LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP

Dear Valued USSFCU Members, e are halfway into 2022 and so much has happened with USSFCU this year. We started by donating $30,000 to food banks in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia (the DMV). We have a longstanding commitment to helping curb food insecurities in the DMV area and this need has grown dramatically due to the economic fallout of the pandemic.

Additionally, when tornadoes ripped through Kentucky and the surrounding states, we again felt a need to act. We donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross (Southern and Midwest) to support the tornado relief efforts in the affected states. Heading into 2022, we had ambitious goals to roll out significant changes. Some of these are changes you, our members, have been asking for and others are things we know our members will love. In March of this year, we made a significant upgrade to the way our members apply for loans and cards, add shares and open new accounts with our new application portal. The new portal provides a more simplified, streamlined and robust platform that was designed for mobile devices, making it easier than ever to apply on the go. This “mobile-first” approach to the user experience also makes a cleaner and much easier to use desktop and laptop encounter.

Earlier in the year, we piloted our new Interactive Teller Machines (ITMs), with the first one installed at our Bowman Branch in Alexandria. The new ITMs connect members with a live remote teller for those situations when you need to speak to someone on the go. ATMs by their very nature are designed for quick, easy transactions and ITMs are no different. ITMs give members the bonus to do any transaction they would normally do with a teller at a branch, just on the go at one of our ITMs. We hope to roll out more ITMs in the DMV area—especially for members who are not close to the USSFCU branches.

By far our biggest project this year has been the all-new myUSSFCU Online and Mobile Banking platforms rolling out in June. These new platforms are designed to provide a seamless experience between your mobile and desktop devices. Everything you can do on your desktop, you will be able to do on the app and vice versa. There will also be new features and functionalities that our current platform doesn’t offer. One of the biggest changes and upgrades to our security process will be one of the first things all members experience when logging in. You will no longer need to remember security questions for logging in as we are implementing a twofactor authentication process at log-in. This new layer of security is a more multifaceted and unique way of logging in and something you have been asking for. Overall, the user experience, customizability and versatility of the new Online and Mobile Banking platforms will revolutionize the way you manage your accounts. We cannot wait for the launch in June and will be sending out communications to ensure a smooth transition from the current platform to the new ones.

We are also humbled by the number of recognitions and awards we have received this year so far. We were named a “Best of Bauer” financial institution by the independent industry assessor BauerFinancial for 106 consecutive quarters with five-star ratings. That is every quarter since 1995. Our members are our inspiration and motivation to maintain this high level of financial stability, security and service.

USSFCU also received a VMware ACE Award for technical achievements through digital innovation. Our IT team has managed extraordinary challenges during this COVID-19/remote work environment and transitioned to a new facility all while mitigating threats and maintaining the overall security of USSFCU. Our mortgage team had a record year in 2021 and last month was awarded the Credit Union Mortgage Association’s (CUMA’s) Double Titanium Award for outstanding performance in loan production. We couldn’t have accomplished this without the trust and loyalty of our amazing members, proving that “Better Together” is more than words; they are a way of life.

Other big changes we rolled out so far this year included a more simplified way to get pre-approved for certain loans and credit cards, plus loan decisions after regular business hours—so you don’t have to wait for the following business day to know if you have been approved or to learn about a change in the status of your loan application(s). We expanded our capabilities with international wires and we still have several other upgrades, changes and new products rolling out throughout 2022. Stay plugged in to make sure you don’t miss things like expanded services after hours, additional extras inside Online and Mobile Banking as well as our brand-new contactless cards.

Our members are priority number one and giving you the best possible tools and resources to manage your finances, plan your life and invest will always be at the top of our list. Earlier this year, we introduced a major upgrade to our online application portal.

Now, we are about to change the way you bank online and on your phone. We are excited to announce myUSSFCU Online Banking—USSFCU’s all-new Online & Mobile Banking platform, COMING JUNE 2022!

Below are some key features and things you need to know about the all-new platforms.

Yes. We will share video snippets that walk you through some of the basic functions.

Will my current browser work?

Short Answer...Yes. However, if you are using Safari, especially on a Mac, you may need to go through the steps to disable the cookie detection.

Will I keep my same login information?

Yes. You will use the same username and password.

4.

How do I log in?

Via the USSFCU website. You will still be able to go to ussfcu.org and access the log-in screen for Online Banking when it goes live.

5.

What is two-factor authentication (2FA) and what will it entail?

It will greatly simplify logging in to your account. Once you input your username and password, you will receive a text with a code. You will input the code in the second step of the log-in process allowing you to access the platforms/your account(s). ussfcu.org | 5

No more need for a personal watermark (you will be able to upload a profile picture under your profile—but it will not be used for security.)

