Recently, violence and tragedy has affected our nation and the lives of our school children. As we read the stories of those who perpetrated these violent crimes, we cannot help but wonder how their lives got to the point that they felt so alone and unloved as to act out in this way. Seeing these events unfold gave me a renewed sense of purpose as to our mission in Catholic education. Catholic education is not merely a collection of courses in a curriculum, but rather, a holistic approach to forming the human person intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. At Valle Catholic, a student is not a number on a roster, but a unique individual, created in God’s image and likeness. These students are entrusted to us to help form into a virtuous, service-oriented, disciple of Christ who is well rounded in their human development.

Our school theme this year, “You Matter” is not just a cute marketing slogan. It is a deep expression of the message we are trying to convey to the boys, girls, young men, and young women who attend here every day … that each of them matter to us. In the ups and downs of lifes journey, in the complications of family dynamics, in the struggles with anxiety, a student will know that they matter to God and that they matter to everyone in the Valle Catholic family. If a student graduates knowing those two realities, then we have accomplished our goal as a Catholic Asschool.you enjoy these following pages of this magazine, I hope you will experience the joy and excitement that this year brought to all of us. I am grateful to the overwhelming support of our alumni and friends who have supported out mission financially this year. Conscious of the financial challenges we are all facing in this recent economy, we value your support and your commitment greatly! Thank you for being a part of our family and I hope you are as inspired by the stories within this magazine as I am! Committed to excellence, Fr. Edward Nemeth Schools

A lot of meaning can be wrapped up in two short words. How we interpret them can tell us quite a bit about ourselves or the ideologies that’ve left their mark on us. A person immersed in a secular worldview may hear those two words and hear echoes of “The customer is always right,” or “If I matter, then I get my Thisway.”is,of course, not the sense in which a Catholic school interprets those words. To Jesus, “You Matter” meant He loved Lazarus enough to weep upon hearing of his death. It meant healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and calling the sinner to repentance. It meant commanding His chosen Apostles to get down on their knees and do the dirty work normally consigned to slaves, and wash each other’s feet. I read an article not too long ago that claimed one-third of all working-age men in America were not employed. While it would be comforting to chalk that up to a temporary aberration caused by Covid, male labor-participation has been moving alarmingly downward for decades. “You Matter” also means our choices for ill have lasting consequences. It means that when people shirk responsibility, it affects the rest of the community. We saw a bit of this recently, when a new delivery driver couldn’t/wouldn’t drop off our food delivery in the Cafeteria, but unloaded 3 pallets in the lobby in the middle of the school day. For Christ, the negative truth of “You Matter” – our sinful choice – led to bearing wounds we deserved in His hands and feet. Wounds that still showed after the Resurrection. The goodness of God overcomes ill, but it doesn’t erase it. And that is how “You Matter” manifested at Valle during that botched food delivery. What would have taken our Maintenance Director a good chunk of his day unpacking the food, carrying boxes downstairs and into storage one-ata-time, was made short work of by helpful students in a Study Hall. When I think of “You Matter” at Valle, I think of two students who helped unload 900 lbs of handicap equipment for a house across the street during a Tailgate Assembly. I think of retired Valle faculty Theresa Kirchmer and Linda Kertz showing up so often they may almost be full-time, to fill the gap for positions we can’t fill and sub shortages that have districts all over the state still desperately posting “Want Ads”. I think of the alumni and dads that got old desks moved, and stored Café tables until the floor could be finished, after new tables arrived late. One of the uncomfortable realities of Jesus’ ministry is that He didn’t change everyone’s mind, and He let people walk away. “You Matter” at Valle means each of us is expected to work on improving our faults and calling each other to amend them. It means we don’t surrender and just say, “This is how I am,” or “This is how things have always been done.”

As we approach the end of the summer, we continue to face delays in delivery of instructional equipment, increase in prices, and other issues. But we adapt, we change, we grow with God’s grace, and we thrive, because “You Matter.”

Greg Miller, High School Principal

All students went one-to-one with Chromebooks, middle school received new tables and chairs, and all classrooms were equipped with new Promethean boards. Teachers spent time learning several new platforms and equipment to be able to best help our students in these quickly changing times.

Faculty members are continuing their education and attending workshops over the summer in preparation for August.

Amanda Overmann Grade School Principal

This school year came and went in a blur. We began way back in the fall with fresh paint, new floors, and a lot of happy faces. As the school year moved along, we changed COVID guidelines, reinstated some fun activities, and continued to improve our campus.

