WELCOME TO GALVESTON Galveston Island, less than an hour south of Houston, is more than just a resort town. The small city has a long history to match its rich beauty and charm—it’s been the home of buccaneers and tycoons, and was once called the “Wall Street of the South” because of the wealth and prosperity garnered as the nation’s second most prosperous port. Galveston’s historic elegance is often paralleled to that of Charleston, Savannah and New Orleans, with architectural examples from every era since the 1820s. A strong connection to nature also features prominently in Galveston, with the beach and bays, endless preserved marshlands, clear skies and open space. Galveston’s famous Seawall is lined with shops, restaurants and the Pleasure Pier, with game booths and rides. On the bay, the three pyramids of Moody Gardens punctuate the skyline. Here, guests can walk through a tropical rainforest, experience various IMAX films or explore a large aquarium. Downtown’s Strand and nearby streets are filled with shops, cafes and live music. In December, the island hosts Dickens on the Strand, a festival that revisits the charm of England’s 4

Victorian Era. Mardi Gras Galveston!, Texas’ largest Mardi Gras celebration, brings grand parades, great bands, food and fun for two weeks in February. Throughout the year, the Strand sees several other large events like the Yaga’s Wild Game BBQ Cookoff, the Lone Star Biker Rally, Oktoberfest and the periodic Art Walks. Downtown is also the epicenter for the arts in Galveston. The Grand 1894 Opera House hosts several performances throughout its season and, just blocks away the East End Theater Company runs a several-show season each year with outstanding local actors and producers. Throughout downtown, several art galleries display the talents of local artists. L I VIN G IN GALVESTO N ON-CAMPUS HOUSING Interested in Living On-Campus? UTMB Dorms The University of Texas Medical Branch encourages students in the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences to take advantage of all the benefits of living in the University’s on-campus dormitories. On-campus housing offers its residents low rent and facilities that are conveniently located within walking distance of all Medical Branch buildings. This can translate into savings of time and money over long commutes and parking fees. Current rates: Shared Suite Rooms are $663/month. Rooms w/Private Bathroom are $770/month. UTMB Ferry Road Apartments The Ferry Road Apartments, located at 710, 810 & 910 Ferry Road, are an apartment complex that allows students to live near campus at affordable prices. Students can choose between unfurnished efficiency apartments ($325/month), 2-bedroom apartments ($934/month), and 3-bedroom apartments ($1,115/month). All apartments include paid utilities with the exception of internet or cable. Ample parking provided on-site. All rooms are furnished with a full-size bed, desk, bookshelves, dresser, nightstand, and a shared or private bath. All of our rooms were recently renovated. A common kitchen & living area, WiFi and local TV are provided. This location offers an enclosed outside area with pool! All utilities are paid.

410 Market Street Private rooms for UTMB students located at 410 Market Street, just steps away from campus. These are private rooms with a shared bath, common kitchen & living area. Rooms are furnished with a full-size bed, desk, dresser and nightstand. Wi-Fi and local TV are provided. All utilities are paid. One parking space provided per tenant. 410 Market Street tenants have access to the pool at 401 Mechanic Street. 401 Mechanic Street The private rooms at the 401 Mechanic Street dorm are spacious and were recently newly renovated. All rooms are furnished with a full-size bed, desk, shelves, dresser, nightstand, and a shared bath. All utilities, Wi-Fi, and cable TV are included. Tenants at 401 Mechanic have immediate access to the pool at 401 Mechanic Street, which is shared with tenants from the 410 Market dorm. All current or incoming students can directly apply for housing by logging into Student Housing with their UTMB credentials via MyStar or from the UTMB Student Housing website (https://www.utmb.edu/auxiliaryenterprises/housing/dormprogram). This application is currently provided free to all UTMB students, accessible from all modern web browsers (Google Chrome, Mozilla FireFox, Edge, Internet Explorer 11+, Safari etc.) for online use with online interfaces of common Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook Mail. Students also have the option to download a local installation of Microsoft Office 365 (the latest version) to their device(s). The full suite is available for download/installation as well as standalone installations such Skype For Business Basic. Students can log in to their mailbox via the web at www. mymail.utmb.edu, then proceed to click on the Outlook Mail icon. Academic Computing Educational and research technology resources for UTMB faculty and students are provided by the Academic Computing department. Academic Computing maintains the school’s academic course management tools, lecture capture system, student online testing applications, among other resources. Learning Systems Blackboard Web-based access to courses from all four UTMB schools is provided by the Blackboard course management system. Blackboard courses can include many web-based course tools including announcements, blogs, contacts, calendars, discussion boards, glossaries, journals, messages, tasks, tests, assignments, audio messaging, and wikis, as well as course content files. ▶ ▶

