Dear Valle Catholic Family,

T

hus far, 2020 has been a challenge for Valle Catholic Schools just as it has been for the rest of the world. So many scenarios and things we faced as a world, nation, and community were without precedent. For the world of education, this was a time for great challenge, but also a time to show great strength and determination. I wish I could adequately express my amazement at the valiant effort made by both students and teachers to continue meaningful instruction during the period of remote learning. Teachers had to grapple with the skills needed to communicate effectively and meaningfully with their students. Students and families had to grapple with learning at home, overcoming challenges with technology, connectivity, and juggling multiple courses and varied modes of instruction. For teachers, especially, this was a very difficult time since none of us entered education to teach to a computer screen. However, everyone performed admirably and I can confidently say that the students of Valle Catholic will be far ahead of their contemporaries throughout the country because of this. We should all be extremely proud to support Valle Catholic after this historic period of time. Every senior in high school wants to have a senior year that they will never forget; the class of 2020 has achieved this goal! We are so proud of the men and women of the class of 2020 for their grit and determination during their final quarter of high school. While there is understandable sadness that many “lasts” were cut short unexpectedly, the exciting future that lies ahead shines more brightly than the darkness of these past months. We pray for our graduates who now join the distinguished ranks of Valle Catholic Alumni. Best of luck to you all! I hope you will enjoy this summer edition of the Valle Values and be as excited as I am for the bright future and amazing things happening at Valle Catholic! Committed to excellence,

Fr. Edward Nemeth President

High School Happenings Greg Miller, High School Principal

W

hat a year it has been! We hope you and your families are safe and well.

While earning my Master’s degree in Theology, one of the Biblical lessons that was deeply impressed upon me was that every challenge or crisis carried within it an opportunity and potential blessing. This is a powerful theme that runs throughout both Old and New Testaments. In the midst of the challenges of pandemic, economic disruption, and civil unrest, we are still presented with the truths that God is with us and opportunities for growth and blessing will continue to present themselves.

The only question truly is, are we rooting ourselves in the presence of God and asking for His wisdom and guidance? Before school closures began in March, our faculty had already begun preparing for virtual instruction. Over the remainder of the academic year, they learned and utilized new technologies, recreated some of their content and teaching approaches, and rose to the challenge of providing quality remote education. While I heard of other schools that sometimes didn’t provide the first batch of virtual work until after Easter (April 12th), and other districts throughout the country that gave up on grading and rigor altogether, Valle’s faculty had already been nearly a month into virtual

instruction. Our teachers should be praised and commended for their incredibly hard work, as should our students too. During this summer season, I’ve heard our students are continuing to do wonderful things, assisting in healthcare and childcare settings, and many are working at Eric Scott to provide PPE for epidemic response. The Valle student remains an example of the well rounded student athlete, working on the field and court, in the (virtual) classroom setting, serving the community, and persevering through hard work. Especially in our seniors, the Class of 2020, do we see a refusal to be conquered by the adversity of our times. In this corner of the world and in those places our graduates will go on to touch, there is still bright and promising hope. This summer will hold many challenges for Valle as an institution. Like every school throughout the world, we’ll be strategizing to find ways to deliver safe instruction on-site and preparing contingencies for more virtual instruction. Schools in other countries without summer break are trying to implement measures for face-toface education. We’ll be watching them closely as August approaches and communicate with you the best strategies discovered in the next two months. There are members of our community who’ve been impacted adversely by the economic situation worldwide. Those with difficulty paying tuition will be enrolled in the

3

reconstituted “Work Grant Program”. Should you wish to support them financially, it would be appreciated. We also may face challenges this coming year in finding substitute teachers. Many of our existing subs are experienced educators who fall into the group most vulnerable to adverse COVID outcomes. Just as some nursing homes are shortstaffed due to nurses who’ve contracted COVID, the potential of a local outbreak would also quickly pose challenges in presenting on-site instruction. If you might be interested in assisting as a new sub, please reach out to us during the summer months. We thank all those who’ve approached us to provide financial assistance or offered to help in acquiring the technology and services necessary to deliver virtual instruction.

