Detroit Titan Tennis 2011-12 Coaching Staff University of Detroit Mercy Director of Athletics and Associate Vice President Keri Gaither announced that Pjotrs Necajevs was named the head coach of the Titan women’s tennis program on Jan. 11, 2012.

The hire marked the eighth time a head coach has been named since the inaugural year of Detroit women’s tennis in 1992-93.

“I am thankful to Keri and the Titan family for providing me with this opportunity,” said Necajevs. “We have the resources here to develop a quality program and I will work as hard as I can to develop this program in the right way which includes bringing in local and great lakes talent.”

Necajevs took over as the interim head coach during the 2010-11 season.

His first match saw Detroit post a 7-0 victory over Valparaiso. Necajevs went on to lead the Titans to a 6-5 dual match record the rest of the way, including a third-place finish in the Horizon League playoffs.

“We are excited to be able to make this announcement,” said Steve Corder Assistant Athletic Director for NCAA Compliance and Men’s Tennis Sport Supervisor. “We have full confidence that Pjotrs will consistently have our women’s tennis program competing for Horizon League Championships.”

Necajevs began coaching tennis with the Titans during 2010-11 serving as a graduate assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams before being promoted to the interim head coach position on March 24.

Prior to that, Necajevs was a two-year letter winner on Detroit’s men’s team. He ended his Titan career in 2009-10 as just the third tennis player in Horizon League history to win back-to-back Player of the Year awards after going 30-4 on the year and a perfect 7-0 in the conference. He dominated conference play with six of his seven wins coming in straight-set sweeps. In his Motor City career, he was 55-8 in singles, all from the top position, with a 14-0 record in conference meets.

He was named the team MVP both years and received the 2009 Titan Newcomer award at the annual UDM President’s Athletic and Academic Honors Luncheon. Off the court, he was a member of Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC), and earned academic honors by being named to the UDM Athletic Director’s Honor Roll twice and also to the Horizon League’s Academic Honor Roll. As a senior, he also received the Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award, which recognizes student-athletes who display admirable conduct both on and off the courts.

Necajevs graduated from the University in May, 2010, with Bachelor’s Degree in Business and is currently enrolled in UDM’s MBA program.

Detroit Titan Tennis 2011-12 Coaching Staff Katie Taylor begins her first year as a graduate assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s tennis programs at UDM in 2011-12. Taylor is no stranger to the university after graduating in the spring of 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in both criminal justice and psychology while competing on the women’s track team in sprinting and hurdles events.

Taylor is currently pursuing a master’s degree in intelligence analysis at UDM and recently served as an intern at the GM Global Security Information Center.

She hails from Yale and is one of nine children. At Yale High School, she earned letters for volleyball, track and field and basketball.

Graduate Assistant Coach Katie Taylor Diana Ospina-Taylor brings professional experience in her first year as a volunteer assistant coach for the women’s tennis team.

She has been on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour for the last ten years achieving a world ranking of 231 twice in her career. She has competed in two Grand Slams, in the US Open and also the Australian Open. She has captured five International Tennis Federation (ITF) singles titles and was also part of one ITF doubles titles.

She has been teaching professionally at The Sports Club of West Bloomfield since 2008.

In September, Ospina-Taylor recently celebrated her two-year wedding anniversary with her husband Brad.

Detroit Titan Tennis 2011-12 Preview The 2012 dual-match season will commence on Sunday Jan. 22 at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield as Detroit will welcome the Western Michigan Broncos at 8:00 p.m.

No. 4 seed Wright State in the first round. A 4-1 victory took Detroit into the semifinals for the fifth straight year but it was the eventual champion UIC who scored a 4-0 defeat over the Titans.

“I’m looking forward to some close matches and how we’re going to execute with our returning players,” said first year women’s head coach Pjotrs Necajevs.

This season the roster will feature four returners and one newcomer as senior Amanda Cornwell leads the current group with 27 career singles wins and 32 double victories. The remaining roster of sophomore returners Raina Halabi, Julia Fernandes and Elena Strakhova along with newcomer Chloe Karoub round out this year’s group of Titans.

Necajevs begins his first year as the head coach of the team after being named to the position on Jan. 11, 2012.

