Ukiah High Looking into English Honors for Freshman Lizzy Mckeon Staff Writer

Honors English placement tests are coming up, to place in an advanced English course as a sophomore at Ukiah High with Mrs. Eddy. To get into one of the two classes offered here, students must first pass a placement test this March, which is compiled by the entire English department and is comprised of one take home essay (like a personal statement), one in-class essay (timed writing), and possibly a multiple choice. Additional criteria includes a quality sample essay from the past year’s English class, grade transcript with a 3.0 or better including a B or above in English I, and their English teacher’s input. If these first prerequisites are not met and students and parents still pursue acceptance, then students must complete the following: a special form signed by their parents and a 3-5 day spring vacation school to catch up academically for honors entry the next fall.

There are a wide range of voiced opinions on the topic from just about everybody, and administration is doing its best to deliver a system which incorporates all these views. Many have speculated on whether or not there should be a Freshman Honors English course, and so far there has not been. Mr. Spain said, “Freshman Honors is an issue that is contentious and by no means settled”. Mrs. Eddy and Mr. Spain are a few of the opposition. “A heterogeneous environment (in any classroom) is most effective; it provides a diverse population that contributes. When honors caliber students are not in the college prep classroom, the atmosphere and the dynamic changes,” Eddy said. Mr. Spain elaborates on this: “When you skim off the cream of the crop, you benefit those top kids, because you are training them more rigorously; but it affects the other ninety percent negatively because they do not see how it is done- they have fewer positive peer models for

Eddy said, “That the more academically inclined students need to be able to impart their knowledge and expertise of how to work to others. Especially in that particular level as freshman, because it is the last time they get to run with the pack before they enter the AP classes”. Rachel Prosser, the former Eighth Grade Honors teacher at Pomolita, has a different take on the matter. “I am in favor of an honors class for freshmen. I have seen too many of my brilliant former students become complacent and lazy. Ukiah High Misses Out in Mock Trial Competition

Becca Peterson Guest Writer

On Saturday, January 25, for the third year in a row the Ukiah High Mock Trial team went to the Mendocino County Mock Trial Competition held at the Courthouse. The team, captained by seniors Becca Petersen and Harris Bedford, consisted of seventeen students of varied ages and was coached by teacher Logan Silva. The team received the case booklet and information for the 2014 competition in October and worked on assigned roles and prepared to argue both sides of a drug-related homicide in front of a real judge. In order to prepare for the competition in January, the students had to study aspects of law, acting, and debate, as they were to be judged on their performance as either attorney or wit-

ness as well as on their knowledge of the facts. After school Mock Trial practices found students studying the United States Constitution and the established case precedents, memorizing long speeches, and being drilled on facts pertinent to the case. Apart from the seven students who would be acting as attorneys and the eight witnesses, there were also students in the roles of Courtroom Clerk, Bailiff, and Courtroom Artist. On Saturday morning, Ukiah High’s defense team went up against Laytonville High’s prosecution, the team that has won the county title for the past several years. Ukiah High attorneys held their ground, however, and with fantastic performances from all four witnesses the team made it through only three points behind Laytonville. Melissa Ortega (12) and Maggie Flaherty (9) both received awards as Outstanding Defense Witnesses.

After a short lunch break, Ukiah returned to the courthouse to match up with a team from Pleasant Valley, this time presenting the prosecution. The team had more of a struggle this round; even still, Ukiah witnesses stuck to the facts and faithfully represented their characters. With an awardwinning closing argument delivered by Taylor Stophlet (12), Ukiah High succeeded in winning enough points to continue to semi-finals the following weekend. Abe Rawles (12), Ty Hernandez (9), Zoe Lazaro (12), and Jazlyn Kraft (12) all received awards as Outstanding Prosecution Witnesses. The morning of February 1st found Ukiah High’s team at Schat’s Bakery at 8:30, preparing and finalizing arguments for the day’s competition, this time against Ukiah’s Charter Academy. With a full week to improve

and refine, Ukiah’s defense team gave their best performance, with a devastating pretrial argument delivered by Tyler Biscocho (12), Jazlyn Kraft (12) as an Outstanding Bailiff, Becca Petersen (12) receiving Outstanding Defense Attorney, and Ukiah High witnesses again outperforming those of the opposing team. Unable to recover from the damage that the previous week’s match against Pleasant Valley had dealt, Ukiah High did not make it into the finals; however, they put an incredible amount of work and preparation into every role and, hopefully, can take the lessons they learned into next year’s competition. Fort Bragg High School and Charter Academy competed in the finals that afternoon, with Fort Bragg ultimately taking the championship and progressing on to the state level.

