University of San Agustin (USA) officially welcomes all its students from the different departments to the Academic Year 2023-2024 through the celebration of Pangabi-abi
University Orientation 2023 at the University Gymnasium, September 4.
kkA historic flag-raising ceremony, participated by the Senior High School department was done at Plaza de San Agustin in the morning of September 4, before the start of Pangabi-abi 2023, where this particular flagpole was last used decades ago, making this ceremony a more memorable one
kk“This flagpole was last used I think 3 or 4 decades ago, thus, this ceremony is a day worth to be remembered and written in history”, states Rev Fr Frederick Comendador OSA, university president
This university - wide celebration gathered students from elementary to college to become part of the crowd while also providing a live stream on the university’s Facebook page for those who could not make it face-toface
Pangabi-abi 2023 featured the talented students of the different departments in a half-day program packed with singing and dancing performances from Unistarz Kawilihan-USA, and the USA Choir and Troubadours
“Today’s event is really enjoyable since in my past school, I didn’t get to experience this kind of event where everyone gathers in one place due to the limited capacity of our school gym,” says Miguel Roque, a grade 11 student
The crowd was then more hyped when Rev Fr Jonas Mejares, one of the university friars, took over the stage and gave an exclusive rock performance with a ‘Bamboo’ medley accompanied by the Primo Band
“Excited na gid ko sa future
events sang school kay subong pa lang daw na-hype na gid ko ” Roque added
Furthermore, the USA Student Government also demonstrated how to wear school uniforms through a runway featuring students from several departments dressed in their designated school uniforms
“Pangabi-abi sets the score as to what it truly feels like not just to be an Augustinian, but to be with Augustinians On behalf of the LSG, the event was a success Thanks to a fruitful coordination with SAWO, the event bore true with its aim to orient, inform, educate, and entertain the Augustinian youth by combining culture, education, and policy ” states Jhazper Gelvezon Dela Cruz, LSG Governor of SHS, in an interview

As face-to-face classes started last August 14, the start of the new school year 2023-2024 was met with a surge of new clubs and organizations established by the faculty of the Senior High
School department of the University of San Agustin during Frosh Day, held at the University Gymnasium.
Among the notable additions to the department’s roster of organizations tailored to fit the diverse students of the university are the Multimedia and Arts Club, IWAG Pinoy, HUMSS Society, Association of Business Executives, and the English Language and Literary Arts Club
“In good faith, the organizations brought back, or best, to those created from scratch this year, were developed with the intent to develop a community that is bonded not by competition, but by love an Augustinian value that we aim to cherish more than anything to establish harmony in a world where one tongue differs from the next,” said Jhazper Dela Cruz, the current senior high school’s local governor
In addition to the newly formed clubs, old clubs and organizations that once halted during the pandemic resurfaced once again now that face-to-face classes resumed, namely Circulus Scientiam Peer Facilitators Organization, Red Cross Youth, and Math Circle
“Last year, these clubs were not around which has limited our opportunities as SHS students And now that these have already returned, I think this year will be a memorable one since multiple clubs will be having their events exclusive for the department,” says Paul Lusanta a grade 12 student

‘ANG[GULO]’ BAGS BEST PICTURE AT SINE AGUSTINO 2024
After a four - year hiatus, Sine Agustino, the University of San Agustin's Official Film Fes/Festival, is back once again, offering students an in-person film-viewing experience on February 27, 2024
In line with this year's theme, "Silk Screen Stories: Exploring Asian Cinema", films from different departments; COT, CPMT, SHS, CLASE, CNND, and COC, were shown showcasing their artistry and storytelling prowess enabling them to craft a cinematic experience, evoking laughter, tears, empathy, and introspection
Lights shine undoubtedly for “ANG[GULO]”, an official film entry of the senior high school (SHS) department, as it bags multiple awards and recognition in the awarding night of the competition, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Poster, Best Editing and Sound, and Best Teaser
It follows the story of Gaius, a fresh graduate of BS Architecture who dwells on mental health problems causing him to lock inside his room and paint continuously without considering other things including his health and appearance
Portrayed by Jon Evan Terence Yorac, his effective acting landed him on top as he won the Best Actor Award He shared “Winning the Best Actor Award for Sine Agustino 2024 was a milestone for me because it made me realize how big my love for acting is I’ve always wanted to make the audience feel and see through every character's eyes and winning the award made me want to continue to stay true to my craft ”
