WHAT IS UN YOUTH? “UN Youth inspires young New Zealanders to be global citizens. Throughout Aotearoa, our work equips young people to become informed, engaged and critical New Zealanders who understand their global context and the connections between the local and the global.�

We are a registered charity run by young volunteers and form the youth branch of the United Nations Association of New Zealand (UNANZ). As one of many international United Nations Associations, we are part of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA).

WHAT IS NZ NZ Model UN is the premier Model UN event organised by UN Youth NZ. NZ Model UN annually attracts well over 200 like-minded high school students to the conference. It is a multifaceted educational experience available to high school students.

It is an educational initiative that supports the vision, value and the principles of the NZ Curriculum, which aims to encourage and inspire young New Zealanders to identify with communities beyond national borders and respect other cultures.

The NZ Model UN conference is a simulation of a real UN assembly. Students assume the role of international diplomats representing member states of the United Nations. They engage in the art of persuasion as they lobby to adopt a resolution to an issue. They experience first-hand the dynamics of international relations and the challenges of achieving global compromise by learning to negotiate with those whose positions are contrary to their own.

MODEL UN? By allowing students to assume the roles of UN member states, NZ Model UN, as a forum, teaches students to be open-minded as well as to appreciate and respect the value of other perspectives. It is also a fun and interactive way to educate young people about global issues. Delegates discuss and debate pressing global issues, from internet governance and global financial regulation to climate change and refugee migration.

This is a great chance to experience first-hand the diplomatic and decision-making processes that guide international relations, and to become aware of the impact these processes have on the students’ own lives.

NEW ZEALAND MODEL UNITED NATIONS 2012

The 2012 conference will be the largest event that UN Youth has held in terms of delegate numbers, with places for a total of 240 high school students. Next year, the conference will be in Wellington in early July and will coincide with the term two and three school holidays.

COMMITTEE SESSSIONS A delegate will be allocated a UN member nation, whose polices and ideals they will adopt throughout the conference and which they will lobby and negotiate on behalf of for the duration of the conference. At NZ Model UN 2012, delegates will participate in debating five resolutions on five separate global issues over the three days; one for each of the three committee sessions and two during the plenary on the final day.

FORMAL BALL The ball is the premier and most glamorous social event at NZ Model UN. In 2012, we will be holding the event at the Amora Hotel. The ball will feature a formal dinner followed by dancing. The ball is a well-earned treat for the delegates after three days of an intense and robust educational experience.

SPONSORS AND NGO EXPO The expo will occur during an extended break time and will be an opportunity for sponsors and non-government organisations to interact with delegates and conference assistants, educating them on how their organisations are run, what they do and how they can get youth involved. As a sponsor, you will have the opportunity to have a stall at the expo and be able to communicate your vision and goals and inspire delegates to become active in their communities.

OUTREACH The Outreach Programme was first implemented during NZ Model UN 2011. The goal of the Outreach Programme is to bring global citizens down to a grass roots level and to inspire them to seek out ways of assisting their local communities.

It is a practical extension of the conference, as students are not only able to discuss issues such as refugees, humanitarian law, deforestation, female empowerment, but they are able to experience these issues first hand and learn over the course of the afternoon, the roles that not-for-profit organisations play in these areas.

THE TEACHERS’ WORK SHOP

The Teachers’ Workshop is part of our multilateral approach for achieving the educational and aspirational objectives of UN Youth. Whilst inspiring global citizens is important, we realise that this must be sustained after the conference, thus we attempt to pass our mission onto teachers who can empower agents of positive change in the classroom. We pride ourselves in the close connection of the Model UN Programme and the NZ Curriculum and the Teachers’ Workshop is a crucial and integral part of this holistic approach.