Ukiah High Speaks Out on Drought and Aquaponics Luke Robinson Staff Writer

The drought in Mendocino County is starting to become a real problem; there is limited water for agriculture, Lake Mendocino is dry and the fish are struggling to survive. As this reality sets in, alternative agricultural practices, such as aquaponics, become important to consider. Brenna Raugewitz teaches biology and AP Environmental Science here at Ukiah High. In her opinion, “If [the drought] continues, agriculture in California could become nonexistent, because we are a desert, a semiarid region, and in reality we have kind of created this nice agriculture area because of the abundance of water we have access to,” said Raugewitz. Because of the drought, new measures need to be taken to conserve water, both for per-

sonal and industrial use. About eighty percent of the developed water supply is used for agriculture. Aquaponics and aquaculture promise to conserve water while creating a small contained ecosystem that is environmentally friendly and produces food. Ukiah High has a demonstration aquaponics system that is not quite operational, but when completed will demonstrate the importance of other methods of sustainable farming. Eric Crawford teaches the agriculture class at Ukiah High and recently received the school master’s Teacher of the Year award for Mendocino County. About four years ago Max Meyers, who started Nor Cal Aquaponics, began the endeavor with Crawford to build the aquaponics system Aquaponics works as a closed system that recycles resources to produce food. To start, there is a trough of water that is constantly run through a

pump to keep it fresh and moving. Fish, typically tilapia, swim in the trough; the excrement fertilizes the plants growing above in the water. After starting the aquaponics in motion, it is self sufficient, only needing occasional water to counteract evaporation. Compared to traditional agriculture, aquaculture uses only twenty percent of the normally required water. “When running, the aquaponics system can provide fresh veggies for the cafeteria and employ students to do routine maintenance,” said Crawford. Joezette Morales is a senior at Ukiah High, and her choice of senior project is not a coincidence with the drought. “For my senior project I’m going to create an aquaponics system with goldfish and lettuce or basil,” said Morales. Morales’ inspiration to create an aquaponics system came from many places. During a pre-

sentation in AP Environmental Science (APES) class taught by Raugewitz, Jed Davis from Potter Valley explained aquaponics and how it works. Morales also works at Real Goods, which has given her more knowledge about aquaponics. With the help of Mrs. Raugewitz, Morales plans to make her small aquaponics system out of a fish tank and a PVC pipe frame. After the project is finished Morales will present it in APES to her fellow students. “I hope that future generations take on aquaponics or sustainable growing so that if the water problem continues this will be an efficient way to grow,” said Morales. Despite the current rain that has relieved the stress of a terrible drought, currently Ukiah has only received eight inches, where the average for a normal year should be around 24 inches.

was reintroduced this year by the class of 2014. The report heartily announced that the trip signups were a success with over 100 people planning to attend the trip to Disneyland. It was also reported that fundraising for the trip would be taking place shortly to ensure that everyone that wanted to go, would have the opportunity. The student council also remarked on a recent event in which Ukiah High played host to the leadership team from Fort Bragg High School. While officers did admit some disappointment in the turn out of that event, the council as a whole moved to suggest ways for improvement for the upcoming years. As a final note, ASB President,

Mariah Larwood, announced that there would be efforts to bring back the Mr Wildcat pageant and that only a few hurdles still remained before an official announcement of the event could be made. The current tentative date for the event is set for April 17 and student council hopes to get official approval by next month’s meeting. Also on Tuesday, February 25, the Ukiah Unified School District Board convened to pass the budget proposals for the upcoming fiscal year. This meeting occurred in lieu of a meeting two weeks prior. Items, including the School Resource Officer position at Ukiah High, were discussed and voted on by the board.