We will continue to improve our classrooms as well. We still have a few classrooms in the elementary that need updated floors. Those floors are being updated this summer. We also have several classrooms that will be getting fresh paint as well. As we prepare for a new school year, we look back with gratitude for our teachers, parents, staff, and all those who support the mission at Valle Catholic Schools. We will continue to promote a culture where each and every student knows the meaning of “you matter” … to faculty, to staff and to one another.

Q. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received from a student? A. The best advice I’ve received from a student is that having potential means nothing unless you actually use it. It’s not enough to be capable of something if it is not put to good use. Samantha Gegg

Q. What is your favorite book? A. My favorite book series is definitely Harry Potter. My favorite stand alone book is To Kill a Mockingbird.

Focus on Faculty:

Q. What is your favorite part of your job and why? A. My favorite part of my job is building relationships with my students. I love sharing my favorite books and stories with my students and seeing their reactions. But most of all, I love the memories we create in the classroom with each other. Over the years, as my students have graduated and grown up, I’ve become friends with many of them.

Q. What is one of your hidden A.talents? One of my hidden talents is that I can still do a lot of dance skills and tricks even though I’m old now

Q. What does being a Warrior mean to you? A. To me, being a Warrior means being someone who spreads the mission of Christ in both words and actions. It’s important to me that I treat others with kindness and compassion because that’s what Christ wants.

S amanatha Gegg is a member of the Valle Catholic High School faculty. She teaches English and is the head coach of the Valle Catholic Dance Line. Sam shared, “I’m originally from Florissant in North St. Louis county where I attended Incarnate Word Academy for high school and graduated in 2010. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with Secondary Education Certification from Lindenwood University where I graduated in 2014. In 2015, I began teaching at Farmington High School where I taught freshmen ELA and senior ELA and coached the middle school Jr. Knightline dance team for two years and the high school JV Knightline dance team for one year. In 2019, l came to Valle where I currently teach English I, II, and III, moderate the sophomore class, and coach the competitive Valle Dance Line. I took Dance Line to their first competition last school year at the Farmington Dance Invitational where they placed 2nd in hip hop, 3rd in jazz, and 4th overall in class 1. The team will attend more competitions this upcoming school year. Something people might not know about me is that I have 24 years of dance experience. I grew up dancing in various dance studios, was a member of the nationally ranked Lindenwood Lionettes Dance Team as well as the university dance department in college, and began coaching at the high school level my junior year of college. I currently teach competitive and recreational classes at Dance Express and Tumbling in Ste. Genevieve. When I’m not working, my husband, Jake, and I are super busy being parents to two amazing and energetic boys, Carter (5) and Tristan (3). Jake and I just celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary.

CHRIS ROBERTS (Lead Guitar, Keyboards and a little bit of Vocals) Chris was recently named the President of Auburn University.. He and his wife, Tracy, have been married for 24 years and have two children who also live in Auburn, AL.

In 1985, Marty McFly took a trip back in time in his DeLorean in the blockbuster “Back to the Future.” Let’s head back to 1985 … a time when minimum wage was $3.35, bacon was $1.89/pound, Tears for Fears dominated the music charts and the Kansas City Royals were the World ValleChampions.Catholic

When asked about his most influential teacher, Chris said, “I am not able to name just one. On my list would be: Frank Weteroth, Sister Walter Marie, Father John Bolderson, Sara Menard, Clarence Hill, Gary Roberts, Joel Sumner, and several Heothers.”shared, “Frankly, being a member of The Allies was one of the most formative, and definitely one of the most fun and rewarding, experiences of my life. I learned so much from each of those guys! We were five very good friends who together developed a shared love of performing music while also learning life lessons. We learned about the payoff of hard work, teamwork, determination, and comradery. I sometimes dream about going back in time to a practice session with those guys in Herbie’s (Mike’s) garage (not sure how his parents tolerated the noise), or sitting in the back of a Valle classroom writing out song setlists with Paul and Eddie V while Ronnie sketched our band logo in a notebook (I’ll bet Ronnie can still draw the

A Trip back in time with the members of “The Allies”

Maybe you remember these guys, and maybe you don’t. Regardless, the members of “The Allies” have taken very different journeys. Where are they now?

High School had a graduating class of 69 students. Fr. Gregory Schmidt was the pastor and administrator, and Fr. John Boric was the high school principal. The student council president was Ron Tucker. Vice-President was Chris Roberts, and other members included Mike Fallert, Paul Loida and Ed Visnovske. High School students by day … members of the band “The Allies” by night. On a side note, “The Allies” are not to be confused with the other dominating 80s band in Ste. Genevieve County during that time. “Stingray” was also popular, represented by Dan Kohm ’85. Maybe you remember Ron’s 1980 black Ford Pinto, or maybe you remember Ed’s ’72 Buick Skylark. Ed spent a good six months crawling in and out of the windows, as the doors wouldn’t open from hitting too many deer. Nancy Fischer was in her second year of teaching at Valle Catholic.

