USL produces 50 new Louisian ISO internal quality auditors
@SHERVEELENE KRISTEL P. BALI
The University of Saint Louis, in collaboration with BCJA Training and Consultancy, successfully trained 50 Louisian employees on QMS 105: Comprehensive Internal Quality Audit Training with Mock Audit.
The three-day training, held on March 9, 10, and 13, 2023, at the Bulwagang Teodulfo Domingo (New EMC), sought to produce competent and well-trained auditors who are capable of conducting internal quality audits.
USL’s Quality Management Representative and the Deputy QMR for Internal Quality Audit carefully selected each trainee who underwent the extensive training. They got hands-on experience with the mock audit at the Asset Management Office, Junior High School, Human Resource Management and Development Office, School of Education, Arts, and Sciences, and the Physical Plant Management and Development Office.
Ms. Lovely Joy O. Ruiz from the Senior High School Department
shared her learning insights on the importance of quality management. “It provided me with an opportunity to develop my capabilities in terms of quality management. As an academic leader, we must adhere to the procedures and guidelines designed to ensure quality and effective processes in achieving the long-term goals of the institution. I realized the importance of being a keen observer of matters that concern the different processes within a certain unit.”
Organized by the Institutional Development and Quality Assurance Office, the audit training was facilitated by Mr. Ronald Rey A. Matias and Mr. Benito C. Castillo Jr., Ed. D., of BCJA, which is a training and consulting firm that provides a wide variety of services, including in-house ISO 9001 training, public training, and other specialized services.
This audit training was administered as part of the continuous quality improvement schemes of the university’s Quality Management System. USL passed the International Organization for Standardization audit and acquired its ISO 9001-2015 Certification on September 8, 2022. USLWB

USL engages in series of benchmarking activities
Administrators and educators at the University of Saint Louis recently engaged in a series of benchmarking activities, amplifying their steadfast commitment to identifying ways to leverage 21st century learning methods and creating and delivering sustainable learning experiences for their students.
On January 23-24, 2023, USL met with administrators and educators of Saint Louis College of San Fernando in La Union and Saint Louis University in Baguio City, which sought to study the One Basic Education structure, systems, practices, and facility set-ups of USL’s fellow CICM institutions.
Led by University President Rev. Fr. Macwayne N. Maniwang, Ph.D., CICM, the USL team were represented by Dr. Emmanuel James P. Pattaguan, VP for Academics; Dr. Rina M. Reyes, VP for Administration; Dr. Celso L. Tuddao, VP for Finance; Mrs. Claire T. Gumarang, SHS Principal; Ms. Mary Ann A. Baquiran, JHS Principal; and Dr. Emily T. Mabborang, Elementary Principal.
They were also joined by Dr. Lailanie V. Pattaguan, JHS Assistant Principal; Ms. Lourdes C. Batac, Elementary Assistant Principal; Mrs. Riza C. Calimag, JHS POD for G7 and G8; Ms. Lovelisa Calimag, Elementary Faculty; Engr. Roxan S. Coballes, PPMDO Director; and Ms. Alejandra Baby Belen, Alumni Affairs Officer.
USL also initiated a two-day benchmarking activity in several institutions in the National Capital Region, which was held on February 20-21, 2023. It sought to identify areas for improvement and discuss strategies for implementation in the 21st century learning environment.
On the first day, the Phoenix Publishing House organized a half-day seminar for the USL delegates about moving toward an IBEd school structure. Dr. Cynthia C. Arcadio, PAASCU Chair for the Integrated
Basic Education Commission, was invited to deliver relevant knowledge and information on the above-mentioned topic.
The group eventually headed for the afternoon benchmarking session at the University of Santo TomasCommunications Bureau Office. Director Philippe Jose S. Hernandez and Assistant Director Faye M. Abugan shared and conferred their strategies for reaching impressive multimedia structures and processes such as broadcasting operations, creative and production services, and other online media platforms.
On the second day, USL also visited Golden Faith Academy, a Christian School for basic education in Taytay, Rizal. They were welcomed by Mrs. Nenita F. Cao, Executive Vice President/Trustee and School Directress; Mr. Carlos Ibarra Rev. F. Cao, Deputy School Director/Trustee; and Mr. Carlos Jovito F. Cao, Academic Support Services Head/Trustee.
Specifically, the following observations were elicited from the USL delegates:
Dr. Corpuz remarked, “With its young administrators and manpower, the school is so brave to do the unusual, all for the sound learning and development of its learners. I particularly love how they guide individual instruction for their elementary pupils to ensure that the foundational competencies are honed among them while training them to become self-directed or independent learners. Moreover, I also appreciate how they value their stakeholders, specifically their learners, as their feedback and experiences are utilized to come up with school decisions. The school may be young and physically small, but their teaching and learning processes are worth a benchmark that other schools must learn.”
“I learned a lot from the benchmarking activity with Golden Faith Academy School. Their instructional content that has undergone quality validation and
assurance, professional development programs that are responsive to the needs of their faculty, functional professional learning communities that promote collaboration among teachers, alternative classroom learning experiences, and the school’s vibrant, smart, and passionate leaders are all inspiring and noteworthy,” shared Mrs. Aquino.
“The benchmark we just had at Golden Faith Academy is worth the long trip. As I have shared with the group, we were brought to the right humble school worthy of our respect and admiration for their 25th year of development. The simple but very innovative way of promoting their school is evidenced by the many enrollees, especially in their Senior High School. It is indeed very inspiring how the family-owned school maintained discipline among all pupils and students. A salute to GFA,” said Mrs. Gumarang.
Dr. Mabborang also shared, “Powerful! The need for richer forms of education where information and knowledge work alongside the non-passive techniques, creativity, and analysis that matter in today’s learning processes is evident in GFA. I believe that the learning resources enable a mindset and culture of continuous improvement that impacts students’ attitudes toward school.”
The two-day activity was attended by University President, Rev. Fr. Macwayne N. Maniwang, CICM, Mrs. Luisa B. Aquino, Executive Assistant to the President; Dr. Herbert S. Corpuz, SEAS Dean; Dr. Emily T. Mabborang, Elementary Principal; Ms. Mary A. Ann Baquiran, JHS Principal; Mrs. Claire T. Gumarang, SHS Principal; Dr. Rizza D. Velasco, University Marketing Officer; and Mr. Michael P. Caparas, Assistant Head of Multimedia Productions.

