FATHER’S FAILURE, ANOTHER DAUGHTER[TE]’S INHERITANCE

The Dutertes have long held sway over the game and have come to symbolize political power, a nation whose politics have been defined by “new leaders with old names ”

Former President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration was distinguished by a contentious war on drugs, infrastructure initiatives under the “Build, Build, Build” program, and a foreign policy that deviated from Western alignment

Mr Duterte’s restricted six-year tenure presents obstacles to retaining power and evading accountability He believes his greatest chance of surviving is to run for vice president However, the Philippine political system permits vote-splitting It does not grant legal authority to vice presidents, implying that the victorious president may be from the opposition or outside of his alliance

Upon transferring the presidency to Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr in 2022, Rodrigo Duterte endorsed the son of the former dictator as a means to perpetuate his legacy, while his daughter, Sara Duterte-Carpio, was chosen as Vice President on Marcos Jr ’s slate

This alone suggests how family is crucial to Philippine politics, where dynastic succession frequently results from the progeny of a president’s parents Sara Duterte is likely to succeed her father due to her pedigree and political base in the southern region Mr Duterte has dissuaded her from running for president, but this may be seen as a strategy to downplay their family’s ambitions A Duterte presidency would also see her father as the power “behind the throne ”

However, Mr Duterte had in fact criticized his successor for allegedly being a weak leader and a user of illicit substances Nevertheless, the genuine cause of his outburst was evident: he and his daughter were denied the power and rewards that the Uniteam alliance had

implicitly agreed to provide them

Duterte has since repudiated his allegation, stating that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr was performing to the best of his abilities, and he also disputed that the President was hooked on cocaine, despite internet users presenting video evidence of his prior comments

After winning the election, Duterte-Carpio publicly stated her wish to become defense secretary; however, Marcos dismissed her by appointing her as education secretary instead Nevertheless, the educational department would be her first national political platform, especially given her plans to bring back faceto-face classes after the devastating effects of two years of lockdowns and coronavirus pandemic outbreaks

As the Vice President becomes the product of a dynasty that has persistently imposed its authoritarian mark on the nation, the scandal over her use of intelligence and confidential funds has raised questions about accountability and legality She also seemed to relish living in her father’s shadow, carrying on his tradition of onerous secrecy and a strong dislike for transparency Opposition politicians have questioned the 2024 CIF proposal and Duterte’s access to the funds

Duterte-Carpio is directly imitating her father’s autocratic methods with her request for confidential funds As a clear reminder that the Duterte administration is determined to stifle genuine democratic spaces and intimidate those who dare to question the status quo, it is a chapter in the ongoing story of eroding the democratic spirit

Though she has come under fire for insisting on the need for intelligence and confidential funds, Duterte-Carpio, who was once lauded by those who backed her as an evolution from her father’s authoritarianism and that stability and long-term reforms are guaranteed by her goal of a strong country, demonstrates that the apple has not fallen far from the tyrannical tree The noise of clandestine transactions, disguised motives,

and a steadfast lack of responsibility have drowned out the promises of reform and optimism, just as the apple does not choose the tree from which it grows

Critics see it as a concentration of power under a single family, a trait of political dynasties that suppresses leadership variety and upholds long-standing inequity It has been said that the Duterte tandem is a natural extension of their style of government

Duterte-Carpio later cited personal reasons for her resignation as co-vice chairperson of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict and secretary of the Department of Education, leaving the public in awe Her exit has left gaps in programs particularly in DepEd and may hinder efforts to address issues like the digital divide and classroom shortages

Her decision to resign highlights her ability to prioritize her values and well-being over authority Duterte-Carpio’s departure raises questions about leadership accountability, government responsibilities, and Philippine education challenges, and her influence will be felt in Philippine politics for years

The Duterte family’s rise to power in the Philippines has sparked debates about political dynasties Analysts contend that this can result in a concentration of power, patronage politics, and a lack of accountability With the influence of former President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Sara Duterte’s possible 2028 presidential run, the father-daughter tandem has stoked concerns about a protracted Duterte political era that some contend threatens the democratic ideal of equal opportunity for all

The Philippines may achieve a more inclusive and equitable political system alone by collective effort when leaders are selected based on their qualifications and commitment to public service rather than their ancestry

FACT VS. FLAIR AI Writes, Humans Tell

Given its increasing role in the human endeavor of reporting and public engagement, will Artificial Intelligence become less of a supplementary tool and more of a fullfledged substitute for journalists?

