From the Principal’s Desk (Semester One 2025)
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Greetings! It gives me great joy to welcome you to our Semester One newsletter, a celebration of the growth, achievements, and experiences that have shaped the first half of 2025 at Unity Secondary School.
This year marks our 26th Birthday a milestone that reminds us not just of our students’ achievements, but of our shared journey as a school community.
Prominently featured above our school hall stage, and on every student’s uniform, is the symbol of the eagle a powerful emblem that represents the essence of what we hope every Unitian becomes: bold, sharpeyed, and unyielding in the face of challenge. Like the eagle, we aspire to soar together with our Unitians

We live in a time of rapid and often unpredictable change. As Prime Minister Lawrence Wong noted in a recent address, the global landscape is increasingly defined by shocks, uncertainty, and a “me-first” mindset. In this climate, what worked in the past may no longer serve us in the future. The question before us then is this: how do we prepare our students to navigate the future?
Our answer lies in our school’s vision and mission to nurture lifelong learners and inspiring leaders We aim to develop resilient, future-ready Unitians with the passion to serve and lead. Like eagles with sharp vision, our students must learn to adapt to shifting winds, maintain focus amidst distraction, and rise above challenges with purpose.
To this end, our programmes, pedagogical approaches, and culture of professional learning continue to evolve. In 2024, Unity was honoured to host international education delegates who visited our school on the topic of the Role of Technology to Transform Education In 2025, we were privileged to welcome the Director-General of Education, Ms Liew Wei Li, during MOE’s School Visits. We have also shared our Education Technology and 21st Century Competencies (21CC) Development Journey with Cluster School Leaders and schools who are keen to learn from our experience. These opportunities affirm our ongoing efforts to harness technology meaningfully to transform teaching and learning. Our teachers integrate technology seamlessly into Active Learning lessons, design end-to-end learning experiences with the SLS, and facilitate peer learning to deepen students’ understanding.
We are also proud that Unity has been spotlighted by NIE’s SingTeach publication 2025 for our work in differentiated instruction and active learning—evidence of our teachers’ unwavering commitment to pedagogical excellence. You are invited to explore it through the following link: Enabling Teachers, Empowering Learners: A Whole-School Approach to Active Learning and Differentiated Instruction | SingTeach | Education Research for Teachers | Research within Reach
This spirit of growth and innovation also comes alive through initiatives such as our Open Classrooms, inviting colleagues and external guests into our learning spaces. Through feedback and shared reflections, we sharpen our craft and cultivate a vibrant, collaborative professional culture Our recent Open Classrooms event welcomed over 55 educators and leaders from MOE, NIE, and other schools an inspiring reminder of the power of learning in community.
Just as eagles constantly scan the horizon for new opportunities, our programmes are designed to prepare students for emerging frontiers. Our Applied Learning Programme (ALP) continues to evolve and in 2025, we take our "Future of Food" theme to new heights.
Secondary 1 students explored smart home farming, while Secondary 2 students delved into the world of alternative food sources, with a focus on insect protein. This journey for our Secondary 2 students culminates in an ALP-VIA Festival, where our Secondary 2 students showcase their learning and creativity through prototypes such as pastries made with insect protein, self-designed insect habitats, and interactive games and quizzes that educate their peers on the viability and benefits of insectbased food.
In this same spirit of innovation, three of our Secondary 4 students Calyn Sim (4A5), Caitlyne Ong (4A6), and Abby Chan (4A5) competed in the prestigious Singapore Science & Engineering Fair (SSEF) with a vermicomposting project that transformed food waste into energy. Their ingenuity earned them Special Awards from the Electrochemical Society and the Singapore Association for the Advancement of Science a proud moment for Unity and a shining example of creative problemsolving.
Beyond STEM, our students also shine in the arts. We are delighted that Adva Ng (4I8) has been selected to showcase her artwork at the Singapore Pavilion for Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan — a moment of national pride!
Our students also learn to grow through discomfort. The 2 CCA Form Class initiative is now in its second year, intentionally grouping students from contrasting CCAs to encourage cross-boundary collaboration. While the initial transition was challenging in 2024 where many preferred the comfort of like-minded peers from same CCAs, we now see students embracing diversity and building resilience. In my conversations with students about the 2 CCA Form Class format, Adam (3S3) and Chloe Ee (3I8) shared that stepping out of their comfort zones and learning to connect with peers from different CCAs has greatly helped them develop empathy, adaptability, and teamwork.
As a school, we also gather strength from community — just as eagles roost together in winter for warmth and protection. Our Leadership Learning Weeks, Unity Run, Unity Fiesta and Values In Action Programmes are a testament to our belief that a school that plays, serves, and grows together, stays strong together
But no eagle soars alone. The wind beneath our wings comes from you our parents, alumni, School Advisory Committee members, and partners. Your steadfast support, partnership, and belief in our mission make everything we do possible. Thank you for helping us build the nest, strengthen the flight, and lift our young eaglets as they take wing
As you browse through the pages of this newsletter, I invite you to celebrate the many milestones, stories, and journeys that make Unity unique. May the eagle emblem of Unity Secondary School continue to inspire us — to set our sights far, rise above every storm, and lift one another higher.
Fly High, Fly Far, Fly With Purpose

CCA Leaders & Unity Council Appointment Ceremony 2025
Unity Secondary School held its annual CCA Leaders and Unity Council Appointment Ceremony on 9 May 2025. Organised by the Student Leadership Development Committee (SLDC), the event marked the handover of leadership across CCAs and the appointment of the 15th Unity Council.
Symbolic transitions were carried out by various groups: Sports CCAs passed on equipment, Performing Arts leaders shared signature moves, and Uniformed Groups conducted flag handovers — each representing the values and spirit of their CCA. The Unity Council’s badge removal ceremony was a poignant highlight, reflecting the trust placed in incoming leaders. A milestone was achieved with the appointment of the school’s first Peer Support Leaders Council President and Vice Presidents.
The event also included a heartfelt farewell to the Indian Orchestra CCA and their instructor, Mr Lenin, marking the closure of a cherished chapter. Outgoing leaders shared reflections on service, resilience, and growth. As the ceremony concluded, the new leaders stepped forward with a renewed commitment to serve and lead the Unity community.