The film also starred Howen Peter Baticados, portraying Neo’s character, who not only supported Gaius’s character but also reminded him to continue living life and make the most out of it despite facing lots of challenges along the way

University of San AgustinSenior High School faculty and students display the core value of Unitas and Caritas at Brgy Lanit Proper, Jaro, Iloilo, as they conduct the “Regalo Agustino” project on March 9, 2024
Headed by the SHS SACEO - Tilipunan, in collaboration with the SHS Local Government, HUMSS Society, and SHS MMAC, this one-day gift-giving program aims to provide one morning full of enjoyment to the daycare pupils of the barangay, as well as assess what further measures will be done to help the community
“As a method actor, preparing for Neo was the biggest challenge I’ve faced during the pre-production and production of ANG[GULO] Not only have I immersed myself in Gaius’s character but with Jet’s as well When I received the script, I knew it had the potential and substance to inspire people Which is why I helped in giving the film life, and brought Neo to life ” says Baticados, when asked what challenges he faced as the production carried on
Moreover, the success of the film was not only because of the actors acting on-screen, but also because of the collective effort put in by everyone behind the cameras The exceptional dedication of the team, both crew and actors, made the film come to life and be on par with other films from the different colleges
“I i iti ll i d
I, myself, can say that writing a 15-minute short film isn’t my forte We had so many problems shooting the film that we called our plan B as “Back Out” because we had very limited time, limited resources, and had zero budget Amidst the challenges, we found a way to create something from scratch I reworked ANG[GULO] into a 3-setting film to make the production and postproduction easier, while still ensuring to captivate and move audiences ” says Bryant Padasay, assistant director and writer of ANG[GULO], in a statement
Indeed the pride of the SHS department, ANG[GULO] serves as a reminder that on a path to self-discovery, one must navigate the world through their own canvas while embracing colors of imperfection
“The film was very touching d b tif ll d K d t

Different activities were prepared by the volunteers which included storytelling, face painting, playing games, and eating snacks, wherein the daycare pupils enjoyed doing so A gift bag and school supplies were also handed out to the parents and their children as an appreciation for their effort in participating in this project
“The Augustinian spirit is always there especially unity, which is one of the core values of an Augustinian, while I’m very glad as well that we have students participating in the activity because it is very important to establish the unity of everyone,” Sir Jose Allan Cordero quoted, one of the teachers present in the project
Furthermore, while the pupils are enjoying the activities, teachers of the USA - SHS conducted an interview to the parents on what are the needs of their children and how they raise them to become a good member of the community
“Today's activity was super successful because I can see the faces of everyone that is really enjoying the activities that we give to them, especially seeing the parents enjoy together with their kids,” Ma’am Anne Nariele Artieda said, one of the SHS SACEO-Tilipunan advisers

POLITICAL WORLD
ERROLLJOHNSEPAYA
A CLASH BETWEEN CORRUPTED DYNASTIES
The recent political turmoil in the Philippines marked by the public feud between former President Rodrigo Duterte and current President Ferdinand Marcos Jr is a striking example of the adage, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely ” On January 28, 2024, Duterte accused Marcos of being a drug addict, to
vehicles to support their families and cover their daily expenses It is additionally anticipated that 3 out of 4 jeeps or about 75% of all jeepneys will lose their franchise Drivers of traditional jeepneys would reportedly have the ability to purchase modern jeepneys with the help of government loans and payment plans The loan would be charged to the driver over 7 years at 6% interest and 5% equity Having said that a new jeepney costs between ₱1 6 million and ₱2 4 million, drivers would need to make between ₱6 000 and ₱7 000 per day to afford one Then hypothetically, in this regard, the modernization program would just lead the drivers to accrue more debt
The primary matter that the administration consistently brings up in discourse is the hazardous fumes from deteriorating jeepneys that have festered in our atmosphere If that’s the primary concern, then one couldn’t help but question why we are focusing on the small sectors, like the traditional jeepneys, which have been a part of the Philippines’ culture and national image for over 78 years, rather than the large number of factories and corporations that contribute significantly to air pollution Additionally, it should be noted that only 2% of all registered vehicles in the country are traditional jeepneys This indicates that if modernization efforts were directed toward private vehicles instead, there may be a greater chance of reducing air pollution and emissions Furthermore, private vehicle
