This was also a year of reckoning, as we overtly faced the overpowering and persistent racial/ethnic discrimination and inequity that cuts across every aspect of American society, including our healthcare system. In our College, we strive for inclusive excellence but recognize we have much work to do

Despite this changed world, we have persevered in the way only nurses know how, with resilience and dedication. I am inspired by how our faculty, staff, and students have stepped in and stepped up to be a nurse, parent, child, sibling, counselor, or friend for those who were sick and alone during this time. I am proud of

Moreover, during this year, our faculty have remained extremely productive, teaching more than 785 courses and submitting 80 grant proposals, which produced more than 2.2 million in funding. In addition, the faculty finished the year with 125 publications. Our students have been equally successful through this year, clocking over 120,500 clinical hours, producing 19 publications, and making 17 presentations. Lastly, over 100 of our students were awarded educational scholarships totaling $320,086.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

You would think this note would be easy for a writer. But so much has happened that I found it difficult to know where to begin.

So, welcome to the first edition of the “Captain’s Log” that I am writing as Dean. What a year! We started off with the World Health Organization designating 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife. The world entered a pandemic, and here we are many long, hard months later—our frontline nurses are exhausted. The high demands on nurses are exacerbated by the effects of the pandemic, leading to a decline in our mental and physical well-being.

Several events have happened throughout this year on the academic side as well. Most recently, we streamlined the undergraduate program to have a greater impact on reversing the local and national nursing shortage trends. We will expand the number of prelicensure students to be admitted in the traditional and accelerated nursing pathways. These changes will significantly increase the pipeline of new nurses into the workforce.

Furthermore, the College began a new partnership with Port Tampa Bay to create the first-of-its-kind on-site nurse-managed clinical outreach providing direct care to the thousands of seafarers whose global maritime routes bring them to Port Tampa Bay each year.

how our USF Nursing community has risen to the challenge. For example, the College of Nursing has provided a large part of the workforce to test and vaccinate members of the community, including patients at Morsani Center clinics and students from Student Health Services. Faculty also provided many hours of pharmacy support to ensure that clinics had prepared vaccines, mostly in the month of April. The College held four vaccine clinics in the Gathering Space, where nursing students vaccinated over 200 students, staff, and faculty under the supervision of faculty. Additionally, many staff volunteered to register patients, clean supplies, and ensure a safe and organized process for all. Together, the College of Nursing community logged over 40,000 volunteer hours. The free Frontline Nurses Program just celebrated 1,000 downloads of the podcasts intended to provide working nurses with the tools for self-care.

Executive Team USHA M ENON, PHD, R N, FAAN Dean and Professor, College of Nursing Senior Associate Vice President, USF Health University of South Florida Umenon@usf.edu Usha Menon, PhD, RN, FAAN, is Dean and Professor at the USF College of Nursing and Senior Associate Vice President of USF Health. Previously, she was Associate Dean of Research and Global Advances in the College of Nursing and co-principal investigator of the NIH-funded All Of Us Research Program at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. A major emphasis of her research is culturally sensitive health promotion and illness prevention behaviors among under-represented populations, focusing on cancer and diabetes with a strong emphasis on transdisciplinary implementation science. She has garnered over $60 million in total research funding with her team. Her leadership focus is on diversity of thought and scholarship in nursing as well as equity across faculty advancement. She has taught in programs across the nursing curriculum, from the BSN to the PhD, and mentors junior faculty across health sciences in medicine, microbiology, and pharmacy, in the United States and Ethiopia, with a focus on translational research and team science. She was inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing (2010) and to the Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame (2014) and was recognized as a Top 100 Alumni Legacy Leader by the Indiana University School of Nursing (2014). Dr. Menon is a recognized expert in behavior change theory, interventions, and health equity. An engaging and passionate public speaker, she is a frequent consultant and presenter to national and international groups of researchers, clinicians, and community members.

TRACEY L. TAYLOR, D NP, APRN, ACNP-BC Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Educational Innovation, College of Nursing University of South Florida traceytaylor@usf.edu Tracey Taylor, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC, is the Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Educational Innovation at the USF College of Nursing. She received her master of science in nursing with a specialization as an acute care nurse practitioner and Doctor of Nursing practice degrees from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in 2005 and 2010,

respectively. From 2010 through 2019, Dr. Taylor was at the University of South Alabama College of Nursing where she served for several years as the Assistant Dean of Clinical Affairs. In 2019, Dr. Taylor joined the USF College of Nursing as the Associate Dean for Graduate Clinical Programs. In 2020, she moved into the Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Educational Innovation role, where she presently serves. Since 2005, Dr. Taylor has continued clinical practice as an acute care nurse practitioner in a variety of settings, including emergency and inpatient medicine. In 2020, Dr. Taylor was the recipient of the USF Health Culture Coin Award and received recognition for her work during the pandemic from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) 2020 Year of the Nurse & Midwife. She is a member of several professional nursing organizations, including Sigma Theta Tau International, the AACN, and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF). In 2021, she was appointed as a member of the NONPF curricular leadership committee.

With over 30 years of clinical experience and significant research expertise in labor and birth, Elizabeth “Betty’ Jordan is a recognized international nursing leader in maternal and newborn outcomes research, education, and practice. She previously was the Baccalaureate Program Director at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and the Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins University Global mHealth Initiative. At Johns Hopkins, she was recognized for her exemplary clinical and teaching skills with the 2005 Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence. She served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses and the Board for the Healthy Mothers/Healthy Babies Coalition. Dr. Jordan was recognized as one of the “Top 100 Women in Maryland” for her dedication and service to Maryland in helping address the issue of poor birth outcomes. She served as a content expert and internal program evaluator for the first national mobile health program titled “Text4baby.” At the USF College of Nursing, Dr. Jordan led the prelicensure program curriculum revision and, in 2018, launched an accelerated baccalaureate program. Dr. Jordan continues to facilitate and to grow key academic practice partnerships, blending research, evidence-based practice, and leadership, to create a positive learning environment for students and inspire faculty to share her vision of a healthy, student-centric environment. Dr. Jordan received her BSN from the University of Maryland, MSN from the University of Delaware, and DNSc from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.

EDUCATIONAL DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

Tanya Hodges. EdD, is the Director of Student Affairs at the USF College of Nursing.