Necajevs took over as the interim head coach last season prior to a 7-0 road victory over Valparaiso on March 26. He went on to lead the Titans to a 6-5 dual match record the rest of the season, including a thirdplace finish in the Horizon League playoffs.

“I think we have a good season coming up and our schedule is as strong as any team,” added Necajevs.

“We have some tough matches but I think we will be ready for them.”

A season ago, Detroit finished 6-18 overall and placed third in the Horizon League playoffs after a 4-2 victory over Butler in the third place match. Having a regular season 4-4 mark in conference play, the Titans entered the postseason as the No. 5 seed and matched-up with

Strakhova led last year’s team in Horizon League play with a team-best 5-3 singles record in dual-match play as four Titans posted four or more wins in Horizon League matches. Fernandes was part of the top Detroit pairing as her and last year’s lone senior Erin Weldon combined for 11 wins on the year. Weldon became the Detroit women’s tennis leader with 66 career doubles wins with an 8-4 over Butler helping the Titans clinch third place in the Horizon League Tournament.

Having five players means the Titans concede one point every match due to having five singles players and the need for Detroit to take both doubles match-ups to capture a point from the doubles portion of each contest.

Detroit Titan Tennis 2011-12 Roster 2010-11: Paired with sophomore Carolina Salas Espinosa at No. 1 doubles to win four out of six matches to begin Horizon League play... Started at No. 1 doubles with Espinosa in all but three dual matches in regular season... Shared a teamhigh nine doubles wins including closing the year with five out of seven wins...

Went 3-0 in doubles in the Horizon League Tournament. With Espinosa, started with an 8-2 win over Wright State’s top pairing in the first round before taking down UIC’s top duo 8-6, a win over the eventual Horizon League Champion. Finished the Tournament with a 9-8 (10-8) tiebreaker win over Butler’s best doubles team helping the Titans to a third place finish in the league... Started 17 singles matches at either No. 1 (eight times) or 2 (10 times) ... Won Horizon League singles match at Valparaiso (Mar. 26) playing in the No. 2 position winning 6-0, 6-1 in a 7-0 team victory... Named to the 2010 UDM Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

2009-10: Named to the All-Horizon League second team…She led the Titans on the year with 17 singles wins and tied for first with 31 total victories… Also a near perfect 7-1 in singles league play…Played mostly at No. 2, 3 and 4 in singles on the season, but did her best work at No. 3 where she went 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference…Her first collegiate victory was over Youngstown State’s Nicole Haralambopoul, 6-3, 6-0, at the Bowling Green State Invitational…Garnered her first conference victory, 6-4, 6-4, against Wright State’s Masha Peresetsky, a win that started a seven-match winning streak and eight of nine ledger… Named the HL Player of the week on Jan. 19 after defeating EMU sophomore Karina Ahuja (6-4, 6-4) at the No. 4 spot in singles competition, which came right after her 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles playing with freshman Carolina Salas Espinosa…Earned a 6-4, 7-6 (2) triumph over Green Bay’s Morgan Weuve at No. 2 in UDM’s 4-0 sweep in the first round of the conference championships…She also teamed with freshman Espinosa for the most part at top doubles, recording another 14 victories, which includes the Mastodon Invitational doubles flight title in the fall.

Named Division 2 All-Michigan in 2008, capping off a solid prep career… Reached second round of the state finals at No. 1 singles in final year at KHS… Played varsity golf in high school… Biggest tournament was an ITF event where she played singles and doubles, winning two doubles matches and received a world ranking in doubles.

Personal: Daughter of Tony and Tami Cornwell...Father, Tony, is a tennis player and instructor… Her two brothers were both nationally-ranked in tennis…

First Horizon League win in singles came in straight sets over Valparaiso (Mar. 26)... Paired with senior Erin Weldon at No. 3 doubles to win four of first six matches in the Horizon League... Finished the year with a team-best 5-3 in league doubles with Weldon... Captured victories in two of three singles matches in the Horizon League Tournament. The duo went on to win three straight with the next two over IPFW and Western Michigan... Won at No. 4 singles in a tiebreaking set with scores of 3-6, 6-1, 10-1 in a 7-0 team win over Valparaiso (Mar. 26)... Helped Detroit secure the fifth seed in the playoffs in the last match of the dual season with a 6-4, 6-2 win at Youngstown State (Apr. 17) at No. 5 singles... Detroit Titan Tennis 2010-11 Review The women finished the regular season at 5-17 overall and 4-4 in the conference and entered the playoffs as the fifth seed after starting the year 0-13. The team finished 6-5 overall after a midseason coaching change heading into a match with Valparaiso in which graduate assistant coach Pjotrs Necajevs was named the Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the season after Sam Poole resigned.

