Brende also highlighted India's status as the largest democracy, an open society with entrepreneurs, innovators, and free speech. He commended India's thriving startup ecosystem and suggested that other developing countries can learn from it. The WEF expects India's economy to grow by almost 6 percent this year, the highest among major economies.

India achieved a significant milestone in its 5G network deployment with the inauguration of the latest 5G site in Gangotri. The event was attended by Union Minister for Communications and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The number of 5G sites in India has now exceeded 200,000. Mr. Vaishnaw expressed his pride in this accomplishment, stating that a new 5G site is being activated every minute. He emphasized that India aims to not only keep pace with the world in 5G but also take the lead in 6G technology. He further highlighted India's transformation from a technology importer to a technology exporter. The deployment of the first 100,000 5G sites took place within five months of the Prime Minister's launch of the service on October 1. The subsequent 100,000 sites were rolled out in just three months.

TCS Receives $1.83 Billion BSNL Contract for 4G Services

State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has given a consortium led by India's Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) an order for more than 150 billion rupees ($1.83 billion) to build a nationwide 4G network. The firm announced this on 22nd May. The decision comes as Indian IT service providers struggle with a lack of demand. The biggest IT services company in India, TCS, has been dealing with pressure in its $1 billion or more "large deals" segment as clients in key markets in the U.S. and Europe put off decisions due to a weakening macroeconomic climate. The corporation stated that its order book was $10 billion when it released weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter results. Additionally, it warned that deal closings for the current quarter could drop to $7 billion to $9 billion. In a deal worth 80 billion rupees, it was rehired last year to manage the nation's Passport Seva Programme.

Rs. 2,000 Note Withdrawal to Improve Liquidity, Ease Short-Term Rates: Experts

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to withdraw its highest denomination currency note from circulation, which is expected to have positive effects on the banking system. Analysts and bankers believe that this move will improve liquidity and reduce short-term interest rates. The RBI will begin withdrawing 2,000-rupee notes from circulation, but they will still be considered legal tender. Individuals holding these notes can either deposit them or exchange them for smaller denominations by September 30, 2023. The total value of these notes currently in circulation is 3.6 trillion rupees ($44.02 billion), but not all of this amount will be deposited in banks. Estimates suggest that liquidity could improve by around 1 trillion rupees, depending on the depositors' behavior. However, different research firms provide varying projections, with potential liquidity impacts ranging from 400 billion rupees to 1.1 trillion rupees.

PVR INOX to Shut 50

Loss-Making Cinemas Over

Next 6 Months

PVR INOX Ltd, a multiplex operator formed by the merger of India's top two companies, has announced a quarterly loss of 3.33 billion rupees ($40.72 million). The loss was primarily due to one-time impairment charges and expenses associated with the planned closure of certain cinemas. As a result, the company incurred an accelerated depreciation charge of 105.8 million rupees for 50 cinemas that are expected to shut down within the next six months. The cinema industry in India has faced significant challenges since the onset of the pandemic, as lockdown measures forced people to stay home and increased the popularity of streaming services among movie enthusiasts. In response to these difficulties, PVR and Inox joined forces. Despite the challenging circumstances, PVR INOX has outlined its plans to open 150-175 additional screens during fiscal year 2024. However, the company also incurred an impairment charge of 108.2 million rupees related to a suspended project in a Bengaluru mall. This announcement marks the first financial report following the completion of the merger between PVR and INOX.

Francis Warns Pets Must Not Replace Children in Italy

Pope Francis has expressed concern about the increasing difficulty of starting a family in Italy, stating that it has become a significant challenge that only the wealthy can afford. Speaking at a conference on Italy's demographic crisis, he noted that pets are replacing children in many households. The country has one of the lowest fertility rates in the European Union, with births dropping to a new low of below 400,000 last year. The Pope attributed this decline to a lack of hope among younger generations, who face uncertainty, fragility, and precariousness due to difficulties in finding stable jobs, high rents, and insufficient wages. The Pope shared an incident where a woman asked him to bless her baby, only to reveal a small dog instead. Expressing his frustration, he questioned why someone would prioritize a pet over hungry children. This remark received applause from the audience.

Turkish Election Victory for Erdogan Leaves Nation Divided

Recep Tayyip Erdogan's supporters celebrated late into the night after he secured another five years as Turkey's president. Erdogan proclaimed that the entire nation of 85 million had won, but his call for unity seemed insincere as he mocked his opponent Kemal Kilicdaroglu and targeted a jailed Kurdish leader and the LGBT community. Kilicdaroglu did not explicitly concede defeat and complained about the unfairness of the election, alleging that Erdogan's party had utilized state resources against him. Erdogan secured just over 52% of the vote, but nearly half of the electorate did not support his authoritarian vision. Although Kilicdaroglu managed to force Erdogan into a runoff, he was unable to close the significant gap in votes and fell more than two million votes behind. Erdogan celebrated his victory with speeches to cheering supporters in Istanbul and from his palace in Ankara, taunting Kilicdaroglu with the words "Bye, bye, Kemal."

France Destroys 35,000 ‘Champagne’ Soda Bottles

French border police in Le Havre have destroyed around 35,000 bottles of a soda drink that falsely claimed to be champagne. The bottles, originating from Haiti and containing a bright orange liquid, were seized in October 2021 after customs officials noticed the label "Couronne Fruit Champagne." The use of the term "champagne" is reserved exclusively for sparkling wine products from the French Champagne region, according to France's Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) system, which grants exclusive rights to certain geographical indications. The bottles were intended for sale in the French market. The destruction of these bottles reinforces the importance of the AOC regulation and serves to protect the reputation of the appellation, as stated by Charles Goemaere, the director-general of the Champagne Committee. This action is part of the ongoing effort to combat the misuse of the Champagne name, which has been protected since 1844.

Into Recession as Inflation Hits Economy

Germany Falls

Germany has entered into a recession in the first quarter of the year due to persistent inflation, according to updated growth data. The country's economy contracted by 0.3% between January and March, following a 0.5% contraction in the previous three months. The halt in Russian gas supplies after the invasion of Ukraine also had a significant impact on Germany. High inflation, with an April rate of 7.2%, has led to reduced household spending on various goods and weaker industrial orders. The revised figures indicated declines in household and government spending, as well as a drop in car sales after the reduction of government grants for electric and hybrid vehicles. Private sector investment and exports showed some improvement but were insufficient to prevent Germany from entering a recession. Although the recession was less severe than expected, analysts predict weak economic performance to continue in the second quarter of 2023. The Bundesbank anticipates modest growth in the April to June quarter, driven by an industry rebound offsetting stagnant consumer spending.

Gokulam GopalanThe Man And His Empire

hen I decided I should become a businessman, I did not have any confusion on what business I should start.” Every word spoken by Mr Gokulam Gopalan had a sense of iron-clad certainty to it. The world lacked certainty and people who would stand their ground, regardless of the circumstance. Be it his principles or actions, they were set in stone.

But the man he is today didn’t emerge overnight, it was molded through the passage of time and space. Born in a small village near Vadakara in Kerala as A.M Gopalan, he grew up much like everyone else. Chathu and Madhu, his parents were humble people. After securing

“Wan undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Kerala University, he set foot into the rat race we refer to as ‘earning a living’. With a bit of his heart set on acting, he decided to move into Chennai, a city where film was more than simply motion pictures. Chennai welcomed him with open arms. As a city which ranked people according to their efforts and not simply their caste, religion or political ideology; Mr Gopalan fit right in. Following that, he tied the knot with Jalaja, and together they were blessed with three children: Baiju Gopalan, Lijisha Gopalan, and Shabareesh Gopalan.

It was during one of his days in Chennai that he met a doctor who happened to be the one who’d incidentally set a new spin on his life.