Dr. Hodges received her bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of St. Joseph and her master’s degree in educational leadership, management, and policy from Seton Hall University. In May 2016, she successfully defended her dissertation at Drexel University in fulfillment of a doctorate in educational administration. The focus of her research was to explore perceptions of underrepresented minority medical students on factors influencing academic performance. Prior to joining USF, Dr. Hodges served as the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs from 2014 to 2019 at New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York, and as the Director of Academic Retention/Operations for Hospitality Management from 2009 to 2014 at Monroe College in New Rochelle, New York. While at Monroe College, she also served on the faculty, teaching

Deleise S. Wilson, PhD, MEd, RN, CSSGB, is Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Associate Professor at the USF College of Nursing. Dr. Wilson received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Northern Caribbean University (1986) and a master in nursing education from Teachers College, Columbia University (1994). She completed a PhD in nursing with an emphasis on healthcare systems effectiveness (2011) and a three-year postdoctoral fellowship in implementation science (2014) at the University of Michigan. Between 1994 and 2006, she served as adjunct faculty at Columbia University and the University of Michigan Schools of Nursing. She was an assistant professor at Loma Linda University School of Nursing (2002-2006) and at the University of Michigan School of Nursing (2014-2015). From 2015 to 2020, she was the Director of Nursing at Kettering College, where she led innovative educational approaches that improved student, faculty, and program outcomes. In 2017, she was selected for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) - Wharton Executive Leadership program. Dr. Wilson conducts research and publishes in the following areas: high reliability behaviors among charge nurses, the association between safety organizing and perceptions of patient safety culture, and targeted fall prevention interventions. She is also a coinvestigator of the largest epidemiologic study of Caribbean Adventist Families. Her area of clinical expertise is pediatric critical care. Dr. Wilson is involved in several community service programs. In 2019, she was a recipient of a congressional citation for her work as President of the Association of Black Seventh-Day Adventist Nurses.

DELEISE S. W ILSON, PHD, M ED, RN, CSSGB

Ivonne Hernandez, PhD, RN, IBCLC, is the inaugural Chief Officer of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and an Assistant Professor at the USF College of Nursing. Dr. Hernandez received her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from USF and has over 20 years of experience in maternal-child health with a specialization in lactation. She provided her clinical expertise in the role of nurse consultant for the Florida Perinatal Quality Collaborative (FPQC), Mother’s Own Milk (MOM) Statewide Initiative, 2016-2019. Her current research interests include innovations to improve maternal-child health with a focus on infant feeding practices of underserved, vulnerable populations and to create measurable change to impact diversity, equity, and inclusion in the nursing profession to positively impact health outcomes for our nation. Dr. Hernandez serves on the Status of Latino (SOL) USF Presidential Advisory Committee, the Chair of the Diversity Committee, and is a member of the Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure Committee.

She is actively engaged in community service as the President of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses West Florida local chapter. She serves as a member of the College of Nursing Community Advisory Board and a board member of the Brain Expansions Scholastic Training (BEST) Medical Academy, a premier pipeline program to support the mission of working with underserved groups to prepare future, diverse healthcare professionals.

Denise Maguire, PhD, is the Senior Associate Dean of Alumni, Community, and Global Engagement and tenured Associate Professor at the USF College of Nursing. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Niagara University, a master of nursing in Parent-Child Nursing from Boston University, and her PhD in nursing science from the University of Florida. She spent the majority of her clinical nursing career as a neonatal intensive care unit nurse and nurse manager, practicing in New York, Boston, and St. Petersburg, Florida. Dr. Maguire joined the College of Nursing faculty in 2007, where she has served in several faculty, research, and administrative roles. She was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2017.

Before pursuing her passion for leadership in higher education, Dr. Hodges served under the superintendent of a large consolidated public school district and as a marketing and research development coordinator in the spinal division at the former Tyco Healthcare/US Surgical, both in Connecticut. Throughout her professional career, she has done continuous research on the impacts of inclusivity and multicultural awareness in education and has spent a significant portion of her higher education experience as an administrator, leader, educator, mentor, and advisor centered on creating and measuring student-learning outcomes and potential barriers to student success.

BRITTANY SHEEHY, PHD Executive Liaison to the Dean, College of Nursing University of South Florida (813) 974-9091 / Bsheehy@usf.edu Brittany Sheehy, PhD, serves as the Executive Liaison to the Dean at the USF College of Nursing. Dr. Sheehy received her bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science, her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in student affairs, and her doctorate degree in higher education administration from USF. Prior to joining the College, Dr. Sheehy served as the Director of Student Affairs at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine from 2018 to 2021 and as the Associate Director of Academic Affairs for the College of Marine Science from 2014 to 2018. While at the College of Marine Science, she also served as an adjunct instructor, teaching academic success and university experience courses. Dr. Sheehy has also served in a number of high-level administrative roles and settings, including leadership administration, admissions, undergraduate advising, pre-health professional programs, graduate student advising, graduate student academic affairs and student affairs, and professional academic and student affairs. Dr. Sheehy’s focus is on developing and leading the administration of policies and procedures through systematic and data-driven approaches. She has an unmatched ability to create strong partnerships within both the community and the university. She is a collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills to foster meaningful relationships.

JE S S ICA GEL A B E R T, MS M Director, Finance, Administration, and Operations, College of Nursing University of South Florida (813) 396-9654 / jgelabert@usf.edu Jessica Gelabert, MSM, is the Director of Finance, Administration, and Operation at the USF College of Nursing. She received her bachelor of science in biology and environmental science and policy from Clark University in 2000. She earned her Master of Science in management from USF in 2021. She oversees budget, finances, human resources, and operations and serves as the College’s IT liaison. A lifelong analyst, Jessica has a passion for data quality and reporting.

RESEARCH

In keeping with programmatic growth strategies, in January 2020, an accelerated second-degree pathway was initiated at the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus with 30 enrollees. Educational initiatives during calendar year 2020 were focused on COVID-19 education, community outreach/alternative clinical opportunities, and global virtual exchanges with global partners in Colombia and the United Kingdom. This robust year of 2020 also brought new clinical opportunities that were forged with community and clinical partners to enhance clinical experiences and preceptorships challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic.

STUDENT AFFAIRS

In 2020, we enrolled 1,277 students, of which RN-BSN comprised 58%, upper division comprised 20%, the accelerated pathway across all campuses comprised 18%, and the veteran-tailored VCARE program comprised 4%. Utilizing virtual pinning celebrations, the undergraduate program recognized 519 graduates during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, 111 outstanding, academically high-performing students were inducted to the Sigma Theta Tau National Honor Society during virtual ceremonies.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

To date, our graduate students have logged over 30,000 clinical hours in the community for COVID-19-related endeavors. These unique opportunities have included COVID-19 testing, immunizations, collaborations with the health department to assess infection control practices in 72 long-term care facilities, and remote monitoring of discharged COVID-19 patients through an interdisciplinary model. These efforts were joined by the over 10,000 hours provided by our faculty and staff in community relief, in either direct care or supervision of students. Despite the challenges, our baccalaureate nursing program earned an impressive 95.5% NCLEX first-time pass rate, and the nurse practitioner concentrations earned a remarkable combined 97.81% certification rate. Raising the standard even higher, students in the nurse anesthesia major earned an incredible 100% certification rate for the second year in a row. Looking ahead to next year, we will launch a new post-graduate certificate nurse practitioner offering in Adult Gerontology Acute Care and Family. We are also excited to begin offering a new first of its kind, interdisciplinary post-graduate integrative pain management certificate.