In the opening round of the Horizon League playoffs against No. 4 Wright State, a 4-1 win led to a match-up with a tough UIC squad in the semifinals. The semifinal appearance marked the fifth straight year the Titans have reached that point in the playoffs. The Titan championship hopes came to a close with a 4-0 defeat as UIC went on to win its 15th straight women’s tennis championship. Detroit ended the season with a victory in the last match of the year upending the third-seeded Butler Bulldogs 4-2 in the third place match.

Freshman Julia Fernandes helped Detroit seal third place in the conference with a win at both singles and doubles over Butler in the Horizon League’s third place match. She ended the year coming out on top in four of her last six singles match-ups and also claimed Hardest Worker honors as judged by the coaches. At No. 3 doubles with senior Erin Weldon the two finished the year winning three of their last five matches and Weldon became Detroit’s all-time women’s leader in doubles wins with 66. The duo downed opponents in six of their last 10 matches combining for four conference wins.

The final member of the team, junior Melanie Capuano, earned a solid Horizon League victory on Apr. 8 over Green Bay as she dominated a 6-0, 6-0 contest and went 2-2 overall at No 6 singles.

Sophomore Carolina Salas Espinosa was named the team MVP and also took home Horizon League honors being named to the All-League second team. Earlier in the season, she was named the Horizon League Women’s Tennis Player of the Week on Apr. 12. She finished the year with a team-best eight wins in dualmatch singles wins mostly playing at the No. 1 position.

She also played the final four matches of the year at No. 2 singles recording a 3-1 record.

She paired up with junior Amanda Cornwell at No. 1 doubles in all but three dual matches this year as the Titans had all six players total seven or more doubles wins. The sophomore ended the year winning five of her last eight singles matches as Detroit ended the dualmatch season 4-4 including a 4-2 mark in the Horizon League.

Freshman Elena Strakhova earned a team-best five Horizon League wins in singles. She finished the year with three wins in her last five matches including a 6-0, 6-2 defeat in the No. 3 position over Youngstown State in the final regular season match that helped the Titans clinch the fifth seed in the playoffs and also took home the team’s Most Improved award.

Strakhova and freshman Raina Halabi played together in doubles in every contest in the dual season. They captured nine wins including four in the Horizon League and four of their last five overall.

Tennis Facilities

The outdoor home of the Detroit Titans opened on Sept. 13, 2008 when the new Titan Tennis Complex, located immediately south of Calihan Hall, was unveiled.

Nearly a year after Titan Field was rennovated, Detroit welcomed a new varsity tennis complex, featuring eight hard courts and a viewing pavilion, as well as an additional athletic field.

The 4,000-square-foot covered pavilion is located at the north end of the facility. The venue also serves as home for the University of Detroit Jesuit High School & Academy boy’s tennis team, as U of D Jesuit was a major financial contributor to the overall project.

Horizon League In its 33rd season of operation in the 201112 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models.

The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University.

The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability.

It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the studentathlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball).

The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and for the first time in League history, women’s golf. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office.

A PROUD HISTORY Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year.

Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University.

Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history.

Youngstown State joined in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007.

On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.

ATHLETIC SUCCESS In the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted

by Butler’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA men’s basketball championship game appearance where the Bulldogs fell to Connecticut, 53-41. The Horizon League has compiled a 19-11 record in the past nine years in the NCAA tournament, ranking seventh among all collegiate conferences for winning percentage.

