From the Principal's Desk (Term 3) Dear Parents / Guardians Hope you and your family had a good September break!

Term 3 was engaging and exciting for Unitians.

The term was punctuated with exciting learning experiences through key events like Sports Fiesta, Racial Harmony, National Day, and Teachers’ Day. Sports Fiesta returned after a 2-year hiatus due to the pandemic. There was active student participation in the inter-class games competitions conducted by the student leaders. The students displayed core values like perseverance and teamwork as they competed with each other in netball, soccer, volleyball, and floorball.

The school commemorated Racial Harmony Day on 22 July 2022 with numerous activities for the different levels. The Lower Secondary students were captivated by the different forms of martial arts performances such as Silat, Silambattam and Wushu, and they had fun trying out simple wushu moves. In their CCE lessons, students had conversations about tense social situations where racism and bias might exist and learnt ways to manage them.

Our Sec 3 students had concurrent, eye-opening and engaging learning journeys at: Ministry of National Development Building where they learnt how HDB fosters a sense of neighbourliness and community spirit by designing and constructing different community spaces that promote interactions; Harmony Centre @ An-Nadhah Mosque which serves as an integrated hub for the promotion of greater understanding and engagement among people from all faith and communities; - Religious Rehabilitation Centre @ Khadijah Mosque where students became aware of radical ideology, violent extremism and the concerted effort in counter-ideology to prevent Singaporeans from falling prey to violent extremism.

On 8 August 2022, the school’s National Day Celebrations marked a return of the Parade segment, as well as live performances, after two years. All the CCAs participated in Community Singing, belting out old-school Singaporean hits.

Through curricular engagement, students were reminded that UNITY in DIVERSITY is what makes Singapore strong and that we should continue to strengthen the Singapore spirit to build a future that is “Stronger Together”.

The term closed with Unitians showing their appreciation and gratitude to the teachers for their dedication and hard work. Led by the Unity Council, the teachers were entertained by the performances based on the theme ‘Flashback Arcade'. Teachers came dressed up in Retro style and participated in mini games and activities prepared by the CCA student leaders.

These key events were intentionally planned to provide opportunities for our students to learn as well as put into practice the school values of Respect, Compassion, Commitment and Perseverance. They also learnt to work together while participating in various activities.

Term 4 has just started. Our students are busy preparing for the exams (Sec 4s and 5 for the GCE N and O level exams; Sec 1s to Sec 3s for the coming End of Year Exams.)

Do continue to support your child by monitoring their physical and mental well-being and encouraging your child to have a Growth Mindset as he/she prepares for the last lap of the academic year.

Sports Fiesta Unitians had loads of fun playing and competing with one another in different kinds of sports like floorball, soccer, netball and volleyball during the Sports Fiesta. The event which was held on 1st July commenced with a speech by the Principal, followed by a recitation of Sportsmanship Pledge. Inspired by a shared vision to win, Unitians persevered and coordinated with one another during the inter-class (learning groups) competition. Some of the students displayed their leadership potential as they stepped up to become umpires and referees for these games.

ASEAN Symposium Five Secondary 4 students represented our school at the ASEAN Symposium 2022, which was jointly organised by ASEAN Studies Centre, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies and Kranji Secondary School. The five Unitians did the school proud with their confident presentation on food sustainability. They also had an enriching experience interacting with students from other local and international schools.

Racial Harmony Day As part of Racial Harmony Day commemoration, learning journeys were organised for Secondary Three students to several unique locations in Singapore, such as Religious Rehabilitation Group Resource Centre at Khadijah Mosque, Harmony Centre at An-Nadhah Mosque and Harmony in Diversity Gallery at Ministry of National Development Building, to acquire deeper knowledge about our diverse cultural heritage. The lower secondary students were in awe as they watched outstanding martial arts performances like Silat and Silambattam, and they even tried out some basic Wushu moves.

Unitians also learnt to practise respect, tactfulness and empathy as they engaged in conversations about racial, religious and social harmony during RHD lessons.

National Day Unitians celebrated the nation's 57th year of independence with our own National Day Parade. Contingents from the different Uniformed Groups marched with pride to the rhythmic beats of the Symphonic Band. During the special National Day lesson, students shared their hopes and aspirations for Singapore in accordance with this year's theme of 'Stronger together, Majulah!'.

The National Day celebration ended momentously with a concert where the different CCA groups showcased their singing talent in our school's own Unity Sing Singapore competition.

Yew Tee CC National Day Celebrations Unitians shared the joy and enthusiasm of celebrating the nation's birthday with the community. Our Uniformed Groups (UG) contingent represented the school in the Yew Tee Observance Ceremony.

Additionally, the guests who attended the Yew Tee National Day Dinner at Yew Tee Hard Court were entertained with lively and energetic performances by our students from Performing Arts Groups, Dance and Choir.

Experience ITE Programme

Secondary 3NA students visited Hotel@West which is run by students at ITE College West.

Students were involved in the Advanced Elective Module on Digital Visual Effects at Singapore Polytechnic.

They would be awarded a graded AEM certificate that could be useful for future EAE applications.

Students also visited the Robotics Students went on a learning journey and Artificial Intelligence to a Fire Station to deepen their Department at ITE College West. classroom learning for D&T and career exploration in this life-saving sector.

Teachers' Day Unitians expressed their heartfelt gratitude to their teachers' during the Teachers' Day celebrations on 1st Sept. The theme for this year's celebration was Flashback Arcade and all teachers were encouraged to dress according to the Retro theme. There were performances dedicated to teachers by our Performing Arts Groups, followed by an hour CCA-led segment at various venues. The CCA leaders run carnival had a variety of activities suitable for all, and teachers had a fun-filled day.

Staff Appreciation Lunch Staff Appreciation Day was organised on Friday, 26th August. Teachers were treated to a sumptuous High Tea at Holiday Inn. The theme was Holiday - Ready, Jet Set, Fly! There were numerous activities like individual and table games, Lucky Draw, Best-Dressed Lady, Gentleman and Table competion, photo-taking sessions with colleagues, as well as a buffet with a wide-spread menu.

AGM Competition

Animation and Game Making Competition (AGM) is an annual competition for secondary school students taking Computer Applications (CPA).

In the Game Category, students had to create a game based on the theme - "Technology". Leong Yui Feng (3T1) created a game on Drone and achieved Silver award.

In the Animation Category, students had to create an animation based on the theme "Sustainable Environment". Kee Chin Ru did an animation on “Saving Water for the Environment” and achieved a Bronze award. She presented fun facts and emphasised the importance of saving water through the interactions between two characters.
