One of our Core Values at USSSA is “Building and Strengthening Relationships.”
I feel this core value is one that sets us apart from any other association.
In talking with many vendors, they frequently tell me that the amount of sharing in our association is vastly different from other conferences they attend with our willingness to share information with each other.
Our association is united by a shared passion for swim education and water safety. We can truly amplify our impact and achieve our collective goals when we nurture these relationships.
Building relationships within the USSSA extends beyond mere networking; it’s about fostering connections that inspire growth, learning, and mutual support. By engaging with other members, sharing experiences, and exchanging ideas, we not only enrich our own personal and professional journeys but also contribute to the advancement of our industry.
Strengthening relationships within our association also entails reaching out to our broader community, including parents, students, and industry partners. By cultivating trust, communication, and understanding, we can create an environment where everyone feels valued, heard, and empowered to contribute to our shared mission.
I encourage you to prioritize building and strengthening relationships at every opportunity. Whether it’s through attending conferences, participating in workshops, or simply reaching out to a fellow member, each interaction has the potential to foster meaningful connections.
My top suggestion for those seeking to form more relationships within the swim school community is to initiate introductions with others. Rob and I make it a personal challenge during each conference to socialize and dine with different individuals. By sitting with other members or sharing meals, we were able to meet more people within the association. This proactive approach has contributed to the lifelong friendships we have formed. So, whether you’re a newcomer or a seasoned member, I encourage you to take on the challenge at your next conference…seek out new people and create connections that could last a lifetime!
Thank you for your dedication to our association. I am looking forward to seeing you all at our National Conference this year in Las Vegas!!!
I don’t have to tell you that being a business owner can many times feel like a solitary journey filled with uncertainties and challenges that you feel left to face on your own. That is why I love the USSSA core value of building and strengthening relationships. When you are a member of USSSA, you don’t have to do it alone.
Research emphasizes the importance of peer networks in enhancing entrepreneurial performance. A study published in the Journal of Business Venturing found that entrepreneurs who actively engage in peer networking experience greater business growth and innovation compared to their counterparts who operate in isolation. Peer relationships, like the ones built through participation in USSSA events and activities, foster resilience, knowledge sharing, and problem solving.
One key factor in developing peer relationships is as Greg Norman said, “you only get out of it what you put into it.” What does that mean for USSSA members? Don’t just come to a conference or a workshop and wait for people to approach you. Come with a few key questions or challenges you would like to discuss with others and then, introduce yourself and start a conversation with people you’ve never met before. We hear time and again what a wealth of knowledge our members have and how willing they are to share that knowledge with others. And in that vein, give some thought to what you are really good at and what knowledge you could share with someone you meet at conference or online. It can be scary, but by putting yourself out there, you could find your next money saving solution or revenue generating idea!
The other good news is that you don’t have to wait until this fall’s conference to get started building your peer network with fellow USSSA members. We have a number of opportunities, such as our Small Schools Virtual Brunch, On Topic Sharing Solutions, and our popular private Facebook group where you can connect with fellow members to get your questions answered and start building relationships. Check out our website under events for details on all of our upcoming events and conferences. To join our private Facebook group, from your personal Facebook account, search for “USSSA Executive Group” and ask to join.
Membership in USSSA presents a number of opportunities for swim school owners and staff to expand their knowledge, forge strategic alliances, and help shape the future of this great industry. We look forward to seeing you engaged in sharing and inspiring each other in support of better, safer learn to swim businesses. Happy networking!
Trust is essential for effective teamwork and collaboration. EOS encourages leaders to foster a culture of trust and accountability by setting clear expectations, honoring commitments, and holding team members accountable for results. When colleagues trust each other to fulfill their roles and responsibilities, they can work together more confidently and cohesively, strengthening their relationships in the process. The tool we use to nurture more trust and selfawareness is The Trust Builders tool.
Building and strengthening relationships in your business with the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS).
In any business, strong relationships are the cornerstone of success. Whether you’re an owner, a manager, team leader, or team member, fostering positive connections with your teammates is crucial for productivity, innovation, and overall job satisfaction. One framework that can significantly assist in this endeavor is the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS). Here’s how EOS can help you build and strengthen relationships in your business:
EOS provides a clear framework for defining roles and responsibilities within an organization. The tool we use to do this is called The Accountability Chart. By clearly determining what functions the business needs and delineating who is responsible for what, team members can collaborate more effectively and avoid misunderstandings or conflicts. This clarity fosters trust and accountability among teammates, strengthening relationships and promoting a sense of unity and purpose.