NZ MODEL UN 2012

VISION: EMPOWERING DEVELOPMENT

BY EDUCATING GLOBAL CITIZENS UN Youth is fundamentally an educational NGO with the aim to ‘Inspire global citizens’. As a youthful, vibrant and energetic organisation, we aim to empower development through our educational programme by actively engaging global citizens. One message NZ Model UN strives to pass onto the youth who attend is the importance of the connection between themselves, civil society and national and international governing institutions. Our vision on empowering development by educating global citizens thus seeks to fulfil these multifaceted objectives.

THEME: INEQUALITY The theme of NZ Model UN ties in with the vision of the conference because inequality is one of the foremost motivators of development. Inequality manifests itself in many different forms, from race and gender, to class, wealth and civil liberties.

Inequality can be measured using time, place and scale, and has an enormous impact on individuals, towns, countries and regions. The UN General Assembly with one state, one vote, is an effective forum to discuss the widespread inequality between the organisation’s member states.

This theme is applicable to all the committees of the General Assembly that NZ Model UN will feature given the political, social and economic dimensions that the committees address. It has the potential to be used in the specific contexts the resolutions will be debated on, and also tie together as a holistic theme encompassing the entire conference.

As a universal theme, it gives delegates a wide breadth and a creative license to engage with the various issues that have created and sustained inequality. It is a theme which allows students to see their role in civil society and their chance to make a difference in the world, be it on a local or global scale, and in the short or long term.

BENEFITS TO YOUNG NEW ZEALANDERS • Participants will build confidence in public speaking, negotiation, and critical thinking • NZ Model UN demonstrates to young people that discussing pressing global issues are intellectually stimulating and exciting • Youth are given a platform to promote and cause change and become involved within the local and national community through our Outreach Programme • NZ Model UN creates a safe and open forum for all youth from across New Zealand – an opportunity rarely experienced through traditional schooling • Participants will be exposed to local, national and international organisations that work towards improving our world and humanity; and • Students will meet other like-minded individuals and form long-lasting friendships and networks

BENEFITS TO COMMUNITIES • Direct benefits to the community stem from participation in the Outreach Programme, where young people will gain an awareness of non-government organisations and volunteer in community initiatives • NZ Model UN provides a legitimate source for a youth perspective to engage with various issues, which can be used to influence decision-making in all sectors of society • Young people who participate in events like NZ Model UN often become leaders of their own communities, and it is critical that civil society encourages a flow of younger leaders to follow in their footsteps; and • Communities are presented with a positive view of modern youth, which promotes a sense of trust, mutual respect and pride in its young people.

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES GOLD LEVEL – $5000

1. The sponsor’s logo and website links will feature in materials sent to external stakeholders (schools, teachers, students, parents and others), these include: a) Handbooks b) Regional Newsletters c) Post conference booklet d) Post conference video 2. The sponsors will have the opportunity to insert a description page in participant handbooks.

3. The sponsor may request to include an information stand and display of a banner during the conference.

4. The sponsor will also receive a mention in the following UN Youth channels for 6 months before and after the conference: a) UN Youth website (NZ Model UN 2012 page) b) NZ Model UN 2012 Facebook event page.

5. The sponsor will have the opportunity to come in and showcase their organisation at the NGO and Sponsorship expo at NZ Model UN 2012.

6. The sponsor may include media from NZ Model UN in the sponsor’s promotional material, and to use the logo on the sponsor’s webpage for 12 months after the conference.

SILVER LEVEL - $2500

1. The sponsor’s logo and website links will feature in materials sent to external stakeholders (schools, teachers, students, parents and others), these include: a) Handbooks b) Regional Newsletters c) Post conference booklet 2. YOU+ MODEL UN Sponsorship is being sought to cover the majority of the event costs so that the registration fees for the delegates and conference assistants (currently $250 and $60 respectively) may be minimised. The prepared GST inclusive budget (on the inside back cover) is based on actual costs from the 2011 event and up to date quotes for 2012. Any sponsorship acquired above the cost of the event will contribute towards NZ Model UN 2013 or be returned upon request.

With your involvement, assistance and co-operation we can provide a professional, worldclass conference while maintaining low attendance costs in order to make the event as accessible as possible.