Valle is a wonderful community and we depend on the continued support and prayers of community members and alumni to continue our tradition. As we work this summer, we thank you for all you do on behalf of Valle Catholic Schools! Long live Christ the King! Mr. Greg Miller Principal

T

he 2019/2020 school year did not end as planned, to say the least. As the pandemic spread across the globe and schools were closed, we continued to support our families and students in new ways. We made drive by visits to remain connected to our students, we dropped off crafts and toys to keep children engaged in play and we utilized the SeeSaw app to keep children learning while at home. We were able to work on letter and number recognition and formation, opposites, positional vocabulary, and many other cognitive concepts. We encouraged gross motor play with sidewalk chalk, bubbles and videos of dances and songs. We worked our fine motor skills to manipulate a mouse and a touch screen. And we read many, many books together. While we hope to never school this way again, we feel blessed that we were able to stay in touch and continue our learning during this difficult time in history. We held our PreK Celebration, an exciting night at the drive-in honoring the Movie Stars that are moving on to Kindergarten. Our Summer Program is open, emphasizing Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Religion and Math. We are looking forward to the 2020/2021 school year and the new friendships yet to be made. All of us at the Valle Catholic Early Childhood Development Center wish you much health and peace this summer!

School News Amanda Overmann Grade School Principal

A

s COVID-19 shut down the world, Valle Catholic Grade School had to adjust our teaching styles. Our teachers went above and beyond to deliver quality content to students from the safety of their homes. Our teachers changed the face of education for years to come. They learned how to teach remotely while still maintaining their own families and personal health. Our teachers at Valle Catholic Grade School are an amazing testament to what it means to be “All In”. While there were struggles to ensure every student had access to technology, our teachers made the best of the ever evolving new way to educate. As we look forward, and try to plan for “what ifs” we would like to move toward every student having a device in the classroom. If each student were to have a device, he or she could be instructed on how to use the device in the event we need to utilize distance learning in the future. The summer months are used for planning for the upcoming school year. The 2020/21 school year holds many exciting changes. We will have two sections of kindergarten. Mrs. Julie Holland will teach one section of kindergarten with the other section to be taught by Carrie Weiler. Mrs. Donna Herzog will continue her fabulous work teaching 1st Grade in her same room. Mrs. Amy Wood will move to the top floor and teach 1st grade alongside Mrs. Herzog. Ms. Courtney Friedman will teach 2nd grade. Mrs. Kelsey Roth will move to

4

3rd grade. These two ladies will work together to teach math and ELA. Mrs. Roth will teach ELA and Ms. Friedman will teach math to 2nd and 3rd grades. Mrs. Kertz gets to keep her classroom, however she will change teaching roles and switch to religion and science for 4th and 5th grades, along with a 4th grade homeroom. Mrs. Michelle Basler will be moving from Old Valle to teach math and social studies for 4th and 5th grades. She will have the other section of 4th grade for homeroom. Mrs. Pam Basler will be homeroom teacher for 5th grade and continue to teach ELA for 4th and 5th grades. The Middle School will be housing two new teachers next year. Melissa LaRose will join the faculty as the middle school science teacher. We are looking for a new middle school math teacher. Mrs. Jan Weiler will have one section of 6th grade homeroom, but will teach religion to 6-8th grades. One of the new teachers will take the other section of 6th grade. Mr. Tyler Search will stay in his current role as 7th grade homeroom and middle school social studies teacher. Mrs. Elizabeth Bertrand will also continue her role as 8th grade homeroom and ELA teacher. The other new teacher will take the other 8th grade section.

valleschools.org finally got the chance after Chrysler shut down in 2008.

Q. What technology applications

have you utilized in the classroom?

A. I have used a variety of apps

Focus on Faculty

S

ay “Hello” to Ron Taylor, member of the Valle Catholic High School faculty! Ron teaches business and computer classes in the high school. He will be part of the coaching staff for the 2020-21 girls basketball team. Ron lives near Potosi and has one son, Aidan, who is 15. Ron started working in his grandpa’s bakery when he was six, until he was 26 years old. In between that he worked in retail management for 10 years, at Chrysler for 15 years and in sales for one year. He has been teaching since 2010. He was at St. Rose of Lima in DeSoto before arriving at Valle Catholic. He has an MBA from Maryville and a Master’s in Teaching and a Master’s in Education Administration.

