2011 Season Preview Sunny Jones begins her second year as the head coach of the Detroit softball team in the upcoming campaign. The Titans are looking to start fresh after a difficult 2010 season which saw Detroit register a 3-39 overall mark, including 0-24 against Horizon League opponents. While the Titans struggled through 2010, Detroit has seen two previous seasons in its history with fewer than three victories. In 1978, the first year of softball at Detroit, the Titans went 0-10 overall and in 1983, Detroit suffered through a 1-16 season. However, the year after each of those campaigns brought a considerable turnaround. In 1979, Detroit jumped to 14 wins (14-13-1 overall) and in 1984, the Titans posted a 25-game turnaround and finished in third place in the conference with a 26-18 record. 2011 features a roster of 10 newcomers including nine freshmen. Three individuals will return from last season. Juniors Renee Zaccagni and Rachel Copple will join sophomore Anna Bondy in the upcoming campaign looking to provide leadership to a young team. Bondy is the lone returning pitcher as she made 30 appearances and 25 starts in the circle in 2010. She captured two wins on the year striking out 47 opposing batters and completing 11 games. Others who will see time on the mound for Detroit will be newcomers Karyn McCarty, Erin Huddleston, and Julia Maksym. Maksym will see time pitching after coming to

Newcomer Whitney Stratton

Freshman Erin Huddleston

Detroit from Manistee, Mich. She currently holds the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) record in strikeouts (1,126), career wins (94), and wins in a single season (34) and helped her team reach the 2008, 2009, and 2010 District Softball Championships. Jones is looking for McCarty to step in right away after a high school career that saw her pitch 189.2 innings while recording 279 strikeouts with a record of 26-4 and an ERA of 1.07. “We expect her bulldog mentality to continue from the fall and have an immediate impact on our success,” commented Jones. With just three wins last season, two in the first seven games, Detroit went a span of 24 games in between its second and third wins and finished the year with a 10game winless drought. Hoping that the freshmen will quickly adapt to the college game, the 10th newcomer on this year’s squad is no rookie. Whitney Stratton spent her first two years of school playing at Muskegon CC. As a sophomore last season, Stratton helped the Jayhawks capture a NJCAA Division II national championship. In her team’s run, she was named All-Region, All-State, and first team AllConference after hitting .401 with 74 RBI. Stratton can play both shortstop and second base. She will be assisted in the middle with Copple who can also play both positions. Copple finished with five RBI

2011 Season Preview and seven walks in 94 plate appearances last year. Freshman Shelby Long will be utilized behind the plate. Long garnered first-team All-District, AllConference and All-Region honors as a junior in high school and as a senior, she was named All-District and All-Conference second team at Fort Zumwalt High School in O’Fallon, Mo. Staying in the infield, Katelyn Steffel will also see time catching while mostly playing the hot corner. In high school, she tabulated a career batting average of .470 with six home runs and 52 RBI. Huddleston will also play in the infield along with Sara Cupp and Alyssa Gietl. Huddleston can be a presence at the plate, play either corner infield spot, and also pitch. “We are looking for Erin to add some home run power and added experience after playing on successful high school and travel teams. She will also see significant time in the circle and at first base when not pitching,” stated Jones. Gietl’s flexibility will put her in a utility role this year. She will see time at first base and the outfield. Gietl, who hails from Plymouth, Mich., hit .421 including 61 hits, 15 doubles, and 52 RBI in her senior season. Throughout her high school career, she averaged a .406 clip with 195

hits 54 doubles and 173 RBI. Cupp was named All-Conference and All-Area as a first baseman in 2009 before moving to catcher in her junior and senior years at Milford, where she hit .596 and took home All-Conference, All-Area and AllDistrict honors. With the flexibility of this year’s roster and the newcomers looking to fill their roles on the roster, the last two contributors to the 2011 squad are Zaccagni and Hannah Klenk. Zaccagni, one of three returners from last year’s squad, finished with six RBI and five walks including a pair of doubles. She also started 39 contests at third base. Klenk comes to Detroit from Hamilton, Mich. and garnered All-Conference honors in her final three seasons at Hamilton. She was also a two-time AllArea, All-County, All-District and All-Region selection. “Some days we look pretty good because we’re just playing ball and not thinking too much and then the next moment we can look like freshmen but I’m looking forward to getting them going and starting new things,” commented Jones. A number of talented incoming freshmen hope to turn around the 2011 Titans as Coach Jones and her staff look to mentor the freshmen while relying on its returners to help the newcomers adjust to the college game and progress towards the Horizon League playoffs and a conference championship.