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS & EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION

This has been a banner year for academics at the USF Health College of Nursing. Like many other colleges around the country, clinical site placements were halted altogether in response to the COVID-19 crisis. However, despite a global pandemic, our hard-working, dedicated faculty were able to ensure that students were educated with the highest standards of quality and rigor. Innovative excellence was truly born out of extreme difficulty. Lessons learned are being incorporated into the curricula across undergraduate and graduate programs as we boldly face the “new normal.” Our community partners also stepped up during this period, ensuring support of our students through clinical placements and demonstrating a true partnership model.

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS & EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION

Graduate Clinical Programs Our graduate clinical programs have had many changes over the past year. Our tremendous faculty and staff teams have worked tirelessly to ensure timely progression of students, even while moving to remote learning and identifying alternative clinical opportunities after current clinical placement sites halted clinicals.

One example of an alternative clinical opportunity is the Transitional Care Center at Tampa General Hospital, which is still ongoing. The Transitional Care Center is an interdisciplinary telehealth unit for patients with COVID-19 who are discharged. Our graduate clinical students are integral in the care provided to these patients. In addition to providing needed care, students learn how to function as part of an interdisciplinary team and become experts in the use of telehealth, both skills that will be invaluable to them as advanced practice providers. A manuscript detailing this, and other alternative clinical opportunities, is in press.

In addition to swiftly pivoting during the pandemic, we made significant changes to our programs. In the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program, we moved students to a four-phase project format and formed a DNP committee to review projects to ensure rigor and support student success. We added a Post-Masters Certificate in Adult-Gerontology Acute Care and a Pain Management Fellowship. The Nursing Education Concentration is now only offered as a Post-Masters Certificate, and the oncology subspecialty within the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Concentration has been sunset. We are also developing a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Concentration with the goal of enrolling students in the Fall 2022 semester.

Honors received this year include a CVS Health Foundation Grant to provide $3,000 in scholarships to family nurse practitioner students and the achievement of a 100% overall pass rate in three concentrations: Adult-Gerontology Acute Care, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care, and Family Nurse Practitioner.

Nurse Anesthesia Programs In 2020, early in the pandemic, the DNP Nurse Anesthesia major and Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia Program were among the first at USF to successfully transition select courses in the curriculum back to a live face-to-face format to support student progression. Simultaneously, a new Assistant Program Director was identified and promoted, followed by the identification of a new Simulation Coordinator and a DNP Project Coordinator.

STUDENT AFFAIRS

Academic achievements related to the fellowship include the development of a program initiative for those with opioid use disorder who present for surgery. This work was recently accepted for publication in the Journal of PeriAnesthesia Nursing. The work was also disseminated internationally as the Finnish Association of Nurse Anesthetists requested the program. The Opioid Free Anesthesia and Pain Management Program, which provides education in the form of didactic modules and simulation scenarios, was delivered to this organization during the past year. This effort was published in April 2020 by the Finnish Journal of Nurse Anesthesia 4/2020 (Spirium). The Advanced Pain Management Fellowship obtained two unrestricted medical education grants ($18,703 each) from Pacira BioSciences. This company markets Iovera, a cryoanalgesia strategy for those with pain. The partnership with USF has met the goal of establishing relationships between academia and corporate America. A lecture series was developed for the Florida Area Health Education Centers (AHEC). The 4-part lecture series included (1) Opioid Prescribing, (2) Integrative Pain Strategies, (3) Multimodal Pharmacologic Approaches, and (4) Neurophysiology of Pain. This lecture series is currently being utilized as continuing education for physicians renewing licensure in the state of Florida. A Pain Management and Opioid Stewardship Education for Medical Schools was created utilizing curriculum from the fellowship to assist with training 170 medical students annually at USF. Sixteen pain modules were developed, with the main emphasis of the curriculum to provide future physicians with knowledge of pain management techniques that are devoid of opioids.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION

The Advanced Pain Management Fellowship is a COA-approved fellowship for experienced practicing CRNAs across the United States in which fellows must complete 120 hours of clinical training during a 12-week summer session. The fellowship worked hard and used past graduates to expand clinical training sites. Presently, the Advanced Pain Management Fellowship has clinical affiliation agreements with over 30 sites. In 2021, 22 fellows are graduating from the program; however, the fellowship is expanding, with 30 fellows expected to graduate in August 2022. The fellowship is extremely popular and continues to receive many applications. For example, when the application portal opened in January, it closed after only two weeks when 40 applications for 30 slots were received.

Pain Program

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS & EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION

The program instituted its own weekly virtual Town Hall Meeting Information and Q&A Sessions to help support the 144 student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs), six faculty, and two administrative staff in navigating the rapidly changing environment created by the pandemic. In May 2020, 50 new DNP Nurse Anesthesia students were onboarded and three new faculty positions were recruited, with successful interviews of six candidates. Despite the temporary cancellation of elective surgeries by the Governor of Florida, the pause in rotations for SRNAs at all clinical training sites, and COA accreditation to disallow counting simulated anesthesiology cases or clinical time, the program worked over and above to ensure that all SRNAs were rerouted to complete their minimum required 2000 hours and 600 cases on-time to meet graduation requirements in December 2020. Among this cohort, 100% met the minimum passing score on the first attempt at the Self-Evaluation Examination (SEE) to meet graduation requirements. This cohort went on to obtain a 100% first-time pass rate on the National Certification Exam (NCE) within 16 days following completion of the program. Despite the many challenges during 2020, Karla Maldonado (CRNA faculty), received the 2020 American Association of Nurse Anesthesiologist Janice Drake Humanitarian CRNA Award, Ken Wofford became CHSE Certified, and Michelle Canale (CRNA Program Director) became Vice President of the Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetists.

Center for Experiential Learning and Simulation The USF College of Nursing George & Marian Miller Center for Virtual Learning, commonly referred to as the Center for Experiential Learning and Simulation (CELS) lab welcomed back students and faculty for in-person simulation activities during the Summer 2020 semester. The challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic were addressed with numerous safety measures implemented for all individuals involved in simulation education. Personal protective equipment, face shields, surface disinfectants, and limits on the number of learners in the lab allowed for a safe environment for students and faculty. The CELS faculty adapted to the “new normal” created by the pandemic and quickly developed hybrid lab-classroom activities and boot-camp style learning activities. In 2020, the CELS lab supported 207 simulation activities for 8,207 learners totaling 1,113 total hours of instruction. The lab activities allowed our College of Nursing graduate and undergraduate students to continue to meet their curriculum requirements for graduation and to cement the skills needed for their future careers.

The CELS lab spaces have also undergone a transformation with a reorganized supply room and a new inventory tracking system. This new tracking system ensures adequate supplies are ordered and available for lab activities. The lab team conducted a needs assessment for updating all simulation equipment. A proposal was submitted to utilize end of year funds to purchase new simulation equipment. This substantial investment will allow the College of Nursing to meet the needs of our current and future students in obtaining the necessary skills required in the ever-changing healthcare workplace. The CELS lab is also involved in interprofessional education opportunities, also serving the USF Health Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy.

