what V chs means to me

“I have so many reasons to share about what Vandebilt Catholic High School means to me. I appreciate the opportunity to attend the same high school as my father, two brothers, and sister. It’s a privilege learning from such amazing faculty, and a receiving a great education to help me grow a relationship with God. And, it’s an honor playing Vandebilt football, which has taught me what teamwork is all about.

“I love Vandebilt Catholic High School and my school life. Every day I learn new things and enjoy time with all my friends. I also have learned a lot about my faith and my relationship with God. One thing I’m going to miss the most is Friday Night Lights. I respect all my coaches and teammates, and I love how the football games bring the Vandebilt community together.

message from the president

Dear Vandebilt Catholic Community,

As another calendar year begins, each of us will look towards the future and make grand plans for what the new year will hold. Vandebilt Catholic is no different. Our 150 plus years have taught us many things: the importance of our faith, the importance of our core mission and values, and the importance of our Terrier family. As we continue to reach out to alumni and former parents through reunions, socials, and tailgate parties we do so with an eye on the future and the hope that it brings. In the Spring of 2024, our long awaited interior repairs will begin! We are excited to build a bright new future for Vandebilt Catholic that is rooted in who we are, and who we have always been. Faith, Family, Excellence.

Jeremy Gueldner

message from the principal

Dear Terrier Families,

This past summer I had the honor and privilege of visiting Lyon, France with several Partners in Mission from our Brothers of the Sacred Heart schools in this province. We studied and experienced the history of the Brothers’ Institute over the last 200 years from the perspective of teachers, staff, administrators, alumni, and of course, Brothers who have lived and worked in our schools. This opportunity to connect with the historical roots that are responsible for much of the formation of Vandebilt Catholic High School shed a clear light on the path to our future. We have a strong foundation on which we can continue to build a strong and holy sanctuary in our community.

Terriers Together,

Bernard Tunney Brother

(Joseph Carr Tunney)

Born: January 1, 1907

Bunkie, LA

In 2023, the staff of VCHS set out to build connections with the rich past of our school. In the process, we uncovered the history of our gym, which is named for Brother Bernard Tunney. Brother Tunney exemplified the values of VCHS: Faith, Family, and Excellence. In a period of his life when many people choose to focus on leisure, Brother Tunney continued to support and nurture the Catholic education community in Houma. His legacy of service connects us to our past, and his personal example points the way to building our future. Vandebilt Catholic High School is privileged to have our gym named for Brother Tunney.

Moreover, the re-discovery of the Tunney gym history clarified and refined the theme that runs through all of our work as we aspire to greater heights: Connecting With The Past, Building For The Future. We look forward to following the selfless example of Brother Tunney as we build a better future for VCHS students, and we hope you enjoy this look into our storied past!

Brother Bernard Tunney (Joseph Carr Tunney) was born in Bunkie, LA on January 1, 1907. During his elementary school years, he attended St. Francis Xavier College (now Holy Savior Menard) in Alexandria, LA, where he first came under the direction of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. After a move to Mississippi and his father’s passing, Brother Tunney returned to Alexandria and to the Brothers that inspired him. On July 7, 1920, at thirteen years old, Brother Tunney left his family and moved to Metuchen, New Jersey to attend St. Joseph’s Postulate, the house of formation for the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

As a student, Brother Tunney excelled in science and math, two subjects which he would later teach. He was also an exceptional athlete who loved sports even into his later years. While at St. Joseph’s, young Brother Tunney learned the essential qualities of a religious life, a love for physical labor, and charity to his neighbors. He

I 10 I

Welcome to the tunney Gymnasium

pronounced his first vows as a Brother on August 15, 1923, at the age of 17 and began his teaching career. In 1938, Brother Tunney graduated from Loyola College (now Loyola University New Orleans) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, and in 1947, he received his Masters degree in Education at Fordham University (New York). During the early 1940’s, he guided hundreds of young men through St. Joseph’s Postulate as the postulant master.

In 1958, Brother Tunney was assigned to the old St. Francis Boys’ School in Houma, LA, where he served as director and principal. In 1961, after suffering a heart attack, he was assigned to teach again and worked at three more schools in the

Baton Rouge and New Orleans areas, before taking his last major assignment in 1967 as principal of the Minor Seminary in Baton Rouge, LA. In 1973, after working in education for over fifty years, he chose to retire in Houma, LA. It was a place filled with many friends and the “best fishing in the country.” In retirement, Brother Tunney’s lifelong love of work kept him active maintaining the grounds at Vandebilt Catholic High School and cooking for his fellow Brothers, always ready to prepare a new dish. On campus he always carried a satchel and an instrument for picking up paper, and the grounds were immaculate in his care. Brother Tunney passed away at 71 years old during an early Mass at St. Bernadette Church in Houma, LA on June 26, 1978.

brother bernard tunney truly li V ed a life of faith , family , and excellence .

Vandebilt Catholic High School is privileged to have our gym named in his honor.

what V chs means to me

Vandebilt Catholic High School means family, love, and unity after being employed here over 20 years, graduating five children, and a grandson graduating this year. I can say that I have truly been blessed. I have enjoyed so many special moments throughout the years working, as my children attended school here. I pray for God’s continued blessings and guidance for my Vandebilt family.

building for the future

In the summer of 2023 as we were patiently waiting for our roof to be completed and for FEMA and the insurance company to move through their processes, the leadership of Vandebilt Catholic decided to take advantage of this delay and use it as an opportunity to create a MASTER PLAN for our school’s facilities.

master plan

MASTER PLANNING

is an important process for any school as it provides a long-term vision for future campus development. An important aspect of this plan is that it provides facility improvements in every area of our campus, impacting our students in a holistic way.

This MASTER PLAN is a living document and will only be as good as the input we receive from our community. We have engaged in internal conversations with our faculty and staff, but now we are looking for input from you—our Vandebilt Catholic community.

what V chs means to me

Vandebilt means to me exactly what its motto states: faith, family, and excellence. Being a student at Vandebilt gave me so many opportunities to live out and learn more about my faith, along with providing me with an amazing community of teachers, faculty, classmates, and teammates. My time at Vandebilt prepared me for the next stage in my life both in and out of the classroom, and so many of my favorite memories were made wearing blue and gold, from cheering on the Terriers in Buddy Marcello Stadium to eating lunch in the quad with my friends. No matter how long it’s been since I’ve walked its halls, Vandebilt will forever be my home, and I’ll always be proud to be a Terrier!

what V chs means to me

“I am very grateful for the education Bill (my husband) and I received at Vandebilt and that we had the opportunity to send our four daughters to the school. Now, we enjoy being grandparents and seeing our grandchildren excel in academics, activities, and athletics. Although the education is important, feeling nurtured and being grounded in faith are priceless gifts we and our family have received from the Vandebilt community. Bill and I were fortunate to celebrate our 50th class reunion in October with our fellow classmates. Vandebilt made us feel welcome and included us in all the Homecoming festivities. Reconnecting with our classmates reinforced the bond created so many years ago. It truly felt like coming home.