Communication breakdowns are a common source of tension and conflict in the workplace. EOS emphasizes the importance of open and transparent communication through regular meetings, known as Level 10 Meetings, where team members discuss key issues, solve problems, and track progress towards goals. By providing a structured forum for communication, EOS helps ensure that everyone is on the same page, leading to better collaboration and stronger relationships.
EOS helps organizations define a clear and compelling vision for the future, known as the Vision/Traction Organizer (V/TO). By aligning everyone around a common purpose and direction, EOS creates a sense of unity and alignment among team members. When coworkers share a common vision and understand how their individual deliverables contribute to the organization’s success, they are more likely to collaborate effectively and support each other, leading to stronger relationships and greater collective achievement.
EOS promotes a culture of continuous improvement by encouraging regular feedback and self-assessment. Through tools like the People Analyzer and the Issues Solving Track, team members can provide feedback to each other in a constructive and respectful manner, helping to identify areas for growth and development. By fostering a culture of feedback and continuous improvement, EOS helps colleagues support each other’s professional development, strengthening their relationships in the process.
Ultimately, the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) provides a powerful framework for building and strengthening relationships at work. By clarifying roles and responsibilities, improving communication, building trust and accountability, creating a shared vision, and encouraging feedback and continuous improvement, EOS helps team members collaborate more effectively, support each other’s growth and development, and ultimately achieve greater success together. Through its focus on alignment, accountability, and results, EOS lays the foundation for a positive and productive work environment where strong relationships thrive.

As members of the US Swim School Association, we are united by a shared commitment to providing exceptional swimming education and experiences for our students and families. At the core of achieving this goal lies the importance of building and strengthening relationships within our swim school communities.
Relationships serve as the foundation upon which successful swim schools are built. It’s not just about delivering top-notch swimming instruction; it’s about providing a complete experience from the moment our guests walk through the door until they leave. Every interaction matters, and it’s essential for each guest, whether swimming or not, to depart with a positive impression.
Ensuring that every guest feels valued and welcomed is paramount to creating a positive and supportive environment in our swim schools. Here are some key ways we can achieve this:
1. Make them feel like we want them here: Greet every guest with warmth and enthusiasm, letting them know that they are genuinely welcome in our swim school community.
2. Make them feel like we’re excited to see them: Show genuine excitement and interest when families arrive, making them feel appreciated and valued from the moment they walk through the door.
3. Make them feel like we care about their success and fun: Take the time to understand each guest’s goals and aspirations, and tailor an approach to help them achieve success and enjoy their swimming experience to the fullest.
4. Make them feel like we care about their safety: Prioritize safety at all times, providing clear instructions, guidance, and supervision to ensure that every guest feels secure and protected while in our care.
Continued on next page...
We can accomplish these goals through simple gestures like smiles, eye contact, and friendly interactions. However, we can truly excel at making our swim families feel valued and welcomed by showing genuine curiosity about every one of them. Taking the time to listen, engage, and connect on a personal level will go a long way in creating a positive and memorable experience for everyone in our swim school community.
At the heart of our swim schools are the relationships we foster. Whether it’s the bond between instructors and students, the trust between parents and staff, or the connections formed within our team, these relationships serve as the foundation for creating a supportive and nurturing learning environment. Your swim school is more than just a place to learn swimming skills; it’s a vibrant community where strong relationships are forged and nurtured. As the owner or director of your swim school, it is your responsibility to be passionate about fostering these connections and ensuring that every member of your community feels valued and supported.
Prioritizing relationship-building permeates every aspect of our operations. By cultivating a culture of warmth, inclusivity, and communication, you can ensure that every member of your swim school community feels respected and appreciated.
Your instructors and staff are the heart of your swim school, and it is crucial to support and empower them. You can do this by providing opportunities for professional development, training, and growth, and cultivating a team of passionate individuals dedicated to delivering exceptional swimming education. Furthermore, recognize the importance of giving back to the broader community. Through partnerships with local organizations and outreach initiatives, strive to make a positive impact beyond the walls of your swim school. By coming together to support causes that matter to you and your team, you will strengthen your connections with your community and spread kindness and generosity.
In conclusion, building and strengthening relationships are fundamental to the success of our swim schools. By prioritizing these connections, we can create a welcoming and supportive environment where everyone can thrive and enjoy the benefits of swimming education. Together, let’s continue to foster meaningful relationships and make a positive impact in our swim school communities, ensuring that every member feels valued, supported, and part of something truly special.