On Tuesday, February 11, Ukiah High’s Student Council convened in room B-3 to discuss a wide variety of topics ranging from this month’s staff member of the month to prom and the talent show. During the lunchtime meeting, ASB officers and commissioners reported to council on their prospective offices. The Community Service commissioners reported first on the recent blood drive which took place on Thursday, February 6. “We had less people donate than last time and than we would have liked to see, but that was not entirely our fault because [Blood Centers of the Pacific] arrived late,” reported Service Commissioner, Melissa Ortega. She also reported that new ways to entice possible donors will be rolled out for the next blood drive. Among other items discussed at the meeting, the sophomore class announced its plans to move forward with the talent show. In the few days following the meeting, it was announced that the show will take place on March 27 and try outs will take place soon. Similarly, the junior class reported that prom preparations are beginning and that committees within the junior class will be formed in the coming weeks to prepare for the event. Concerning prom, last minute venues were being suggested at the student council meeting and a promising lead presented itself in the form of the Alex Rohrbaugh. Nothing had been confirmed when the meeting adjourned. Senior class president, Zoe Lazaro also gave a report on the Senior Trip, an idea that

RoboCop Nick Vargas

Staff Writer

The movie Robocop directed by Jose Padilha is a remake of the 1987 Robocop film directed by Paul Verhoeven. It is a futuristic action movie about a Detroit cop who gets injured in the line of duty and sets out to get revenge with his new robotic body. The original Robocop is about a new Detroit police officer who gets caught in an explosion while in the line of duty on his first job. In the remake, the officer has been with the police for a while now and only gets in trouble when he engages with the wrong person. Also, the way the bad guys hurt him is two major ways, and one is more believable than the other. Padilha also change Robocop’s appearance and how he acts. In the first Robocop, the officer is “shoot first and ask questions later” and in the new one, he is more kind. The 1987 Robocop film did a great job with special effects for its time but compared to the

modern day Robocop film, the special effects are just okay. The casting for both movies was spot on; both Peter Weller and Joel Kinnamen play Robocop and make him look very real. The make-up in the 2014 Robocop is superior to the original because today’s cosmetic techniques make things seem more realistic. Both Robocop films have really similar story lines but each director takes different angles on how they make policeman Alex Murphy into Robocop. The films also had Robocop wanting revenge on the people that killed him, but, in the first film, more time was spent on looking for the killers. In the new Robocop Alex Murphy spends more time overcoming the program he has in his life. The newer Robocop seems more advanced than the previous one because he better performs physical actions than in the previous movie. With re-

cent technological advances this version seems more believable. Throughout most of the 2014 Robocop movie you get more of a detective out of Alex Murphy, while in the first one you get more of a cop. The newer film is much better because one can get to see how advanced Murphy’s detective side is but they did keep his cop side. There is some killing that occurs but it is not too realistic unlike the first movie. The director also used varied amounts of camera angles to help see more of the action from multiple points of view. This movie is directed towards young adults to adults and people who like futuristic action or sci-fi movies that are not too graphic. The movie is worth paying for a ticket to watch and comparing to the original.

Bad Okay Good Great Annual Spring Choir Concert Set for March 22 Taylor Cameron Humor Page Editor The Ukiah High School Music Department is putting on their annual fundraising concert March 22, 2014 at 7:30 PM in the cafetorium at Ukiah High. This year’s theme is “Time Machine,” where members of the music department are able to choose songs from several different

eras. “We wanted to do an evolution of music, but still incorporate a story line that would go along with it, so ‘Time Machine’ was the ultimate choice,” said Choir Department president Gracie Denbo. Songs from the 40’s up to the 2000’s are up for grabs, which is different than several of the other concerts, which typically have focused

on one specific era and the music from it. Some of the songs that will be performed that many people will recognize are “Walk Like a Man” by the Four Seasons, “The Bellas Final” from the movie Pitch Perfect, and a medley including “ABC” by the Jackson Five. Tickets will be available at the door, The Mendocino Book Company, or from a

participating student. Adult tickets are $10.00, students and youth over five years of age tickets are $5.00, and the admission for children under five years old is free. “Music is a key part of our culture in Mendocino County and if we can show Ukiah that our music program is living and thriving, then we’ve accomplished what we’ve set out to do,” said Gracie Denbo.

