A PROGRESSIVE SPACE FOR AN INNOVATIVE CURRICULUM

AN EDUCATIONAL
HUB TO TRANSFORM EDUCATION

AN EDUCATIONAL
HUB TO TRANSFORM EDUCATION
This year, UWC Atlantic will be pioneering a unique and bespoke IB curriculum pathway focussed on transformative change, systems leadership, and just futures. This new curriculum, called the Systems Transformation Pathway has been established in response to the need for an education system that meets the needs of the 21st century, an education framework that will best develop the responsible, principled citizens of tomorrow.
Consider the major global changes that have taken place in recent decades and how they have influenced present-day teaching. The challenges we face are becoming increasingly complex, and in response to unfolding global crises, our students are actively seeking an education that promotes a fair, equal, and sustainable world. So, UWC Atlantic is returning to its original roots and is once again pioneering advancements in the field of learning for the future.
The pathway will be piloted in September 2023, with a global cohort of 24 students from the colleges’ 2023 intake. Following that, a swift rollout of the pathway is expected, resulting in its widespread adoption throughout the UWC network and beyond by 2030. Once established, there is potential for its expansion to encompass 5,000 IB World schools annually at a global level.
To realise our ambitions, the new pathway will require a new home – a cutting edge, innovative and collaborative space for both teaching and learning. Funding will be required for its initiation, development and construction.
This space, called the Education Hub, will house the Systems Transformation Pathway supporting the delivery of teaching of UWC Atlantic students for the next 40 years - as such, impacting the learning of over 15,000 future UWC scholars.
The developed design of the Education Hub will result in teaching spaces appropriate for future teaching pedagogies and provide science laboratory spaces appropriate for 21st century teaching.
A spacious and versatile atrium will be built, connecting the current academic blocks and designed to encourage cross-curricular collaboration with all interior spaces reorganised and renovated.

A competitive tender process to recruit suitable architects was recently completed in July 2023 and the successful architects, Building Design Partnership (BDP), were appointed. BDP have been tasked with producing an outline design for the Education Hub by December 2023. The quantity surveyors, will then update their estimated budgetary costs so that the outline design and budget can be finalised. Once we have a clearer idea of the funds secured for the development, the project will be advanced to the planning application stage.
Estimated project costs have been received following work by the quantity surveyors RPA Group. A copy of the fee and build estimated costs can be provided and can be summarised as follows:
“Our reputation as educational pioneers who inspire changemakers precedes us. So it’s only natural that UWC should be proactively seeking to solve the issues that face us right now and in the future.”
– Faith Abiodun, UWC International Executive Director
If the project were to move immediately to planning stages, it is anticipated that the time required to reach the construction phase would be 15 months. This timescale may shift subject to the availability of funds secured.
The construction phase, dependent on the nature of the agreed design and subject to any phasing of the project introduced to mitigate the impact on students, would be between 18 months and 2 years.
At this time (July 2023), and likely subject to future change, the timescales are as follows:
To make our vision a reality, we are seeking finance for the construction of the Education Hub and are looking towards the support, knowledge, and guidance of our closest friends and allies to take this forward.
Since you know us well, you will understand how our innovative thinking can transform education in the future.
It would be a great privilege if you could join us to help shape this exciting journey as we rethink how we prepare our students to succeed in these unique and challenging times.
For any supporter committing significant financial help towards the construction of the Education Hub, UWC Atlantic would also be open to considering naming rights.