The doctor found the young man impressive and offered him his first job as a medical representative. Realizing that his financial situation was rather dire, he wondered and pondered on how he could ‘earn’. And he decided to do what he, his father and everyone in his hometown knew; chit business. He established a mini-chit fund with a mere ten members and a monthly installment of Rs. 60 per person. The little startup which made a bit of extra cash turned into one which made an annual turnover of over Rs. 500 crore. And from a witty financial plan emerged Gokulam Group, an empire which conquered indeed. Currently, his chit fund and finance company, Gokulam Chit Funds and Finance Private Limited, is around

As a follower of Sri Narayana Guru, Mr Gopalan didn’t fail to realize the delicate importance of education in the modern world. Education wasn’t simply a way to earn a living in the future, but a way to view and understand the world for everything it really is. The world is in dire need of people who would change its doomed fate, and change comes about after an understanding of reality.

But education, higher education, in particular, didn’t fall into everyone’s lap. It was for the wealthy man. Mr Gopalan found the reality troubling and strived toward a world where the common man could learn. Currently, he oversees a number of educational institutions around the globe, with a focus on the Middle East. One of the Group's largest contributions is the Dovecote Green Primary School in Dubai. The name Sree Gokulam Public School is now well-known and esteemed throughout Kerala. In the state, the group operates more than seven schools and three arts colleges.

While education stands upon a pedestal, alongside rests another giant; healthcare. With every day that passes by, humanity learns the subtleties of human life and how it could

be wiped out in seconds. COVID-19 arrived as a mere virus and departed along with a few million lives. While money lay as an iron curtain for many, the lack of hospital beds remained an equally high wall for the patients to leap over. The pandemic articulated the extent of our healthcare services and how the world was in desperate need of more people in the healthcare industry. But it wasn’t a mission for one, it was for humanity as a whole. Mr Gopalan did his part, ensuring the world was a little better off than it was yesterday. The Sree Gokulam Medical College and Research Foundation is a valuable asset to the state's medical education sector. The Group's college provides world-class medical education and is one of the state's most promising medical schools. There is a separate block for the elderly at the medical college. The block largely serves the underprivileged. The Gokulam Group owns GG Hospital (Trivandrum), one of the fastest developing multi-speciality hospitals in this region of the world.

Amongst all of the good Mr Gopalan had done for the world, he made time to return to his interests as well. As a prominent producer as well as actor, Mr Gopalan left his footprint in the film industry as well. A number of films Malayalis hold close to their heart like Kerala Varma

Pazhassi Raja and Kayamkulam Kochunni carry the Gokulam Group’s production name. Mr. Gopalan was notable for being the producer of the first film directed by Tamil Superstar Vijay's father, Chandrasekhar. He has also acted in a few films named Netaji, Pathonpatham Noottandu and Pakalum Paathiravum. Alongside the film industry, the Gokulam Group holds a significant place in television as a major stakeholder in a rapidly growing Malayalam Television Channel, Flowers TV, and a Malayalam news channel, 24. In the midst of it all, Mr Gopalan got the opportunity to be a distributor for the latest TV series, Maha Guru, which aired on Kaumudy TV. As a producer, he has debuted in no less than 15 films. He served as a film distributor for two films, two television serials, and a television series as well.

Some of his hospitality ventures include Gokulam Park (Chennai), Gokulam Park (Coimbatore), Gokulam Park Sabari (OMR, Chennai), Gokulam Park Hotel & Convention Centre (Kochi), Sree Gokulam Nalanda Resorts (Nileswaram), Sree Gokulam Vanamala (Guruvayur), Sree Gokulam Residency (Thrissur), Hotel Gokulam Fort (Thalassery), and MSR Hotel and Spa (Bengaluru).

business, hospitality, entertainment, education, logistics, food and manufacture; Sree Gokulam Group of Companies stands out front as a mission that succeeded. Providing employment to over 11,000 people, hundreds of families earn their daily bread under the establishment of Mr Gopalan. Some of his notable achievements include Chairman of Sree Narayana Sahodara Dharmma Vedhi (SNSDV) and the president of Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP Yogam) branch in Chennai. He also received the renowned "GEM OF INDIA,'96" and UDYOG RATHNA,'97 awards in

honour of his contribution to society through his business ventures. He was also honoured with the State Forum of Bankers Club's "Business Man of the Year" award. The award was presented by former President Ram Nath Kovind and recognises Shri Gokulam Gopalan’s invaluable contributions to the financial sector in Kerala, even during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic. Another one of his notable accomplishments is receiving the Multibillionaire Business Achiever (MBA) Award.

For the readers out there seeking inspiration, take it from the humble

young man who arrived in Chennai with nothing more than a bit of will to make something for himself. The man who he has grown into today didn’t have his cards all lined up and neither did he know every step of the way. But none of it stopped him getting to where he is today.

As a man who considers “social service a divine practice”, Mr Gopalan has indeed served humanity. With an effort to grow society and aid the needy, the story of Mr Gopalan isn’t just a tale of human service but also one that narrates the unimaginable potential of working towards one’s goals

It is my view that against the backdrop of the banking sector troubles, ongoing geopolitical tensions and growing risks to global growth, gold’s moment under the sun as among the safest of safe haven assets has amplified.

‘Sell in May and Go Away’? No Way for Gold

The adage may once again prove axiomatic for other financial assets but not for gold

The popular maxim, ‘Sell in May and go away’ is turning out to be true for most assets including stocks, bonds and even for several currencies. The maxim refers to the historically observed practice of a broadbased sell-off in financial assets as investors rush to book profit in May only to return to the markets after

October. In other words, it refers to the past instances of the financial markets remaining weak and volatile between May and October. This year too, this maxim is proving to be on the mark as stock markets across the globe are witnessing profit booking by investors while the ruction in the bond market remains elevated as the interest rate cycle is yet to peak

with central banks keeping the rate corridor open.

A nuanced reading shows that all the major stock market indices are flashing red with widely tracked Dow Jones industrial average shedding 255.59 points or 0.77 per cent to close at 32,799.92 while broader index S&P 500 losing 30.34 points or 0.73 per cent to close at 4,115.24

BUSINESS
20 June - July 2023

points overnight as of May 25, 2023. The tech-heavy Nasdaq too closed on similar lines tanking 76.08 points or 0.61 percent at 12,484.16 points, mirroring the weak sentiments in the share markets cutting across segments, sectors and themes. Other major global stock indices such as FTSE, Dax, Kospi, Nikki 225, Shanghai Composite, Taiwan Weighted and Hong Kong were all sliding to lower levels through the trading days in May.

Indian stock indices too proved

to be no exception to the `Sell in May and Go Away’ praxis and have fallen all through most of the trading days in May. For instance, BSE Sensex was down 174.1 points or -0.28% at 61,773.78 points while the broader index CNX Nifty 50 was down 51.25 points or 0.28% at 18,234.15 during the morning trade on May 25. There is an array of reasons for the weaker performance of financial assets, especially the stocks, to remain volatile with a downward bias through May this year.

Growing risks to global growth, and hence corporate earnings, could be held as the major culprit, while adding to the May mayhem in global stocks is the deadlock over the US debt limits talks. What added fuel to the fire is the decision by rating agency Fitch to put US credit on the negative watch list that stoked fears of a possible downgrade of the world’s largest economy’s debt.

However, the yellow metal remained as an island of stability amid a broad-based sell-off and

21 June - July 2023

volatility in financial assets through May. After taking a breather in April, gold resumed its northbound journey as it is fast regaining its natural status as the safe haven at times of economic uncertainty, hedge against inflation and above all wild swings in stock indices. There is another, and perhaps a more important factor, that is driving up gold demand world over – the burgeoning demand from major central banks who want to bolster their reserves by switching from the US greenback to good old asset, gold. This in fact adds one more source for gold demand which looks promising.