The Spotlight is on The Fat Oples

Melissa Duenas

Staff Writer

The Fat Oples would describe themselves as “average dudes who play music.” They are a group of four teens who get together to create their own music. Ukiah High School’s Miles Mancinelli (11) and Redwood Academy’s Clayton King (11) are the main members. Creating music is something that they love doing. Originally, the band was called “People”, but the name was “too much of a common noun,” as Miles Mancinelli said, “and we decided on ‘Oples’.” “Then we threw in an adjective. ‘Fat’,” Clayton King said, thus deciding on calling their band the Fat Oples. The Fat Oples formed a year ago and have since been working on about twenty-five original songs, most of which are yet to be completed. The band meets up a few times per week in order to

practice, and they usually work for about ten hours straight. Mancinelli plays the piano and is learning to play the bass, Clayton plays the guitar, and both of them sing. Their other members, Mateo Rudich and Liam Patrick, play drums and guitar, respectively. Their most recent song is called “You’re Gone”. Some of their favorite songs they have made include “The Wasteland” and “Spiritualness”. “Listen to the Color of Your Name” will be their first rock song. The Fat Oples’ music can be heard on Soundcloud.com/ thefatoples, which is where they upload their completed work for anyone to hear. They also have a Facebook page (facebook.

Theatre enthusiasts will be pleased by the variety of shows soon to be available in the Ukiah area. Many students at Ukiah High are in these productions, and have put in countless hours of practice, perfecting their craft for the enjoyment of audiences. One production is Measure for Measure, a play at Mendocino College that is a modern version of Shakespeare’s original, directed by Reid Edelman. “It’s going to be awesome,” said freshman Zoë Moré, an actress in Measure for Measure who plays the role of the executioner Abhorson. Moré is joined by several UHS students in the production, including seniors Thomas Kenney, Arielle Gitlin-Frey, and Gabriel Suddeth, and junior Miles Mancinelli.

The performance’s story, follows court judge Angelo’s rule in Vienna during the Duke’s absence. Measure for Measure will be shown from March 21-30. The next performance is a production of The Laramie Project by SPACE, directed by Joel Shura. The Laramie Project, originally created by a group known as the Tectonic Theater Project, is a play about Laramie, Wyoming’s reaction five weeks after the hate-crime-murder of gay university student Matthew Shepard in 1998. One of the Ukiah High students involved

in this show is Erinn Yepiz, a freshman. The Laramie Project will be shown from March 7 until March 16, 2014. Exact times of individual showings can be found at their URL, www. spaceperformingarts. org. A third performance with Ukiah High students involved in production is the Ukiah Players Theatre’s Evil Dead: The Musical, directed by Jenny Peterman. This musical “tells the tale of 5 college kids who travel to a cabin in the woods and accidentally unleash an evil force,” according to Ukiah Players Theatre’s website at www. ukiahplayerstheatre.

org. It is horror themed, but is intended to be funny at the same time. Actors and actresses from Ukiah High include senior Lilly Mayfield, junior Ma-Kayla Hunter, and sophomore Shannon Sawyer. Two UHS students are involved in a more directorial role in this include assistant director Kaley Keiser (10) and assistant stage manager Bailey Grivette (10). Those attending Evil Dead might want to be prepared, as sitting in the front-most rows may end up splashed with (fake) blood. It will play from March 14 to April 5, 2014. Exact times are on their website.

California. Do you see an ’s’ on the end of that word? No? Curious. It would seem that a Mr. Tim Draper does. For those caught unaware, Mr. Draper not only sees Californias when he looks at our state, no, he sees six. The Secretary of State for California gave Mr. Draper’s plan to split our glorious state into six MUCH smaller states. For all intents and purposes, this is absurd. One can expect that many have heard of the move to split California in two before, but six separate states? What is even more curious is that in Mr. Draper’s plan Silicon Valley, San Francisco and San Jose have all been lumped into one of the new states called, Silicon Valley. Oh, and has it been mentioned that Mr. Draper is a resident of this area?? The point being made here is that there are circumstances that are in play which point to the idea of an ulterior motive behind Mr. Draper’s plan. Here are some of the facts about Mr. Draper’s plan. 1) The six states would be listed as follows from north to south: Jefferson State, North California, Silicon Valley, Central California, West California, and South California. The current capital would be lumped in North