Every day, CareerPlug clients reach out to our team of experts to ask what they can do to improve their hiring results. We know that for our clients who own small businesses and franchises, hiring and recruiting is just one of many responsibilities they juggle day-to-day. Our goal is to make hiring easier so they can spend less time hiring and get back to running their business.
That’s why we have hiring and recruiting experts like Gabe Wilson. In his role as a hiring consultant, Gabe has advised hundreds of business owners and hiring managers on the strategic improvements they can make to attract more quality applicants and hire the right people.
His advice is so helpful that he’s become a favorite resource for our clients, with one business owner writing: “Gabe helped me to get totally started. He helped me to setup my job description, helped with the title to attract more job seekers. He helped with automation of a couple of steps, and to create a template to send emails. I had over 20 applicants the FIRST DAY!” – Mary Conrad Joe Homebuyer of Kentuckiana. CareerPlug’s Senior Content Marketing Manager Desiree Echevarria sat down with Gabe to learn more about the burning questions our clients have asked him over the years, along with the advice that’s been the most effective.
The number one concern we hear from hiring managers is a lack of qualified applicants for their open roles. It can be a stressful situation, oftentimes feeling like it’s beyond their control. Some employers believe that their only options are to spend more money to sponsor their job postings or raise their pay when they may not have the budget to do so.
But Gabe challenges employers to think about the problem differently, saying, “It doesn’t have to do with pay. Even if you don’t offer the highest pay, you still have a great chance of landing that quality hire. You just have to take a few simple steps, and [think about] what the job seeker’s perspective is.”
Gabe’s number one piece of advice is: include your compensation in your job description. By adding a pay range, you’re making it easy for job seekers to decide if it’s worth applying. Remember that job seekers are busy too, and if they’re presented with a choice between spending their time applying for a role that lists pay or one that doesn’t, they’re usually going to apply to the one with the pay transparency.
So the problem may not be that you’re paying enough, but that your pay is simply unknown.
Gabe’s second piece of advice: add a benefits and perks section in your job post. Some employers believe that these details are only valuable if they provide standard benefits like insurance or retirement plans. However, even if you lack these traditional benefits, it’s still worthwhile to highlight smaller perks, like fun company events or flexible working hours. It’s all about the framing – by showing off your company as an attractive place to work, job seekers will want to apply.
Gabe’s third tip: list the requirements and qualifications on your job posting. It sounds simple, but remember to write these with the job seeker’s perspective in mind. They need to be able to envision themselves succeeding in the role before they apply.
Continued on next page...
“The thing [applicants] want to know is: am I qualified? Are they clear on what the requirements are on the job posting?” Gabe says. You want to get job seekers to a place where they can say, “Okay, if I do apply for this, it’s worth it. It’s worth my time.”
When you take the time to write an effective job description, it allows job seekers to feel more confident about your opportunity. Removing those unknowns can convert an uncertain job seeker into a candidate for the role.
DO I REALLY NEED TO LIST COMPENSATION IN THE JOB POSTING? IN SHORT: YES.
But we certainly empathize with employers who feel hesitant to list pay in the job posting. Gabe makes a great case for why pay transparency is now becoming essential to your recruiting strategy on the job boards.
Gabe says, “If you don’t have pay listed, there’s a really good chance no one will ever see the posting. That sounds dramatic and extreme, but I think it’s the truth.”
This is especially true for jobs listed in the growing number of states that have passed pay transparency laws requiring employers to disclose compensation in job ads. For example, when New York’s pay transparency law went into effect in September 2023, Indeed began removing job postings that were missing compensation information.
It’s also important to remember that applicants tend to search for jobs using filters, and oftentimes they filter their search to only show them jobs that list compensation. If your job doesn’t have pay listed, high-quality candidates could be filtering out your jobs so that they never even see them.
HOW CAN I PREVENT CANDIDATE GHOSTING AND INTERVIEW NO-SHOWS?
Candidate ghosting and interview no-shows can prolong the hiring process and be frustrating for employers. According to Gabe, we need to take a step back and try to understand the root causes of disengaged candidates.
Gabe advises: “Don’t rely solely on email. Emails go to spam. I’ve heard from a lot of hiring managers that use texting with applicants first and responding before the other employers do.” Gabe says that his recommended best practice is to contact applicants within 24 hours at most – and even sooner is better.
“You can utilize some automation and get that sent out immediately within three minutes,” Gabe says. “You will be the number one employer, the first one to respond to these applicants, which gives you a really good chance [at increasing candidate engagement].”
