Dear Valle Catholic Family, Summer is one of the most exciting times to be in a school! Although it is nowhere near as exciting as when students are here, there is a lot of action on campus. Summer is when we are able to make some transformative changes to our facilities, both in the realm of preventative maintenance and campus beautification/improvements. This summer we are performing some tuck-pointing to the school building, preparing for an expansion in our Early Childhood Development Center, finishing the new Guidance Center, and making cosmetic improvements to classrooms.

At Fr. John Dempsey Field, much-needed work has been done to fix drainage and elevation issues to the football field. Through the generosity of some key donors we will finally be installing an asphalt track for our track and field athletes. This will be an amazing addition to that facility.

Valle Catholic Schools welcomes Fr. Mitchell Baer, a newly ordained priest of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, as the new associate pastor of Ste. Genevieve/ Sts. Philip and James Parishes. Fr. Baer will be greatly expanding our high school and middle school campus ministry programs and be a very active presence in our school each day. We also welcome seminarian Mr. Robbie Lawson who will be serving his pastoral internship here this year in Ste. Genevieve and teaching middle school math.

There is so much excitement moving forward into a new school year, especially considering the challenging year we have ALL had. I am very grateful for those who continue to faithfully support our mission, especially those who have supported the Fund for Valle Catholic. In only its second year, the Fund raised over $200,000, which is certainly a national record for a school with such a new annual fund; it is a testament to the many alumni and friends who are so passionate about Catholic education here at Valle. YOU, our alumni and friends, are the reason we are able to transform the lives of our students!

I pray that you and your families have a rejuvenating summer filled with fun activities and meaningful time with family and friends.

High School Happenings Greg Miller, High School Principal Hello, Valle Catholic Community!

What a difference a year can make!

Summer camps have been in full swing. Totus Tuus got to happen this year. Jour De Fete looks like it will occur and the Pork Wagon will be back in action.

COVID isn’t entirely behind us, but there are presently no plans to begin the coming year with any of the restrictions we faced earlier.

The aftereffects of the Coronavirus are still going to be felt into the first semester in a very mixed way.

In March, legislation was passed providing money to all schools in the country to continue to “meet the challenges” of the virus. In May, the legal wrangling and questions were mostly resolved and we were able to start placing orders with the funds.

The physical changes you and your students will see in the first semester (not necessarily in the first month) will include the following:

1. Larger, upgraded LED Touch displays in all rooms, capable of streaming classrooms to remote students.

2. Replacement of most of the ancient, uncomfortable desks that came from an era before computers entered classroom use.

3. Newer Cafe tables.

I stress again that these changes to our physical space may not be fully in place on the first day of school. We are not sure if installation of some of the items may disrupt the school day in minor ways. Some of you may remember how our Chromebook order took months longer to arrive than normal, last year. Our purchases come amidst every school in the country placing similar orders.

Demand is outstripping supply in an “unprecedented” fashion.

Additionally, there are other instructional technologies that will

enhance learning and introduce new student resources and opportunities.

Our faculty will be training on those platforms before the school year begins.

So this remains a time of extraordinary change tin the field of education as a whole and at Valle in particular. We know that our skilled staff is up to the challenge.

We know that, bolstered by the faith, hope, and charity of our Catholic sacraments and culture, the Valle student has incredible adaptability and resilience. Thank you all again for your support and patience.

We survived! The 20-21 school year was one for the books. There was a lot of unknown, especially with the young students we serve. But, they survived and we did too. If you asked them, they wouldn’t know it was different than any other year. Our PreK students who were screened for Kindergarten Readiness scored in the 74th percentile overall … proof their educational foundation was still as successful as in year’s past.

We will start school in August this year with no COVID restrictions! YAY! Our theme for the year is “Let your Light Shine”, encouraging students and faculty to be a light for others.

As we look forward, we will watch 22 of our preschool students move up to PreK and meet 6 new friends there.

We will welcome 24 new students to preschool to join the 5 who will stay in that classroom. We had an amazing response to our Open House and Registration this spring and did not have enough classrooms to accommodate all the families that wanted to take advantage of our program. Thanks to some supportive and forward thinking administration, we have decided to add another classroom to our program. Next fall, we will be able to serve about 54 children each day and we are ALMOST full! Our program continues to grow and provide a high quality Early Childhood educational experience under the direction of educated and dedicated teachers.