This new-found source of demand for gold is slated to go up

tremendously as more nations look to settle their import and export trade in local currencies. While the explanation for why central banks are ditching the US dollar for gold to shore up their war chest is well documented and hence risks repetition, some data on central banks turning bullish on gold may be in order here.

According to the World Gold Council’s latest Gold Demand Trends report, the Central banks helped boost demand by adding 228 tonnes to global reserves, which is a record. These sustained and significant purchases from the apex banks underscore gold’s role in international reserve portfolios dur-

ing times of market volatility and elevated risk.

It is my view that against the backdrop of the banking sector troubles, ongoing geopolitical tensions and growing risks to global growth, gold’s moment under the sun as among the safest of safe haven assets has amplified. The buying binge from central banks adds one more leg to the gold’s rally. Going forward, I feel central bank’s buying is likely to remain strong and will be a key driver for gold demand through the running fiscal. To conclude, the increasing risk-off sentiments among investors and elevated central bank demand is likely to keep gold the most sought-after asset class

Indian stock indices too proved to be no exception to the `Sell in May and Go Away’ praxis and have fallen all through most of the trading days in May.

A young professional who moves out of the portals of formal education seeking a career does not have to depend on building a life as an employee, if she has the ability, know-how, and a bright idea.

Evaluating Ideas and Ability to Institutionalize

It is the age of ideas and startups. An interesting idea is no more a figment of imagination and the business ecosystem gives us an opportunity to execute the idea by building institutions of wealth creation and service delivery around it. A young professional who moves out of the portals of formal education seeking a career does not have to depend on building a life as an employee, if she has the ability, know-how, and a bright idea. There is guidance, support and finance available for the bright ideas.

But the tragedy of surfeit of opportunity is the ‘curse of the plenty’. We see many ideas but the lack of focus, intent to delve deeper into the nitty gritty along with hesitance to work out the details of execution continue to downplay the ideas. Efforts to build ideas ground up also

get lost in the ‘clouds of valuation’ and the discussion of exit before the ‘entry’ is complete. The confusions are often multifarious. What constitutes a good idea? What are the essential components of scaling the idea into an organisation? What are the dos and don'ts? These are just perhaps the tip of the iceberg – the startup entrepreneurs and investors grapple would be a gazillion more. There is ample advice available as well. From profound theory based on the successes of large organisations across industries to veteran investors who have amassed massive wealth for their portfolio of investments and the entrepreneurs, they placed the bet on. But often one can see some common threads which run through these pearls of wisdom and here are some top-of-the-mind points to ponder not just for the en-

trepreneur but also the investor. Product Market Fit ( PMF)

Popularised by Marc Andreessen in a celebrated post titled ‘The Only Thing That Matters’, PMF has been one of the most discussed concepts in start-up literature. Marc Andreessen’s definition of PMF is “Product/ market fit means being in a good market with a product that can satisfy that market”. Blume Ventures Partner Sajit Pai further elucidates PMF. Product market fit is actually a fusion of two concepts – Product Problem fit and the Go to Market strategy and Market fit. The first concept to ponder upon is whether the product/service/solution matches the problem and is able to adequately address the complexities of the problem. Does it inherently have the capability to address and scale related complications? The second

BUSINESS
24 June - July 2023

part of the concept stresses on using the right ‘Go To Market’ GTM to reach the target addressable market. How have you identified your total addressable market? How are you reaching your customer segment?

Technical Robustness

The efficacy of the solution and the framework for delivering the solution is important. The solution, whether a product or a service needs the heft to manage variations, have the architecture of repeatability, and

the flexibility to adapt to feedback and constructive criticism loops. This often requires a team who are dedicated, ring-fenced through smart HR policies and provided the right engagement triggers to build and rebuild the solution.

Strategic Orientation

In the initial days of the idea, the scope is often limited, and rightly so. But the charm is building scope and capability to address varied issues and pre-empting the problem

by also evolving with the solution. A strategic outlook indicates framing problems from multiple perspectives and using data to figure out different scenarios. Strategic Orientation forces companies to constantly identify risks and plan around mitigation proactively.

The Team

If one engages with investors and pops the question of what they really look for in various potential investments – ‘team’ will be one of

25 June - July 2023

the most common factors that they would delineate. In most cases, investors don't have the time to evaluate numbers, business plans and business strategies – they would then develop a gut feel of the idea which often is the impression they paint about the promoter/team. This factor is critical – all doubts of success vanish if there is a capable and articulate team who can infuse confidence.

Operational and Financial Metrics

Dashboards and simple measures to evaluate the business is critical for every idea. How does one view success? What is the

extent of failure? What are five measures that you would use to evaluate businesses on a regular basis ? This is not about complicated finance and business models – These are simple measures that paint a picture of the health of the business. It is not just paramount for others but also for the team to understand and course correct as and when.

Sense of Urgency

A great idea and an average idea is not often the quality of the idea but the urgency of communication and focus to accomplish allied tasks quickly. The relentless focus on execution often separates

the also-rans from the winners. The throughput time of activities and the zest with which we implement them are critical to achieving goals and fulfilling the promise of the product or service.

This is just a glimpse into some of the areas one should ponder upon. Whatever point you add to the framework has shades of the concept in these areas. These frameworks help you evaluate your own ventures and also to sieve through the various proposals you receive as an investor. It will help you frame your options and detail the reasons for selection or rejection in mind

Vetting the Innovative Path for Effective Veterinary Care

The CEO of VetCetera Health Care, Manoj Kumar, owns the credit for finding new frontiers in animal care solutions by combining science and technology to come out with lifesaving diagnostic kits and therapeutics, which bring a smile to both pet owners and farmers. In an exclusive interview with Unique Times (UT), he elaborates on his decision to foray into this niche segment and his innovative products.

Manoj Kumar, who began his decades-long career as a medical representative for the famous pharma firm Cipla in 1998, boldly took the road less travelled by when he decided to foray into the animal healthcare sector. His business acumen and farsightedness honed by several years of experience in the Middle East made him identify the rich potential of research and development (R&D) in veterinary products.

Quitting his well-paying job in the Sultanate of Oman, he forayed into veterinary medicine and diagnostics by starting VetCetera Animal Health way back in 2018 by manufacturing a few products for clients. Seeing the vast potential for growth in veterinary care, he lost no time in roping in R&D to come out with cutting-edge therapeutics and diag-

nostic tools.

When asked about the inception of the new venture, Manoj Kumar told UT that it was in 2022 that VetCetera Health Care was born. Its top-notch, cost-effective products soon became a hit so much so the brand name became a force to reckon with in the veterinary healthcare segment in India.

Answering the question about the product which made VetCetera a formidable presence in the market, the CEO said it was WoundCet--a one-stop herbal panacea for fungal infections, mouth ulcers, wounds, insect attacks among others in pets and farm animals. It was a meeting with a veteran commissioner of the FDA of the Government of Gujarat, which gave Manoj the idea to come out with a unique product.

“During the discussion with him, I found that he had a patented onestop solution for almost all ailments plaguing pets. We developed it and thus WoundCet was born. It has been in the market for three years and we sell around 1.2 lakh tubes a month at 120 rupees per 50 gm. It is effective, sans side effects and economic as well,” he quipped.

He added that they decided to slash the price of the product without any compromise on its quality and there has been no looking back. “This gave a shot in the arm to the publicity of VetCetera which began to be noticed in the vet market.” Today, it has seven exclusive products and more are slated to join the VetCetera stable soon.

