OurscholarshipprogrammecontinuestobeattheheartofUWCAtlantic’smission,breakingdown barriers,nurturingdiversityandenablinglife-changingopportunitiesforyoungpeoplefromall backgrounds.Throughcollectiveefforts,107scholarshipstudentsweresupportedtoaccessaUWC Atlanticeducation.Weareproudoftheprogressmadethispastyear,thankstothegenerosityofour community.

Thevoicesofourscholarsaretheclearestreminderof whyourmissionmatters,theirexperienceshighlight notonlythepersonalimpactofscholarships,butalso therippleeffectofgenerosityacrosscommunities worldwide.

GrowingupasanonlychildinHongKong,Joyce describesherselfasshelteredand“spoiled.”School cameeasily,butsheadmitssheoftenstumbled forwardwithoutmuchsenseofdirection-“abitlike ForrestGump”.Allthatchangedwhenshereceiveda fullscholarshiptoUWCAtlantic.

“Itwasaturningpoint,”Joycerecalls.“Iusedtothink IshouldonlydothingsIwasgoodat.UWCtaughtme totry,tofailandtokeepgoing.Itgavemecourageto stepoutsidemycomfortzoneandthatchanged everything.”

AtUWCAtlantic,theworldbecamereal.Forthefirst time,shesharedmeals,classesandfriendshipswith peerswhosefamilieshadlivedthroughapartheid, genocideandcivilwar.Theirstoriesmovedglobal issuesfromheadlinestoheart.“Ifyoudon’tsee,you don’tfeel.Andifyoudon’tfeel,youwon’tbemoved toact.”

ENGAGED COMMUNITY

Inspiredtoserve,Joycestudiedmedicine,believingit wasatoolthatcouldhelpanywhere.Thoughriskaversebynature,sheandherhusbandHenrimovedto Gabonafterherstudies,wheretheyestablishedand rantheeyesurgicalcentreofamissionhospital. Againstallodds,theygrewitintoaself-sufficient project-arareachievementincharitablehealthcare.
