Letter from Leadership Dear Valued USSFCU Members, This past year can best be summed up as a year of transition and change. Some of us have new jobs, new places we call home, or have entered into a new phase of life. Some of these changes we embraced, and others we had no choice but to embrace. This was specifically a year of transition and change for USSFCU as we moved into our new headquarters building in the Braddock Road Metro neighborhood of Old Town Alexandria. This newsletter takes a deep dive into our new headquarters building and branch with an introduction to your dedicated Bowman Branch team.

While we reflect on 2021 and look forward to a new year, it is so very important to take the time to be thankful and grateful for the blessings in our lives. That is why we would like to express just how thankful we are for our incredible members. While we have been through a lot in the past two years, it was always reassuring to know we were all there for each other. The Credit Union is also incredibly grateful for our employees who have weathered the ups and downs of the pandemic to show up to work and serve our members with pride.

Throughout the year, it felt like we were getting our footing and could finally put the pandemic in the rearview mirror, and other times it felt like we were back to square one. One thing is certain, and that is we will continue to support our members no matter what the circumstances. To that point, we rolled out some great new tools for our members in 2021. Products like MyCardRules allow members to manage their cards all from an app or Senate Payment Reset that gives members the option to lower their auto payment without needing to refinance. We also revamped and improved our Student Loan offerings to give members a more flexible way to pay for school or refinance. One of our more exciting technological innovations is our new ITMs with live virtual tellers. Imagine walking up to an ATM, tapping a button, and immediately be connected to a live person to assist with your transaction. This is exactly the experience with our new ITMs, and you can experience it by visiting our brand-new Bowman Branch in Alexandria, Virginia. Our beautiful, state-of-the-art Bowman Branch is another exciting offering for our members that opened its doors in October of 2021.

2022 proves to be even more exciting with the rollout of our new application portal, online banking platform, and mobile app. These much-anticipated upgrades are enhancements our members have been asking for, and we couldn’t be happier to announce their arrival. We have additional new products and services headed your way in 2022, so be on the lookout throughout the year.

Investing in new technology, products, and services is one of the ways we give back to our members, in addition to great rates on loans and savings products. However, we know there is nothing quite like money in your pocket. That is why before the end of 2021, we will be depositing dividends into qualifying members’ accounts totaling over $1.7 million! 2021 has been a very good year for USSFCU, and we are passing that success directly on to our members. People helping people is more than a slogan; it is our guiding principle. We wish you all the very best this holiday season and a very Happy New Year from your USSFCU family.

Alexandria, VA —The

United States Senate Federal Credit Union (USSFCU), one of Virginia’s largest credit unions, has officially opened its brand-new Braddock Station retail branch and corporate headquarters. On Wednesday, September 22, 2021, USSFCU held a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of the new building and honoring Capitol Hill icon plus the building’s namesake, Bertie H. Bowman.

Founded in 1935 and originally headquartered in the basement of the Russell Senate Office Building, USSFCU saw dramatic growth

beginning in the ‘80s. The Credit Union made its first move in 1983 to the newly constructed Hart Senate Office Building. Continued growth in the ‘90s demanded another move, and this time it was to a standalone facility located in Alexandria, VA. After almost 30 years, another move was needed and in 2018, 1310 Braddock Place, in the heart of Downtown Alexandria’s Braddock Metro neighborhood, was selected as USSFCU’s new home. While selecting the building itself was a long and deliberative process, selecting a name for the building was an easy decision.

ertie H. Bowman is the longestserving staffer in U.S. Senate history with over 65 years of service on Capitol Hill. Bowman is also USSFCU’s longest-serving Board Member, serving 46 years, including two terms as Chairman.

full service representatives are available to service the needs of USSFCU’s members. Included in the Credit Union’s new technology is the Interactive Teller Machine (ITM), which allows members to make deposits and conduct real-time banking affairs virtually with a live remote teller.

Mr. Bowman’s service to the Credit Union began in 1966 as a member of the Credit Committee. Joining the Board of Directors in 1975, Mr. Bowman’s longevity of service to the institution far surpasses any other person within the organization to-date.

Mr. Bowman is also the longest-serving staffer in U.S. Senate history with over 65 years of service on Capitol Hill. USSFCU gained nationwide attention in 2019 when announcing their new headquarters building would be dedicated in honor of the legendary Capitol Hill icon. A building ceremony held in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Room at the Dirksen Senate Office Building served as a very fitting setting that paid homage to the decades of service Mr. Bowman provided to the Foreign Relations Committee.

Mr. Bowman, standing alongside his colleagues, Senators and other USSFCU Board Members, expressed his great thanks to everyone involved with the Credit Union’s new headquarters and how honored he was to have the building named after him. He also mentioned his long and storied journey from a small town in South Carolina to sweeping the steps of the Capitol and working his way up to becoming the Hearing Coordinator for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

She is responsible for day-to-day branch operations and profitability while functioning as a Business Development Officer to foster relationships with Select Employee Groups.