We welcome Brooke Lurk Helms and Pam Ernst to our team. Read more about the great things happening in the ECDC on page 18.

Valle Catholic ECDC is a special place for every kid, every day.

We look forward to having our dedicated faculty return to the classroom in the fall and are excited to welcome new Warriors to the team!

Mrs. Laykin Donze will teach third grade. Mr. Dustin Wengert will teach social studies and science to 4th and 5th grades. Mr. Robbie Lawson will teach middle school math. Mr. Lawson is a seminarian for the Archdiocese of St. Louis who has been assigned to Ste. Genevieve Parish for his year-long pastoral internship. With previous teaching experience in mathematics, he will be a blessing to Old Valle!

We have expanded our middle school electives to include Aerospace Science with Fr. Nemeth, and the introduction of a Model Rocketry Club that Father will moderate for the middle school and high school. Our newly ordained associate pastor, Fr. Baer, will enhance students’ knowledge of Catholicism with his “ Cool Things About Catholicism” elective. Mr. Andy Wilkerson, Director of Maintenance, and other volunteers, will give students a hand-on experience on “how things work” in an exciting, active elective. These are just a few new electives that will join our other electives that will be offered in our middle school. We are also pleased to announce that Vincentian Marian Youth will be expanding their youth group to include middle school aged students. VMY’s middle school youth group will meet each Wednesday after school and will focus on the topic of prayer this year.

Focus on Faculty

ay “Hello” to Laykin McGowan Donze, member of the Valle Catholic Grade School faculty! Laykin will teach third grade at Valle Catholic.

She was a substitute teacher this past school year, filling in for Mrs. Roth’s maternity leave. We are so glad to have her join us full-time!

Laykin attended Valle Catholic from K-12 and graduated in 2017. She is the daughter of Dennis and Sheila McGowan of Ste. Genevieve. She has two brothers, Aidan ‘19 and Grayson, who is in 8th grade.

She married Mitchell Donze ‘16 in April 2021. She enjoys spending time at Donze Lake, playing board games, spending time with friends and family, crafting, and going to Target.

Q. What is your favorite part of your job and why?

A. The best part of my job is

working with students. I love watching them grow and learn new things. The excitement I see in their faces when they learn a new skill brings me so much joy.

Q. Why did you choose this profession/field?

A. I have always loved working

with children so becoming a teacher was a very easy choice for me. I also had many great teachers while at Valle. These teachers showed me how important it is to have a teacher who is involved and invested in their students’ lives.

Q. What technology applications

have you utilized in the classroom?

A. Technology is something that I

think all students should learn how to use. There are many different ways to incorporate technology into

the classroom. I hope to teach my students how to use basic programs such as Google Docs, Google Slides and Google Classroom, as well as incorporating technology into my daily lessons.

Q. What strengths do you bring to

Valle Catholic? What do you hope to incorporate in your classroom in the future?

A. I hope to bring fun and exciting

ideas to Valle. I hope to have a classroom environment that makes my students feel comfortable, allows them to be themselves and push themselves to learn new things.

Q. What does being a Warrior mean to you?

A. To me being a Warrior means

that you are always trying to be your best self and live a life with God while helping others along the way.

Hannah Elizabeth Barnes is the daughter of John Barnes and Amanda Barnes. She plans to attend Jefferson College and study radiologic technology.

Drew David Bauman is the son of Todd and Connie Bauman. He plans to attend Mineral Area College and study business management.

Bryna Elizabeth Blum is the daughter of Kristopher and Shannon Blum.

She plans to attend University of Missouri-Columbia and study health science.

Mason Robert Brewster is the son of Ben and Kim Brewster. He plans to join the Carpenters Union and will be working for McCarthy Construction.

Austin David Burnett is the son of Daniel Burnett and Chad and Deborah Wolk. He plans to attend

Mineral Area College and major in agriculture and business.

Gabriel Andrew Elbert is the son of Michael Elbert and Katie Elbert. He is employed by the Big Bend Woods Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. He will also be pursuing his musical career.

Hannah Elizabeth Fowler is the daughter of Brent and Laura Fowler.

She plans to attend Maryville University and major in forensic psychology.

