Faith.Family.Excellence.

The mission of Vandebilt Catholic High School is to provide students with a holistic education that is rooted in religious values, structured through friendly discipline, nurtured by personal attention, and committed to academic excellence.
Houma Central Catholic High School
Vandebilt Catholic High School

OurHistory
The first Catholic school in Houma was opened on October 11, 1870 by the Marianites of Holy Cross. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart started with an enrollment of 25 girls. The school’s name was changed to St. Francis de Sales Academy in 1879 and boys were admitted for the first time in 1890. With the arrival of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in the early 1950s, the school divided into St. Francis de Sales Boys’ and St. Francis de Sales Girls’ High Schools.
As enrollment increased in the 1950s and 1960s, a new facility was built at the school’s current location, and the two schools merged in 1965 under the name Houma Central Catholic High School. In 1966 the school was dedicated as Vandebilt Catholic High School, named in the memory of Fr. August Vandebilt who was a longtime pastor of St. Francis de Sales Church.
Vandebilt Catholic continues to be a Partners in Mission school with the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, following, teaching, and living the charism of Father Andre Coindre.

OurPhilosophy
Based on their experiences as students in a Brothers of the Sacred Heart school, Vandebilt Catholic graduates are becoming well-rounded, faith-filled, self-disciplined, compassionate, and academically prepared men and women who respond to God’s love. (Excerpt from Brothers of the Sacred Heart - Partners in Mission)
RELIGIOUS VALUES
Because of the emphasis on spiritual growth and religious values, we hope that our graduates have a strong belief that God loves them, a willingness to respond to Jesus’ directive to love one another, a commitment to compassion, justice, and service, a desire for a deeper relationship with God through prayer, an understanding of the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church, and an intentional integration of faith and daily life.
FRIENDLY DISCIPLINE
Through friendly discipline, we hope our graduates have developed self-discipline that guides their actions, are sensitive and respond with compassion to the limitations of others, have respect for authority and approach relationships with fairness, mutual trust, and cooperation.
PERSONAL ATTENTION
Because of the caring nature and personal attention given to our students, we hope our graduates can genuinely care for others, nurture positive relationships and build community, and value themselves and others as unique children of God.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
As a result of our commitment to academic excellence, we hope our graduates are intellectually curious, are prepared to meet the academic demands of college and work, can strive to reach their intellectual potential, and use their intellectual gifts to serve others more effectively and generously.
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL:
Faith. Family. Excellence. Those three words from our school crest truly do embody the Vandebilt Catholic experience. As a Vandebilt Catholic alumna (class of 2005), a former VC teacher, current principal, and current parent of a VC student, this school is deeply ingrained in my life and my journey. My time at Vandebilt Catholic has shaped me, instilling in me faith, family, and excellence— values that continue to guide me today. The same will be true for current and future students of VCHS. We hope you will join us and become part of this legacy.
-Dr. Elise LeBoeuf ‘05 VCHS Principal

ReligiousValues

Each Vandebilt Catholic student receives approximately hours of faith instruction per year through daily religion classes.

Rooted in Catholic values and in the teachings of Jesus Christ, Vandebilt Catholic is a haven for spiritual formation.
SPIRITUAL FORMATION INCLUDES:
• DAILY RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND CLASSROOM PRAYER
With an emphasis on the importance of prayer, each school day and class period begins with students and faculty praying together.
• WEEKLY SCHOOL LITURGIES
Various school groups and teams are given the opportunity to lead weekly school-wide Masses during the year.
• MASS, ROSARIES, ADORATION, AND RECONCILIATION SERVICES
Morning Mass is held in the chapel before school. Schedules are made for group rosaries, adoration, and reconciliation services at lunch periods.
• YEARLY CLASS RETREATS
Seniors participate in an off-campus weekend retreat. Full day retreats are provided for grades 8-11 with special attention to the needs of that age group.
• SERVICE REQUIREMENTS
In an effort to promote the prayerful spirit of service, students are required to complete 15-20 service hours each school year in the categories of service to VCHS to show ownership and pride in school, participation in service day as a school to a charity, and service to the community through non-profit organization.
• SCHOOL-WIDE PROJECTS AND EXTRACURRICULAR SERVICE