UTMB’s MyVPN web page allows you to access campus applications and network services protected behind the UTMB firewall. Traveling faculty, staff, and students, as well as those located at home, can connect to the UTMB network using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). UTMB uses a thirdparty client called Pulse Secure to connect your device to the VPN, and adds an additional layer of security by requiring the use of Duo two-factor authentication.

Duo Security Referred to as two-step or two-factor authentication, this process, which uses Duo Security, asks individuals logging in to confirm their identity using a smartphone, via text, or via automated voice calls. To increase the security of information UTMB uses Duo, a two-factor authentication that can be downloaded as an app on your phone. This two-factor authentication is needed to check your e-mail on or off campus and to login to the VPN to access myStar when off campus. Instructions on how to install Duo can be found here.

R E MOT E LE ARNING The University has established protocols for academic continuity, which includes courses having a Blackboard section to facilitate communication between students and instructors. Students are asked to prepare for possible disruptions by getting familiar with the technologies highlighted in the checklist below in the event there is a need to move classes online. ▶

UTMB students are automatically enrolled in the UTMB Alerts (the University’s mass notification system), using basic directory information such as UTMB email and phone number. If you would like to verify your settings, visit UTMB Alerts Use MS Office 365 applications available to students. Visit Information Services: Working Remotely. Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Meeting Online options such as, Skype, Zoom and Teams. Students should expect that instructors will make changes to course syllabi as a result of campus closure. In some cases, instructors will be adjusting courses for remote (online) instruction and assessment, over a short period of time. Carefully review course syllabi for updates and information from instructor(s). Contact your instructor in a timely manner with questions or regarding any necessary accommodations. Please note that during the campus closure, students are expected to continue working on their coursework and education.

These organizations range from professional interest groups and service alliances to cultural organizations and recreational clubs. Each year these organizations continue UTMB’s tradition of community service, civic engagement, and cultural celebrations by organizing hundreds of projects for the campus and the Galveston community. The Office of Student Life oversees the registration and creation of all student organizations and acts as a resource for reserving university facilities, budgeting, event planning strategies, and more!

Student Government Association SGA is dedicated to improving the students’ academic, social, and cultural environments. Each student contributes indirectly to these aims by payment of the student services fee (during registration), a percentage of which goes to SGA. Students participate directly by taking advantage of the services offered and by getting involved in SGA itself. Dissemination of information about activities is through the Senators and through announcements posted on bulletin boards throughout the campus. The Student Senate consists of representatives from all four schools. This body controls all funds and determines the policies of SGA. It is important that responsible individuals are elected to this body as they represent the students and are instrumental in making decisions that will affect the student body. National Society For Leadership And Success

The Student Life Activities Committee (SLAC) is responsible for planning and hosting Student Life events and activities! SLAC meets once a month in the Jamail Student Center for a lunch meeting. Past events hosted by the SLACers include: • Paint & Sip Nights at Clay Cup Studios • Movie Nights • Fall Fest • Spring Fest • Summer Bash …and more! All students are welcome to join the SLACers and help plan new and exciting events.