owners would probably have the financial means to modernize their automobiles more than jeepney drivers
The unchangeable appearance of the once referred to as the undisputed King of the Road, which may be seen belching down roads or incursions or catching attention when adorned in kitschy decorations, ensures that it remains forever profound in the Philippines despite attempts at burial For as long as there are Filipinos, the traditional jeepneys will always represent something distinctive about our culture and ought to be revered for one’s life
which Marcos retorted by claiming Duterte was under the influence of fentanyl
This clash has caused a rift between the two powerful families revealing a deeper political game at play The Dutertes, wielding significant influence in Mindanao are pushing for Marcos’s resignation, while the Marcoses maintain control over Luzon As a student journalist and citizen, it is imperative to recognize that this conflict is not just a familial dispute but a threat to the nation’s stability and democracy
The Marcos and Duterte families have differing goals and opinions that further deepen their rift
775% 5%
Marcos’s intention to amend the 1987 constitution, created to prevent a repeat of his father's dictatorship, is seen by the Dutertes as a ploy to extend his power
Conversely the Duterte administration is scrutinized for its past extrajudicial killings and mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which left the country with massive debt Despite the controversies surrounding both families, it is clear that their actions serve their interests rather than the Filipino people’s The ongoing power struggle highlights the failures of democracy in the Philippines, calling into question the suitability of these families to lead the nation
Filipinos must remain vigilant and discerning about the news they consume, avoiding the trap of taking sides in this political feud. instead the focus should be on the country's welfare and future The true adversaries are not differing beliefs or ideals but leaders who prioritize personal gain over public service It is crucial for the Filipino people to stand united against such governance, advocating for a leadership that genuinely seeks national prosperity and the betterment of future generations

THE COMPLEX INTERPLAY OF RELIGIOUS DOCTRINES AND MODERN IDENTITY POLITICS IN THE PHILIPPINES
The Philippines has developed a reputation as one of the most accepting Asian countries for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people It is notable given the dominance of Catholicism, which has had a complicated history with non-heteronormative sexual and gender identities Yet LGBTQ+ Filipinos have carved out spaces for themselves even within the church institutions, sometimes taking on salient functions for spreading the faith As such,
the Philippines exemplifies the tensions and the gradual reconciliation between traditional religious doctrine and contemporary concepts of gender and sexuality
The country stands out for nurturing acceptance, and prejudice, conflict, and harmony between church teachings and modern identity politics
The campaign for LGBTQ+ equality in the Philippines has made strides in recent times through heightened visibility, new legal protections, and growing social acceptance A recent opinion poll shows a solid majority of Filipinos now express acceptance towards homosexuality in their society Specifically, 73% of Filipino respondents voiced support for social acceptance of homosexuality, according to a 2020 study by the Pew Research Center Notably, attitudes have remained steadily supportive at the
same high level since this polling first began tracking views in 2013 However, discrimination remains entrenched, impacting millions globally and nationally Support within the LGBTQ+ community itself, especially among youth, shows fragility at times Prejudice often originates within one’s own family, as traditionalist relatives condemn gender and sexual nonconformity among younger generations through neglect, physical punishment, and incessant derogatory speech In Philippine schools, queer students face discriminatory attitudes from peers, teachers, and staff; rigidly enforcing policies on dress codes and comportment creates additional burdens A 2019 survey by Social Weather Stations revealed telling complexities underlying Filipino attitudes, with 60% of respondents acknowledging that discrimination exists against the LGBTQ+ community and 55% supporting legislating rights protections However, reservations emerged regarding extending acceptance specifically to transgender people Results showed nearly half of those surveyed (47%) opposed allowing transgender individuals to use femaledesignated bathrooms Similarly, 48% rejected transgender persons’ right to update government identification documents like birth certificates to align with their gender identity These responses likely reflect deeply ingrained gender norms and assumptions
The effects of such systemic discrimination prove severe,
WHYDOESSOCIALMEDIAHAVEADETRIMENTAL IMPACTONFILIPINOSTUDENTS?