2010 Review The Titans are looking to put 2010 in the past as there is no way to hide it, Detroit had a rough season. The Titans went 3-39 overall and 0-24 in Horizon League play. With two wins in the first seven games of the season, Detroit went a span of 24 games in between its second and third wins and finished the year with a 10-game winless drought. Detroit earned its first win over Pennsylvania in Kissimmee, FL in the fourth game of the year. Anna Bondy pitched seven innings in the 8-6 victory. Kara Spinelli went 2-4 with a solo home run and three RBI to lead Detroit and Krissy Pitock added a two-RBI single in the fifth inning. The second win for the Titans came three games later against U of M Dearborn by a 9-2 margin as Bondy again went the distance allowing just six hits and two runs (one earned) on the day. Detroit put up seven runs in the final two innings as Jessica Liebner started the rally with a three-run home run in the 5th. A Katie Schaus RBI double scored Rachel Copple to complete the four-run output for the Titans. The final inning saw three of the first five Titan batters reach base via a walk followed by back-to-back RBI singles from Copple and Schaus to give Detroit two more runs. Pitock was hit by a pitch to round out the Titan scoring. Detroit would not see another victory until 24 games later when the Titans mustered a 1-0 win over IPFW in Fort Wayne. Spinelli pitched a gem for the Titans with three strikeouts, six hits, and a walk over seven innings. The winning run came in the Detroit fifth as Melissa Barrett hit an RBI single up the middle to score Schaus. The Mastodons were then retired in order in the fifth, managed only two hits in the sixth, and

2010 Review could not capitalize on a lead-off single in the final frame as the Titans held on for the win. Spinelli and Bondy saw all the action in the circle for Detroit in 2010 with Bondy making 30 appearances and 25 starts while Spinelli was in 23 games starting 11. Bondy captured two wins on the year striking out 47 opposing batters and completed 11 games. Spinelli struck out 59 batters and completed eight games for the Titans. Offensively, Detroit was led by Liebner’s 13 RBI in 99 plate appearances. Just two Titans hit over the Mendoza line as Liebner hit a teamhigh .222 and Erica Houthoofd finished second with a .214 clip. Detroit was outscored 401-64 and recorded 52 RBI as a team. While the Titans struggled through 2010, Detroit has seen two previous seasons in its history with fewer than three victories. In 1978, the first year

44

of softball at Detroit, the Titans went 0-10 overall and in 1983, Detroit suffered through a 1-16 season. However, the year after each of those campaigns brought a considerable turnaround. In 1979, Detroit jumped to 14 wins (14-13-1 overall) and in 1984, the Titans posted a 25-game turnaround and finished in third place in the conference with a 26-18 record. The Titans will look to move past 2010 and start 2011 on the path towards a conference championship.

Titan Softball Facilities Buysse Ballpark is home to the Detroit Titans softball team. Located on the northwest side of campus, the ballpark features stadium steating for fans, as well as one of the best natural grass fields in the Horizon League. In recent years, the facility has continued to expand with the upgrading of both dugouts and the addition of a scoreboard. In the summer of 2008, the field received a new bullpen and hitting cage area thanks to the man who the facility is named after, Roger Buysse. “All of the praise goes to Roger for his contributions to our program. We would not have what we have withouth his continued generosity,” said softball head coach Sunny Jones. For the 2011 season, more updates came for the ballpark as a new press box was constructed, the field received new dirt on both the infield and warning track, and also new wind screens featuring the Titan logo. The bullpen and hitting cage area is located down the left field line at Buysse Ballpark, just past the home dugout, making it easily accessible for practice and in-game use. The bullpen section features throwing lanes complete

with a netted back-stop in which two pitchers can warm up. The hitting cage is divided into three individual sections which are enclosed by netting with extra room at the beginning of the area, allowing players to use multiple stations at the same time. “With the playing surface now finished and the addition of the press box and wind screens coming for the upcoming season, Buysse will become a place where players want to play, ” added Jones. “I am pleased with our facilities and believe with the continued changes to improve it, we are turning our home field into one of the better fields in the Horizon League.”

