UNITY SECONDARY SCHOOL

Unity Secondary School was established in January 2000 with 17 staff and 364 students from 50 different primary schools. Mr N Satianathan who was appointed Principal-designate in July 1999, became the first Principal. The official opening ceremony of the school was held on 11 November 2001. The opening ceremony was officiated by Mr Yeo Cheow Tong, then Minister for Communications & Information Technology, and MP for Hong Kah GRC. Since its inception Unity has placed great emphasis on providing a holistic education for all students.

The school programme gave ample exposure and provided opportunities for students to develop themselves into leaders with a vision for excellence anchored on integrity. It started with just 7 CCAs in 2000 and by 2004, it had a buffet of over 30 CCAs for Unitians to choose from. The students participated actively in community events and competitions, grounding the school’s foundation in the education landscape. The staff too were engaged in several professional development programmes and in 2003, the school was awarded the People Developer Standard from Spring Singapore. In 2004, the school celebrated 5 Years of Unity with the production of the musical “To Oz in Unity” and a reunion dinner.

UNITY SECONDARY SCHOOL

On 19 December 2005, Miss Tan Siew Piang took over as the second principal of the school. The school was on its journey to achieving school excellence. The comprehensive Character Development Programme where the students grow up to have strong morals, values, good character and able to lead their peers and serve the community, saw the school receiving its Character Development Award in 2007. The staff and students went beyond borders to engage in immersion programmes in China, India and conducted field studies and learning journeys to Asia-Pacific and Europe. The beginnings of a strong aesthetics programme was established with events such as Unity Talent and Rhapsody.

In addition, in recognition for its strength in co-curricular activities, the school was acknowledged as a niche school in Basketball in 2009. In the same year, the school celebrated 10 Years of Unity with a Fun Fair. The school advisory committee (SAC) also organised the inaugural SAC Golf Tournament to raise funds for the students who need financial support.

Unity Secondary School welcomed its third Principal, Mr Chan Ying Yin on 15 December 2009. A holistic student development framework was formulated to guide the school in Academic Education and Character and Citizenship Education. With the focus on leadership learning as a key platform for student development, the framework espouses the aspirations of every Unitian to be a leader of self and others. In 2010, the school hosted one of the legs of the torch relay, the Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame, for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games.

In 2012, the six uniformed groups secured the prestigious Sustained Achievement Awards and subsequently was acknowledged as a niche school for Uniform Groups due to their consistent excellent performance over the years.

In 2013, the school achieved the National Arts Education Award (Spark Award) and the School Green Awards (Lotus Award) and was recertified as an organization with the People Developer Standard. The school also implemented two School Distinctive Programmes: Applied Learning Programme (ALP)-“Inspire through Agro-Bio Science & Technology and Learning for Life Programme(LLP)-“Lead through Outdoor and Sporting Adventures”.

In 2014, as part of celebrating 15 Years of Unity, the school set two records in the Singapore Book of Records. The first record was for the most number of people bouncing basketballs simultaneously, called “The Unity Bounce”.

The second record was for creating the largest thumbprint art called “Thumbs-up in Unity”. The staff, students and parents also created 1000 fonts of Unity which, when pieced together, formed a magnificent art work that depicts the strong pride of Unity. This piece of art was displayed as part of our “Unity Spirit Art Exhibition” during the musical Rhapsody in Unity III.

On 15 December 2015, Unity came under the leadership of Mdm Aini Maarof. The previous principals have laid a strong foundation for Unity to deliver holistic education for all Unitians.

Building on this, the school continues to strive towards the School Mission to “Develop Unitians to be Resilient and Future-Ready with the Passion to Serve and Lead”. The curriculum and co-curriculum programmes were strengthened to provide opportunities locally and abroad to develop in Unitians the 21st Century Competencies of global awareness and cross cultural skills and sensitivities. In line with the school’s philosophy “Every Unitian is unique, has the potential and can be an inspiration”, the school established the Talent Development Programme to nurture students’ talent and interest in their areas of passion such as English (Leaders of English Programme), Maths (Advanced Mathematics Programme), Science (Young Scientist Programme) and Humanities (Humanities Programme). The strong belief in holistic student development led to the strengthening and rejuvenating of the aesthetics education programme.

The school also believes strongly in staff professional development and provided opportunities for staff to horne their leadership and pedagogical skills in conferences locally and overseas. It has since started its journey on Growth mindset for staff and students in 2019 to establish a strong positive culture in school.

The Parent Support Group (PSG) and Alumni have also developed a strong partnership with Unity, collaborating to enhance the learning experience of the students to soar together to greater heights.

QUEEN’S COMMONWEALTH ESSAY COMPETITION 2018 Junior Topic 1: What does a ‘safer future’ mean to you and your community?