Mike said, “I didn’t recognize it at the time, but attending Valle instilled values in me that influenced not only my career, but me as a person and father. Discipline, ethics, respect, and faith, helped guide me as I progressed through life. I now see these same traits in my adult kids and I can’t help but believe that Valle Catholic and its caring teaching staff played a major part in the successes and blessings in my family’s lives.”

L TO R: TUCKER, ROBERTS, VISNOVSKE, FALLERT, LOIDA 15 logo). Man that was fun. While we have not performed together in years (I’m certainly a bit rusty), I regularly reflect on how important my experience with the The Allies was in my own development. Interestingly, each member of the band has gone on to achieve and contribute much in our lives, and I think The Allies had a great deal to do with this. Being a member of The Allies was an amazingly formative experience, and we shared it with all of our friends as we played different venues around Ste. Gen. My Allies memories mean the world to me.”

SONGS PLAYED ON THE WAY TO SCHOOL

Mike married Kelly Miles, his high school girlfriend. She worked the lights for the band. They have two daughters, Ashley (29) and Paige (25).

MIKE FALLERT (Drums/Percussion/Backup Vocals) Mike entered the U.S. Air Force in 1989 as a commissioned officer and earned his Navigator wings in 1990. He spent the majority of his 20 year career as an Electronic Warfare Officer flying on the MC-130H. He retired from the Air Force in 2009 as a Lieutenant Colonel and moved back to Ste. Genevieve and took a position as the City Administrator, before going to work for Sabreliner Corporation, He is currently a Financial Advisor, First Command Financial Services.

PAUL LOIDA (Rhythm Guitar, Keyboards, a little bit of PaulVocals)Loida lives in St. Louis with his wife, Anne, a middle school teacher and religious education coordinator at St. Peter School. They have three sons, Aaron, Julian and Harry, and a dog, Pepper Ann. He has an A.B. in Chemistry from St Louis University and Ph.D. Biochemistry from University of Illinois. He is currently the Global Regulatory Affairs Manager, Biologicals for Bayer. Paul said his most influential teacher was, “Mrs Roth … my sixth science grade teacher. She was the person who first sparked my interest in science.” His biggest regret was, “Not learning more about the importance of diversity of people and cultures.”

ED VISNOVSKE (Lead Vocals/Sound Engineering) After Valle Catholic, Ed graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in Music Engineering. Ed was recruited by Sony Classical. He immediately landed a job recording the New York Metropolitan Opera. He traveled the world, making music with amazing musicians. Eventually he left the city scene and moved to the mountains of upstate New York. Climbing (all kinds, rock, ice, mountaineering, skiing) became a driving force in his life and it lined up with ranger work, so he took a job in Yosemite with the National Park Service. He now works in Glacier National Park, as Deputy Chief Ranger here and supervises all of the Emergency Services for the park, including Search and Rescue, Emergency Medical Services, Law Enforcement, and Structure Fire. He is married to Bobbie, and they have a daughter, Abby. They have three mustangs, which keep them busy with trail riding, barrel racing, 15 and horse shows. Ed’s biggest influence at Valle Catholic was Mark Benson. He said, “I wasn’t a particularly good football player, and I basically have no clue about organized sports teams now. So it wasn’t about the game itself, but the football program there had a vision, and everyone was involved, even a non-conformist like me. The whole school was united behind that vision and Benson was able to take the vision and execute it into a plan. I have to do exactly that everyday in my work and I think I learned in some ways what that looks like through my experiences with that program and Benson’s drive.”

Warriors on the Move Mike Roth ‘85 recently was named the Missouri Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (MIAAA) Athletic Director of the year. He was recognized for the award at the MIAAA’s conference at Lake of the Ozarks earlier this year. Roth has served Parkway for over 30 years and has been Parkway’s director of activities and athletics since 2014. Before that, he was Parkway Central’s athletic director for five years. “It certainly was a nice honor for the many years of work and service at Parkway,” Roth said. “I’ve had great people surrounding me through the years. I’ve worked with four great athletic director’s at the Parkway “Itschools.”certainly was a great honor to receive. I’m blessed. I share the award with everybody at Parkway. Typically, the older guys get a little recognition so I guess that’s what happened. Certainly it was a surprise. I was thrilled. My wife (Trisha Basler Roth ‘85) and five daughters were thrilled. They were all with me at the ceremony. It was great to see all the athletic director’s from all around the state. It’s a valuable learning experience where we all talk.” In 2022, Roth will turn the page when he takes over as athletic director at Whitfield High School. “I’m so excited to join the Whitfield community,” Roth said. “They’re very supportive. I can’t wait to get together with everyone there.” from Warren Hayes, West News Magazine