Green Bay’s women’s basketball team became the league’s first team to reach the Sweet 16 in 2011, knocking off Michigan State in the second round before going toe-to-toe with No. 1 seed Baylor in the regional semifinals. The Phoenix earned a No. 5 seed in the tournament, going 34-2 on the year and holding a perfect 16-0 mark in Horizon League play.

Men’s soccer has tasted victory in seven out of the last nine years (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In 2011, Butler was consistently ranked in the top 10 of the nation, earning the No. 13 national seed after becoming the last unbeaten team in the country. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last six seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06).

Horizon League Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS Horizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past nine semesters for carrying a gradepoint average of 3.2 or better, including more than 700 for the last four semesters. 24 student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District teams in 2010-11, while six earned Academic All- America honors.

COMMUNITY SERVICE In addition to its athletics success, the Horizon League has secured a well-earned reputation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day. The Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in Indianapolis during its annual summer meeting. In addition, SAAC is partnering with Special Olympics, putting on events for olympians in each community. Several League men’s basketball coaches coached barefoot to support Samaritan’s Feet and Coaches vs. Cancer initiatives, and the League’s schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual women’s basketball championship.

On campus, student-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighborhood cleanups, Big Brother/ Big Sister programs and more.

SPORTSMANSHIP One of the Horizon League’s points of emphasis is fostering collegial environments for competition among studentathletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by student-athletes, coaches, officials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events.

DEMOGRAPHICS Horizon League institutions boast a combined enrollment of more than 130,000 plus nearly a quarter-million living alumni centered in the League’s Midwest footprint. League media markets include five of the nation’s top 35 in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, covering more than ten million television households and encompassing more than nine percent of the nation’s television audience.

GOVERNANCE The Horizon League is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of the ten member institutions’ chief executive officers. Dr. Ronald Berkman, President of Cleveland State,

serves as Board Chair through June 30, 2012. John Parry, Director of Athletics at Cleveland State, serves as chair of the Executive Council, and Beth Goetz, Associate Athletic Director/ Senior Woman Administrator at Butler, is the Vice Chair and Shelia Patterson of Cleveland State serves as chair of the Faculty Athletics Representatives.

LEADERSHIP Jonathan B. (Jon) LeCrone is in his 20th year as ComHorizon League missioner of the Horizon Commissioner League, having been named Jon LeCrone- 20th Year to the position on May 11, 1992, and is the fifth-longest tenured commissioner among the 31 Division I conferences. He is the fifth commissioner in League history, succeeding Daniel B. “Tucker” DiEdwardo (1989-92), James W. Shaffer (1984-89), Cecil N. Coleman (1980-84) and James J. McCafferty (1979-80).

LeCrone is in the final year of a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Leadership Council after completing a five-year term on the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.

VISIBILITY The Horizon League has enhanced its media visibility with a number of initiatives. The League is in a three-year agreement with ESPN that includes selected regular-season men’s basketball action (ESPN2) and the men’s championship game (ESPN) and features increased exposures each year on ESPNU plus inclusion in the annual O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters, one of college basketball’s premier in-season events.

HORIZON LEAGUE NETWORK Having streamed more than 2,000 free, live events in the last five years, the Horizon League is a recognized leader in video streaming, through the Horizon League Network (HLN).

HLN takes viewers inside the conference, featuring studentathlete profiles, weekly highlight shows, comprehensive coverage of all 19 Horizon League championships and other special programming.

In 2010-11, HLN and HorizonLeague.com experienced unprecedented growth as more than 300,000 unique visitors across 149 countries/territories watched HLN coverage. Through the League’s partnership with WebStream Productions, HorizonLeague.com integrated both HorizonLeagueNetwork.tv and HorizonLeague.org, leading to record visitors to the new site. The 2010-11 season featured the 2,000th live event streamed by the League.

Strength & Conditioning The main goal of the Strength and Conditioning Department is to help the studentathlete improve physically and mentally in their respected sport. This will be accomplished in such a way that is safe and efficient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activities we will work to lessen the possibility of injury or re-injury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete rehabilitation.

Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, the physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program.

The Strength and Conditioning Staff will work with each individual coach at all times.

Each coach will receive updated attendance, evaluation, and comments on a regular basis about each student-athlete. Communication is the key to success in the weight room and on the playing field.