The annual Christmas project is led by the senior class to promote service to the community. A school-wide Lenten project also supports the Brothers of the Sacred Heart - Mission Amatongas. School groups and teams also participate in various service projects throughout the year.
• CAMPUS MINISTRY
Campus ministry offers an additional opportunity for spiritual growth through various outlets such as Sisters in Christ, Men in Christ, Pro-Life Club, and Big Brother/Big Sister, as well as participating in the March for Life in Baton Rouge and Washington, D.C.

A personal approach to the education of the whole student is stressed at Vandebilt Catholic by offering diverse academic, athletic, and co-curricular programs to students with a large range of interests and talents.
The philosophy of Vandebilt Catholic emphasizes friendly discipline, which corrects and admonishes, but at the same time teaches and encourages. While we expect respect for authority and adherence to rules and regulations, we advocate discipline that is respectful of the Christian dignity of the individual, is consistent and fair, and is based on a relationship of mutual trust and cooperation. This is essential to teach love of God, love of neighbor, and love of learning.

COUNSELING CENTER:
The Counseling Center at Vandebilt Catholic strives to assist each individual to grow to his/her maximum potential. The center, in working with students individually and in classes, stresses moral values, coping skills, achieving full academic potential, problem solving, and planning for the future.
The school currently staffs three counselors and a counseling coordinator to provide support to students who experience difficulties such as grief, sickness, mental illness, and stress. The Counseling Center also encourages students to explore college and career readiness through Career Night, College Night, organized visits with various university representatives, and an annual Academic Signing Day for seniors. The school counselors on staff work hand-inhand with both the Dean of Student Life and the Dean of Academics to ensure that every student’s emotional and academic needs are met during their time at Vandebilt Catholic.
HOPE PROGRAM:
Vandebilt Catholic’s HOPE Program (Higher Options for People with Exceptionalities) provides students with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities access to an individualized inclusive, student-centered Catholic education. The goal is to prepare students for the transition to life after high school while continuing to emphasize academic achievement.
For more information about the HOPE Program, please contact Mrs. Gretta Jo Calongne ‘92, Director of the HOPE Program at gcalongne@htdiocese.org.

Vandebilt Catholic is accredited by Lumen. It operates with the approval of and in full compliance with the Louisiana State Department of Education and the Diocesan Office of Catholic Schools.
The curriculum exceeds the Louisiana Core 4 requirements and provides needed TOPS courses as well. Students have the opportunity to earn seven credits per year and are required to earn twenty-six units for a Vandebilt Catholic diploma. Honor graduates are required to take a minimum of ten honors courses over the four years of high school, to earn at least twenty-seven units, and to earn at least a 3.5 average.
The curriculum at Vandebilt Catholic has something for everyone:
• Standard classes give students the skills necessary to thrive in virtually any college setting.
• Honors classes are designed for advanced students who wish to delve deeper into subject matter at a more rapid pace. Placement in honors courses is based upon a placement test, standardized test scores, and academic grades. Certain criteria must be met for continued placement in honors courses.

• Advanced Placement (AP) classes allow students to learn at an accelerated pace much like a college-level course with a AP exam given at the end of the year for college credit.
• Dual Enrollment (DE) classes allow students to earn college credit while in high school.
• Skills/practical classes are offered in both math and English at all levels (8-12). Skills classes offer a college-preparatory curriculum with built-in supports for students with learning differences and disabilities. Skills classes also offer a smaller student-teacher ratio to provide more time for one-on-one attention.