California. 2) What would be the state of Silicon Valley would be comprised of some of the richest regions in and around the bay area. 3) Mr. Draper’s plan needs over 800,000 signatures to be put on the ballot as a referendum this year. 4) Congress would still need to approve the division of California. Especially concerning those last two facts, Unionists can breathe a sigh of relief. It is important to remember that California is incredibly diverse and has remained extremely resilient to efforts to split it in the past. The squabbling by Mr. Draper has done little to change that. The most important thing to remember; however, is point number four. Never in one million years would Congress wish to split California into six states. This would mean essentially 12 senate seats for the region of California, which, by the way, has a tendency to lean left of center. For those who agree with splitting California, allow me to quote Ukiah High Sixth Man, “Cry about it!” It just will not happen… period. What is it about fame and fortune that makes these superstars feel as though they are also superhuman, exempt from the health risks associated with the abuse of illegal substances? It could be partly genetics that create these addictive personalities, weakening the individual’s ability to say no. Stronger than internal addictions though are the pressures from surrounding humans. The attention that the media sheds on those who are famous is not only exploitive, but also destructive. The media creates these unrealistic ideals that individuals feel they must keep up with, whether it be the way they look, who they hang out with, or what they choose to spend their money on.

paced of life often lead to shortcuts as well as instant decisionmaking. Think of the pressures within a micro setting, for example a high school. There are people kids want to impress, there is pressure from fellow peers, and there is the idea that doing drugs will may someone “cool”, as well as the curiosity to see what all the hype is about. Now magnify the situation to that on the global stage. These famous people are trying to keep up with everyone else in Hollywood or New York, to follow the crowd and fit in with everyone else who is over consuming drugs. Beyond the peer pressure is the overarching culture of drug abuse among the elite. As far away as these famous indi-

Oh Yeah! It is the loveliest time of the year; Valentines Day has past. Eewww! Valentines Day in America is exaggerated. The holiday, although, does have a beautiful side to it. It should be celebrated by people who have been together or in love for a certain period of time. In America, especially in high schools, teenagers take the holiday to a whole new level that is so unnecessary. Sheesh! On the Day of Love, look around. There are all these people just making out. The day before V-day they probably did not even know each other’s last name. Then the next thing, the guy is grinding a girl up against the wall. Another factor that ruins Valentines Day is couples who claim they are in love when they truly are not. After two weeks those couples will likely break up, hate each others’ guts, and never talk to each other ever again. Teenagers do not know what

love is. There is a difference between loving a person and being in love with a person. Loving a person like a friend is entirely different than a girl or guy saying, “I am in love with Joey. “ People think they understand love and believe that they know what it means. People need to get some common sense and go look up the definition. Now teenagers can be in love. Couples, for example, who have been together since the 8th grade have confessed that they were in love, but were unaware they were. To know what true love is and who a person’s soul mate is takes years of observation-that does not mean experience. Look at people in American pop culture: Elizabeth Taylor had eight marriages, Kim Kardashian two, Jenifer Lopez three, Tom Cruise three, and Billy Bob Thornton five. Here is a disturbing statistic: fifty- one percent of all mar-

riages will go through a divorce. Finding true love or a soul mate is no walk in the park. Valentines Day is important and sweet to those lucky people who actually have something to celebrate, for they have gone through good, bad, and ugly times together as one unit. What is funny is when people claim that they have gotten struck by Cupid’s arrow and are now in love with a person. Those people obviously lack knowledge and are mistaken. Cupid has nothing to do with Valentines Day. Valentines Day is remembering the Christian Saint, Saint Valentinus. Saint Valentinus was executed for holding weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to be married by the Catholic Church. Cupid is the Greek God of love. Early in history people were persecuted for believing in Jesus in the Greek Empire. There were wars between these

two nations. It is very apparent that people who bring the involvement of Cupid into the holiday are completely ignorant. There is nothing wrong for having a Valentine or asking out a person on Valentines Day. It is sweet and cute. Yes, it may be cheesy, but who is to judge? It is entirely different and not as embarrassing or foolish as people claiming they are in love. So, people, have a nice Valentines Day, but do not be a fool; put away the tool!