AD for Strength and athletes are Strength & Conditioning trained under the supervision Conditioning Assistant of two fulltime certified strength and conditioning coaches, as well as two intern assistants. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is assigned a team, which allows daily interaction between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing a program that best serves the athlete and the team.

In the past three years, the fitness center expanded by over 400 square feet. Olympic style platforms, squat racks, stretch and other auxiliary speed equipment have also been added, all designed and implemented to improve the Titans’ speed and power. The center also features the ONS Performance nutritional shake, which is designed to help every athlete recover from training and conditioning with a supplement increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake.

The UDM strength and conditioning staff has not only helped the Titan student-athletes, but professional athletes as well as UDM graduate and current New Orleans Hornets guard Willie Green comes back to use the facilities during the offseason.

Sports Medicine At the University of Detroit Mercy, the sports medicine staff is committed to providing the best care to all Titan athletes. Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Michael Miller coordinates and oversees the sports medicine services at UDM for over 250 student-athletes.

The sports medicine staff is responsible for assessing athletic injuries and illnesses, administering first aid and CPR care, making medical referrals, and preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries that occur during the school year.

The sports medicine department is under the guidance of Dr. Michael Workings, a family practice physician from the Henry Ford Health System. Dr. Workings also acts as the Team Physician for the Detroit Tigers. Dr. Terrence Lock is back as the team orthopedic, while joining the staff for the 2010-11 season is Dr. Rehal Bhojani and Dr. Patrick Jean-Pierre, who will provide clinic and game coverage.

Academics/Compliance When talking about students who compete in a varsity sport, the term typically used is “studentathlete.” The word “student” comes first, and that’s the way the University of Detroit Mercy approaches all of its athletic team members. Although performance in competition is important, they are students first, and athletes second, with their performance in the classroom plenty important in Titan Territory.

UDM’s Center for Student-Athlete Development, one of the first of its kind, offers programs for academic classes, drug education, student enhancement and works to improve communication skills. All 19 varsity teams are encouraged to take full advantage of the programs offered at the center.

The center also heads up the NCAA Life Skills Program, which focuses on the student in studentathlete and how to deal with issues that all studentathletes today must face. Through seminars, guest speakers and NCAA videos, student-athletes are made aware of issues such as gambling and drug and alcohol abuse, and how to deal with these concerns.

The center is made possible, in part, by a grant from the NCAA. In conjunction with the staff of the University Learning Center, members of the center’s staff teach UAS 107, “Athletes in Transition,” each year. All freshman and transfer student-athletes must take this course during their studies at UDM. The course deals with how student-athletes can make the transition from high school to college. This important class teaches student-athletes to deal with time and stress management, study skills and the

importance of good nutritional habits.

Coordinator’s post. Since the position was created, UDM’s graduation rate for student-athletes has steadily risen. Assistant Athletic Director For NCAA Compliance Steve Corder, no stranger to collegiate athletics as he played soccer for Detroit from 1994-98, and his staff carefully track each Titan’s academic progress to make sure they are on the right path toward graduation. In addition, studentathletes are helped with their tutorial needs through the use of the student-run Learning Center, where professors and students donate their time as tutors.

The student-athletes’ academic progress is closely monitored and study table is set up to assist the Titans with any and all academic areas, including providing tutors and a writing lab. The center is open daily and also has evening hours to work around a student-athlete’s busy schedule. All freshmen must take part in the study table, as well as other studentathletes who have not yet achieved a 2.75 GPA. The University of Detroit Mercy is committed to the principles of institutional control in operating our athletic department. Titan Hall of Fame UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. The Hall of Fame now has 112 members, following the 10 latest additions made on Homecoming Weekend on Jan. 26, 2010.

The 2002 induction dinner was truly one to remember.

Long and Tyler were part of one of the winningest eras of Titan basketball, having helped their team to an 86-25 record over their four years combined. They helped the Titans to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977, and an NIT appearance one year later.

Long was the only player ever to lead the Titans in scoring for four straight varsity seasons, and he’s still th second-leading point producer in school history. Tyler, meanwhile, is the all-time Detroit leader for blocked shots in a game, a season and a career. He is also second in career field goal percentage and sixth in scoring.