@SHERVEELENE KRISTEL P. BALI
The University of Saint Louis marked the 13th Sacerdotal Anniversary of University President Rev. Fr. Macwayne N. Maniwang, CICM, Ph.D., with a Eucharistic celebration and thanksgiving program.
Honoring his devoted service to God and His ministry, the Louisian community came together at the Good Shepherd Chapel on April 17, 2023, for a Eucharistic mass. In his heartfelt homily, Fr. Maniwang shared his journey leading up to his calling, inspiring everyone to embrace their own paths with faith and purpose.
He remarked, “Thirteen years ago, when I had to say my final yes to the Lord, it was not an easy task to do. Because I know for sure that when I have to say yes, it is not only a yes for some time, but it will be a yes forever. Yet, what inspired me to say yes was the realization that all throughout my seminary journey, the Lord guided, inspired, supported, and loved me despite my frailties.”
“Fast forward, I am now 13 years in the priesthood. This priestly anniversary of mine is like a re-baptism of my commitment and love to God and His mission. Please join me in praying to the Lord that I may become faithful and loving in serving the people entrusted to my care. Rest assured, my dear brothers and sisters in Christ, that as long as I’m still with my own sanity, I will always do the best that I can for our university and for the people, the stakeholders of the university,” he added.
Following the mass, the attendees gathered at the Bulwagang Teodulfo Domingo for a thanksgiving program and dinner reception. USLWB

Empowering families through Project ARUGA’s parenting seminar
@CRISTALIE P. ALMAZAN
As part of Project ARUGA: “Assistance to Parents in Fostering Responsibility towards Understanding, Guiding, and Approaching their Children,” the Elementary School conducted a parenting seminar with the theme “Harmonizing Family Relationships: Strengthened Together with Christ,” held at the Good Shepherd Chapel on April 15, 2023.
The seminar aimed to equip parents with tools and guidance on how to better understand and approach their children, all while emphasizing the importance of faith in strengthening family bonds.
Rev. Fr. Ferdinand T. Maguigad, Ph.D., Director of Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary, Lyceum of Aparri, was invited to be the resource person on the topic, “Parenting as Shepherding,” and discussed
instilling the proper ways of dealing with children in this generation.
“Parenting is likened to being a shepherd tending his flock; he counts, he directs, and he protects,” he said in his talk. Fr. Maguigad compared raising children to shepherding. He contends that parents must establish boundaries, particularly with regard to the use of technology, and establish emotional connections with their kids. “Allow your child to complete monotonous tasks, instill social skills, and delay gratifications in order to raise a child who is prepared to handle the pressures of our fast-paced society,” he advised.
Project ARUGA, which is a joint effort of the Elementary Guidance Center, Office of the Principal, and Executive Family Council, organized the event. USLWB

@JENIKKO L. QUINTO
In celebration of International Women’s Day and National Women’s Month, the Guidance and Counseling Center conducted Project GANDA (Gender Awareness, Nurturance, and Development Advocacy) on March 8, 2023.
International Women’s Day is a worldwide event to recognize and mark women’s and girls’ achievements in all areas. This is an avenue to provide responsiveness to the progress made toward achieving gender equality and all other efforts yet to be accomplished.
The USL Guidance and Counseling Center spearheaded activities for students
regardless of gender to promote this cause. One of these is the “Kape Agape,” which offered free snacks that included brewed coffee, iced coffee, hot chocolate, bread, and tasty pastries. The free snacks were funded partly by the office’s Project GRIP (Getting Resources through Income-Generating Projects). A photo booth was also made available to capture great moments with emboldened students and individuals.
In the college department, a group of talented singers serenaded the audience by playing guitars and singing delightful songs. Moreover, a makeup tutorial was given by two students from the psychology program. Likewise, the office offered free haircuts and trimmings and
free use of massage chair coupons during the course of the event.
USL is gearing toward a gender-equal world - unbound by bias and judgment. Individually different yet unique, we can paint the world with inclusivity and equity.
Subsequently, USL CECA, through the Non-Teaching Personnel, organized an outreach program at Sitio Cannaman, San Antonio, Enrile, on March 11, 2023.