“We understand that animal health care is crucial and indispensable to the wellbeing of the ecosystem and people. Our objective is to come up with innovative solutions

to tide over challenges in the animal health care sector,” he said with a smile.

WoundCet is just the beginning. It was soon followed by another hit therapeutic product named TixCet, which is a boon to pet lovers in the country. Made of pulverized diatomaceous earth (the fossilized deposits of diatoms), this powder is perfectly safe for pets and has a pleasant lavender fragrance. “If pet owners massage this powder on their furry pals, the microscopic serrated structure of the earth particles rupture the waxy skin of ticks and mites and they die of fluid loss. The same happens to their eggs as well. Since it is eco-friendly, there is no question of any harm to pets and owners,” he explained.

Asked about the idea behind this product, Manoj narrated how he saw something similar in Muscat while visiting a British expatriate, who explained its efficacy and near-zero side effects. Upon returning to India, the innovator in Manoj made him search high and low for raw materials. Finally, his search ended in Rajasthan from where he procured materials to manufacture TixCet. Today it is a hit in the market with close to 50,000 bottles sold each month.

Manoj’s science background and his penchant for innovation have resulted in diagnostic kits for pets of the canine, feline and avian kind. They can detect a whole gamut of common ailments. On the anvil is a prefilled syringe to bring solace to dairy farmers who are worried about teat edema or swelling of the udder of cows. “Current procedures mandate that if a teat is badly affected, it has to be removed. This forces

28 June - July 2023 SPECIAL FEATURE

them to opt for pre-filled antibiotic syringes. But such injections on the teats run the risk of contaminating the milk with antibiotics,” explains the visionary entrepreneur.

He adds that VetCetera syringes tide over this problem as the medicine used is herbal. So, there is no need for a seven-day weaning period.

Asked about the efficacy and safety aspect of all VetCetera products, Manoj Kumar says there is no compromise on clinical trials even if they are meant for animals. Products are launched only after solid clinical trials, he said.

VetCetera, which has already transcended national frontiers in so short a time, is all set to expand further in the years to come, said Manoj Kumar with a smile of confidence

Alzheimer's disease results from a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that affect the brain over time.

Alzheimer's Disease - Tackling a Debilitating Problem

Alzheimer's disease (AD), accounts for 60% to 70% of cases of dementia. It was first described by, German psychiatrist and pathologist Alois Alzheimer in 1906. It is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and gets worse over time. The most common early symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events (short-term memory loss). As the disease advances, symptoms can include problems with language, disorientation (including easily getting lost), mood swings, loss of motivation, not managing self-care, and behavioral issues. As a person's condition declines, they often withdraw from family and society. Gradually, bodily functions are lost, ultimately leading to death. Although the speed of progression can vary, the average life expectancy following diagnosis is three to nine years.

In 2010, there were between 21 and 35 million people worldwide with AD. It most often begins in people over 65 years of age, although 4% to 5% of cases are early-onset Alzheimer's which begins before this. In India, the number of people with AD and other dementias is increasing every year because of the steady growth in the older population resulting in an estimated increase of twofold by 2030 and threefold by 2050 in developed countries,

Causes

The cause of Alzheimer's disease is poorly understood. Alzheimer's disease results from a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that affect the brain over time. About 70% of the risk is believed to be genetic with many genes usually involved. The genetic heritability of Alzheimer's disease based on reviews of twin and family stud-

ies, ranges from 49% to 79%. Most cases of Alzheimer's disease do not exhibit autosomal-dominant inheritance and are termed sporadic AD. Around 0.1% of the cases are familial forms of autosomal (not sex-linked) dominant inheritance, which have an onset before age 65. This form of the disease is known as early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease.

Other risk factors include a history of head injuries, depression, Down syndrome, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, or hypertension. The disease process is associated with plaques and tangles in the brain. Much research says that extracellular amyloid beta (Aß) deposits are the fundamental cause of the disease. Another hypothesis says AD is caused by reduced synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Herpes simplex virus type 1 has been proposed to play a causa-

tive role in people carrying the susceptible versions of the apoE gene. The cellular homeostasis of ionic copper, iron, and zinc is disrupted in AD, there is an increased risk of developing AD with environmental factors such as the intake of metals, particularly aluminum. Systemic markers of the innate immune system are risk factors for late-onset AD.

Another hypothesis asserts that the disease may be caused by agerelated myelin breakdown in the brain. Iron released during myelin breakdown is hypothesized to cause further damage. AD individuals show a 70% loss of locus coeruleus cells that provide norepinephrine (an endogenous anti-inflammatory agent in the microenvironment around the neurons, glial cells, and blood vessels in the neocortex and hippocampus). There is tentative evidence that exposure to air pollution may be a contributing factor to the development of Alzheimer's disease.

Neuropathology

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the loss of neurons and synapses in the cerebral cortex and certain subcortical regions. This loss results in gross atrophy of the affected regions, including degeneration in the temporal lobe and parietal

lobe, and parts of the frontal cortex and cingulate gyrus. Both amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles are clearly visible by microscopy in the brains of those afflicted by AD. Accumulation of aggregated amyloid fibrils, which are believed to be the toxic form of the protein responsible for disrupting the cell's calcium ion homeostasis, induces programmed cell death. Various inflammatory processes and cytokines may also have a role in the pathology of Alzheimer's disease

Diagnosis

Alzheimer's disease is usually diagnosed based on the person's medical history, history from relatives, and behavioral observations. The presence of characteristic neurological and neuropsychological features and the absence of alternative conditions is supportive. Advanced medical imaging with computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and with single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or positron emission tomography (PET) can be used to help exclude other cerebral pathology or subtypes of dementia. The diagnosis can be confirmed with very high accuracy post-mortem when brain material is available and can be examined histologically.

Early diagnosis

The emphasis in Alzheimer's research has been placed on diagnosing the condition before symptoms begin. One such test involves the analysis of cerebrospinal fluid for beta-amyloid or tau proteins, both total tau protein and phosphorylated tau protein concentrations Searching for these proteins using a spinal tap can predict the onset of Alzheimer's with a sensitivity of between 94% and 100%. When used in conjunction with existing neuroimaging techniques, doctors can identify people with significant memory loss who are already developing the disease.

Prevention

At present, there is no definitive evidence to support that any particular measure is effective in preventing AD. Epidemiological studies have proposed relationships between certain modifiable factors, such as diet, cardiovascular risk, pharmaceutical products, or intellectual activities (playing chess), socializing among others, and a population's likelihood of developing AD. Only further research, including clinical trials, will reveal whether these factors can help to prevent AD.

Medications

Although cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypercholesterolemia,

31 June - July 2023

hypertension, diabetes, and smoking, are associated with a higher risk of onset and course of AD, statins, which are cholesterol-lowering drugs, have not been effective in preventing or improving the course of the disease.

Long-term usage of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (reduce inflammation related to amyloid plaques) is associated with a reduced likelihood of developing AD. No prevention trial has been completed.

Lifestyle

People who engage in intellectual activities such as reading, playing board games, completing crossword puzzles, playing musical instruments, or having regular social interaction show a reduced risk for Alzheimer's disease. Physical activity is also associated with a reduced risk of AD.

Diet

People who eat a healthy diet have a lower risk of AD and a Mediterranean diet may improve outcomes in those with the disease. Those who eat a diet high in saturated fats and simple carbohydrates (mono- and disaccharide) have a higher risk.

There is limited evidence that light to moderate use of alcohol, particularly red wine, is associated with a lower risk of AD. There is tentative evidence that caffeine may be protective. A number of foods high in flavonoids such as cocoa, red wine, and tea may decrease the risk of AD. Reviews on the use of vitamins and minerals have not found enough consistent evidence to recommend them. This includes vitamins A C E, selenium, zinc, and folic acid with or without vitamin B12. In those already affected with AD adding docosahexaenoic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid, to the diet has not been found to slow decline. There is inconsistent and unconvincing evidence that ginkgo has any positive effect on cognitive impairment and dementia.