COVID-19 also had a significant impact on College operations. During Summer 2020, the entire building was sanitized. Throughout the building, personal protective equipment was made available, including new sanitizer stands. To continue operations for faculty and staff, over 50 “drive through” or “meet and greet pickups” of screens and laptops were organized.

The year 2020 was an extremely busy year for the Human Resources unit. The College hired 11 new faculty. Of these, seven are on the Clinical Teaching track, including a new Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and a new Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs, and four are on the Tenure/Tenure Track. In addition to the faculty hires, 10 new staff, including a new Director of Student Affairs and a new Director of Finance, Administration, and Operations, were hired. Of the total hires, 9 are under-represented minorities. Adjuncts continue to be an integral part of the College’s staffing model. During the past year, 85 adjunct appointments were made in Fall 2020, 100 in Spring 2021, and 77 in Summer 2021.

The Business Administration unit also presented a three-part budget workshop series for the College, which was designed to answer the “Who, What, When, and How” related to college budgets and designed to improve cross-college communication and transparency on resource stewardship. The workshop helped to provide context for many of the financial decisions made by senior leadership.

The unknown impact to the state budget due to COVID-19 resulted in a “hold back” of funding resources. However, the College of Nursing was able to make a substantial investment in the upgrade or replacement of simulation equipment. The 2020 year also marked the beginning of the College’s computer replacement program, intended to replace computers for individuals every 3 to 4 years. This allowed the College to operationalize computer replacement by planning budget allocation, ensuring that faculty and staff have updated equipment with a single laptop that is portable, decreasing the need for a desktop and laptop for each person and thus saving additional resources.

During 2020, the Business Administration unit was formed, merging Finance and Operations with Human Resources under one director. This has allowed for increased communication and coordination. One such measurable outcome was an elimination of pay distribution errors. This team was further broadened by the addition of a business analyst who brought expertise in the College’s enrollment and tuition modeling. An administrative pool component was added to allow for increased efficiencies in administrative services, allowing seamless support for executive faculty and staff. A new shared position between the research office and Business Administration was created, serving purchasing needs across the College. In 2020, both a new Director of Finance, Administration, and Operations and a new Human Resources Administrator were hired.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION The purpose of the Diversity Committee is to promote and enhance a culturally and ethnically diverse student body, faculty, staff, and environment. The Chief Officer of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion provides guidance and works closely with the Diversity Committee to support key diversity and equity initiatives for the College. Diversity Committee members also serve on Presidential Advisory Committees, such as the Status of Latinos (SOL), Committee on Black Affairs (COBA), and the Social Justice taskforce.

The Committee works to increase knowledge and use of culturally responsive engagement with other faculty, students, staff, and the community through the provision of educational programs, events, training sessions, and experiential activities on issues of diversity relevant to the College and society. The Diversity Café Series, an educational program, completed 10 sessions that focused on a range of diverse topics that engaged members in discussion and sharing. Collaborations with key stakeholders, such as the Office of Multicultural Affairs and USF Health Shared Student Services (the Center for Wellness, Engagement, Leadership, and Learning [The WELL]), continue to support planning of our key events, such as Black Heritage, Hispanic Heritage, Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Heritage, and Pride Month as well as the USF Health Multicultural Week. Over the past year, as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, our signature events were planned and implemented using various virtual platforms to engage our faculty, staff, students, and community members.

Signature Events H I SP A N I C H E R I TAGE EVENT (SEPTEM BER- OCTOBE R) The College of Nursing along with partners (The WELL, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Morsani College of Medicine, Hispanic Association of Pharmacy Students, the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, and West Florida nursing chapter) hosted the Medical Spanish Expo, an annual event to celebrate Hispanic Heritage. The event increased awareness of language access strategies and aimed to provide cross-cultural understanding, appreciation, celebration, and social interactions to break down stereotypes. The event was held virtually with students, faculty, staff, and community partners. The Comida Familiar – Family Food & Recipe Exchange, hosted with partners The WELL and the Hispanic Association of Pharmacists, celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by having participants share a recipe that represents Latinx culture, history, or family traditions. The final event was the USF Health Exhibicion Cultural, which was hosted by The WELL, the College of Nursing, and the Hispanic Association of Pharmacists. Artists from the Tampa Coalition of Hispanic Artists shared their cultural works of art and the stories behind them and invited attendees to share their artwork, cultural artifacts, and stories of their heritage as a part of our live cultural exhibition. These virtual events celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month were listed on the University Hispanic Heritage calendar, were approved by the USF Global Citizens Project, and were promoted at USF Health.

The College of Nursing worked collaboratively with USF Health to support the week-long Multicultural Fiesta, which was kicked off with a presentation from Dr. Cheyenne Currall, a seasoned global business executive and advisor and trusted corporate psychologist.

The week also included an IncrediBULL Race, where quests and clues were presented and participants competed for prizes. A dynamic Healthcare Panel of medical residents shared their practical experiences in cultural competency. The Week concluded with several “fan favorites:” the Cultural Bowl Trivia Competition and the Virtual Wine Tasting & Food Pairing Event with the Columbia Restaurant Group.

The theme, Celebrating Blackness, continued with author Dána-Ain Davis, Professor of Urban Studies at Queens College, serving as the keynote speaker where she presented on Obstetric Racism, Pregnancy & Premature Birth. The month-long series also included two movie nights streamed using “Netflix Party.” Both events, which featured movies/shows (Hidden Figures and Self-Made) created by Black directors and featuring Black actors, allowed participants to learn the accomplishments of notable Black figures in American History. These virtual events celebrating Black Heritage Month were listed on the University Black Heritage calendar, were approved by the USF Global Citizens Project, and were promoted at USF Health.

An Anti-Asian Discrimination Statement was issued in response to the Anti-Asian racism and violence occurring in the nation. We will continue to educate ourselves and celebrate our differences, with the ultimate goal of better serving our students and our diverse communities to achieve health equity.

The Chief Officer of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Action plan will guide the continued efforts of the Diversity Committee to promote and enhance a culturally and ethnically diverse student body, faculty, staff, and environment. Moreover, the Advising Team continued to work with Stampede into Bull Nursing, a USF Student Government Organization run by Upper Division Nursing students, to provide programming for our Freshman Nursing Pathway and pre-nursing students. In the 2020-21 academic year, programming included a welcome meeting where the different areas of nursing and the prelicensure program were discussed, a time management workshop, how to prepare applications to the college pathways, and collaboration with USF’s Career Services on interview preparation for those students applying to our prelicensure programs.

EDUCATIONAL DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

Additionally, the unit maintained recruitment offerings with budget constraints. Recruitment efforts included the Cleveland Clinic professional development fair, Bay Pines VA nursing education fair, USF Bulls Unite, USF Virtual Major Expo, USF Health HOSA Symposium, and the College of Nursing’s Virtual Admissions Fair presented by the Bull Nurse Admissions Team.