Louisian STARs, GEMs join debate seminar
@JONJE CALISTE
On February 1, 2023, select students from Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS) joined a debate seminar hosted by Councilor Atty. Marjorie Poblete Martin, member of the National Association of UNESCO clubs of the Philippines, along with the Athena Debate Society (ADS), the official debate organization of Cagayan State University – Andrews Campus, held at the University of Saint Louis.
The seminar highlighted and discussed the Asian-Parliamentary Debate format and its rules to prepare the students for the upcoming interschool debate competition that will be joined by different schools in Tuguegarao City and nearby municipalities. The speaker also shared her experiences and offered tips on how to become an effective debater.
After the lively discussions, studentled debate matchups were organized. The energy and passion of the students were electric as two teams from the JHS competed on the motion of citizenship and battled it out with well-reasoned
arguments, as the neophytes Jose Arugay and Beatrice Malillin, both Grade 10 students, came out as the best debater and the best speaker, respectively. Also, two passionate and well-informed teams from the SHS contended and brought their proficiency by showcasing meaningful and logical arguments to debunk each other’s side.
All in all, the sponsored seminar was a success as it allowed students to engage in thought-provoking debates while honing their reasoning skills.

USL Elementary school continues to be peace, life advocates
@MARK N. LANGCAY
The University of Saint Louis, through its Elementary CECA advocacy, conducted a Service Learning Program called Project PEACE-tahan “Pupils Expedite and Awake oneness for harmonious Community Engagement,” in collaboration with PMAJ Sharon C. Mallillin, one of the Executive Family Council (EFC) Officers and Philippine National Police officers, who served as a resource person during the activity at Sitio Cannaman, San Antonio, Enrile. She discussed peacebuilding in the community and shared various ways to mitigate
conflicts, violence, and hostility.
By advocating for peace and life, we can create a world where everyone can thrive and live to their fullest potential. It requires empathy, understanding, and a willingness to listen to those who may have different perspectives.
The USL elementary school continues to sustain this activity by preserving peace, resolving conflicts peacefully, and promoting harmony and coexistence. As Ronald Reagan said, “Peace is not the absence of conflict; it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means.” USLWB

SEAITE captures 2nd straight overall championship
@JONATHAN T. SANGDAAN JR.
The School of Engineering, Architecture, and Information Technology Education (SEAITE) continued to be the bastion of overall excellence after claiming USL’s 58th Founding Anniversary as overall champion once again.
With five events during the foundation week, the dragons flaunted their pedigree by ruling three tournaments to capture their second straight championship.
Leandro Daniel Paat, the SEAITE Governor, said in a messenger interview that he is grateful to everyone, especially the SEAITE students, for their support during the foundation week.
“As the governor of the winning department, all I can say is that this is the biggest achievement that the department has achieved for this academic year since the foundation day is the biggest event of the university. I want to extend this success not only to myself but also to my fellow council officers, my organizational officers, advisers, SEAITE instructors, and the whole population of the SEAITE department, not only being the participants but being the
biggest supporters of the department, to get the overall champion,” he said.
Paat shared that he had manifested the back-to-back championships of the department in the foundation days since the day he was elected as the governor. “It was conceived to be the biggest challenge personally and for me as the governor since the day I got elected. Despite the pressure and challenge, I manifested, viewed, and confidently stated that we would be the back-to-back champions,” he said.
“During the foundation, I saw that all the departments also had their best performances. I am not going to lie and say that they really had better performances, but I always believed in my participants more. That is why I always went to their respective rooms before their performances for them to hype up,” he added.
Due to the rigorous preparation of the department, the dragons harvested 873 points from 131 in socio-cultural events, 126 in special events, 382 in sports events, 144 in literary events, and 90 in visual events.
Paat also believes that the next SEAITE

Entitled “Boses mo, Respeto ko: Understanding Freedom of Speech and Expression,” the seminar sought to instill respect for freedom of speech and expression in the youth and equip them with the information they need to make the best decisions about their lives, communities, societies, and governments. council will also get the job done because they have witnessed how the current council struggled with university activities. “To the next SEAITE council, continue to ignite the fire we have started. I am confident that we will have a 3-peat championship for the next school year,” he said.
Meanwhile, the School of Accountancy, Business, and Hospitality fell short by only 30 points to the Dragons, settling as the first runner-up. However, the Lions won the special and literary events and were first runners-up in sports and visual events.
The Peacocks (Senior High School) followed the Lions with 787 points, the Pegasus (School of Education, Arts, and Sciences) with 756 points, the Snakes (School of Health and Allied Sciences) with 611 points, and the youngest team, the Phoenix (Junior High School), with 588 points.
