Risa Mara Machuca is an energetic and dynamic woman who leads and participates in numerous creative projects and has found that Sayulita is the ideal home base to bring them to fruition. She has lived in Riviera Nayarit for 13 years and her passion for surfing is evident in her lifestyle and the contagious smile she wears as she discusses the sport.

Although she was born in San Blas, Nayarit, and grew up in New York, Machuca came to our destination from California, where she studied Liberal Arts and worked at a production company that made music videos.

“I originally came back here to take care of my father, who was in very delicate health. After his death, a friend invited me to Sayulita to work as a surf teacher as I had already been practicing the sport for several years. After the first class and experiencing the magic of this town, it was impossible for me to return to the United States,” she explains.

Machuca soon became involved in the organization of the Festival Sayulita, a cultural event that takes place every year, showcasing film, music, and gastronomy. “I wrote and directed a short film that was shot in San Blas. My plan is to rework it to extend it into a longer film. I’m also in talks to make other audiovisual materials related to surfing.”

Risa Mara Machuca es una mujer muy activa que ha encontrado en Sayulita el sitio ideal para darle vida a cada uno de los proyectos que lidera y en que participa. Radicada en esta parte de la Riviera Nayarit desde hace 13 años, su pasión por el surf queda de manifiesto en el estilo de vida que disfruta y contagia con su sonrisa.

Aunque es originaria de San Blas, Nayarit y creció en Nueva York, Machuca llegó a nuestro destino proveniente de California, donde estudió Artes Liberales y trabajaba en una productora que realizaba videos musicales.

“Yo llegué aquí para cuidar a mi papá, quien se encontraba muy delicado de salud. Luego de su fallecimiento, una amiga me invitó a Sayulita para trabajar como maestra de surf, pues ya tenía varios años practicando este deporte. Después de la primera clase y de experimentar la magia de este pueblo, para mí fue imposible regresar a Estados Unidos”, explica.

Pronto, Machuca se involucró en la organización del Festival Sayulita, un evento cultural de cine, música y gastronomía que se realiza de manera anual. “Además, tengo un cortometraje que filmé en San Blas, el cual escribí y dirigí. Mi plan a corto plazo es trabajarlo de nuevo para extenderlo y convertirlo en película. Asimismo, estoy en pláticas para realizar otros materiales audiovisuales relacionados con el surf”.

“Since my arrival in Sayulita, things began to flow in a very genuine and natural way. Doors opened little by little, so I could start doing my thing. I am very proud to see how happy people are when they take a surf class with me or when there is a positive change after taking a retreat.” “Desde mi llegada a Sayulita, las cosas comenzaron a fluir de manera muy genuina y natural. Las puertas se me abrieron poco a poco para empezar a hacer lo mío y me causa mucho orgullo ver a la gente feliz cuando toma una clase de surf conmigo o existe un cambio positivo después de estar en un retiro”.

In fact, the sport has provided many connections and opportunities for Machuca. “It’s been 10 years since I founded Surf It Out, a private service that offers personalized classes helping people learn how to surf. As time went on, my preparation, ability, and effort paid off and I was invited to represent Mexico in the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru in 2019, when surfing was finally recognized as an Olympic sport.”

Machuca currently leads two annual retreats revolving around surfing: Surf Your Soul Retreat, which is exclusively aimed at women who wish to share experiences and realign in body and soul, and Dads and Daughters Surf Retreat, which seeks to build a unique bond between fathers and daughters, while they strengthen their connection through adventures at sea.

De hecho, este deporte le ha dado muchas conexiones y oportunidades a Machuca: “Hace 10 años fundé Surf It Out, un servicio privado que ofrece clases personalizadas para aprender a surfear. Con el paso del tiempo, mi preparación, talento y esfuerzo rindieron frutos, así que fui invitada para representar a México en Los Juegos Panamericanos Lima 2019, cuando el surf fue reconocido como disciplina olímpica por primera vez”.

Actualmente, Machuca encabeza dos retiros anuales que giran en torno al surf: Surf Your Soul Retreat, el cual está dirigido exclusivamente a mujeres que desean compartir vivencias y realinearse en cuerpo y alma; así como el Dads and Daughters Surf Retreat, que tiene como objetivo brindar una convivencia única entre padres e hijas, al tiempo que fortalecen sus lazos a través de aventuras en el mar.

En 2022, fue publicado el libro Women Making Waves, donde el trabajo y personalidad de Machuca fueron incluidos: “En las páginas de esa publicación personality of Machuca: “In the pages of that book are many of my idols. The author, Lara Einzig, included female surfers from all over the world, who inspire and empower.” están muchas de mis ídolos. La autora, Lara Einzig, incluyó a mujeres surfistas de todo el mundo, quienes, desde su punto de vista, inspiramos, empoderamos y ayudamos a conectar con los demás”.

To end our conversation, Machuca shared her experience living in this colorful little surf town: “I am living in Sayulita because there is a lot of creative people here. It has a unique vibe unmatched by anywhere I’ve been. Besides, being able to create and make things by myself is something I really appreciate. The magic of this place is indescribable and has given me a lot to be thankful for. Because of this, I make sure to get involved with the community when it is necessary to raise funds for a charity or to support a cause. Headlining the annual surf camp for children in the town is something that fills me with great pride, because I love to see the excited faces when they get up on the surfboard for the first time”.

Para finalizar nuestra conversación, Machuca compartió su experiencia de vida al radicar en este microdestino de Riviera Nayarit: “Estoy viviendo en Sayulita porque hay mucha gente creativa aquí. Es una vibra única que se comparte de manera inexplicable. Además, el poder crear y hacer cosas por mí misma es algo que aprecio mucho. De verdad que la magia de este lugar es indescriptible y me ha dado mucho. Como agradecimiento por todo esto, me gusta involucrarme con la comunidad cuando hay que recaudar fondos para alguna beneficencia o apoyar alguna causa. Encabezar el campamento de surf anual para niños del pueblo es algo que me llena de orgullo, pues me encanta ver sus rostros felices cuando se levantan en la tabla por primera vez”.
