Morning Routines and Back to School Routines bring predictability and comfort, easing anxiety for both students and teachers. For children, routines foster a sense of independence and provide daily opportunities to build healthy self-care habits they’ll carry into adulthood. For educators, a consistent morning routine sets a positive tone for the day—helping you feel prepared, focused, and ready to support your students. When planning your morning routine it’s important to do two things: 1. Take into account the needs of you and your child(ren) 2. Start the night before Ways you can prepare the night before: 1. Lay out outfits for the next day 2. Plan breakfast 3. Consider your FULL schedule for the next day, to ensureyou have anything extra you’ll need for before or after school and work

Avoiding Sports-Related Heat Injuries In Texas, when summer comes to a close and school begins, the heat and humidity don’t magically disappear, so it’s important for everyone—especially those engaging in fall sports—to stay vigilant and mindful of how they’re feeling when practicing and playing outdoors.Signs and symptoms of heat-related illness, including heat exhaustion, include nausea, fatigue, headaches, and muscle cramps. To beat the heat and help prevent heat exhaustion, UTMB professionals have the following recommendations: 1. Take breaks in the shade and air conditioning 2. Remove heavy pads and layers when cooling down 3. Gradually build heat tolerance by starting with shorter periods outdoors and slowly increasing exposure 4. Drink plenty of liquids 5. Replenish lost salts if you’re sweating heavily

Breast Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in American women. However, the American Cancer Society reports that breast cancer deaths are declining, in part due to early detection through routine screenings. Breast Health: What You Need To Know There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to breast health. Even among experts, recommendations for breast cancer screening can vary. What’s most important is recognizing that each person’s risk factors are unique— and understanding those risks early on can make a difference. You’re never too young to learn about the signs, symptoms, and risks of breast cancer. In fact, you can begin taking steps to manage your breast health as soon as you start visiting a gynecologist—even in your twenties. Here’s how to get started: 1. Know your risk – Talk to your family about any history of cancer 2. Know your breasts – Be familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel. 3. Get screened – Work with your health care provider to determine the right time to begin screening based on your individual risk

UTMB Health offers these simple tips to help you manage stress and focus on what truly matters: •

Avoid overscheduling – It’s OK to say no and protect your time

Set a realistic budget – Manage gift giving with a financial plan that works for you

Prioritize self-care – Get enough rest, avoid overindulging, and make time for healthy habits like reading, music, or creative activities

Respect differences – Not everyone shares the same beliefs or traditions; focus on common ground

Honor your emotions – If you’re feeling overwhelmed or down, talk to someone you trust

Be prepared when traveling – Know where the nearest ER or Urgent Care is located in case of an emergency

Stay Active Regular physical activity is essential. Try to move throughout the day, whether it’s taking short walks, using the stairs, or riding a bike. Challenging brain teasers stimulate the formation of new neural connections, supporting neuroplasticity and cognitive flexibility.

Colorectal Cancer Screening: What You Need to Know The American Cancer Society recommends that individuals of average risk begin screening for colorectal cancer at age 45. If no issues are found, screenings can be done once every 10 years. These tests can detect precancerous colon polyps, which can be removed before turning into cancer. People at increased or high risk may need to start screening earlier or have more frequent tests. This includes those with: • A strong family history of colorectal cancer or certain polyps • A personal history of colorectal cancer or certain polyps • Inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease) • A family history of hereditary colorectal cancer (e.g., Lynch syndrome or FAP) • Previous radiation treatment to the abdomen or pelvic area for another cancer

Advocating for Your Child’s Health As a parent, advocating for your child’s health is key to ensuring they receive the best care. The first step is recognizing the importance of building strong relationships with healthcare providers, understanding the healthcare system, and empowering your child to advocate for themselves as they grow. Establishing a trusting relationship with your child’s healthcare team is essential. Open, honest communication with doctors and nurses helps ensure your child gets the best care possible. Prepare for appointments by bringing any questions or concerns, and don’t hesitate to ask for clarification. Trust is built over time, so it’s important to work with healthcare professionals who value your input. Regularly updating providers on your child’s health ensures coordinated and comprehensive care.

Learning More about Stroke: Risk Factors and Prevention A stroke, or “brain attack,” occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked or a blood vessel bursts, causing brain tissue to die. This can lead to brain damage, disability, or even death. Strokes are classified into two types: Ischemic Stroke: When the blood supply to the brain is blocked. Hemorrhagic Stroke: When a blood vessel in the brain bursts. Who’s at risk? Anyone, including children, can experience a stroke at any time. In the U.S., about 800,000 people have a stroke each year, with 1 in 4 being recurrent strokes. Unhealthy habits—like smoking, excessive drinking, and lack of exercise—can increase your risk, but they can also be changed to reduce the chances of having a stroke. Can a stroke be prevented? High blood pressure is the most significant treatable risk factor for stroke. Managing blood pressure through lifestyle changes and medication is key to lowering stroke risk.

Build Healthy Summer Media Habits for the Family Once the excitement of summer sets in, screen time can quickly become a challenge for school-age children. The American Academy of Pediatrics offers helpful guidelines for creating a family media plan to set healthy boundaries: • • • • • • • • •

Monitor your children’s media use for health and safety Stop device use an hour before bedtime Avoid letting children sleep with devices (e.g., smartphones) Plan media-free times together, like family dinners Choose media-free areas in your home, such as bedrooms Engage in family activities that promote well-being (sports, reading, conversation) Set a good example: turn off the TV and put phones on “do not disturb” during family time Share media rules with caregivers or grandparents to ensure consistency Discuss online citizenship and safety with your children and teens