OUR PLANS ARE NOW OUR PROGRESS
This past year was spent celebrating our newly renovated campus. Modern updates to our classrooms and hallways have created a more conducive learning environment and instilled a renewed sense of pride among our students and teachers. In addition to the significant improvements made throughout our academic spaces, Vandebilt Catholic has completed a multi-million dollar HVAC upgrade, greatly enhancing comfort and efficiency across campus. We have also finished replacing all exterior doors and windows with impactresistant models, ensuring that future storms will have a far smaller effect on our facilities. With so much progress over the last school year, plans are underway for our three remaining construction projects: a new Brothers Hall (business office), larger Chapel, and a new Athletics facility that will replace the field house near Buddy Marcello Stadium.
The following spaces have also been a major part of the campus renovation:
Academic Excellence Center
The Academic Excellence Center is a welcoming student-centered hub designed to support academic success, collaboration, and personal growth. The center features flexible learning spaces for quiet study, group work, and homework. With this reimagined space, the school can foster a culture for learning, time management, and focused instruction.
Chemistry Lab
The newly renovated Chemistry Lab provides students with a state-of-the-art environment for hands-on scientific discovery. Designed to support both safety and collaboration, the lab features modern equipment and updated workstations to enhance lab-based learning and experimentation. Science courses taught in this space emphasize inquiry, analysis, and real-world application of scientific principles.
Main School Office
The newly designed main school office offers a warm, modern first impression for all who enter campus. Offices for the principal and bookkeeper are located in this space, as well as a large conference room. The updated layout enhances both security and efficiency, while maintaining a welcoming environment for students, families, and visitors.
Brother Alfred Kolb Center
The Kolb Center is a dynamic, shared space on campus. Serving as both a gymnasium and performance venue, it hosts weekly school Masses, volleyball games, physical education classes, pep rallies, theater productions, and student assemblies. Designed for flexibility and community gathering, the Kolb Center supports the spiritual, athletic, artistic, and social experiences that enrich student life. The latest addition to the Kolb Center is a 20 ft. by 17 ft. LED video wall at the center of the stage.
Digital Media Center
The Digital Media Center serves as a creative and collaborative space where students explore interactive media, video and design. The center includes two instructional labs and supports student-led projects with a collaborative space in between.
Counseling Center
The Counseling Center strives to assist each individual to grow to his/her maximum potential. The new space features a conference room, offices for all 3 school counselors and a common space for discussion of college and the future.
Resource Center
The S.O.A.R. (Savoie Original Academic Resource) Program is designed to support students with officially diagnosed learning differences by providing tailored academic assistance and fostering personal growth. Housed in a newly re-imagined and student-centered space, the program features two full-size classrooms with flexible seating that can be easily reshaped to meet the needs of different learning styles and instructional formats. The space also includes a dedicated testing room, a private conference room, and three small collaborative study rooms, each intentionally designed to promote focus, flexibility, and individualized support.
Brother Bernard Tunney Gymnasium
The Tunney Gym serves our athletic programs including physical education classes, volleyball and basketball. The space has been enhanced with new flooring, fresh paint, modern acoustic sails, and a large LED video wall for advertising and interactive game graphics. The Boys Basketball locker room has also been given a face-lift with modern lockers and lighting. The gym foyer includes wall graphics to excite terrier fans attending games.
With only a few projects remaining on the campus-wide renovation list, our campus now stands as a shining example of the fortitude of our school community and reflects the caliber of the students and teachers who call Vandebilt Catholic home.
INVEST IN YOUR FUTURE:
Vandebilt Catholic is committed to providing a holistic education to all students. High priority is given to those families who have supported Catholic schools and great care is given to ensure that the school does not become available only to the social, academic, or athletic elite. Tuition and fees, along with donations to the school, make up the majority of our income.
Vandebilt Catholic offers financial aid based on need with an in-house budget of approximately $150,000. Donated funds are also available through endowed scholarships.
Families must complete the registration process to apply for financial aid. Registration applications must be submitted by February 27, 2026. FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment conducts the need analysis for Vandebilt Catholic. Families applying for financial aid will need to complete an online application at factsmgt.com by March 9, 2026.