Q. What is your favorite part of your job and why?

A. My favorite part of the job is to get to work with great people

and teach amazing kids. All of my students this past year were eager to learn not just what was in the textbooks, but also dig deeper into the field of study. This makes teaching fun and enjoyable. Hanging out with the other teachers is fun for me because we are all different in ways but we mesh perfectly. They are a great bunch of people to work with.

Q. Why did you choose this profession/field?

A. I have been fortunate to be in

retail management and then the auto industry so I have seen the workforce from both sides of the negotiating table. I have coached before too and I enjoyed breaking down instructions/ tasks into smaller steps that made it easier for everyone. This helps to teach business students of the steps to be successful. My parents and former parochial school teachers would tell me to teach what I have learned and find better ways to do it. I had wanted to go into the education field about 20 years ago and then I

5

from when I taught astronomy and physical science to now where I teach business and computer apps. I teach the students how to program first and then code. My first major was computer programming back in the mid 80s. These are the people who built up the industry to make it easier to learn coding. But programmers are the backbone to creating software so I like to give my students options to take into the field after they graduate. Also the students have taught me new apps too since it is virtually impossible to keep up with every new program/ language out in the market today.

Q. What strengths do you bring to

Valle Catholic? What do you hope to incorporate in your classroom in the future?

A. I believe my strengths include

my faith and how it has led me during my life. I teach my students that in the business world with large amounts of money and power, it is easy to lose sight. I try to instill in them to know between right and wrong by doing no wrong to do right. I have many years of different work experience in various fields and I can use this knowledge/experience when teaching business. I hope to incorporate in each student that their time at Valle Catholic was one of the best times in their young lives. I hope they look back years from now and know that I taught respect by giving respect. I taught them things that went deeper than a textbook and were useful to them. I would also like to expand the number of business classes that we offer.

Valle Catholic Alum Opens Resilient Clinic Justin Roth ’14 Opens Chiropractic & Sports Performance Clinic in Ste. Genevieve Justin Roth ’14 has always been involved in sports and movement in general from a very young age. Justin played multiple sports throughout his time at Valle Catholic, including winning State Championships on the baseball diamond and football field. His baseball talent led him to Lindenwood University-Belleville for two years and eventually transferring to Logan Chiropractic, where he fell in love with assessing how people move. Justin’s love of teaching movement and of sports fostered the idea of opening up a Chiropractic & Sports Performance Clinic in his hometown of Ste. Genevieve. Justin shared, “Nothing excites me more than to come back to this great community and to be able to help whoever may need it.” ‘Resilient Clinic’ offers chiropractic manipulation/adjustments, soft tissue manipulation, rehabilitation, fascial cupping, dry needling, class IV laser therapy, and online personal

training for sport performance or just general health and wellness. Their primary focus is on musculoskeletal injuries, but they will offer a variety of treatments. “Healthcare is ever evolving for the better, and I plan to integrate new techniques into our modern chiropractic clinic,” stated Justin. Justin is the son of Curt ’88 and Gina ’89 Roth and has always credited his family as being the foundation for all of his endeavors, “My family has been my backbone throughout this entire process, and even now, I still lean on them heavily. There are a lot of demands, both emotionally and financially, with schooling and starting a business, and they have been with me and constantly positive throughout this entire ride. Justin also spoke very highly of his time at Valle Catholic, “The encouragement of my teachers and coaches at Valle setting us up with the skills and confidence to be a leader was very important in my

7

the skills and confidence to be a leader was very important in my growth.” Justin hopes to parlay his love of sports and his love of movement into a successful business, “All of my life experiences have led me to becoming an active, healthy person and now I want to help people achieve both their health and sports performance goals.” Justin is a Doctor of Chiropractic, and certified strength coach.

‘Resilient Clinic’ is located at 21450 Highway 32, Suite A, in Ste. Genevieve.