After about eight years of daily internet use, I must say just how crippling the internet is to me There is no denying the impact of the creation of the internet, not just to students but to everyone, as I am a regular user of it and it has played a major part in everything that I do now Let’s face it; when was the last time anyone has ever gone to the library? And no I didn't mean sitting there and gossiping, but reading without it being compulsory Since its creation in 1995 the number of users has skyrocketed to over five billion internet users from 16 million 28 years ago This equates to a staggering 68% of the total world population
In today's digital age, social media has become an integral part of the lives of students, even more so during the coronavirus outbreak, leaving
with wide-ranging consequences Isolation from social and familial support networks frequently results Mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and substance abuse disorders, have been extensively documented at disproportionately high rates among LGBTQ+ populations compared to heterosexual peers by researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Finally, barriers to accessing both standard healthcare and targeted services exacerbate the challenges of thriving as an LGBTQ+ person
It may be why Sen Risa Hontiveros, who developed the Senate version of the Sexual Orientation Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE) bill in the 18th Congress, has stated that she will lead the effort to approve the SOGIE bill in the upcoming 19th Congress Hontiveros emphasized that the draft law is consistent with the spirit of the Constitution, ensuring safe schools, accessible health care, and a sufficient livelihood for more Filipinos
“It is time we begin the process of healing the wound created by the gap in our laws that has allowed for bullying, ostracism, and violence to way too many Filipinos It is time we forge a country that includes all, loves all,” she added
In recent years, Philippine policymakers and education administrators have recognized the gravity of bullying targeting LGBTQ+ students and have instituted reforms In 2012, the Department of Education enacted its Child Protection Policy This sweeping measure works to curtail bullying and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, alongside other
factors Additionally, in 2013, Congress passed special AntiBullying legislation with explicit protections, including LGBTQ+ youth Such laws and enforcement efforts signal that harassment and mistreatment in schools will meet zero tolerance by opening school doors wider to gender and sexual minorities
Policies nonetheless still require vigorous implementation and monitoring to translate parchment promises into accurate safety and support
Though progress has ensconced, the reality on campuses across the Philippines may still, at times, severely test LGBTQ+ children and teenagers simply seeking to learn without fear
The path to equality and inclusion for LGBTQ+ Filipinos has encountered both incremental victories and stubborn barriers Still, tireless advocates light the way forward Step-by-step, detailed educational guidelines and legal protections can slowly erode longstanding prejudices if vigorously championed The principles shine clear; no youth deserves discrimination or bullying due to sexual orientation or gender identity
All young people need support to safely develop pride in their identity, whatever societal or religious norms dictate
The Philippines has come far but still has far to go for the LGBTQ+ community to enjoy the full dignity and justice innate to every human life As the nation continually unravels generations of engrained persecution, seeds planted through current policy changes could blossom into greater compassion The time has come for this country to untangle a legacy of persecution and fully embrace inclusion
UNSEEN DIGITAL SHADOWS
students with no option to go back to school at risk of contracting the virus It has become the main medium of communication and information nowadays, with just one click, everything you want is provided to you
Yet, behind the glossy filters and endless scrolling lies a darker reality or should I say, a dark web, of the corrosive impact of social media on Filipino students
At first glance, the idea of the internet as a social paradise where it is a space for self-expression and communication may seem enticing, however, it is to note that this view is idealist and self-expression does not only foster positivity but also creates a means for negativity to fester This negativity that disguises itself as “selfexpression” takes a toll on