Cora Ann Catherine Friedman is the daughter of Michael and Tania Friedman. She plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University and major in communication disorders.

Jayden Paul Gegg is the son of Joe and Kelly Gegg. He plans to attend Jefferson College and major in Accounting. He will also be a member of the Jefferson College baseball team.

Matthew Stephen Gettinger is the son of Steve and Margaret Gettinger.

He plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University and major in accounting.

Gage Joseph Heil is the son of Jeff and Kelly Heil. He is the recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2021 Model of Justice Award. He plans to attend Missouri University of Science and Technology and major in nuclear engineering.

Ana Nicole Hendrixson is the daughter of Steve and Cassi Hendrixson. She plans to attend University of Missouri-Columbia and major in clinical laboratory sciences with the goal of becoming a clinical pathologist.

Carter Allan Hoog is the son of Jeremy & Christine Hoog. He was awarded Valle Boy. He will attend Missouri University of Science and Technology and major in electrical engineering. He will also be a member of the Miners basketball team.

Delaney Marie MacMillan is the daughter of Mike and Kim MacMillan. She plans to attend Maryville University and major in nursing.

Patrick Thomas McDowell is the son of Tyler and Kathryn McDowell. He plans to join the military.

Mitchell Paul Meyer is the son of Dean and Jessica Meyer. He plans to attend Mineral Area College and major in Math education. He will also be a member of the Mineral Area track and field team.

Kolten Gregory Naeger is the son of Greg and Dawn Naeger. He plans to join the Electrical Union and enter the apprenticeship program.

Lindsey Kay Naeger is the daughter of Mike and Shelley Naeger. She plans to attend Southeast Health College of Nursing and Health Sciences and major in radiologic technology.

Eva Marlene Oberle is the daughter of Andre and Krista Oberle. She plans to attend University of Missouri Columbia and major in veterinary medicine.

Brennden Jacob Pfaff is the son of Jacob and Stephanie Pfaff. He plans to attend University of Missouri Columbia and major in biochemistry with the goal to become a physician.

Mary Therese Roth is the daughter of David & Sheila Roth. She plans to attend Truman State University and major in English.

Macy Elizabeth Schweigert is the daughter of Matt and Jenna Schweigert and Ryan and Kylie Naeger. She plans to attend University of Missouri-Columbia and major in project management with a minor in construction management.

Logan Martin Sellers is the son of Luther and Angela Sellers. He plans to attend Mineral Area College and major in political science.

Macy Lynn Shuh is the daughter of Dale and Patty Shuh. Macy is Salutatorian of the Class of 2021 and was awarded Valle Girl. She plans to attend Saint Louis University and major in health sciences on the pre-med track.

Riley Jo Siebert is the daughter of Byron and Jennifer Siebert.

She plans to attend John A. Logan College and major in communications and political science. She will also be a member of Logan’s volleyball team.

Kyle Joseph Steiger is the son of Ken and Karen Steiger. He will be attending Jefferson College and major in education.

Cory Joseph Stoll is the son of Jody and Amy Stoll. He plans to attend Mineral Area College and major in early childhood education. He will also be a member of the Mineral Area track and field team.

Nicole Elizabeth Valle is the daughter of Randy and Annette Valle. She plans to attend Jefferson College and major in veterinary technology.

Warriors Set Records!

Basler Finishes Career in the Record Books Connor Basler ‘16 recently ended his collegiate baseball career by becoming the stolen base leader in SEMO baseball history. Basler stole his 53rd base in the NCAA regional making him the all-time leader for steals in his career. Basler was a main stay in the Redhawks infield for most of his five years at SEMO.

He finished his Valle Catholic basketball career with 1,746 points and is the all-time leading scorer. The previous record holder was Bryan Meyer ‘98 with 1,646.

Basler is no stranger to the record books. As a senior at Valle Catholic he had 70 hits placing him #1 all-time in MSHSAA record books.

His amazing senior year at Valle Catholic resulted in being named a 3rd team All-American. In addition to baseball, Basler was an all-state football player and all-conference basketball player while at Valle Catholic.

Basler stated, “Throughout my playing careers at SEMO and Valle Catholic, I’ve made so many memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. I couldn’t be more thankful for everyone that helped mold me, not only into the best player I could be, but the man I have become today. Thinking back, the amount of love and support that I received the entire time makes me feel so blessed and forever grateful.”