The pair’s old coach, none other than Dick Vitale, was the keynote speaker at his former players’ induction dinner. The present-day ESPN/ABC telecaster kept the audience captivated for more than an hour with his memories of coaching the Titans.

The 1960 football squad became the first team ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse.

That team finished the season 7-2 – the winningest U-D record of the post-World War II era. Two of those victories, over Cincinnati and Xavier, came by shutout. Future pro stars Larry Vargo, Bruce Maher, Steve Stonebreaker and Jerry Gross were all part of the 1960 Titan roster.

The most recent induction class included four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips and, from the women’s team, Cassandra Pack – as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and field (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).

Athletic Director Keri Gaither was appointed as University of Detroit Mercy’s Director of Athletics and Associate Vice President in May of 2007, less than six months after being asked to serve as Interim Athletic Director.

Soon after taking the helm of Titan athletics, Gaither announced the expansion of the Detroit Titans Division I sports program from 16 to 19 teams with the addition of men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis.

In her first two years, Gaither also expanded the athletic staff by adding eight full-time positions to the department, directed the building and completion of a new $1.6 million all-purpose synthetic turf field and track, and was responsible for the hiring of men’s basketball coach Ray McCallum, women’s basketball coach Autumn Rademacher, and softball coach Sunny Jones.

Gaither also completed a successful fundraising campaign for the renovation of the men’s basketball office suite, press conference room as well as the addition of a new film room.

Other projects that have been completed in her tenure is a brand new basketball court dedicated to Dick Vitale, the Titan Tennis Complex and a new grass field to accommodate the lacrosse and soccer teams.

Gaither was recognized for her strong leadership as UDM’s Director of Athletics when she was appointed to the University of Detroit Mercy’s (UDM) senior leadership team as a member of the Associate Vice President’s group in June of 2007.

For the three years preceding her appointment, Gaither served as second in command for the Titan Athletic Department and also supervised nine women’s varsity sports as the Senior Athletic Director. During her tenure in that position, Gaither played an instrumental role in the planning and implementation of women’s golf in 2004 when it became UDM’s 16th varsity team. She has also served in several key administrative roles for Athletics, including stints as Senior Woman Administrator and Director of Business Operations.

Gaither Chaired the Detroit Local Organizing Committee (DLOC) for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four which was played in front of a record-setting crowd of 72,922 at Ford Field in Detroit as UDM served as the host institution. As the DLOC Chair, Gaither provided strong leadership for the DLOC and maintained ultimate responsibility for the local operations of the Final Four event. Gaither held the same position, in addition to being designated Tournament Director, for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional.

As a current member of the Horizon League’s Executive Council, Gaither is actively involved with League operations. She currently serves on the League’s Men’s Basketball Strategic Planning Committee and has served on both the finance and television committees.

In July of 2010, Gaither was appointed a new member of the Executive Committee of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association. She is one of just 13 members serving on the Committee, which works on behalf of the membership of the D1-AAA, in addition to its President and five other officers.

September of 2009. As one of six Division I members on the 15-person committee, Gaither is currently in year two of a four-year term. The MOIC was formed to review issues related to the interests of ethnic minorities and women with a focus on education and welfare of minority student-athletes, as well as the enhancement of opportunities for ethnic minorities and women in coaching, athletics administration, officiating and the NCAA governance structure.

In March of 2008, Gaither was presented with the Phenomenal Women’s Ashley Gray Legacy Award by the University of Detroit Mercy’s Student Programming Board.

This award was presented for her outstanding contribution toward the growth and development of students as the Director of Athletics at UDM. Gaither was also honored in September of 2008 when she was named one of Crain’s Detroit Business’ “2008 Women to Watch” for her goals and initiatives in the Detroit Titans athletics program and her leadership in serving as chair of Detroit’s Local Organizing Committee for the 2009 NCAA Final Four.

While a member of the 2006 UDM Self-Study Steering Committee for NCAA Athletic Certification, Gaither also served on the Equity and Student-Athletic Welfare SubCommittee and was designated the campus liaison during the certification process. Shortly after the University received its full certification in April of 2007, Gaither was asked by the NCAA to serve as a Peer-Review Team Member.