anyone’s mental health, even more so on students as they are susceptible to mental health issues due to a teen’s rational part of their brain not being fully developed The relentless pursuit of likes and validation breeds a culture of comparison and self-doubt, as young minds measure their worth against their peers
The internet serves as a breeding ground for the prevalence of cyberbullying and online harassment, as the anonymity of the Internet emboldens individuals to engage in hurtful behavior
they might not exhibit in faceto-face interactions Filipino students, particularly adolescents, are vulnerable
targets, facing insults, threats, and ridicule that can have devastating effects on their self-esteem and mental well-being Social media is an unfiltered space of boundless information, Everything is good but in moderation
While using social media, it is important to embody our three Augustinian Values Unitas, Caritas, and Veritas, in everything that we do Before we click, think Before we post, pause Before we comment, comprehend

But amidst the excitement of learning there's still this constant anticipation for recess, a much-needed break The cafeteria in the Dolce Garcia Hall, however, is worlds away, tucked at the end of a labyrinth of stairs from the higher floors of the Aguirre Hall and it is in times like this where we all start ranting about when the long-awaited elevator will finally be operational But despite the distance, of course, I still need to satisfy my cravings and my hungry stomach Then after-
wards the multiple flights of stairs await us again on the way back to the classroom The elevator should really be done soon
Now back to another round of learning, time feels so long to pass But when the bell finally rings for lunch, I can’t help but give a sigh of relief The journey to the cafeteria proves to be arduous once again, so much so, that sometimes I can't help but just want to sleep inside the classroom for the entirety of the period With the chaos that ensues inside the crowded cafeteria it shows a stark contrast to the structured atmosphere of the classroom And as the lunch period ends, another round of learning begins
A much harder version, that is It's back to the grind as we tackle the remaining hours of the school day Imagine five hours of classes straight, no breaks at all And the unavoidable sleepiness in the afternoon just makes it more challenging Yet with the teacher’s enthusiasm and hard work in teaching, the feeling of sleepiness easily washes away With focused determination, we dive back into our studies the afternoon passing in a blur of lectures discussions and group activities The anticipation of the final bell grows with each passing minute, driving us to stay engaged and attentive until the very end As the clock finally ticks to dismissal some make plans to hang out with friends, some still have practices and other extracurricular activities and responsibilities to attend to, and some just plan to head home directly to take a rest like me
With the first light of dawn giving way to the frenetic energy of the day, each moment as a senior high school student at the University of San Agustin is filled with anticipation and adventure From the lively walk to school to the whirlwind of learning inside the classroom, every experience shapes us into resilient, knowledgeseeking individuals Despite the challenges of the lessons and schoolwork, the arduous journeys to the cafeteria, and the inevitable afternoon drowsiness, the dedication of our teachers and the camaraderie among peers propel us through each day, leaving us ready to embrace the opportunities and joys that tomorrow will bring

Agroup of students gathered and whispered as two of the known journalists walked down the hallway of the school Luz felt their judging eyes following her and tried to ignore them, clutching her notebook close to her chest Ever since her latest expose in the school newspaper on bullying among cliques some students have turned hostile
Rue walked closely beside her friend, Luz, sensing her uneasiness “Sure ka nga okay ka lang?” she asked quietly Luz met her eyes briefly and nodded
She knew her article had held a harsh mirror up to the hypocrisy of the social dynamics at their school It had been through, the sourcing solid, even if the revelations were uncomfortable She knew it was her duty; giving a voice to those marginalized was more important than the gossip from the elites
“Wala lang na sa’kon” Luz replied under her breath “It’s our job to shed light on issues that others want to keep quiet Ga-ubra ‘ta para magserbisyo That article needed to be written, reactions regardless Kaya ko na ‘ya ang mga chismis”