Father John Dempsey Track and Field Gets a Facelift

Through the wonderful generosity of time, talent, and treasure Father John Dempsey Track and Field is currently undergoing much needed upgrades. Nick Fallert ‘98 has spearheaded the project that entails all of the following updates: new draining and irrigation, new Ironheart bermuda grass field, and a new six-lane asphalt track.

The project began in late May and will be complete for the Warriors’ first home game on September 24th.

We look forward to celebrating all of those who donated to this project in any way.

The following is a list of those who donated time, talent, and equipment to the project. Once the project is complete we will list all of those who donated monetarily to bring this dream to reality. Funding is still needed to complete the project.

Catching up with Sister Pat! A Walk Down Memory Lane with Sr. Pat Murphy, CSJ and Sr. Pat Gloriod, CSJ Valle Catholic Grade School students in the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s were blessed to be taught by not one, but two Sr. Pats!

Sr. Pat Murphy, CSJ began teaching at Valle Catholic in 1985. Sr. Pat Gloriod, CSJ began her Valle Catholic teaching career in 1984. Both women attended the retirement Mass and celebration for Linda Kertz and Donna Herzog in the spring. Parents and faculty in attendance were excited to see these women after many years! We were able to set up a Zoom interview and find out where their journeys have taken them following their days at Valle Catholic.

develop a fine arts program for the students who did not participate in band. The program included art and music appreciation, computer, and drama.

Before coming to Valle Catholic, Sr. Pat M. lived in Kansas City. She had retired from teaching and was working in a parish office. She returned to the St. Louis area, where her parents were living. She landed at Valle Catholic, where Sr. Kathleen Eggleston was the principal.

Sr. Pat Gloriod taught 8th grade homeroom. Her emphasis was English, but she was happy to teach whatever landed on her plate. She enjoyed working with students on arts and crafts projects. Many students will remember her as the teacher who made candles. She also had her mother’s pre-electric sewing machine in her classroom.

She taught students to quilt, stating the boys had a much easier time operating the machine than the girls.

The women met at Sr. Pat Murphy’s apartment in The Village of Nazareth in south St. Louis. The Village is a retirement community for the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sr. Pat Gloriod lives in the South City area of St. Louis with two other Sisters. Both taught in Old Valle, teaching 7th and 8th grades.

Sr. Pat Murphy taught 7th grade homeroom. Her specialty was math and computers. She also helped

Sr. Pat Gloriod began her teaching career in 1969 at St. Rita’s in Bonita Park. She spent four years in Marietta, GA and then nine years teaching at St. Gregory in St. Ann, MO. Both Sisters lived in the convent, today’s Parish Center. Their bedrooms were on the top floor.

The middle floor included the living room, dining room, kitchen and chapel. Sr. Mary Herman was the senior sister who cooked meals on school nights.

After moving from the convent, the Sisters relocated to the Dorlu House across from Valle Catholic High School. They had a beautiful home and enjoyed the large pecan trees in the yard. Sr. Pat G. remembers planting an elm tree in the yard.

Other Sisters of St. Joseph who were on campus during their years at Valle Catholic were Sr. Loretta Dugan, Sr. Catherine Zanich, Sr. Mary Jo Ritter, Sr. John Mandeville, Sr. Carol Gerondale, Sr. Mary Ann Hilgemann, Sr. Gretchen Wagner and Sr. Jane Schaper. Father Everding, Msgr. Knight, Fr. O’Connor, Fr. Witte, Fr. Baer, and Fr. John Johnson were also part of the parish.

They enjoyed the community and closeness of the residents in Ste.

STUDENTS WORK ON TRIANGLE CONSTRUCTION IN SR. PAT MURPHY’S CLASS Genevieve. They always felt safe and walked the community. Sr. Pat M. recalled walking and picking up cans. She would use the recycling money to purchase math supplies.

After leaving Valle Catholic, Sr. Pat M. was offered her “dream job” in Hawaii. It was temporarily put on hold, as she needed to stay in St. Louis with her mother. Shortly after, the opportunity reappeared and she spent six years in Hawaii.

Her role was to setup computer labs and design curriculum. Following her stay in Hawaii, she was asked by a Sister to help in Uganda, Africa. Over the next 10 years, she spent about 7 years teaching math and helping set up a computer lab.