Will I have to do two-factor authentication (2FA) every time?

It’s up to you. Once you establish two-factor authentication on your personal device, you have the option to select “Don’t ask for codes again.” After that, you should be able to access your account on that device with only your username and password.

SECURITY NOTES: Only select “Don’t ask for codes again” on your own devices, never on someone else’s or on one that can be shared. Never access your account from a public device. Never connect to Online/Mobile Banking using an unsecured connection.

Why does USSFCU need an updated phone number?

The biggest reason is 2FA. On initial setup, an additional layer of security is required before you can configure a 2FA method. As part of the enrollment process, you must provide your email and phone number.

Make sure that the phone number and email you provide match what you have listed on your account or you will not be granted access.

What do I do if I have an international number or one that can’t receive texts?

Authy App. You will have the option to choose another login method, such as the Authy app (presented upon setup). If you opt in to using the Authy app, it does require an annual subscription. The Authy app is completely independent of Online Banking and our Mobile Banking app.

9.

How do I set up Mobile Banking now that it’s changed?

Download the new app. When we go live with the platforms, we will send out detailed instructions on how to download the new app and set it up.

10. Will I keep my same alerts?

No. Unfortunately this currently isn’t a function that transfers over. You will need to set up all new alerts once you access the new platforms. We will address this in more detail, in follow-up communications.

SNEAK PEAK YOUR DASHBOARD The Online Banking Dashboard is the hub where you can see your online banking information at a glance in categorized sections. The screen appears upon first logging in to myUSSFCU Online Banking.

On the dashboard, users can view their account information, access money movement actions, view account activity, view remote deposits and see messages plus alerts.

Personalizing the Dashboard Layout The Online Dashboard is divided into sections that can be added, removed, resized and reorganized to the end user’s liking.

Find any section of the dashboard, and select the ellipses option (***). Choose a situation and follow the corresponding steps. You can resize the section from small to large, change the section’s position by dragging and dropping the sections until the desired order is achieved and hide a section from the dashboard. Lastly, if there is a section not listed, you can add a different or new section to the dashboard. ussfcu.org | 7

Accounts You can view account information by selecting “Accounts” from the main menu on the left-hand side of the screen, or through the Accounts section of the dashboard. From the Accounts section of the dashboard, select an account category if your dashboard is set up to show account categories instead of individual accounts. Select the desired account and choose to view, print, search or download recent transactions in the “Transactions” section.

You can also view important information in the “Details” section, such as account number(s), routing number and more.

Changing the Order of Accounts If you have multiple accounts, you will be able to prioritize some accounts over others on the list. With this feature, you can choose the order in which you want your accounts to appear in the Accounts section of the dashboard and on the Accounts screen. Changes made to your account order in Online Banking are also reflected in the Mobile app, creating a similar experience across both platforms.

KnowledgeBase The myUSSFCU Online and Mobile Banking platforms are dynamic and versatile, providing you with a myriad of ways to manage your accounts. While you have a number of new options and tools a click or tap away, the user interface is simple and easy to use so the experience doesn’t feel overly complex. To take full advantage of everything the new platforms have to offer, our KnowledgeBase is a great start. We will continue to update the info on the site to provide clarity, insights and address as many questions as possible. We will also be sharing information in different media formats as we know everyone has their preferences on how to learn and consume information. We know you will love the new myUSSFCU Online Banking experience and can’t wait to share it with you in June!

The All-New USSFCU Application Portal

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Below are some of the most asked questions we have received. We would like to share the questions and answers in hopes of providing the best experience possible with the new Application Portal.

Q: How can I access the new Application Portal?

A: The Application Portal can be accessed a couple of ways.

• The first way is by clicking on any of the “APPLY” buttons found throughout our website.

• The second way would be for existing members who already have access to Online Banking.

Simply log into your Online Banking account and choose any of the tabs across the top, “Add Shares,” “My Applications” or “Apply for a Loan”.

Q: Where do I go to apply for a Youth Account?

A: For our Youth Accounts, you will need to go to the Youth Account page on our website and click the button to apply.

Q: How long do I have to complete my application?

A: For added security, the Application Portal will time out after 15 minutes of inactivity. A warning message will appear if the application has been left idle and is approaching the maximum time allowed for completion. If the application times out, you will need to begin the process over. It is important to have all your information and documents ready to upload prior to beginning the application.

Q: Can I save my application and finish it later?

A: In our new system, applications can’t be saved and finished later. The application should be fin-

ished within the current session, or you may exit the application and start over the next time you are ready to submit. This is another security benefit.