The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) is the nation’s largest leadership honor society. In addition to honorable distinction, the Society provides a step-by-step program for members to build their leadership skills through participation in events hosted by the Office of Student Life. Membership in NSLS is for life and provides access to benefits including scholarships and awards, on-campus events, corporate discounts, recommendation letters, and more. At UTMB, we aim to make NSLS a chance for students to work interprofessionally – gaining leadership experience and building important communication skills. NSLS events include:

The Honor Pledge is a very important statement that revolves around three key principles: Integrity, Compassion and Respect. These are the three principles which represent the foundation upon which UTMB thrives for as an institution. The writings have no meaning unless each and every one of you implements these principles into your daily lives and remember to always lead by example. CA MPUS SAFETY UTMB POLICE CONTACT INFORMATION The UTMB Police Department provides a safe and secure campus where the pursuit of higher education, research, and health care can be achieved. Please read below to see how to contact the UTMB Police, as well as what information they may need in an emergency response situation. UTMB Police can be contacted in any of the following ways: Emergency phone numbers: • Call boxes are located in parking garages and on emergency poles around campus: Red Button calls 9-1-1 (UTMB PD Dispatch) • To call from a cell phone: Dial 9-1-1. When calling from a cell phone, the call will initially go to Galveston PD. Information Needed in Emergency Response When the UTMB police respond to emergency calls, certain information is needed depending on the situation. Read below for more information. If the emergency is regarding a suspect, the UTMB police need to know the following: • • • • • • • • 14

Is the suspect still in the area? Gender/Race of suspect Complexion/Facial hair Color of suspect’s eyes Is the suspect wearing glasses? Unusual marks, scars, tattoos Description of clothing/jewelry Any odors (alcohol, drugs, cigarette smoke, cologne, aftershave, etc.)

If the emergency is involving campus safety, the UTMB police need to know the following: • • • • • • •

What happened? When? Were there injuries? Is there a suspect? Where? Was/is there a weapon? If a vehicle is involved, what is the make/model/ color? • Which direction did the suspect go? • Are there any witnesses? Personal Safety For your personal protection, the UTMB police: • Respond to requests for emergency assistance • Respond to requests for motorist assistance ▪ Battery jumps ▪ Vehicle unlocks ▪ Air for low tires • Initiate investigations of criminal activity • Respond to requests for safety escorts during the hours of darkness through the safety watch program ▪ An officer will either walk with the individual or provide a ride in a UTMB Police Department vehicle to any location on campus or to the individual’s vehicle if it is parked in one of the UTMB parking garages or lots ▪ Call (409) 772-2691 or ask any officer • Provide highly visible patrols throughout the UTMB campus 24 hours a day • Provide Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) class ▪ 12-hour basic self-defense class designed for women ▪ Endorsed by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement


CA MPUS SAFETY UTMB Safe App We care about your safety! UTMB Safe App is available to download on Google Play or in the App Store. You can download the app for iOS here or for Android here.

Student Bicycle Registration and Maintenance The UTMB Police Department offers a free bicycle U-Lock and Rear-Light to each UTMB student who registers their bicycle! Registering your bicycle will help in the recovery and return of your bicycle in the event it is stolen. The U-Lock is issued to secure your bicycle at the provided campus bicycle racks. This is a proactive approach to help reduce bicycle thefts. How to Register your Bicycle 1. Complete the Online Form here. 2. Bring your bicycle, UTMB Student ID, and Online Form to the Police Administration Office in Rebecca Sealy 2.712. 3. The officer will verify your information, record your bicycle serial number, take a photo of your bicycle, and issue you a U-Lock and Rear-Light (while supplies last).

Maintenance consists of basic services, i.e. oil on chain, air in tire, etc. Services are free of charge. The key is to know what your options are when they do. UTMB has specific plans for emergency preparedness: UTMB Emergency Operations Plan. CA MPUS SAFETY Online Training for Campus Safety UTMB cares about your safety and wants you to be prepared should an active shooter event occur. Detailed information on these programs and how to access them can be found below: Active Shooter, What You Can Do The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announces the availability of a new Independent Study Course titled: Active Shooter, What You Can Do (IS-907), a no-cost training course developed to provide the public with guidance on how to prepare for and respond to active shooter crisis situations. An active shooter is defined in the course as an individual who is “engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area. In most cases, there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims.” This new online training is available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Emergency Management Institute (EMI) at https://training.fema.gov/is/ courseoverview.aspx?code=IS-907. Safety videos: “Shots Fired on Campus” Would you know what to do if someone started firing a gun on campus? The UTMB Police Department offers four safety videos for faculty, staff, students and health care workers. These videos are offered to assist you with information on how to respond in the event of an active shooter situation. • • • •