The College of Nursing continued to offer advising services to undergraduate students through the Archivum platform, which allowed students to choose a phone or Teams advising appointment. During this year, the Archivum scheduling system was modified with the option of virtual “drop-in” appointments that were utilized during add/drop weeks of the Fall and Spring semesters.

In total, College of Nursing advisors conducted 1,441 advising appointments for the 2020-21 academic year. To meet the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accreditation requirements, the College of Nursing transitioned from a BS in Nursing to a BSN. During the 2020-21 academic year, the College of Nursing awarded 505 BSN degrees.

As of this report, the Admissions Team conducted 265 walk-in advising sessions and 46 information sessions since July 2021. As of May 2021, information sessions consisted of two distinct formats to accommodate various stages of prospective students. One format is recorded, covering foundational admission requirements. The other format is a live, synchronous session facilitated by current nursing students on the Bull Nurse Admissions Team and moderated by the undergraduate admissions advisor, discussing nursing student experiences, expectations, norms, and preparedness.

The Student Affairs Office continued to deliver services in a virtual format during the global pandemic. The team pivoted and found a way to continue supporting students from the point of admission to graduation and beyond, despite the many challenges presented during the pandemic crisis.

The Nursing Living Learning Community, housed on the second floor of Juniper Hall, is a residential experience for USF College of Nursing students and is coordinated by the Student Affairs team at the College of Nursing. The residents, who are from diverse backgrounds, also include a mix of in-state and out-of-state students. Students in the Nursing Living Learning Community are provided a tutor for nursing prerequisite courses of Anatomy and Physiology I. Anatomy and Physiology II, Microbiology, and Human Nutrition. During the 2020-21 academic year, 124 hours of tutoring were offered to students and over 100 tutor-student interactions occurred.

During the 2020-21 academic year, the undergraduate academic advising team continued to provide professional development services. Because of the growing political/social discourse and increase in mental health stressors among students due to the pandemic, advisors took on additional professional development trainings to help educate themselves and remain a support for students, such as USF’s Enlightenment Series, events conducted by the Council for Academic Advising Multi-Cultural Academic Affairs Committee, and American College Personnel Association, Florida Academic Advising Association, and Council for Undergraduate Academic Advising conferences.

Recruitment efforts included the Cleveland Clinic professional development fair, Bay Pines VA nursing education fair, Sarasota Memorial Hospital education fair, College of Central Florida’s Graduate education fair, USF Health HOSA Symposium, and the College of Nursing’s Virtual Admissions Fair presented by the Bull Nurse Admissions Team. Although the Team initially had aimed to participate in a graduate recruitment event series with University of Florida Health, involving multiple in-person engagements from January through July 2021, the USF travel ban prevented our attendance due to the pandemic. For the first time, the Admissions Team executed a mass outreach to graduating BSN students from institutions within the Florida State University System, and we spoke with the College of Nursing’s undergraduate classes about graduate nursing programs.

At the conclusion of the Fall 2020 admission cycle, the Team participated in the inaugural Admissions Debrief meeting, which provided an optimal opportunity to reflect on processes and experiences that worked well and those with room for improvement. The Team set target enrollment numbers per degree level, concentration, and part-time/full-time classifications. Additionally, the Team implemented a more holistic applicant evaluation rubric that supported early admission offers for the highest qualified applicants, while stabilizing faculty effort in the interview stages. Furthermore, the Admissions Team now provides academic program plans with admission offers. As a result of impacts of the pandemic on the Fall 2021 admission cycle, some modifications to these improvements were necessary to respond to the applicant pools at hand while increasing volume.

During the past year, the Team was able to streamline many of the processes in the unit, including creation of digital surveys to collect needed information to fill out various forms and utilization of DocuSign to eliminate the need for multiple emails. At the time of this report, there were over 5,000 emails and 700 phone calls recorded.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

The USF graduate academic advisors continued to deliver stellar services to our graduate students. During this past year, the Advising Team onboarded close to 400 graduate students across all graduate programs. Additionally, the Graduate Advising Team continued to advise current graduate students. During pandemic restrictions, the Team utilized intrusive advising techniques and collaborated with the graduate faculty to ensure that graduate students were successful in their pursuit of education.

Advisors went above and beyond for students, often hosting meetings after work hours or working on weekends to meet the needs of graduate working students. The Team was quick to assist with many virtual Town Halls, including set up, promotion, recording, and assistance with questions.

From July 2020 until June 2021, the Team certified 289 students for graduation and assisted with completion of various forms requested by students, including Validation of Education forms and verification of education.

Since July 2020, the Team has conducted 24 live/synchronous information sessions. Information sessions took on a refreshed delivery format, which reduced the run time while covering basic admission requirements, and included Q&A discussion with current nursing students on the Bull Nurse Admissions Team and current graduate nursing faculty. Faculty have become increasingly involved in information sessions. The Team also facilitated 8 live/synchronous application workshops.

Application workshops eventually moved to a recorded video format for on-demand viewing. This was the first year to offer application workshops, which were implemented to meet the needs of prospective students challenged by the effects of the pandemic.

Being in a virtual environment created difficulties with student engagement, but the Student Affairs Team was able to successfully implement virtual orientations for incoming students and assist with virtual pinning ceremonies. Additionally, graduating students and local partners were able to participate in a virtual Career Expo. Some of the events that were hosted during the past year include: Undergraduate and graduate orientations, Doctoral student celebrations, Baccalaureate pinning ceremonies, Week of Welcome events, Get the Scoop (virtual recruitment event), and a Career Expo.

Student Awards • Nurse Anesthesia student, Matthew Jenkins, was recognized as the 2020 Tillman Scholar by the Pat Tillman Foundation.

• Nurse Anesthesia students, Helen “Liz” Rayburn and Sarah Swank, each received a $3,000 scholarship from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) Foundation.

• Nurse Anesthesia student, Seeta Spence Banfield was appointed by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists to serve as the student representative to the AANA’s education committee.

• PhD student, Maria Moreno, has been named one of the state’s McKnight Fellows.

• PhD nursing student, Angeline Saint Fleur, has been named one of the state’s McKnight Fellows.

• BSN student, Yaritza Hernandez-Lugo, received a $500 scholarship from the Foundation for Academic Nursing, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s (AACN) philanthropic arm, to help students facing hardships during the pandemic.

• BSN student, Danielle Myers, was named the Grad With Perfect Grades King O’Neal Scholar.

• BSN student, Anna Hopen, was the co-founder of the USF Young Innovator Competition. In 2020, she received her first patent for her prescription compliance invention.

• BSN student, Amber Miller, wrote the winning inscription for the oak tree dedication during the first USF Health Grad Week celebration. “Your ‘Why’ is the reason you are standing here today. It is your reason to stay grounded. It is your reason to adapt and overcome. Make it your foundation and you will grow to do great things.”

• The Nursing Student Council won Outstanding Student Organization Award with USF Health for the academic year.

• PhD student, Kailey Rinaldi, received a $500 Love of Learning Award from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. The award helps fund post-baccalaureate professional development for Phi Kappa Phi members.