“Today is going to be my first day in college in this city!” I said to myself. I was getting ready to leave when my mum said “Have fun at school okay?”

I nodded and went to school.

We smiled at each other and soon after that, she brought me to the back of the school which was empty but beautiful.

It had many flowers of different colours and she said, “I love flowers so I planted many of them here where no one knows except for you and I.” I was happy when she showed me this place it is like a secret place. I had so much fun with her but the next day…

When I finally reached school, I was so shocked on how big the school was. I had never seen such a huge school as I use to live in a little city that only had a few children so the schools there were small. I was so mesmerised by it that i tripped and fell, I heard little voices of laughter but luckily, there was a kind person who helped me up and asked, “Are you okay?” I nodded. I noticed her skin was darker but actually, I thought it was quite cool!

Today,I was so excited to see my first friend at school again today! We agreed to meet at the back of the school and when I got there, everything was trashed and destroyed and Madhu was kneeling on the floor crying. I quickly ran towards “Thanks for that! I started talking bad about the Trio and soon after,i received a letter to meet at the rooftop. Madhu said maybe it’s a confession but i know it’s not. After school, I went to meet them.

“Fine! ” I shouted and went to the principal’s office and ask for permission to have ten minutes of the assembly tomorrow to speak to the whole school and he agreed.

“I’ll make you a deal, get half the school’s population to agree with you, then I will stop.” he said.

The next day, I went up on stage to have a speech on racism and what i’m trying to do. Surprisingly at the end of the speech, many people cheered for me. Madhu thanked me for doing this. In less than a week, there was already more than half of the school who signed my petition.

Junior Topic 4: Our Common Earth Our Uncommonly Common Earth

The door handle shook and the door swung open slyly with a long screech.

My eyes lit up with hope. “She’s here!

She really is!” I exclaimed, expecting the presences of that motherly figure I lacked since birth. A cold gust of wind entered and there I saw that person, my demon. He staggered to the side as he slammed the door shut. “ Clean the house won’t you? Look at this filth. Your mom is not coming back anymore. You are stuck with me whether you like it or not. Don’t you dare glare at me. Keep that big swelling eyes down. I am the one who suffer the most, taking care of this thing that calls me father.” Shoving me aside, he smashed the clock onto the ground. “Clean that up” The clock is dead. The unsettling ticking stopped, its big round pure white face filled with golden numeric facial features looked like an unrecognised person who was burnt in a fire, its long two way parted moustache and its talkative voice that could be heard sixty times a minute or as I would like to call it, sixty times a year, stopped. I rise, just like how the demon rose up against me. She will protect me, I know she will. I shot out of the house, rain lashing down, stinging my face as my legs function on its own. “ I will not go there! She won’t protect me!” my legs continued striding towards her, as

Shaking. Each tick on the clock caused a new set of emotions to overcome me however, each tick felt familiar yet it still sent new thoughts to my mind. I stared at the clock willing for it to go faster, to end my agonising pain, to release me from my demon that holds me handicap. Light bulbs begin to lose its light overtime, ants being stepped on as every tick went by, a brown leaf lets go of its life support as it slowly spirals to the ground. “Tick!” another ant is dead. “Tick!” my mind gets wilder and wilder. “Tick!” What is this nerve racking uncontrollable pain that is drawing each breath painfully breathless? “Tick!” When can I become that leaf and let go of my life support, my pain, my demon. There is no future, no hope for me. No goals, no laughter, just the same demon, the same pressure and weight that had been holding me down for the past ten years of my thirteen year-old life.

Holding onto the only support I have left, the banister, I stood up. I stared at the door and it gave me a little wave, its two small windows glistering as it beckons me to take a step forward. “ No! Not Today. Not like every other day. They won’t accept me. She won’t accept me.”

I need to start afresh. I can’t have a drunk man as a husband and to be known that I have a child with him?

For shame. Now be gone and i don’t ever want to see you near me again is that understood?” With the flick of her perfectly tied ponytail, she slammed the door, the door of happiness and hope in my face.

Shaking. I wring my hand dry as I walk towards this group of merry people I call family now. My step-siblings, sliding down the banister and running towards the warm of the person i use to trust- my father. Before he married this woman, my demon. For twelve years of my thirteen years-old life, I had been as merry as a free luck. This barbarian, tore our family apart, into shreds just so she will not have to feel lonely for the fact that she was a divorcee since ten years ago.

The clock ticked on. I could feel myself getting older, closer to death, something I have always been wishing for after my mother fell ill and father getting controlled like a puppet on strings by this demon. “Tick!” I looked out and saw a brown leaf spiral onto the ground.

