UN YOUTH NZ United Nations Youth Association of New Zealand, or UN Youth, serves as the youth arm of the United Nations Association of New Zealand, a member of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA). WFUNA has consultative status to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Despite only being in existence since 1999, UN Youth creates an amazing opportunity for youth to express themselves, learn about the United Nations and provide positive solutions for what is, ultimately, their future. UN Youth is run by New Zealand youth, for New Zealand youth. Our conferences and events provide a platform for young people youth to address and discuss the global issues facing us now and in the future.

NEW ZEALAND MODEL SECURITY COUNCIL New Zealand Model Security Council is New Zealandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premier University conference students conference, bringing together like-minded tertiary students from all over New Zealand, to discuss and address security issues that plague the world today.

The NZ Model Security Council conference is a simulation of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations and is charged with the maintenance of international peace and security. You will assume the role of an international delegate for one of the 15 nation of the United Nations Security Council. You will engage in the art of persuasion, and intense debate as you tackle some of the biggest threats to international peace and security existing today. Each member state will be represented by 5 delegates. You will be divided into 5 committees, all debating a different topic, for two days. On the final day, there will be plenary session, with all delegates attending.

It’s definitely a highlight on the UN Youth calender. I attended NZ Model SC in 2011, and 2012, and a definite highlight for me was a talk from Lieutenant General Richard Rhys Jones, the head of the NZ Armed Defence Force, at the 2012 event.”

“ONE WITH A RICH HISTORY”

2008

Having noted the distinct lack of quality events for University students to attend, in 2008 UNYANZ created it’s premier University level event. It was held in Wellington, back-to-back with the NZ Model UN, with the theme “Human Security: A new approach to peace”. The event showcased Wellington’s vibrant culture, and was anchored around Parliament, and the VUW Hunter Building.

2009

Building on its 2008 success, NZ Model Security Council travelled in 2009 to Auckland. This year saw the format revolutionised, to become what it is today. 2009 had no theme, but introduced iconic aspects of todays event; such as the crisis plenary, the ball, and the closing drinks. Rumours of a David Shearer drinking game are rife, but unconfirmed.

2010

Building upon the UNYANZ Canterbury region’s recent growth, and success. 2010 showed off the best preearthquake Christchurch had to offer; the clean, modern convention centre, the Garden City’s quirky nightlife, and the iconic cathedral. This event finished mere days before the start of the region’s earthquake saga.

2011

2011 was NZ Model Security Council’s first visit to Dunedin. The event was the University debut of “UN Youth NZ, an evolution of UNYANZ. The theme for this year was “Diversity. Unity. Security”. The conference showed off the edgy new Hunter Centre, and had a firm anchor in stunning Otago museum.

2012

In 2012, NZ Model Security Council returned to Auckland, The conference ran with the theme “Technology of Conflict”. The event was a glamourous one; showcasing some of Auckland’s best restaurants and bars, with the plenary and rooftop ball at the Rydges being a lasting highlight.

2013: YOUR YEAR

In 2013, New Zealand Model Security Council returns to Dunedin, one of the world’s great small cities. New Zealand’s oldest University, the University of Otago, is the home for this years conference. Dunedin has a unique, vibrant University culture, and this culture is being woven in to New Zealand Model Security Council. Day 1 is the training day for the conference, held at the Otago University Hunter Centre. Starting at midday, it will feature world class speakers and workshops, which will upskill you in preparation of the conference itself. This will finish with an “amazing race” teambuilding exercise which will finish up at our first social event. Day 2 is the first committee day. Following the opening ceremony, you will be placed in a committee, along with representatives from the fourteen other member states. Your committee will be focusing on a specific security issue. This day will feature a skills workshop. Day 3 is the second committee day. This day will focus intensely on problem solving in the committee sessions, and finalising the Security Council resolutions. Day 4, is the plenary day. Your delegations will be reunited at the Dunedin Town Hall, in the Octagon. The plenary will be an intense, crisis session of the Security Council, consolidating all that was discussed in the committees.

Night 1: You really will ‘get a taste’ for the pride of this Southern conference. Following the “Amazing Race” around Dunedin’s iconic locations,, you will get the chance to unwind, and relax at the Speights Ale House. Dinner, dessert, and a drink are provided. The perfect way to unwind after an intense day of training, and get ready for the Security Council itself.

Night 2: Get prepared for a taste of Dunedin’s quirky restaurant scene, Committee dinners on this night will be held in some of Dunedin’s coolest restaurants, with members of the committees you will have been working in. These dinners will be followed by a themed party at Fever club. With cheap drinks and cheap food, night 2 will be a great way to unwind after a tough day of work. Night 3: The infamous NZ Model Security Council ball night. Being held in the iconic Dunedin railway station; this ball will be a glamourous celebration of Dunedin, and all that you will have achieved during the committee sessions. This ball will feature a delicious 3 course meal, fine wine, and of course, great music.

Night 4: Following the end of the plenary, there is a closing drinks, and prizegiving, at Carousel bar. Carousel is one of Dunedin’s most glamourous, and gorgeous bars, and is only a stones throw away from the Octagon; the cultural hub of the city. This will be a great opportunity to let your hair down after a long four days.

Day 5: An optional brunch at one of Dunedin’s iconic cafes; capers. Revered by students for it’s two-for-one pancake deals, This is the perfect way to relax and reflect after an amazing conference.

THE THEME FOR NEW ZEALAND MODEL SECURITY COUNCIL THIS YEAR IS “AN UNHEALTHY WORLD” The world of today is full of problems. Climate change threatens to drastically unbalance the societies in which we live. Deadly diseases threaten the lives of hundreds of millions people. Everyday, humans commit atrocities to fellow humans that completely subvert our morals and beliefs. The world is clearly not a healthy one. This year at NZ Model Security Council you will take action, and take ownership of these problems. These problems are some of the greatest threats to international Security existing, and it will be your job to take ownership of these issues, and ensure international peace and security.

Registrations open on May the 28th. Registrations will work a new way this year, with new quick-acceptance. Your place will be confirmed within a week of registration, allowing you to book your flights to Dunedin early, while they’re cheap. Registration fees for this year will be an all time low of $150