2011 will feature a new press box

Horizon League

Entering its 32nd season of operation in the 2010-11 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models.

The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball). The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and for the first time in League history, women’s golf.

The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office. A PROUD HISTORY Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports in 198687. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joined in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.

Horizon League

ATHLETIC SUCCESS In the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by Butler’s 2010 NCAA men’s basketball championship game appearance where the Bulldogs fell to Duke, 61-59. The League has compiled a 10-7 record in the past five years in the NCAA tournament, ranking sixth among all collegiate conferences for winning percentage.

Green Bay’s women’s basketball team became the league’s first at-large bid to the NCAA Championship in 2010 with Cleveland State receiving the automatic nod. The Phoenix knocked off No. 5 seed Virginia in the first round before falling to Elite Eight participant Iowa State, 60-56. Men’s soccer has tasted victory in seven out of the last eight years (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last six seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. ACADEMIC SUCCESS Horizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past seven semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, including more than 600 for the last four semesters. Twenty-seven student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District teams in 2009-10, while 10 earned Academic All-America honors. COMMUNITY SERVICE In addition to its athletics success, the Horizon League has secured a well-earned reputation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day. The Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in Indianapolis during its annual summer meeting. In addition, several League men’s

basketball coaches coached barefoot to support Samaritan’s Feet, and the League’s schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual women’s basketball championship. On campus, studentathletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and Horizon League hurricane relief, while Commissioner hosting blood drives, neighborhood clean-ups, Jon LeCrone, 19th Year Big Brother/Big Sister programs and more. SPORTSMANSHIP One of the Horizon League’s points of emphasis is fostering collegial environments for competition among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by studentathletes, coaches, officials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events. DEMOGRAPHICS Horizon League institutions boast a combined enrollment of more than 130,000 plus nearly a quarter-million living alumni centered in the League’s Midwest footprint. League media markets include five of the nation’s top 35 in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, covering more than ten million television households and encompassing more than nine percent of the nation’s television audience. VISIBILITY The Horizon League has enhanced its media visibility with a number of initiatives. The League is in a threeyear agreement with ESPN that includes selected regular-season men’s basketball action (ESPN2) and the men’s championship game (ESPN) and features increased exposures each year on ESPNU plus inclusion in the annual O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters, one of college basketball’s premier in-season events.

Strength & Conditioning The main goal of the Strength and Conditioning Department is to help the student-athlete improve physically and mentally in their respected sport. This will be accomplished in such a way that is safe and efficient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activities we will work to lessen the possibility of injury or re-injury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete rehabilitation. Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, the physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program. The strength and conditioning staff will work with each individual coach at all times. Each coach will receive

updated attendance, evaluation, and comments on a regular basis about each student-athlete. Communication Joe Tofferi is the key to suc- Asst. AD for cess in the weight Strength & room and on the Conditioning playing field.

Nick Wilson Asst. Strength & Conditioning Coach

The Titans condition and train in the Larry Bleach Fitness Center, located in Calihan Hall. All UDM studentathletes are trained under the supervision of two fulltime certified strength and conditioning coaches. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is assigned a team, which allows daily interaction between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing a program that best serves the athlete and the team. In the past three years, the fitness center expanded by over 400 square feet. Olympic style platforms, squat racks, stretch and other auxiliary speed equipment have also been added, all designed and implemented to improve the Titans’ speed and power. The center also features the ONS Performance nutritional shake, which is designed to help every athlete recover from training and conditioning with a supplement increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake. The UDM strength and conditioning staff has not only helped the Titan student-athletes, but professional athletes as well. UDM graduate and current New Orleans Hornets’ guard Willie Green comes back to use the facilities during the offseason as well as major league pitcher and former Tiger Nate Robertson.

Sports Medicine

At the University of Detroit Mercy, the sports medicine staff is committed to providing the best care to all Titan athletes. Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Michael Miller coordinates and oversees the sports medicine services at UDM for over 250 student-athletes. The sports medicine staff is responsible for assessing athletic injuries and illnesses, administering first aid and CPR care, making medical referrals, and preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries that occur during the school year. The sports medicine department is under the guidance of Dr. Michael Workings, a family practice physician from the Henry Ford Health System. Dr. Workings also acts as the Team Physician for the Detroit Tigers. Dr. Terrence Lock is back as the team orthopedic, while joining the staff for the 2010-11 season is Dr. Rehal Bhojani and Dr. Patrick Jean-Pierre, who will provide clinic and game coverage. The athletic training facility is located at Calihan Hall. This training facility is equipped with a taping and first aid station, treatment and modality tables, hydrotherapy whirlpools, and rehabilitative equipment.