Obtaining/Replacing a Badge • The UTMB ID Badge is issued upon employment or enrollment, as a student, at UTMB and to UTMBaffiliated individuals (based on specific criteria). Only one active badge may be carried. The badge is valid for the duration of employment, affiliation, or enrollment as a student at UTMB. • The first UTMB ID Badge for employees is included in your student fees. The replacement charge for a lost or negligently damaged badge will be $20.00. The ID Badge/Smart Card should not be folded, have holes poked in it for any type of pin, or have any stickers affixed to it. Individuals will be responsible for the replacement cost due to these types of damages. • A stolen badge will be replaced at no charge, provided a police report associated with the theft is shown to police. There is no charge to replace old or worn-out badges. Basic ID badges are intended for special or short-term applications and are not available to students, faculty, or staff. Badges must be returned to the UTMB Police Department – Badge Office upon graduation or departure from UTMB.

Types of Loans

The Process

A Subsidized loan is awarded on the basis of financial need. Interest does not accrue on the loan while the student is in school. During this time, the federal government pays the interest on the loan. Interest will begin to accrue when the student begins repayment or deferment. Only undergraduate students are eligible for subsidized loans.

UTMB is a Direct Loan Institution. This means that your financial aid money comes directly to the institution from the Department of Education and is disbursed to you through us. Tuition and fees that are owed are taken out and the balance is sent to you via direct deposit or a check sent to your current mailing address.

An Unsubsidized Loan is not based on financial need. Interest begins to accrue from the day the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full. Students can choose to pay the interest while they are in school or allow it to accumulate until repayment. Remember that paying the interest while you are in school will save you more money over the life of the loan!

To sign up for the installment plan, please log into MySTAR through Student Financials. This is especially important if you are paying cash for tuition, or if you are in the School of Medicine or in a program with a clinical year, where your tuition is billed by the year instead of semester. Financial aid students with a semester schedule will not need to sign up.

Each school has an open application period in which the application will be available to access. Students will be notified via their UTMB email address how to apply and the dates in which the application will be available. Once the application period closes, the scholarship committee will meet within approximately 2-3 weeks to select the recipients. Once all recipients have been selected, an award notification letter will be emailed via the student’s UTMB email address.

