1973 Five mobile classrooms, 4,000 square feet, comprise the college

1975 In June 1975, 41 students earned their bachelor’s degree in nursing. Students completed clinical hours at Tampa General Hospital, Hillsborough County Hospital, Tampa Veterans Hospital, or with one clinical affiliate. In this class, 8 percent were male, and 5 percent reported ethnic diversity.

Joining the AAU is a tremendous milestone as it formalizes USF’s position as a leading research university. Founded in 1956, the university has rapidly evolved into a global powerhouse that transforms lives through education, research, and innovation.

USF, with campuses in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Sarasota-Manatee, is the first public university in Florida to be invited to join the AAU in nearly 40 years and is now one of only two institutions from the State University System of Florida to serve as an AAU member.

NRC Makes USF College of Nursing Home

USF Expansion Welcomes FCN

The National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Education has a new home at the USF College of Nursing.

Under the direction of Kristine Gauthier, PhD, MPH, PNP-BCPC, the center continues to enhance and maintain the health and safety performance standards compiled in Caring for Our Children Program (CFOC). In addition to her leadership of the NRC, Gauthier is an associate professor and primary care pediatric nurse practitioner concentration director for the USF College of Nursing.

The Florida Center for Nursing (FCN) will now be housed at USF College of Nursing, under the direction of Executive Director Rayna Letourneau, PhD, RN and in partnership with the Florida Nurses Association. The FCN will enable Florida to monitor supply and demand in the nursing workforce, a critical element of understanding and dealing with the nursing shortage.

NURSING EXPANSION Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis approved $33 million in the FY 2022-23 budget for the USF College of Nursing to expand its infrastructure on USF’s Tampa campus with enhanced simulation training space.

In addition, Gov. DeSantis approved $6.9 million in recurring funding for the college to hire faculty and staff.

By 2028, the USF College of Nursing will graduate over 750 undergraduate nursing students each year, a roughly 200% increase over the five-year period. Through extensive partnerships with local and regional hospitals and health care systems, the college can provide practice-based training and confidently route new graduates to employment, fulfilling the critical need for nurses in Florida.

TRAILBLAZING PARTNERSHIPS The Florida Board of Governors approved two Linking Industry to Nursing Education (LINE) proposals to enhance collaboration between the USF College of Nursing and Johns Hopkins All Children’s Foundation and Moffitt Cancer Center.

The USF College of Nursing will provide nursing students on the St. Petersburg campus with access to high-fidelity simulation training. This is the first time in the history of the college that this simulation training will be provided in St. Petersburg.

Nursing students will practice in the Johns Hopkins All Children’s state-of-the-art simulation center.

USF College of Nursing will increase access to new, high-quality simulation activities for students learning to care for oncology patients by bringing modern high-fidelity equipment into the simulation laboratory for students across all three campuses.

This immersive and dynamic teaching-learning environment replicates clinical scenarios in the lab and allows for a seamless transition to practice opportunities for USF students and Moffitt nurse residents through shared space and experiential activities.

GLOBAL REACH New Sicilian Partnerships

Barranquilla, Colombia

In the fall of 2022, the college signed general agreements of understanding (GAUs) with nursing programs at the Kore University of Enna and the University of Catania, providing greater opportunities for global exchanges for faculty and students for training, internships, research endeavors, and professional development.

Eighteen USF nursing students spent 10 days in Barranquilla for a Global Public Health Nursing Clinical through a partnership with Uninorte: Universidad del Norte Colombia. Together, USF and Uninorte faculty designed and planned specific curriculum focusing on addressing global health issues across the two countries and languages. Students provided nursing care to reduce the risk of disease and injury while promoting health and wellness across diverse populations.

MO-BULL NURSE MEDICAL CLINIC Addressing Access to Health Services Many people in the United States are unable to receive needed health care because it is not accessible or available nearby.

Mobile health clinics can improve health by providing health care to people where they live and where they work. These clinics can also play a key role in preparing future nurses and health care providers by providing expanded clinical learning

The College of Nursing Going “Mo-Bull” for Clinicals Through a four-year grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (award number UK1HP46068), the USF College of Nursing launched the Mo-Bull Nurse Medical Clinic. Complete with two exam rooms, a bathroom, a freezer, and a pop-up awning, the clinic is staffed with two advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), a patient care coordinator, faculty preceptors, and serves as a clinical training site for undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Starting in year two, rotation opportunities will be available to interprofessional teams of students at USF Health.

The project will be guided by a Community Advisory Board that will meet twice a year.

opportunities such as high-quality culturally sensitive care in community-engaged settings, identifying and understanding Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) in local communities and integrating SDOH into the plan of care, and facilitating a collaborative inter-professional team approach to care.
