is in heaven.” The mission of a Catholic school is to expand the Kingdom of God in a school community. The school gives our students, faculty and community the opportunity to know the Lord, to worship Him and to serve Him. When we do this well, we become a true beacon of His light.
Q: Any advice for current VCHS students?
A: If I could share one piece of advice with Vandebilt students, I would tell them to believe that they have gifts to offer. Our school needs the gifts of every student to be shared to make our school a place that is truly alive. Never settle for the lie that I don’t have anything to offer. God made you. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. Your life is God’s gift to you. What you do with your life is your gift back to God. Share it well during your years at Vandebilt and continue to share it all the days of your life.
rooted in spirit

For Sheri Ezell, Vandebilt Catholic High School (VCHS) is more than a school—it’s a cornerstone of cherished memories, lifelong friendships, and enduring faith. Reflecting on her years as a VCHS parent and supporter, Sheri shares how the school profoundly shaped her family.
The Ezell family, Jeremey ‘06, Jordan ‘10, and Jazmine ‘19, kept Sheri busy during their years at VCHS. Sheri fondly recalls her children’s milestones at VCHS, from homecoming festivities to supporting them in football, cheer, basketball, and track events.
Beyond sports, Sheri embraced academic celebrations, and enjoyed volunteering at school events and fundraisers, immersing herself in the vibrant VCHS spirit. Sheri made many lifelong friendships with other parents and families during her time as a parent.
The collective experiences of supporting their children created a strong sense of community among families.
Over the years, Sheri has also witnessed remarkable changes at VCHS, from renovations and technological advancements to a more diverse staff. She praises these developments as a testament to the school’s progress and commitment to inclusivity.
What sets VCHS apart, Sheri emphasizes, is its unmatched sense of community. “The spirit of faith, welcome, and tradition still resonates with my family today,” she says, highlighting how this legacy unites students, alumni, and families.
Sheri urges parents to savor every moment of their child’s VCHS journey. “Cherish their activities— especially senior year,” she advises,
whether it’s attending mass, pep rallies, or concerts. “Because once they leave I guarantee you will miss it; I know I do!”
As Sheri looks forward to her grandchildren attending VCHS, she’s eager to relive the joy and community she experienced here.
“"I applaud the hard work that is displayed at Vandebilt. Keep it up",” she says with pride.
Vandebilt Catholic Unveils the Richard "Dickie" Barker Student Union

On November 12, 2024, Vandebilt Catholic High School marked a momentous occasion with Mass, a blessing, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Richard “"Dickie"” Barker Student Union. This transformation was made possible through a generous $500,000 donation from the Barker family.

"Today is a special day for the Vandebilt Catholic community as we will have the blessing, and ribbon cutting of the Richard “Dickie” Barker Student Union,” shared Jeremy Gueldner, Vandebilt Catholic President with the student body and special guests. “As you all know on Sunday, August 29, 2021, Hurricane Ida made landfall and left Vandebilt Catholic with over $20 million dollars worth of damage. What many of you may not know is that two days earlier on that Friday, the Vandebilt Catholic Advancement Department hosted the Barker siblings to discuss the idea of renovating our cafeteria and dedicating it in honor of their father. I left that meeting on Friday excited for the future, not only of the Student Union Project but of all the projects we had planned for our campus. Little did we know of the destruction that Hurricane Ida would cause and how long our road to recovery would be."

“Today is testament more than anything else to the power of our community all of us together, walking with assurance, courage, and fresh support. On the wall in the union, just under his graduation photo, you will find Mr. Dickie’s senior quote,
'Always willing to lend a helping hand together with a laugh.'’
This is the perfect quote for this project, and one we know we had to include in our design. It is an honor for the Vandebilt Catholic Student Union to bear the name of Mr. Richard ‘Dickie’ Barker, a member of the St. Francis Class of 1953. A great father, a great grandfather, a great great-grandfather, a successful businessman, and a person who is synonymous with the ideals of Vandebilt Catholic High School: faith, family, and excellence,” Gueldner added.
This space is dedicated to Richard “Dickie” Barker, father of eight children, all of whom attended Vandebilt Catholic High School; Lisa ‘74, Ann ‘75, Richard ‘77, Michael ‘78, Kelly ‘79, Keith ‘80, Brett ‘82, and Chris ‘85. Several of the Barker families have also extended the tradition of attending Vandebilt, along with a Catholic elementary education, to their children and even fourth generation grandchildren.
“We are a Vandebilt family. Our investment in Vandebilt has been well placed. This has been a wonderful place for my children and their families,” shared Mr. Barker. “If not for the school and the values it helped to instill in my children, and the success of my children who
got into business and decided to make the contribution to renovate the old cafeteria into the new student union, my name wouldn’t be anywhere! The education I got from the Marianites and the Brothers of the Sacred heart, then having to work hard has been with me all these years. I’m more than proud to say that in my children, that work ethic is there. That Vandebilt-instilled work ethic, that started with St. Francis, and stayed as they graduated from Vandebilt…I am more than proud, I am thankful.”
“"I hope the new student union will bring a certain decorum to the student body,"” Mr. Barker shared. "You feel positive vibrations when you walk in there."
"I like the way it has been designed and laid out with the different sections and furniture. I love the Terrier fixture on the ceiling! I hope the kids approach it with a new attitude about lunch and being together.”"