Management

There is no cure for Alzheimer's disease; available treatments offer relatively small symptomatic benefits but remain palliative in nature. Current treatments can be divided into pharmaceutical, psychosocial, and caregiving.

Medications

Five medications are currently used to treat the cognitive problems of AD: four are acetylcholinesterase

inhibitors (tacrine, rivastigmine, galantamine and donepezil) and the other (memantine) is an NMDA receptor antagonist The benefit from their use is small. No medication has been clearly shown to delay or halt the progression of the disease.

Only donepezil is approved for the treatment of advanced AD dementia. Memantine acts on the glutamatergic system by blocking NMDA receptors and inhibiting their overstimulation by glutamate. Memantine has been shown to have a small benefit in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Antipsychotic drugs are modestly useful in reducing aggression and psychosis in Alzheimer's disease with behavioral problems.

Psychosocial intervention

Psychosocial interventions are used as an adjunct to pharmaceutical treatment and can be classified within behavior, emotion, cognition, or stimulation-oriented approaches.

Behavioral interventions attempt to identify and reduce the antecedents and consequences of problem behaviors. This approach has not shown success in improving overall functioning but can help to reduce some specific problem behaviors,

32 June - July 2023 HEALTH

such as incontinence.

Emotion-oriented interventions include reminiscence therapy, validation therapy, supportive psychotherapy, sensory integration, also called Snoezelen, and simulated presence therapy. Reminiscence therapy (RT) involves the discussion of past experiences individually or in groups, many times with the aid of photographs, household items, music and sound recordings, or other familiar items from the past. it may be beneficial for cognition and mood. Simulated presence therapy (SPT) is based on attachment theories and involves playing a recording with the voices of the closest relatives of the person with Alzheimer's disease. There is partial evidence indicating that SPT may reduce challenging behaviors. Validation therapy is based on acceptance of the reality and personal truth of another's experience, while sensory integration is based on exercises aimed to stimulate the senses.

The aim of cognition-oriented treatments, which include reality orientation and cognitive retraining, is the reduction of cognitive deficits. Reality orientation consists of the presentation of information about time, place or person to ease the understanding of the person about

its surroundings and his or her place in them. Cognitive retraining tries to improve impaired capacities by exercitation of mental abilities.

Stimulation-oriented treatments include art, music and pet therapies, exercise, and any other kind of recreational activities. Stimulation has modest support for improving behavior, mood, and, to a lesser extent, function.

Caregiving

Since Alzheimer's has no cure and it gradually renders people incapable of tending to their own needs, caregiving essentially is the treatment and must be carefully managed over the course of the disease.

During the early and moderate stages, modifications to the living environment and lifestyle can increase patient safety and reduce the caretaker burden. If eating becomes problematic, food will need to be prepared in smaller pieces or even pureed. When swallowing difficulties arise, the use of feeding tubes may be required. The use of physical restraints is rarely indicated in any stage of the disease, although there are situations when they are necessary to prevent harm to the person with AD or their caregivers. As the disease progresses, different medical issues can appear, such as oral

and dental disease, pressure ulcers, malnutrition, hygiene problems, or respiratory, skin, or eye infections. Careful management can prevent them, while professional treatment is needed when they do arise. During the final stages of the disease, treatment is centred on relieving discomfort until death.

Prognosis

The early stages of Alzheimer's disease are difficult to diagnose. The life expectancy of the population with the disease is reduced. The mean life expectancy following diagnosis is approximately six years. Fewer than 3% of people live more than fourteen years. Disease features significantly associated with reduced survival are an increased severity of cognitive impairment, decreased functional level, history of falls, and disturbances in the neurological examination. Other coincident diseases such as heart problems, diabetes, or a history of alcohol abuse are also related to shortened survival. Men have a less favourable survival prognosis than women. The disease is the underlying cause of death in 68% of all cases Pneumonia and dehydration are the most frequent immediate causes of death brought by Alzheimer's disease

Prevention Of Money Laundering – Inclusion Of CAs, CS And CWA

The laws governing the prevention of money laundering finally came into existence globally pursuant to the political declaration adopted by the Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly held in June 1998. In the said session, member states were called on to adopt national money laundering legislation and program. It was noticed globally that money laundering posed not merely a serious threat to the financial systems of countries but also affected the integrity and sovereignty of those countries.

In order to obviate the threat of

money laundering, some of the steps taken by the international community included the following:

 Declaring that the laundering of monies carried out through serious crimes is a criminal offence;

 Working out the modalities of disclosure by financial institutions regarding reportable transactions;

 Declaring money laundering to be an extraditable offence;

 Confiscation of the proceeds of a crime; and

 Promoting international cooperation in the investigation of offences relating to money laundering

From an Indian perspective, the

Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (hereinafter referred to as "the Act" or "the PMLA Act") was introduced to prevent money laundering. The Act was introduced with the noble objective of preventing money laundering and providing for the confiscation of property derived from, or involved in, money laundering and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. Judicially, courts have recognised "economic offences" as a separate class unto themselves. In a landmark judgement, the Hon’ble Supreme Court in Mohanlal Jitmalji Porwal (1987) 2 SCC 364 compared

an "economic offence" with "murder" and thereafter held as follows:

"Ends of justice are not satisfied only when the accused in a criminal case is acquitted. The Community, acting through the State and the Public Prosecutor, is also entitled to justice. The cause of the community deserves equal treatment at the hands of the Court in the discharge of its judicial functions. The Community or the state is not a persona non-grata whose cause may be treated with disdain. The entire community is aggrieved if the economic offenders who ruin the economy of the state are not brought to book. A murder may be committed in the heat of the moment when passions are aroused. An economic offence is committed with cool calculation and deliberate design with an eye on personal profit regardless of the consequence to the

Community. A disregard for the interest of the Community can be manifested only at the cost of forfeiting the trust and faith of the Community in the system to administer justice in an evenhanded manner without fear of criticism from the quarters that view white-collar crimes with a permissive eye unmindful of the damage done to the National Economy and National Interest."

Like most laws, the PMLA Act too has been a subject matter of constant changes and challenges qua its constitutionality. In this article, I wish to delve into one such recent notification issued by the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, on May 3, 2023, which, in my view, has serious implications.

 Meaning of the term "money laundering"

The offence relating to "money

laundering" has been defined in Section 2(p) read with Section 3 of the Act. Broadly speaking, any person directly or indirectly involved in the "proceeds of crime" is said to have committed the offence of money laundering. The term "proceeds of crime" has been defined in a broad fashion in Section 2(u) of the Act. In essence, the term "proceeds of crime" essentially pertains to any property derived, obtained directly or indirectly, as a result of criminal activity by any person relating to a scheduled offence or "the value of such property".

 The recent notifications

The Department of Revenue, vide Notification No. SO 2036(E) dated May 3, 2023, has expanded the ambit of a "reporting entity" within the meaning of Section 2(wa) of the Act. The said definition now seeks to expand the coverage to

include a practising Chartered Accountant, Company Secretary, and Cost and Works Accountant within the meaning of Section 6 of the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949, Section 6 of the Company Secretaries Act, 1980, and Section 6 of the Cost and Works Accountants Act, 1959, respectively, undertaking the following transactions on behalf of their clients:

 Buying and selling of immoveable property;

 Managing client money, securities, or other assets;

 Management of bank, savings, and securities accounts;

 Organisation of contributions for the creation, operation, or management of companies;

 creation, operation, or management of companies, limited liability partnerships, or trusts, and buying and selling of business entities

Subsequently, the government issued another notification on May

9, 2023, notifying the following activities as designated activities (subject to certain exceptions) if carried on in the course of business on behalf of or for another person:

 Acting as a formation agent for companies and limited liability partnerships;

 Acting as (or arranging for another person to act as) a director or secretary of a company, a partner of a firm, or a similar position in relation to other companies and limited liability partnerships;

 Providing a registered office, business address, accommodation, correspondence, or administrative address for a company, a limited liability partnership, or a trust

 Acting as (or arranging for another person to act as) a trustee of an express trust or performing the equivalent function for another type of trust; and

 Acting as (or arranging for another person to act as) a nominee

shareholder for another person.