• PhD student Tina Mason received the Oncology Nursing Society’s 2021 Excellence in Advanced Clinical Practice Award.

• V-CARE student, Kimberly Hoefer, received the Honor-A-Bull Award in the Health Sciences category. Student veterans were evaluated based on several criteria, including academics and the relationship between military service and student success.

The search for the Senior Associate Dean of Research concluded at the end of the academic year. Interviews have been completed, and final recommendations from the search committee have been submitted to the Dean, with a final decision soon announced.

Jennifer Kue, PhD, joined the College of Nursing as a Tenure Track Associate Professor in May 2021. Dr. Kue has over 20 years of experience working with refugees, immigrants, and medically underserved populations. Her research focus and expertise are in community health promotion, cancer prevention, community-engaged research, and refugee and immigrant health. Dr. Kue earned her PhD in public health from Oregon State University. From 2011 to 2012, she completed her postdoctoral fellowship in Behavioral Oncology at Arizona State University and the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center and from 2012 to 2013 she served as postdoctoral researcher in Behavioral Oncology at the Ohio State University College of Nursing and the James Comprehensive Cancer Center. She received her master’s degree in anthropology from San Diego State University and bachelor’s degree in visual communication and anthropology from the University of Idaho.

RESEARCH

Kelley Baumgartel, PhD, RN, joined the USF College of Nursing as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor in January 2021. Previously, Dr. Baumgartel served as an assistant professor at the Duquesne University School of Nursing since 2018. Her research examines whether maternal sleep and circadian patterns influence protective human milk factors, specifically oligosaccharides and milk microbiota. Dr. Baumgartel is also the founder and president of the Human Milk Science Institute and Biobank, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This nonprofit organization’s mission is to foster and advance research through the sharing of biological samples, data, and services. Dr. Baumgartel earned her PhD in nursing with a minor in healthcare genetics from the University of Pittsburgh in 2015. From 2015 to 2018, she completed postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania.

Stephanie Prescott, PhD, NNP-BC, RN, joined the USF College of Nursing as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor in July 2020. For the past 25 years, Dr. Prescott has been a neonatal educator and bedside nurse, previously serving as a neonatal nurse practitioner at Fairfax Neonatal Associates in northern Virginia from 2010 to when she joined the College of Nursing. In her new role, Dr. Prescott serves as the Assistant Director of the Biobehavioral Laboratory. Dr. Prescott earned her PhD as a genomic nursing scientist from the University of Virginia in May 2019. She also completed the Graduate Partnership Program at the National Institute of Nursing Research and her postdoctoral training at the National Cancer Institute in the Integrative Cancer Immunology Lab.

Dr. Cheedy Jaja is an associate professor in the College of Nursing at the University of South Carolina in Columbia and a board-certified Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. His eclectic education includes graduate degrees in public administration and policy, public health genetics, philosophy, political science, and clinical and translational science. He was the inaugural Pharmacogenetics, Ethics, and Public Policy Postdoctoral Fellow at the Indiana University School of Medicine. His research interests are sickle cell disease pain, analgesics, and psychopharmacogenetics.

The newly established Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) is a standing College of Nursing board formed in November 2020, consists of five highly trained and experienced board members, and is chaired by methodologist and professor, Dr. Laura Szalacha. Additional ad hoc members are added based on the expertise needed for the study under review. The members of the DSMB serve in an individual capacity and provide their expertise and recommendations. The DMSB is available to investigators outside the College of Nursing as needed and currently supports a study from Dr. Connie Visovsky titled “Home-Based Physical Activity Intervention for Taxane-Induced CIPN” in this reporting period. The DSMB also supports transdisciplinary collaboration, serving investigators in other USF health colleges.

The new Emerging Nurse Scientist Summer Fellowship at the College of Nursing provides an 8-week research experience for undergraduate nursing students, made possible by a generous donation from Mr. Charles C. Goff. The goal of the program is to encourage and support the training of undergraduate nursing students who are motivated to undertake careers in basic, clinical, and/or behavioral research. The first cohort consists of two undergraduate nursing students, Jaclyn Schwanemann and Jill Almond, who will work with faculty mentors Drs. Victoria Marshall and Stephanie Prescott. Fellows work with assigned individual mentors throughout the 8-week program of directed research experience, attend a CV workshop, participate in co-authoring at least one research publication, and complete a final presentation on their findings and experience during the program.

The primary responsibilities of the DSMB are (1) to periodically review and evaluate the accumulated study data for participant safety, study conduct and progress, and, when appropriate, efficacy, and (2) to make recommendations to principal investigators concerning the continuation, modification, or termination of the trial. The DSMB considers study-specific data as well as relevant background knowledge about the disease, test agent, or patient population under study. Prior to initiating any data review, the DSMB is responsible for defining its deliberative processes, including event triggers that would call for an unscheduled review, stopping procedures that are consistent with the protocol, unmasking (unblinding), and voting procedures. The DSMB reviews each protocol for any major concern prior to implementation. During the trial, the DSMB reviews cumulative study data to evaluate safety, study conduct, and scientific validity and integrity of the trial. As part of this responsibility, DSMB members must be satisfied that the timeliness, completeness, and accuracy of the data submitted to them for review are sufficient for evaluation of the safety and welfare of study participants. The DSMB also assesses the performance of overall study operations and any other relevant issues, as necessary. The DSMB concludes each review with their written recommendations to principal investigators as to whether the study should continue without change, be modified, or be terminated.

Biobehavioral Laboratory Consisting of over 2,000 dedicated square feet of space, the Biobehavioral Laboratory is located on the 3rd floor of the College of Nursing. It contains state-of-the art equipment for conducting blood assays, such as inflammatory markers, stress hormones, proteomics, and RNA and DNA analyses. The Laboratory also contains multiple patient rooms for conducting physical examinations, clinical measurements, and treatment interventions for healthcare and research purposes. The College is dedicated to the mission of the Biobehavioral Laboratory to further innovation and hands-on laboratory training of researchers specializing in synthesis science and has hired a new Assistant Director, Dr. Stephanie Prescott, to work with Director Dr. Maureen Groer, to carry out this mission. With appropriate risk mitigation measures in place, the Biobehavioral Laboratory was able to stay open and assist College of Nursing scientists with continuing their research initiatives.

In August 2020, Michelle Canale, DNP, CRNA, APRN, and Karla Maldonado, DrAP, CRNA, APRN, were appointed as Vice President and Director, respectively, to the 2020-2021 Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetists Board of Directors.

Allyson Duffy, PhD, RN, was appointed the Accelerated Second Degree Pathway Director for the St. Petersburg campus in February 2021, effective in Summer 2021.

In June 2020, Karla Maldonado, DrAP, CRNA, APRN, was the recipient of the Janice Drake CRNA Humanitarian Award.

In December 2020, Brittany Hay, DNP, APRN, ANPBC, FNP-BC, was presented the Inaugural DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty.