Gabe also recommends that employers increase their interview availability to accommodate the schedules of busy candidates. Most candidates have jobs and it’s a huge commitment for them to take time off of work to go to an interview. If it’s at an inconvenient time for them, or something comes up at the last minute, they’ll often skip the interview because they just can’t make it work.
HOW SOON SHOULD I CONTACT APPLICANTS AFTER THEY APPLY?
“I would say 24 hours at the most,” Gabe says. “A few hours is what I would recommend.”
But why is it so important to contact candidates ASAP?
“If an applicant is moving along through the hiring process and there are three interview steps and they’re on step one, maybe another company reached out earlier and they already have that applicant on step two. They’re going to take that other job because they’re going to get that offer letter first,” Gabe says.
High-quality candidates will always have the freedom to be picky about where they want to work, and by moving them through the hiring process as quickly as possible, you’re signaling to them that you’re extremely interested and value what they bring to the table more than other employers do.
Luckily, there are tools that can help you move quickly with your top candidates. Using an applicant tracking system like CareerPlug can automate all of this instant candidate communication so that busy hiring managers don’t need to be glued to their phones all day.
Desiree shares her own experience using CareerPlug’s automations: “If you’re already a CareerPlug client, you can just automate this part of the hiring process. Set up Autopilot and you don’t even have to think about it. I’ve used it before and it contacts candidates immediately for me.”
Gabe says that while employers can use job board best practices to optimize their rankings (e.g. writing better job descriptions, pay transparency), he thinks that it’s actually more important for employers to turn their attention to diversifying their applicant sources and not relying solely on the job boards as their only source for high-quality applicants in the first place.
“When it comes to how to get more visibility, I would say: 1) let’s focus on the job description and 2) there’s different types of visibility. And that’s visibility from employee referrals, and Facebook, and social media, and some of these other sources.”
Instead of spending hundreds of dollars to promote your job board posts, you can use that money to create employer recognition incentives or bonuses for employee referrals. This not only strengthens your company culture, but also your job descriptions, allowing you to get testimonials and include the incentives in your job posts, leading to employee retention.
Gabe Wilson’s expert insights have one overarching theme: it’s important to view your hiring practices from the perspective of the job seeker. Be courteous and respect their time and effort. Taking those small steps like reaching out quickly or investing more energy into writing a high-quality job description can go a long way in converting job seekers into hires.
In time, the way you do one thing will be the way you do everything.

Start acting with the intention of being remarkable. Even if — maybe especially if— no one sees what you do.
As Will Guidara writes about the restaurant Eleven Madison Park in his book Unreasonable Hospitality: We trained the people setting the dining room to place every plate so that if a guest flipped it over to see who had made it, the Limoges stamp would be facing them, right side up.
Maybe one or two guests would flip that plate in a month. Even if they did, would they guess that the placement had been intentional? And some people probably turned over the plate in a way we didn’t anticipate, so that the manufacturer’s stamp wasn’t face up.
That was OK — because whether someone flipped it or not, that perfectly placed plate had already done what it needed to do. The way you do one thing is the way you do everything, and we found, over and over, that precision in the smallest of details translated to precision in bigger ones.
Placing a plate a certain way set the tone for how he, and his team, did their jobs. Attention, focus, and a commitment to excellence to one thing helped ensure attention, focus, and a commitment to excellence to everything.
That’s how you become remarkable: not through big ideas, or grand gestures, but by doing one small thing no one else does or would do:
• Like Nascar driver Kurt Busch, who texted me a few hours after I interviewed him to ask if I got everything I needed. Professional athletes don’t follow up. Kurt did.
• Like Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, who, when he found out I was giving a TED Talk said, “Let’s talk about that,” and gave me performance preparation tips and a much-needed pep talk. Notable people promoting something (which is the only reason they agree to interviews) never do that. Duff did.
• Like Richard Branson sending me a note to thank me for something I said about him. Iconic entrepreneurial billionaires don’t have to thank anyone for anything. Richard did.
If you want to achieve differently, start by acting differently. Don’t go with the flow. Don’t do what others do and expect to stand out, much less excel. That’s what most people do. That’s why the extra mile is such a lonely place. That’s also why the extra mile is a place filled with opportunities. Be early. Stay late. Make the extra phone call. Send the extra email. Do the extra research. Help a customer unload or unpack a shipment. Don’t wait to be asked; offer.