Leadership Learning Week - Sec 1
Leadership Learning Week is a dynamic week of Student Development Experiences designed to empower students as they explore their strengths, interests, and talents. Through hands-on activities, reflective sessions, and collaborative challenges, students are given the opportunity to connect meaningfully with peers, enhance their leadership potential, and create lasting memories. It is not just about discovering who they are, but it is also about shaping who they want to become.
Our Secondary One students spent an enriching week discovering their interests and talents across three exciting domains: Sports, Aesthetics, and STEM. Through hands-on experiences and collaborative learning, they deepened their understanding of each area while developing confidence and creativity.

Our Secondary Two students kicked off their Leadership Learning Week with a special highlight the Future of Food Festival, a product of how students carry out Values-in-Action (VIA) through our Applied Learning Programme (ALP). This event was the culmination of four weeks of interdisciplinary learning using Design Thinking principles during both Science and English lessons.
This project-based learning experience encouraged students to empathise with real-world sustainability issues, explore innovative food solutions, and advocate for insect-based protein as a sustainable alternative. Their presentations reflected both creativity and scientific thinking, as they took on the role of changemakers for a more sustainable future.

Adding to the excitement, the cohort embarked on a 3-day, 2-night Outdoor Adventure Learning Camp at Camp Christine. Immersed in nature, students developed resilience, teamwork, and leadership skills, making it a truly memorable and transformative experience.

Leadership Learning Week - Sec 3
As part of ECG Focused Week, the Secondary 3 students embarked on meaningful experiences to explore career pathways aligned with their interests, strengths, and aspirations. The week also supported students in developing their e-portfolios in preparation for Early Admissions Exercise (EAE) applications and future interviews.

VIA Shopping Fair – A Meaningful Character Learning Day!
In January, all Secondary Two to Five students took part in our VIA Shopping Fair – an experience to grow as compassionate, empathetic changemakers. Students engaged in meaningful conversations with representatives from six different social service agencies, gaining insights into real community needs. The event brought the community to our students, providing a structured platform for them to observe, listen and understand all in line with the principles of Design Thinking. In their mixed-CCA form classes, students brainstormed ideas on how they can make a difference and support their chosen beneficiaries. This was a powerful first step in helping students see themselves as active contributors to a kinder, more inclusive society!

Chinese New Year Celebrations
On 28 January, Unity celebrated Chinese New Year as we ushered in the year of the snake. A school-wide Lohei session was conducted to foster unity and good wishes followed by a concert featuring student and teacher performances, including music, dance, and a guest appearance by the God of Fortune. The objective was to foster appreciation and understanding of Chinese cultural traditions, to promote school spirit and unity through shared festive experiences and to provide students with opportunities to express themselves creatively and work collaboratively. Students showcased creativity through video production and performances and learnt the importance of cultural traditions. The event promoted inclusiveness and a deeper appreciation of Chinese culture among the diverse student body.

Hari Raya Puasa & Tamil New Year
On Friday, 4 April 2025, the Unity family came together to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Tamil New Year, embracing the rich traditions that contribute to Singapore’s vibrant and diverse cultural identity. Aligned with the nation’s commemoration of SG60, the celebration was a powerful reminder of the shared values, respect, harmony, and unity that continue to strengthen our multicultural society. This meaningful celebration was jointly brought together by CCE (ISPR) and Mother Tongue Department (ML & TL). The event was thoughtfully designed to go beyond performances, promoting cultural literacy and deeper student engagement with Singapore’s heritage with highlights that include lively cultural performances by our talented staff and students, showcasing traditional Malay and Indian music and dance forms.
More than a concert, the celebration served as a learning experience rooted in our CCE vision to nurture culturally grounded individuals who appreciate and uphold the values that unite us as one people.
A heartfelt thank you to all staff, student leaders, and performers who contributed to making the event a success. Let’s continue fostering understanding, appreciation, and a strong sense of belonging as we journey together through Singapore’s rich cultural tapestry.

International Friendship Day & NS Engagement at Unity
On 11 April 2025, Unity Secondary School marked International Friendship Day with activities promoting cultural understanding and regional awareness. Guided by the theme “Forging Friendships in a Complex World,” students enjoyed cultural performances, costume displays, an ASEAN quiz, and contributed reflections to a Friendship Tree led by the Student Well-Being Committee.
On the same day, Secondary 3 students attended a National Service Engagement Session, where alumni and teachers shared personal NS experiences across the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police Force. Students reflected on their role in supporting National Service and Total Defence.
These parallel events reinforced Unity’s commitment to building empathy, inclusivity, and national identity among students.

Sports Fiesta
The annual Sports Fiesta was successfully held on 16th May. The students had the opportunity to hone the skills they learnt during PE lessons and competed with one another with respect and commitment. This year, the Secondary 4 students also participated in a new sport, Handball, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

The Sports Fiesta allowed Unitians to explore a variety of sports and activities, foster connections among participants through shared activities, and create memorable experiences that strengthened relationships and enhanced communication through team sports. The All Stars games, where students competed against teachers and school staff, served as a memorable highlight of the day.
