ANNUAL REPORT

THE CHAMBERLAIN STUDENT CENTER AND CAMPUS ACTIVITIES

The Chamberlain Student Center & Campus Activities (SCCA) team is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all members of the Rowan University community. Through quality programs, services, and facilities, the SCCA creates opportunities for student engagement and learning, stimulates personal development, and contributes to building campus community in collaboration with university partners.

The purpose of the Student University Programmers (SUP) shall be to provide the students of Rowan University with an array of diverse, educational, and entertaining programs, to encourage the development of leadership skills and cooperation among all students, and to promote the interests, image, and quality of experience at Rowan University.

Rowan After Hours (RAH) provides late-night/weekend opportunities for Rowan University students to become active in campus life by executing diverse, quality programs, in a safe and welcoming environment.

FUN

We’re more than just a building. The events, services, and facilities we provide create an engaging and entertaining atmosphere that fosters well-being and social connectedness for the Rowan community. Simply put, we take our jobs seriously, but not ourselves.

SCCA HIGHLIGHTS

- For the 2023-2024 academic year, SCCA had 58 rentals through the Equipment Rental Program, which includes departments & student groups.

- In addition to processing over 450 work orders, the in-house maintenance team was responsible for setting up and breaking down 4,353 events

- The switchboard handled over 10,900 calls this academic year.

- This year’s Hollybash Artist Reveal Video saw over 27,000 views on Instagram, making it our highest viewed reel ever!

- Through purposeful marketing campaigns and increased student takeovers, our departmental Instagram grew by another 500+ followers, and we finally broke 4,500 total followers!

- Hosted our Annual Bag Stuffing Day and stuffed over 2,000 bags for incoming first-year residential students, highlighting information and giveaways from various offices around campus.

- The RAH Philly Shuttle service, weekly shuttle between Rowan University & Philadelphia, transported over 100 students for this free service!

- The Audio-Visual equipment in the event spaces offered the ability to host hybrid events by providing our guests with a virtual tech option in most of our meeting spaces, producing over 100 live stream events.

- SUP and RAH hosted the annual Fall Comedy Show, selling out over 988 tickets during Family Weekend, with comedian Jimmy O. Yang with special guests Zainab Johnson & Forrest Shaw.

- Hollybash, SUP and RAH’s spring festival and concert, welcomed 3,302 students, faculty, and staff with headlining artist Tori Kelly.

WHY ARE WE THE HEART OF CAMPUS?

The Chamberlain Student Center & Campus Activities is more than just a building, it’s the heart of campus! This marketing campaign began in fall 2023 as a way to demonstrate the integral role the Chamberlain Student Center plays at Rowan University.

EXPANDING FOR THE FUTURE

Student Center Expansion

In anticipation of the exciting expansion, departmental leadership actively participated in design and construction planning meetings throughout the year. This collaborative effort reflects our enthusiasm for creating a dynamic new space that will enhance the Student Center’s role as a hub for connection and innovation.

SCCA 50th Anniversary

As we entered the 50th anniversary year of the Student Center, were thrilled to celebrate five decades of fostering community, creativity, and connection. Were excited to host a series of events throughout the 2024 calendar year that will honor its legacy and vibrant role in our community. From engaging programs to commemorative gatherings, these celebrations reflect on the past and celebrate the present and future together!

ACADEMIC & UNIVERSITY SUPPORT

Marketing

Number of requests to support event promotion, enhance building initiatives, and improve signage.

PHOTO AND VIDEO

Student photographers and videographers captured over 105 events, executed 58 social media student takeovers, and published 6 videos on the SCCA YouTube channel.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

More than 50,000 flyers and handbills were designed and printed, alongside over 7,000 semester events calendars.

- Through a partnership with Academic Support Programs, the SCCA received and responded to over 108 student involvement referrals through RSN/Starfish. This referral is selected when an advisor believes a student is having difficulty becoming involved in campus life.

- Our professional and support staff volunteered for at least one commencement shift. The team volunteered for a total of 31 commencement shifts & covered all commencement ceremonies and celebrations!

- The SCCA co-sponsored Graduate Student Appreciation Week alongside the Graduate Student Government Association (GSGA).

- The SCCA co-sponsored the Centennial Solar Eclipse Viewing Party in conjunction with the Edelman Planetarium and College of Science and Mathematics.

- Rowan’s Protest Response Team/Student Engagement Advisory Team were one of three finalists for the Clery Center Campus Safety Impact Award. The award highlights a program or initiative at an institution of higher education that demonstrates innovation, collaboration, and equity in enhancing safety on campus.

- Our Marketing team continued to support university-wide marketing campaigns such as Homecoming, Welcome Week, and Commencement, as well as outreach to incoming and prospective students through collaborative events and recruitment initiatives such as Accepted Students Day.

