TERESA FERNANDEZ Teresa Fernandez is a first-generation UNCP college student majoring in exercise sports science with a focus on health promotion. She is also student body vice president, the Student Government Association Executive Board Member of the Year and a REACH Research Fellow.

Teresa's mother and grandmother emigrated to the United States from Paraguay and have inspired her research into the effects of federal anti-immigrant bills on first- and second-generation Latinos in the United States and how acculturation can influence their health.

PEACE AJIROTUTU Peace Ajirotutu's lifelong passion for politics was fueled by an internship with the North Carolina General Assembly while a Maynor Honor's College student at UNCP. Peace graduated last May and has since narrowed her focus to international affairs at the Institute of World Politics (IWP), thanks partly to the prestigious school’s partnership with UNCP. Peace presented her research entitled “The Denuclearization and Democratization of North Korea via the Exploitation of Juche Ideology” at the Intelligence Studies Consortium Conference held at IWP in Washington, D.C.

With the honors college, the dean and assistant dean enabled me to develop professional skills by helping me organize the first-ever TEDx conference at UNCP.”

This scholarship combines the federal Pell Grant with the state-funded financial aid program to form a simplified and predictable scholarship award that’s easier to understand and makes education more affordable for most North Carolinians. The best part? It’s money that doesn’t have to be repaid.

Award determinations for merit scholarships are based on the student’s prior academic qualifications.

Friends, faculty, alumni, corporations and foundations have provided funds to aid students in the pursuit of academic achievement. A wide range of endowed scholarships and other awards are available, some with specific restrictions.

DISCOVER A PROUD CULTURE AND COMMUNITY. Our campus is nestled in the heart of Pembroke, a community beaming with southern charm and university pride. Pembroke is the political and cultural center of North Carolina’s largest American Indian tribe—the Lumbee—and is located in Robeson County, one of the most diverse counties in the nation.

In less than two hours, you can be in the mountains, at the beach or dining in the state capital. But you’ll also find a lot to do right here at home. From Broadway shows at the Givens Performing Arts Center to local wineries and fisheries, as well as several state parks, the community has a lot to offer.

TO QUALIFY FOR ADMISSION TO UNCP:

• All students under the age of 21 with less than 24 credit hours at the time of enrollment are required to meet the UNC System minimum admission requirements for freshmen.

• Students must meet a minimum 2.0 cumulative college GPA for all college courses as calculated by the Undergraduate Admissions Office.

• Students must be in good standing and eligible to return to the last school attended.

A. Four courses of English.

B. Mathematics: four course units in any of these combinations: • Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and one unit beyond Algebra II; or • Algebra I, Algebra II and two units beyond Algebra II; or • Common Core Math I, II and III, and one unit beyond Common Core Math III; or • Integrated Math I, II, III and one unit beyond Integrated Math III; or • NC Math I, II, III and one unit beyond NC Math III identified as meeting the 4th level mathematics requirement for admission to UNC System institutions.

C. Science: three course units, including at least: • One Life Science unit (e.g., Biology, Ecology, Zoology); and • One Non-Life Science unit (e.g., Astronomy, Chemistry, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physical Science, Physics); and • One Laboratory Science unit.

D. Social Studies:

• Send in your $55 application fee.

• Send in your official high school transcripts.

• Send in official transcripts from ALL previously attended colleges and/or universities.

Although not required for admission, these supplemental items can significantly strengthen your application.

• Two course units, including one unit in U.S. History.

At UNCP, we evaluate every application individually to determine your readiness for academic success. Admission decisions are made on the basis of completion of high school requirements, overall weighted grade point average and class rank.

If a student does not meet the minimum high school GPA requirement, they may gain admission eligibility with a composite ACT score of 19 or combined SAT (mathematics and evidence-based reading and writing) of 1010.

For students entering in the Fall 2025 or Spring 2026 semesters: 1. High School GPA: A minimum weighted GPA of 2.5.

2. Standardized Test Scores: Students with a weighted high school GPA greater than or equal to 2.5 and less than 2.8 are required to submit a standardized test score (ACT or SAT).