“Tick!” my anger grew wilder than ever.

“Tick!” the suffocating pain stabs through me like a mad clown and its happiness.

“Tick!” each breath triggered a new set of pain and agony. “Tick!” it is time for me to leave. I stood upright shakily, walking quietly to ensure my demon is still asleep. Turning the doorknob quietly, my palms sweat buckets while my head whirled due to the adrenaline pumping all around my body. “Creak!” like a hungry dog who just heard the doorbell, my demon shot right up and

So I can treat you however I want.” my shaking pupils focused on her blood red lips as a smile spread across her face.

Grabbing his arms, we looked into each others eyes and saw the demon controlling us, the life and future we were heading. Hand in hand , we stood up, holding onto each other, heading towards our now common future and our now common earth.

I need to run, away from this demon, away from my uncommon life. “Father, save me!” I pleaded. “ this is your life, your future now sweetie. Your mother here is just trying to teach you manners after she saw you attempting to escape from the house.” it was like as though a cobra

Junior Topic 4: Our Common Earth Warm sunlight filled the sky, its orange hue illuminating the dry land. Like a huge yellow yolk, the sun drips hope into my world, leaving dappled shadows on my clothes. I reached out and squeezed Gil’s hand. She looked up, surprised.

Such displays of affection were rare in my family. My elder sister’s face was similarly filled with apprehension and hope, as we pondered over our new future. I hugged my knees tightly - maybe this was a new beginning, a new life for us. I grinned as I watched over my younger siblings, sure that colour will soon be brought back into their wan cheeks.

I closed my eyes as our wooden cart thudded heavily down the road. The wheels creaked despairingly, the weight of five people too much for it to bear as it travelled through the rubble. At least the twins weren’t crying. Tam and Jam were sleeping like angels. I stroked and patted them sadly, their identical faces bearing too much resemblance to their father whom i could not help thinking about. We had received the notice a week ago, stating that my father had nobly sacrificed his life to defend the country. We all cried that evening, not believing that yet another puzzle piece in our family was gone after my elder brother, Fai, died from a gunshot wound last year. A tear traced down my cheek as I quickly shook the memory of Fai out of my head - his pale face white as a sheet and crimson red seeping onto his shirt. I struggled to keep him awake while volunteers administered first-aid. It was too late. Gunshots like this brought war upon innocent civilians. I hope at least people in the OCE have learnt to accept each other so we not have to face discrimination again. My family is Asian, and I have heard far too many comments labelling us as ‘yellow freaks’.

The governments around the globe had signed a treaty agreeing to a new project, OCE. Standing for Our Common Earth, the project was initiated after wars led to grievous damage and an uncertain future. OCE aimed to cultivate respect among cultures and to end racial discrimination. Now, a year after the project’s initiation, we were on our way to join the small community in Bratislava. Not many were willing to participate, and those who did often went home in less than a week, unable to fully accept other communities into their lives.

A world devoid of terrorism and discrimination, is it too good to be true?

I could envision it, the sun warm and comforting, its rays reflecting upon the peaceful blue sea, the laughter from the carefree children, cultures mixed and intertwined, humanity recognising that everybody is indeed the same.

eyes rested upon a tall girl, lean and tan. Eyes twinkling, she held up a box of food for us. A Cambodian dish sat inside, warm and inviting. It is ‘prahok’, she told us, a dish containing chilli, fermented fish paste and other spices. We took it gratefully as she offered another box to the family beside her, who in turn gave her a bowl of piping hot Indian curry and steamed fragrant rice. I saw children of different communities playing tag together, running without a care in the world. Flowers bloomed in my heart again. Maybe the world has yet to agree on a common future, a common earth.

But there is still hope.

The reality was disappointing.

A huge stab into my heart, as tears burned in my eyes, I was too overwhelmed to speak. My hopes had crashed as I watched this community in silence, divided by their groups and cultures.

An invisible cold wall divided the OCE. Hatred and doubt penetrated through death glares and hard shoves. I walked shakily with my family to an unclaimed spot, refusing to believe the way things were.

A patchwork quilt, sewn together, black to white, brown to yellow, green to blue.

Different patches yet the same. If the threads are strong, if the materials are held together firmly, then the quilt is together as one, enveloping the world, providing a shared warmth and comfort.

No, it cannot be.

Senior Topic 4: Future generations have rights which should be defended. Discuss.

The Oxford Dictionary meaning for the word ‘right’ is ‘a moral or legal entitlement to have or do something.’

All of us have rights. The most basic one being human rights. The United Nations defines human rights ‘rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status’. These rights include the right to work, the right for education, the right for women. Shockingly, despite the many movements and the many campaigns held over centuries, there are still women and girls in parts of the world being trafficked, forced into labour, forced into prostitution, barred or judged from making personal choices for themselves. If nothing is done, what would happen to future generations of females? Will we be able to put an end to the suffering of these women and girls?

