THE STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS When Robert Vowels began the job as Director of Athletics for the University of Detroit Mercy on July 8, 2013, his first initiative was to develop a living, breathing document to serve as a guide for the Athletic Department. With the help of Dr. Don DiPaolo, Leadership Minor Coordinator for Detroit Mercy, the athletic department created a five year strategic plan that will shape the vision for the future. This strategic plan will be reviewed bi-annually to ensure the athletic department continues on the right path for the future. The athletic department strategic plan was a nine month process that was created by the strategic planning committee for Detroit Mercy Athletics. Every single person employed in the athletic department has had input on this strategic plan either as part of the committee or a member of a goal team. Campus partners from student affairs and faculty were included on the strategic planning committee to ensure the athletic department strategic plan was in line with the university strategic plan. The document was completed and approved by the President and Athletic Department Board of Directors on May 21, 2014.
