Welcome

Confession time

I am not a fan of winter - any part of it Snow, cold, frost, ice, less daylight, shoveling, blizzards, bad roads, cold fingers, frozen toes, runny nose, face pain, that muscle-bound-dressedin-9-layers-of-insulation-just-to-stay-1-dregree-warmer waddle, scraping windshields, icy wiper blades, mucky slush you get the picture Can you relate?

Or are you able to look past all that and feel the joy of spring’s promise that she’ll be back again soon? Does that help you enjoy what winter has in store for the next 8 months? I admire & applaud you! This takes supreme optimism and courage during a cold dark season

What other seasons are you ‘weathering’? And how can you get through each one trusting that brighter days of ‘spring’ with it’s fresh starts and resets will be soon to appear?

Separation and divorce may be a season in your life. It may feel like it could last forever, that you’ll be stuck in a permanent limbo waiting for all the details to be finalized.

Is it possible to ‘weather’ this season with optimism and courage? Can you trust, anticipate & EXPECT that it will all work out - even better than you’d imagined? Why not choose to set yourself up for success with a mindset that believes in spring

There is no way to know with absolute certainty what is possible until you try So don’t give up, my friend There are laws of time & nature that are eternal and consistent Work with them Trust them Expectation is one of them Why not choose to expect the best possible outcomes?

For more inspo (& a little pep talk!) check out my blog post “My Best Advise Is ”

And hey!! Merry Christmas, be cozy & wishing you your most fabulous year yet!

A TIME OF REFLECTION AND HEALING

During the divorce process, there is a time that seems the darkest It’s the winter of our life transition Carol Vecchio, a career counselor, uses a seasonal model to help us move through life transitions Our life season of winter is often a time of depression But it can also be a time of deep reflection

Our winters create the perfect space for reflection Winter is the transition time into new beginnings and the springtimes of our lives People start to think about what they want in the coming years These dark times remind us of what we don’t want and help create a new life with what is important to us

What are your hopes for your new life post-divorce? Are you happy with both your personal and professional life? Is it time to make a change? Does your job still fit your new life situation?

The actor Steve Harvey says, “You are never too old to reinvent yourself.” Reinvention comes with reflection and planning Reinvention is a big part of creating a new life after a divorce

Our lives are like the gardening process We start to plant the seeds of our spring and summer life seasons in our times of winter. It is in our darkest times of our divorce that we dream of a better future. We reflect on h t t d h t d t h

What steps do we want to take, and what are we willing to do to make our lives better? As we start to settle into colder days and long winter nights, do you need to reflect on what is important to you? What do you want your new life to look like? Do you need to reexamine your career and career goals? Do you need to rediscover and stand firm on your values? Will you start planting the seeds of your life now to create the future you want?

Journey Beyond Divorce

Uncover your limiting beliefs, heal your nervous system, reboot your self care, and rediscover who you are.

How amazing does all of that sound right?!

If you are a women going through a divorce, or a woman who has gone a divorce, and are finally ready to get off the emotional roller coaster and live differently, this 90 day transformational program is for you This program with feed your desire to connect deeply with yourself and help you trust yourself again We both know you are meant to be living a life of connection and presence, and that sometimes we all need a little help

Like most of us, you have probably been slugging away at “healing” on your own, wondering why you aren’t “healed” yet, why it’s such a slow process. Why Why Why . . .

And let me guess, you start feeling really good then BOOM, you feel like you took a bunch of steps backwards and are left wondering why again Maybe you are exhausted from “trying” to heal, exhausted from “working” on yourself, exhausted from 2 steps forward then a whole bunch backwards.

I get it! I was you, on the roller coaster of emotions wondering why I had good days, even great days, then back to terrible days. Wondering why no matter how hard I “worked” on myself I never felt truly better Healed Happy Constantly seeking more for myself and exhausting myself while I did it Wondering if I was broken, or if there was something wrong with me

TER DIVORCE

So let me ask you a few questions: how would it feel to get off the roller coaster? How would it feel to heal yourself on such a deep level the only path for you is forwards? How would it feel to find a feeling of safety again? How would it feel to finally have a deep and authentic connection with yourself that allowed you to live from a place of confidence and presence? To finally feel aligned with YOU?

This is possible for you! I know this because I found it for myself, the life I always saw myself living but always felt just out of reach I am now connected and present and living my biggest, boldest life I want this for you too! I just don’t want it to take as long for you as it did for me.