If that was the case, I think women would not have been told to shut up when speaking out for our rights, they would not have been afraid that they would be taken lightly, there would be no such term as ‘suffragette’.

In her speech ‘Women’s Rights Are Human Rights’, Hillary Clinton said, ‘Let it be that human rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights once and for all. Let us not forget that among those rights are the right to speak freely — and the right to be heard.’ While What about the society then? Bayangkan jika setiap sekolah hanya tumpukan kepada pencapaian akademik. Sudah tentu suasana sekolah agak membosankan. Dengan adanya kegiatan ko-kurikulum, para pelajar dapat meraih pembelajaran yang lebih holistik dan seimbang kerana tidak ada tumpuan yang berat kepada akademik.

Antara faedah yang boleh diraih daripada kegiatan ko-kurikular ialah jaringan sosial yang lebih luas, pembentukan sahsiah yang mulia, tekanan dapat dikurangkan dan kemahiran baharu dapat diperoleh.

Mata bonus sangat penting kerana jika para pelajar tidak mendapat keputusan akademik yang memuaskan, mata bonus boleh membantu mereka.Mata bonus yang diperolehi juga bergantung dengan kedatangan pelajar.Jika kedatangan pelajar itu tidak konsisten, guru-guru tidak akan memberi mereka mata bonus.

Dengan itu, ia penting untuk pelajar menghadiri kegiatan ko-kurikulum.

Akhir sekali, apabila seorang pelajar menjadi ahli yang cemerlang, mereka boleh mendapat mata bonus.Mata bonus ini boleh digunakan selepas tamat peperiksaan GCE Peringkat-O untuk melayakkan diri ke politeknik atau maktab rendah pilihan pelajar.

Mata bonus boleh diperolehi dengan menyertai aktiviti-aktiviti kegiatan kokurikulum seperti pertandingan atau kerja sukarela. Dengan itu, kegiatan ko-kurikulum mereka dapat membawa faedah kepada pelajar apabila mereka mendapat mata bonus.

Ucapan Tentang Kepentingan Keselamatan Siber Selamat pagi dan salam sejahtera tuan pengetua, guru-guru dan pelajar-pelajar yang saya hormati sekalian. Hampir setiap hari penyebaran berita palsu berlaku. Masalah ini bukan perkara yang asing lagi dalam masyarakat Singapura. Kehadiran media sosial pula memburukkan lagi keadaan kerana sebarang berita palsu yang dimuat naik di media sosial akan tersebar seluruh dunia dalam masa yang singkat. Oleh itu, kita harus meningkatkan kesedaran tentang kepentingan keselamatan siber.

Singapura segera membalas dengan memuatnaikkan komen-komen negatif tentang orang Filipino. Hal ini telah menimbulkan kemarahan orang-orang Filipino yang turut mula memuatnaikkan komen-komen negatif untuk mempertahankan kaum mereka. Beberapa hari kemudian, cerita tentang keluarga Filipino itu dikatakan tidak benar dan hanya dikongsi untuk hiburan. Lantas, berita palsu dapat memecahbelahkan sesebuah masyarakat.

Selain itu, berita palsu juga boleh membawa kerugian kepada perniagaan.

Tamsilnya, pada tahun 2014, satu skim penipuan telah mengundang orang ramai untuk menyertai tinjauan bagi mendapatkan baucer ‘NTUC’ bernilai $1000. Walaupun ‘NTUC Fairprice’ tidak bertanggungjawab dalam penipuan itu, hal itu dapat menjejas reputasi syarikat itu kerana telah mencetus rasa sangsi dalam kalangan pelanggannya.

Berita palsu merupakan sejenis propaganda yang terdiri daripada penyebaran maklumat salah. Berita palsu selalunya mengandungi isiisi yang negatif yang dapat menjejas keharmonian dalam masyarakat.

Oleh itu, berita palsu membawa risiko kepada masyarakat yang berbilang kaum di Singapura. Sebagai contoh, sebuah lelaman “The Real Singapore” telah mengongsi cerita tentang keluarga Filipino yang mengadu tentang warganegara Singapura yang memainkan lagu terlalu kuat semasa parayaan Thaipusam. Elsa Mickayla was born in Jakarta and raised in Singapore. A passionate singer-songwriter, composer and arranger, who grew up listening to all types of music. She has performed in numerous events such as Singapore Night Festival, Families For Life, Beerfest, Universal Studio Singapore, Rock & Indie Festival, SCAPE Collision and others.

Besides dedicating her time to pop
