USL hosts Crime Prevention Symposium

Students from various schools in Cagayan province gathered at the University of Saint Louis on September 7, 2022, for the Students Crime Prevention Symposium.

With the theme “Sa New Normal: Sambayanan Magtulungan, Krimen ay Hadlangan Tungo sa Kapayapaan at Kaunlaran,” the symposium sought to enhance the awareness of student leaders of higher education institutions in crime prevention.

In his keynote message, Cagayan Governor Manuel N. Mamba emphasized the relevance of peace and order project initiatives in the province’s economic development.

“The successful implementation of these peace and order projects has paved the way for increasing investor confidence in Cagayan,” he said.

Students were then educated on a variety of crime prevention topics, such as the role of the five pillars of the criminal justice system, preventing cybercrime victimization, school-based recruitment strategies of communist terrorist groups, and the ill effects of prohibited drugs.

Regional Director Manuel Pontanal of NAPOLCOM R2; PLTCOL Rovelita Aglipay of Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit 2; PVT. Ivylyn Corpin, OG2, 5ID, PA; and Agent Rovina Littaua of PDEA-Cagayan shared their knowledge and expertise on the topics as resource lecturers.

According to Mark Joseph Maramag, a Louisian Criminology student, the symposium is timely and relevant in light of the alleged crimes circulating throughout the nation. He remarked that it helped him

in broadening his understanding of crime prevention matters.

Jamaila Dumlao, a Computer Science student at FL Vargas College, also shared the importance of the activity as it served as a reminder of the prohibited and unlawful acts in the country.

The student symposium concluded successfully with the joint effort of the University of Saint Louis, USL Supreme Student Council, USL Criminology Student Service Society, and the National Police Commission Region 2. It was attended by students from USL, UCV, FL Vargas College, MCNP-ISAP, Lyceum of Aparri, CSU-Lallo, Maila Rosario College, and Peñablanca

National High School (online).

Gracing the event were also Fr. Renillo H. Sta Ana, CICM, University President; Dr. Emmanuel James Pattaguan, USL Vice President for Academics; PCOL Julio Gorospe Jr., OIC Provincial Director of Cagayan PPO; RD Rey Addatu, Assistant Regional Director of National Intelligence Coordinating Agency; and Atty. Louisian arkis land 2nd place, finalists in WAD ‘22

USL’s Power Trio! USL’s three BS Architecture students once again proved their expertise in the visual arts as Jenric Shane Q. De la Cruz bagged 2nd place, and Jerico A. Turo and James S. Perlas were finalists in the Poster Making Contest during the 25th Anniversary of UAP Fort Bonifacio Chapter.

The event was in consonance with the celebration of World Architecture Day 2022 with the theme “Pilak” and was held at UAP National Headquarters, Quezon City, on October 8, 2022.

It should be remembered that Mr. De la Cruz was declared 1st Place in WAD 2020 and WAD 2021 poster-making competitions, while Turo and Perlas were champions and runners-up in Region-wide poster-making contests.

In an interview with De la Cruz, he said that the poster was made on the spot.

“All the elements and concepts came rushing out of my mind and onto the paper. I have never felt this pressure for a very long time - a drawing contest, face-to-face after the heights of the pandemic,” Dela Cruz admitted.

Participants of the WAD 2022 competed with the theme of ideals of architecture and what they can do for the future of the environment.

Even though the concept was somewhat similar to 2019’s WAD theme, Dela Cruz still showed them a new style.

“I knew how many contests would want to see something different in art styles, so I laid off with my vector-like posters and gave a shot for realism and abstract, and only a bit of vector art only,” he said.

“We were restricted from using markers of any kind. Actually, watercolor, colored pens, and pencils were new to me when rendered on the watercolor paper provided for our main canvas,” he added.

In his poster, a Corinthian column was used as the base of everything to signify a point in architectural history when life started its development toward

reflecting natural features in its structures.

“I thought of it as a subtle way to show how it transitions to modern biophilic and biomimicry architecture, where sustainability is of top priority,” he said.

He went on to say that the silver man depicts contemporary architects through realism in light of the event’s 25thanniversary theme, “Pilak.”

“I also kept the palette in silver and gold to strike a different approach in a college level poster making, veering away from the traditional color-blasted oil pastel posters,” he added.

“The bubbles floating on the left side each contain drafts of green architectural drawings, and my main dividing element was thought of on the spot. It is a random wavy pattern that complements the drawing style most. The background is then filled with random golden geometry and fillers to make up the totality of the poster,” he stated.

Despite being second this year, he is still grateful for the opportunity to work among other architects in the Philippines.

“There is always something new to learn. Attending one of UAP’s events overwhelmed me since it was my first time seeing many architects in one room, especially with their exhibits. I had opportunities to have conversations with young professionals and my fellow students during the event,” he ended.

Indeed, these trios from the SEAITE department are making names in visual arts competitions. USLWB

Perlas said in an interview that his poster underlines the time everyone has and the need for everyone to allot some time to train crisis-response procedures.