If anything I wrote here resonated with you, please reach out and let’s see if you are a fit for my 90 day program for women going through, or coming out of a divorce

5 TIPS FOR A HEALTHY SEPARATION

Most people have heard very sad and scary stories about divorce, and they do not want this to become part of their experience. Adversarial divorces have an enormous impact on physical and mental well-being, finances and are harmful to children. Fortunately, you ca separation in a better way

Here are some strategies to help separation:

1. Treat the other person coworker or business associat Be courteous, answer emails, texts timely and respectful manner, c information, and model desirable negative things about the other p especially on social media Follow th agreed to do These types of behavi when you are not in conflict with som forgotten when a dispute arises

2. Delay making any significant changes. Don’t withdraw or spend significant sums of money without the other person’s consent. Continue to pay bills as you have been until you have reached an agreement about your finances.

Keep in mind, you will need to work together until you reach a resolution If you have children, you will have an ongoing relationship as parents for years to come, even after your children become adults Try your best to not do anything you will regret down the road

In cases where people have children, and it is possible and safe to do so, wait to move out until you and the other parent have put together a parenting agreement and made financial arrangements for your home and living expenses

3. Wait to start a new relationship. Most often, a new partner on the scene can significantly disrupt the negotiation process and cause intense emotions, regardless of which person initiated the separation This can lead to complications when trying to work out your finances, parenting arrangements, or even spousal support

4. Seek professional mental health support for you and your children.

Separation can be a devastating and overwhelming time There aren’t only legal matters to work through Intense and complex emotions can arise These will most likely not resolve on their own, and people’s ability to work through issues and reach agreements may be impaired They may refuse to engage in a discussion, get stuck on a particular issue, or create conflict over uncomplicated matters

You may have the support of family, friends, and coworkers; however, you can benefit from speaking with a counselor or therapist who is objective and will provide emotional support without judgment

Children are almost always affected by their parents’ separation. Some may seem fine and others may act out. Either way, they too will need time to work through their emotions. Having someone neutral for them to talk to is important. Children have loyalties to both their parents and do not want to hurt their feelings. Sometimes it can be easier for them to be open ith someone ho is not

5. Discuss your options for an amicable divorce.

Look at using a collaborative process such as Mediation to resolve your separation matters This process gives you the opportunity to talk and work out issues in a more timely and economical way Start your dispute resolution process as soon as you are able The longer uncertainty continues, the more likely it is that communication will break down and conflict will arise However, keep in mind that people are usually not in the same place in the separation, and one may need more time to process information and work through emotions

Once again, do your research and get recommendations when looking for a mediator. Find someone who you both feel comfortable with and who has experience with these matters. You can still get legal and financial advice even if you go to mediation.

Separation and divorce can be challenging. You are dealing ith a loss and are experiencing a mixture of following these 5 Tips, you can set r a healthier separation where you can ons more quickly and affordably It will and willpower, but it will be worth it

“Stop, Look, & Listen to Your Inner Self”

Going through a separation or divorce is like being on a rollercoaster ride. It consists of a variety of ups and downs, some that are slow with steep climbs; or fast, falling downward with momentum There are curves that suddenly appear and jar you And parts that are flat and straight to allow you to breathe and prepare for the next part of the ride

It’s a whole body experience And each one of you experiences it differently – holding your breath, tensing your stomach, legs or jaw, maybe releasing stomach contents, dizziness, you may scream, you may laugh, and experience the different fears of falling or feeling out of control You may close your eyes and try to go into a protective position

The automatic responses whether on the rollercoaster or going through a divorce is partly your expressed personality but most importantly they are your unconscious body/mind expressions Many of these are learned or experienced from a young age and stored in your bodies at a cellular level. Including the coping mechanisms you have developed in handling situations as adults.

When I was going through my separation, my therapist helped me bring to my conscious awareness that the ways I responded in my marriage relationship and the ups and downs were strongly influenced by the death of my brother, when I was 6 years old. I was afraid of losing my husband; (I lost a brother that I loved and I felt out of control that I couldn’t save him) I became the cog in the wheel trying to keep the family together and protect them from being hurt; (my caring instincts and feeling responsible to protect my mother through her grieving) I overextended my natural tendency to be a people pleaser; (staying out of trouble so I didn’t hurt or disappoint my parents and brother)

These unconscious ways that I developed were an important part of my soul’s growth in my life At the time of my separation, it was important that I had the support of my therapist She assisted me in bringing the unconscious beliefs into my conscious awareness I gained confidence to be able to make the changes I needed to move through my separation and divorce The deeper understanding of working through loss, control, people pleasing, grieving, took me to another level in my soul’s growth

After 20 years of being a Synergy Practitioner, I continue with my intention to help you get off the rollercoaster Move through the physical pain or emotional hurts you are feeling through my unique and safe approach of body/mind/emotional integration So that you can Stop, Look, and Listen Connecting to your inner Soul to feel Confident and Empowered

“Joan’s method is a way of life It changes the way we see ourselves and how we walk in this world It truly gives you the opportunity to make life changes that are lasting ” B C

Fresh Start Mediation

Guiding Families Through Change

Divorce is a significant life transition, often accompanied by emotional, financial, and logistical challenges. Navigating this process effectively requires expertise, empathy, and a tailored approach that prioritizes both immediate and long-term wellbeing. Fresh Start Mediation offers a standout model that redefines divorce mediation, providing clients with specialized guidance and comprehensive support through every stage of their journey.

