Current and former student leaders participated in a discourse on the theme “Student Leadership and Youth’s Coping Mechanisms for Online Schooling to Face-to-Face Set-Up” during the Konsi Hour TV show held on December 1, 2022, at the USL Friendship Park.
Sophia Corella, a 4th year accounting student and USL-SSC Vice-President, together with Ma. Azil Daniel, a 3rd year nursing student and MCNP-ISAP COL Chairman, headlined the talk show with their thoughts and insights on the topic as current student leaders.
The two young leaders were joined by Hon. Bienvenido De Guzman II, Tuguegarao City Vice Mayor, and Hon. Tirso Mangada, City Councilor, as USL alumni and current administration leaders, as well as Engr. Ariel Lorenzo, USL-ECE Program Chair, as a former student leader and USL alumni.
In line with the theme, Corella shared that adjusting her schedule arrangement and time management were some of the adjustments she made, noting that multitasking her school work and household chores is not already possible in the face-toface setting.
She also shared words of encouragement to those who find it hard to communicate and socialize with others after being used to being alone in the online
mode of learning. “You try to expand your horizons,” Pia emphasized. She urged the viewers to make the most of the inperson setup of the educational setting by reconnecting with friends and colleagues. “When I became a student leader, I became more vocal about my thoughts and became friendlier. I really want other students to know the importance of establishing great friendships,” she added.
Azil also motivated her fellow students to know the art of trying. “You’ll never know unless you try. I’m a manifestation, wherein I never really imagine myself being the chairman of the MCNP-ISAP Council of Leaders. Pero andito ako ngayon (But I am here today), representing our institution,” she remarked.
Konsi Hour, a government-initiated show by the Office of the City Vice Mayor, aims to provide a non-political, safe, and positive stage not only for the city councilors but also for representatives of various sectors to voice their opinions, share their inspiring stories, and inform the public of what needs to be disseminated. Pursuing grass-roots participation, Konsi Hour visited USL as the first stop of its academic edition. Hosted by Mr. Sander Sedano, USLLMS Coordinator, the TV show was simultaneously aired live via RBC cable and social media pages. USLWB

USL honors students’ excellence
Honoring the accomplishments and achievements of Louisians, the University of Saint Louis conducted the 4th Gawad San Luis for Students on December 13, 2022, at the Bulwagang Teodulfo Domingo.
The said program was organized by the Office of Student Affairs and Services(OSAS), headed by Mrs. Ma. Leonora M. Cagurangan, Dean of OSAS.
The Gawad San Luis is a search that recognizes and honors students who exemplify the University’s five core values and have made significant achievements.
The program was opened by Dr. Rina M. Reyes, who motivated everyone that the awards they received were the products of their hard work, conscious efforts, time, and the spirit of always trying.
“The awards and achievements in college must not only bring you to the stage and should not only be for gathering tokens and mementos but should create in you a sense of urgency to make your professional contributions outside the University and at home,” Dr. Reyes said.
Moreover, Rev. Fr. Renillo H. Sta. Ana, CICM, University President, inspired everyone by comparing the life of Saint Louis to the challenges experienced by the awardees, especially during the time of the pandemic.
“May the name of San Luis continue to be your inspiration. The person who went through a pandemic during his own time was not defeated but rather soared in great spirit to be able to be of service to others,” he said.
“That’s the Louisian spirit. Even challenged by many difficulties, we can still soar even higher,” he added.

USL celebrates Christmas, pays tribute to Fr. Neil
@SHERVEELENE KRISTEL P. BALI
Cheers filled the James Ter Meer Gymnasium as administrators, faculty, and non-teaching personnel, came together for the annual USL Employee’s Christmas Program on December 21, 2022.
A dance presentation by the USL Executive Advisory Board followed by a mob dance by select employees across the departments marked the opening of the program. After a year of hard work, the employees enjoyed the Christmas celebration with prizes and giveaways through parlor games and raffle draws.