UTMB has numerous endowed scholarships available for students to apply for annually. Scholarships are considered financial aid and will be reflected on your award letter. Eligibility In order to be eligible for scholarships, you must be in good standing, both academically and professionally and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. If you are an undergraduate student in the Clinical Laboratory Sciences or Respiratory Care Program in the School of Health Professions, you are required to have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA for general scholarships. To be considered for need-based scholarships, you must complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA can be accessed at https://studentaid.gov/h/applyfor-aid/fafsa. In order to sign the FAFSA and access your Federal Student Aid online, you must sign up for a username and password (if you do not have one). Our school code is 013976. Once a recipient receives their notification letter, they are required to write a thank you letter to the donor within two weeks. A copy of the letter must be uploaded into the scholarship application system for approval prior to the letter being mailed. After the Scholarship Office approves the thank you letter, the funds will be released for disbursement. If any tuition and fees are currently owed the scholarship funds will pay these in full prior to a refund being issued. NOTE: Scholarships funds will be disbursed in full in a onetime payment only. Pay Your Bill: Students may pay their bills online by e-check or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover and AMEX) by logging in to your MySTAR and selecting Student Center and Make a Payment. Billing Cycle: Monthly e-mail reminders are sent throughout the semester to your designated UTMB e-mail account. Please check your account on a regular basis for important information. Payment Plans: UTMB does offer a Tuition Payment Plan. A payment plan must be submitted for each semester and each payment plan has a $50.00 non-refundable processing fee. You may sign up for the Payment Plan by logging into MyStar>Financial Account Tile>Enroll in Payment Plan. If you are receiving financial aid and are not a School of Medicine student, all of your tuition/ fees for the semester will be paid with your aid so there is no need to sign up for the payment plan. Helping students make healthy decisions! Student Health and Counseling (SHC) provides primary care for enrolled students. Students from all participating schools have the opportunity to be an integral part in planning efforts and the operation of SHC through participation on the Student Health Governance Committee. Through the payment of student fees, students are eligible for services. Confidentiality Your right to privacy is important to us. We are required to hold medical and counseling records in confidence, except as authorized by a signed release of medical information or as required by law. Hours/Appointments Student Health and Counseling is open Monday through Friday 7 a.m.–5 p.m., except holidays and the winter recess. Students are seen by appointment. Same day appointments are available for acute care and other services. Appointments are required for all immunizations. You can help us provide the best possible service by arriving on time for your appointments and by canceling or rescheduling appointments as early as possible when necessary. Nurse triage is available 24 hours a day with physician back up available for consultation. Occupational Exposures Occupational exposures to blood and bodily fluids or other communicable diseases that occur while in the student role are assessed and treated by Student Health and Counseling. After determining the status of the source’s lab results, students are placed in a follow-up program. Students should seek evaluation and treatment within 2 hours of an occupational exposure. No appointment is necessary. Should an exposure occur while a student is at an off-campus site from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., the student should come to Student Health and Counseling within the 2-hour window. Otherwise, immediately notify us at (409) 747-9508, for directions on how to proceed. When we are closed, please 22

call the Access Center or go to the nearest emergency room within 2 hours of the exposure. If after regular business hours and on the UTMB campus, please report to the Emergency Department for evaluation. Houston based or Austin based School of Medicine students should follow the designated affiliates’ process for initial evaluation and treatment, in addition to contacting UTMB Student Health and Counseling for follow up instructions. Medical Health Insurance/Fees Student Health provider visits and services, laboratory testing, x-rays, diagnostic tests, immunizations, medications, and additional services rendered by other UTMB providers are billed to each student’s medical health insurance. Emergency room visits or hospitalizations are also billed to each student’s medical health insurance. Co-pays and deductibles are the responsibility of the student. Professional services for counseling visits are not billed to a student’s medical health insurance, instead, counseling visits are covered by student fees. UTMB recognizes the importance of providing an environment that encourages fitness and personal wellbeing. In 1968, the graduates and friends of UTMB contributed funds to establish the Alumni Field House. For over 40 years the UTMB Alumni Field House has been a place for students, alumni, employees, retirees, and their families to unwind, get in shape, and have fun. Thanks to the generous support of The Sealy & Smith Foundation, the Moody Foundation, and alumni funds, the Field House is a state-of-the-art fitness and wellness facility offering the latest in exercise equipment as well as opportunities for research, work/study programs, and internships. The facility is approximately 49,000 square feet. Through payment of the student service fee, each student has a membership at the UTMB Alumni Field House. Students may obtain a family membership for their immediate family members (spouse and children under twenty-two years of age) living in the same household for a yearly fee of $273. Lockers are also available for an additional fee. A current member may obtain a guest pass for a visitor, which costs $10 for the day. Students can acquire these for $5 per guest pass. This pass must be used on the date of purchase. The passes can be obtained from the Field House. Guest fees are not transferable, and guests must show proper ID with their guest pass.