In view of the above, CAs and other similar professionals would now be required to comply with certain stringent procedural requirements, which are contained in Section 12 of the Act read with the PMLA (Maintenance of Records) Rules, 2005. The requirements as provided in Section 12 of the Act include the maintenance of records of all transactions in such a manner as to enable it to reconstruct individual transactions and furnish reports within certain prescribed timelines. Thus, CAs and other similar professionals will have to set up the necessary internal mechanisms to ensure strict compliance with the Act. Needless to say, such professionals would now be required to undertake detailed due diligence before accepting an engagement. This is indeed likely to cause hardship and difficulties for professionals, both in terms of cost, efficiency, and time

Men’s Health

Men's Health Month, observed in June annually is aimed at raising awareness about the unique health challenges faced by men and encouraging them to prioritise their well-being. Cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and hypertension, are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in men. Mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, disproportionately affect men, with suicide rates being alarmingly high. Conditions like prostate and testicular cancer

require attention, as early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes. Additionally, diabetes and obesity pose significant risks to men's health and well-being. Sadly, societal stigmas often prevent men from seeking the necessary healthcare and support they need. Culturally ingrained expectations of masculinity can discourage men from discussing their health concerns or seeking help, perpetuating a cycle of silence and neglect. Here are some of the most common health conditions that impact men

specifically and some lifestyle tips to manage them.

Cardiovascular diseases

Cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension (high blood pressure), high blood cholesterol and heart attacks are significant health concerns for men. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death globally, with men being particularly vulnerable.

Managing high blood pressure requires reducing sodium intake. It is important to remember that sodium is present not only in table

salt, but also in many packaged and processed foods. The recommended daily sodium intake is 2.3 grams, while just one teaspoon of table salt alone contains nearly 2.5 grams of sodium. Most individuals consume an excessive amount of sodium, ranging from 3 to 4 grams daily, primarily due to salt in the food and sodium from processed and packaged foods. It is advisable to limit sodium intake to below 2 grams per day if you are hypertensive. Consuming potassium-rich foods such as raisins, bananas, coconut water, and avocados can also help lower blood pressure as potassium aids in the excretion of sodium through urine. Additionally, reducing body fat,

quitting smoking, and moderating alcohol consumption all contribute to bringing blood pressure down to normal or near-normal levels.

Indian men are more prone to elevated blood cholesterol levels. It is important to note that high blood cholesterol can occur even without excessive consumption of red meat or cholesterol-rich foods. Processed carbohydrates, sugary beverages, sweets, and excessive calorie intake can all contribute to high cholesterol levels, which may lead to the formation of cholesterol plaques in the arteries, increasing the risk of heart attacks. After the age of 40, it is recommended to undergo routine cardiovascular evaluations every 3

to 5 years.

Regular exercise is beneficial to reduce the risk of heart attack, as our body builds collateral arteries, naturally bypassing the blocked ones. However, it is advisable to start gradually and pace the exercises, especially if one has been leading a sedentary lifestyle. Engaging in 30 minutes of exercise for 5 days a week is a great way to start. Highly intensive exercises, without adequate rest and recovery, may actually cause heart attacks - especially for those who have been leading a sedentary lifestyle.

Diabetes (type 2 diabetes)

Perhaps you are already aware that managing diabetes requires

39 June - July 2023

reducing carbohydrate intake, particularly sugar, engaging in regular physical activity, and ensuring adequate sleep. Increasing fibre intake and consuming protein-rich foods can also be beneficial for regulating blood glucose levels.

It is important to exercise caution when increasing protein intake in cases of uncontrolled blood glucose levels and diabetic kidney diseases over the long term, as it may potentially impair kidney function. In addition to dietary modifications, incorporating exercise into your routine, especially weight training, can greatly improve insulin sensitivity. Weight training exercises help improve muscle quality and increase the storage capacity for glucose in the form of glycogen within the skel-

etal muscles, thereby aiding in better blood glucose management. While medications, if prescribed by a doctor, play an important role in diabetes management, it is crucial to understand that lifestyle changes are the cornerstone of managing chronic conditions like diabetes. Relying solely on medications to control glucose levels without implementing lifestyle improvements can lead to a worsening of the condition and the development of associated complications in the future. The good news is that with structured and scientific lifestyle changes, you can perhaps reduce your reliance on medications—of course, based on your doctor’s advice only!

Regular monitoring of HbA1c (a measure of average blood sugar

levels over a three-month period), lipid profile, and kidney health is recommended for individuals with diabetes to ensure comprehensive management and early detection of any potential issues.

By adopting a holistic approach that combines appropriate dietary choices, regular physical activity, adequate rest, and consistent monitoring, individuals with diabetes can effectively manage their condition and reduce the risk of complications. However, it is always advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for personalised guidance and to develop a comprehensive diabetes management plan.

Prostrate and sexual health issues

The prostate gland, a small wal-

nut-shaped organ located just below the bladder, plays a crucial role in men's health. However, it is susceptible to various problems that can affect a man's well-being. One common issue is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate gland enlarges and puts pressure on the urethra, causing urinary symptoms like frequent urination, weak urine flow, and difficulty starting or stopping urination. While BPH is not cancerous, it can significantly impact a man's quality of life. Lifestyle modifications, such as reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, staying hydrated, and practising pelvic floor exercises, may help alleviate symptoms. In more severe cases, medication or surgical intervention as prescribed by a urologist might be necessary to manage BPH effectively.

Prostate cancer is another significant concern that affects men's health. It is the most common cancer in men, with early detection and treatment being crucial for successful outcomes. As men age, the risk of prostate cancer increases, highlighting the importance of routine screenings. A PSA blood test that measures the level of prostate-specific antigen, a protein produced by the prostate gland, is recommended to keep a tab on prostate health for indications of prostate cancer or other prostate conditions.

Erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, is a common sexual health issue that affects many men. It refers to the

inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. Causes of ED can range from physical factors such as underlying health conditions (e.g., diabetes, heart disease), hormonal imbalances, and certain medications to psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, or depression. It is important for men experiencing persistent or recurring erectile dysfunction to seek medical advice, as it may be a sign of an underlying health condition that needs to be addressed. Treatment options for ED may include lifestyle changes, counselling, medications, or other interventions based on the underlying cause. Pelvic floor exercises such as kegel can help alleviate ED to some extent, depending on the underlying cause.

Andropause: The Male Menopause

Andropause, also known as male menopause or late-onset hypogonadism, refers to a gradual decline in testosterone levels in ageing men. While not all men experience the same symptoms or degree of hormonal changes, andropause can have various effects on physical, sexual, and emotional well-being. Testosterone, the primary male sex hormone, naturally decreases with age. This decline in testosterone levels can lead to various symptoms, including fatigue, reduced muscle mass and strength, increased body fat, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, mood changes, and decreased bone density.

Unlike menopause in women, andropause does not involve a clearcut marker such as the cessation of menstruation. The diagnosis of andropause is often based on the presence of symptoms and a blood test to measure testosterone levels. Treatment options for andropause include lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, stress management, and adequate sleep. In very rare cases, if required, your doctor may recommend hormone therapy.