A tribute program for Rev. Fr. Renillo H. Sta Ana, CICM, University President, headlined the night’s festivities following the first segment of the program. This honors his illustrious career as USL’s leading figure for the past four years.
Each department’s representative then
took turns sharing their stories and messages of gratitude, giving gifts, and dedicating songs for Fr. Sta Ana.
In his response message, Fr. Sta Ana shared his joy of working as a leader in the educational setting. “I believe the head of the school’s job is to always see his people, the talents that are so creative, dynamic, and full of wisdom.”
“I’m very happy. Those are privileged years to be able to work with you. It was a wonderful time spent with you all. When I started this presidency, I said this would be a Father’s mission, to be the father of this university. I hope you were able to feel it.”
“I’m happy that I was able to continue and start improvements in the university, and I hope and pray that you will all continue to contribute to the University’s growth. The University has a beautiful mission and
vocation. Continue with that, always, with a missionary heart.”
Under the leadership of Fr. Sta Ana, USL has made strides in a range of areas, as exemplified by the acquisition of ISO certification, the rise of the new Bishop Constant Jurgens Campus in Brgy. aims to provide assistance to the observable needs of adult learners in the community. This is also aligned with the focal advocacy of non-teaching personnel at the university, which is adult education, gender, and development.
With the perceived parenting needs of Sitio Cannaman, the following are aimed to be achieved after the activity: equip parents in the community with knowledge on childrearing, child growth, and development; provide family management abilities; create new attitudes and behaviors that can assist parents in their parental roles inside and outside their homes. Project TEACHER is on the go!
@ARVIN JOSHUA M. DANAO
The USL Teacher Education students successfully completed the Project TEACHER’s (Tutorial for Engagement, Advancement & Collaboration towards Holistic Educational Reformation) Early Learning Needs Assessment phase.
The team traveled to the partner communities at Sitio Raniag, Liwan Enrile, San Antonio, Enrile, and Sitio Damortis, Solana.
The Pre-service teachers tirelessly rendered academic support to the Daycare pupils in assessing their educational needs. They used an assessment tool measuring pupils’ cognitive, affective, and physical competencies. As they observed, they engaged the children in different activities to measure all competencies. The result of the needs assessment shall be the basis for developing and implementing an instructional plan for future teaching tutorials.
Project TEACHER aims to provide educational support through mass instructions and one-on-one tutoring to improve daycare pupils’ early learning achievement among various domains. The project provides a venue for holistic educational reformation that benefits both the program implementers and clients. Through the program, the teachers and students will broaden and deepen their understanding of content and pedagogy. At the same time, the clients are provided with additional opportunities for total development.
Moreover, the said project is part of their Service-Learning Program, which serves as a training ground for the Pre-service teachers as they are given a chance to teach children from different walks of life. USLWB

us during our days here in the then Saint Louis College of Tuguegarao and now the University of Saint Louis.”
A tribute to the golden jubilarians followed the opening, in which they were given certificates and souvenirs. In his message, Mr. Lincoln Pobre, the batch 1972 representative, shared the honor with the school and their teachers, families, communities, and the people around them, who played important roles in their formation to be the people they are today. “When we look back at our lives, we are proud, and we can say that we are good and upright people. This is a testament to the kind of Louisian education we received.”
“Our generation has lived the prime and productive part of our lives. We made our mark, and though we’re still living and kicking, we will continue to make our legacy. So from an older generation to the new, younger generations, we encourage you to take this opportunity not just to celebrate but also to reflect on your lives. We challenge you to live your life in a way that will make you and our alma mater proud,” he concluded.
Mrs. Melany de Guzman-Rey, batch 1997 president, then led the alumni pledge
and manifesto, which signifies their full support for the mission of the university.
Inspirational Speaker Atty. Reinier R. Yebra, high school batch 1997 alumni and 2009 bar topnotcher, underlined the life lessons he learned from his mistakes and shortcomings as a student. He shared that he takes time to reflect on his mistakes, identify their impact on his life, and make resolutions so that he can do better next time.