Year-End Tax Planning TIPS

F

ew words can dampen the cheer and optimism of a New Year like “taxes.” Let’s face it, the time for holidays, time off and family should be celebratory, not burdensome. But if you approach taxes with a keen eye toward reducing your liability for next year, the concept becomes more amenable. And, indeed, there are numerous tax-savings strategies that you can implement that could potentially reduce your tax obligations. Let’s take a look.

TURN LOSSES INTO GAINS

If you anticipate that your investments will yield short- or long-term capital gains, you can offset these with realized capital losses, according to the IRS.

For assets that you hold less than a year, the gains (shortterm) are taxed at ordinary rates from 10% to 37%, which you can offset with short-term losses. Similarly, for assets that you hold longer than a year (long-term), the gains are taxed at a top rate of 20%, which you can reduce by long-term capital losses.1 If your losses exceed your gains, you can deduct up to $3,000 in capital losses against your ordinary income on that year’s tax return, while carrying forward unused losses, if any, to future years.

Accordingly, you might consider avoiding short-term gains, since these are taxed at higher rates. If you are anticipating a short-term gain, either offset them with short-term losses, or else consider holding onto the assets for at least a year, when they become long-term assets.

Review your portfolio and estimate your gains and losses. Most capital gains and losses are triggered when you sell the asset, offering you control over the event. However, others—mutual funds, for instance—are difficult to predict as they are comprised of numerous assets. Assess those assets that have performed well and those that have incurred losses. If there are under-performers that can cover your gains, it will help minimize your capital gains tax.

Also, it is advantageous to elect losses before gains, as you can carry over unused losses to future years. Capital gains are taxed in the year in which they are realized.

The IRS assesses a 3.8% tax on unearned income for high-income taxpayers, which applies to single taxpayers with a modified adjusted gross income of $200,000 or more and for those who are married and filing jointly with a modified adjusted gross income of $250,000 or more. This increases the top rate on most long-term capital gains to 23.8%, which applies to interest, dividends, royalties and rents, among other items (collectively called “net investment income”).

AVOID THE NET INVESTMENT INCOME TAX

Assets that do not fall under this net investment income classification and thereby avoid the 3.8% additional tax include distributions from IRAs or qualified retirement plans, annuity payouts and income from tax-exempt municipal bonds. Consider these distinctions to avoid additional tax liability.

Because no matter what size your portfolio is, factors such as over- or under-weighting in various asset classes, less-than-optimum investment vehicles in taxable versus tax-deferred accounts, portfolio overlap and other considerations can seriously impact your returns and influence the amount of risk you may be unknowingly assuming.

Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run $180,059 donated to Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals The 48th running of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run took place Sunday, September 12, on the Washington Monument Grounds, Washington, DC. While the iconic race was missing the cherry blossoms this year, participants enjoyed this special “Runners Delight of Fall” while coming together in support of CMN Hospitals during this critical time. $25,462 of the total donated to Children’s Hospitals was raised by runners, their families and friends.

The Capitol Hill Competition The race within the run was founded nearly 20 years ago as a spirit-

ed race between the staff offices, agencies and committees serving the House and Senate. Runners compete for the coveted Capitol Hill/Congressional Cup. The cup gets presented to the single fastest overall team representing a Representative’s or Senator’s office.

The Congressional Baseball Game 16,000 at the ballpark and over $1.2 million raised for charity

Republicans and Democrats squared off at the 2021 Congressional Baseball Game for Charity at Nationals Park,Washington, DC. Since 1909, the Congressional Baseball Game has been an annual bipartisan event beloved by all and enjoyed by thousands. Floor and on the field. Members usually sport the uniform of their home states and districts and although proportional representation is never required, elected officials of many states play to win every year.

This year, the Republicans won the game, 13 to 12.

Held on September 29, this year’s game raised $1.2 million for worthy and effective Washington, DC-area charities, including The Washington Literacy Center, The Boys and Girls Club, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and the United States Capitol Police Memorial Fund. This year’s game also received surprise appearances from President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The Congressional Football Game NFL Legends, Congress and the Capitol Police support the families of fallen officers Members of Congress and former NFL players faced off against the United States Capitol Police for the 12th Annual Congressional Football Game for Charity.

Established in 2004 to benefit the Capitol Police Memorial Fund, the game features the Mean Machine, a bipartisan team of lawmakers and former NFL stars, versus the Guards, made up of Capitol Police Officers.

The game is a family-friendly event that includes entertainment and spirited competition on the field while bringing together the Congressional and law enforcement communities in support of worthy causes.

Held in years past at Gallaudet University and the DC Armory, the game was played this year on November 3, under Audi Field’s bright lights before a crowd topping 2,000. The event raised more than $600,000 this year. For the eleventh time in 12 games, the Guards prevailed over the Mean Machine, this time by a final score of 26 to 6.

International Credit Union Day Celebrating the spirit of the global credit union movement USSFCU joined more than 86,000 credit unions from 118 countries in recognition of the 73rd annual International Credit Union (ICU) Day®. The day is an opportunity to reflect upon the credit union movement’s history, promote its achievements, recognize hard work and share member experiences.