In a Nutshell

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial for overall well-being and managing almost all health conditions, whether it be diabetes, heart health, or even andropause. 30 minutes of daily exercise in a structured and scientific manner will have a far-reaching effect on improving your mental well-being as well as your physical health. It is recommended to include a mix of physical exercises involving yoga, cardio, and weight training that suits each individual’s physical condition. Also, do not rationalise walking as an exercise; it is just an activity (a great one, though). The benefits of physical exercise are far greater than those of an activity like walking.

Apart from exercises, a nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, stress reduction techniques (such as mindfulness or meditation), and maintaining a healthy weight can positively impact hormone balance and men's overall health

Putting human values, fairness, and accountability at the forefront of AI development will help to ensure technology's positive impact on society.

Digital at the Fore, Human at the Core

“Striking a Balance in the Digital Age”

“Harnessing the endless possibilities of technological advancements while upholding the value of the human element in our endeavours”

The phrase "digital at the fore, human at the core" captures the delicate balance between embracing digital advancements while keeping the human element at the centre of our endeavours in today's rapidly evolving technological landscape. It also condenses the need to harness the power of digital advancements while keeping the human element central to our ventures. As we move through the digital era, it is becoming increasingly important to harness the power of technology while still giving attention to human values, relationships, well-being, and the future of society. I have observed that the following factors facilitate the digital transformation journey through human interventions.

The Digital Revolution

“Our lives have seen some astonishing changes as a result of the digital revolution, particularly with the advent of the Internet and smartphones”

The digital revolution has brought about some remarkable transformations in various aspects of our lives, especially in the form of the Internet and Smartphones. From communication and commerce to healthcare and education, digital technologies have revolutionized the way we interact, work, and live. We now have instant access to information, seamless connectivity across borders, and unprecedented conveniences that were unimaginable just a few decades ago. As of 2023, there are approximately 5.18 billion internet users globally, it's around 65% of the world's total population. Today, India has around 800 million internet users, making it

the second-largest online market in the world. India is one of the world's largest markets for smartphones with more than 1.17 billion mobile phone users in 2023, representing 83 % of the population. Mobile devices are a primary driver of digital access worldwide. The number of unique mobile subscribers reached around 5.48 billion, with mobile penetration surpassing 68 % globally.

Harnessing the Power of Technology

“It is important to ensure that technology serves humanity's best interests”

While it is essential to recognize and harness the potential of digital tools and innovations, it is equally crucial to ensure that technology serves humanity's best interests. Rather than being overwhelmed by the digital wave, we must actively shape it to align with our values, needs, and aspirations. This means to consider the ethical implications of our digital actions, ensure the

privacy and security, and promote digital literacy to bridge the digital divide. Worldwide Human Connec-

Amidst the advancements in virtual communication, we must remember the importance of genuine human connections. While digital platforms facilitate the connectivity across vast distances, they should complement, rather than replace, face-to-face interactions. Maintaining a sense of empathy, emotional intelligence, and understanding is vital in fostering meaningful relationships and building a strong sense of community.

Social media platforms have become an integral part of people's daily lives, it plays a pivotal role in building human connections worldwide. As of 2023, there are around 4.89 billion social media users, representing around 60% of the global population. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube are widely used for communication, content sharing, and networking. As per some reports, an average global user spends 2 hours 24 minutes on social media per day. Interestingly, the world spends roughly 11.5 billion hours using social media platforms every day, which is the equivalent

to the 1.3 million years of human existence.

Preserving Privacy and Security

“Striking a balance between convenience and safeguarding personal data is crucial”

As we rely more on digital platforms, protecting privacy and ensuring cybersecurity has become paramount. Striking a balance between convenience and safeguarding personal data is crucial. By promoting transparency, implementing robust security measures, and respecting individuals' privacy rights, we can build trust and maintain the responsible use of technology. Organizations across the world are increasingly leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation technologies to streamline operations, improve efficiency, and enhance customer experiences. AI adoption is prevalent in sectors like healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and customer service. The adoption of digital payments is growing globally. Mobile wallets, contactless

payments, and online payment platforms have gained popularity due to their convenience and ease of use. Regions like Asia-Pacific and Europe have witnessed substantial growth in digital payment transactions. The digital payment sector in India has witnessed a significant growth in recent years. The number of digital payment transaction values reached 126 lakh crores in December 2022, fuelled by initiatives such as BHIM-UPI, IMPS, NACH, AePS, NETC, debit cards, credit cards, NEFT, RTGS, PPI, etc. with an average daily number of transactions of 36 crores.

Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs)

It is going to be a revolution in the digital forms of a country's fiat currency issued and regulated by the central bank. While the specific design and implementation of CBDCs can vary, they generally aim to provide a secure and efficient means of digital payment and potentially enhance the existing financial system. By leveraging the blockchain or distributed ledger technology, CBDCs can facilitate instant peerto-peer transfers, reduce transaction costs, and enhance financial inclusion, especially in regions with limited access to traditional banking services. With CBDCs, central banks can have real-time visibility into transactions, enabling more effective monitoring and implementation of monetary policy. Additionally, CBDCs may reduce the dependence on intermediaries and help mitigate risks associated with traditional banking systems. CBDCs can offer a low-cost, user-friendly solution for financial transactions, allowing individuals without bank accounts to participate in the digital economy.

It's important to note that the impact of CBDCs will depend on various factors, including the design choices made by central banks, the adoption rate among users, and the regulatory environment. As CBDCs are still in the experimental and early stages of implementation in several countries, their ultimate impact is yet to be fully realized. Hope India will soon be a cashless country replaced by Digital Currencies.

Empowering Human Potential

Digital technologies have the potential to empower individuals and communities, providing them access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. However, it is imperative to bridge the digital divide, ensuring equitable access to technology for all. By investing in digital literacy programs and addressing the

disparities in digital infrastructure, we can empower individuals from diverse backgrounds to thrive in the digital era. Ethical considerations have become increasingly significant with the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation. Developing and adhering to ethical frameworks that guide the design, deployment, and use of AI systems are crucial to prevent bias, discrimination, and ethical dilemmas. Putting human values, fairness, and accountability at the forefront of AI development will help to ensure technology's positive impact on society. The Indian government has launched various digitization initiatives, such as Digital India,

aimed at transforming the country into a digitally empowered society. These initiatives focus on expanding internet connectivity, promoting digital literacy, and delivering online services to the citizens.

Digital Wellness

In this fast-paced digital world, maintaining balance and well-being is essential. We must cultivate digital wellness by being mindful of our technology usage, setting healthy boundaries, and prioritizing self-care. Finding a balance between digital engagement and unplugging from the online world allows us to nurture our mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

Conclusion

As we embrace the digital revolution, keeping the human element at the core of our actions is vital. Striking a balance between technological advancements and human values allows us to shape a future where technology serves humanity's best interests. By fostering meaningful connections, preserving privacy, empowering individuals, and adhering to ethical considerations, we can utilize the digital tools to create a more inclusive, compassionate, and sustainable world. Let us navigate the digital age with an unwavering commitment to put humans at the center of our technological endeavours

Dancing In The Rain (Cautiously)

If you were a five-year old girl, you’d run into the rain with your little pink umbrella. If you were a damsel in love, you’d grab your boyfriend and dance in the rain. Whoever you may be, rain had a way of loosening up the knots wrapped around yourself. However, that may not be the case if you’re trapped in your office without a car. Regardless of whether you dislike or adore the monsoon season, it would arrive. And from a medical perspective, it would bring along with it a whole slew of problems you ought to be wary of before stepping into it.