A Collaborative Team Approach

At the heart of Fresh Start Mediation’s success is its team of specialized mediators, each bringing unique expertise to address specific aspects of the divorce process This collaborative approach ensures that no issue be it financial, emotional, or parenting-related—is overlooked.

Don Schapira, a seasoned Financial Mediator, brings over two decades of experience in negotiation and mediation.

His role is critical in helping clients untangle complex financial matters such as asset division, budgeting, and financial planning Don’s focus is on ensuring transparency and fairness, empowering clients to make informed decisions about their financial futures

The Fresh Start Difference

Ann Davidson, serving as a Divorce Coach and Mediator, provides compassionate support to clients as they navigate the emotional landscape of divorce

Traditional divorce processes often involve adversarial court battles, which can exacerbate conflict, increase costs, and leave decisions in the hands of judges Fresh Start Mediation provides a stark contrast, offering a non-adversarial process that focuses on collaboration, understanding, and mutually beneficial solutions

Central to this approach is Fresh Start’s ability to uncover the core needs of each party. By delving deeply into these needs, mediators facilitate discussions that lead to practical, sustainable outcomes. This process reduces stress and minimizes the financial burden often associated with divorce, while empowering clients to maintain control over their agreements.

Flexibility and Customization

Lisa Huberdeau, a highly respected Parenting Mediator, prioritizes the needs of children

Her empathetic approach helps individuals manage stress, maintain focus on mutual goals, and approach negotiations with a clear mind Ann’s expertise ensures that the emotional hurdles of divorce do not derail progress toward a fair resolution. With her guidance, families develop parenting plans that promote stability, happiness, and security for their children Lisa’s experience ensures that the voices of children are considered while maintaining a collaborative, futurefocused approach for parents

Fresh Start recognizes that every family’s circumstances are unique, which is why flexibility is a cornerstone of its services Clients can choose from in-person sessions, video conferencing, or shuttle mediation, accommodating a variety of preferences and situations This adaptability ensures that mediation remains accessible and effective, regardless of logistical or interpersonal challenges.

Additionally, Fresh Start’s process integrates innovative tools such as interim planning and goal-setting. These features provide short-term stability and long-term clarity, helping clients make houghtful decisions about parenting, finances, and other critical matters By celebrating small milestones and focusing on achievable goals, clients gain confidence and a sense of accomplishment throughout the process

specialization leads to better outcomes By assembling a team of experts in financial, emotional, and parenting mediation, Fresh Start offers clients a level of expertise and support that few can match This approach ensures that every detail is addressed, leaving no aspect of the divorce process unresolved.

Moreover, Fresh Start’s non-adversarial process saves time, money, and emotional energy. By avoiding the adversarial nature of court proceedings, clients can focus on what truly matters: creating agreements that benefit their families and set the stage for a fresh start.

A Path to a Brighter Future

For those navigating divorce, Fresh Start Mediation provides not just a process, but a pathway to a healthier, more hopeful future Its unique blend of expertise, compassion, and innovation creates an environment where families can redefine their relationships and move forward with confidence. By prioritizing understanding, fairness, and long-term well-being, Fresh Start offers an unparalleled mediation experience. For families seeking a divorce process that is efficient, respectful, and empowering, Fresh Start Mediation is the clear choice.

MOVINGtoward SAFETY

Alberta has the highest rate of police-reported intimate partner violence in the nation, according to Statistics Canada, with 535 incidents per 100,000 population in urban areas This is a stark reminder that many survivors of abuse need greater hands-on help to escape gender-based violence situations Shelter Movers has recently arrived in Calgary and Edmonton to help meet this need

Since its establishment in 2016, ShelterMovers has opened 9 Canadian chapters and has completed over 6500 moves. The two Alberta chapters, which opened in September of 2023,havecompletedover20movesinjustfourmonths

When asked about the impact of Shelter Movers’ arrival in Alberta, the Honourable Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth said, “Shelter Movers’ expansion to Edmonton and Calgary is such an essential service because we know that one of the most dangerous times in the life of someone experiencing domestic violence is when they are trying to leave home I’m truly inspired by how their incredible team, who are mostly volunteers, work day in and day out to make sure that survivors of gender-based violence can move safely and quickly I’d like to ask Canadians to consider volunteering for Shelter Movers to strengthenyourowncommunitiesandimprovethequality

Shelter Movers provides free moving and storage services for referred clients, something no other Canadian charity offers The step-by-step process is done with dignity, high levels of security, and in strict confidence Planning and financing a move can be a daunting task during the best of times, but Shelter Movers believes fleeing an abuser should be safe and easy

oflifeofallCanadians.