The lab ran on a generator, so they spent most of their time rebooting.

She celebrated her 80th birthday in Africa before retiring.

Sr. Pat Gloriod also taught in Hawaii after leaving Valle Catholic.

She was there for 10 years, and liked working with multi-cultural students. She said students and families were so grateful to receive Catholic education. The cost of living is very high and many families worked multiple jobs to pay for education. She mainly taught 5th grade.

She returned to the mainland in 2003 and reconnected with

Sr. Kathleen Eggleston in Washington, MO. The two women lived together for the next 16 years.

Sr. Pat taught at St. Vincent’s in Marthasville. The last 10 years of her career were spent teaching 1st grade.

She loved teaching children to read.

Now that both Sisters are retired, they spend much of their time helping others. Sr. Pat M. chauffeurs residents in her community. She still downloads math problems from Math Counts for fun! Sr. Pat G. helps at the Motherhouse and distributes communion to homebound women in her parish. Both enjoy reading, quilting and spend much of their time doing this activity. Sr. Pat M. still has a quilt on her bed that she made at Valle Catholic. The mothers of her students had given her material for Christmas. She returned from Christmas break with an almost-completed quilt. Students helped with the finishing touches and added their names to the sham.

Although it is faded today, it is still much loved.

Sr. Pat G. remembers the days at Old Valle, teaching with the windows open. Students were subject to the outside street noises, including city crews jackhammering, no A/C and the wasps! Sr. Pat M. recalls the hands-on math projects, including building triangles with spaghetti noodles and marshmallows. Both speak fondly of their students and memories of Valle Catholic Schools!

Improving the Student Experience

Students were recognized by faculty members for academic and character achievements, along with the Top 10 in each class.

Every year, Valle Catholic Schools seeks to improve our student experience.

When returning to the 2020-21 school year following the pandemic, the need to expand our counseling services was noted. Mrs. Carrie Gegg ‘95 is the Valle Catholic Schools Guidance Counselor. She not only works with students as an academic resource, she also provides counseling services. The Ste. Genevieve Community Counseling Center also has helped the staff at Valle Catholic Schools with additional counselors.

Junior, Camryn Basler, received the Above and Beyond Student Ambassador Award. She was nominated by Mrs. Jill Metzger, who leads the Ambassador Program at Valle Catholic.

At Valle Catholic, we recognize the importance of reaching the whole child.

We understand that to help a student reach his/her full potential, we must understand the complex emotional and social issues impacting our students.

In a world witnessing a rise in anxiety in school age children and teens, we must partner with families in addressing the mental health needs of our Valle Catholic family.

Mrs. Metzger said Camryn, “is willing to give tours, responds promptly to emails, and helps with events, including dressing up like a princess. Being an ambassador requires help on evenings and Sunday mornings, which isn’t always what people would like to do. Cam shows up with a smile and a positive attitude. I am so grateful for her.”

In order to provide more resources and opportunities for students to receive help from trained counselors and a conducive, warm space in which to have those conversations, the Guidance Center was born. Renovations in the bottom floor of the Parish Center quickly began. This much needed and welldeserved space will be open to our students in the fall of 2021.

Camryn is the daughter of Chris ‘94 and Tina Bauman Basler ‘95 of Bloomsdale.

The Guidance Center includes two private counseling rooms. One is designed with elementary students in mind. The larger room provides a setting for individual students and if needed, family members. The great room is a hub for Valle Catholic students, with a a relaxed atmosphere where students can meet with friends, enjoy lunch or attend club meetings. The space will be available for visits with college admissions reps, and for Mrs. Gegg to help Valle High School students plan their next steps.

Nurses are remarkable people. My respect for them has grown significantly throughout my son’s pulmonary hypertension (PH) and transplant journey. Their job requires important skills, intelligence, patience, persuasiveness, compassion, energy, emotional control, a strong stomach — the list is endless. And I can’t think of a more suitable person to fulfill these qualifications than a mother who has experience caring for a PH child.

Carrie Walls is one of those remarkable people pursuing nursing, all while caring for a child battling PH and several other rare diseases. In an email interview, Carrie discussed both experiences and how she manages them.