Those with a beat up immune system would be down in bed with a cold and flu, simply because the weather decided to switch its mood a bit. Tissues filled with snot would surround you while you lie down with your limbs aching and forehead heating up. A few others would crash

in bed with a similar story but a different set of medication prescribed to ward off viruses. While some may lie down miserably in their beds, others may have to spend the week in the hospital surrounded by machines attempting to keep them alive. That would the case if you were down with malaria, typhoid or dengue. Vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, muscle or joint pain, fatigue, rapid breathing, cough, general feeling of discomfort, etc are some of the terrible things which could happen to you if you live carelessly during this time. Long story short, the friendly monsoon season could potentially bring you to your grave if you dared to underestimate it.

Right from childhood, our mothers and grandmothers have endlessly preached about how you should be eating your veggies and fruits. If you were one of those kids that did enjoy

your greens without requiring a parent standing by with a stick in their hand, you are lucky. However, most kids prefer dairymilks to drumsticks. But sooner or later, they’d grow up to realize that the green stuff kept you away from the hospital beds. As adults, they’d finally realize that hospital beds and sicknesses were a luxury. Realizing that eating your veggies as a balanced meal would do so much more than filling your stomach would be the first step you take toward remaining alive during the monsoon season. This would also imply that you opt to lessen the number of times you drive to the townsquare to grab the greasiest burgers. As a human being, you do deserve to eat the greasy burgers but establishing a healthy balance is what you must master.

Next up on the list of the monsoon survival kit is to drink a bunch

For those of you who do not know, malaria and dengue are caused by mosquitos. Most of us tend to underestimate mosquitos because all they do is give us a tiny prick when they bite us. However medically, mosquitos could also be the death of us. Since we do desire to live, it would be wiser to ensure there isn’t stagnant water around or inside our homes.

of fluids, preferably boiled water. Do remember to boil the water beforehand to kill any bacteria attempting to enter your system. It improves your digestive system and helps you aid your weightloss plan as well. Adding to it is the necessity to maintain good hygiene, especially during this time. Shower in warm water to wash away the monsoon dirt. It helps you relax your sore muscles and reduces your chances of having to purchase a bunch of ointments to keep your skin from misbehaving. Alongside all of this, do not forget basics like washing your hands be-

fore dinner.

That’s where these creatures meet and breed. Their multiplication would mean our subtraction. Yet again, keep your surroundings and homes clean.

Along with that, use mosquito repellants as well. Most of these diseases can be kept at bay with vaccinations available. So do take your vaccinations in time. The last step would be to avoid from crowds. With that, our survival guide to a monsoon season have come to an end. While these steps may not be the easiest to follow, the main message to be understood is to be cautious. While you enjoy the rain with your loved ones or curse the bad weather for interrupting your schedule, keep in mind that you ought to take care of yourself

He is currently the Editor of Quarter Mile magazine and a columnist in several leading magazines and newspapers. He is also a highly sought after consulting engineer and market analyst for many automobile manufacturers.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny

The new fourth-generation Jimny is a smash hit in global markets and we have been crying to get one here ever since its launch. Maruti thought it would have limited appeal as a three-door (the Mahindra Thar says Hello) and decided to do its own extended wheelbase version with five doors instead and finally, it's here. India is the first market to get the 5-door and it will be exported to many others from now on. Last

month, we drove one in Dehradun and came back impressed.

While it doesn’t have the presence of a Mahindra Thar or the imposing size of a Gurkha, the Jimny is bristling with character. It's not as cute as the three-door we wanted, but Maruti engineers have done a great job in making the Jimny 5-door look the part. The front end has the five-slot grille which is now a Jimny trademark and the Indian version gets chrome inserts inside each one.

AUTO REVIEW
58 June - July 2023

The front end has the five-slot grille which is now a Jimny trademark and the Indian version gets chrome inserts inside each one.

The flat bonnet and upright windscreen go well with the rest of the boxy shape. The alloy wheels are 15 inches and the lower trim gets steel rims. The Jimny has seen a 340mm increase in wheelbase and overall length now stands at 3985mm including the spare wheel at the rear. You’ll be surprised to know that the Jimny is narrower than a Celerio, at 1645mm!

Climb into the cabin and the Jimny feels just as exciting as the outside. The cabin has several design elements like a passenger side grab handle, exposed faux bolts, meaty knobs, etc. The instrument console has two round dials housed in square pods like in a Gypsy. The steering wheel is similar to the one

in the Grand Vitara, but doesn't get reach adjustment. Plastic quality isn't great, but that's alright. The driver seat is narrow and can't be adjusted for height either, but you will still be comfortable here. The rear seats are best for two and while legroom is adequate, under-thigh support isn't. They have skipped load sensors for the back seat, so you have to keep the seatbelts buckled in, even if there aren't any rear passengers or it will keep beeping. The boot is 219 litres with the rear seats in place, but a 50:50 split gives you some flexibility. The top-end trim gets LED headlamps with headlamp washers, keyless entry, push-button start, a 9-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple

CarPlay, cruise control, climate control, tinted windows, rear wiper and washer, electric foldable outside mirrors and reversing camera. Safety kit includes ESP, ABS with EBD, hillhold assist, hill-descent control, six airbags, brake limited slip differential and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

Under the Jimny’s hood is a 1.5 litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 103bhp and 134Nm torque. It's not the new dual injector K15C unit as the new Brezza, but the older K15B – a motor that has torque characteristics better suited for the Jimny’s off-road requirements. It is tractable and pulls well from low revs. Although it's sufficient for urban use, the engine isn't particularly strong in the mid-

The three-link suspension has good wheel travel and the car with its stiff chassis and high-profile tyres, feels robust enough to take on most beaten paths. The capable fourwheel drive system and decent wheel articulation means it is very capable off-road.

60 June - July 2023 AUTO REVIEW

range. When you want to accelerate hard on the highway, it leaves you wanting. It lacks the punch of modern turbocharged petrol engines but its simplicity and robustness are what most people will want. The transmission choices are either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic and both deliver power to a proper transfercase that sits in the middle of the chassis. You can manually shift from 2WD to 4WD and 4H in this 'All Grip Pro' four-wheel drive system. The manual gearbox is a bit notchy and the clutch isn't very light, making the automatic the obvious choice for city dwellers.

The Jimny rides better than most body-on-frame SUVs, thanks to the amount of re-engineering it has received for India. There is a bit of harshness at low speeds and that's to be expected from a rigid axle setup. The on-road han-

dling is predictable and body roll isn't too bad, but you'd not want to drive this one fast. It reaches the limits of grip fairly easily and the slow steering rack doesn't give you much confidence. Where the Jimny excels is when you take it offroad. It gets a 36-degree approach angle, 47-degree departure angle and 24-degree ramp breakover angle along with 210mm ground clearance. It gets electronics like hill-start assist, hill-descent control, ESP and electronic braking differentials. The three-link suspension has good wheel travel and the car with its stiff chassis and high-profile tyres, feels robust enough to take on most beaten paths. The capable four-wheel drive system and decent wheel articulation means it is very capable off-road. Couple that to the lightweight chassis that only weighs 1200 kilos and the narrow width

and small turning circle, and the Jimny can go places where most established, big off-roaders cannot.

At the time of writing this review, the prices aren’t out but we expect it to be in the Rs.12-15 lakh bracket. It may not do well against other compact SUVs in terms of comfort, ease of driving or rear seat comfort, but buying it for all of that is completely missing the point. The Jimny is for those who want an exuberantlooking, compact, fun, lifestyle SUV that can be taken anywhere - from dropping the kids off to school every day and going for an off-road adventure during the weekends, to taking on an overland trip across the country. And once you have experienced it offroad as we did, you'll not have to think twice if you are in the market for something like this