Every time you do something, think of one extra thing you can do — especially if other people aren’t doing that one thing. Sure, it’s hard.
But that’s what will make you different and, over time, will make you remarkable.
As Steve Jobs said: When you’re a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you’re not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall and nobody will ever see it. You’ll know it’s there, so you’re going to use a beautiful piece of wood on the back.
Start doing one thing, one thing with the intention of being remarkable, that other people may not notice or see. That will lead to doing more remarkable things, however small. Take the first step on the path and others will follow.
And in time, everyone will notice.

BY EMILY CORREA MARKETING DIRECTOR FOR JACKRABBIT TECHNOLOGIESEach year, Jackrabbit compiles years of data from different-sized swim schools, gymnastics, cheer, music, and performing arts businesses from around the world. These key metrics are anonymously aggregated to produce annual benchmark reports for the swim school, dance studio and youth activities industries with the goal of providing an impactful resource for businesses to base decisions on.
When looking at the 2024 Swim School Industry Benchmark Report, three big takeaways stand out from any other year’s data. Here are the findings and why they are important to your swim school for building and strengthening relationships with parents and staff.
ENROLLMENT GROWTH AND STEADY AGE GROUP PREFERENCES
When growing your student count, it’s essential to understand the age of students your school should be targeting. The 2023 Swim School Benchmark Report shed light on the most popular student age groups for swim schools with 2-4 years and 5-7 years old being the top two. In addition to using this key finding to target new audiences, your swim school can use this data to make modifications to current operations to better strengthen relationships with your current customers.
5-7 YEARS > 2 YEARS 2-4 YEARS
Two data points from the 2023 report show a correlation between engaging with digital tools and resources and the enhancement of client and staff engagement.
1. The surge in usage of the Jackrabbit Parent Portal, especially among larger enterprises, underscores the pivotal role of digital tools in nurturing customer relationships. By harnessing data-driven insights, businesses can better understand and cater to client needs, thereby fostering deeper connections and loyalty.
2. An uptick in average staff count in 2023 brought about increased class coverage and enhanced customer service—a testament to the vital role swim instructors play in relationship-building. Effective staff communication and a focus on your swim school’s culture are essential for nurturing meaningful connections with clients, ensuring their needs are met with diligence and care.
Another top finding from Jackrabbit’s 2023 Swim School Benchmark Report was seasonality variability, making clear the seasonal patterns in swim school enrollment peaks and valleys. By aligning promotional efforts with peak months and addressing drop rates during specific periods, businesses can optimize resource allocation and cultivate sustained engagement with clients.
Read the 2024 Swim School Industry Benchmark Report to take a deep dive into the data and see how your business measures up against others in the industry. The key takeaways, trends, and additional insights you can find in the benchmark report will give you ideas on how to make this year your best yet. www.jackrabbitclass.com/ benchmarks/

WE OWN A COUPLE OF BUSY SWIM SCHOOLS THAT USE LIQUID BLEACH AND MURIATIC ACID AS OUR TREATMENT CHEMICALS. WE USE STENNER FEEDERS, WHICH WORK GREAT, BUT THE LINES KEEP ON CLOGGING. SOMETIMES IT HAPPENS ABRUPTLY, AND WE HAVE TO HAND-FEED TO GET THROUGH CLASSES. IS THERE AN EASY WAY TO KNOW WHEN THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN, AND AN EASY WAY TO DIAGNOSE AND REPAIR, WITHOUT SHUTTING DOWN THE ENTIRE FILTRATION SYSTEM? DOES USING LARGER TUBING HELP?
Welcome back to our “Ask the Expert” feature, designed to assist you with issues related to swimming pool water, mechanical equipment, space conditioning, and code compliance. Ask a question, and we will try to answer to the best of our ability.
Yes, clogged lines and service disruptions can be very detrimental to a swim school operation, sometimes even causing health department warnings or even lesson cancellations. The feeders themselves are normally not at fault, though. We have been providing and servicing Stenner feeders since the mid-1980s and they are the best in the industry according to many. The clogging, which normally occurs in the standard (1/4”) bleach line, has more to do with calcification (or crystallization) of the tubing runs. Contrary to what one might think, optional larger (3/8”) tubing does not resolve the clogging issue, and the 3/8” tubing adaptors are known to cause some additional issues and are not recommended by many.
One of the best strategies is to streamline the diagnostics and servicing of the feeders to avoid major interruptions, and there are a couple of quick tips to help you accomplish this in short order.