Individuals, especially those working in fields related to journalism, are propagating the explosive belief that robots, or artificial intelligence (AI), may eventually take over the role of trained journalists in the creation and dissemination of news People claim that devices and systems mimic human intelligence to implement AI, and it also makes improvements to itself by using data from the Internet to learn more

However, experts also say that there are instances where the data it collects is incorrect or purely fictional While numerous responses from AI text generators are accurate, AI frequently disseminates misinformation, and the responses it generates often comprise a blend of veracity and falsehood

According to technology correspondents and reporters, robots use a sophisticated algorithm to analyze how humans compose language online; yet, it does not judge the authenticity of content This uncertainty has raised concerns about the dependability of this innovative form of artificial intelligence, casting doubt on its utility until the issue is resolved or regulated

To establish character, a journalist must possess ethics and credibility; however, AI lacks these attributes Consequently, if it solely relies on information from the Internet, how can we ascertain the accuracy of the news it produces? There is a high possibility that there is a gap in their expression to the public because the information they obtained was not thoroughly examined and analyzed

Furthermore, they lack the passion and emotional depth of a journalist, in contrast to reporters, who possess the capability to recount narratives and have

Wdirect experience of the events they document

A computerized system cannot write with the precision of a journalist and may ignore contextual elements that the human brain can easily understand In addition, a robot often struggles to communicate emotions such as grief or pleasure in writing, as opposed to a journalist who may use a variety of literary styles

Given this, some journalists worry that they will soon be replaced by robots in writing and other facets of their work; however, best believe, these robots cannot be considered journalists because, despite significant progress in AI’s capacity to imitate journalistic writing styles, they are still unable to express human emotion in their articles

Nonetheless, although it may produce superficial information, AI possesses capabilities that enable rapid and practical news delivery, since it offers its own unique skills and operates in a “self-regulating and exceptionally swift” manner, often described as generating and disseminating content at an astonishing pace It is evident that most internet news organizations cannot afford the staggering amount of journalistic human resources required to match such performance

PPLAIN SIGHT

The Marcos-Duterte Feud

hilippine politics has always been a prolonged feud between bloodlines struggling to secure a seat of power

Rivalries have dated back to ancient times, and exist even up to this day In lieu of this, conflicts between opposing parties inevitably spark tension in between political discourse amidst the constitution’s call for proper decorum

The political storm between President Marcos and Vice President Duterte, known as the “Uniteam,” has weakened the Philippines’ political landscape, revealing deep rifts within the ruling elite and creating fractures within the political spectrum, eroding public trust and threatening democratic institutions

The political dilemma between two top public officials in the Philippines is rooted in their temporary alliance, which has led to a political feud that threatens national security and the lives of 117 million Filipinos, primarily because Sara Duterte is incompetent and inadequate to fulfill her role

Duterte’s hostility towards senators during a senate budget hearing led to her refusal to answer questions and her disdain for the senators Her defensive stance has raised questions about her avoidance of directly addressing inquiries about confidential funds allocated to her office

The future of technology is undoubtedly bright, and artificial intelligence in journalism raises the bar for reporting However, these new systems ought to function solely as tools rather than replacements for human effort and therefore should not and will never take the place of people

NK TAX al Cost of Womanhood

YN JULIETTE MAGTOTO

e are all aware of the fact that there is an existing hierarchy between the two sexes, where in most cases men are in favor

One example is how the market in our economy imposes women with higher costs compared to men’s products and services, although it takes the same skill, time, and factors to produce such manufacture, making the price solely based on gender This defines the Pink Tax a result of gender hierarchy leading to economic inequality among the two

The Pink Tax doesn’t technically levy taxes on women Rather, it's a subtle yet widespread pricing inequality where companies systematically charge higher prices for products or services specifically marketed to women, compared to identical or similar offerings for men This disparity is particularly dreadful when women constitute the primary target market These can be seen in personal care products,

fashion items, health and wellness services, and etc

For instance, a hotel kit costs more for the women’s version, despite the fact that the containing products are just similar to the ‘men’s kit’ version To boot, razors are one of the examples that are always stated regarding this issue, wherein women’s products are tariffed higher than men’s, even though the two razors are just the same model, and the only distinguishable difference is the aesthetics, such as the color or packaging

This phenomenon also applies in the toy sector, wherein the girls’ toys pink toys, rather cost 7% more than boys’ toys or blue colored toys This instance was shown in a side-by-side comparison of a scooter where the red scooter costs $24 99 and the pink scooter, which is identical and similar in all ways but color, costs $49 Age is no exception It is a dreadful fact that this issue doesn’t pick out women based on their age, but discriminates against women generally

Is it not the money from Filipino taxpayers? Is it not the money that’s rightfully for the Filipino people? Duterte’s evasiveness and lack of transparency have led to suspicion over funds intended for the nation's best interests, indicating a disregard for transparency and trust, despite her role as vice president This raises a critical concern: if the leader entrusted with such resources cannot justify their handling, what does that say about the integrity of the entire administration?