Fleeing domestic violence takes courage and resources. Shelter Movers works with local women’s shelters, security services, vehicle rental companies, and storage companies to relocate survivors and their belongings. In the absence ofShelterMovers, survivorsrisklosingeverythingtheyown, or worse, staying in an abusive situation due to lack of support. To continue to provide this service to survivors at no cost, Shelter Movers is looking for more Albertans who have time to assist with moves, as well as businesses to partnerwith.

Harnessing the power of community through a variety of volunteer roles both in person and remote, Shelter Movers has opportunities to suit any preference and ability. Everyone has a role to play in ending gender-based violence.Ifvolunteeringisn’tpossible,considerdonating.

TOGETHERWERISE

Why didn’t she leave if it was so bad? It couldn’t have been that bad if she stayed that long. She looked like she was in a happy relationship. She never said anything to indicate that she was being abused. What does domestic violence mean to you? How do you define it?

Domestic violence is looked at as just physical, but in reality there are many forms of domestic violence; physical, emotional, mental and financial

You never enter a relationship with someone thinking that one day this is where you would end up Being mentally and emotionally beaten down, controlled financially to the point where when you realize how toxic the relationship is, you cannot leave because you do not have the financial means to do so

My name is Maj Osman, I am the President and Founder of Women on Wings Society We are a non profit organization that has been in operations since 2019 I started this non profit in memory of my mother Salwa Osman

As someone who left a 16-year marriage, I did not even know or realize how abusive the relationship was until I finally found the courage and strength to leave, not just for the sake of my mental and physical health but for my four children who were also suffering from this abuse. I could no longer watch them, watch me be beaten down on all levels.

I did not know at the time what resources were out there for women experiencing domestic violence.

Women on Wings Society was created to help women connect them with the right resources to help get them out of these situations, and to break these cycles and generational traumas.

Leaving is just the first step, healing the trauma is the next

We have collaborated with a trauma release therapist as well as a divorce coach who assists our clients on how to deal with a narcissistic ex We provide financial assistance, food hampers, and other supports pending the circumstances that they are in

All funds that we raise goes back to the community, as our board is a volunteer board of 6 powerful women who have a passion for this cause

We hold 2 fundraisers a year to help us raise funds to provide these services to our clients and assist them through what they are going through Together we Rise!

Making the Most of Mediation

Families engaging family law courts in Alberta are required to participate in at least one Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process before going to court Mediation is a recognized form of ADR Courts across Canada have made similar rules because mediation is recognized as an effective form of resolution for families It provides a great opportunity to save time, money, and resolve issues

Mediation is not a one-size-fits-all model. Styles can vary from mediator to mediator, so it is important to ask questions

What experience does the mediator have? I gained my knowledge and experience mediating family law disputes through my work as a family lawyer over the past ten years I also have training in trauma informed practice, biological impacts of separation and stress, and communication methods for high conflict individuals

Will the mediator share recommendations to assist the parties in generating options for settlement? My mediation style is to prioritize the participants generating their own options whenever possible, but sometimes parties can get stuck.

InthosecircumstancesIcanprovidemyopinionorsuggest additional options With other styles mediators might never becomfortableprovidingtheiropinion.

Willthemediatormeetwiththeparticipantsaheadoftimeto explain the mediation process? The length of preparatory time with the mediator can vary widely. I find process meetings very helpful to ensure that all participants understandhowmediationworksandhandleprocessrelated issues before issues are discussed I typically go over information on the difference between interests and positions, whatan“I”statementis, howtouse“I”statements, andhowtobringupissuesinanon-antagonisticway,among othertopics

Are the fees for mediation calculated on a flat-fee or an hourly basis? I offer mediation services on a flat-fee basis because I believe it allows parties to effectively budget for mediation. My flat-fee mediation services include a preparatory meeting, the mediation session, and a written reportingfollowingthemeeting Mediationmayalsobebilled based on the actual time spent by the mediator Knowing how parties will be billed is very important to adequately budget for the mediation process and avoid surprises when invoicesforservicesarereceived