With more and more worthy causes vying for your charitable contribution, we at Valle Catholic are extremely grateful for those who support our mission. In order to continue towards our goal of more effective and efficient fundraising to “fund the gap” between tuition revenue and the cost to educate, the Fund for Valle Catholic was launched this year with great success. The most effective form of fundraising for our mission is a gift to the Fund for Valle Catholic.

In this first year of the Fund, we raised over $190,000, certainly one of the largest first-year amounts of any new annual fund! To many watching our progress from schools around the country, this is an impressive first year and perhaps surprising to them; not surprising to those who know the generous spirit of all the friends of Valle Catholic! What IS surprising is the fact that, out of respect for the uncertain conditions in the world during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fund’s solicitations were halted in early March, yet raised such an impressive amount in a few short months. This cornerstone of our fundraising activities is an annual giving campaign that engages alumni, parents, parents of alumni, friends and the business community in helping “fund the gap” and keeping tuition affordable for families, while providing the best educational experience for our students. Thank you to all the donors who have made a contribution to the Fund for Valle Catholic this year! We look forward to the bright and exciting future that lies in store for our school community as we work together to drive towards greater success for the entire Valle Catholic family.

Sexauers Bring Ingenuity and Togetherness to Fort Worth Clay Sexauer, ‘00, and his wife, Lina, are the owners of the Bubble Bus Co., based in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The Bubble Bus is a 1978 Volkswagen Type 2 bus transformed into a fully mobile bar, Instagrammable photo experience and mode of transportation. It is fitted with three taps, and they can serve anything such as champagne, beer, cocktails, wine, coffee, and soda. The Bubble Bus can be a part of any event … weddings, birthday parties, office happy hours, business launches, or even a backyard BBQ. Clay moved to Fort Worth, Texas in the Summer of 2000 to complete a Business Management degree at the University of Texas-Arlington. He has a wide array of experience in the restaurant, catering and concessions world. Additionally, he has in-depth expertise in community health and well-being projects. While taking a trip to the Rocky Mountains, Clay and Lina’s idea came together. There were two places in Colorado that sparked their ingenuity, Art Cartopia Museum in Trinidad and a Volkswagen bus car show in Colorado Springs. On their 11 hour drive back to Fort Worth, they came up with the Bubble Bus Co. They started their search for a bus and came across a 1978 Volkswagen Type 2 bus in Arlington, Texas. For the most part, the bus was in great

condition but needed a little TLC. Finally, in November 2019, the Bubble Bus Co. was completed, and the tires hit the pavement. In addition to the endless drink options, the bus serves as a memorable photo prop. The bus can also be used for transportation services, whether you want to arrive in style or getaway with a bang. It’s great to use for wedding, bachelorette or bachelor parties. Embracing Change, Serving Kindness Fast forward a few months and the Sexauers, like most of the world, were affected by the global pandemic. They used their creativity to take a new approach. “COVID changed everything for us,” Clay says. “We were sitting on the front porch thinking, like, what can we do?” Clay and Lina decided that they wanted to use Bubble Bus Co. to raise the spirits of their neighbors. “I thought, ‘I’m going to go buy three kegs of beer and give it away to my neighbors for free,’” Clay says. Clay and Lina loaded up their vintage bus with a few kegs of local brews and drove around their ‘hood, ice cream truck-style, handing out drinks and popsicles to folks stuck at home. Free beer from an Instagramworthy bus was, unsurprisingly,

9

a huge hit and drew lots of social media buzz. The Sexauers made enough money in tips to spur a payit-forward initiative, funding Bubble Bus Co. trips to other neighborhoods around town. “It sparked this whole chain of generosity,” Clay says. “People all chipping in to help each other out just to bring something into neighborhoods that brings people together.” Word caught on quickly about Bubble Bus Co.’s mobile quarantine happy hours. “When we pull into a neighborhood you see kids jumping because they know popsicles are coming but the adults have the same energy … because … beer,” Clay jokes. Lina said their new business model has taught her a couple things: that people are proud of their communities and that a little generosity goes a long way. “It’s connecting people through kindness,” she says. Clay and Lina plan to keep up mobile happy hours even after more quarantine restrictions are lifted. Lina says Bubble Bus Co. will continue their new-found mission: “Connecting communities one beer and popsicle at a time.” Contact: www.bubblebus.co 682-259-0056 Email: bubblebusco@gmail.com