It is unbecoming for a government official, what more the vice president of the country, to utter degrading profanities and direct unwarranted threats towards another public official In a streamed conference posted by the ABS-CBN News Channel, the Office of the Vice President Chief hosted a press conference in which she vigorously

and all across all age groups

In addition, the gender wage gap also subsists in our society, which goes hand-inhand with the previous point Based on ILO (International Labour Organization), women are paid about 20 percent less than men, globally And in the Philippines, women are paid 18 4 percent less according to PIDS (Philippine Institute for Development Studies)

This strategy is justified by production costs, even though the product follows a differentiated marketing strategy It modifies products or services based on the target customer’s preferences and expectations, addressing specific market needs and demands It is indeed that being a woman costs more than being a man

released her sentiments, alongside profanities and in a disrespectful manner of talking In the same conference, she admitted to being in contact with a hitman, which she commanded to assassinate the president, his wife and another public official How can she be trusted with national security when she resorts to intimidation rather than peaceful engagement?

The second-highest official’s behavior, which includes threatening language and violence, sends a dangerous message to the nation, implying that the highest offices are no longer conducive to respectful dialogues and constructive solutions

The vice president’s relationship with the president is deteriorating, affecting the credibility of their administration, social, economic, and security sectors This division creates a faction within the administration, potentially polarizing the Filipino people and affecting our future

The Philippines needs leaders who can transcend personal interests and divisive politics, focusing on service, empathy, and listening to marginalized voices Marcos and Duterte, however, represent the opposite of what the nation needs for progress

But who is it that handed them that power in the first place? If we start to scrutinize those who lead us, let us revisit the times when the choice was within our reach Let us reflect on the choices that brought this drastic setback upon us

For once again, the answer hides in plain sight

aUSTICE DEPRIVED o Peace for EJK Families

fter eight long years of public outcry for justice, former President Rodrigo Duterte is finally under investigation for the alleged human rights violation during his bloody War on Drugs in 2016

While this signals progress toward accountability, it also exposes the painfully slow pace of the Philippine justice system

Duterte was elected president of the Philippines in 2016 with the infamous tagline “I hate drugs ” The former leader swore a covenant to the Filipinos to eradicate drugs in the country only in the span of 6 months

However, his war on drugs quickly spiraled into a brutal campaign marked by extrajudicial killings (EJKs), where bodies were dumped in dark alleys often with crude placards branding them as drug pushers

EAccording to the Duterte government, over 6000 people were killed during the drug operations However, human rights organizations refute this claim and argue that the actual number of casualties may be closer to 20,000, highlighting the devastating human toll of the country’s war on drugs

Data from the Lawyers’ Group Initiatives for Dialogue and Empowerment through Alternative Legal Services (IDEALS) Inc noted that 92 out of 97 of the alleged EJKs were either never investigated or were not followed up after routine initial inquiries

Meanwhile, reports from Amnesty International, ICC, and other organizations revealed that the victims were killed by police, military, or vigilantes linked to the state, including suspected “secret death squads ”

In the past years calls mounted to reinvestigate the brutal “war on drugs” of Duterte, but to no avail, only this year did the

Recently, the Department of Education (DepEd) was dealt a crippling blow with the slashing of ₱10 billion from its proposed 2025 computerization program This massive budget cut could have equipped thousands of public-school students with much-needed computers and gadgets, leveling the academic field in an era increasingly defined by digital competence

It has also come to light that the largest proposed allocation went to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), raising questions about the nation’s prioritization While infrastructure is undeniably important, investing in human capital through education should be a parallel, if not primary, focus

This recent budget cuts in education have sparked concerns about their longterm consequences on students, teachers, and the country’s future workforce

In an era where digitalization arises, this dispute may hinder the good quality education and may possibly widened the digital divide among other neighboring countries, resulting Filipino students being left behind The pandemic has already exacerbated this divide, with many students unable to access online classes due to a lack of digital tools and reliable internet connectivity

This may be a just a proposed, but it seems that the government doesn’t take education as a necessity in the national development

Department of Justice, Philippine National Police, and National Bureau of Investigation have reopened suspected cases of EJKs

During recent senate hearings, the former president implicated himself through contradictory and flawed statements His attempts to justify his actions while showing disdain for the speakers have once again topped the news headlines