Q: I am having trouble with importing my license scan, what should I do?

A: If you are having trouble with importing your license information you can try the following steps.

• Be sure you are taking a photo of the BACK of the ID. • Adjust the resolution for a clearer picture.

• Make sure your camera and/or Internet browser has the appropriate permissions to scan and import.

• Take a picture separately and upload the image rather than trying to auto-scan.

• Enter your information manually.

Q: What is the file size allowed for uploading my documents?

A: The file size for uploaded documents is 4MB. If the file size is larger than 4MB, the image will need to be reduced in size prior to uploading.

Q: Can new members fund their account with a Debit or Credit Card?

A: Yes, they may fund their new account with either a debit or credit card! The card will not be

charged until the application has been processed and documents have been signed. Please keep in mind if you are using a credit card, these transactions are run as a cash advance; so, finance charges may be assessed to you by the credit card’s financial institution.

Q: How do I know if my application has been approved?

A: Once you have submitted your application, you can simply visit the Application Portal landing page and click “Check My Application Status.” All recent applications will be displayed along with the status of that application.

the “My Applications” tab along the top of your screen and you will be directed to the landing page as well as where you can click on “Check my Application Status.”

Q: I forgot to upload the required documents during my application process, how can I upload those now?

A: By visiting the “Check My Application Status” page, you will be able to upload documents to your

application as well as view and reply to electronic messages you receive regarding your application.

USSFCU MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: — CHANDINI M. BACHMAN — “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” —Mahatma Gandhi

M

y career in public service began in 1970 when I was chosen to represent Arizona to the United States Senate Youth Program (SYP). My participation in the SYP was inspirational and in 1980, after completing my education in design and creativity, I moved to Washington, DC to pursue a career in public service.

In federal service, I worked in the White House (Carter Administration), the Senate and House for Members on both sides of the aisle, as well as the Executive Office of the President of the Office of Management and Budget.

Prior to retiring, I worked my last ten years as a certified Interpretive Tour Guide in the U.S. Capitol, also known as a Red Coat. I absolutely loved being a Capitol Tour Guide because it enabled me to 1952 – 2022 combine my creativity and love for teaching into frontline representation of our country with visitors to the Capitol.

In public international organizations, I worked four years for the Washington offices of International Organization for Migration (IOM) and United Nations agencies, the World Food Program (WFP) and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). More recently, I’ve used my experience to initiate or collaborate on projects for Peace, Unity & Cooperation.

“I was interested in public service from an early age, but it was my experience as a Hearst Senate Youth Program Scholar that propelled me forward.

I have been engaged in government and civic initiatives, ever since.”

In 1970, I was chosen to represent Arizona in the United States Senate Youth Program. During the week-long visit to Washington, DC with the SYP, I met the most wonderful students from all over the United States. They were so interesting and special, and I felt that together we could really change the world. This program was so powerful and compelling for me that I have continued to contribute energy and ideas to SYP ever since. The most rewarding aspect has been meeting the younger generations, bright-eyed individuals who also see the promise of their contributions. I have been eager to meet them and have had the privilege of mentoring several, along the way.

U.S. Capitol Visitor Guide | Architect of the Capitol

Certified Interpretive Guide, National Association for Interpretation From 2008 through 2015, prior to retiring, I served as a certified Interpretive Tour Guide in the U.S. Capitol. My mother was a museum docent, and I am cut from that same cloth. It was a joy to share America’s history with Capitol tourists and special tour groups, and I was able to bring my knowledge of public service, history and architecture together, in a wonderful mix.

RETIREMENT I had hoped to travel more in my retirement, but “the pandemic…” I then really embraced Zoom and [was] very active with remote lectures and events, and when possible, attended the occasional political event or civic parade. ussfcu.org | 15

The most satisfying time I spent was on curating a collection of books for Harvard’s Divinity School Library. This also resulted in determining that I have too many books! Is that possible? So, I donated quite a few of the history, biography and political science volumes to the Hill.

Pre-pandemic, I made many trips to the Hill for visits with various friends and offices. I still emailed and exchanged holiday cards with a large group of former colleagues and bosses! And, I would still come to the Hill to do some banking, of course!

CREDIT UNION MEMBER EXPERIENCE I joined the U.S. Senate Federal Credit Union decades ago, when the main branch was still in the Russell Senate Office Building, and they were an important part of my financial life ever since. Their services were convenient and it gave me a sense of pride to bank where I [once] worked. I knew my [financial] affairs were safe, which offers invaluable piece of mind. From the very start, the branch staff has been like family. I especially enjoy Greta [Brown] and her positive, uplifting demeanor. I couldn’t ask for a better credit union.