Those who followed their journey on social media would always remark on how in the world they could find 70 different matching outfits! The twins gave credit to their daughters, nieces, and sisters for lending them clothes along the way so they could dress alike for 70 different Eachchurches!visit included a blessing from the celebrant, a photo by the cornerstone, and a picture of family and friends in attendance for that particular Mass. They participated in Masses in several different languages including Spanish, Latin, Vietnamese, Polish, and Hungarian. Their experience offered many special moments. You can read more about their #journeyto70

This group of retired faculty and alumni enjoys a summer weekend at Lake of the Ozarks.

To mark their 70th birthday year, retired Valle Catholic teacher, Mrs. Theresa Kirchmer and her twin sister, Mary Anne Miller came up with the idea of attending Mass in 70 different churches in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, at least one in each of the ten deaneries. Their journey began on their 69th birthday, March 6, 2020 at St. Francis Xavier (College) Church and due to covid closures took two years instead of one concluding on March 6, 2022 at Our Lady of the Holy Cross in Baden (North St. Louis).

For transportation within Peru, we had a Huskey bus style vehicle for the week to take us to and from the school, then we used taxis and Ubers when navigating elsewhere.

This trip to Peru was organized by FOCUS missions, which is Fellowship of Catholic University Students. SEMO has a Newman Center, and within the Newman Center we currently have 4 FOCUS missionaries who work with us. Focus offered this Spring Break mission trip, and two of our FOCUS missionaries lead the trip and informed us on the opportunity! For this mission trip we did service work in Arequipa, Peru! The whole trip was 10 days long. We arrived in Houston, TX on March 11th, then flew from Houston to Lima, Peru on March 12th. We ended up staying in Lima until March 14th because of the Covid tests needed to fly further, then March 14th we flew from Lima to Arequipa! We arrived back into the states on March 20th. I love mission. Through Vincentian Marion Youth, the youth group at Valle, who also cover Sainte Genevieve and Perryville, I had previously attended 4 mission trips with and loved. And I want to see the world, so this mission trip to a new country was perfect! Helping the less fortunate and the poor in spirit gives me great joy! And it is so easy to see the face of God in the poor. While in Houston and Lima, we stayed in hotels, then in Arequipa, we stayed at a Catholic retreat center. At the retreat center there was a kitchen & cooks, who fed us dinner almost every night, 2 women who were are guides, Anacarla and Alejandra, who showed us around Arequipa showed us to the school we were to work at, and they also translated Spanish for us, and Victor, our host, who worked very closely with the retreat center. Also, a nun, Sister Emily, accompanied us throughout Peru!

The food in Peru was wonderful; lots of soup, chicken, and rice, and each morning for breakfast we were served two pieces of bread, with butter and a jam we called “brown.” Papaya juice, mango juice, and hot tea were offered at each meal, and normally the juices were room temperature. I really enjoyed all the food they offered, however since it was different many people experienced stomach issues. Also, we were not allowed to drink water there, we were given box water (looks like box wine) and were allowed to fill our water bottles with it. On our extra days in Lima, we visited downtown, danced with the locals in a celebration they were having, we

attended mass at the Basilica of Santo Domingo Lima, where the remains of St. Rose of Lima, St. Martin de Porres, and St. John Macias rest. St. Rose of Lima as well as St. Martin de Porres skulls were actually on display within the basilica. After mass we ate at a restaurant called “pollo,” which translates to chicken! Spent many hours in the airports, because of so much security and international travel requirements.

Also, every morning we would go to 8:00am mass and pray holy hour to start our days. We would then normally go to breakfast, then from breakfast get on the bus to go to the school, have a bag lunch at the school, and work at the school until 4:45 each day, play soccer with people at the school from 4:45-5, get back on the bus to go back to the retreat center, shower, eat dinner, have talks and share testimonies, do high, low, God moments, and then we were free for the evening. On travel days also we always found a time and place to attend mass and pray a holy hour, as well as do high, low, and God moments.