“We allocate our time to jobs, school, leisure, etc. But do we take the time to attend training that enhances our safety in the event of a natural disaster? I think that everyone is aware of the dos and don’ts during a crisis, but I’ve seen that this is insufficient.

Therefore, while we still have time, we must be prepared, because if we are ready, we have nothing to fear,” he said.

Listen to your Art: Poster-Making Contest

Jerico A. Turo and Mharlo A. Abuan, BS Architecture 4 students, were awarded

2nd and 3rd place, respectively, by the Department of Health - Cagayan Valley Center for Health Development during the Mental Health Celebration “Listen to your Art: Poster Making” contest.

With the theme “YAPAK: Light the Way for Mental Health,” 15 masterpieces, regionwide, were submitted, but the masterpieces of the two Louisian Arkis touched the hearts of the judges, who named them 2nd and 3rd placers, respectively.

Turo’s masterpiece depicts how people conceal their genuine emotions because physical assessment of a person cannot determine the mental state as it is not visible. Everyone has difficulty managing stress, connecting with others, and making judgments, but a helping hand is a ray of hope for a person with mental illness. It stimulates moods, thinking, and behavior and offers light as a guide to addressing the issue.

Further, Mr. Abuan’s masterpiece means that in the darkest of times, if one can ignite the light, carry it, and illuminate it dawn will come on the path for a new footing where mental health will lead of a better understanding of oneself.

Indeed, Louisians’ artistic expertise is manifested in their consecutive victories in visual arts competitions. USLWB

Behind USL’s 4-year success!

The first rays of sunlight lit up the Good Shepherd Chapel, and the dawn chorus of melodic chorale drifted in as the whole Louisian community warmly welcomed its 4th University President on the 18th of October 2018.

As he unfolds a new journey, he is on the verge of passing the responsibility to another CICM missionary. Let us all take a glimpse at the four-year success of the University under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Renillo H. Sta. Ana CICM.

He has been with the University for the past four years, but despite the major problem the country had faced, the CoVid-19 pandemic, he never left the University amputated. Instead, he stood firm and guided everyone to continue especially in the education sector.

In such a short span of time, countless faithful efforts have been shared by wellmeaning achievers; but four years was also a gateway to years of deeper excellence. For an institution as fermented by wisdom and tested by fate, its Louisian Mantra is a fitting testament to its unbridled reputation as a center of profound education in the region, serving as the keystone for a stronger commitment to nurturing brilliant minds, firmer hands, and stouter hearts.

During his term, the University has been tested, but it has lived up to its mantra that USL is in Mission and Excellence. Despite the situation that we’ve all been through, the University, led by Fr. Sta. Ana, has done its mission in times of crisis and students excel in different board examinations.

As he bequeaths the mantle of his leadership in the University, we could only bask in deep gratitude for all the meaningful and unbending support that he had extended. However, he could have never made it this far or this much if not for everybody’s immense trust and confidence, which are so profusely given to him. As he humbly leaves an imprint of the legacy programs of great impact on the well-being of the Louisian community, which we achieved together and of which USL is among the beneficiaries, we could never ask for more!

He is the one who pushed that USL, being a CICM school, should live its mantra, “in Mission and Excellence.” He always

made sure that students not only excelled in academics but also knew the value of doing missions by helping the needy. Different projects and activities were initiated by Fr. Sta. Ana, such as the intensification of advocacy programs of the Center for Social Actions, which is known today as the Center for Engagement and CICM Advocacies, the Hatid-Kapatid program, and multiple relief operations.

The University of Saint Louis Tuguegarao stands on the historical milestones of outstanding board performances, excellent program accreditations, and autonomous status. Amidst its young existence, it persevered to provide quality, responsive, and globally competitive Catholic Education in the Cagayan Valley Region. Indeed, the University has found its niche in the northeastern Philippines as a premier Catholic University.

Looking at the humble beginnings of Fr. Sta. Ana, he was born on November 21, 1964, in Parañaque, Metro-Manila. He was raised with great love and care by his parents, Lucilo and Amparo. Responding to God’s invitation, he was officially ordained as a priest on May 8, 1992, at St. Andrew’s Parish Church Parañaque, Metro Manila.

Following the trail of his scholarly studies, he completed Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at Saint Louis University, Baguio City in 1984. Followed by his General Theological Studies at Maryhill School of Theology, Quezon City in 1992. Then he completed his masteral studies at St. Mary’s University in 2005.

Being a passionate learner with the potential of breathing life into his aspirations, he had his special studies in Spirituality in New York, USA, in 2002; units in Character Animation Program in British Columbia, Canada in 2003; and a French Language study in Belgium in 1989.

Armed with compassion and excellence, he started his missionary internship at Paraoisse de Ste. Croix in

Kinshasa, Republic of Zaire in 1989-1991. He became an OIC Director at St. Andrew’s School, Parañaque City in 1993, and continued his missionary works at Paroisse St. Eugene, Menkao, Democratic Republic of Congo from 1995-1997.

With dedication and a pioneering spirit, he became the Chaplain and the CICM Liaison Officer of this University from 1998-2002 and became an assisting priest at Holy Rosary Cathedral,