Advice for young people beginning their career in Congressional service: • Read, a lot! There is no shortcut to being prepared.

• Listen carefully to the people you meet. Keep in touch and help them as they may need it. The contacts I met over the years were invaluable to providing service to the constituents I helped to serve.

• Send paper thank you notes.

They are rare, now, and appreciated.

SEG SPOTLIGHT As one of the U.S. Capitol’s oldest and largest credit unions, we have the distinct privilege of serving some of the most eminent agencies within the Congressional community. Standing out among these groups are the prominent officers of the U.S. Capitol Police force. At USSFCU, we are proud to service the honorable men and women who work daily to protect our Nation’s Congress, its Members, employees, visitors and facilities.

The United States Capitol Police (USCP) dates back to the early 1800s when Congress moved from Philadelphia to Washington, DC. It was then that a single watchman, John Golding, was hired to protect the Capitol Building. After a number of incidents occurred in 1827 that could have been prevented with sufficient security and surveillance, President John Quincy Adams asked that a regular Capitol Police force be established.

On May 2, 1828, Congress passed an Act that expanded the police regulations of the City of Washington to include the Capitol and Capitol Square. It is on this date that the USCP commemorates its founding. With the passage of this Act, Congress brought the responsibility of policing the Capitol under the direction of the presiding officer of the House and Senate and empowered the Capitol watchmen with full law enforcement authorities. The new force consisted of a captain and three men who worked fifteen-hour shifts when Congress was in session and ten-hour shifts at all other times. Their area of authority did not exceed the neighboring walks and streets adjacent to the Capitol Building.

In 1867, the responsibility of the Capitol Police was transferred from the Commissioner of Public Buildings to the Sergeants at Arms for the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. In 1873, the Capitol Police Board was established, and the Architect of the Capitol was added to the Board.

By 1935, the Capitol Grounds footprint was expanded to 126 acres. As a result, the head of the Department requested additional officers to augment the 132-man force, which consisted of men ranging from 19 to 75 years old. The Captain of Police also asked to adopt the same standards held by the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia (MPD), and Congress authorized the Capitol Police Board to establish specific qualification requirements. The Act of July 31, 1946, recodified the earlier authorities and responsibilities of the Department into one Act and formed the fundamental basis for the statutory authorities and responsibilities of the Department and Capitol Police Board to such an extent that subsequent authorities generally have been conferred as amendments to this Act. In 1974, the Department’s first female Capitol Police officers were hired, thereby providing new opportunities for women wanting law enforcement careers. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter signed Public Law No. 96152, establishing a chief of police for the United States Capitol Police. The role had previously been held by MPD Captains and Assistant Chiefs in an ex-officio capacity. Public Law No. 96152 was the catalyst for the Department’s transition into the modern era.

The USCP expanded its force after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and again following the historic merger with the Library of Congress Police in 2009.

Today, the Department has an authorized sworn strength of more than 2,000. In addition to the sworn members of the force, the Department has over 350 civilian personnel who provide operational and administrative support. The USCP’s diverse workforce is comprised of employees from nearly all 50 states and the US territories.

The USCP embodies the best in American policing and serves as a model in security, urban crime prevention, dignitary protection, specialty response capabilities and homeland security. They proudly protect the legislative process, the symbol of our democracy, the people who carry out the process and the millions of visitors who travel here to see democracy in action each day.

Credit Unions + Small Businesses = A Perfect Partnership

C

redit unions are not-for-profit, community-based, member-owned financial institutions that are uniquely positioned to help America’s small businesses. They return yearly profits to their members in the form of lower interest rates on loans, lower fees on accounts and better interest on savings accounts—including business accounts and loans. They also offer smaller business loan amounts, which can be a huge advantage for entrepreneurs who are just starting out.

Beyond these dollars and cents advantages, credit unions are operated on the principle of “People Helping People.” What this means for small businesses is a more personal, local approach to loan approval—often a big hurdle for the new small business. The approval process is more likely to include the credit union’s own interactions with the applicant than a big bank’s universal application process.

A credit union is also more likely to understand a community’s need for and potential success of a small business, as they themselves have deep roots in the community. Credit unions are all about keeping local dollars in the local economy. This was never more evident than during the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a January 2021 report by Callahan & Associates, credit unions acted swiftly to help members manage the financial impacts of COVID-19 with loan deferrals, stopped or slowed repossessions, increased credit card limits, Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans, waived fees on ATM withdrawals, early CD withdrawals plus ramped-up donations, support and fundraising for local communities.