Duterte admitted to instructing police to provoke suspects into fighting back to justify shooting them in “self-defense ” Despite claiming he never tolerated police abuses, his former justice secretary, Menardo Guevarra, told the UN in 2021 that police often failed to examine weapons used in drug war killings, disputing the “resisting arrest” narrative

For years, former President Duterte and his accomplices brazenly stood behind their brutal campaign, showing neither remorse nor accountability Now that justice is finally catching up, may they face the investigation with the same resolve they once displayed It is time to confront the truth, take responsibility, and answer for the lives lost

For the government agencies responsible, it is now imperative for them to act with urgency and precision to deliver the long overdue justice denied to the victims

Education, already a difficult arena for many Filipino families now faces another hurdle as the government appears to deprioritize this critical sector For many marginalized people this latest budget cut could mean a greater disadvantage Are they truly prioritizing the welfare of our people, or are they perpetuating cycles of dependency and ignorance?

The first point made against the budget cut is that it violates the Philippine Constitution which explicitly mandates that educational activities are given the highest budgetary priority Education is not a negotiable expenditure it is an investment in the future of the country, yet Congress seems to be overlooking this constitutional directive The recent budget deficit is viewed by many as a political maneuver, labelled to a similar and legal way of vote-buying targeting marginalized communities for short-term political gains

Educational investment is costly but more so if one lacks education for it is the key to a country’s progress The government must reassess its priorities As they should make increases with those significant agencies and use the budget as people would benefit most to address critical needs and ensure equitable distribution of resources Aside from the reduction of the proposed budget for education, it is also reported that the Department of Education (DepEd) has faced scrutiny over its utilization of funds allocated for the DepEd Computerization Program (DCP) In 2024, out of the ₱18 billion budgeted for the DCP, only ₱2 1 billion (11 92%) had been obligated as of June, leaving a significant portion unspent

If DepEd’s computerization budget is restored, they should make a concerted effort to actually allocate and spend most of it for its intended purpose This would ensure that the funds are used to enhance digital infrastructure in schools, provide necessary technology to students, and bridge the digital divide, rather than leaving the budget underutilized Cutting corners here is not just a disservice

These are only a part of Duterte’s injustices revelation a tip of an iceberg fragments of a larger, still unresolved tragedy While the sluggish wheels of justice turn; hope never left the heart and mind of the victims’ families Although the reopening of the EJKs case will never resurrect the dead, it ignited their families’ eagerness to seek justice and to finally lay them to rest

As night falls and the world lies still, the real perpetrators sleep soundly, undisturbed Meanwhile, the families of the victims remain haunted not by the ghosts of their loved ones, but by the relentless question that torments their every waking moment: When will justice be served, allowing them to finally find peace?

RICE

TO RISE A Journey to Progress

It’s absurd to think that an agricultural country with broad fields measuring up to 4 82 million hectares of land reserved for “Palay” cultivation remains one of the biggest importers of the world’s most cherished staple rice

With its retail price not getting any lower despite the tariffs being cut, is it ‘Tis the season or in this inflation?!

Thus, with the current problems of rice prices and its major effect on our overall economy, the Department of Agriculture recommended that tariffs should be lowered down to 15% from 35% on certain commodities, particularly rice, until 2028 in their hopes of lowering the cost to P35, as signed in executive order no 62 by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr last June 2024

We should, supposedly, expect that our country’s bounty rice farmers are able to compete with rice imports And this being said, how sure are we that lowering the rice tariffs would help in regulating the imports in the country in the long run? Importing is a help since we are reliant on rice imports due to unfortunate geographical reasons; however, too much leads to nothing but withered crops in the local fields

Seeing the rice plants weeping over the waste accumulated last year and its loss reaching P7 27 billion is distressing to even believe The farmers that are putting their butts into producing the local rice that we eat are underappreciated, to the point that the government has to mandate orders in order or them to compete with the global market and lower the costs

Although we can say that our current solution for the excruciatingly high rice prices is lowering the rice tariffs, moderation should be observed to avoid wasteful activities regarding this matter as imports could hoard in the country

The initiative of this order is indeed a significant move that could make or break the Philippine economy Knowing that the strengths of our government don't really lean in handling inflation, since it has always been a constant struggle within the Filipino community, the effects are still doubtful and unpredictable

As we witness sacks of rice being wasted every year, this could lead to an even broader problem, such as flooding of rice import waste, which is unfortunate as it could feed the mouths of many Filipinos This is definitely a big risk, as to why I understand that local rice providers raised concerns in this matter However, this issue has resulted in a P13 3 billion loss in revenue; when things get complicated, such as the mention of a loss in funds, it would get even more complicated