Academics/Compliance

When talking about students who compete in a varsity sport, the term typically used is “student-athlete.” The word “student” comes first, and that’s the way the University of Detroit Mercy approaches all of its athletic team members. Although performance in competition is important, they are students first, and athletes second, with their performance in the classroom plenty important in Titan Territory.

UDM’s Center for Student-Athlete Development, one of the first of its kind, offers programs for academic classes, drug education, student enhancement and works to improve communication skills. All 19 varsity teams are encouraged to take full advantage of the programs offered at the center. The center also heads up the NCAA Life Skills Program, which focuses on the student in student-athlete and how to deal with issues that all student-athletes today must face. Through seminars, guest speakers and NCAA videos, student-athletes are made aware of issues such as gambling and drug and alcohol abuse, and how to deal with these concerns. The center is made possible, in part, by a grant from the NCAA. In conjunction with the staff of the University Learning Center, members of the center’s staff teach UAS 107, “Athletes in Transition,” each year. All freshman and transfer student-athletes must take this course during their studies at UDM. The course deals with how student-athletes can make the transition from high school to college. This important class teaches student-athletes to deal with time and stress management, study skills and the importance

of good nutritional habits.

Another example of Detroit’s commitment to its student-athletes’ academic Steve Corder Amy Paling excellence is the Asst. AD for Asst. Dir. of NCAA Compliance/ Athletic AcaCompliance Academic Cord. demic Coordinator’s post. Since the position was created, UDM’s graduation rate for student-athletes has steadily risen. Assistant Athletic Director For NCAA Compliance Steve Corder, no stranger to collegiate athletics as he played soccer for Detroit from 1994-98, and his staff carefully track each Titan’s academic progress to make sure they are on the right path toward graduation. In addition, student-athletes are helped with their tutorial needs through the use of the student-run Learning Center, where professors and students donate their time as tutors. The student-athletes’ academic progress is closely monitored and study table is set up to assist the Titans with any and all academic areas, including providing tutors and a writing lab. The center is open daily and also has evening hours to work around a student-athlete’s busy schedule. All freshmen must take part in the study table, as well as other studentathletes who have not yet achieved a 2.75 GPA. The University of Detroit Mercy is committed to the principles of institutional control in operating our athletic department. We are responsible for adhering to the rules, regulations and spirit of the NCAA, Horizon League and the University. The University of Detroit Mercy Compliance Office directs this effort and acts a primary resource concerning NCAA rules, regulations and compliance issues. We ensure that our institution complies with all NCAA standards and we are responsible for monitoring all athletic programs to assure compliance.

Athletic Director Keri Gaither was appointed as the University of Detroit Mercy’s director of athletics in May of 2007.

Soon after taking the helm of the department, Gaither announced the expansion of the Detroit Titans Division I sports program from 16 to 19 teams with the addition of men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis. In her first year, Gaither also expanded the athletic staff by adding eight full-time positions to the department and directed the building and completion of a new $1.6 million all-purpose synthetic turf field and track. Gaither also led a successful fundraising campaign for the renovation of the men’s basketball office suite and oversaw the building of a new tennis complex that includes eight new courts and a tennis pavilion in addition to a new grass practice field for soccer and lacrosse. Recently Gaither was recognized for her strong leadership as UDM’s Director of Athletics when she was appointed to the University’s senior leadership team as a member of the Associate Vice President’s group in June of 2007. Gaither also chaired the Detroit Local Organizing Committee for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four, which was played at Ford Field in Detroit, as the University of Detroit Mercy served as the host institution. As the committee’s Chair, Gaither provided strong leadership for the DLOC and maintained ultimate responsibility for the local operations of the Final Four event. Gaither held the same position, in addition to being designated Tournament Director, for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional which broke all previous NCAA Regional attendance records with over 57,000 people each day at Ford Field. For the three years preceding her appointment as A.D., Gaither served as second in command for the Detroit Titans athletic department and also supervised nine Titan women’s varsity sports as the senior associate athletic director. During her tenure in that position, Gaither played an instrumental role in the planning and implementation of women’s golf in 2004 when it became UDM’s 16th varsity team. Prior to her selection as A.D., Gaither had served in several key administrative roles for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics including stints as senior woman administrator and director of business operations. As a current member of the Horizon League’s Executive Council, Gaither is actively involved with League operations. She has served on both the finance and television committees. She is also the council’s liaison to the track and cross country coaches and has served as the past liaison to the sports information directors.