The World Says Farewell To Flappy Bird

Alex Epstein

Staff Writer

Flappy Bird is taking over. The best option for survival is to delete the application from the phone and pray temptation will not take over. Flappy Bird has caused more timeouts, referrals, and angry teachers than any other creature of the App Store. This bird is a menace and thankfully, the apocalypse has started to die down. Flappy Bird is a game in which a small yellow or red bird flies through Mario inspired pipes. The goal is to go through as many of these pipes as possible before crashing into them. Crashing into them is a huge instigator for anger and frustration, especially when one is almost to their high score. The addicting game designed for smartphones and tablets was recently taken off the App Store by the owner because he could not handle his newfound fame. He was making $50,000 a day for the small band of advertisements at the top and bottom of the app. He could not handle the fame!? He created one of the most addictive and amazing, yet hated games of the 21st century and offered it for free! And now, Flappy Bird is gone, leaving a wake of knockoffs in its place. It is ridiculous that he took Flappy down. Most people, when making $50,000 per day, would try to keep their money coming in for as long as possible! What was his reason!? It must be that he was avoiding a lawsuit from Nintendo, or maybe because of all those diehard fans, he was scared for his life. No one knows. This love-hate emotion for this game has caused many

heart wrenching moments. There were many reviews on the App Store that confirmed the love-hate relationship. One reviewer by the name of Devil Bird said, “…When I close my eyes, I see Flappy Bird. I haven’t eaten, I see Flappy Bird on the food on my plate. I hear him in the voices of those I love.

Flappy Bird is no bird. Flappy Bird is Satan. He ruins my life. I hate Flappy Bird, but, at the same time, I love him. Flappy Bird will stay with me forever.” Now, let us take a moment of silence for Flappy Bird. He had a great run, however short that may be. He had a hard life of being yelled at and broken into small pieces when the screen cracked. However tough it may be, Flappy Bird knew; he knew that behind it all, he was loved. Thanks for the silence. Flappy Bird will be remembered and revered for as long as iPhones and Androids are sold. The original owners will never let the legend die.

Unsatisfactory Sochi Accomplishments

Hello Wildcats, pretty big month as far as athletics go here at not only the high school, but as a country in general. Sochi Olympics just finishing up and the has done pretty well, I have another article on this page covering that more in depth, but still the hockey team and slope style skiers both did well representing the good old US of A. NBA All star weekend happened this month, nothing too special, but the teams set a new record in points scored in a game. This is not hard when it is basically a back yard pick up game with the best athletes and basketball players in the world who don’t play defense. There were some cool dunks and plays during the game, but it was all expected. Next month is March, which has a special ring to it for sports fans all around. March Madness baby. All I know is my boy Doug McDermott will put the team on his back and go far. He is a monster at scoring from anywhere on the court. This is an unpredictable game where anything can happen with that many teams that are so close to one another in skill to pick a clear winner. But if I had to guess I would have to go with Syracuse, after watching that game against Duke, I was convinced. Trade deadline was February 20th and the Warriors benefitted from it pretty greatly. We traded Kent Bazemore and Marshawn Brooks for L.A. Laker and back up point guard Steve Blake. He should provide the Warriors with some pretty good minutes to help Steph and now Crawford will be able to play the 2, which is a more natural position for him. Shout out to my boy Abe Rawles:

All I have to say about Super Bowl XLVIII is one word. Crapp. This was supposed to be the ultimate battle with the number one offense vs the number one defense. However, the number one defensive Seahawks flew over the heads of the Broncos. It was disappointing over all. Peyton Manning was having the greatest season for any quarterback in the history of football, at least up to this point. A delinquent that needs to be put away in the sports world is in the realm of sports announcers. The worst one is Joe Buck. Jeeze Louise, that guy makes me want to change the game. He just ruins it. He announced for the Superbowl. He announces for football and baseball sporting events on CBS and FOX. The guy looks like a dried up prune. Buck has a good voice but he says the dumbest things, Buck does have a close competitor and that is Clark Kellogg. Kellogg does not have that voice that keeps a sports fan glued to the game and T.V. When he talks, I mute the volume. He has good knowledge although he just does not cut it. He sounds like a nerdy twelve year old. Even Mr. Silva-Brown, an amateur announcer for the school, does a better job than Mr. Antlers and Mr. Cereal. Brown practices all the time in his bathroom with his special “announcing comb” in the mirror. Great announcers are Dick Vitale, Marv Albert, Johnny Most and Ross Hudges . They just make it “Awesome, Baby.” There is always something to complain about in sports, but overall, we must admit it is glorious. Shout out goes to a personal friend of mine. Shout out to Zack Arnerich, the frosh who drains half court shots like nothing.