Past University appointments include chairing UDM’s prioritization sub-committee and serving on various search committees. She is a past Board Member for the University of Detroit Mercy’s Women’s Studies Program and served on the Women’s Studies Program Development Sub-committee.

She also participated as a member of the Tourism Action Group (TAG) Hospitality Committee, a group organized by the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitor Bureau dedicated to training the hospitality industry for Detroit-area events such as the 2005 MLB All Star Game and Super Bowl XL. In 2006, the Titan Athletic Director completed the NCAA’s inaugural Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Females, a leadership development program sponsored by the NCAA Office for Diversity and Inclusion and the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. The Leadership Institute, designed to address the critical shortage of senior-level minority administrators at NCAA member institutions and conference offices, prepares diverse leaders through a 12-month leadership training and skills development experience.

Gaither served as a past steering committee member of the Women’s Leadership Symposium for Intercollegiate Athletics and recently assisted in coordinating its national leadership conference. Gaither is also a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA), and the Black Coaches Association (BCA).

Graduating magna cum laude from UDM, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. During her undergraduate studies, she was a two-time recipient of the College of Liberal of Arts’ Economics Student of the Year Award.

Gaither and her husband, Brad Trombley, reside in Pleasant Ridge with their two children, Elliott, a senior at the University of Detroit Mercy majoring in Engineering, and daughter Kennedy.

Points Of Pride BYRNE WINS BIG BREAK Former Titan David Byrne made Detroit proud as he won the Golf Channel’s reality television show Big Break Indian Wells in July of 2011.

The victory gave Byrne a number of prizes, with the best of all a chance to play on the PGA Tour giving him an automatic exemption to the 2012 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Along with the opportunity to play in the 2012 Zurich Classic, he took home over $70,000 in cash, a paid trip for two back to the Indian Wells Golf Resort, an Adams golf endorsement deal and a $10,000 shopping spree to Dicks Sporting Goods.

Byrne outperformed 10 other contestants on the 10-episode series that was shot at Indian Wells Golf Resort in Indian Wells, Calif. When he competes at the Zurich Classic, he will be the first Titan in school history to play on the PGA Tour.

RAY MCCALLUM TO REPRESENT USA BASKETBALL Sophomore Ray McCallum continued to find himself in the national spotlight. Over the summer, he participated as a counselor in the LeBron James Skills Academy and was one of 10 collegiate point guards invited to the Deron Williams Skills Academy. Then in August, he received an invitation to attend USA

Former Titan David Byrne won an automatic exemption to the PGA’s 2012 Zurich Classic of New Orleans Basketball’s World University Games training camp, where he eventually made the final 12-man roster.

The squad practiced and trained in Colorado Springs, Colo., before embarking to China on Aug. 8 to begin competition. Despite being the youngest athlete on the US squad, and a late addition to the original invitees to the training camp, he impressed coaches enough to make the team and represent the US as the red, white and blue looked for its 14th all-time medal in the competition.

McCallum teamed with players from national powerhouses like Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan State, Notre

Dame and Syracuse. The team was coached by Matt Painter of Purdue, while Cuonzo Martin of Tennessee and Butler’s Brad Stevens served as assistants.

APR REPORT HAS TITANS RATED HIGH The NCAA honored more than 900 Division I sports teams for their high marks academically last spring, including a pair of University of Detroit Mercy teams that achieved perfect scores. The Titan men’s golfers and men’s fencing teams each earned perfect 1000’s in the latest edition of the NCAA’s Public Recognition Awards, released in May. The NCAA announcement showed that 909 teams have earned the awards, based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates.

These awards are given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their APRs. Through its innovative APR, which provides an annual scorecard of academic achievement, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of studentathletes on every Division I sports team.

Nine UDM teams were above the national averages among their peers within their sport. The new report was based on data supplied for the 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 200910 academic years.

Each year the NCAA honors select Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multi-year APR. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multi-year APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

DETROIT TITAN ATHLETICS TO NAME COURT IN HONOR OF DICK VITALE Dick Vitale, ESPN broadcaster, college basketball ambassador and former Titan head coach and athletic director, received a tremendous honor from Detroit as the Titans announced that they will rename its basketball court in Calihan Hall after the legendary college basketball figure.

The Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall will be dedicated in conjunction with a nationally-televised men’s basketball game against Big EAST foe St. John’s on December 5, 2011 on ESPN2.

Vitale will be celebrating his 32nd anniversary of calling games for ESPN at the event having started on the sports television outlet on Dec. 5, 1979.

Vitale coached at the University of Detroit (1973-77), compiling a winning percentage of .722 (78-30), which included a 21-game winning streak during the 1976-77 season when the team participated in the NCAA Tournament. Included in the streak was a victory in Milwaukee over Al McGuire’s eventual national champion Marquette team. In April 1977, Vitale was named Athletic Director at Detroit and later that year was named the United Fund’s Detroit

Man of the Year.

The Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall project will feature a brand new, state-of-the-art hardwood floor for the home of the Detroit Titans men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Fundraising for the project will include several other key improvements to the facility, including men’s basketball “Phase II” renovations, which began with new offices and upgraded locker room accommodations.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT A PRIORITY FOR DETROIT The University of Detroit Mercy Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) did a great job as always in trying to help out the local community. Throughout the school year, SAAC got together for a number of community initiatives, including the highly successful Sandwich Bus. The event gives Titan student-athletes a chance to come together in preparing a lunch and distributing it to the local community.

SAAC also helped raise money for the Michigan Special Olympics with a Pie In The Face Fundraiser during a men’s lacrosse game as well as hosting a coat drive during a men’s basketball game for Nardly Human Services, Inc. Other student-athletes were involved outside of the field and classroom too as men’s lacrosse players Brandon Davenport, Matt Lining and Adam Parrottino participated in a Habitat for Humanity project near Grosse Pointe, while men’s basketball standouts Eli Holman and Ray McCallum greeted attendees and showed support of the United Way and downtown Detroit at the annual Blocktoberfest. UDM also partnered with the Southeastern Michigan “Toys for Tots” during Thanksgiving Weekend where the Titans played host to the Legend’s Classic.

STUDENT-ATHLETES RECEIVE ACADEMIC ACCOLADES.

It started with 210 Titans being named to the Athletic Director’s honor roll. The Titans then saw 58 members named to the Horizon League’s fall academic honor roll, while 54 appeared on the HL’s spring honor roll. In addition, 10 men’s lacrosse players were placed on the MAAC’s honor roll.

As a team, both the Titan men’s and women’s track and field and cross country teams earned All-Academic Team honors from the USTFCCCA, while the UDM men’s and women’s tennis squads were tabbed ITA AllAcademic Teams. The men’s golf program was also recognized as an All-Academic Team by the GCAA. Eight Titans (Taylor Hennrick, Vushaun Landrum, Susan Kalkstein, Katrina Oberski, Jeff Clarridge, Britt Pronk, Alainna Stefan, Erin Weldon) were selected to the Horizon League’s Spring All-Academic Team.

Three Detroit student-athletes (Patrick Liederbach, Kirstin Mooney and Landrum) were tabbed All-HL Academic for the winter, while Lauren Roffey was named to the League’s AllAcademic team in the fall.

In lacrosse, four members of the women’s program earned their way onto the National Lacrosse Conference’s Academic All-League Team in Britany Busch, Anna Eidem, Corina Mahorn and Alycsa Valentine.

In men’s lacrosse, 10 players were tabbed Academic All-MAAC in Brandon Davenport, John Dwyer, Brad Janer, Ty Maruyama, Jason McDonald, Chris Nemes, John Nowicki, Adam Parrottino, Nick Schesnuk and Wes Steen.

Also individually, Jeff Clarridge of the men’s golf team was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar, while Marni Achterhoff, Alainna Stefan and Lindsey Lammers were honored as the National Golf Coaches Association’s Women’s AllAmerican Scholar Team.

Another year went by with a number of academic honor rolls and awards that University of Detroit Mercy student-athletes received. For the 2010-11 season, 138 student-athletes had cumulative GPA’s over a 3.0, while 16 of the Titans’ 19 varsity teams were also over a 3.0 GPA.