In May 2021, the College of Nursing, Port Tampa Bay, and Seafarer’s Center Board signed an agreement to allow the College to establish a clinical area at Port Tampa Bay. This agreement establishes the first on-site clinical area of this kind in the United States and will form the College’s base for a nurse-managed faculty practice.

Continuing Education REG I S TE R E D N U RSE FIRST ASSISTANT PR OGRA M In Fall 2020, the College collaborated with Tampa General Hospital to develop the Registered Nurse First Assistant program. This uniquely designed continuing education (CE) skills-based certificate program will launch in Fall 2021 and provide specialty certification and training for perioperative nurses to function as a first assistant in the operating room and practice beyond their normal scope of practice in the operating room. The pilot program was funded by Tampa General Hospital and will include four students.

REG U LA R LY S C H EDULED SERIES & CE ON - DE MA ND WE BINA RS The College of Nursing provides faculty development opportunities through its Nursing Continuing Education Lecture Series. These educational events occur twice a month and provide CE credit to academic and clinical nurses. Additionally, in Fall 2020, the College launched its first enduring materials platform, also known as CE On Demand.

The 2020-21 academic year featured one live and four on-demand mandatory re-licensure lectures as well as topics ranging from the impact of parental military service on military-connected children to the impacts of COVID-19 on nursing education. Approximately 300 participants attended the Lecture Series, and 175 participants were awarded CE credit.

In December 2020, thanks to Sarasota philanthropists David Kotok and Christine Schlesinger, the College launched an educational online webinar and podcast series, “Frontline Nursing During COVID-19: A New Paradigm,” to help prepare new and experienced nurses to advocate for their safety and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the first external complementary online educational activity offered through the College. Frontline Nursing During COVID-19: A New Paradigm had 736 international participants from 4 countries. 569 contact hours were issued. The Frontline Nursing Podcast had global listeners with more than 1,000 downloads from 5 different continents.

In Summer 2020, the College created a Virtual Health Fair on the COVID-19 pandemic featuring nursing faculty and students and received funding to develop the Summer Institute for School Nurses on Mental Health and Behavioral Issues. In Spring 2021, the College assisted Mort Elementary with their Community Partnership School Accreditation by providing Health Education Webinars. In Summer 2021, the College assisted HCPS with their annual Summer Institute, focusing on sexual health education.

EDUCATIONAL DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

The College of Nursing collaborates with its clinical partners to develop and evaluate fellowships for advanced practice providers to increase the number of specialty-trained practitioners with the competency necessary to deliver high-quality, evidence-based, and safe patient care. In Fall 2020, the College and its affiliate partners graduated three advanced practice provider fellows from neurosurgery, otolaryngology, and oncology who have been hired into gainful employment. The USF Otolaryngology Department and Moffitt Cancer Center are now actively recruiting new fellows for the 2021-22 academic year.

Advanced Practice Provider Fellowships

RESEARCH

In August 2020, the Office of Faculty Affairs and Human Resources launched a program for professional development. There were seven Coffee and Conversation events held from September 2020 to June 2021 on topics relevant to professional development. In addition, the Dean funded the Staff Council Executive Board to offer a skill development opportunity: Team Building with CliftonStrengths. Ultimately, 91% of administrative professionals engaged with at least one opportunity and sessions with a national executive coach.

Justine Nandkishorelal received the Outstanding Undergraduate Advising Award, which recognizes professional advisors who have demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate advisement during the year.

Ashley Ross, Admission Recruiter and Advisor, received the USF Employee of the Year Award.

Ashley Ross and Xavier Ramos, Admissions Recruiters and Advisors, received the USF Outstanding Staff Team Award.

The communications and marketing team led by Jessica Samaniego received the Silver Award in the 2021 Case District III Institutional Awards under the category: Communications Pivot for “Pivoting in a Pandemic: How Communications Can Re-envision New Traditions.”

Community Outreach L EAD E R S I N C A RE GRANTS The College has developed three “Leaders in Care” grants, funded by contributions from nursing alumni and donors, for community-based projects that expand service-learning opportunities for students.

PED S TO S U C C E ED The Peds to Succeed program is a three-year program developed in partnership with the Tampa Police Department, which provides nursing students opportunities to evaluate children with asthma, diabetes, and chronic and complex conditions during their pediatric and community health rotations.

During academic year 2020-21, the College provided STEM projects to the R.I.C.H. House children, giving the children hands-on activities to encourage original thought and improve cognitive learning. During Winter 2020, the College developed a virtual Angel Tree and provided the children with much-needed computers, blankets, sweatshirts, and gifts. In Spring 2021, the children requested to start a book club focused on equality and justice, so the College provided a series of books related to tolerance, injustice, equality, and children with disabilities. Although this is the final year of the grant, the program will be sustained through a tie-in with the concurrent undergraduate courses.

EN R I C H E D FA M I LIES – SULPHUR SPRING S NE IGHBORHOOD OF PROMIS E The EnRICHed Families grant was also developed in a partnership with the Tampa Police Department and dovetails with Peds to Succeed to expand health and wellness outreach to the parents and grandparents in the Sulfur Springs and Robles Park communities.

The program allows clinical nurse practitioner students opportunities to evaluate older adults with chronic and complex conditions.

The College provided biometric screenings, healthcare education, and a health fair where nursing faculty and students provided health education outreach and biometric screenings to the families.

SU P P O R TI N G H EALTHY INFECTION PREVENTION PRA CTICE S The Supporting Healthy Infection Prevention Practices (SHIPP) Grant provides outreach to Port Tampa Bay in navigating the COVID-19 pandemic as well as funding for a clinical area within the Port Tampa Bay Seafarer’s Center, ensuring that infection control standards are supported and providing health and wellness programs for seafarers.

In Fall 2020, the College assisted with a return-to-work webinar, discussing COVID-19 guidelines and safety measures, which were distributed internally to Port employees and shared with stakeholders. Additionally, the College provided COVID-19 screenings and coordination of social distancing measures at the Port’s fishing tournament. In Spring 2021, College faculty and students provided COVID-19 screenings and immunizations to workers at the Port, with work extended to the on-site clinic.

WHO LE S O M E C O M M UNITY M INISTRIES Wholesome Community Ministries (WCM) collaborates with the College to improve the heath, wellness, and life experiences of South Hillsborough County residents.

In March 2021, with a signed and executed contract, the College partnered with Riviera Beach Integrated Care to rotate family nurse practitioner and adult-gerontology nurse practitioner students as needed for clinical experiences. Rivera Beach Integrated Care is a full-service primary care clinic in Palm Beach County, Florida that includes services from early detection for diabetes, heart disease, and stroke to on-site pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, and imaging services.

The College also held a health fair with WCM where 5 faculty and 10 students practiced their medical Spanish, conducted health screens, checked blood pressures, and administered vaccines to the underserved families in Wimauma. Families again received bags of nonperishable foods and household supplies, donated by Publix, and the College donated a basket of infant supplies and Publix gift cards.