I loved every memory made here, but the ones that stuck out the most were dancing with the locals in Lima, praying a holy hour each day in our retreat center chapel, getting to experience the Peruvian people, especially the kids, having a celebration at Victor’s house (our host) where we had mass, ate, and danced more, and just really getting to know the people I went into the trip with as well as forming relationships with the locals! One thing that will always stick with me is how good the kiddos in Peru gave hugs!! Everyone was so welcoming and friendly, especially the kids!

The work we did was at the San Juan Apostol Catholic school, and the week we attended was actually the first week they had been back in classes after covid. Our first day there, we divided into groups and we had a local lead us to houses of parish and school members and we visited with them, prayed with them and blessed their homes. The rest of the week, each morning we would do Catechesis within the schools with the children, by performing skits, then doing art activities of bible stories. Then after lunch the women worked on sanding and repainting a playground for the children, while the boys poured concrete steps under an outdoor pavilion.

First day in Arequipa was a tourist day, and we visited Santa Catalina Monastery, got to see the Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa, (got to have mass here the day before we left Peru), explored downtown Arequipa at nighttime!

Some challenges we did face throughout this trip was the unexpected extended stay in Lima due to needing PCR Covid tests. But this turned out to be a blessing because we got to explore downtown, dance with locals, and visit the basilica. The other great challenge we had was the language barrier, they mostly spoke Spanish, and only one member of our trip was fluent. This made is hard to communicate with the locals and children, however by the end of the trip all of us had learned some Spanish and were able to communicate some!

I hope you can get a feel for my what my Peru experiences were like with all this info!! It was one of the best experiences I have had in my life thus far! Also, to further deepen my faith, and become a better leader in the faith I will be going to Newry, Maine with the same group, FOCUS, to what they call Summer Projects!

Thank you to our student art ambassadors for their hard work: Kristen Drury, Mackenzie Buchheit, Ella Bley, Lauren Schilly, Cutter Abt, Alyssa Gibson, Karah Gibson, Rhea Meyer, Charlie Naeger and Gage Fallert. Valle Catholic Schools launched our new program, “Warriors at Work” in the Fall of 2021. “Warriors at Work”, is designed to expose Valle Catholic High School students to various career opportunities. Career exploration is key to helping students discover potential professions. Allowing students to figure out what they like and don’t like can help narrow their career path before college.

The 2021 Valle Schools Benefit Golf Tournament was once again a great success thanks to the hard work of Rick Sexauer ‘73 and his crew. The tournament raised almost $19,000 in 2021, the most ever. It’s great to see so many families come together to enjoy the day! The Weiler family has participated for years.

Roth and Vernon Huck were true Warriors. Gump was a giant in the world of Valle football. He helped coach for many years and later would become a treasured fan and supporter of all things Valle. Vernon was a star quarterback for the Warriors in the early 60s and would later coach the Warriors and become a giant in the education community in Southeast Missouri. Together, they helped to save Valle football leading into the 1960 season. The program had fallen on dire straits. Equipment and enthusiasm were at an all time low. New Coach Ralph Thomure struggled to find enough equipment to have a team. With the help of Gump Roth, they found enough to play the season. Quarterback Vernon Huck helped to lead the team a 5-5 record and the Thomure era would be off and running.

L TO R: DON KARL, ED “DUKE”, PETE PAPIN, TOM WALLER ‘66, FRANK VAETH

Valle Values / Summer 2022 26

Pete Papin was also a tremendous supporter of Valle Football over the years. He was a big time fan and booster over the years. He would often help paint the field, help out with fundraising events, and most recently, organized many breakfasts with the help of the American Legion Hall for the Warriors in the playoffs and state bound teams. You could always count on Pete to talk Valle Football and share his love of the team. As the story goes, Pete and friends once helped finance the Valle Booster Club by selling “refreshments” for a quarter before games at the Valle Springs Park – the park that would later become known as “Wally’s World” for all the work Gump Roth put into Wallyit.“Gump”

This past year has seen the passing of some giants in the Valle Catholic Football Family. Don Karl ‘47, Pete Papin ‘55, Coach Wally “Gump” Roth ‘51, and Coach Vernon Huck ‘62 all left their mark on Valle Football, and they all certainly played a large part in decades of success on the grid-iron.

All these men will certainly be missed, but their impact on Valle football will live on forever.

Don “DK” Karl was very generous with his time, talent, and treasure to Valle Football and Valle Catholic Schools over the years. He loved his time playing for the Warriors in the mid 40s and supported the team in many ways over the last seven decades. He and his wife, Ellen, often stopped to watch practice, to get a scouting report, or to offer a little knowledgeable advice, and wish the team luck, on and off the field. We are sure he will find a parking spot in the front row of Heaven to keep rooting on the Warriors.