State Champions 2019

“ Fratres Tui” – Strengthen your brother – was the theme for the 2019 Valle Warrior football season. This certainly proved to be an astute choice. The 2019 season was full of examples of young men strengthening one another by becoming more selfless throughout the season. The 2019 team certainly carried on a long tradition of football achievement at Valle Catholic. Many players had fathers, grandfathers, and even great grandfathers who wore the white helmet with the blue V many years before them. The 2019 team won Valle’s 15th state championship in school history. The 2019 playoff run included wins over the #4 ranked Hayti Indians 43-6, #3 ranked Thayer Bobcats 15-14, #2 ranked Mid-Buchanan Dragons 37-14, and the #1 ranked Lincoln Cardinals 30-27. The road certainly was not easy, but this only allowed for the joy to be that much sweeter. The Warriors were led by nine, amazing senior leaders: Chase Dunlap, Zach Wolk, Collin Grass, Kyle Roth, Peyton Tucker, Owen Viox, Cody Basler, Bryce Gegg, and Caleb Hoog. These individuals led the team with tremendous work ethic and humility. The 2019 season was a successful one as players grew closer to God and one another all while becoming more selfless and more self-confident. GO BIG BLUE!

valleschools.org CARL LOIDA ’16 GRADUATES FROM USAF ACADEMY COMMISSIONED AS SECOND LIEUTENANT The United States Air Force has always been in Carl Loida’s blood. Both his mother, Cindy, and father, Mike ’77, are retired Air Force Officers. In addition to Carl’s family background in the Air Force, Carl pointed towards his education at Valle Catholic as planting a seed in his Air Force Dream. “My experiences at Valle led me to pursue the Air Force and the Air Force Academy because of the many close relationships I built, and leadership opportunities I had while attending school. I knew I wanted to do something that would allow me to use the skills I developed at Valle to lead others, while still developing new relationships in a tight knit community. Attending Valle pushed me to always give 100% in what I’m doing and to strive to be the best. The culture of winning and academic achievement also influenced my decision to apply to the Air Force Academy. The process to be admitted to a service academy is very difficult and I knew the expectations and standards would be high, as they are at Valle”, said Loida. Carl’s time at the Air Force Academy was exemplary. Carl was named to the Dean’s List twice, Commandant’s List three times, and Athletics Director’s List four times. At the Air Force Academy, rather than just a GPA, there are three separate grading systems for academics, military, and athletics. If a cadet receives above a 3.00 and top third in their class in a certain category you are placed on the appropriate list. Carl was blessed to be named to this list. In addition to Carl’s degree in Geospatial Science, Carl received a separate accreditation certificate in Geospatial Intelligence for the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) for completing the required competencies. As part of the cadet curriculum, Carl received his jump wings, and soloed in a small aircraft among many other unique experiences. All the service academies are heavily geared towards an engineering curriculum. As part of the baseline academics, cadets take classes in aerodynamics, astrophysics, chemistry and mathematics. Carl was also a member of the AF Academy Crossfit Team. As part of the Air Force Special Warfare career field, Carl will join a community steeped in joint military leadership and trained to lead the full spectrum of Air Force Special Warfare conventional and special operations missions. Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) brings the Air Force firepower to the ground forces. Most often embedded with Army infantry, TACPs are the Joint Fires Experts (aircraft, artillery, mortars, naval gunfire). Often burdened with the responsibility of calling in precise “Danger Close” airstrikes, TACPs are highly trained individuals who provide the pivotal difference between success and defeat in battle. They find, fix, track, target, and engage enemy forces in close proximity to friendly forces. Carl began his first assignment at Chapman Annex, Joint Base San Antonio in Texas on June 20, 2020. From there, he will see where the Air Force takes him! The Valle Catholic Family thanks Carl for his continued service!

