JANUARY 9 MARCH 26
UCLA EXTENSION WINTER QUARTER 2023
We must always change, renew, rejuvenate ourselves; otherwise we harden.”
— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

REFLECT AND RENEW

A new year can bring hope and optimism, but it can also be stressful. With so much trauma we have collectively endured as a result of recent and ongoing world events, life can feel overwhelming and uncertain. Many of us are concerned about the health of our world and environment, the looming economic crisis, and daily news reports of horrific events. I start with this not to be negative, but to call out and acknowledge that a new year is not the cure-all for solving these issues. What the new year does offer is an opportunity to reflect and reset. Many of us set new year’s resolutions, start off strong with those goals, only to find that eventually we may abandon them altogether. Resolutions are fine, but goals that are in alignment with one’s life purpose are critical.

In previous messages, I have explored the intersectionality of purpose, community, and curiosity. I believe that by working together, we are stronger and better equipped to tackle the greatest issues facing society. With that in mind, I would urge you to reflect and consider how your individual goals might come into alignment with your friends, family, and community. Having cheerleaders within your network or joining forces with others who have similar goals is a great way to ensure that you will achieve your resolutions. UCLA Extension is also your partner in the pursuit of your goals! We are an accelerator of careers, an incubator for innovation, a partner in problem-solving, and a convener of community.

UCLA Extension is a community of learners, always engaged and curious about yesterday, today, and the future. We are committed to providing access to lifelong learning pursuits and to continuously improve upon the knowledge that gives us power to understand ourselves and our world. Together, we can tackle the new year and move boldly to shape our collective future.

In the new year, may you have positive and meaningful experiences in learning and in life.

Best Wishes, Eric A. Bullard, PhD Dean, Continuing Education and UCLA Extension

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

Building Equity For All

At UCLA Extension, one of our key strategic priorities is to provide access, equity, and inclusion in all of our offerings. Our academic programs empower people to build better futures for themselves and their communities. This is a mission we do not take lightly, knowing that the impact will positively transform the demographic makeup of the fields and industries in which our students work.

For this reason, we established the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Committee, a body that consists of representatives from UCLA Extension students, instructors, and staff. The committee’s charge is to foster and guide the development of a more inclusive and equity-based culture at UCLA Extension that continues to support and strengthen diverse backgrounds, identities, and points of view.

joaomachado.com/ Born in Coimbra, João Machado has a degree in sculpture with the Porto School of Fine Arts, but it is in graphic design that he is unique and internationally recognized.

He was a teacher at ESBAP (1976-1981), but soon decided to dedicate himself exclusively to graphic design and to open his own studio in 1981.

Since 1983, he has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions that have brought him several national and international awards, including the Icograda Excellence Award, the title of ‘Design Master’ of the renowned American magazine Graphis, and his appointment as a member of AGI-Alliance Graphique Internationale.

His posters are characterized by bright colors, a playful arrangement of well-defined geometric elements and bold contrasts between flat surfaces and texture patterns.

He also reveals himself in editorial design, in the areas of illustration and philately, always marked by an identity that has been persistently built.

2022 UCLAxFilmFest

The Entertainment Studies program created the UCLAxFilmFest seven years ago to give a voice and a platform to our talented students and alumni. With many of our students going on to achieve successful professional careers in the entertainment industry, the Film Festival provides a venue to showcase and share their finest work.

This year, the screenings and industry panels were held virtually; however on September 10th, 2022, our film community came together in person for a party to celebrate the achievements of our filmmakers. Thanks to the generosity of our founding sponsor, FOX Entertainment, the party was held on the FOX Studios Lot, and filmmakers from UCLAxFilmFest 2022, 2021, and 2020 were honored. Over 300 people attended and a wonderful time was had by all. Opening remarks were made by Pascale Cohen-Ovilar, Director of the Arts Department, who introduced Associate Dean Leah Vriesman to address the crowd. After which, Scott Edwards, Exec VP Creative Advertising for FOX Entertainment, made a short speech and was presented with an award for his continued dedication to the FilmFest from UCLA Extension.