In academic year 2020-21, the College partnered with WCM to provide COVID-19 relief for underserved families in Wimauma, Florida.

Approximately 1,000 families received bags of nonperishable food and household supplies. Feeding America also provided fresh produce for each family.

SALVATI O N A R M Y In April 2021, the Tampa Salvation Army reached out through Hiram Green to discuss a possible collaboration. The Salvation Army has about 25 “respite” beds for people being discharged from local hospitals without a home. Hospitals, such as Tampa General Hospital, provide home healthcare for those they discharge. With Salvation Army clients in need of health education and health screening, the Salvation Army agreed to become a clinical practice site for the College, providing needed experience for the College’s undergraduate students in community and public health clinical courses. The contract is under negotiation with the national office in Atlanta.

FL O R I D A D E P A R TM ENT OF HEALTH In Spring 2021, the College partnered with the Florida Department of Health to provide assessments of long-term care facilities, contact tracing, COVID-19 testing, and vaccinations to the citizens of Hillsborough County. Thirteen DNP and Master of Science in nursing students conducted on-site or remote infection prevention and control assessments and delivered oral feedback to the long-term care facilities as part of the county-wide response team. A written response was shared with individual long-term care facilities, including recommendations, links to training and resources, and Department of Health contact information. Twenty-three students participated in the contact tracing opportunity with faculty oversight. In addition, many students, alumni, and faculty participated in the Department of Health-led community events to vaccinate residents in underserved areas of Tampa.

C O V I D - 1 9 I N I TI ATIVES The College is a large part of the university’s healthcare workforce who test and vaccinate members of the community, including patients at Morsani Center clinics and students who attend the Student Health Services at USF. Additionally, the College held four vaccine clinics in the College’s Gathering Space, and 24 undergraduate students vaccinated over 200 students, staff, and faculty under the supervision of faculty.

The Educational Design & Technology (EDT) team for the USF College of Nursing is composed of credentialed educators and digital experts in instructional design and delivery. EDT helps faculty create rich learning experiences and supports staff with their initiatives by applying research and best practices and using proven strategies through their offered services. Some examples of projects the EDT team has completed include the following:

Service to College of Nursing Faculty and Staff EDT supports the College of Nursing with use of educational technologies. The EDT team employed various strategies to identify the needs within the College and developed resources to meet those needs. This included enhancing their current services, contributing to the monthly Academic Affairs Bulletin, serving on committees, offering 14 webinars, and creating numerous instructional resources. On average, 26 people attended the webinars and topics, which included using Microsoft Teams, Canvas, and teaching and learning pedagogy.

In addition to training, EDT provides direct assistance to faculty and staff who have issues related to educational technologies. To ensure needs are met, the EDT has leveraged technology to present information via multiple channels of communication (including through chat, webinars, council meetings, and email). The most common technologies that EDT has supported have included Canvas, Microsoft Teams, Blackboard Collaborate, Proctorio, and Turnitin. As the Team expanded their offerings, they sought out scholarship as an additional way to contribute to the mission and goals of the College. The Team has supported faculty and staff in these endeavors and has been involved in 12 abstract/poster submissions, publications, and conference presentations.

In Summer 2020, the EDT reimagined their team and services by widening the scope of services and developing a website to provide a front-facing resource for the College. The Menu of Services provides faculty and staff à la carte opportunities. Some of these new opportunities have included eLearning development (including infographics, podcasts, and consultative services) and training and development (including webinars and learning strategy consultations). The Team also leveraged Design Tools, a product of Cidi Labs, and developed a refreshed and elevated homepage template for all Canvas courses. The new and improved homepage was launched with the Spring 2021 courses.

Although all in-person alumni events were cancelled after March 2020, the College was still able to host several events. Additionally, some changes were made to the Alumni website, with more planned to support engagement. The following were held in support of alumni engagement:

COVID-19 Alumni Volunteers The College of Nursing began offering alumni the opportunity to volunteer alongside our faculty and students at COVID-19 initiatives during the Spring 2021 semester. Over 20 alumni indicated interest in participating in these opportunities. In order to qualify, interested alumni completed a module and quiz about the Pfizer vaccine, submitted their nursing licenses, and completed a USF volunteer application as required by Volunteer Services. Prior to USF cancelling all study abroad travel, one College of Nursing student was able to travel with an interprofessional group to Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). After USF cancelled all in-person study abroad travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the College of Nursing pivoted focus to virtual experiences for students. Virtual Study Abroad Sites during academic year 2020-21 were planned between the College of Nursing and Colombia at Colombia (Universidad del Norte [UNINORTE]), and the United Kingdom at Exeter University, England, and the University of Stirling, Scotland.

The College of Nursing aspires that global opportunities for our nursing students and faculty be optimized, streamlined, and provide outstanding opportunities for learning, professional advancement, and research. The College has several active global partners in Central America and the United Kingdom that engage undergraduate students both virtually and in person, when safe to do so. The existing and new collaborations allow faculty to engage in global research opportunities; the College aspires to expand those opportunities as faculty seek global partners whose research areas help establish the College of Nursing as a leader in global nursing research.

GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT

USF Health’s Global Health Student Conversations and USF Health’s Global Health Conversations The College of Nursing was among the first to host Student Conversations, which are aimed at students and providers.

• Dr. Ivonne Hernandez hosted a conversation entitled “The Pregnancy Journey and Childbirth Experience: Sharing Cross-cultural Perspectives of the US, Colombia, & Mexico” on November 24, 2020. Nursing students from the College of Nursing and UNINORTE, along with medical students from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), participated in this lively discussion. Attendance included 25 students and 3 faculty.

• Dr. Yolanda Torres hosted a conversation entitled “Home-based Care for Chronically Ill Patients and Their Families in Times of a Pandemic.” Nursing students from the College of Nursing, UNINORTE, University of Texas, San Antonio, and University of Puerto Rico, as well as medicine and physical therapy students from UNAM, participated in this dynamic discussion. Attendance included 27 students and 5 faculty.

• Dr. Barbara Smith hosted a Global Health Conversation for providers entitled “The Impact of COVID-19 On Health Care Workers Globally” with reports from Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and South East Asia. The Conversation was moderated by Dr. Yolanda Torres.

• USF Health International also hosted a series called “In their Words,” where students interviewed faculty regarding the COVID-19 global pandemic. Two College of Nursing faculty were interviewed: Dr. Sharlene Smith with Anne Baptiste and Dr. Elizabeth Jordan with Zareena Shafi.

Activities with Coverdell Fellows During the 2020 Fiscal Year Two fellows graduated in August 2020, both of whom participated in events held at the Wholesome Community Church in Wimauma, Florida for immigrant children.

During academic year 2020-21, two new fellows started. They have volunteered with USF Health Service Corps and with the Senior Friendship Center in Manatee County, which serves the elderly. They have also participated in a USF Health International program that interviews former Peace Corps volunteers and collaborators in Lesotho and Tanzania.

COVID-19 restrictions have limited many volunteer hours.