Apart from this lawmakers suspect price manipulation In a country where corruption is as common as breathing air, there is no doubt that this could occur This urges NBI to investigate the said suspicion, in which they really should ensure that the money being risked and lost is put into its right places

Past struggles with corruption in funds have shown that small adjustments can significantly improve the country’s financial flow, especially in dealing with massive debt and the ongoing issue of budget disappearance, emphasizing the need for government precautions

It is understandable that many have doubts about the implementation of this executive order The goal of P35 rice prices might be unbelievable, but monitoring is still ongoing; therefore, no inferences can be made as of the moment As we try to take actions in dealing with inflation and making our economy as stable as it can be, let us step on the firm side of the road and ensure that every cent spent or lost is worth the risk for the betterment of our country

Ariana,

CAIRISTIONA FJORD PIANDO

Ever since the dawn of Hollywood many famous identities have received backlash for dabbling in fields fans believe them to not be worthy of It’s claimed many-a famous names with greats like Adam Levine of Maroon 5 Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles and now Ariana Grande?

Back in 2021 the pop star s involvement in the upcoming musical movie adaptation of the Tony Award-winning production Wicked was announced to the public, where it was made known that she would be playing the role of Glinda the Good Witch As like most things in Hollywood, this garnered quite a reaction

The good singer to mediocre actor pipeline We’ve seen it, we’ve hated it, we’ve moved on from it.

Many fans believed that Ariana Grande wouldn’t be able to bring justice to the beloved character, who was previously played by Kristin Chenoweth in the Broadway production all the way back in 2003 Most of the criticism boils down to three things; Grande changing her voice for the role Grande being nervous and the worry that portraying Glinda might not be in the popstar’s skill set

Firstly it s a form of method acting With the rise of this frankly unnecessary comment from netizens the popstar took to the New York Times to respond in an interview, with her saying; “It was really important to erase as much of myself as possible, so that they could just be looking at Glinda ” Secondly, like any other person tasked with a big role, Grande’s nervousness to play the good witch wasn’t out of the ordinary Glinda as a character is beloved by all fans of all adaptations of Wicked, and the expectations for how she was to be portrayed served to only further raise the bar the pop

anotso

star was expected to reach Her exact words, as stated on the Sentimental Men podcast, were that “I felt a little bit of the initial nervousness, or the sort of preconceived notions about what I might be able to deliver or not deliver, or why I would be wrong ”

And finally, Ariana Grande the pop star wasn’t exactly the title that came to mind back when her career was just starting She was in fact known as the Ariana Grande who portrayed Cat Valentine in the Kids Choice Award-winning show Victorious and spin-off series Sam and Cat on Nickelodeon and as the Ariana Grande who portrayed Charlotte in 13: The Musical originally made all the way back in 2008 So not only is she someone with a background in acting, she has a background on broadway

Also people seem to forget that Ariana Grande is an absolute powerhouse of a singer So the criticisms of her not being able to bring justice to Glinda’s songs is not only baseless, but also downright impossible Have you even heard her rendition of No One Mourns the Wicked? Absolutely insane The vocal performance by the singer is exceptional, showcasing her ability to deliver Glinda’s songs with grace, power, and precision

Despite the harsh criticism and continued backlash all throughout the movie’s production and release, the star continues to understand netizens’ concerns and has chosen to respond through the act of portraying Glinda itself In the end, Grande was still given the role and the pushback didn t stop her from playing the infamous good witch And she ended up doing it quite well because the musical movie Wicked ended up garnering an impressive 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and a whopping $160 million over its opening weekend at the global box office

The movie’s monetary success was more than enough proof of a job well done, and both leading ladies performed amazingly without outshining the other Everyone and everything stayed loyal to the source material all while giving it a fresh new take, satisfying both old and new fans who went to go watch it

All in all, Wicked in and of itself is a franchise definitely worth its status, and the high expectations of the 2024 movie adaptation wasn’t anything that was out of the ordinary Although, of course, this doesn’t excuse the hate that arose on its various aspects simply because netizens were worried about

it not being as well handled as it deserved to be Ariana Grande seems to end up being a great choice for Glinda, and as evident in the star s enthusiasm of initially receiving the role it’s clear that it’s one she’s worked hard for

For fans of the original Broadway adaptation, not being able to see Glinda being portrayed the exact same way Kristin Chenoweth once did for sure broke a few hearts But to once again remind everyone the musical is over 21 years old and Ariana Grande’s fresh take on the character doesn’t take away from the OG Glinda the Good Witch If anything, she’s only added to it