First, how do you know you have an issue? The best way is to receive an automatic text or email alert any time the chemical readings are lagging behind your target levels. You can refer to the streamlined steps below to resolve. If your treatment system doesn’t have that alert feature, then ask around… it is simple and relatively inexpensive to implement and maintain.
Without that feature you’ll need to be more diligent in your pool water testing, optimally testing every two hours, per Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) suggestions. You’ll also need to pay closer attention to the readings for signs of treatment lag. Once you notice you have an issue, you’ll need to take action.
Regardless of your system, when an issue is apparent, you should stand in front of your Stenner chlorine or acid feeder and determine:
• Is it pumping any fluids?
• If not, is it a feeder issue, or is the line clogged?
• Do you need to take down the entire filtration system to fix, or can you simplify the process in any way? Good News! The addition of two small items can make feeder troubleshooting and maintenance a breeze.
It is a simple, easy to install device that works great and really should be a part of every Stenner installation. It does not come with the base package, so you have to request it to be installed. This wallmounted “bouncing ball” indicator will quickly show if there is fluid moving in the line when the pump is turning. If the ball is bouncing - fluid is moving; if NOT, you’ve got work to do. (it also serves as a one-way flow device) helping prevent pool water filling the vat. The AK600 is simple to use and simple to install. How simple? You just mount the black bracket to a surface nearby the feeder, snap the flow indicator into the bracket, then connect the tubing from the PRESSURE side of the feeder (furthest away from the wall) to the bottom of the indicator, and reconnect the line going to the pool piping to the top of the indicator. You just need to finger tighten the connection. Do not use Teflon tape please. Voila, all installed.
ITEM #2: INJECTION POINT ISOLATION VALVE
This simple valve installs in your main piping return line and connects to your chemical injection line. This is important as it lets you service your chemical feeder lines WITHOUT turning off your pump and filtration (and heater) system. So, in case of a clog, you merely close the valve, (using PPE protection) pull out the tubing, check for clogging, cut off any clogged sections, then reconnect and open the valve. Problem solved, and you don’t get wet or mess around with the pump, filter, and heater.
So, using these two simple additions to your chemical feed system, your feeder maintenance is greatly simplified. In case of a slowed or clogged feeder line, you will merely:
Step 1: Get your PPE safety gear on. Glasses and other required safety gear are a must.
Step 2: Is the chemical controller feed light on? If so, the respective feeder tube assembly should be turning. If not, check the feeder on-off switch, or you could have blown a fuse in the controller.
Step 3: If the feeder is turning, check that the flow indicator “ball” is bouncing up and down. If so, you are moving fluid and you will want to verify the chemical solution strength in the vat. If NOT, your line is clogged, or you have a suction leak.
Step 4: To determine if the line is clogged, close the injection point isolation valve, and pull out the line. Open the valve carefully to see if pool water comes back out. If not, the injection point itself is clogged, and can be cleaned with a Phillips screwdriver or with some diluted acid mixture.
Step 5: If pool water comes out of the valve, then the tubing itself is probably clogged. You need to trim the clogged end, reattach, and voila… you’re back in action.
Please let us know if you can’t find information on these time saving devices, and we will try to assist in any way possible.

Regards, Alvaro G. MendozaIn recent times, the safety and security landscape across the world has become increasingly complex and unpredictable. From natural disasters to unforeseen emergencies and even acts of violence, the need for robust safety measures has never been more pressing. Child activity centers, including swim schools, must recognize the evolving nature of these threats and take proactive steps to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their young participants, staff, and families.
Gone are the days when a brief mention of evacuation procedures sufficed as a safety protocol. In today’s reality, we must acknowledge that potential risks are not confined to mere possibilities but are stark realities that demand our attention. As guardians of young lives entrusted to our care, we owe it to them and their families to prioritize safety and security above all else.
It’s not enough to assume that emergencies “might not happen” or to adopt a laissez-faire attitude towards safety planning. Instead, child activity centers must adopt a proactive approach, diligently crafting comprehensive plans, policies, procedures, and training protocols to address a wide range of potential threats.
Evacuation procedures, for instance, should be meticulously developed and regularly practiced to ensure swift and efficient responses in the event of an emergency. From identifying evacuation routes to designating assembly points and accounting for all individuals, every detail must be thoughtfully considered and meticulously executed.
Moreover, it’s imperative to recognize that safety extends beyond physical threats to include the management of interpersonal conflicts and potential confrontations. Disgruntled parents or guardians, for instance, can present challenges that require tactful handling and de-escalation techniques. Staff members should be trained in effective communication strategies and conflict resolution skills to navigate such situations with professionalism and empathy.