Kyle Roth ‘20 Named “Most Inspirational/ Courageous” Kyle Roth ‘20, son of Paul and Annette Roth, is the recipient of the St. Louis Tom Lombardo Chapter 2020 High School Scholar Athlete “Most Inspirational/ Courageous” Award. Head Coach, Judd Naeger, said, “In four years of football, Kyle never took a second off from practice. His dedication and commitment were an amazing example to the younger players on what it takes to succeed. He finished the year winning All-State Honors and Class 1 Defensive Player of the Year. What makes all of this even more remarkable is he did this all while being a Type 1 diabetic. At no time did Kyle allow his illness to be an obstacle. To the contrary, Kyle used his illness as a force multiplier to help others with the same problem. Kyle has been a mentor to youngsters in our community that share Kyle’s diabetes. He has shown them that you can overcome and excel if you believe in God, yourself, and those around you.” The St. Louis/Tom Lombardo Chapter has quickly become a driving force throughout the St. Louis football community. Founded in 1992, the chapter impacts thousands of high school, middle school and grade school students with a myriad of programs that successfully carry out the mission of the National Football Foundation.

Susan Roth offers her service at Maggie’s Place Susan Roth ‘15 graduated from Benedictine College in May 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, double majoring in Psychology and Theology. Since July 2019, she has been in Phoenix, Arizona doing a year of service. Susan serves as an Americorps member with Maggie’s Place, a non-profit organization that serves pregnant and parenting mothers who are experiencing homelessness. She is the House Manager of the Hannah House, one of four houses of hospitality in the Phoenix Valley, where she lives in community with seven mothers, their babies, and two other live-in staff. Roth said, “Community living has allowed me to live with strangers who have completely different life experiences than me, and build relationships of support so they have the strength to get off their feet after a crisis pregnancy. In the past ten months that I have lived here, I have seen mothers move into the house and do complete turn-arounds in their lifestyle in order to provide for their children. I have many stories about my time here at Maggie’s Place and the impact that it’s had on me personally. I have grown tremendously since choosing a year of service after graduating from college, and I’d love to share my story with Valle Catholic students/alumni in case anyone is considering doing the same. I’m very thankful for the Catholic education that Valle provided for me.” If you’d like more information on Maggie’s Place or Susan’s contact information, please email alumni@valleschools.org.

Community Events Keep Growing! For the second year, Valle Catholic Schools’ Advancement Team has hosted several Community Events on the Valle Catholic campus. The events target a variety of ages, allowing children to attend with family members and familiarize themselves with the Early Childhood program and Valle Catholic. Everyone is invited to attend, whether you are a student at Valle Catholic or not. Events have included Grandparent Bingo, Dino Night, Princess Tea and the Transportation Fair. Admissions Director, Jill Metzger, says, “Our Community Events give

families an opportunity to visit our campus, see our wonderful facilities and meet some of our exceptional staff. The events always consist of developmentally appropriate activities that encourage creativity and curiosity, and are just a whole lot of fun. These events also give our current middle and high school students the chance to step into leadership roles as they help with the execution of events. These Community Events are so rewarding for me personally, when I see the smiles on the young children’s faces as they enjoy their time at Valle. Be on the lookout for more Community Events for the 2020-2021 school year. We’d love to have your family join us!”

The Valle Catholic Schools Foundation asks you to discover the benefits of

Planned Giving

Planned giving is a way to integrate your financial planning goals. The right planned gift may provide you with tax and income benefits while helping the Valle Catholic Schools Foundation to provide our children with the best resources and ensure quality Catholic education for generations to come.

The most common planned gifts to make:

BEQUEST

Your will can include a gift of a specific asset, a dollar amount or a percentage of your estate to charity.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES AND CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTS

These plans can provide you with income over your lifetime and a charitable income tax deduction, while leaving a nice gift to charity. If you own appreciated assets such as stock or real estate, we can help you sell those assets tax free.

LIFE ESTATE

You can make a tax deduction gift of your home and remain living in it for your lifetime. There are additional real estate sale strategies that can provide you with cash, a charitable deduction and even income.