- Saturday Night Lights, co-sponsored with Rowan Athletics, supported our first home football game with interactive games, a Kids’ Zone, free food, and a half-time show for almost 1,000 students, staff/faculty, community members, and families.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

Highlights

- The SCCA partnered with a local charitable organization, Camden Christmas, where professional and graduate staff fundraised and purchased 150 gifts which went to 50 children.

- SCCA participated in Rowan University’s Volunteerism & Community Engagement’s annual Thanksgiving Food Drive where our students and staff helped fund Thanksgiving for several Gloucester County Families.

The 14th Annual St. Baldrick’s Day welcomed over 20 shavees and raised over $12,400 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

Attendance & Event Numbers

- Rowan After Hours (RAH) hosted 69 events with over 37 total co-sponsorships with student organizations and departments. RAH saw 16,052 participants throughout the year!

- Student University Programmers (SUP) hosted - 75 events with 11 co-sponsorships with student organizations and departments. SUP saw 10,200 participants throughout the year.

- SCCA hosted 37 events with 2,818 attendees.

- The SUP Off-Campus Trips Committee hosted 16 trips, of which 12 were sold out!

- SUP hosted their annual Lil’ Sibs Weekend, a three-day programming series designed for Rowan students to invite their Lil’ Sibs (nieces/nephews/cousins/etc.) ages 5-18 on to campus for various events. This year’s weekend welcomed 102 registered siblings to 78 Rowan students.

CELEBRATING A CENTURY

SPIRIT

The spirit competition is an ongoing competition that takes place at various events throughout the week where Homecoming teams can earn points for displaying Rowan pride, good sportsmanship, and excitement for the Homecoming theme.

PUSH CART

Get ready to burn some rubber! Teams of four will race around Bunce Circle. The team with the fastest averaged time will be crowned winner.

BATTLESHIP

You sunk my battleship! Teams of four will compete and battle other teams’ ships to be the last one floating.

LIP SYNC

Grab your friends, find your favorite tune, dress up, and compete against other students for a chance to win $1,000 in prizes.

BANNER

The Homecoming Banner Competition is a great way to show off your Prof pride! Banners will be hung in the Chamberlain Student Center around the Pit all week to help promote Homecoming, student organizations, and campus pride

CANSTRUCTION

CAN you build your way to a Homecoming win? Showcase your talents at this competition by building a structure from canned goods. All proceeds from this event will benefit The Shop, Rowan’s on campus Pantry & Resource Center.

Highlights

- This week featured a 7-day event series that included various in-person student events that encouraged and fostered a sense of Rowan pride and community.

- Throughout the week, the committee saw 30 teams participate through various campus events and competitions, such as our annual Spirit, Banner, Push Cart, CANstruction, Battleship, & Lip Sync Competitions.

- We hosted our 3rd annual Office Decorating Contest for faculty and staff to embrace the Homecoming spirit across campus and saw 8 departments participate!

- Thanks to the help of over 60 faculty/staff and graduate student volunteers we were able to execute a fantastic week for the Rowan Community!

CAREER ADVANCEMENT

Student Employment & Recognition

- NEW INITIATIVE: Implemented “Chamberlain Chips” to acknowledge student staff members. Professional and graduate staff handed out over 250 Chamberlain Chips throughout the year for acts of kindness, going above - and beyond in their job, and exemplifying the department’s core values.

- The SCCA employed 97 students returning approximately $439,545.73 back to students through student wages as an investment in student employment & development.

- The SCCA employed approximately 32 FWS employees who were awarded $80,264.53 in financial aid packages

- The SCCA hosted our Winter and End of the Year Banquets which celebrated our student staff and departmental accomplishments for the 2023-2024 academic year. Our team gave out a total of 19 awards along with recognizing over 50 student employees for their time and dedication to the department.

Professional Development

- 10 of our professional and graduate staff attended regional, national, and international conferences to present, serve in leadership roles, and participate in continuing education on how to best serve our students, adapt to current events, and provide innovative programs, facilities, and services.

- 4 presentations presented by professional, graduate, and undergraduate student staff at local, regional, and international conferences.

- SCCA professional staff members held more than 5 leadership positions across 4 regional & international associations, with 3 graduate staff members held a leadership position regionally.

- Four of our professional and graduate staff will be participating in Safe Zone Train-the-Trainer - Virtual Course, including professional staff and our graduate coordinators.

- Four professional staff teach various introduction courses at Rowan University.

It is a great way to make connections on campus as well. Starting as a freshman I didn’t really know many people at college, but working in the SCCA broke me out of my shell, and I’ve met and worked with so many amazing people.

As a student balancing school life and work is difficult but with the SCCA it’s less challenging because they are so understanding. My role as an EA will help me in my future career path because it started to set me up for the professionalism that’s expected of me. Students should work in the SCCA because they set you up for success.

I’ve never had a job as fun and rewarding as the SCCA! Working as a BOA is rewarding, helped me come out of my shell and be more outgoing, and become more professional. I also have an opportunity to host Trivia, & it’s a blast!I love being able to engage with other students in such a fun way, both my coworkers and people visiting the SCCA.