Amenities of the athletic facility include: • Regulation basketball/volleyball courts with outlined track • Two racquetball courts (reservations suggested) • Expansive strength training area featuring Cybex and Hammer Strength machines and free weights • Cardiovascular equipment including treadmills, upright and recumbent stationary bikes, stair climbers, elliptical trainers, arc trainers, and rowing machines. • 2,000-square-foot aerobic/multipurpose room with hardwood floor and complete audio system. These permits may be purchased from the Parking Office located at 914 Market Street, Galveston, TX 77555, inside Campus Store on first floor. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on Institutional Holidays. You must bring your UTMB ID Badge and vehicle license plate number. There are 70 spaces at the Field House lot located on Ferry Road and Mechanic next to the tennis courts and approximately 42 student spaces have been added to the parking lot at the corner of 14th and Market Street. These spaces are located along the sides of the lot and are clearly marked in black on the car stops. To avoid a parking citation when parking in this lot, please park only in the spaces identified as “Student Parking Only.” There are two rows in the center of the lot, the south row is for students. There are seven spaces in the rear of the former Child Care building accessible through the alley between 12th and 13th St. The north side of U-lot, located at 13th & The Strand, has approximately 40 student parking spaces. Study areas on the ground floor of Old Red include a quiet study room, a computer study room with 27 inch Apple iMacs in addition to Dell computers and two group study rooms. Needing a study break? On the ground floor of Old Red you will also find a game room equipped with ping pong tables, a pool table, a foosball table, and two televisions with hookups for our Wii, Playstation 3, and XBOX 360 video game consoles, which are available for check out in Office of Student Life. All of these rooms include library style tables and chairs as well as comfortable sofas and arm chairs for a relaxing study environment. Wi-fi is available throughout both buildings and is also accessible in the outdoor eating area in between the buildings. Check out the flat-screen televisions and bulletin boards posted throughout the buildings for more information on campus activities. Students have access to these areas 24 hours a day using their UTMB ID badge to enter after hours. The Office of Student Life manages these areas. If students do not complete their mandatory Compliance department learning plan (most students will be assigned Annual Required Student Training), a hold is placed on their account. Please disregard due dates generated by the learning management system and follow the Academic Enterprise requirement mentioned above. Holds on your account will result in an inability to obtain financial aid, register for classes and obtain transcripts or diplomas.

ONLINE TRAINING INSTRUCTIONS Follow these steps: Using Google Chrome (preferred browser) visit https:// learn.utmb.edu or from iUTMB, click the link on the top left tool bar titled: Annual Online Training and follow the steps below. Turn off your pop up blocker and clear your cache Complete your PROFILE questions and click submit. Refresh your screen. Select MY REQUIRED TRAINING under the MY TRAINING drop down menu. Open the LEARNING PLANS and launch the individual courses within the learning plan by clicking the launch buttons. Each course will have associated content and assessments. Once all courses within the learning plan are complete, the entire learning plan will convert to complete. You must pass the assessments at the end of your course content with a score of 80% or higher. When you finish the assessment, click Finish. If you fail the assessment, please click the RETRY button until you pass. The course will then take you to the launch screen again. Do not launch again. Click the X in the top right corner. It will take you back to the list of courses but will not designate that particular course is complete until you either refresh or follow the next step. At the Learning Plan title, click the Back button. This will take you back to the list of courses within your learning plan. Your completion of the course will show here. Click the title of the next course in your Learning Plan. When you have completed all of the courses within the Learning Plan, refresh your screen again, from there you can navigate for further information such as certificates and transcripts. UTMB’s Health Education Center is an essential part of the university’s long-term vision to improve health and lives in Texas and beyond. It provides both the space and the technology to support increased enrollment and train students to work in interprofessional teams for the benefit of the patients they will one day serve. The 160,000 sq. ft., five-floor building is the first facility of its kind at a university in Texas, and represents the most significant additional to UTMB’s infrastructure in more than 40 years. The Health Education Center (HEC) officially opened its doors on August 1, 2019. Hosting simulation courses since June of the same year, this 161,000 sq ft facility boasts the latest technology in human, non-human, and virtual reality simulation educational equipment. Staffed with experienced support staff, the HEC’s teaching abilities are augmented through strategic faculty partnerships including leaders in simulation training from the SON, SOM, SHP, and GSBS. The HEC is dedicated to providing top quality educational experiences for all of our students, fellows, staff, and community members.

▶ The 3rd floor has 16 individual patient rooms covering adult, child, infant and maternity simulations.