The 2014 Winter Olympics began earlier this month in beachfront Sochi, Russia Now that the Olympics have finshed up the final medal standings are: Russia, 33 total and 13 gold. United States, 28 total and 9 gold. Norway 26 total and 11 gold. Canada 25 total and 10 gold. Overall it was a very successful Olympics for the US but it is hard to compare to the 37 medals that the US brought home from Vancouver in 2010. Some highlights of the games this year were the US hockey team beating the home team of Russia 3-2 in an overtime shootout, and the sweep of the new Olympic event, slope style skiing, by the US. However, there is always some bad news. The US women’s hockey team lost in over time to Canada. Canada ended up scoring two goals in the final four minutes of regulation, tying the game. They then scored another one early in the first overtime peroid. The two teams are considered to be far ahead of all other competition in the rest of the world. In other surprising news snowboarding legend Shaun White ended up in fourth place in his favorite snowboarding half pipe event. White was the two time defending gold medalist, who was also considered “untouchable” by any of his fellow competitors. NBC has all of the rights to the Olympics and exclusively covers them. There has been some controversy involving NBC and skier Bode Miller. Bode is the oldest US athlete to compete in the Olympics, losing in maybe his last Olympics. Understandably, he was pretty emotional after his race while on the sideline. An NBC reporter came up to him, while he was crying and pressure him into answering questions, not only about the race but his brother, who had died earlier this year from a seizure. After asking him basic questions about the race and his brother, all the

while crying, she asks him this, “When you are looking up at the sky at start, we see you there and it just looks like you’re talking to somebody, what’s going on then?” At this point Bode breaks down and does not finish the interview. Twelve hours later NBC still chose to air the interview and has received a lot of flak from viewers and fellow journalists. The US speedskating had especially high expectations coming into Sochi this year expecting to medal in several events. They fell way behind in competition and began to blame their new Under Armour suits The competitors said that were flawed with a hole in the back of the suits and they were not tested for competition The mens ski cross quarter finals in Sochi literaly came down to a photo finsh. The Finish, Russian and Swedish skiers rounded the final turn in the race and all crashed into one another. This crash led to them all falling and sliding across the finish line at the same time with one athlete winning by less than an arms length. US and Canada played one another in hockey matches for the Olympics. President Obama and the Canadian leader, Stephen Harper, each bet a case of beer on each game. By now everyone knows that the US lost to Canada and did not bring home a medal. In Chicago there was a funny ad that went viral on the internet. It had both a US and Canadian flag with Justin Bieber in the middle with a caption saying, “Loser gets Bieber!”. After the tragic loss to Canada the ad was updated to have a picture of an eagle with a gold chain around it saying “Belieber”. Everyone bashes any of the “sliding” sports in the Olympics, for requiring little to no skill. Fortunately luge skeleton and bobsled accounted for seven of United States medals. Without these, the US would have been far behind in the count. Womens ski jumping was finally made an Olympic event. The male version has been around since 1924 when the Winter Olympics started. The United States has pushed hard to have more female events added,