Child activity centers must also leverage technology and innovation to enhance safety and security measures. From surveillance systems and access control mechanisms to digital communication platforms for rapid dissemination of information, embracing technology can significantly bolster the overall safety infrastructure of these facilities.
Above all, fostering a culture of safety and vigilance is paramount. Every staff member, from instructors to administrative personnel, should be empowered and encouraged to prioritize safety in all aspects of their work. Regular training sessions, drills, and ongoing education initiatives can help reinforce this culture and ensure that safety remains at the forefront of every operation.
In conclusion, the current climate of our world demands unwavering commitment and diligence when it comes to safety and security in child activity centers like swim schools. By acknowledging the realities of today’s threats and taking proactive steps to address them, we can create environments that are not only conducive to learning and growth but also safe havens where children can thrive without fear or apprehension. Let us not wait for emergencies to happen; let us act now to safeguard the futures of those in our care.

Provide an example of how a relationship you have built through your USSSA membership has had a positive impact on you personally or professionally.
Over the last 20 years of being a member of the USSSA I have built so many wonderful relationships.
In the beginning I did not own a swim school, I worked at a health club running their lesson program and attended conferences as a non-member. While working at the health club, I attended the Spring Conference in San Antonio in March 2007. I didn’t know too many people at that time but was determined to meet people and learn as much as I could. Little did I know how much that conference would change everything!
One night at conference some people were going to an Irish pub so I joined them and ended up talking with John Kolbisen. I was so impressed with how much everyone at dinner knew about the swim school business. John asked me why I did not own my own swim school. That was never a thought in my head at that time. I was happy where I worked and got take my kids to work with me. Interestingly enough, a few days after conference I was having a conversation with Rob Jacobsen and he had received a call from someone wanting to sell their swim school. Rob and I decided to purchase it together, and we just celebrated our 17th Anniversary as swim school owners!!!
The relationships I have built over these 20 years are incredible. I know at any time I can call on quite a few people to answer any questions I might have for any business question ranging from human resources to finances to opening a new location. Posting a question on the Facebook group is also so helpful to build relationships and have questions answered.
BUFFY FOLISE CHICAGO SWIM SCHOOLSO OFTEN I HEAR “DON’T MAKE IT PERSONAL”... MY “PROFESSIONAL” TURNED INTO MY PERSONAL AND MY PERSONAL TURNED INTO MY PROFESSIONAL…
I started my membership in 2004 and hit the ground running. At the time, that membership fee was a stretch but I knew “membership” was the right choice. My first conference was in Arizona. I sat through every session, glued to every word every speaker shared. My goal was to learn as much as I could from every member of the association. I went to all the sessions, I talked to people at breakfast, lunch, dinner, after hour socials in the lounges…I talked and asked questions and immersed myself in our association. I was invited to visit several swim schools (Emler and Hubbard and La Petite Baleen - thank you!!!). After 4 years of asking questions, visiting some of the best swim schools and watching a friend (Mary Reilly-Magee) build her first swim school, I was ready to build my own swim school in 2008. Although I felt like I asked all the right questions, I still made mistakes - ha, didn’t we all make mistakes!! Some of my best friends have developed through my involvement in the association. They say you are a reflection of the 5 people you surround yourself with…I am proud, at any given moment, that the 5 people I surround myself with are generally (I do have friends outside this community) from the association who are passionate, smart, fun, generous, kind, and want the world to be a better place because they made a difference. I was married to a wonderful man in 2011. I was surrounded by people in our association at that beautiful ceremony and I cherish the strong and meaningful relationships formed over the years. Just like a marriage…in good times and in bad times…I can count on my USSSA family to lift me, support me and teach me.
ROSE CHOLEWINSKI SWIMAMERICA – DAVISWhile I came to my first conference in 1995 strictly to learn about the business of running a swim school. I never expected to come away with forging many friendships that have spanned over 29 years and I will grow from for many years to come. I did not expect to connect with people which turned into building a network of like minded, caring and passionate friends that have encouraged me and given me the strength and confidence to change my career completely and continue to build my business into a Multi-venue children’s activity center.
