In their messages, Dr. Emmanuel James P. Pattaguan, VP for Academics, and Sr. Marie Rosanne Malillin, SVC, SPUS President, emphasized the significance of the benchmarking activity.

“Our concept of inclusivity is always of paramount value. Schools should not compete with each other, but schools should share the best that they can offer,” remarked Dr. Pattaguan.

“There’s no room for competition

among educators. You know, when we do that, we do a disservice to the youth we serve, to the community, to the nation, to the world, and to the church. There’s so much to gain by sharing,” shared Sr. Malillin.

USL welcomed the SPUS delegation, which was led by Sr. Marie Rosanne Malillin, SVC, SPUS President, together with Sr. Mary Rosella Faypon, SVC, Vice President for Christian Formation; Sr. Emelita S. Alvarez, SVC, Basic Education Principal; Sr. Sahlee Palijo, Dean, College of Health Sciences; Melvin M. Ninal, Ph.D., VP for Academic Services; Guilbert R. Mantala, MA-Rel.Ed., VP for Student Services; and other SPUS officials and educators.

They were warmly welcomed by the USL administration, led by Dr. Luisa B. Aquino, Executive Assistant to the President; Dr. Emmanuel James P. Pattaguan, VP for Academics; Dr. Rina M. BSTM, BSHM students get hands-on training in cruise industry

Fourth-year BSTM and BSHM students gained practical exposure to the cruise industry in an immersive experience through the shipboard training program of the university under the School of Accountancy, Business, and Hospitality.

Aboard the 2GO Maligaya cruise ship from March 22-29, 2023, the voyage took the students from Manila to Cebu to Cagayan De Oro and back, where they were exposed to various aspects of shipboard operations, including safety procedures, customer service, basic shipboard maintenance, food and beverage services, housekeeping, and other hospitality services. Students were also encouraged to engage with the crew and ask questions to gain a better understanding of the industry’s various roles, enriching their practical knowledge.

The conceptualization of the training was organized by Mrs. Ma. Sherelyn S. Tama, HTM Program Chair, and Mrs. Alicia S. Tuliao, Academic Dean, and was successfully conducted through USL’s industry partner, Negrense Marine Integrated Services Inc. Ensuring the

program’s success, the program had two faculty chaperones, Mr. Jean Aidan Pierre P. Tolentino and Mr. Hans C. Casauay, both HTM instructors.

The shipboard training program received excellent feedback from both the students and the organizers. The students expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to gain valuable experience in a shipboard setting and expressed their excitement to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills in their future careers. The organizers and trainers were also commended for their efforts in providing an excellent training experience.

The resounding success of the program is a testament to USL’s commitment to providing its students with exceptional learning experiences. The university looks forward to organizing more programs in the future that will offer hands-on experience and real-world knowledge.

With such exciting and rewarding opportunities, USL is confident that the future of the industry is looking bright and is proud to be a part of shaping it. USLWB

In an interview, Mr. Francisco mentioned that during their meeting and action planning, Fuga Island was identified as the area of the community outreach program for the year 2023. He added that they solicited and requested assistance from generous donors for school supplies, grocery items, and other necessities for the citizens of Fuga Island.

Fr. Maniwang, in his homily, stressed that the Student Pupil Government (SPG) should involve themselves more in this

kind of activity in order to get a glimpse of life outside of their comfort zones.

“I admire the kids and parents who live there because I haven’t heard complaints as to when the items will be distributed; rather, they patiently waited until it was time. The residents of Fuga Island are lucky to have us sponsor a mass considering its geographical location; only twice a year a mass is celebrated there,” Fr. Maniwang stated.

A total of 150 indigent pupils from the Fuga Island Integrated Elementary School and 150 indigent families from Sitio Naguilian were the beneficiaries of the outreach program.

CAPABLE Louisians and their parents/ guardians provided the items donated, which included school supplies, slippers, and snacks like biscuits and tetra pack juice.