Carrie has three sons: Nolan, 16, Bennett, 14, and Triston, 9. Triston was born with two ventricular septal defects, two atrial septal defects, and an extremely rare congenital heart defect, cor triatriatum. He also has a rare genetic disorder, megalencephaly-capillary malformation syndrome, which Carrie explained comes with global developmental delays.

“He is nonverbal. This has probably been the most challenging because he is unable to tell us if he is feeling different, if he is having any pain or having trouble breathing. I have to pay close attention to all the signs and symptoms that he shows.”

Triston’s medical journey has been difficult. At 7 months, he had his first open-heart surgery. At 10 months, he went into respiratory distress, had an emergency cardiac catheterization, was diagnosed with pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS), and had another open-heart surgery. Triston was diagnosed with PH during his recovery.

Over the past six years, Triston has fought high pressures and undergone two more open-heart surgeries and 19 cardiac catheterizations. But with a thankful heart, Carrie shared that for the last two years — ironically, the entire time she was in nursing school — both Triston’s PVS and PH were stable.

But one week after starting her last prerequisite class, Triston was admitted to the hospital and Carrie almost dropped out of nursing school. Carrie explained that after spending so much time in the hospital with Triston in the first four years of his life, she realized how short life is, and that no one is promised tomorrow. She was also inspired by the nurses who cared for her son.

“They truly made the time in the hospital bearable. They treated us like family and really changed our lives. I knew I wanted to give back to other families in the way nurses helped us.” In January 2018, Carrie decided to start the process. After taking a college chemistry class she applied to a nursing program and was accepted.

“I talked to my professor who fought hard for me to stay in her class. I prayed about it and begged God that if I was meant to be a nurse to please make it possible for me to learn and continue to be the best for Triston, too,” Carrie wrote. Triston’s journey influenced Carrie’s decision to become a nurse. She had considered it before but thought she would never have the time or money to go through with it.

When studying congenital heart defects and pulmonary issues, Carrie had the opportunity to tell Triston’s story to her classmates. She used the impact nurses had on her family as an example of how their career paths will do the same for many in the years to come. Carrie believes that nurses who have lived on the other side of the fence can bring understanding and perspective to not only PH families, but to the physicians and nurses caring for them.

If you are a PH parent considering a career in nursing, Carrie’s advice is: “Just do it!”

We Are Growing!

Brooke Lurk Helms and Pam Ernst will be joining our already talented Early Childhood faculty!

Brooke comes to us from St. Louis Children’s Hospital. She has her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development and Family Studies. Brooke will be leading the Preschool Classroom. Pam has her Associate’s Degree in Education and will be assisting Brooke in that class!

This is a place where children can be an astronaut, star in a rock band, play in an igloo, make slime, or dig in sand or dirt. We build towers, garages, castles and confidence. We learn to believe in God, prayer and ourselves. We stretch our bodies and our minds.

Summertime Fun! Our Summer STREAM program was once again a success! We had a full house of students who enjoyed weekly themed activities. Students had the opportunity to learn about dinosaurs by visiting the Ste. Genevieve Museum Learning Center. They learned about the arts, including dance, tie dye and sculpture. We got to make butter, ice cream and learn about 4H. We designed obstacle courses, had a reading rumpus and a glow in the dark dance party!

We had many special visitors, including a yoga instructor, a farmer, the fire department and teachers who shared their knowledge about Germany and Guatemala. We enjoyed a reptile experience with Reptile Steve, getting to touch and hold a lot of creepy-crawly friends! Weekly water play was also fun!

Valle Catholic Schools also hosted Family Night at the Waterpark on June 11, 2021. All school families were invited to a night at the River Rapids Waterpark in Ste. Genevieve compliments of Valle Catholic Schools. Students enjoyed seeing their friends after a few weeks of summer vacation!

Celebrating Dedication to Valle Catholic As we wrapped up the 2020-21 school year, Valle Catholic Schools celebrated the retirement of five dedicated members of the Valle Catholic family.

Mrs. Donna Herzog taught at Valle for over 30 years. She taught on the top floor where learning was always full of love, meaning and a whole lot of fun. She worked hard to create memories that will last a lifetime for her students. Whether observing a butterfly emerge from it’s chrysalis or watching Mrs. Herzog zip down the hallway in her vintage roller skates, her students always knew something exciting was going to happen in Mrs. Herzog’s room.