I found that unlike in my past career, being a member of this association is different from being a part of a typical organization. Being a member has brought with it the serendipity of lifelong friendship with people that I can reach out to anytime, anywhere and literally from around the world to collaborate on virtually any subject whether it is professional or personal. If one person doesn’t have the answer, this network is so well bonded that they can find someone who has gone before me, has experience and is always willing to share their experience just to help me. And I have learned to do the same for others. This is rare and a great gift inside and outside a business. Being a member has brought friends in my path that have taught me what true generosity looks like, how to be impactful, and how to be unapologetic about my passion, intensity and commitment to the mission of saving lives through swimming lessons and now keeping children moving in the gym too.
You know they say: “ if you have one handful of true authentic friends in your life, then count yourself lucky”. Well, I don’t believe in luck, however I do believe that you can be at the right place at the right time along with being prepared and that brings true bountiful and enriching friendships. That is exactly what the USSSA has provided. Moreover, the relationships I have been able to cultivate through USSSA membership continue to support me in various aspects of my life and have no doubt contributed to my growth and success both personally and professionally.

DOLFUN SWIM ACADEMY
I JOINED THE UNITED STATES SWIM SCHOOL ASSOCIATION ONE YEAR OUT OF COLLEGE WHEN MY PARENTS, BOB AND KATHY HUBBARD, OPENED HUBBARD FAMILY SWIM SCHOOL. THAT WAS 25 YEARS AGO!
When I joined, everything and everyone was new to me. I felt inspired and overwhelmed. I struggle putting into words how incredible my relationships through the USSSA membership have impacted me and my entire family. My husband Pat, who also works in the business, and I have witnessed, admired and learned from amazing married working couples, our children have been entertained and befriended by members, and in addition to seeing our USSSA friends twice a year at conferences, we have also traveled on family vacations enjoying time together.
The support, guidance, mentoring, sharing of information, and common drive has bonded us. The trips, phone calls, virtual meetings, challenges of life and business have cemented our relationships, making my Swim School friends an inner part of our family circle.
We feel extremely fortunate and blessed to be a part of this incredible Association.
ANN MARIE SUNDERHAUS HUBBARD FAMILY SWIM SCHOOLI HAVE HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF BECOMING INVOLVED WITH THE USSSA, BOTH PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY.
When I initially entered the industry without prior experience in swim schools, I grappled with my first encounter of imposter syndrome. I wondered about the reception from long-time members, whether they would be open to addressing my questions, and if I could truly acclimate and find my place among them.
However, my journey with the USSSA unfolded in unexpected ways. Not only did it profoundly impact my life and career, but it also redefined my understanding of what a professional association truly is. I discovered that this community not only prioritizes supporting swimmers but also fosters camaraderie, encouragement, and meaningful connections among its members.
I was warmly embraced and actively encouraged to engage, share my insights, and even pursue leadership roles such as serving on the board of directors. Professionally, my involvement garnered respect and recognition from our British Swim School Franchise owners and the communities we serve, instilling confidence that we are collaborating with the finest in the field.
On a personal level, my involvement with USSSA has been transformative. It has bolstered my confidence, dispelling the imposter syndrome I once felt. I continuously find myself learning, evolving, and channeling my passion towards assisting others. Overall, this experience has not only enhanced my professional relationships and obligations but has also enriched my interactions with family and friends, making me a better-rounded individual.

Through heartfelt connections, engaging conversations, insightful conferences, sharing sessions, facility tours, and countless travel experiences, I’ve witnessed tremendous growth in my business. These meaningful interactions have not only fueled my professional endeavors but have also contributed to my personal development in profound ways.
The friendships and bonds forged through USSSA are immeasurable. Knowing that in times of need, there’s a vast network of individuals ready to extend their support and expertise is truly priceless. The most profound learning experiences stem from genuine interactions with others. The best learning is the interactions you have with people and the USSSA has always been committed to building and strengthening relationships.
DAVINA LOPEZDAVINA’S SWIM HOUSE
The USSSA is the third trade association I have worked with in my 25 year career in association management.
While I find that each association fosters relationships among its members, this association in particular takes relationships to new heights. I’ve learned of members that have built lifelong friendships that include traveling and taking vacations together. I’ve watched as members navigate a personal tragedy or illness being lifted up by fellow members during their time of great need through regular outreach and support. This association can truly give back so much more than what you put into it. It has changed my perspective on the value associations can bring to their communities, especially in an ever changing and evolving world that relies so heavily on technology advancements. I feel that these personal connections, bringing passionate people together to share and inspire one another, is what sets this association apart. We will be great leaders through the continued development of industry standards, launching industry leading certifications, and being legislative trailblazers, but we will do it with heart and a connection to the great people that make up this industry.