UKIAH HIGH ATHLETES IN THE SPORTLITE

Pablo Gonzalez, senior at Ukiah High School, is a very successful player on the wrestling team. Gonzalez placed 1st in 6 tournaments this year and has placed in different tournaments in past years. He explained how difficult the sport pushes him to his limits mentally and physically. A lot of wrestlers contemplate if they should continue to wrestle, and if it is worth it. “When you stick through, that’s when you see the glory of winning tournaments and matches,” said Gonzalez. He admits that wrestling is a tough sport. Not just the training but the mental aspect, is also challenging. Athlete: Pablo Gonzalez “When you go into the gym you can sometimes find people crying beSport: Boys Wrestling cause your body wants to quit on you sometimes,” he said. By: Ashlyn Bazzani & The gym gets really hot and playZoltan Jakab ers can feel the need to pass out. “You literally push yourself to the Photo Credit: Elijah Williams limit, or to the breaking point,” When he gets to that point he al-

ways thinks about the quote, “Suffer now and forever live as a champion.” This is what keeps him wrestling in some hard tournaments. Gonzalez joined the team sophomore year after football season had ended. The football coach then, Gary Cavender, and now the wrestling coach, interested Gonzalez in the sport. Gonzalez also has some plans for wrestling at college. He’s not sure, though, where exactly he wants to go. Gonzalez practices every day of the week including the weekends, except for Wednesdays, when he does not have much free time, and almost every weekend Gonzales has a tournament. Between matches he likes going home and taking a shower and especially taking a nap. “I like to sleep even on the way to tournaments,” said G.onzalez. Sometimes it’s very tough not having much time to hang with friends. Gonzalez takes wrestling seriously. He and teammate Joey Gradek go to

the Health Club in the mornings from 5:30 to 7:00. The usual workout is lifting weights, in the sauna, or working on their footwork. According to Gonzalez, some of the stories from the wrestling room are good but some are also bad. People fight, but only because that is the point of the sport. He recognizes that outside practice all wrestlers are friends. It is a really close convergent group. In the other seasons when he has a little more time for himself, he likes hanging out with his best friend, Anthony McCarthy. They usually play Xbox or watch movies. A weird fact, according to Gonzalez, is that water is his favorite beverage. “I love water, I know that most people prefer sodas, but for me water is the best,” said Gonzalez. Unfortunately, wrestling and his high school career is almost over. Although he will always be thankful for this school, for all the great experiences he had in here. Ukiahi will miss him too.

Serenity Voboril is currently a junior at Ukiah High School and the wrestling season for this year is coming to an end. The girl’s wrestling program this year has been pretty successful so far, and the most recent rank for them in the nation was 23rd. Voboril first became interested in wrestling when she was in sixth grade when her cousin was wrestling. She thought that she would see if she enjoyed it and want to keep doing it. She stopped after first trying it out that season. However, when she heard that the high school would have a team her freshman year, she thought it would not be a bad idea to go for it again and see if anything had changed with how she felt about wrestling. “When they said they were going to have a team for the high school I thought I might try it out,” said Voboril. Every year, the Ukiah High School boy’s wrestling coach, Cavender, gives out his own awards that he adapts to each player to show one or more of their strengths that they showed him over the season or have shown him

over past seasons. Voboril received one her freshman year when she was given the “Mental Toughness Award.” This award confirms her favorite part about wrestling. “I like the adrenaline rushes and the mentality that you get from it,” Voboril goes on to say that wrestling requires a certain amount of mental strength and stability to be able to do it because of the hard work that it takes and the amount of work that has to be put into it to be successful. Voboril also placed 4th at North Coast Sections last year and has won medals when she has placed in other tournaments. She also describes how her team is a very good tournament team because they fill thirteen out of the fourteen weight classes; this is an advantage since the team or group that has the most winners wins the tournament. “We have a good chance of winning Sections this year,” said Voboril. Vorboril has a lot of confidence in the girls that are in the wrestling program this year and she shows this

when she talks about her teammates and their accomplishments. Voboril also has a most memorable moment, which was when she was wrestling in her first match her freshman year. She broke her nose and she thinks that this event helped her push herself to become a better wrestler. Voboril also looks up to a couple of girls that she has watched at past tournaments including a wrestler named Ashley Schumann. She was the only girl wrestler for her school and is now a sophomore in college, but Voboril still remembers watching her matches. Voboril’s hardest classes include Physics and AP Psychology; her favorite class is online Trigonometry class. Voboril has high hopes for this and the seasons to come because of her advancing wrestling skills and the experience she has gained over the past years. She has also learned from her coaches Dygert and Roberts. She placed 8th in Sections this year, and also placed 3rd in league which shows her overall dedication and success.