While a member of the 2006 UDM Self-Study Steering Committee for NCAA Athletic Certification, Gaither also served on the Equity and Student-Athletic Welfare Sub-Committee and was designated the campus liaison during the certification process. Shortly after the University received its full certification in April of 2007, Gaither was asked by the NCAA to serve as a PeerReview Team Member. Past University appointments include chairing UDM’s prioritization sub-committee and serving on various search committees. She is a past Board Member for the University of Detroit Mercy’s Women’s Studies Program and served on the Women’s Studies Program Development Sub-committee. Gaither participated as a member of the Tourism Action Group (TAG) Hospitality Committee, a group organized by the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau dedicated to training the hospitality industry for Detroit-area events such as the 2005 MLB All-Star Game and Super Bowl XL, as well as future events. In 2006, Gaither completed the NCAA’s inaugural Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Females, a leadership development program sponsored by the NCAA Office for Diversity and Inclusion and the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. The Leadership Institute, designed to address the critical shortage of senior-level minority administrators at NCAA member institutions and conference offices, prepares diverse leaders through a 12-month leadership training and skills development experience. Gaither served as a past steering committee member of the Women’s Leadership Symposium for Intercollegiate Athletics and recently assisted in coordinating its national leadership conference. Gaither is also a member of National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators, National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and Minority Opportunities Athletic Association. She currently serves on the NCAA’s the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee as well as the Executive Committee of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association. In March of 2008, Gaither was presented with the Phenomenal Women’s Ashley Gray Legacy Award by the University of Detroit Mercy’s Student Programming Board. This award was presented for her outstanding contribution toward the growth and development of students as the director of athletics at UDM. Graduating magna cum laude from the University of Detroit Mercy, Gaither earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. During her undergraduate studies, she was a two-time recipient of the College of Liberal of Arts’ Economics Student of the Year Award. Gaither and her husband, Brad Trombley, reside in Pleasant Ridge with their two children, Elliott (19), a junior, who is also Detroit’s fencing team, and Kennedy (12).

Titan Hall Of Fame UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. The Hall of Fame now has 112 members, following the 10 latest additions made on Homecoming Weekend on Jan. 26, 2010. The 2002 induction dinner was truly one to remember. The inductees included two of the Titans’ former basketball All-Americans, Terry Tyler and John Long – or Thunder and Lightning, as L-R: Adam Walicki, Joe Kopicki, Kim Jess, Pat Adams, Ken Dubois, Mike Pesci, Maria they were affectionately Pandele (Not Pictured: Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips, Cassandra Pack) known during their playing The 2010 Titan Hall of Fame Class was inducted at halftime of the men’s basketball days – as well as the 1960 game against Wright State on Jan. 26. Titan football team as a unit. Additionally, the beautiful new Hall of Fame display in the Calihan Hall lobby was unveiled that night for a crowd which would fill the arena’s main floor during the induction dinner. Long and Tyler were part of one of the winningest eras of Titan basketball, having helped their team to an 86-25 record over their four years combined. They helped the Titans to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977, and an NIT appearance one year later. Long was the only player ever to lead the Titans in scoring for four straight varsity seasons, and he’s still the secondleading point producer in school history. Tyler, meanwhile, is the all-time Detroit leader for blocked shots in a game, a season and a career. He is also second in career field goal percentage and sixth in scoring. The pair’s old coach, none other than Dick Vitale, was the keynote speaker at his former players’ induction dinner. The present-day ESPN/ABC telecaster kept the audience captivated for more than an hour with his memories of coaching the Titans. The 1960 football squad became the first team ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse. That team finished the season 7-2 – the winningest U-D record of the post-World War II era. Two of those victories, over Cincinnati and Xavier, came by shutout. Future pro stars Larry Vargo, Bruce Maher, Steve Stonebreaker and Jerry Gross were all part of the 1960 Titan roster. The most recent induction class included four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips and, from the women’s team, Cassandra Pack – as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and field (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).