Rue squeezed her arm in solidarity as they walked straight ahead for their next class, leaving the whispers behind
In the vastness of the media world, where false information has conquered many to deliberately misinform and deceive the people, where some have used it to influence the masses for political motives and create social wars between the masses, and anything to get likes and social engagement, journalism has become a laughingstock and a mockery to some As a result, people develop wariness and distrust towards journalists Only a few journalism organizations have earned the trust of those people around the area For the Augustinian students and members, it’s the University’s Publication The University of San Agustin Publications (USA Publications), informally known as USA Pub is the official student press corps of the University of San Agustin in Iloilo City, Philippines Originally a high school publication of Colegio de San Agustin de Iloilo (former name of USA), it was founded in 1928, with its first recorded publication released in August 1928 It is the oldest Catholic campus publication in Asia outside Manila The press corps publishes The Augustinian Mirror (magazine), The Augustinian (newspaper), Irong-irong (literary journal), Dingding ni Gusting (community wall newspaper), and other special issues Today it is one of the most awarded college press corps in the Philippines and it received its first national distinction when The Augustinian Mirror was adjudged as one of the three best-edited school magazines in the country during the late 1950s
“Those simple words, a simple click of the camera, and a simple stroke of a pencil to draw is the tiny ember that will transform into a tornado of light and flame”
Indeed, the school’s Publication is the backbone of the school in terms of capturing events and being the advocate of social advocacy

The symphonies that echo through a committed swimmer’s trip are the rhythmic sound of splashing water and the echo of swimmers slicing through the pool. Each stroke in the domain of aquatic skill conveys a message of self-control, tenacity, and
the quest for perfection But that’s just, at least, how it was for one particular swimmer
Krizzia Nhay Lamanosa, 16, a freshman student of the University of San Agustin’s Senior High School (USA–SHS), was very diligent before the finals of the swimming tournament in the Freshmen League ‘23 of the said university She was the top member of the girl’s swimming team after the team’s outstanding performance resulted in a total of six gold medals for all six events Even in a brief amount of time, she managed to carry off such a performance
“Hard work, determination, and persistence were the reasons why me and my team were able to win,” Lamanosa said when asked why she thinks her team achieved the things it did successfully “We were continuously
improving, and we were pushing our limits, which is why I think we’re able to win our awards and become champions ”
Her journey unfolds in the pursuit of the perfect stroke Like all the top athletes, Lamanosa began training at a very young age Hailing from Magsaysay Village, La Paz in Iloilo City, she started to swim competitively at just six years old She struggled with asthma, and her mother decided to let her swim in the hopes that it might help her manage her condition a bit better Her coach persuaded her mother to let her engage in competitive swimming after she exhibited remarkable potential and that’s how her lifelong journey began
After more than ten years of experience and clinching more than a hundred medals in the field of splashing water, Lamanosa has managed to win all gold medals at the tournament despite not having a coach She consequently doesn’t think it’s a huge deal that she didn’t have one during the tournament
“I believe there was no negative impact,” She further states “As a swimmer myself, I’ve been swimming for more than ten years, so I would know how to improve my skills, and the training is just the basics ”
Lamanosa gains confidence as soon as she steps onto the block; there is no pressure just unwavering faith Given

that they were able to develop her competitiveness, sportsmanship with other peers, and sense of togetherness, she found this year’s intramurals to be particularly noteworthy
However, swimmers have a mental challenge that they must overcome in addition to the constant laps and deliberate strokes The isolation of water requires a special kind of mental and physical toughness