“I learned a lot of lessons from my mistakes. When I grew older, I realized that I should be sharing my lessons with others and that I should be serving our kababayan (fellow countrymen).”
Following the inspirational message, batch 1997 alumni paid a tribute to their former teachers and turned over the key of responsibility for the next homecoming host to the 1998 high school batch.
The host, the 1997 high school batch, delighted the audience with zestful performances, ice breakers, and raffle draws. Mr. Sander T. Sedano, USL-LMS Coordinator, and Mrs. Luisa B. Aquino, MSIT, EAP for Institutional Development and Quality Assurance, served as the masters of ceremonies. USLWB

Rev. Fr. Macwayne N. Maniwang is 5th University president
USL’s new President has his modest beginnings in Barangay Poblacion, San Francisco (Anao-aon), Surigao del Norte, Philippines. He was born on November 11, 1980 to his parents, Mr. Antonio Hinay Maniwang and Mrs. Isabelita Nimez Maniwang, who raised him with a lot of love, care, and support. He grew up with his three siblings, Michelle, Anthony, and Menchu.
As a student, he finished his Elementary and Secondary years as Class Valedictorian at the Anao-aon Central Elementary School (1993) and San Nicolas High School (1997), respectively. He graduated Cum Laude with the degree Bachelor of Arts major in Philosophy at the University of Saint La Salle in Bacolod City, Philippines in 2001. He was the Lone Outstanding Awardee, both in curricular and extracurricular activities when he finished Theology at the CICMMaryhill School of Theology in New Manila, Quezon City in 2006. He was Summa Cum Laude for his Licentiate Degree at the Accademia Alfonsiana, Rome, Italy, where he specialized in Moral Theology specifically on Social Morality in 2008. Undoubtedly a man of academics, he received an Academic Distinction Award when he completed his Doctorate Degree at Saint Paul University Philippines in 2015 with his dissertation on Student Discipline Management System in the CICM School: A Policy Study.
Tracing how he responded to the call of the CICM mission, he went through the CICM Pre-Novitiate Formation in 1997-2001 at the CICM Maryshore Formation Center in Talisay, Bacolod City. After which, he had the Novitiate Formation
Year at the CICM Novitiate Formation House in Taytay, Rizal in 2001. Later, he had his four-year Post-Novitiate Formation at the CICM-Asia International Formation Center. He was ordained as a deacon on November 28, 2009, and became a CICM Priest on April 17, 2010 at the St. Francis Xavier Parish in his hometown in San Francisco (Anao-aon), Surigao del Norte.
Armed with the CICM charism, he took on his first mission as an Assistant Parish Priest at the Holy Rosary Parish in Tala, Caloocan City, and then at the Mabuting Pastol Parish in Quezon City. Throughout these assignments, he also served as Professor of Moral Theology at the CICMMaryhill School of Theology.
In 2010, he packed his bags and came to the north as Chaplain of the University of Saint Louis. Here, he introduced numerous strategies to invite more people to partake in the mission of the Church through the CICM Mission Month Fund Drive and in the evangelization of people. He also championed restorative justice especially in dealing with employee and student cases. Concurrently, he served as USL’s Head of Philosophy and Religious Instruction, and coordinated and co-wrote the CICM Religious Education Textbooks from Kinder to Grade 12 for the CICM schools.
From USL, he took on newer missionary assignments at the Saint Louis University in Baguio City, where he became Parish Priest of the Saint Aloysius Gonzaga Parish, (SLU Parish), Chaplain of the Sacred
Heart Hospital, Principal of the Saint Louis University-Junior High School, and Vice President for Mission and Identity.
At present, he chairs the CICM-Provincial Committee on Education (CICM-PCE) and CICM Philippines School Network (CICMPSN).
His youth, dynamism, and congenial personality captivatingly draw individuals to him. He is a man in high spirits, upfront in his words, forward in his actions, reflective and discerning in his decisions, farsighted but realistic in his vision, and ever true to his vocation and mission.
At the age of 42, he is at the helm of leading the University of Saint Louis as the institution’s youngest President.