Debbie (Jokerst) Wolk was a student in her first class. This year was special as Debbie’s son, Landon, was a student in her last class. Mrs. Herzog will be remembered for her spirited personality and her love of the school’s butterfly garden. Students in her class honored her with a plaque in the garden.

Mrs. Linda Kertz also taught at Valle Catholic for over 30 years. She exuded the virtues of kindness and gentleness, and had such a way of reaching all learners. She was always willing to move grade levels and classrooms for the good of the school, sometimes even in consecutive years. Mrs. Kertz was known for her “all in” attitude. She always put in extra hours before and after school to work hard for her students and learn new things. She enjoyed making the subjects she taught engaging for her students. Her fourth and fifth grade students celebrated her by giving her a tree to plant.

Mrs. Carol Klein has been a teacher’s aide at Valle for over 20 years. She’s impacted the lives of so many students, from preschool to high school. Mrs. Klein could be found in various classrooms working with children, on the playground and in the cafeteria. Mrs. Klein always said yes to whatever was asked of her.

Grade school students and faculty loved her willingness to help wherever she was needed, even at a moment’s notice! Valle Catholic will miss Mrs. Klein’s big heart, smile and hugs.

Mrs. Norma Basler was part of the custodial team at Valle for the last six years. Mrs. Weiler said that Norma “made our school sparkle.” Not only did she clean the school, she will also be remembered for her delicious cupcakes as a treat to students! Mrs. Mary Naeger worked in the Valle Catholic cafeteria for over 14 years. Mary served the students lunch every day and did so with a smile on her face! She will be missed by all!

The retirees and their families enjoyed an early breakfast in the DuBourg Centre. Father Nemeth thanked them for their dedication to Catholic schools and for following their calling from God. After breakfast, they were honored at Mass. Mrs. Overmann, grade school principal, Drake Meyer, seventh grade, and Mrs. Jan Weiler, sixth grade homeroom, shared fond memories of the women while the students presented flowers and a special rosary to each of them.

It was a great surprise to see other Valle Catholic retired teachers present for the Mass! Sr. Pat Gloriod, Sr. Pat Murphy, Miss Peggy Thompson, Mrs. Theresa Kirchmer, Mrs. Nan Evers, Ms. Sara Menard, Mrs. Mary Jean Hoog and Mrs. Joyce White were in attendance and welcomed the retirees to the “club”.

Sharing the Magic!

Valle Catholic held their Community Event, “Princess Tea” on March 7, 2021 in the DuBourg Centre. It was the 2nd year for this magical event, where princesses big and small enjoy dressing up, dancing, making crafts, having refreshments and visiting with their favorite Disney princesses.

Valle Catholic Centennial: Building a Tradition, Leaving a Legacy For over 30 years, Valle Catholic Schools Foundation has served as an independent financial source for Valle Catholic Schools by gifting over $5,000,000 to support and preserve the school you cherish. The primary mission of Valle Catholic Schools Foundation is to financially support exceptional faith-based Catholic education for our community families today, tomorrow, and for future generations. The fundamental goals of Valle Catholic Schools Foundation are targeted to academic excellence and long-term financial sustainability.

We strive to support the vision of a school that is grounded in faith and tradition yet prepares the students to do well in the world and gives them the moral compass to do good.

We are thrilled to report that because of supportive donors like yourself, in 2020 Valle Catholic Schools Foundation received over $1,200,000 and are happy to inform that recently in 2021 we have committed another $116,000 to support Valle Catholic Schools. We believe this generosity is because so many of our supporters understand that the Valle Catholic Schools Foundation truly makes the most of your gifting. We are managed by a local board of directors, our funds are managed locally by HSB Financial Advisors, LLC., and we control our overhead costs to less than 2%, a percentage that is unheard of in the non-profit industry. For every dollar you donate, $0.98 cents go directly to support Valle Catholic Schools.

Valle Catholic Schools is on a positive trajectory thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends, a committed faculty, and a strong administrative team. In 2025, Valle Catholic will be celebrating its 100th Anniversary which is a remarkable milestone for any Catholic school. Mr. Don was generous and kind, especially to our students and his co-workers. He was a hard worker who truly made Valle Catholic a better place! We are happy to share that Mr. Don was an organ donor.