This floor also has a large flexible space that can be set up as a PACU or an OB suite, as well as 2 large debriefing rooms, 2 small debriefing and 1 monitoring & control room

▶ The 2nd floor has 3 large skills labs offering a total of 30 physical examination spaces, a virtual skills

lab, 3 debriefing rooms and 1 monitoring & control room

▶ The HEC hosts numerous task training pieces of equipment as well as over 60 low, mid and high-

fidelity manikins for creating real-life simulations

▶ The control rooms on each floor allow seamless operation of manikins while remotely being able to

view and record simulations through integrated software

The Office of Interprofessional Education coordinates a variety of initiatives designed to help students from all four schools at UTMB to learn from, with, and about each other’s professions. Activities such as small group experiences, practice and service-learning opportunities and simulation activities will be selected and/or enhanced as represented within our model. UTMB embraces the national definition of interprofessional education created by the World Health Organization that states, “Interprofessional education occurs when students from two or more professions learn about, from, and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes.” UTMB embodies this definition by providing a culture of interprofessional education and practice through a myriad of experiences to help realize the following vision, mission, and goals: Vision: UTMB leads in interprofessional education by preparing tomorrow’s healthcare teams with interprofessional opportunities today. Mission: UTMB will prepare students to work in collaborative, interprofessional teams to enhance patient-centered healthcare through a continuum of educational and practice opportunities. Goals: ▶ Enhance the learning environment to prepare students to work on interprofessional teams. ▶ Equip students to graduate with necessary skills for work on interprofessional teams.

The following IPE endorsed initiatives and courses will be held during the Fall/Spring academic year: 1. Disaster Day – This student-led experience provides a large-scale simulation of a community emergency. Participants play an active role in the simulation designed to help healthcare professionals learn how to work collaboratively in response to a community disaster. Participants will be required to attend a training session prior to the event. To view a two-minute video: Disaster Day 2019 video 2. “What’s Wrong With Warren?” – An Interprofessional, Interactive Case Study and Discussion. This event centers on a case of a high school student who develops a life-threatening infection. Students from all disciplines will meet in faculty-facilitated small groups to discuss their roles and responsibilities. A consultation phase will follow in which students will meet with various professions. A debrief will bring all students together for discussion and to create a timeline that displays the involvement of disciplines throughout the case. The case will introduce concepts to public/population health and will include the following three phases of care – acute response, community/public health response, and aftercare/ rehabilitation. 3. Disability & Healthcare Symposium – Held in collaboration with the Physical Therapy Department in the SHP, Physicians for Human Rights, Abilities Resource Group, and Institute of Medical Humanities, this experience explores ethical and historical perspectives of patients, providers, and communities. Following an open panel discussion

T H E HEALTH EDUCATI ON CENT ER with key disabilities specialists and patients, students discuss related topics in interprofessional groups with a community member. 4. Bafa Bafa – This experience is a face-to-face simulation intended to improve participants’ crosscultural competence by helping them understand the impact of culture on the behavior of people and groups. Participants experience “cultural shock” by interacting with a culture that has different values, behaviors, and problem-solving tactics. IPEP collaborates with Global Health and Preventive Medicine and the Public Health Program to present this activity to interprofessional students. 5. Poverty Simulation – Collaborating with Texas AHEC East and the Public Health Program, this simulation allows students to spend a simulated month in poverty much like what is experienced by our community’s individuals and families. This interactive event promotes poverty awareness, increased understanding and inspires local change.

How will I as a student benefit from IPE? Students develop skills and gain experiences working collaboratively across cultures with patients, patients’ families, other healthcare professionals, and communitybased providers to enhance health care and wellness. Graduates of UTMB Health will be leaders and innovators, advancing collaborative interprofessional teamwork across every area of health care. UTMB Interprofessional Scholars Program Through IPEP, UTMB Health students will have the opportunity to earn the distinction of “Interprofessional Scholar”, by participating in collaborative interprofessional educational experiences, pursuing a project with an interprofessional team of students, or producing scholarly work that reflects their experiences.
